High soil salinity represents a critical environmental constraint to crop production. In order to ameliorate the effects of salinity, a plethora of molecules have been applied and promising outcomes have been noted. The beneficial effects of chitosan (CTS) and melatonin (Mel) application, separately, have been previously recorded with respect to plant growth and productivity, leading to the hypothesis that their conjugation in the form of chitosan-melatonin nanoparticles (CTS-HPMC-Mel NPs) could lead to further enhanced performance of plants under control and stress conditions. In this regard, novel CTS-HPMC-Mel NPs were synthesized, characterized and then employed as a chemical priming agent in spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) plants 24 h prior to salinity stress imposition. As expected, salt stress negatively affected morphophysiological attributes such as plant height, leaf number, leaf fresh weight, leaf dry weight, photosynthetic pigments, Fv/Fo, and Fv/Fm. On the other hand, stress-related attributes, such as content of proline, MDA and H2O2, as well as activity of APX and GP enzymes were increased in response to salt stress. However, adverse effects of salt stress were ameliorated with Mel and CTS-HPMC-Mel NP treatments by enhancing morphological traits, proline, antioxidant enzymatic activities, as well as content of dominant constituents of essential oil profile. It is worth noting that conjugated form of Mel with chitosan, in comparison with solo treatment of Mel, was more effective in combating stress effects. To our knowledge, this is the first report to demonstrate that engineered CTS-HPMC-Mel NPs could be applied as an innovative protective agent to mitigate the effects of salinity in crop plants.

The highly heterogeneous nature of Botrytis cinerea provides adaptive benefits to variable environmental regimes. Disentangling pathogen population structure in anthropogenic agroecosystems is crucial to designing more effective management schemes. Herein, we studied how evolutionary forces exerted in different farming systems, in terms of agrochemicals-input, shape B. cinerea populations. In total, 360 B. cinerea isolates were collected from conventional and organic, strawberry and tomato farms in Cyprus and Greece. The occurrence and frequency of sensitivities to seven botryticides were estimated. Results highlighted widespread fungicide resistance in conventional farms since only 15.5% of the isolates were sensitive. A considerable frequency of fungicide-resistant isolates was also detected in the organic farms (14.9%). High resistance frequencies were observed for boscalid (67.7%), pyraclostrobin (67.3%), cyprodinil (65.9%), and thiophanate-methyl (61.4%) in conventional farms, while high levels of multiple fungicide resistance were also evident. Furthermore, B. cinerea isolates were genotyped using a set of seven microsatellite markers (simple sequence repeat [SSR] markers). Index of association analyses (Ia and rBarD) suggest asexual reproduction of the populations, even though the mating-type idiomorphs were equally distributed, indicating frequency-dependent selection. Fungicide resistance was correlated with farming systems across countries and crops, while SSRs were able to detect population structure associated with resistance to thiophanate-methyl, pyraclostrobin, boscalid, and cyprodinil. The expected heterozygosity in organic farms was significantly higher than in conventional, suggesting the absence of selective pressure that may change the allelic abundance in organic farms. However, genetic variance among strawberry and tomato populations was high, ranking host specificity higher than other selection forces studied.

Salt stress is of the most detrimental abiotic stress factors on either crop or non-crop species. Of the strategies employed to boost the performance of the plants against harmful impacts of salt stress; application of novel nano-engineered particles have recently gained great attention as a promising tool. Octa-aminopropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes nanoparticles (OA-POSS NPs) were synthesized and then a foliar-application of OA-POSS NPs were carried out on sweet basil plants subjected to the salt stress. In that context, interactive effects of OA-POSS NPs (25, 50 and 100 mg L-1) and salinity stress (50 and 100 mM NaCl) were assayed by estimating a series of agronomic, physiological, biochemical and analytical parameters. OA-POSS NPs decreased the harmful effects of salinity by increasing photosynthetic pigment content, adjusting chlorophyll fluorescence, and triggering non-enzymatic (phenolic content) and enzymatic antioxidant components. The findings suggested that 25 mg L-1 OA-POSS NPs is the optimum concentration for sweet basil grown under salt stress. Considering the essential oil profile, estragole was the predominant compound with a percentage higher than 50% depending on the treatment. In comparison to the control group, 50 mM NaCl did not significantly affect estragole content, whilst 100 mM NaCl caused a substantial increase in estragole content. Regarding OA-POSS NPs treatments, increments by 16.8%, 11.8% and 17.5% were observed following application with 25, 50 and 100 mg L-1, respectively. Taken together, the current study provides evidence that POSS NPs can be employed as novel, 'green' growth promoting agents in combating salt stress in sweet basil.

In this study, we describe the results obtained in a study of the transgenerational phenotypic effects of chromium (Cr) stress on the model plant species Arabidopsis thaliana. The F1 generation derived from parents grown under chronic and medium chronic stress showed significantly higher levels of the maximal effective concentration (EC50) compared with F1 plants generated from unstressed parents. Moreover, F1 plants from Cr-stressed parents showed a higher germination rate when grown in the presence of Cr. F1 plants derived from parents cultivated under chronic Cr stress displayed reduced hydrogen peroxide levels under Cr stress compared to controls. At lower Cr stress levels, F1 plants were observed to activate promptly more genes involved in Cr stress responses than F0 plants, implying a memory effect linked to transgenerational priming. At higher Cr levels, and at later stages, F1 plants modulated significantly fewer genes than F0 plants, implying a memory effect leading to Cr stress adaptation. Several bHLH transcription factors were induced by Cr stress in F1 but not in F0 plants, including bHLH100, ORG2 and ORG3. F1 plants optimized gene expression towards pathways linked to iron starvation response. A model of the transcriptional regulation of transgenerational memory to Cr stress is presented here, and could be applied for other heavy metal stresses.

The consumption of leafy vegetables has been linked with outbreaks of listeriosis and salmonellosis. Hydroponics is a novel soilless cultivation system used for the growth of fresh produce/leafy vegetables that is gaining increased interest nowadays. In this study, lettuce (Lactuca sativa) plants of different ages (young and old plants) were grown in hydroponic solution with four different pH values (5, 6, 7 and 8) and inoculated with two bacterial populations of Salmonella Enteritidis (low: 3 log cfu mL-1 and high: 6 log cfu mL-1). Plants were harvested for old plants: After 13 and 26 days post inoculation (dpi) and for young plants: After 14 dpi and microbiological assessment on plant tissue (leaves, roots), root rinse and hydroponic solution was performed. The results revealed that the pathogen present in high populations was internalized in roots at 26 dpi (at all pH), while the pathogen was found around the roots (root rinse) independently of the pH of the hydroponic solution or the bacterial population. Interestingly, low bacterial internalization frequencies were observed in low pH values (5 and 6) of the hydroponic solution, while no internalization in leaves was noted. Therefore, a suitable management of the nutrient solution can possibly lead to safer leafy vegetable production.

Water of high electrical conductivity (EC) due to high salinity and/or high levels of minerals in hydroponics is of challenge in agriculture for the production of plants, especially the ones that are not meant for human consumption. Ornamental plants are most adversely affected by high salt and ion concentrations as they have a very shallow root system, and thus can uptake larger amounts of minerals. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of high mineral content and salinity when they are introduced into the substrate (perlite) through the nutrient solution (NS), on the growth and development of pansies. Plants of Viola tricolor were cultivated under 8.5 dS m-1 of salinity (in terms of 75 mM NaCl) or electrical conductivity (in terms of concentrated NS of EC 8.5 dS m-1) for 30 days. Growth parameters as plant height, biomass, chlorophyll content and fluorescence, number of flowers, etc. were negatively affected by both high conductivity applications, while nutrient accumulation varied in leaves and flowers of the plants. The concentration of nutrients was determined in a way for the plant to be evaluated as a potential candidate for excess nutrient accumulator.

Besides well-known grapevine trunk disease (GTD)-related pathogens, there is an increased interest in wood-colonizing fungi that infect grapevines. During 2017–2018, a survey was conducted in Cyprus and wood samples were collected from vines exhibiting typical GTD symptoms. Based on morphological and multilocus phylogenetic analyses (ITS, LSU, bt2, tef1-a), four species in the Sporocadaceae family were described and typified; two in the genus of Seimatosporium: Seim. cyprium sp. nov. and Seim. vitis-viniferae and two in Sporocadus: Spo. kurdistanicus and Spo. rosigena. The teleomorph of Seim. cyprium sp. nov. was also described. Pathogenicity trials with representative isolates of each species were performed on woody stems of two-year-old potted grapevines for 12 months under field conditions. All isolates were pathogenic, causing dark brown to black vascular discoloration, extending upward and downward from the inoculation point. Sporocadus isolates were significantly more aggressive than Seimatosporium with lesion lengths ranging from 9.24 to 6.90 and 4.13 to 4.00 cm, respectively. Successful re-isolations were also evident for all species and isolates. Seim. cyprium sp. nov. is a newly described species, while Spo. kurdistanicus and Spo. rosigena are reported for the first time in Europe on Vitis vinifera, suggesting the potential role of Sporocadaceae in the GTDs complex.

