A critically important process affecting the climate evolution and potential habitability of an exoplanet is atmospheric escape, in which high-energy radiation from a star drives the escape of hydrogen atoms and other light elements from a planet's atmosphere. L 98-59 is a benchmark system for studying such atmospheric processes, with three transiting terrestrial-size planets receiving Venus-like instellations (4-25 S$_\oplus$) from their M3 host star. We use the VPLanet model to simulate the evolution of the L 98-59 system and the atmospheric escape of its inner three small planets, given different assumed initial water quantities. We find that, regardless of their initial water content, all three planets accumulate significant quantities of oxygen due to efficient water photolysis and hydrogen loss. All three planets also receive enough XUV flux to drive rapid water loss, which considerably affects their developing climates and atmospheres. Even in scenarios of low initial water content, our results suggest that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be sensitive to observations of retained oxygen on the L 98-59 planets in its future scheduled observations, with planets b and c being the most likely targets to possess an extended atmosphere. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has detected thousands of exoplanet candidates since 2018, most of which have yet to be confirmed. A key step in the confirmation process of these candidates is ruling out false positives through vetting. Vetting also eases the burden on follow-up observations, provides input for demographics studies, and facilitates training machine learning algorithms. Here we present the TESS Triple-9 (TT9) catalog -- a uniformly-vetted catalog containing dispositions for 999 exoplanet candidates listed on ExoFOP-TESS, known as TESS Objects of Interest (TOIs). The TT9 was produced using the Discovery And Vetting of Exoplanets pipeline, DAVE, and utilizing the power of citizen science as part of the Planet Patrol project. More than 70% of the TOIs listed in the TT9 pass our diagnostic tests, and are thus marked as true planetary candidates. We flagged 144 candidates as false positives, and identified 146 as potential false positives. At the time of writing, the TT9 catalog contains ~20% of the entire ExoFOP-TESS TOIs list, demonstrates the synergy between automated tools and citizen science, and represents the first stage of our efforts to vet all TOIs. We investigate how rapid stellar rotation commonly seen in A/F stars can influence planet habitability. Specifically, we model how rapid rotation influences a planet's irradiation and determine the location of the habitable zone for stars in the mass range $1.3M_\odot\leq M_\star\leq 2.2M_\odot$. Rapid stellar rotation can dramatically change a star's luminosity and spectral energy distribution and, therefore, can impact the habitability of any surrounding planets. Stars of mass $M_\star\gtrsim1.3M_\odot$ commonly rotate near their breakup speeds, which causes two effects relevant to planet habitability. First, these stars flatten into oblate spheroids with shorter polar radii and elongated equatorial radii. Second, rapid rotation induces a pole-to-equator temperature gradient on the surface of these stars. Using a 1D climate model, we calculate the inner and outer edges of the habitable zone of well-known rapid rotators and average theoretical stars in our stellar mass range. We find that, in general, rapid rotation causes the habitable zone to reside closer in than for a non-rotating equivalent star. We also find that gravity darkening dramatically reduces stellar UV emission, which combats the common assumption that high-mass stars emit too much UV light for habitable worlds. Overall, we determine that rapid stellar rotation has important consequences for the overall habitability of a system and must be accounted for both when modeling exoplanet environments and in observation of planets around high-mass stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

High-resolution transmission spectroscopy is a powerful method for probing the extended atmospheres of short-period exoplanets. With the advancement of ultra-stable echelle spectrographs and the advent of 30-meter class telescopes on the horizon, even minor observational and physical effects will become important when modeling atmospheric absorption of atomic species. In this work we demonstrate how the non-uniform temperature across the surface of a fast rotating star, i.e., gravity darkening, can affect the observed transmission spectrum in a handful of atomic transitions commonly observed in short-period exoplanet atmospheres. We simulate transits of the ultra-hot Jupiters KELT-9 b and HAT-P-70 b but our results are applicable to all short-period gas giants transiting rapidly rotating stars. In general, we find that gravity darkening has a small effect on the average transmission spectrum but can change the shape of the absorption light curve, similar to the effect observed in broadband photometric transits. While the magnitude of gravity darkening effects are on the same order as the noise in transmission spectra observed with 10-meter class telescopes, future high-quality spectroscopic light curves for individual atomic absorption lines collected with 30-meter class telescopes will need to account for this effect., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. We report the discovery of an ultrahot Jupiter with an extremely short orbital period of $0.67247414\,\pm\,0.00000028$ days ($\sim$16 hr). The $1.347 \pm 0.047$ $R_{\rm Jup}$ planet, initially identified by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, orbits TOI-2109 (TIC 392476080): a $T_{\rm eff} \sim 6500$ K F-type star with a mass of $1.447 \pm 0.077$ $M_{\rm Sun}$, a radius of $1.698 \pm 0.060$ $R_{\rm Sun}$, and a rotational velocity of $v\sin i_* = 81.9 \pm 1.7$ km s$^{-1}$. The planetary nature of TOI-2109b was confirmed through radial velocity measurements, which yielded a planet mass of $5.02 \pm 0.75$ $M_{\rm Jup}$. Analysis of the Doppler shadow in spectroscopic transit observations indicates a well-aligned system, with a sky-projected obliquity of $\lambda = 1\overset{\circ}{.}7 \pm 1\overset{\circ}{.}7$. From the TESS full-orbit light curve, we measured a secondary eclipse depth of $731 \pm 46$ ppm, as well as phase-curve variations from the planet's longitudinal brightness modulation and ellipsoidal distortion of the host star. Combining the TESS-band occultation measurement with a $K_s$-band secondary eclipse depth ($2012 \pm 80$ ppm) derived from ground-based observations, we find that the dayside emission of TOI-2109b is consistent with a brightness temperature of $3631 \pm 69$ K, making it the second hottest exoplanet hitherto discovered. By virtue of its extreme irradiation and strong planet-star gravitational interaction, TOI-2109b is an exceptionally promising target for intensive follow-up studies using current and near-future telescope facilities to probe for orbital decay, detect tidally driven atmospheric escape, and assess the impacts of H$_2$ dissociation and recombination on the global heat transport., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, published in AJ

