The development of technology and information in the Industry 4.0 era, especially the internet, is experiencing very rapid progress. Searching for information through new media will increase human resource capacity and work efficiency. Using technology acceptance model (TAM) theory, this study aims to identify social media usage as a communication and information medium and analyze the influence between constructs in social media acceptance. A cross-sectional survey was used in this study design. A structured questionnaire from previous related studies was used as the instrument. One hundred and eleven sheep farmers from several villages in Sukabumi, West Java groups, participated in this survey. Stratified sampling was adopted to select and interview the respondents. The findings show that social media usage as a channel for communication and livestock information is quite adequate. Many farmers already use WhatsApp and YouTube. However, only a few farmers use Facebook and Instagram. The results of the TAM analysis (limited to only the WhatsApp application) indicate that perceived ease of use positively influences perceived usefulness (PU). A positive relationship is also shown between PU and behavioral intention to use. The theoretical implication is that this study proves how social media adopts in disseminating messages and seeking information. Regarding managerial implications, the findings suggest that stakeholders in the agricultural industry across the value chain could enhance their services by fostering a broader ecosystem of social media applications.

Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth infestation is one of the major constraints to maize production in the Nigeria savannas. The application of nitrogen fertilizer to Striga-resistant hybrids may reduce Striga infection and increase grain yields. The objective of this study was to assess the performance of six maize hybrids at low (30 kg ha−1) and high (120 kg ha−1) nitrogen application under natural infestation with Striga in northern Nigeria in 2014 and 2015. The two nitrogen rates and the six hybrids were arranged in a split-plot design with three replications. The nitrogen treatment was assigned to the main plot while the maize hybrids were assigned to the subplot. Data were collected on number of emerged Striga plants, Striga damage score, total dry matter and grain yield. Results showed that the application of nitrogen at 120 kg ha−1 reduced the number of Striga plants by 58% compared to application at 30 kg N ha−1 in Kafin Madaki and by 48% in Tudun Wada. Nitrogen application at 120 kg N ha−1 also reduced Striga damage rating by 22% in Kafin Madaki and by 33% in Tudun Wada. Both the commercial hybrid (OBASUPER 1) and the susceptible hybrid (8338-1) exhibited higher Striga damage ratings compared to the new hybrids at both locations. Grain yield was 86 and 98% higher in Kafin Madaki and Tudun Wada, respectively, when N was applied at 120 kg N ha−1 than at 30 kg N ha−1. The hybrids M1124-3 and M1227-14 produced grain yields that were significantly higher than those of the other hybrids in all locations. Our results showed that the application of 120 kg N ha−1 to Striga-resistant maize hybrids will reduce Striga infection and increase grain yield.

Abstract Agriculture holds a crucial position in maintaining livelihoods and securing food sources, particularly in nations such as Ethiopia, where a substantial portion of the population depends on agricultural pursuits. However, meeting the growing demand for food production amidst population growth presents considerable challenges. Recent advancements in technology, particularly in the areas of Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and the Internet of Things (IoT) offer promising solutions to address these challenges. This paper explores the potential of integrating ML, DL, and IoT technologies in agriculture to revolutionize the sector. By harnessing data-driven insights, farmers can make informed decisions regarding crop management, soil health, and weather patterns, leading to optimized resource allocation and increased productivity. Moreover, IoT devices enable the real-time monitoring and control of agricultural operations, enhancing sustainability and productivity. Despite the opportunities presented by these technologies, there are also challenges to overcome, such as data quality, connectivity issues, and the need for farmer education. However, with concerted efforts and investment, Ethiopia and other agricultural regions can unlock the full potential of ML, DL, and IoT technologies to ensure food security, alleviate poverty, and drive economic development. This review paper offers perspectives on the present status, challenges, and future possibilities regarding the integration of ML, DL, and IoT in agriculture. It underscores the transformative potential of these technologies within the sector.

Abstract Multipurpose trees, like the moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.), have become extremely popular in an attempt to reduce food, nutritional, and economic instability. The significant benefits of moringa’s leaves, pods, seeds, roots, and flowers are used in a wide range of commercial fields, including medicine, cosmetics, food, animal feed, water purification, and more. We applied a questionnaire-based survey to reveal the uses, problems and solutions related to the knowledge, uses and constraints of moringa in the region of Chapainawabganj and Kushtia districts in Bangladesh. Including the easiest propagation process and the lowest cultivation costs, year-round flowering, and production provide moringa with a wide window of opportunity. Besides using regular pruning of moringa branches, respondents make trees bushy to increase fruit and leaf production. Respondents from both regions opined that moringa has a good market value, increases family income, increases opportunity for fallow land utilization, enhances employment opportunities, and is known as a nutritive and multipurpose tree. We were pleased to find that moringa output regularly exceeded previous production records in Bangladesh from 2014–16 to 2020–21. Furthermore, our survey shows that a 5-year-old moringa tree provides a satisfactory yield per season with its high market price and demand. Despite the extensive use of moringa fruits and leaves by respondents, its commercial potential remains largely undeveloped and unknown to them. Constraints like limited scientific knowledge and technological infrastructure are the reasons why the elusive potential of moringa in Bangladesh persists. There is ample opportunity to enhance moringa production via effective management techniques, which will satisfy community demand and create market opportunities both locally and internationally. As a result, smallholder farmers’ livelihoods and food and nutritional security can be improved.

Abstract Genetic architecture of yield and yield contributing characters of five crosses in chickpea were performed by generation mean analysis. Non-significant χ2 values were noted for plant weight at harvest (PWH), number of pods per plant (NPd/P) and number of seeds per plant (NS/P) in cross-2; for number of secondary branches at first flower (NSBFF) and number of secondary branches at maximum flower (NSBMF) in cross-3 and for number of primary branches at maximum flower (NPBMF) in cross-4. Among these, PWH in cross-2; NSBFF and NSBMF in cross-3 and NPBMF in cross-4 were also non-significant regarding C and D scales. Non-significant scale coupled with non-significant χ2 values indicated only additive-dominance relationship for those characters and crosses that would likely be helpful in doing successful breeding plan easily for the development of potential lines in chickpea. Gene effects viz., additive [d], dominance [h], additive × additive [i] and dominance × dominance [l] were significant for different crosses and characters indicating involvement of additive, dominance, additive × additive and dominance × dominance gene interactions in the control of these traits. Most of the studied characters exhibited duplicate type of epistasis therefore, recurrent selection for these traits is suggested. Effective factor (K1) was less than one for all the characters and crosses indicating minimum one group of gene controlled the characters. Both broad (h2 b) and narrow (h2 n) sense heritability in majority cases were found to be high which indicates that selection for high heritability showing traits is likely to be effective. Mid-parent (MP) and better-parent (BP) heterosis found to be non-significant in maximum cases. All the characters and crosses showed non-significant inbreeding depression (ID) indicating a good sign for further genetic work.

Abstract Animal manures are increasingly receiving renewed interest as an alternative to synthetic fertilizers. While they may improve ecosystem functions, there is limited information on short-term effects of organic amendments on soil reaction and nutrient dynamics in irrigated mixed dairy pastures, especially in the context of the Tsitsikamma region, South Africa. This study examined the soil fertility status of minimum tilled 6-year-old pasture-mixed dairy farms (F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5) in the Upper (UT) and Lower (LT) Tsitsikamma regions treated with different rates of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) fertilizer alone or in combination with poultry manure (PM) and/or dairy effluent (DE). Soil samples were collected at 0–15, 15–30, 30–45 and 45–60 cm depth intervals and analysed for soil pH, P, K, Ca and Mg. Results of this study revealed variable trends on soil pH and nutrient changes between farms, suggesting an influence of some inherent soil properties in addition to the 6-year applied management practices. When averaged over sampled farms, surface placement of soil amendments and limited soil disturbance resulted in surface stratification of soil pH, P, K, Ca and Mg. On the other hand, integration of organic and inorganic fertilizers induced significant changes in nutrient contents and stocks to a depth of 60 cm, especially in the LT region. A combination of NPK fertilizer, PM and/or DE applied in pasture mixtures generally showed potential to improve soil fertility in both regions. As such, adoption of this combination by farmers could cut down reliance on expensive synthetic fertilizers and costs of dairy production. However, studies are still necessary in this region to validate the observed results.