Water stress may greatly limit plant functionality and growth. Stomatal closure and consequently reduced transpiration are considered as early and sensitive plant responses to drought and salinity stress. An important consequence of stomatal closure under water stress is the rise of leaf temperature (Tleaf ), yet Tleaf is not only fluctuating with stomatal closure. It is regulated by several plant parameters and environmental factors. Thermal imaging and different stress indices, incorporating actual leaf/crop temperature and reference temperatures, were developed in previous studies toward normalizing for effects unassociated to water stress on Tleaf , aiming at a more efficient water stress assessment. The concept of stress indices has not been extensively studied on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the different indices employed in previous studies in assessing rosette transpiration rate (E) in Arabidopsis plants grown under two different light environments and subjected to salinity. After salinity imposition, E was gravimetrically quantified, and thermal imaging was employed to quantify rosette (Trosette ) and artificial reference temperature (Twet, Tdry ). Trosette and several water stress indices were tested for their relation to E. Among the microclimatic growth conditions tested, RWSI1 ([Trosette - Twet ]/[Tdry - Twet ]) and RWSI2 ([Tdry - Trosette ]/[Tdry - Twet ]) were well linearly-related to E, irrespective of the light environment, while the sole use of either Twet or Tdry in different combinations with Trosette returned less accurate results. This study provides evidence that selected combinations of Trosette , Tdry , and Twet can be utilized to assess E under water stress irrespective of the light environment.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the biphasic phenomenon of hormesis may provide the means for ensuring agricultural sustainability in changing climate scenarios. The adaptive responses induced in plants exposed to hormetic, low doses of various stressors can result in enhanced tolerance upon their subsequent exposure to adverse environmental stimuli. Hormesis-based priming is highly generalizable, as it can be induced by a series of effectors applied at different growth stages in a plethora of plant species. This review aims at highlighting the most promising hormesis-based priming approaches, based on natural as well as artificial environmental factors, including chemicals, radiation, and nanomaterials. Furthermore, we discuss research gaps, future perspectives and recommended actions for reaching specific milestones in the roadmap for achieving the target of commercializing the benefits of this platform, in order to secure agricultural sustainability.

Background Melatonin is a multi-functional molecule widely employed in order to mitigate abiotic stress factors, in general and salt stress in particular. Even though previous reports revealed that melatonin could exhibit roles in promoting seed germination and protecting plants during various developmental stages of several plant species under salt stress, no reports are available with respect to the regulatory acts of melatonin on the physiological and biochemical status as well as the expression levels of defense- and secondary metabolism-related related transcripts in bitter melon subjected to the salt stress. Results Herewith the present study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the physiological and ion balance, antioxidant system, as well as transcript analysis of defense-related genes (WRKY1, SOS1, PM H+-ATPase, SKOR, Mc5PTase7, and SOAR1) and secondary metabolism-related gene expression (MAP30, α-MMC, polypeptide-P, and PAL) in salt-stressed bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) plants in response to melatonin treatment. In this regard, different levels of melatonin (0, 75 and 150 µM) were applied to mitigate salinity stress (0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl) in bitter melon. Accordingly, present findings revealed that 100 mM salinity stress decreased growth and photosynthesis parameters (SPAD, Fv/Fo, Y(II)), RWC, and some nutrient elements (K+, Ca2+, and P), while it increased Y(NO), Y(NPQ), proline, Na+, Cl−, H2O2, MDA, antioxidant enzyme activity, and lead to the induction of the examined genes. However, prsiming with 150 µM melatonin increased SPAD, Fv/Fo, Y(II)), RWC, and K+, Ca2+, and P concentration while decreased Y(NO), Y(NPQ), Na+, Cl−, H2O2, and MDA under salt stress. In addition, the antioxidant system and gene expression levels were increased by melatonin (150 µM). Conclusions Overall, it can be postulated that the application of melatonin (150 µM) has effective roles in alleviating the adverse impacts of salinity through critical modifications in plant metabolism.

Salinity is one of the predominant abiotic stress factors that influence the growth and productivity of plants. Salinity adversely impacts the growth responses via ionic toxicity, osmotic stress, impaired nutrients uptake, hormonal disparity, and the over-production of reactive oxygen species. To study the effects of salinity stress (0, 50, 100, and 150 mM) and foliar treatments (dH2O, 2 g L−1 Dobogen biostimulant, 2 g L−1 KNO3, and 2 g L−1d-glucose) on the growth and physiological responses of Tanacetum balsamita, a factorial experiment was conducted based on the completely randomized design at the research greenhouse of Azarbaijan Shahid Madani University, Iran. The results showed the significant interaction effects of salinity and foliar sprays on chlorophyll a, K+, Na+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, and Si content, K/Na ratio, and total phenolics and flavonoids content. The highest phenolic content was acquired with 100 mM salinity and foliar spray of Dobogen and glucose, 50 mM NaCl × KNO3 application, and 50 mM salinity × no-foliar application. The highest K/Na ratio was observed in control plants and controls × KNO3 and/or Dobogen application. The greatest Si content was recorded with no-salinity × Dobogen and KNO3 applications and no-saline × no-foliar (control) plants. The independent effects of treatments influenced malondialdehyde, flavonoids, proline contents, and catalase activity. Chlorophyll b and superoxide dismutase were affected by the salinity. Total soluble solids and Ca2+ content were responsive to the foliar applications. Malondialdehyde and proline content was the highest at 150 mM salinity. Salinity adversely affected the physiological responses of costmary. However, foliar treatments partially ameliorated the salinity effect, and the results with more detailed studies would be advisable to the extension section and pioneer farmers.

Non-bovine milk cheeses, although mainly produced in the Mediterranean basin, are widely accepted and enjoyed worldwide. This chapter discusses the importance of non-bovine milk cheeses for local economies, cultural heritage and the role in preserving biodiversity. The special characteristics, composition, as well important parameters, such as animal feeding regimes/farming systems, and cheese-making technologies are presented. The diversity is clearly reflected in the organoleptic profile of every cheese in the relevant category i.e., soft, semi-hard, hard, mold surface-ripened, blue pasta-filata, blue-veined, whey or white-brined, making non-bovine milk cheeses unique.

Carotenoids are isoprenoids widely distributed in foods that have been always part of the diet of humans. Unlike the other so-called food bioactives, some carotenoids can be converted into retinoids exhibiting vitamin A activity, which is essential for humans. Furthermore, they are much more versatile as they are relevant in foods not only as sources of vitamin A, but also as natural pigments, antioxidants, and health-promoting compounds. Lately, they are also attracting interest in the context of nutricosmetics, as they have been shown to provide cosmetic benefits when ingested in appropriate amounts. In this work, resulting from the collaborative work of participants of the COST Action European network to advance carotenoid research and applications in agro-food and health (EUROCAROTEN, www.eurocaroten.eu, https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA15136/#tabs|Name:overview) research on carotenoids in foods and feeds is thoroughly reviewed covering aspects such as analysis, carotenoid food sources, carotenoid databases, effect of processing and storage conditions, new trends in carotenoid extraction, daily intakes, use as human, and feed additives are addressed. Furthermore, classical and recent patents regarding the obtaining and formulation of carotenoids for several purposes are pinpointed and briefly discussed. Consumers seek safe, high-nutritional-value products, and therefore maintaining fresh produce quality is a fundamental goal in the food industry. In an effort to eliminate chemical-based sanitizing agents, there has been a shift in recent decades toward the usage of eco-friendly, natural solutions (e.g., essential oils-EOs). In the present study, tomato fruits (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Dafni) at breaker and red ripening stage were exposed to sage essential oils (EO: 50 μL L−1 or 500 μL L−1) for 2, 7 and 14 days, at 11 °C and 90% relative humidity (RH). Quality-related attributes were examined during (sustain effect—SE) and following (vapour-induced memory effect—ME; seven days vapours + seven days storage) vapour treatment. In breaker tomatoes, EO-enrichment (sustained effect) retained fruit firmness, respiration rates, and ethylene emission in low EO levels (50 μL L−1). In contrast, breaker fruit metabolism sped up in high EO levels of 500 μL L−1, with decreased firmness, increased rates of respiration and ethylene, and effects on antioxidant metabolism. The effects were more pronounced during the storage period of 14 days, comparing to the fruit exposed to common storage-transit practice. In red fruits, the EOs impacts were evidenced earlier (at two and seven days of storage) with increased rates of respiration and ethylene, increased β-carotene, and decreased lycopene content. In both breaker and red ripening fruit, EO application decreased weight losses. Considering the fruits pre-exposed to EOs, quality attributes were more affected in green fruits and affected to a lesser level in the red ones. Furthermore, based on appearance, color, and texture evaluations, organoleptic trials demonstrated an overwhelming preference for EO-treated red fruit during choice tests. EOs had lower effects on total phenolics, acidity, total soluble solids, and fruit chroma, with no specific trend for both breaker and red tomatoes. Natural volatiles may aid to retain fruit quality in parallel with their antimicrobial protection offered during storage and transportation of fresh produce. These effects may persist after the EO is removed from the storage conditions.

Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl) tree has a unique annual cycle that allows it to satisfactorily adapt in the Mediterranean basin but also in other subtropical climates. Over the recent years, the commercial production of loquat fruit has received increased interest and it has risen to a niche product that is greatly appreciated by the consumers. Accordingly, a considerable number of studies have been conducted in this crop over the last years. Depending on the cultivar and specific weather conditions, loquat fruit may suffer from purple spot. This physiological disorder affects the skin of the fruit prior to harvest, leading to skin discoloration with depressed purple surface. This physiological disorder has been poorly analyzed and it appears to be caused by a combination of the genotype considered, ripening stage, climatic conditions and the cultivation practices applied. Despite its economic impact, a limited number of information is available regarding the etiology and the practices for controlling it. This study provides an overview of the etiology, possible causes and mitigation measures to reduce the incidence and severity of such symptoms.

Nowadays, increase fruit losses are being reported due to the development of fungal postharvest diseases. In an attempt to reduce the use of synthetic fungicides, a turn towards natural products such as essential oils (EOs) and natural compounds has been made. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of eucalyptus (Euc), rosemary (Ros) EO, their mixture (50:50 v/v) and their common main component (i.e., eucalyptol) on the quality parameters, fruit response and inhibition of blue rot (Penicillium expansum) in apple and pear fruits during their shelf life. The results of the present study revealed that fungal colony growth decreased in vitro with exposure at eucalyptus EO (Euc-300 μL/L), rosemary EO (Ros-300 μL/L) and their mixture (Euc + Ros 100 and 300 μL/L). The exposure at Ros-100 μL/L stimulated spore production, whilst Euc + Ros (100 and 300 μL/L) and eucalyptol (100 and 300 μL/L) decreased spore germination. Moreover, the in vivo applied treatments resulted in decreased lesion growth of P. expansum in apple and pear fruits. Respiration rate increased with the application of Euc + Ros at 300 μL/L and eucalyptus EO (Euc-100 μL/L and Euc-300 μL/L) for both assessed fruits. On the other hand, no significant differences were reported on apples and pears total soluble solids and acidity values. The application of Euc + Ros-300 μL/L in apples increased hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels, whilst Euc-100 and Euc-300 μL/L increased lipid peroxidation levels. Regarding pear fruits, exposure to Euc-100 μL/L and Ros-100 μL/L resulted in increased H2O2 whereas, Euc-100 μL/L, Ros- (100 and 300 μL/L) and eucalyptol (100 and 300 μL/L) also increased lipid peroxidation. The findings of this study indicate that the investigated natural products can be explored for the preservation of fresh apples and pears, as alternative natural fungicides with consideration of the fresh produce quality attributes.

Plants develop a plethora of defense strategies during their acclimation and interactions with various environmental stresses. Secondary metabolites play a pivotal role in the processes during stress acclimation, therefore deciphering their relevant responses exchange the interpretation of the underlying molecular mechanisms that may contribute to improved adaptability and efficacy. In the current study, tomato plants were exposed to short-term cold stress (5 °C for 16 h) or inoculated (20 d) with either Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) or Potato Virus Y (PVY). Responses were recorded via the assessments of leaf total phenolic (TP) content, total flavonoid (TF) levels, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) enzyme activity. The transcription of the gene families regulating the core phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway (PBP) at an early (PAL, cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase, 4-coumarate-CoA ligase) or late (chalcone synthase and flavonol synthase) stage was also evaluated. The results showed that cold stress stimulated an increase in TP and TF contents, while PAL enzyme activity was also elevated compared to viral infection. Besides genes transcription of the enzymes involved in the core PBP was mostly induced by cold stress, whereas transcription of the genes regulating flavonoid biosynthesis was mainly triggered by viral infection. In conclusion, abiotic and biotic stressors induced differential regulation of the core PBP and flavonoid biosynthetic metabolism. Taking the above into consideration, our results highlight the complexity of tomato responses to diverse stimuli allowing for better elucidation of stress tolerance mechanisms at this crop.

Under the era of climate change, plants are forced to survive under increasingly adverse conditions. Application of biostimulants in plants is shown to mitigate the deleterious effects of abiotic stresses including salinity, enhancing plant tolerance and performance. The present study focuses on the effects of five biostimulants based on biocompost and biofertilizer compounds that have been applied to tomato plants grown in the presence (salt-stressed plants) or absence of salt stress (control plants). To study the beneficial effects of the biostimulants in tomato plants, a series of analyses were performed, including phenotypic and agronomic observations, physiological, biochemical and enzymatic activity measurements, as well as gene expression analysis (RT-qPCR) including genes involved in antioxidant defense (SlCu/ZnSOD, SlFeSOD, SlCAT1, SlcAPX), nitrogen (SlNR, SlNiR, SlGTS1) and proline metabolism (p5CS), potassium transporters (HKT1.1, HKT1.2), and stress-inducible TFs (SlWRKY8, SlWRKY31). Among all the biostimulant solutions applied to the plants, the composition of 70% biofertilizer and 30% biocompost (Bf70/Bc30) as well as 70% biocompost and 30% biofertilizer (Bc70/Bf30) formulations garnered interest, since the former showed growth promoting features while the latter displayed better defense responses at the time of harvesting compared with the other treatments and controls. Taken together, current findings provide new insight into the beneficial effects of biostimulants, encouraging future field studies to further evaluate the biostimulant effects in plants under a real environment which is compromised by a combination of abiotic and biotic stresses.

Among minimally processed vegetables, shredded carrots are particularly popular; however, they are perishable products and can be contaminated throughout the food chain. Chlorine, the most commonly used disinfectant agent in the washing water, fails to reduce the microbial load of fresh produce and furthermore it can adversely affect human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of different washing treatments with aqueous solutions of mint essential oil (EO) (1:1000) and mint hydrosol (1:10) and pomegranate juice (1:10) against two major food borne pathogens on shredded carrots as well as their effect on carrot’s quality. The results of this study indicate that the tested washing treatments resulted in a small but significant decrease of the microbial load of Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes on the sixth day of storage. Pomegranate juice and mint hydrosol were more effective against L. monocytogenes, whereas mint EO was more effective against E. coli. Furthermore, an increase in carrot’s total phenolics and antioxidants was observed with the application of mint hydrosol and pomegranate juice, whereas mint EO resulted in a decrease on the sixth day of storage. Additionally, a decreased chroma and an increased whiteness index of the shredded carrots were observed during the application of mint hydrosol on the sixth day. Total carotenoids, ascorbic acid, total soluble solids and tritratable acidity were not differ after six days of storage of shredded carrots. Additional efforts are necessary to evaluate and optimize this process.

