Social farming is a much-studied concept in the European Union, but debates continue on the issues of standardised content and terminology. Therefore, this study involved an empirical analysis of various social farming concepts, outlining a way in which relevant rules can be designed at the European level. Various models of social farming were empirically analysed, with a focus on the (a) aim of the organisation, (b) actors within and outside the organisation, and (c) communication and decision-making structures. This study demonstrates that a European-level legal act should be adopted to achieve standardisation; however, full harmonisation is not desirable, at least not at present. It will be necessary to oblige Member States to catalogue specific activities to be covered by the term social farming in a given legal system. The pivotal point here is the multifunctional idea of agriculture, which ultimately means that social agriculture will have to support traditional agricultural activities, an approach that could be used to promote social farming systematically. The main feature of this proposal is the implementation of an open, subsidiary approach to do justice to the versatility of social farming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Common Agricultural Policy has undergone continuous evolution over the years, moving from a narrow, production-oriented approach to an agriculture with holistic approach, in which agricultural activity is intended to be treated having harmonious and sustainable utilization and rational management of natural resources and components of nature. The goal of protecting biodiversity within the Common Agricultural Policy becomes increasingly visible with each successive financing period; yet its fulfilment encounters numerous difficulties, primarily due to the resistance of Member States to introducing far-reaching changes, as well as due to the resistance of agricultural environments considering the indicated changes as striking their interests. The aim of this article is to evaluate the legal solutions adopted within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy, both in its initial period of validity and the period commencing from year 2000, when the focus on environmental issues became significantly more prominent. This article also evaluates the currently applicable financial perspective in the context of its potential for protecting biodiversity in agricultural activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Today, there are a dozen labelling schemes pertaining to farm animal welfare in at least seven Member States. Despite the proliferation of animal welfare labels, European Union rules on food information to consumers concerning the treatment of farmed animals used in animal-source food production remain fragmented and incomplete. On the one hand, the rules contained in agricultural regulations primarily aim to harmonise marketing standards, but only for some products. On the other hand, consumer protection rules aim to protect consumers from misleading commercial claims but not misleading claims about animal treatment specifically. After examining the situation that has led to the proliferation of animal welfare food labels in the European Union, this article analyses the animal welfare food labelling landscape and presents different regulatory pathways to best harmonise consumer information on farm animal welfare. After the end of the COVID 19 outbreak, the authors summarise the measures taken by the European Union to ensure the continuity of food supply and the functioning of the food chain during the outbreak. In addition to the EU measures, the specific measures followed by the Member States and their room for manoeuvre are presented using the Hungarian example. __________ Tras el fin del brote de COVID 19, los autores resumen las medidas adoptadas por la Unión Europea para garantizar la continuidad del suministro de alimentos y el funcionamiento de la cadena alimentaria durante el brote. Además de las medidas de la UE, se presentan las medidas específicas seguidas por los Estados miembros y su margen de maniobra utilizando el ejemplo húngaro. En este artículo también hemos intentado elaborar las implicaciones para la Política Agrícola Europea y, en consecuencia, para la Agricultura Europea. La literatura que hemos elaborado también cubre los procesos del mercado agrícola y las implicaciones para las áreas rurales. Sin embargo, este artículo se centra en las implicaciones de la legislación en el derecho público húngaro y en las cuestiones prácticas de su aplicación de la sentencia húngara. Nuestro artículo también analiza el vínculo entre la sequía extrema del año 2022 y la pandemia. In the agricultural sector, a barn fire is a devastating disaster that can destroy lives and livelihoods in minutes. They can be traumatic for farmers, farmworkers, first responders and their communities, and they are particularly tragic when farm animals are killed. Common causes of barn fires are electrical malfunctions or improperly placed or faulty heating devices as well as the presence of combustible materials. Many farm buildings also lack adequate fire detection systems and suppression methods. Although National Model Codes and provincial legislation establish minimal fire safety and prevention requirements, they are unevenly applied to animal housing facilities. While animal rights advocates have rightly been calling on all levels of government to introduce laws and regulations to prevent barn fires and their associated costs, the private sector also has a role to play. This paper provides an overview of the prevalence of barn fires in Canada, their causes and their consequences. After establishing that current regulations overseeing disaster management and emergency preparedness in the agricultural sector are inadequate, this paper suggests that a mix of public law and private governance schemes can mitigate these risks in manner that treats farm animals with greater concern and respect. In modern conditions, historical and legal knowledge retains its relevance and topicality. This also applies to the monograph by A.D. Dyusyupova, devoted to the legal regulation of agrarian relations in the Russian Empire. The study is carried out on a large amount of factual material. The experience studied by the author is connected both with domestic legal traditions and modern searches for optimal ways of socio-economic development. In the context of modern global transformations, it is also extremely important to study different models for the development of adjacent and annexed territories, their inclusion into the united legal space and economic life. Therefore, the issues raised in the work of A.D. Dyusyupova undoubtedly contribute to the development of modern historical and legal science.

Manure-sourced methane emissions from livestock operations in California will soon be subject to new regulation, as required by Senate Bill 1383, which was signed into law in 2016. Regulations, beginning in 2024, will require reductions in methane emissions from livestock manure, with a 40% reduction target by 2030. The California dairy industry accounts for most of the manure-sourced methane emissions in the state and, in order to reduce these emissions, government experts and authorities have encouraged expansion of anaerobic digestion of dairy waste — especially to produce transportation fuel. Renewable natural gas for vehicle fuel, produced from manure at digesters, is eligible for substantial federal and California environmental credits, which are now projected to contribute the bulk of the revenue for qualifying digesters. This article shows that investments in digesters, because they depend heavily on revenue created by government policy, rather than on market-based sales of natural gas, are highly vulnerable to the risk of policy change or even minor technical adjustments in environmental regulations. Without secure projections of revenue that will cover costs, regulations may cause increases in the shift of milk production out of California.

Mandatory meat inspection requirements have long been a source of frustration for advocates of ethical meat. Seen as overly restrictive and ill-adapted to the realities on the ground, some argue that farm-to-consumer sales should be subject to less stringent inspection requirements than conventional meat supply chains. Recently, a series of legislative reforms authorizing on-farm slaughter suggests that policy makers are listening. But do on-farm slaughter exemptions really facilitate ethical meat sales? To answer this question, this paper explores meat inspection systems in Quebec, Ontario, and Vermont. Drawing on data obtained from semi-structured interviews with producers, processors, and policy advisors, it argues that inspection requirements may not be the barriers they are presumed to be. Instead, producers and processors face other more significant financial and structural challenges. These need to be addressed if ethical meat is to be a viable alternative to the dominant model of animal agriculture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