Abstract The poor quality of available feed resources is the major limiting factor for livestock production in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the chemical composition of major feed resources in three agro-ecological zones (AEZs) of the Gera District, southwest Ethiopia. Three representative samples of natural pasture (Cynodon dactylon, Pavonia schimperiana Hochst and Rhynchosia ferruginea), three indigenous fodder trees and shrubs (IFTSs) (Erythrina abyssinica, Vernonia amygdalina and Maytenus undat), two cultivated forages (Pennisetum purpureum and Pennisetum pedicellatum) and five crop residues (Hordeum vulgare (barley), Zea mays (maize), Sorghum bicolor (sorghum), Triticum aestivum (wheat) and Eragrostis tef (Teff)) were randomly and separately collected from the Highland (HL), midland (ML) and lowland (LL) AEZs. The samples were analyzed for ash, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), ether extract (EE), and acid detergent lignin (ADL) content using standard analytical methods. Abstract Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a vital crop with enormous economic and nutritional importance in Nepal and worldwide. The yellow stem borer (YSB), Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is a monophagous severe pest that poses a substantial threat to rice crops, causing significant yield losses by its larva feeding on stems and tillers. This review covers the life cycle, distribution, damage, and management and control strategies of YSB. YSB primarily targets rice plants, causing symptoms like dead hearts and whiteheads. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are crucial for effective YSB control. Cultural practices include selecting resistant rice varieties, using Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) incorporated transgenic rice plants, synchronizing planting to reduce generations, and promoting natural enemies by conserving their habitats. Mechanical methods involve pheromone and light traps to disrupt mating and reduce adult populations. Biological control methods utilize natural predators like beetles and spiders and parasitoids such as Cotesia flavipes and Trichogramma spp. In contrast, chemical control involves targeted insecticide application when pest populations reach economic threshold levels that is when 5–10% dead hearts are seen. The article emphasizes the importance of IPM techniques in reducing YSB infestation and fostering sustainable rice production. These approaches not only help to lower the YSB population but also contribute to environmental preservation and long-term agricultural viability. As rice is a staple food for millions, effective management of YSB becomes crucial for guaranteeing food security and livelihoods across the globe.

Abstract Biopores formed by the actions of decaying roots of plants and soil fauna are essential for providing preferential growth pathways into deeper soil when the subsoil is compacted. Biopores help with rapid transportation of oxygen which increases microbial activity. These positive impacts help to increase the yield of crops even in adverse environmental conditions. However, the impact of biopores depends on various climatic and soil conditions. Understanding the mechanisms of different factors controlling the influences of biopores on the growth and development of plant roots is essential for getting more benefits in crop production. While several reviews have explored biopore-root interactions in crop production, there remains a lack of systematic studies on the factors influencing these interactions. In this review, we discussed different factors affecting the impacts of biopores on various crops in different situations based on current literature. It is also explained how we can maximize these impacts for getting benefits in sustainable crop production. Biopore improves the soil structure which has vital role on the growth of crops. On the other hand, clumping of roots within the biopores was also observed which may negatively affect crop growth. Similarly, biopores increase water infiltration as well as the leaching of nutrients. The influences of biopores depend on pore characteristics, abundance of biopores, moisture content, management practices, edaphic conditions, plant species etc. Understanding the factors influencing biopore-root interaction can contribute to improve root accessing into the deeper soil, enhancing their adaptation in stressful soil conditions.

Abstract Selective breeding in livestock has contributed to a remarkable increase in farm productivity and a reduction in carbon footprint in recent decades. This study evaluated selective breeding for more sustainable dairy cows based on both carbon (carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO2-eq) per cow) and economic (pounds sterling (£) per cow) index values derived for 1042 female dairy cows in the UK that had completed their lifespan. Economic and carbon coefficients were attributed to the genetic background of each animal for a range of commonly directly measured production (milk volume, milk fat yield, milk protein yield) and fitness traits (somatic cell count, fertility and lifespan). A high negative rank correlation was found between the economic and carbon index values among cows (rho = −0.72). Benchmarking cows on a carbon index per cow, along with an economic index, can help to reduce the carbon footprint of milk production.

By maintaining stress factors under optimal low-dose levels, plant performance and productivity can be increased and postharvest produce quality can be improved. Hence, for a sustainable food production, plant stress should not be feared but systematically monitored and embraced. Numerous chemicals as well as stressors have both favorable and unfavorable consequences for plant performance and health in a dose-dependent manner, and here we discuss implications of these phenomena for the practice of sustainable agriculture.

Abstract The sebum on human skin is generated for various causes. The composition of the formed sebum increases the proliferation of Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) residing on the skin. As C. acnes proliferates, it produces skin irritants that stimulate the sebaceous glands, increasing sebum production. Skin troubles such as acne may occur. The lysate concentrates of Bacillus stratosphericus (B. stratosphericus), first discovered in the stratosphere, confirmed a 66.35% inhibition of Nitric Oxide (NO) production at 0.50 mg/ml concentration in vitro. Additionally, the growth inhibition efficacy of B. stratosphericus lysate concentrate (BSLC) against C. acnes was confirmed, showing a 95.1% inhibition of growth proliferation at a consistency of 0.50 mg/ml. Based on the in vitro results, the efficacy of BSLC in degrading and reducing sebum was confirmed by reacting it with artificial sebum to various concentrations. The results showed a concentration-dependent decrease in artificial sebum ccording to the efficacy results confirmed in vitro, a clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the daily sebum reduction efficacy of a serum formulation containing 50 mg/ml of BSLC. After a 4-week application, the test group containing BSLC determined a significant 28.68% reduction in sebum levels, demonstrating the practical implications of the research. In conclusion, BSLC is considered to have sufficient industrial value as a valuable ingredient for the cosmetics industry aimed at sebum improvement.

Abstract Trichlorobenzenes (TCBs), comprising the isomers 1,2,3-, 1,2,4-, and 1,3,5-TCB, disrupt metabolic processes by inducing liver enzymes involved in xenobiotic metabolism, suggesting a broad toxicological impact. Specifically, exposure to TCBs is associated with significant organ-specific toxicities, such as increased liver and kidney weights in rodents and cytotoxic effects in mammalian cells, which include DNA damage without metabolic activation. Used extensively in industrial and agricultural sectors, TCBs are prevalent pollutants in various ecosystems, including air, food, surface water, groundwater, sediment, soil, and sewage. This is a concern because of their tendency to accumulate in lipid-containing tissues of animals and humans and potentially serious risks to human health and ecosystems. Information showing the presence of TCBs in food, drinking water, and even human breast milk underscores the need for ongoing assessment of the extent of these contaminants in food to measure the potential exposure to these chemicals. TCBs are extracted from various food sample matrices, and then instrumental analysis is performed, typically gas chromatography (GC) coupled with a variety of detectors. This review discusses the occurrence and risk assessment of TCBs in foods, as well as the toxicology and analytical methods related to TCBs.

Leaves are the main organ for photosynthesis and organic synthesis in cotton. Leaf shape has important effects on photosynthetic efficiency and canopy formation, thereby affecting cotton yield. Previous studies have shown that LMI1 (LATE MERISTEM IDENTITY1) is the main gene regulating leaf shape. In this study, the LMI1 gene was inserted into the 35S promoter expression vector, and cotton plants overexpressing LMI1 (OE) were obtained through genetic transformation. Statistical analysis of the biological traits of the T1 and T2 populations showed that compared to the wild type (WT), OE plants had significantly larger leaves, thicker stems and significantly greater dry weight. Furthermore, plant sections of the main vein and petiole showed that the numbers of cells in those tissues of OE plants were significantly greater. In addition, RNA-seq analysis revealed the differential expression of genes related to gibberellin synthesis and NAC gene family (genes containing the NAC domain) between the OE and WT plants, suggesting that LMI1 is involved in secondary wall formation and cell proliferation, which promotes stem thickening. Moreover, Gene Ontology (GO) analysis revealed enrichment in the terms of calcium ion binding, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed enrichment in the terms of fatty acid degradation, phosphatidylinositol signal transduction system, and cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) signal pathway. These results suggested that LMI1 OE plants are responsive to gibberellin hormone signals, and have altered messenger signals (cAMP, Ca2+) which amplify this function, to promote stronger aboveground vegetative growth. This study found the LMI1 greatly increased the vegetative growth in cotton, which is the basic requirement for higher yield.