Worldwide, significant postharvest losses of fruit and vegetables due to attack by microorganisms is evidence, while chemical applications is of great consumer concerns regarding food safety. Alternative sanitizers are explored, with natural compounds such as essential oils (EOs) to achieve scientific and consumer's interest for the preservation of fresh produce. In the present study, the efficacy of dittany (Origanum dictamnus L.) essential oil for the control of Botrytis cinerea, a common postharvest pathogen of three economically important vegetables, tomato, pepper and eggplant was examined. Pathogen development (vegetative or reproductive phase) in culture medium or in fruits was evaluated after treatment with dittany EO (0, 50, 100, 250 μL L-1) in vitro and in situ when stored at 12°C and 95% RH during or following exposure to EO volatiles. In vitro, fungal development was completely inhibited by the application of 100 or 250 μL L-1 of EO volatiles. In inoculated fruits, the application of 50 μL L-1 EO resulted in suppressed disease development by reduced lesion growth and fungal sporulation, where increasing EO concentration led to greater effects. Pre-exposure of the three fruits to volatiles, before fungal inoculation, revealed reduced lesion growth, indicating that dittany EO probably caused induced resistance of fruits against the pathogen. Moreover, EO application did not affect quality-related characteristics of fruits in general, while skin lightness and pulp lightness of eggplant fruits were improved under the presence of dittany EO volatiles. Overall, the results suggest that dittany EO volatiles may be considered as an alternative food preservative treatment, significantly reducing or eliminating B. cinerea infection during fruit storage.

The interest in the use of mixtures of inorganic and organic materials as substrate media in soilless culture in greenhouses is increasing in parts of the world where the mixtures have not been used in common practice. Material efficacy can affect the plant yield, water and fertilizer use efficiency, energy consumption, and final cost for the production of 1 kg of produce. In this study, tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum 'Belladona') were grown over five months in a closed soilless culture system on seven different substrates (perlite or pumice and their mixtures with 25 or 50% shredded maize stems) in an unheated greenhouse. Life cycle assessment was applied to assess the impact of the production system on the environment. As key performance indicators, the carbon footprint, the water footprint and energy efficiency were determined for the seven different substrates. The system boundaries were from cradle to farm gate. Comparisons of the indicators to greenhouse and field tomato production were made as well as suggestions to mitigate the impact of this production method on the environment.

Novel vitamin E chelate siderophore derivatives and their VV and FeIII complexes have been synthesised and the chemical and biological properties have been evaluated. In particular, the α- and δ-tocopherol derivatives with bis-methyldroxylamino triazine (α-tocTHMA) and (δ-tocDPA) as well their VV complexes, [V2VO3(α-tocTHMA)2] and [V2IVO3(δ-tocTHMA)2], have been synthesised and characterised by infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and ultra violet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopies. The dimeric vanadium complexes in solution are in equilibrium with their respefrctive monomers, H2O + [V2VO2(μ-O)]4+ = 2 [VVO(OH)]2+. The two amphiphilic vanadium complexes exhibit enhanced hydrolytic stability. EPR shows that the complexes in lipophilic matrix are mild radical initiators. Evaluation of their biological activity shows that the compounds do not exhibit any significant cytotoxicity to cells.

High levels of soil salinity can cause substantial decline in growth and productivity of crops worldwide, thus representing a major threat to global agriculture. In recent years, engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have been deemed as a promising alternative in combating abiotic stress factors, such as salinity. In this context, the present study was designed to explore the potential of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) in alleviating salt stress in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Flame Seedless) cuttings. Specifically, the interaction between CeO2 NPs (25, 50 and 100 mg L−1) and salinity (25 and 75 mM NaCl) was evaluated by assaying an array of agronomic, physiological, analytical and biochemical parameters. Treatments with CeO2 NPs, in general, alleviated the adverse impacts of salt stress (75 mM NaCl) significantly improving relevant agronomic traits of grapevine. CeO2 NPs significantly ameliorated chlorophyll damage under high levels of salinity. Furthermore, the presence of CeO2 NPs attenuated salinity-induced damages in grapevine as indicated by lower levels of proline, MDA and EL; however, H2O2 content was not ameliorated by the presence of CeO2 NPs under salt stress. Additionally, salinity caused substantial increases in enzymatic activities of GP, APX and SOD, compared with control plants. Similar to stress conditions, all concentrations of CeO2 NPs triggered APX activity, while the highest concentration of CeO2 NPs significantly increased GP activity. However, CeO2 NPs did not significantly modify SOD activity. Considering mineral nutrient profile, salinity increased Na and Cl content as well as Na/K ratio, while it decreased K, P and Ca contents. Nevertheless, the presence of CeO2 NPs did not lead to significant alterations in Na, K and P content of salt-stressed plants. Taken together, current findings suggest that CeO2 NPs could be employed as promising salt-stress alleviating agents in grapevine.

Peach (Prunus persica) fruit is widely consumed, both as fresh or as processed (mostly by canning) product. Despite its economic importance, a limited number of studies have dealt with quality assessment of clingstone peach cultivars after thermal processing. Thus, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of canning process on compositional, sensorial and textural attributes of fruit from seven non-melting peach cultivars which exhibit on-tree ripening in succession, spanning from July till mid-September in the northern hemisphere. Descriptive quantitative analysis indicated discrete varietal differences, providing useful insights for the industry regarding the quality and marketing potential for canned products of each cultivar. Fruit packed in diluted-clarified grape juice concentrate, aiming towards a less caloric content product, demonstrated an inferior consumer perception regarding bitterness, astringency and off-taste. Storage of the canned fruit (6 versus 24 months) led to texture depletion modifications on a cultivar-dependent manner. ‘Ferlate®’ registered desirable textural properties, while ‘Mirel®’, besides the appealing orange-coloured fruit pieces, aligned with satisfactory sensorial properties, provide further marketing options for the peach canning industry. Both early (‘Romea’) and late-season ripening (‘VLG’) cultivars were proven amenable to canning with acceptable quality attributes, offering a sustainable solution towards extension of the non-melting peach harvesting season.

Salinity has destructive impacts in plant production; therefore, application of new approaches such as nanotechnology and plant priming is attracting increasing attention as an innovative means to ameliorate salt stress effects. Considering the unique properties and recorded beneficial influence of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and proline in plant growth and physiological parameters when applied individually, their conjugation in the form of carbon quantum dot nanoparticles functionalized by proline (Pro-CQDs NPs) could lead to synergistic effects. Accordingly, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of this advanced nanomaterial (Pro-CQDs NPs) as a chemical priming agent, in grapevine plants cv. 'Rasha'. For this purpose, proline, CQDs, and Pro-CQDs NPs at three concentrations (0, 50, and 100 mg L-1) were applied exogenously 48 h prior to salinity stress (0 and 100 mM NaCl) that was imposed for a month. Three days after imposing salt stress, an array of biochemical measurements was recorded, while agronomic and some physiological parameters were noted at the end of the stress period. Results revealed that proline treatment at both concentrations, as well as CQDs and Pro-CQDs NPs at low concentration, positively affected grapevine plants under both non-stress and stress conditions. Specifically, the application of proline at 100 mg L-1 and Pro-CQDs NPs at 50 mg L-1 resulted in optimal performance identifying 50 mg L-1 Pro-CQDs NPs as the optimal treatment. Proline treatment at 100 mg L-1 increased leaf fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW); chl a, b, and proline content; SOD activity under both non-stress and stress conditions; Y (II) under salinity and carotenoid content; and CAT activity under control conditions. Pro-CQDs NP treatment at 50 mg L-1 enhanced total phenol, anthocyanin, and Fv/Fo, as well as APX and GP activities under both conditions, while increasing carotenoid, Y (II), Fv/Fo, and CAT activity under salinity. Furthermore, it decreased MDA and H2O2 contents at both conditions and EL and Y (NO) under salt stress. Overall, conjugation of CQDs with proline at 50 mg L-1 resulted in further improving the protective effect of proline application at 100 mg L-1. Therefore, functionalization of NPs with chemical priming agents appears to be an effective means of optimizing plant-priming approaches towards efficient amelioration of abiotic stress-related damage in plants.

Heavy metal contamination is a major health issue concerning the commercial production of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) that are used for the extraction of bioactive molecules. Copper (Cu) is an anthropogenic contaminant that, at toxic levels, can accumulate in plant tissues, affecting plant growth and development. On the other hand, plant response to metal-induced stress may involve the synthesis and accumulation of beneficial secondary metabolites. In this study, hydroponically grown Pelargonium graveolens plants were exposed to different Cu concentrations in a nutrient solution (4, 25, 50, 100 μM) to evaluate the effects Cu toxicity on plant growth, mineral uptake and distribution in plants, some stress indicators, and the accumulation of bioactive secondary metabolites in leaf tissues. P. graveolens resulted in moderately tolerant Cu toxicity. At Cu concentrations up to 100 μM, biomass production was preserved and was accompanied by an increase in phenolics and antioxidant capacity. The metal contaminant was accumulated mainly in the roots. The leaf tissues of Cu-treated P. graveolens may be safely used for the extraction of bioactive molecules.