Cotton fiber quality is a persistent concern that determines planting benefits and the quality of finished textile products. However, the limitations of measurement instruments have hindered the accurate evaluation of some important fiber characteristics such as fiber maturity, fineness, and neps, which in turn has impeded the genetic improvement and industrial utilization of cotton fiber. Here, 12 single fiber quality traits were measured using Advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS) equipment among 383 accessions of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). In addition, eight conventional fiber quality traits were assessed by the High Volume Instrument (HVI) System. Genome-wide association study (GWAS), linkage disequilibrium (LD) block genotyping and functional identification were conducted sequentially to uncover the associated elite loci and candidate genes of fiber quality traits. As a result, the previously reported pleiotropic locus FL_D11 regulating fiber length-related traits was identified in this study. More importantly, three novel pleiotropic loci (FM_A03, FF_A05, and FN_A07) regulating fiber maturity, fineness and neps, respectively, were detected based on AFIS traits. Numerous highly promising candidate genes were screened out by integrating RNA-seq and qRT-PCR analyses, including the reported GhKRP6 for fiber length, the newly identified GhMAP8 for maturity and GhDFR for fineness. The origin and evolutionary analysis of pleiotropic loci indicated that the selection pressure on FL_D11, FM_A03 and FF_A05 increased as the breeding period approached the present and the origins of FM_A03 and FF_A05 were traced back to cotton landraces. These findings reveal the genetic basis underlying fiber quality and provide insight into the genetic improvement and textile utilization of fiber in G. hirsutum.

Verticillium wilt (VW), induced by the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae (Vd), poses a substantial threat to a diverse array of plant species. Employing molecular breeding technology for the development of cotton varieties with heightened resistance to VW stands out as one of the most efficacious protective measures. In this study, we successfully generated two stable transgenic lines of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), VdThit-RNAi-1 and VdThit-RNAi-2, using host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) technology to introduce double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) targeting the thiamine transporter protein gene (VdThit). Southern blot analysis confirmed the presence of a single-copy insertion in each line. Microscopic examination showed marked reductions in the colonization and spread of Vd-mCherry in the roots of VdThit-RNAi cotton compared to wild type (WT). The corresponding disease index and fungal biomass of VdThit-RNAi-1/2 also exhibited significant reductions. Real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis demonstrated a substantial inhibition of VdThit expression following prolonged inoculation of VdThit-RNAi cotton. Small RNA sequencing (sRNA-Seq) analysis revealed the generation of a substantial number of VdThit-specific siRNAs in the VdThit-RNAi transgenic lines. Additionally, the silencing of VdThit by the siVdThit produced by VdThit-RNAi-1/2 resulted in the elevated expression of multiple genes involved in the thiamine biosynthesis pathway in Vd. Under field conditions, VdThit-RNAi transgenic cotton exhibited significantly enhanced disease resistance and yield compared with WT. In summary, our findings underscore the efficacy of HIGS targeting VdThit in restraining the infection and spread of Vd in cotton, thereby potentially enabling the development of cotton breeding as a promising strategy for managing VW.

Banana is a significant crop, and three banana leaf diseases, including Sigatoka, Cordana and Pestalotiopsis, have the potential to have a serious impact on banana production. Existing studies are insufficient to provide a reliable method for accurately identifying banana leaf diseases. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method to identify banana leaf diseases. First, a new algorithm called K-scale VisuShrink algorithm (KVA) is proposed to denoise banana leaf images. The proposed algorithm introduces a new decomposition scale K based on the semi-soft and middle course thresholds, the ideal threshold solution is obtained and substituted with the newly established threshold function to obtain a less noisy banana leaf image. Then, this paper proposes a novel network for image identification called Ghost ResNeSt-Attention RReLU-Swish Net (GR-ARNet) based on Resnet50. In this, the Ghost Module is implemented to improve the network's effectiveness in extracting deep feature information on banana leaf diseases and the identification speed; the ResNeSt Module adjusts the weight of each channel, increasing the ability of banana disease feature extraction and effectively reducing the error rate of similar disease identification; the model's computational speed is increased using the hybrid activation function of RReLU and Swish. Our model achieves an average accuracy of 96.98% and a precision of 89.31% applied to 13,021 images, demonstrating that the proposed method can effectively identify banana leaf diseases.

EPSPS is a key gene in the shikimic acid synthesis pathway that has been widely used in breeding crops with herbicide resistance. However, its role in regulating cell elongation is poorly understood. Through the overexpression of EPSPS genes, we generated lines resistant to glyphosate that exhibit an unexpected dwarf phenotype. A representative line, DHR1, exhibits a stable dwarf phenotype throughout its entire growth period. Except for plant height, the other agronomic traits of DHR1 are similar to its transgenic explants ZM24. Paraffin section observations showed that DHR1 internodes are shortened due to reduced elongation and division of the internode cells. Exogenous hormones confirmed that DHR1 is not a classical brassinolide (BR)- or gibberellin (GA)-related dwarfing mutant. Hybridization analysis and fine mapping confirmed that the EPSPS gene is the causal gene for dwarfism, and the phenotype can be inherited in different genotypes. Transcriptome and metabolome analyses showed that genes associated with the phenylpropanoid synthesis pathway are enriched in DHR1 compared with ZM24. Flavonoid metabolites are enriched in DHR1, whereas lignin metabolites are reduced. The enhancement of flavonoids likely results in differential expression of auxin signal pathway genes and alters the auxin response, subsequently affecting cell elongation. This study provides a new strategy for generating dwarfs and will accelerate advancements in light simplification in the cultivation and mechanized harvesting of cotton.

Verticillium dahliae causes significant losses in cotton production. To reveal the mechanism of the defense response to V. dahliae in cotton, transcriptomic analyses were performed using cotton cultivars M138 (V. dahliae-resistant) and P2 (V. dahliae-susceptible). The results revealed 11,076 and 6,640 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in response to V. dahliae, respectively. The weighted gene co-expression network analysis of 4,633 transcription factors (TFs) indicated a “MEblue” module containing 654 TFs that strongly correlate with resistance to V. dahliae. Among these TFs, the ethylene response factor Ghi_A05G10166 (GhERF91) was identified as a putative hub gene with a defense response against V. dahliae. A virus-induced gene silencing assay and exogenous application of ethephon showed that GhERF91 is activated by ethylene and positively regulates the response to V. dahliae exposure in cotton. This study provides fundamental transcriptome data and a putative causal gene (GhERF91) associated with resistance to V. dahliae, as well as genetic resources for breeding V. dahliae-resistant cotton.

Cotton is an important natural fiber crop worldwide which plays a vital role in our daily life. High yield is a constant goal of cotton breeding, and lint percentage (LP) is one of the important components of cotton fiber yield. A stable QTL controlling LP, qLPA01.1, was identified on chromosome A01 from Gossypium hirsutum introgressed lines with G. tomentosum chromosome segments in a previous study. To fine-map qLPA01.1, an F2 population with 986 individuals was established by crossing G. hirsutum cultivar CCRI35 with the chromosome segment substitution line HT_390. A high-resolution genetic map including 47 loci and spanning 56.98 cM was constructed in the QTL region, and qLPA01.1 was ultimately mapped into an interval corresponding to an ~80 kb genome region of chromosome A01 in the reference genome, which contained six annotated genes. Transcriptome data and sequence analysis revealed that S-acyltransferase protein 24 (GoPAT24) might be the target gene of qLPA01.1. This result provides the basis for cotton fiber yield improvement via marker-assisted selection (MAS) and further studies on the mechanism of cotton fiber development.