Epidemiological studies performed during the second half of the previous century have correlated the diet that prevailed in the north shores of the Mediterranean basin with beneficial health effects, including reduced mortality risk and lower incidences of cardiovascular diseases [...]

Plants that become invasive outside their native range often benefit from the absence of their native-range herbivores. Ficus microcarpa is a widely-planted Asian–Australasian species of fig tree that has become invasive in parts of its introduced range. As in most places where it is planted, the pollinator of F. microcarpa has been introduced to Cyprus, together with at least six other Asian fig wasp species. We recorded the other insects feeding on the leaves, buds and stems of this fig tree in southern Cyprus. Eight sap-sucking insects were recorded, and one leaf-galling species, with some present at high frequencies and densities. The insects were a mix of introduced polyphagous species and introduced F. microcarpa specialists. They included the first European record of the fig leaf galling psyllid Trioza brevigenae, which was described from India. Ficus microcarpa has not escaped from its native-range phytophages, but they appear to be free of their own specialist parasitoids and predators. The result is a herbivore load than may be comparable with what the plant experiences in its countries of origin. This is likely to reduce the invasiveness of F. microcarpa, but at the same time makes the plant a less attractive option for future planting.

Background Using water with high salinity for plant fertigation may have detrimental effects on plant development and total yield and on the quality of the crop produced. As a possible means to alleviate the negative effects of salinity, silicon (Si) can be incorporated in the nutrient solution supplied to plants. In the present study, hydroponically grown tomato (Solanum lycopersicum Mill.) plants were subjected to two different salinity levels (0 and 50 mmol L-1 NaCl) with and without the application of Si (0 and 2 mmol L-1 K2 SiO3 ) in order to evaluate its possible positive impact on mitigation of salinity stress-induced symptoms. An additional experiment was implemented with postharvest Si application (sodium silicate) to investigate effects on the shelf-life of tomato fruit. Results Salinity (50 mmol L-1 NaCl) decreased plant size, total yield and fresh fruit weight while a high percentage of blossom end rot symptoms of tomato fruit was also observed. The application of Si in the nutrient solution counteracted these detrimental effects, generating a higher yield and healthier fruit (lower blossom end rot incidence) compared to the untreated plants (no application of Si). Salinity improved several quality-related traits in tomato fruit, resulting in higher marketability, whereas the addition of Si (pre- and postharvest) maintained fruit firmness following storage thereby increasing the shelf-life of tomato fruit. Conclusions These findings indicate that Si application (pre- and postharvest) could provide an effective means of alleviating the unfavorable effects of using low-quality water in plant fertigation on tomato plant development, fruit yield and post-harvest quality, through increased fruit firmness. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Transgenerationally acquired information equips offspring with tools essential for enhancing their physiological functioning, reproduction, survival, and tolerance to a plethora of environmental stressors. To provide a perspective for a better understanding of the effects of contaminants, organismal stress biology, and their implications to environmental and agricultural health, this report presents an overview of evidence of transgenerational hormesis induced by various environmental stressors in animals, plants, and microbes. Transgenerational effects of stress are analyzed within a dose-response framework, dissecting subNOAEL (no-observed-adverse-effect-level) effects from sublethal, superNOAEL effects. SubNOAEL effects can lead to beneficial effects in both parents and offspring. Conversely, in the case of sublethal, superNOAEL stress, parents may sacrifice their own health and survival for the benefit of offspring and their species. In this case, offspring often exhibit enhanced growth, reproduction, survival, and tolerance to stress; however, important risks exist, with effects alternating between inhibition and stimulation across generations. Results are discussed within a mechanistic framework.

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) play an essential role in global health systems, since more than 80% of population use natural products in primary healthcare. Given that the global use of herbal medicines is exponentially increasing, as well as many MAPs products are introduced into the market, many cultivation practices are applied to produce high quality and standardized plant raw materials. Thus, the present study focuses on the chemical fingerprints of two cultivated Sideritis species. In Cyprus, Sideritis cypria Post and S. perfoliata L. subsp. perfoliata are widely used in traditional medicine. To date, there is no research work presenting the comparative chemical profiling between the aforesaid species using NMR methods. In this study, 1D and 2D NMR experiments were used to compare the chemical fingerprints of these species originated from conventional cultivation practices. Iridoids (ajugol, monomelittoside, and melittoside) and one flavone (4′-methyl-isoscutellarein 7-O-[6‴-O-acetyl]-β-D-allosyl(1→2)glucoside) were present in the infusion of S. perfoliata subsp. perfoliata. The phenylethanoid glycoside, acteoside, was detected in both samples. The phytochemical profiles of these cultivated species were similar to those of Sideritis species, indicating the positive impact of cultivation practices in MAPs.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is considered one of the most valuable and versatile vegetable crops globally and also serves as a significant model species for fruit developmental biology. Despite its significance, a severe genetic bottleneck and intense selection of genotypes with specific qualitative traits have resulted in the prevalence of a restricted number of (geno)types, also causing a lack of diversity across widespread cultivated types. As a result, the re-emergence of landraces as well as traditional and heirloom varieties is largely acknowledged as a countermeasure to restore phenotypic, phytochemical and genetic diversity while enriching the aroma/taste tomato palette. On those grounds, the Cypriot tomato germplasm was assessed and characterized. Ten landrace accessions were evaluated under greenhouse conditions and data were collected for 24 IPGRI discrete phenotypic traits. Grouping of accessions largely reflected the fruit shape and size, four different fruit types were recorded across accessions (flattened, heart-shaped, rounded and highly rounded). Moreover, a single run panel consisting of ten SSRs was developed and applied in order to genetically characterize 190 Cypriot genotypes and foreign heirloom varieties. Based on genetic indexes it was established that tomato landraces have a rather low level of heterogeneity and genetic variation. Finally, mineral and phytochemical analyses were conducted in order to estimate biochemical attributes (total phenolics, ascorbic acid, lycopene, β-carotene, total soluble content, titratable acidity) across genotypes, thus, ascertaining that the Cypriot panel has a high nutritional value. Due to the thermo-drought adaptation and tolerance of these genotypes, the current study serves as a roadmap for future breeding efforts in order to incorporate desirable traits or develop novel tomato lines combining resilience and alimentary value.

Melatonin is produced by plants, algae, and animals. Worldwide studies show diverse positive effects of exogenous melatonin on plants, edible plant products, and algae, but the potential of melatonin to enhance food and feed systems through these positive effects remains largely unexplored. Through a meta-analysis of about 25,000 observations, we show for the first time that exogenous application of melatonin significantly increases crop productivity and yields, and enhances the nutritional and nutraceutical value of edible plant products and algae by regulating diverse biological functions. We demonstrate that melatonin can improve plants, edible plant products, and algae under various current climate change scenarios, environmental pollution factors, and other stresses by about 7% to nearly 30%, on average, depending on the stressor. We also analyze various technical/methodological factors influencing the desired outcomes and identify conditions that offer optimal enhancement. We show that the positive effect of melatonin on plants and edible plant products varies among species, genera, and families, and strongly depends on the concentration of melatonin and treatment duration. The effect of melatonin is slightly lower on the monocot clade Commelinids than on the eudicot clades Asterids and Rosids. We also show that its stimulatory effect on plants depends on cultivation system, with a larger effect obtained in hydroponic systems. However, it does not depend on application stage (seed or vegetative), application route (foliage, roots, or seed), and whether the cultivation system is ex vivo or in vivo. This is the first meta-analysis examining the effects of melatonin on plants, edible plant products, and algae, and offers a scientific and technical roadmap facilitating sustainable food and feed production through the application of exogenous melatonin.

Lycopene is a naturally occurring chemical compound that gives fruits and vegetables a red/orange color. As an intermediate metabolite of β-carotene biosynthesis, lycopene represents one of the major carotenoids. This work studies the gene expression pattern of lycopene biosynthesis/catabolism transcripts and the accumulation pattern of lycopene/β-carotene/chlorophyll contents at three developmental stages and three tissues in five widely consumed, commercial tomato cultivars (cvs. ‘Cherry Ninolino F1’, ‘Elpida F1’, ‘Daphne F1’, ‘Eliseo Plum F1’, and ‘Oxheart’). These contents were correlated with in vitro antioxidant activity. Higher levels of lycopene were observed in the peel than other tissues and in the fully ripe stage, with ‘Oxheart’ displaying the highest content. Differential regulation of lycopene biosynthetic genes (SlZDS and SlCRTISO) was demonstrated in all cultivars. Interestingly, a gene implicated in lycopene catabolism (SlLCYB) demonstrated a general induction in the tested tissues. High lycopene content correlates with significant induction of both SlZDS and SlCRTISO in ‘Oxheart’. Significantly increased antioxidant activity was observed in the peel of ‘Cherry Ninolino F1’ and ‘Elpida F1’ cultivars compared with other tested tissues across all cultivars. The exploration of lycopene activity in different cultivars and the consumption of ripe tomatoes including the peel could be useful for the protection of human health.