Soil microorganisms play critical roles in ecosystem function. However, the relative impact of the potassium (K) fertilizer gradient on the microbial community in wheat-maize double-cropping systems remains unclear. In this long-term field experiment (2008–2019), we researched bacterial and fungal diversity, composition, and community assemblage in the soil along a K fertilizer gradient in the wheat season (K0, no K fertilizer; K1, 45 kg ha−1 K2O; K2, 90 kg ha−1 K2O; K3, 135 kg ha−1 K2O) and in the maize season (K0, no K fertilizer; K1, 150 kg ha−1 K2O; K2, 300 kg ha−1 K2O; K3, 450 kg ha−1 K2O) using bacterial 16S rRNA and fungal internally transcribed spacer (ITS) data. We observed that environmental variables, such as mean annual soil temperature (MAT) and precipitation, available K, ammonium, nitrate, and organic matter, impacted the soil bacterial and fungal communities, and their impacts varied with fertilizer treatments and crop species. Furthermore, the relative abundance of bacteria involved in soil nutrient transformation (phylum Actinobacteria and class Alphaproteobacteria) in the wheat season was significantly increased compared to the maize season, and the optimal K fertilizer dosage (K2 treatment) boosted the relative bacterial abundance of soil nutrient transformation (genus Lactobacillus) and soil denitrification (phylum Proteobacteria) bacteria in the wheat season. The abundance of the soil bacterial community promoting root growth and nutrient absorption (genus Herbaspirillum) in the maize season was improved compared to the wheat season, and the K2 treatment enhanced the bacterial abundance of soil nutrient transformation (genus MND1) and soil nitrogen cycling (genus Nitrospira) genera in the maize season. The results indicated that the bacterial and fungal communities in the double-cropping system exhibited variable sensitivities and assembly mechanisms along a K fertilizer gradient, and microhabitats explained the largest amount of the variation in crop yields, and improved wheat-maize yields by 11.2–22.6 and 9.2–23.8% with K addition, respectively. These modes are shaped contemporaneously by the different meteorological factors and soil nutrient changes in the K fertilizer gradients.

The footprints of water and nitrogen (WF and NF) provide a comprehensive overview of the type and quantity of water consumption and reactive nitrogen (Nr) loss in crop production. In this study, a field experiment over two years (2019 and 2020) compared three integrated agronomic practice management (IAPM) systems: An improved management system (T2), a high-yield production system (T3), and an integrated soil–crop management system (ISCM) using a local smallholder farmer's practice system (T1) as control, to investigate the responses of WF, Nr losses, water use efficiency (WUE), and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) to IAPM. The results showed that IAPM optimized water distribution and promoted water use by summer maize. The evapotranspiration over the whole maize growth period of IAPM increased, but yield increased more, leading to a significant increase in WUE. The WUE of the T2, T3, and ISCM treatments was significantly greater than in the T1 treatment, in 2019 and 2020 respectively, by 19.8–21.5, 31.8–40.6, and 34.4–44.6%. The lowest WF was found in the ISCM treatment, which was 31.0% lower than that of the T1 treatment. In addition, the ISCM treatment optimized soil total nitrogen (TN) distribution and significantly increased TN in the cultivated layer. Excessive nitrogen fertilizer was applied in treatment T3, producing the highest maize yield, and resulting in the highest Nr losses. In contrast, the ISCM treatment used a reduced nitrogen fertilizer rate, sacrificing grain yield partly, which reduced Nr losses and eventually led to a significant increase in nitrogen use efficiency and nitrogen recovery. The Nr level in the ISCM treatment was 34.8% lower than in the T1 treatment while NUE was significantly higher than in the T1 treatment by 56.8–63.1% in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Considering yield, WUE, NUE, WF, and NF together, ISCM should be used as a more sustainable and clean system for sustainable production of summer maize.

During the boll formation stage, cotton bolls exhibit the lowest expression of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticidal proteins. Resistance to insects varies notably among different organs, which poses challenges for controlling cotton bollworms. Consequently, an experimental strategy was designed in the 2020–2021 cotton growing season to coordinate the enhancement of protein synthesis and the attenuation of degradation. Two Bt cultivars of Gossypium hirsutum, namely the hybrid Sikang 3 and the conventional Sikang 1, were used as test materials. Three treatments were applied at the peak flowering period: CK (the control), T1 (amino acids), and T2 (amino acids and EDTA). The results show that, in comparison to the CK group, the Bt protein contents were significantly increased in both cotton bolls and their subtending leaves under the T1 and T2 treatments. The maximum levels of increase observed were 67.5% in cotton bolls and 21.7% in leaves. Moreover, the disparity in Bt protein content between cotton bolls and their subtending leaves notably decreased by 31.2%. Correlation analysis suggested that the primary physiological mechanisms for augmenting Bt protein content involve increased protein synthesis and reduced protein catabolism, which are independent of Bt gene expression levels. Stepwise regression and path analysis revealed that elevating the soluble protein content and transaminase activity, while reducing the catabolic enzyme activities, are instrumental in enhancing the Bt protein content. Consequently, the coordinated application of amino acids and EDTA emerges as a strategy that can improve the overall resistance of Bt cotton and mitigate the spatiotemporal variations in Bt toxin concentrations in both cotton bolls and leaves.

Activity of bc1 complex kinase (ABC1K) is an atypical protein kinase (aPK) that plays a crucial role in plant mitochondrial and plastid stress responses, but little is known about the responses of ABC1Ks to stress in cotton (Gossypium spp.). Here, we identified 40 ABC1Ks in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and found that the GhABC1Ks were unevenly distributed across 17 chromosomes. The GhABC1K family members included 35 paralogous gene pairs and were expanded by segmental duplication. The GhABC1K promoter sequences contained diverse cis-acting regulatory elements relevant to hormone or stress responses. The qRT-PCR results revealed that most GhABC1Ks were upregulated by exposure to different stresses. GhABC1K2-A05 and GhABC1K12-A07 expression levels were upregulated by at least three stress treatments. These genes were further functionally characterized by virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS). Compared with the controls, the GhABC1K2-A05- and GhABC1K12-A07-silenced cotton lines exhibited higher malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, lower catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and reduced chlorophyll and soluble sugar contents under NaCl and PEG stress. In addition, the expression levels of six stress marker genes (GhDREB2A, GhSOS1, GhCIPK6, GhSOS2, GhWRKY33, and GhRD29A) were significantly downregulated after stress in the GhABC1K2-A05- and GhABC1K12-A07-silenced lines. The results indicate that knockdown of GhABC1K2-A05 and GhABC1K12-A07 make cotton more sensitive to salt and PEG stress. These findings can provide valuable information for intensive studies of GhABC1Ks in the responses and resistance of cotton to abiotic stresses.

The germination process of seeds is influenced by the interplay between two opposing factors, pectin methylesterase (PME) and pectin methylesterase inhibitor (PMEI), which collectively regulate patterns of pectin methylesterification. Despite the recognized importance of pectin methylesterification in seed germination, the specific mechanisms that govern this process remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that the overexpression of GhPMEI53 is associated with a decrease in PME activity and an increase in pectin methylesterification. This leads to seed cell wall softening, which positively regulates cotton seed germination. AtPMEI19, the homologue in Arabidopsis thaliana, plays a similar role in seed germination to GhPMEI53, indicating a conserved function and mechanism of PMEI in seed germination regulation. Further studies revealed that GhPMEI53 and AtPMEI19 directly contribute to promoting radicle protrusion and seed germination by inducing cell wall softening and reducing mechanical strength. Additionally, the pathways of abscicic acid (ABA) and gibberellin (GA) in the transgenic materials showed significant changes, suggesting that GhPMEI53/AtPMEI19-mediated pectin methylesterification serves as a regulatory signal for the related phytohormones involved in seed germination. In summary, GhPMEI53 and its homologs alter the mechanical properties of cell walls, which influence the mechanical resistance of the endosperm or testa. Moreover, they impact cellular phytohormone pathways (e.g., ABA and GA) to regulate seed germination. These findings enhance our understanding of pectin methylesterification in cellular morphological dynamics and signaling transduction, and contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the PME/PMEI gene superfamily in plants.

The exogenous application of melatonin by the root drenching method is an effective way to improve crop drought resistance. However, the optimal concentration of melatonin by root drenching and the physiological mechanisms underlying melatonin-induced drought tolerance in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) roots remain elusive. This study determined the optimal concentration of melatonin by root drenching and explored the protective effects of melatonin on cotton roots. The results showed that 50 μmol L−1 melatonin was optimal and significantly mitigated the inhibitory effect of drought on cotton seedling growth. Exogenous melatonin promoted root development in drought-stressed cotton plants by remarkably increasing the root length, projected area, surface area, volume, diameter, and biomass. Melatonin also mitigated the drought-weakened photosynthetic capacity of cotton and regulated the endogenous hormone contents by regulating the relative expression levels of hormone-synthesis genes under drought stress. Melatonin-treated cotton seedlings maintained optimal enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant capacities, and produced relatively lower levels of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde, thus reducing the drought stress damage to cotton roots (such as mitochondrial damage). Moreover, melatonin alleviated the yield and fiber length declines caused by drought stress. Taken together, these findings show that root drenching with exogenous melatonin increases the cotton yield by enhancing root development and reducing the root damage induced by drought stress. In summary, these results provide a foundation for the application of melatonin in the field by the root drenching method.

Root system architecture plays an essential role in water and nutrient acquisition in plants, and it is significantly involved in plant adaptations to various environmental stresses. In this study, a panel of 242 cotton accessions was collected to investigate six root morphological traits at the seedling stage, including main root length (MRL), root fresh weight (RFW), total root length (TRL), root surface area (RSA), root volume (RV), and root average diameter (AvgD). The correlation analysis of the six root morphological traits revealed strong positive correlations of TRL with RSA, as well as RV with RSA and AvgD, whereas a significant negative correlation was found between TRL and AvgD. Subsequently, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed using the root phenotypic and genotypic data reported previously for the 242 accessions using 56,010 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the CottonSNP80K array. A total of 41 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified, including nine for MRL, six for RFW, nine for TRL, 12 for RSA, 12 for RV and two for AvgD. Among them, eight QTLs were repeatedly detected in two or more traits. Integrating these results with a transcriptome analysis, we identified 17 candidate genes with high transcript values of transcripts per million (TPM)≥30 in the roots. Furthermore, we functionally verified the candidate gene GH_D05G2106, which encodes a WPP domain protein 2 in root development. A virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) assay showed that knocking down GH_D05G2106 significantly inhibited root development in cotton, indicating its positive role in root system architecture formation. Collectively, these results provide a theoretical basis and candidate genes for future studies on cotton root developmental biology and root-related cotton breeding.

Abiotic and biotic stressors adversely affect plant survival, biomass generation, and crop yields. As the global availability of arable land declines and the impacts of global warming intensify, such stressors may have increasingly pronounced effects on agricultural productivity. Currently, researchers face the overarching challenge of comprehensively enhancing plant resilience to abiotic and biotic stressors. The secondary cell wall plays a crucial role in bolstering the stress resistance of plants. To increase plant resistance to stress through genetic manipulation of the secondary cell wall, we cloned a cell wall protein designated glycine-rich protein-like (GhGRPL) from cotton fibers, and found that it is specifically expressed during the period of secondary cell wall biosynthesis. Notably, this protein differs from its Arabidopsis homolog, AtGRP, since its glycine-rich domain is deficient in glycine residues. GhGRPL is involved in secondary cell wall deposition. Upregulation of GhGRPL enhances lignin accumulation and, consequently, the thickness of the secondary cell walls, thereby increasing the plant's resistance to abiotic stressors, such as drought and salinity, and biotic threats, including Verticillium dahliae infection. Conversely, interference with GhGRPL expression in cotton reduces lignin accumulation and compromises that resistance. Taken together, our findings elucidate the role of GhGRPL in regulating secondary cell wall development through its influence on lignin deposition, which, in turn, reinforces cell wall robustness and impermeability. These findings highlight the promising near-future prospect of adopting GhGRPL as a viable, effective approach for enhancing plant resilience to abiotic and biotic stress factors.

Pectin is a major constituent of the plant cell wall. Pectate lyase (PEL, EC 4.2.2.2) uses anti-β-elimination chemistry to cleave the α-1,4 glycosidic linkage in the homogalacturonan region of pectin. However, limited information is available on the comprehensive and evolutionary analysis of PELs in the Malvaceae. In this study, we identified 597 PEL genes from 10 Malvaceae species. Phylogenetic and motif analyses revealed that these PELs are classified into six subfamilies: Clades I, II, III, IV, Va, and Vb. The two largest subfamilies, Clades I and II, contained 237 and 222 PEL members, respectively. The members of Clades Va and Vb only contained four or five motifs, far fewer than the other subfamilies. Gene duplication analysis showed that segmental duplication played a crucial role in the expansion of the PEL gene family in Gossypium species. The PELs from Clades I, IV, Va, and Vb were expressed during the fiber elongation stage, but nearly all PEL genes from Clades II and III showed no expression in any of the investigated fiber developmental stages. We further performed single-gene haplotype association analysis in 2,001 G. hirsutum accessions and 229 G. barbadense accessions. Interestingly, 14 PELs were significantly associated with fiber length and strength traits in G. barbadense with superior fiber quality, while only eight GhPEL genes were found to be significantly associated with fiber quality traits in G. hirsutum. Our findings provide important information for further evolutionary and functional research on the PEL gene family members and their potential use for fiber quality improvement in cotton.

Cotton breeding for the development of early-maturing varieties is an effective way to improve multiple cropping indexes and alleviate the conflict between grains and cotton in the cultivated fields in China. In the present study, we aimed to identify upland cotton quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and candidate genes related to early-maturity traits, including whole growth period (WGP), flowering timing (FT), node of the first fruiting branch (NFFB), height of the node of the first fruiting branch (HNFFB), and plant height (PH). An early-maturing variety, CCRI50, and a late-maturing variety, Guoxinmian 11, were crossed to obtain biparental populations. These populations were used to map QTLs for the early-maturity traits for two years (2020 and 2021). With BSA-seq analysis based on the data of population 2020, the candidate regions related to early maturity were found to be located on chromosome D03. We then developed 22 polymorphic insertions or deletions (InDel) markers to further narrow down the candidate regions, resulting in the detection of five and four QTLs in the 2020 and 2021 populations, respectively. According to the results of QTL mapping, two candidate regions (InDel_G286-InDel_G144 and InDel_G24-InDel_G43) were detected. In these regions, three genes (GH_D03G0451, GH_D03G0649, and GH_D03G1180) have non-synonymous mutations in their exons and one gene (GH_D03G0450) has SNP variations in the upstream sequence between CCRI50 and Guoxinmian 11. These four genes also showed dominant expression in the floral organs. The expression levels of GH_D03G0451, GH_D03G0649 and GH_D03G1180 were significantly higher in CCRI50 than in Guoxinmian 11 during the bud differentiation stages, while GH_D03G0450 showed the opposite trend. Further functional verification of GH_D03G0451 indicated that the GH_D03G0451-silenced plants showed a delay in the flowering time. The results suggest that these are the candidate genes for cotton early maturity, and they may be used for breeding early-maturity cotton varieties.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) holds global significance as a fruit with high economic and nutritional value. Exploring the regulatory network of watermelon male reproductive development is crucial for developing male sterile materials and facilitating cross-breeding. Despite its importance, there is a lack of research on the regulation mechanism of male reproductive development in watermelon. In this study, we identified that ClESR2, a VIIIb subclass member in the APETALA2/Ethylene Responsive Factor (AP2/ERF) superfamily, was a key factor in pollen development. RNA in situ hybridization confirmed significant ClESR2 expression in the tapetum and pollen during the later stage of anther development. The pollens of transgenic plants showed major defects in morphology and vitality at the late development stage. The RNA-seq and protein interaction assay confirmed that ClESR2 regulates pollen morphology and fertility by interacting with key genes involved in pollen development at both transcriptional and protein levels. These suggest that Enhancer of Shoot Regeneration 2 (ESR2) plays an important role in pollen maturation and vitality. This study helps understand the male reproductive development of watermelon, providing a theoretical foundation for developing male sterile materials.

Verticillium dahliae is an important fungal pathogen affecting cotton yield and quality. Therefore, the mining of V. dahlia-resistance genes is urgently needed. Proteases and protease inhibitors play crucial roles in plant defense responses. However, the functions and regulatory mechanisms of the protease inhibitor PR6 gene family remain largely unknown. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the PR6 gene family in the cotton genome. We performed genome-wide identification and functional characterization of the cotton GhPR6 gene family, which belongs to the potato protease inhibitor I family of inhibitors. Thirty-nine PR6s were identified in Gossypium arboreum, G. raimondii, G. barbadense, and G. hirsutum, and they were clustered into four groups. Based on the analysis of pathogen-induced and Ghlmm transcriptome data, GhPR6-5b was identified as the key gene for V. dahliae resistance. Virus-induced gene silencing experiments revealed that cotton was more sensitive to V. dahliae V991 after PR6-5b silencing. The present study established that GhWRKY75 plays an important role in resistance to Verticillium wilt in cotton by positively regulating GhPR6-5b expression by directly binding to the W-box TTGAC(T/C). Our findings established that GhWRKY75 is a potential candidate for improving cotton resistance to V. dahliae, and provide primary information for further investigations and the development of specific strategies to bolster the defense mechanisms of cotton against V. dahliae.