Polyamines are actively involved in diverse processes, including fruit ripening and stress responses. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of storage temperature on polyamine metabolism of tomato fruit, which were either harvested at the turning stage or left to mature on-plant. The applied temperatures (5, 10 and 25 °C) and storage duration (7 d) are regularly employed in real-world scenarios. The metabolic profile of polyamines (putrescine, spermidine and spermine), gene transcription of the enzymes mediating polyamine biosynthesis and catabolism, protein accumulation of the putrescine synthesis enzyme and the putrescine-produced H2O2 were evaluated. Putrescine was the major polyamine in all cases, and its content generally increased during ripening, as well as in chilled fruit (stored at 5 °C). Increases in arginine decarboxylase protein content and in arginine decarboxylase transcription of both attached fruit and detached ones stored at either 10 or 25 °C showed that putrescine accumulation was mainly driven via the arginine decarboxylase biosynthetic pathway. Interestingly, putrescine catabolism by copper-containing amine oxidase was favored in parallel with increases in arginine decarboxylase and ornithine decarboxylase transcripts in fruit stored at 5 °C. However, the arginine decarboxylase protein accumulation suggests that ornithine decarboxylase is mainly responsible for putrescine accumulation at 5 °C. This study indicates that storage temperature modifies the homeostasis of polyamines in tomato fruit, which in turn orchestrates ripening-associated physiological processes.

Background Salinity is an important global problem with destructive impacts on plants leading to different biochemical and metabolic changes in plants through induced oxidative stress that disturbs metabolism, growth, performance and productivity of plants. Given that putrescine (Put) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs), individually, have promising effects in different plant processes, the idea of their combination in a nano-structure “Put-CQD” lead to its synthesis to evaluate the potential exertion of synergistic effects. The current study aimed to investigate the application of newly-synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of CQDs and Put in grapevine (Vitis vinifera cv. ‘Sultana’) under salinity stress conditions. For this purpose, Put, CQDs and Put-CQD NPs at 5 and 10 mg L− 1 concentrations were applied as chemical priming agents in ‘Sultana’ grapevine 48 h prior salinity stress imposition (0 and 100 mM NaCl). Results Salinity significantly decreased (P ≤ 0.05) morphological parameters, photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and membrane stability index. In addition, salinity enhanced MDA, H2O2, proline content and antioxidant enzyme activity. Results revealed that Put-CQD NPs, particularly at 10 mg L− 1 concentration, alleviated the destructive impacts of salinity stress by improving leaf fresh and dry weights, K+ content, photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence and SPAD parameters, proline content, total phenolics and antioxidant enzymatic activities (CAT, APX, GP and SOD), while decreasing Na+ content, EL, MDA and H2O2 levels. Conclusion To conclude, Put-CQD NPs represent an innovative priming treatment that could be effectively applied on grapevine to improve plant performance under salinity stress conditions.

Abiotic factors in nutrient solutions (NSs), such as salinity and high electrical conductivity (EC), may adversely alter plant growth and crop performance. However, there are medicinal/aromatic plants which can not only withstand these adverse conditions, but which can also increase their productivity or even enhance their quality in such conditions. As fresh water sources suitable for irrigation are becoming more and more limited, the use of low-quality water sources and hydroponic growing systems have been suggested as the main alternatives. Towards that direction, this study aims to evaluate the effect of high EC levels in NSs on geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L’Hér.) and common verbena (Verbena officinallis L.) plants cultivated in a soilless (perlite) hydroponics system. Plants were irrigated with a full nutrient solution of EC 2.1 dS m−1 and pH 5.8 until they reached a uniform size. Then, three treatments were applied, namely: (a) a control treatment with an EC of 2.1 dS m−1 in the NS, (b) a high-salinity NS created by adding 75 mM of NaCl (EC under 8.5 dS m−1) and (c) a concentrated NS with an EC of 8.5 dS m−1. In pelargonium, high salinity decreased the total phenolic and total flavonoid contents, antioxidant capacity, N, K, Mg and P content, as well as chlorophyll fluorescence, compared to the control treatment. On the other hand, increased salinity levels increased the Na and Ca content and stomatal resistance. In common verbena, salinity decreased total phenolic content and chlorophyll fluorescence but increased total flavonoid content, antioxidants, leaf K, P, Na, Cu and Zn content, and stomatal resistance, compared to the control. In both species, high EC did not affect polyphenols, flavonoids or antioxidants, whereas it increased stomatal resistance and nutrient accumulation in the leaves, and decreased chlorophyll fluorescence compared to the control treatment. Damage indices, indicated by lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide production and the elevation of enzymes’ antioxidant activities, were evidenced in both saline- and high-EC-treated plants. In conclusion, despite having the same EC levels in the nutrient solution, it seems that ionic stress caused by high mineral concentrations in the nutrient solution had less severe effects on the tested plants than the relevant osmotic stress caused by high salinity due to the addition of NaCl in the nutrient solution.

The development of agriculture is linked to energy resources. Consequently, energy analysis in agroecosystems could be a useful tool for monitoring some measures in the agricultural sector to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The objectives of this study were to (a) evaluate differences of energy indices in orange and kiwi orchards, and (b) point out whether inputs, outputs, efficiency, productivity, and carbon footprint can play a key role in crop replacement. Proportional stratified random sampling was used to select 26 orchards (10 oranges, 16 kiwis) from the Prefecture of Arta, western Greece, during 2015 and 2016. Univariate statistical methods were combined with multivariate ones. Nitrogen, Mg, Zn, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, renewable energy inputs, fruit production, total outputs, and energy efficiency and productivity were statistically significantly high in the orange orchards. Phosphorus, Ca, irrigation, machinery, total inputs, intensity, non-renewable energy consumption, and carbon footprint were statistically significantly high in the kiwi orchards. The most important energy inputs for both fruit crops were fertilizers, fuels, irrigation, machinery, and herbicides. The orange orchards seem to be more friendly to the environment than the kiwi orchards by having low total energy inputs 32,210.3 MJ ha-1, intensity 1.4, consumption of non-renewable energy 0.7 MJ kg-1 and CO2 equivalent/fruit production 0.08 kg kg-1, and high energy outputs 105,120.0 MJ ha-1 and fruit production 53,648.0 kg ha-1. The findings of the present study show a relation between climate change and the production of farming systems, which can be a tool for decision makers. The correlation of the abovementioned parameters ensure higher profits and could help in achieving the best possible sustainable management of the agricultural ecosystems.

The preservation of fresh produce quality is a major aim in the food industry since consumers demand safe and of high nutritional value products. In recent decades there has been a turn towards the use of eco-friendly, natural products (i.e., essential oils-EOs) in an attempt to reduce chemical-based sanitizing agents (i.e., chlorine and chlorine-based agents). The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an eco-friendly product (EP—based on rosemary and eucalyptus essential oils) and two different application methods (vapor and dipping) on the quality attributes of tomato fruits throughout storage at 11 °C and 90% relative humidity for 14 days. The results indicated that overall, the EP was able to maintain the quality of tomato fruits. Dipping application was found to affect less the quality attributes of tomato, such as titratable acidity, ripening index and antioxidant activity compared to the vapor application method. Vapor application of 0.4% EP increased fruit’s antioxidant activity, whereas tomatoes dipped in EP solution presented decreased damage index (hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation levels), activating enzymes antioxidant capacity (catalases and peroxidases). Moreover, higher EP concentration (up to 0.8%) resulted in a less acceptable product compared to lower concentration (0.4%). Overall, the results from the present study suggest that the investigated EP can be used for the preservation of fresh produce instead of the current commercial sanitizing agent (chlorine), however, the method of application and conditions of application must be further assessed for every commodity tested.

Downy mildews caused by obligate biotrophic oomycetes result in severe crop losses worldwide. Among these pathogens, Pseudoperonospora cubensis and P. humuli, two closely related oomycetes, adversely affect cucurbits and hop, respectively. Discordant hypotheses concerning their taxonomic relationships have been proposed based on host–pathogen interactions and specificity evidence and gene sequences of a few individuals, but population genetics evidence supporting these scenarios is missing. Furthermore, nuclear and mitochondrial regions of both pathogens have been analyzed using microsatellites and phylogenetically informative molecular markers, but extensive comparative population genetics research has not been done. Here, we genotyped 138 current and historical herbarium specimens of those two taxa using microsatellites (SSRs). Our goals were to assess genetic diversity and spatial distribution, to infer the evolutionary history of P. cubensis and P. humuli, and to visualize genome-scale organizational relationship between both pathogens. High genetic diversity, modest gene flow, and presence of population structure, particularly in P. cubensis, were observed. When tested for cross-amplification, 20 out of 27 P. cubensis-derived gSSRs cross-amplified DNA of P. humuli individuals, but few amplified DNA of downy mildew pathogens from related genera. Collectively, our analyses provided a definite argument for the hypothesis that both pathogens are distinct species, and suggested further speciation in the P. cubensis complex.

Strawberry is considered as a fruit of high nutritional value, with appreciated benefits on human health. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are commonly used plant symbionts that affect plant growth and its effectiveness is plant species specific. Additionally, selenium (Se) projects a special interest to humans for its antioxidant specialties, and to plants, because of the potential to make them grow faster when added to the nutrient solution. Nonetheless, the performance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in Se biofortification in strawberry is unexplored. The purpose of the present study experiment was to determine whether mycorrhizal inoculation of AMF can have a positive impact on growth and quality of strawberries, and whether Se contributes in this effort or will adversely affect the plants. Four Se concentrations (0, 1, 5 and 10 mg L−1) in the nutrient solution, with or without mycorrhizal inoculation of AMF to the root system, were evaluated. Results demonstrated that Se of 10 mg L−1 negatively affected plant growth, photosynthetic rates, decreased fruit firmness and total soluble solids, induced oxidative stress in fruits and affected nutrient accumulation in different plant organs. Mycorrhizal inoculation of AMF mainly stimulated antioxidative mechanisms of the fruits and increased nutrient accumulation for plants grown at high Se levels. Based on our observations, mycorrhizal inoculation can enhance the nutritional value of strawberry fruits and strawberry plants seem to be a strong candidate for Se biofortification, allowing the rise of Se of the consumers’ intake.

Intensive crop production and irrational use of fertilizers and agrochemicals have questionable effects on the quality of products and the sustainable use of water for agricultural purposes. Organic cultivation and/or deficit irrigation are, among others, well appreciated practices for a sustainable crop production system. In the present study, spearmint plants (Mentha spicata L.) were grown in different cultivation schemes (conventional versus organic cultivation, full versus deficit irrigation), and effects on the plant physiological and biochemical attributes were examined in two harvesting periods. Deficit irrigation decreased plant growth, but increased total phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity of the plants at the second harvest. Spearmint nutrient accumulation was affected by the examined cultivation practices, nitrogen was decreased in organic cultivation, potassium and sodium were elevated at full-irrigated plants, while magnesium, phosphorus, and copper levels were higher at the deficit-irrigated plants. However, conventional/full-irrigated plants had increased height and fresh biomass at the first harvest. Essential oil content decreased at the second harvest in organic and/or deficit treated plants. Additionally, deficit irrigation affected plant growth and delayed the formation of carvone from limonene. The essential oils were further evaluated with regard to their bioactivity on a major vineyard pest Lobesia botrana. Volatile compounds from all essential oils elicited strong electroantennographic responses on female insects antennae, highlighting the role of carvone, which is the major constituent (~70%) in all the tested essential oils. M. spicata essential oils also exhibited larvicidal activity on L. botrana, suggesting the potential of their incorporation in integrated pest management systems.

Twelve peats of different degree of decomposition were obtained all over Europe, namely Ireland, Germany, Sweden, Finland and the Baltic states. Dolomitic limestone was applied at a rate of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 kg m-3. Samples were taken and analyzed for pH and Electrical Conductivity and BaCl2/DTPA extractable macro and micronutrients to investigate the effect liming on the availability of these nutrients particularly calcium and magnesium. A growing trial was conducted to determine the effect of liming and peat type on Solanum lycopersicum seedling growth and on micro and macro nutrients concentration of the plants as affected by peat type and lime rate. In addition we determined lignin and humic acid in a limited number of peats to investigate if these two parameters, lignin and humic acid were correlated with the pH regression slope obtained from lime application The regression line of the lime response was not similar, steeper with the lighter peats and less steep with the darker peats indicating that to get a pre-determined level of pH of darker peats a higher rate of lime would need to be added. The regression line (b) of Ca and Mg response to lime application did not vary greatly between the peats. However with some of the darker peats the initial levels of extractable Ca was as high as or higher than what one would get after applying 4 kg m-3 of lime in lighter peat. Increasing rates of lime increased the dry weight of the plants in the lighter peats. With some of the darker peats there was no positive response to lime and in fact a negative response at the higher levels of lime indicating that not only target pH should be taken into account regarding liming rate but also extractable Ca needs to be taken into consideration. Ca/B ratio went to very high levels indicating a possible B deficiency in these peats. In conclusion with more darker peats coming into the market from all over Europe with probability some having high levels extractable Ca, a pH response curve for determining lime rates would not be adequate as it could lead to poor plant growth. In such cases a BaCl2/DTPA extractable Ca analysis is warranted.

Almond (Prunus dulcis) is an important crop for Greece grown on 15.130 ha in 2019. In September 2019, a severe stem canker disease was observed in 6-year-old trees of cv Marta grafted on the rootstock 'F675C14', in a new almond grove of cvs Marta, Soleta, Antonela, Belona and Laurete, in Vlachiana, Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Only cv Marta trees were affected. Diseased trees exhibited cankers on trunks and branches with pale yellow to red-colored gum excreting from cankers, yellowing, leaf fall, twig and branch dieback, bark and wood tissue discoloration. Severely affected trees were killed. A Fusarium-like fungus was consistently isolated from symptomatic wood tissue previously surface-disinfested with 95% ethanol, on acidified potato dextrose agar (APDA). Emerging colonies were transferred to new PDA and the growth rate of the fungus was 7.86 mm/day at 24 °C in the dark. The abundant aerial mycelium was initially white, turning into pale orange in the centre after 7 days of growth on PDA. Microscopic observations revealed hyaline conidiophores measuring 26.74 ± 20.44 μm in length, developing microconidia 5.00 to 9.50 × 2.50 to 4.75 μm (average 6.64 × 3.50 μm) and macroconidia 10.00 to 23.25 × 3.75 to 5.50 μm (average 16.42 × 4.50 μm) in size. DNA from one representative single-spore isolate (code KOUB.AM.VR1) was extracted and the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of ribosomal DNA and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF 1-a) genes were amplified using the primer pairs ITS1/ITS4 (White et al. 1990) and EF1-F/EF2-R (O'Donnell et al. 1998), respectively. The PCR products were sequenced and deposited in GenBank (accession Nos. MW547397 and MW554492). Based on morphological characteristics (Leslie and Summerell 2006) and a BLAST search with 100.00% and 99.38% identity to published F. solani ITS and EF 1-a sequences in GenBank (KX034335.1, DQ247636.1) the fungus was identified as F. solani. Eight 3-year-old almond trees of cv. Marta were artificially inoculated in March 2020 by making a 6.0-mm-diameter hole into the trunk, inserting a 6-mm-diameter mycelial disc taken from a 10-day-old PDA culture, sealing the hole with cellophane membrane and covering with adhesive paper tape. Another eight trees of the same cultivar were mock-inoculated with sterilized PDA discs and served as controls. Potted trees were kept under ambient conditions. One month post inoculation, yellow gum was evident excreting around the inoculation point in F. solani-treated trees but not in the controls. Seven months post inoculation, longitudinal and transverse sections of inoculated trunks revealed internal and external symptoms similar to those observed under natural infection conditions and F. solani was steadily re-isolated from symptomatic wood tissue and identified by colony morphology. Neither symptoms nor positive isolations were observed in control trunks. Pathogenicity tests were repeated twice. Fusarium solani has been reported as the causal agent of stem canker or wood decay diseases in several woody hosts including bitternut hickory, black walnut, mulberry and pistachio trees (Crespo et al. 2019; Markakis et al. 2017; Park and Juzwik 2012; Tisserat 1987). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first worldwide report of stem canker caused by F. solani on almond tree. This disease could potentially be an increasing problem in almond growing areas and result in severe crop losses. Hence, effective management practices should be investigated and applied.