Seed size is an important agronomic trait in melons that directly affects seed germination and subsequent seedling growth. However, the genetic mechanism underlying seed size in melon remains unclear. In the present study, we employed Bulked-Segregant Analysis sequencing (BSA-seq) to identify a candidate region (~1.35 Mb) on chromosome 6 that corresponds to seed size. This interval was confirmed by QTL mapping of three seed size-related traits from an F2 population across three environments. This mapping region represented nine QTLs that shared an overlapping region on chromosome 6, collectively referred to as qSS6.1. New InDel markers were developed in the qSS6.1 region, narrowing it down to a 68.35 kb interval that contains eight annotated genes. Sequence variation analysis of the eight genes identified a SNP with a C to T transition mutation in the promoter region of MELO3C014002, a leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase (LRR-RLK) gene. This mutation affected the promoter activity of the MELO3C014002 gene and was successfully used to differentiate the large-seeded accessions (C-allele) from the small-seeded accessions (T-allele). qRT-PCR revealed differential expression of MELO3C014002 between the two parental lines. Its predicted protein has typical LRR-RLK family domains, and phylogenetic analyses reveled its similarity with the homologs in several plant species. Altogether, these findings suggest MELO3C014002 as the most likely candidate gene involved in melon seed size regulation. Our results will be helpful for better understanding the genetic mechanism regulating seed size in melons and for genetically improving this important trait through molecular breeding pathways.

Improving plant resistance to Verticillium wilt (VW), which causes massive losses in Gossypium hirsutum, is a global challenge. Crop plants need to efficiently allocate their limited energy resources to maintain a balance between growth and defense. However, few transcriptional regulators specifically respond to Verticillium dahliae and the underlying mechanism has not been identified in cotton. In this study, we found that the that expression of most R2R3-MYB members in cotton is significantly changed by V. dahliae infection relative to the other MYB types. One novel R2R3-MYB transcription factor (TF) that specifically responds to V. dahliae, GhMYB3D5, was identified. GhMYB3D5 was not expressed in 15 cotton tissues under normal conditions, but it was dramatically induced by V. dahliae stress. We functionally characterized its positive role and underlying mechanism in VW resistance. Upon V. dahliae infection, the up-regulated GhMYB3D5 bound to the GhADH1 promoter and activated GhADH1 expression. In addition, GhMYB3D5 physically interacted with GhADH1 and further enhanced the transcriptional activation of GhADH1. Consequently, the transcriptional regulatory module GhMYB3D5-GhADH1 then promoted lignin accumulation by improving the transcriptional levels of genes related to lignin biosynthesis (GhPAL, GhC4H, Gh4CL, and GhPOD/GhLAC) in cotton, thereby enhancing cotton VW resistance. Our results demonstrated that the GhMYB3D5 promotes defense-induced lignin accumulation, which can be regarded as an effective way to orchestrate plant immunity and growth.

Potato cyst nematodes (PCNs) are a significant threat to potato production, having caused substantial damage in many countries. Predicting the future distribution of PCN species is crucial to implementing effective biosecurity strategies, especially given the impact of climate change on pest species invasion and distribution. Machine learning (ML), specifically ensemble models, has emerged as a powerful tool in predicting species distributions due to its ability to learn and make predictions based on complex data sets. Thus, this research utilised advanced machine learning techniques to predict the distribution of PCN species under climate change conditions, providing the initial element for invasion risk assessment. We first used Global Climate Models to generate homogeneous climate predictors to mitigate the variation among predictors. Then, five machine learning models were employed to build two groups of ensembles, single-algorithm ensembles (ESA) and multi-algorithm ensembles (EMA), and compared their performances. In this research, the EMA did not always perform better than the ESA, and the ESA of Artificial Neural Network gave the highest performance while being cost-effective. Prediction results indicated that the distribution range of PCNs would shift northward with a decrease in tropical zones and an increase in northern latitudes. However, the total area of suitable regions will not change significantly, occupying 16–20% of the total land surface (18% under current conditions). This research alerts policymakers and practitioners to the risk of PCNs’ incursion into new regions. Additionally, this ML process offers the capability to track changes in the distribution of various species and provides scientifically grounded evidence for formulating long-term biosecurity plans for their control.

Wampee (Clausena lansium) is an important evergreen fruit tree native to southern China that has a long history of use for medicinal purposes. Here, a chromosome-level genome of C. lansium was constructed with a genome size of 282.9 Mb and scaffold N50 of 30.75 Mb. The assembled genome contains 48.70% repetitive elements and 24,381 protein-coding genes. Comparative genomic analysis showed that C. lansium diverged from Aurantioideae 15.91–24.95 million years ago. Additionally, some expansive and specific gene families related to methyltransferase activity and S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methyltransferase activity were also identified. Further analysis indicated that N-methyltransferase (NMT) is mainly involved in alkaloid biosynthesis and O-methyltransferase (OMT) participates in the regulation of coumarin accumulation in wampee. This suggested that wampee's richness in alkaloids and coumarins might be due to the gene expansions of NMT and OMT. The tandem repeat event was one of the major reasons for the NMT expansion. Hence, the reference genome of C. lansium will facilitate the identification of some useful medicinal compounds from wampee resources and reveal their biosynthetic pathways.

El uso continuo de fertilizantes nitrogenados en exceso genera riesgos ambientales al aumentar en el suelo la acumulación, volatilización y lixiviación de nitratos, que provocan pérdidas y baja eficiencia en la utilización de N. En este estudio, el objetivo fue evaluar la aplicación de nanocompuestos nitrogenados (NCN) como fertilizante de liberación lenta en el suelo y su efecto en el crecimiento del cultivo de lechuga. El NCN se preparó por la sorción de un surfactante catiónico en una arcilla de bentonita. El estudio se realizó en columnas de suelo, los tratamientos evaluados fueron relaciones de NCN y fertilizante convencional (FC) 25/0, 50/0, 75/0 y 100/0, 0/100, 25/75, 50/50 y 75/25. Las variables evaluadas fueron: peso fresco, biomasa seca, área foliar, conductividad eléctrica, concentración de NO3- en lixiviado y hoja, unidades SPAD y NDVI, además de la liberación del NCN en agua desionizada. Los resultados obtenidos indican que después de 40 días los tratamientos con NCN igualaron al control excepto el tratamiento 25/0 que redujo las variables peso fresco 20% y el área foliar 18% con respecto al control 0/100. Los valores de SPAD y NVDI no tuvieron diferencias significativas entre tratamientos. Las relaciones NCN/FC 0/100, 50/50 y 75/25 aumentaron 19% la concentración de nitratos en hojas. El tratamiento 100/0 aumentó biomasa seca total con 48%, 87% el volumen radical y 73% la biomasa seca de raíz. Los resultados de la liberación en agua desionizada confirmaron que el NCN libera gradualmente nitratos y en mayor cantidad que lo calculado. Finalmente, se concluye que el material nanocompuesto tiene el potencial de usarse como fertilizante de lenta liberación al aumentar crecimiento, por lo que podría ser una alternativa para reducir el uso de fertilizantes convencionales y disminuir las pérdidas de nitrógeno en suelo.

【Objective】 Nitrogen leaching and ammonia volatilization are major pathways for nitrogen loss in agricultural systems, influenced by various factors. This study investigates the effect of water and nitrogen management practices on these nitrogen loss pathways in winter wheat fields in the Yellow River Basin. 【Method】 The WHCNS model was used in our study. Field-measured data were used to calibrate the model, which was then used to simulate nitrogen leaching and ammonia volatilization during the greening and ripening stages of the winter wheat. The simulation results were analysed to optimize water and nitrogen management practices using the CRITIC-TOPSIS method. 【Result】 The consistency indices and coefficients of determination between the simulated and measured soil water content, nitrate nitrogen and ammoniacal nitrogen in the 0-100 cm soil layer varied from 0.842 to 0.973 and 0.666 7 to 0.988 4, respectively. Following nitrogen fertilization, the cumulative nitrate nitrogen loss via leaching from the soil increased first and then decreased with the increase in the number of irrigations in the first seven days after the fertilization. In the first seven days after the fertilization, ammonia volatilization accounted for 93.0% to 98.2% of the total ammonia volatilization. Our simulated results showed that the optimal water and nitrogen management for winter wheat in the region was to apply 220 kg/hm2 of nitrogen fertilizer and keep soil water content in the root zone above 70% of the field capacity, achieving a grain yield of 8 185.30 kg/hm2. The associated nitrate nitrogen loss was 12.011 kg/hm2 and ammonia volatilization was 1.969 kg/hm2. 【Conclusion】 For winter wheat in the Yellow River Basin, the optimal irrigation and nitrogen fertilization is to apply 220 kg/hm2 of nitrogen fertilizer and maintain soil moisture at no less than 70% of the field capacity.