Plant-associated bacterial communities are important contributors towards plant health and productivity, and are increasingly acknowledged for having the potential to alter plants' response to climate extremes, such as drought. Viticulture is generally conducted in areas that are prone to seasonal water deficit, and irrigation is the common way to counter this. In addition, soil conservation measures, such as cover cropping and no-tillage, are increasingly used. However, the effect of these management practices, in particular in viticulture, on soil bacterial communities remains unclear. Therefore, the objective was to examine the effect of irrigation and tillage on shaping soil bacterial communities associated with different grapevine cultivars, at different plant phenological stages.We conducted an experiment whereby we examined the soil bacterial community of three Vitis vinifera L. (grapevine) cultivars (two indigenous and one international, grown at different locations in the same vineyard) under different management practices (irrigated and non-irrigated, tillage and no-tillage). Since there is evidence that plant phenology can also affect soil microbial communities, we sampled soil at three different plant developmental stages (flowering, veraison and harvest).Soil bacterial communities primarily correlated with cultivar and location. At harvest we observed a link between bacterial communities and grape quality and yield measures and at all stages with soil physicochemical properties. A number of taxa were enriched in one or two cultivars, but these were generally in low abundance in our dataset. We also found an effect of plant phenology and management practices within each cultivar. For the two indigenous cultivars, soil bacterial communities at the flowering stage were most distinct, while for the international cultivar it was at the veraison stage. However, for all three cultivars, this effect differed by tillage treatment: bacterial communities in the tillage treatment varied by plant phenology, but in the no-tillage treatment less difference was observed, suggesting a buffering effect. While irrigation did lead to changes in bacterial communities, the effect was not as strong as that of the other factors.Our results show that soil bacterial communities in grapevines are shaped by both plant-associated effects (i.e. cultivar and plant phenological stage) and environmental variables (i.e. soil management and soil physicochemical properties), and importantly, that these factors have an interactive effect. Future research on soil bacterial communities in grapevines should take this variability into account, as well as focusing on its functional implications.

To explore salt tolerance adaptive mechanisms in the model legume Medicago truncatula, we used three genotypes with differential salt-sensitivity: TN6.18 (highly sensitive), Jemalong A17 (moderately sensitive), and TN1.11 (tolerant). Cellular damage was monitored in roots and leaves 48 h after 200 mM NaCl treatment by measuring lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide, and hydrogen peroxide contents, further supported by leaf stomatal conductance and chlorophyll readings. The salt-tolerant genotype TN1.11 displayed the lowest level of oxidative damage, in contrast to the salt sensitive TN6.18, which showed the highest responses. Metabolite profiling was employed to explore the differential genotype-related responses to stress at the molecular level. The metabolic data in the salt tolerant TN1.11 roots revealed an accumulation of metabolites related to the raffinose pathway. To further investigate the sensitivity to salinity, global transcriptomic profiling using microarray analysis was carried out on the salt-stressed sensitive genotypes. In TN6.18, the transcriptomic analysis identified a lower expression of many genes related to stress signalling, not previously linked to salinity, and corresponding to the TIR-NBS-LRR gene class. Overall, this global approach contributes to gaining significant new insights into the complexity of stress adaptive mechanisms and to the identification of potential targets for crop improvement.

Climate change will increase the occurrence of plants being simultaneously subjected to drought and pathogen stress. Drought can alter the way in which plants respond to pathogens. This research addresses how grapevine responds to the concurrent challenge of drought stress and Plasmopara viticola, the causal agent of downy mildew, and how one stress affects the other. Self-rooted cuttings of the drought-tolerant grapevine cultivar Xynisteri and the drought-sensitive cultivar Chardonnay were exposed to full or deficit irrigation (40% of full irrigation) and artificially inoculated with P. viticola in vitro or in planta. Leaves were sampled at an early infection stage to determine the influence of the single and combined stresses on oxidative parameters, chlorophyll, and phytohormones. Under full irrigation, Xynisteri was more susceptible to P. viticola than the drought-sensitive cultivar Chardonnay. Drought stress increased the susceptibility of grapevine leaves inoculated in vitro, but both cultivars showed resistance against P. viticola when inoculated in planta. Abscisic acid, rather than jasmonic acid and salicylic acid, seemed to play a prominent role in this resistance. The irrigation-dependent susceptibility observed in this study indicates that the practices used to mitigate the effects of climate change may have a profound impact on plant pathogens.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a coccidian protozoan that causes cyclosporiasis, a severe gastroenteric disease, especially for immunocompromised patients, children, and the elderly. The parasite is considered as an emerging organism and a major contributor of gastroenteritis worldwide. Although the global prevalence of cyclosporiasis morbidity and mortality has not been assessed, global concern has arisen since diarrheal illness and gastroenteritis significantly affect both developing countries and industrialized nations. In the last two decades, an increasing number of foodborne outbreaks has been associated with the consumption of fresh produce that is difficult to clean thoroughly and is consumed without processing. Investigations of these outbreaks have revealed the necessity to increase the awareness in clinicians of this infection, since this protozoan is often ignored by surveillance systems, and to establish control measures to reduce contamination of fresh produce. In this review, the major cyclosporiasis outbreaks linked to the consumption of ready to eat fresh fruits and vegetables are presented.

Chromium has been proven to be extremely phytotoxic. This study explored the impacts of increasing Cr(VI) exposure (up to 10 mg L−1 K2Cr2O7) on the growth and development of alfalfa plants and adaptation responses employed, in an environmentally relevant context. The threshold concentration of K2Cr2O7 in irrigation water beyond which stress responses are initiated is 1 mg L−1. Lower Cr(VI) exposure (0.5 mg L−1 K2Cr2O7) induced hormesis, evident through increased biomass and larger leaves, likely mediated by increased NO content (supported by elevated NR enzymatic activity and overexpression of NR and ndh genes). Elevated Cr(VI) exposure (5 and 10 mg L−1 K2Cr2O7) resulted in reduced biomass and smaller leaves, and lower levels of photosynthetic pigment (10 mg L−1 K2Cr2O7). Higher levels of lipid peroxidation, H2O2 and NO contents in these plants suggested nitro-oxidative stress. Stress responses included increased SOD and CAT enzymatic activities, further supported to some extent by MnSOD, FeSOD, Cu/ZnSOD and CAT transcripts levels. GST7 and GST17 gene expression patterns, as well as proline content, P5CS enzymatic activity and corresponding P5CS and P5CR gene expression levels emphasized the role of proline and GSTs in the adaptation responses. Results highlight the importance of managing Cr(VI) levels in irrigation water.

The environmental burden from crop production byproducts is gradually increasing and necessitates the sustainable management of waste towards a circular economy approach. In the present study, three byproducts (cotton ginning waste (CGW), ground hazelnut husks (GHH) and ground peanut husks (GPH)) were evaluated in lettuce cultivation. For this purpose, the tested materials were incorporated in soil at two different rates (25% and 50% of total substrate volume) while a control treatment (no addition of byproducts) was also considered. Fresh weight per plant and total yield was the highest for the GHH50% treatment. The highest fat, protein, carbohydrates and energy content were observed for the CGW25% treatment. Chemical composition also differed among the tested byproducts where CGW25% treatment had the highest total tocopherols, sugars (sucrose, fructose, trehalose and total sugars) and organic acids content. The most abundant fatty acids were &alpha, linolenic, linoleic and palmitic acid in all the tested treatments, while the highest antioxidant activity was observed for the GHH50% treatment. Regarding polyphenols, phenolic acids content was the highest in the GHH treatments, whereas flavonoids were the highest for the CGW25% treatment. No cytotoxicity against the PLP2 non-tumor cell line was observed, whereas only the GPH50% treatment showed moderate efficacy against HeLa, HepG2 and MCF-7 cell lines. The tested extracts also showed moderate antibacterial activities and only the extracts from the CGW50% treatment were more effective than the positive control against Trichoderma viride. In conclusion, the present results showed the great potential of using the tested byproducts as soil amendments for vegetable crops production, since they may improve the nutritional parameters, the chemical profile and the bioactivities of the final product. The suggested alternative use of the tested byproducts not only will increase the added value of crops but will also alleviate the environmental burden from bulky agroindustry byproducts.