【Objective】 The Barkol Lake Basin is located in the east of Xinjiang of China, and groundwater plays a pivotal role in supporting agriculture, livestock and other sectors in the region. This study aims to analyze the chemical characteristics and health risks associated with groundwater in the plain areas in the basin. 【Method】 The analysis utilized groundwater quality data collected in August 2022. Factors influencing groundwater chemistry were evaluated using ion ratio and saturation index methods. Groundwater quality and the associated health risks were assessed with the entropy weight water quality index method and a health risk assessment model. 【Result】 The groundwater in the study area is weakly alkaline, with low salinity and moderate hardness. Its hydrochemical profile is primarily of the HCO₃·SO₄-Ca·Na type. The chemical properties are predominantly influenced by rock weathering and cation exchange. In the region, 75.0% of the groundwater is deemed drinkable without treatment, 8.3% is of moderate quality, and 16.7% is undrinkable without further treatment. The non-carcinogenic health risk index for Na⁺ is the highest, with children facing a greater potential non-carcinogenic risk compared to adults. 【Conclusion】 Overall, groundwater quality in the area is satisfactory, though there are potential risks in the northern part of Bolqiangji Town. This analysis provides a baseline for ensuring the safe use of groundwater in the region.

【Objective】 Crops are vulnerable to drought and waterlogging at their seedling stages. Experience-based irrigation and drainage is not effective to alleviate water stresses that seedlings could face. This paper presents an automatic drainage and irrigation system we developed for seedlings of direct-seeded rice. 【Method】 The system includes a micro-sprinkler irrigation system and an automatic drainage device. They are controlled by a LoRa wireless communication network; the irrigation - drainage scheduling was calculated by the fuzzy control algorithm, based on the dynamics of soil moisture and growth of the seedlings measured in the field. The applicability of the system in the fields was evaluated using performance indicators and drainage device performance indicators. 【Result】 ① In the terms of performance, the delay in the response of the system was 0.398 s, the decision-making time was 1.348 s, and the errors of the information monitoring was ±1.48%. ② The automatic drainage device took 4-6 s to close or open, and the standby electric current was 21.7 mA. ③ Experimental results showed that the systems can control soil moisture at 85% of the field capacity 15 days after the seed-drilling; the survival rate of the seedlings was 83.9%. 【Conclusion】 The automatic irrigation and drainage system for seedlings of direct-drilled rice is energy-efficient. It can maintain soil moisture in the proximity of the soil surface around the designed value, alleviating water stress and improving the survival of the seedlings of the directly drilled rice.

【Objective】 The rubber ring is a crucial component in fracturing pumps, yet it is highly prone to erosion. This study investigates the effects of fracturing particles on erosion and wear of the rubber ring. 【Method】 The study was based on the 3 500 HP fracturing pump. The fluid domain model for its valve body at the hydraulic end was developed using the finite element software COMSOL. The impact of the factors, including particle concentration, particle diameter, and angle of the valve body cone, on the erosion and wear of the rubber seal was analyzed. Mechanical models for a single particle and multi particle erosion of the rubber ring were established using the finite element software ABAQUS, which was used to analyzed the effects of particle shape, erosion speed, impact angle, and impact frequency on erosion and wear of the ring. 【Result】 ①To improve the resistance of the rubber ring against wear and erosion, the angle of the valve body cone should be more than 70°. We found that the lower the particle concentration was, the less susceptible the rubber ring was to wear. When the diameter of solid particles was doubled, the two-phase velocity was increased by about 25%, but this had little effect on the wear of the pump valve. ②Increasing the speed of erosion increased the erosion wear. The rubber ring was more likely to absorb the energy of sharp particles at low angle of attack, while it is more likely to absorb the energy of blunt particles at 90° impact. Under the impact of the multiple particles, blunt particles can cause fatigue failure of the rubber ring, while sharp particles can cause tensile failure of the material surface. 【Conclusion】 For the 3 500 HP fracturing pump we studied, the erosion and wear of the rubber ring can be ameliorated by reducing solid particle concentration, increasing the valve cone angle and roundness of the solid particles.

【Objective】 Brackish water has been used as a complementary resource for irrigation in regions that are scarce of freshwater. This paper investigates the effect of irrigation using combined brackish water and biogas slurry on dry matter accumulation, fruit yield and quality of greenhouse tomatoes. 【Method】 The two-year experiment was conducted from 2022 to 2023. It consisted of three treatments by controlling salt concentration of the irrigation water at 2, 3 5 g/L and 5 g/L respectively. The crop was irrigated using different combinations of these saline waters and biogas slurry at seedling, flowering and fruit development, and fruit ripening stage, respectively. The control was irrigation with freshwater. In each treatment, we measured dry matter accumulation, yield and quality of the fruits, irrigation water use efficiency, and fruit ion contents. The comprehensive fruit quality benefits to tomato production were evaluated using the principal component analysis method and the combination evaluation method. 【Result】 Irrigation using saline water with salt concentration of 5 g/L and biogas slurry at seedling, flowering and fruit development stages reduced dry matter accumulation in all tomato organs. Regardless of salt concentration of the irrigation water, irrigation using brackish water and biogas slurry reduced the ultimate fruit yield due to the decreased individual fruit quality rather than because of the number of fruit sets per plant. However, it improved fruit quality, contents of soluble sugar, titrable acid, soluble solid matter, vitamin C and soluble protein, and reduced the ratio of sugar to acid. Comprehensive quality parameter evaluation gave the highest score when salt content of the irrigating water did not exceed 2 g/L at the seedling stage, 3 g/L at the flowering and fruit development stage, and 5 g/L at the fruit ripening stage. All treatments reduced the accumulation of Na+ and Ca2+ in the fruits, although the reduction varied with salt concentration of the irrigation water. 【Conclusion】 In regions where freshwater resources are scarce and brackish water resources are abundant, brackish water and biogas slurry can be used as a complementary irrigation resource. For irrigating greenhouse tomatoes, the best irrigation schedule is to control salt content of the irrigation water not to exceed 2 g/L at the seedling stage, 3 g/L at the flowering and fruiting development stage, and 5 g/L at the fruit ripening stage.

【Objective】 This paper is to propose a method to optimize ecological space zoning and develop scientific management strategies for watersheds. The focus is on clarifying the synergies and trade-offs among mountains, waters, forests, farmlands, lakes, and grasslands. 【Method】 The study takes the Hongfeng Lake watershed as a case study. It is a typical watershed consisting of mountains, water, forests, fields, lakes and grasses. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to calculates synergies and trade-offs between these sub-ecosystems at both basin scale and local scale. The ecological zoning in the watershed was analyzed by considering the synergistic relationships between mountains, waters, forests, farmlands, lakes and grasslands. 【Result】 The study revealed significant spatial variation in ecological zones within the studied areas. It identified contrasting spatial relationships in the distribution of synergies and trade-offs, particularly between water and other subsystems, as defined by the water intersection line. Key findings include differentiated ecological protection roles of forests and grasslands, high pollution risks facing lakes, and the reliance on rainfall for agriculture outside regions where lakes effectively manage water storage. The watershed was classified into nine ecological control zones, including urban water source protection zones and ecological agricultural zones along the lake and its tributaries. Additionally, mountain areas were designated as ecological industrial development and conservation zones, water source conservation zones, and geo-hazard risk zones. 【Conclusion】 By analyzing the coordination and trade-offs among various ecological components, this study ensures the maximization of ecological diversity within each zoning type. The findings highlight the need for tailored management strategies across different zones to address their unique ecological needs and challenges.

【Objective】 The presence of undigested antibiotics used in livestock farming poses significant environmental concerns, as their disposal into water and soil can lead to contamination of the food chain. This paper presents the analysis of the distribution and concentration of these antibiotics in both soil and groundwater. 【Method】 Soil and groundwater samples were collected from an intensive livestock farming area in H county. Antibiotics and hormones in these samples were analysed using the high-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. 【Result】 ① On average, there was more sulfonamide (SAs) in soil than in groundwater. All but megestrone acetate hormones were found in soil and groundwater, although there were more in soil than in groundwater. ② Sulfamethiazole, sulfonamide intermethacil, sulfonamide and sulfoamine were found in soil. In the groundwater, the concentrations of sulfonamide intermethacil and sulfamquinoxine were higher than the concentration of other antibiotics. ③ The concentration of hormone KTY04 was higher in the 0-20 cm soil layer than in the 60-80 cm layer. In the studied area, adrenocorticoid, testosterone, and notestosterone were the dominant hormones, with their mass concentration reaching 325 ng/L. 【Conclusion】 Our study found higher mass concentrations of sulfonamides in soil than in groundwater, except estrogen whose concentration was high in groundwater and moderate in soil. The presence of antibiotics and hormones from livestock farming could lead to increased contamination of both soil and groundwater, particularly sulfonamides and estrogens. Continuous monitoring is needed to assess their potential impacts on ecosystems.

【Objective】 Reducing chemical fertilizer use while increasing organic fertilization has been proposed as a solution to mitigate nonpoint source pollution and soil degradation caused by chemical fertilizers. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the effects of this approach on yield, nutrient uptake, and nitrogen use efficiency of maize in dryland areas of Shanxi Province. 【Method】 The experiment was conducted from 2021 to 2023. The fertilization treatments were: 100% of chemical fertilization (NPK), reducing chemical fertilization by 40%, 30% and 20% combined with an application of biochar organic manure (SWC40, SWC30, SWC30), or an application of organic manure (JZ40, JZ30, JZ20), respectively. The control was no fertilization (CK). During the experiment, we measured the yield, nutrient uptake and nitrogen utilization efficiency of the crop consecutively for three years. 【Result】 A rational combination of chemical fertilization reduction and organic fertilization not only significantly increased grain yield and aboveground biomass, but also improved nutrient uptake and accumulation, as well as nitrogen use efficiency. Compared with NPK, SWC40 increased grain yield by 14.69%, 9.88% and 25.62% in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively, while no significant differences in these traits were found between JZ30 and NPK. In 2023, the cumulative uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the grains in SWC40 were 145.64, 38.30 and 38.07 kg/hm2, respectively. Compared with NPK, SWC40 increased cumulative uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the grains by 38.36%, 56.14% and 46.59%, cumulative uptake of N, P and K in the aboveground part by 64.08%, 84.32% and 84.43%, reaching 311.79 kg/hm2, 69.49 kg/hm2 and 204.22 kg/hm2, respectively. The nitrogen agronomic efficiency, nitrogen partial factor productivity, nitrogen contribution rate and nitrogen apparent utilization rate in SWC40 were 6.80 kg/kg, 15.64 kg/kg, 43.53% and 31.01%, respectively, significantly higher than those in NPK. 【Conclusion】 Reducing chemical fertilization combined with an application of biochar or organic manure was more effective in improving maize yield and nutrient accumulation than combined with fine organic manure. In particular, reducing chemical fertilization by 40% combined with biochar organic manure application was most effective, followed by reducing 30% of chemical fertilization combined with fine organic manure application.

【Objective】 Cotton production in Xinjiang relies on irrigation. However, in regions with shallow saline groundwater, managing irrigation to avoid soil salinity is crucial to sustaining cotton growth. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the influence of mulched drip irrigation amount on cotton yield and water use efficiency of irrigation water in regions characterized by shallow saline groundwater. 【Method】 The experiment was conducted from April 2022 to October 2023. It compared four irrigation amounts: 300 mm(W1), 375 mm(W2), 450 mm(W3) and 525 mm(W4). In each treatment, we measured spatiotemporal changes in soil water and soil salt content, groundwater table and ground salinity, as well as growth, yield and water-use efficiency of the cotton. 【Result】 ① Soil desalination rate increased with irrigation amount. In the W4 treatment, the total soil desalination rate in the 60 cm soil layer varied from 29.78% to 58.19%. ② Increasing irrigation amount increased groundwater recharge, but reduced groundwater salinity from 6 g/L to 4-5 g/L, benefiting groundwater utilization by the crop. ③ With the increase in irrigation amount, plant height, leaf area index, dry matter accumulation and yield of the cotton increased first followed by a decline. The growth index of cotton under W3 treatment was the best, with a potential yield of 7 127.66 kg/hm2. Water use efficiency decreased with the increase in irrigation amount. 【Conclusion】 The optimal irrigation schedule for cotton under mulched drip irrigation in the studied area is 450 mm. Although its associated water use efficiency is not the highest, it improves ecological environment, meets ecological water consumption and safeguards crop growth.

【Background and Objective】 As renewable energy is expanding, complementary energy storage solutions such as pumped-storage power stations have been developed. By the end of 2020, the total installed capacity of pumped-storage power stations in China had surpassed 30 million kW. Differing from conventional hydropower stations, pumped-storage power stations operate under distinct thermal and dynamic conditions, which can affect the environment as the temperature of water discharged from these reservoirs is closely linked to river ecosystems. Low-temperature discharges not only delay or prevent fish spawning, but also adversely affect crop growth, leading to crop yield reduction. Despite these concerns, research on the change in outflow water temperature of hybrid pumped-storage power stations is limited. This paper is to bridge this knowledge gap. 【Method】 Taking the Jinshuitan Reservoir as an example, we simulate outflow water temperature under different inlet-outlet elevations and pumping rates using used the MIKE3 water temperature model. This allowed us to assess the impact of hybrid pumped-storage hydropower stations on outflow water temperature. 【Result】 Compared to the outflow water temperature without pumping and storage, pumping-storage reduced the outflow water temperature from May to September and increased it during the other month; the maximum decrease and increase in temperature were less than 0.7 ℃ and 0.8 ℃, respectively. Specifically, at a pumping rate of 110 m3/s, raising the outlet elevation from 130 m to 150 m led to the reduction in the outflow water temperature to decrease from 0.4 ℃ to 0.1 ℃ between May and October, and the rise in temperature to decrease from 0.5 ℃ to 0.02 ℃ during the remaining months, compared to conditions without pumping-storage. When the outlet elevation was maintained at 139 m, increasing the pumping rate from 50 m3/s to 70 m3/s only affected decrease in the outflow water temperature between May and September, with the decrease increasing from 0.1 ℃ to 0.2 ℃. Further increases in the pumping rate, while keeping the outlet elevation at 139 m, had no significant impact on the outflow water temperature. 【Conclusion】 The elevation of the inlet and outlet significantly affects the outflow water temperature; a lower elevation results in a greater temperature difference. While the pumping rate does influence the temperature difference, the effect is less pronounced, though the temperature difference does increase with pumping rates. To minimize the adverse impacts of pumped-storage operation on downstream ecosystems, it is advisable to position the inlet and outlet at the highest feasible elevations.

【Objective】 Maize is a main staple crop cultivated in central and Northern China but it requires irrigation at certain stages during its growth. In this paper, we present the findings of an experimental study on the effect of irrigation amount on photosynthesis and dry matter accumulation of the crop during its tasseling-silking stage. 【Method】 The field experiment was conducted in the long-term experiment established in 2018 at the experimental base of the academy of agricultural and animal husbandry sciences of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The experiment compared six irrigation amounts: 315 m3/hm2 (W1), 645 m3/hm2 (W2), 945 m3/hm2 (W3), 1 275 m3/hm2 (W4), and 1 605 m3/hm2 (W5); the control was rain-fed (W0). During the experiment, we measured photosynthetic characteristics and dry matter accumulation of the crop in each treatment. The photosynthetic characteristics and its correlation with dry matter accumulation were calculated by fitting the response curve parameters to a non-right-angle hyperbolic model. 【Result】 The leaf SPAD in W3 was lower only than that in W4 in 2019, but in 2020 it increased by 3.96%, 5.12%, 11.10%, 12.64% and 19.90%, respectively, compared with that in W4, W2, W1, W5 and W0. In 2019 and 2020, the average daily net photosynthetic rate was the highest in W3, while in 2019, the dry weights of stems, leaves and ears in W3 were the second highest among all treatments. In 2020, the physiological indexes of the crop in W3 were higher than that in other treatments. There was no significant difference in leaf photosynthesis between W3, W4 and W5. 【Conclusion】 In central and western regions of Inner Mongolia, when the total rainfall during growing season of maize exceeded 365 mm, irrigating 945 m3/hm2 of water can effectively improve photosynthetic efficiency of the maize during its tasseling-silking stage, promote dry matter accumulation and increase grain yield.