We present an optical-to-infrared transmission spectrum of the inflated sub-Saturn KELT-11b measured with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 G141 spectroscopic grism, and the Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer) at 3.6 $\mu$m, in addition to a Spitzer 4.5 $\mu$m secondary eclipse. The precise HST transmission spectrum notably reveals a low-amplitude water feature with an unusual shape. Based on free retrieval analyses with varying molecular abundances, we find strong evidence for water absorption. Depending on model assumptions, we also find tentative evidence for other absorbers (HCN, TiO, and AlO). The retrieved water abundance is generally $\lesssim 0.1\times$ solar (0.001--0.7$\times$ solar over a range of model assumptions), several orders of magnitude lower than expected from planet formation models based on the solar system metallicity trend. We also consider chemical equilibrium and self-consistent 1D radiative-convective equilibrium model fits and find they too prefer low metallicities ($[M/H] \lesssim -2$, consistent with the free retrieval results). However, all the retrievals should be interpreted with some caution since they either require additional absorbers that are far out of chemical equilibrium to explain the shape of the spectrum or are simply poor fits to the data. Finally, we find the Spitzer secondary eclipse is indicative of full heat redistribution from KELT-11b's dayside to nightside, assuming a clear dayside. KELT-9 b is an ultra hot Jupiter transiting a rapidly rotating, oblate early-A-type star in a polar orbit. We model the effect of rapid stellar rotation on KELT-9 b's transit light curve using photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\tess) to constrain the planet's true spin-orbit angle and to explore how KELT-9 b may be influenced by stellar gravity darkening. We constrain the host star's equatorial radius to be $1.089\pm0.017$ times as large as its polar radius and its local surface brightness to vary by $\sim38$\% between its hot poles and cooler equator. We model the stellar oblateness and surface brightness gradient and find that it causes the transit light curve to lack the usual symmetry around the time of minimum light. We take advantage of the light curve asymmetry to constrain KELT-9 b's true spin orbit angle (${87^\circ}^{+10^\circ}_{-11^\circ}$), agreeing with \citet{gaudi2017giant} that KELT-9 b is in a nearly polar orbit. We also apply a gravity darkening correction to the spectral energy distribution model from \citet{gaudi2017giant} and find that accounting for rapid rotation gives a better fit to available spectroscopy and yields a more reliable estimate for the star's polar effective temperature., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1911.05025

MASCARA-4 b is a hot Jupiter in a highly-misaligned orbit around a rapidly-rotating A3V star that was observed for 54 days by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\tess). We perform two analyses of MASCARA-4 b using a stellar gravity-darkened model. First, we measure MASCARA-4 b's misaligned orbital configuration by modeling its \tess~photometric light curve. We take advantage of the asymmetry in MASCARA-4 b's transit due to its host star's gravity-darkened surface to measure MASCARA-4 b's true spin-orbit angle to be $104^{\circ+7^\circ}_{-13^\circ}$. We also detect a $\sim4\sigma$ secondary eclipse at $0.491\pm0.007$ orbital phase, proving that the orbit is slightly eccentric. Second, we model MASCARA-4 b's insolation including gravity-darkening and find that the planet's received XUV flux varies by $4$\% throughout its orbit. MASCARA-4 b's short-period, polar orbit suggests that the planet likely underwent dramatic orbital evolution to end up in its present-day configuration and that it receives a varying stellar irradiance that perpetually forces the planet out of thermal equilibrium. These findings make MASCARA-4 b an excellent target for follow-up characterization to better understand orbital evolution and current-day of planets around high-mass stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We carry out a phase-curve analysis of the KELT-9 system using photometric observations from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The measured secondary eclipse depth and peak-to-peak atmospheric brightness modulation are $650^{+14}_{-15}$ ppm and $566\pm16$ ppm, respectively. The planet's brightness variation reaches maximum $31\pm5$ minutes before the midpoint of the secondary eclipse, indicating a $5\overset{\circ}{.}2\pm0\overset{\circ}{.}9$ eastward shift in the dayside hot spot from the substellar point. We also detect stellar pulsations on KELT-9 with a period of $7.58695\pm0.00091$ hours. The dayside emission of KELT-9b in the TESS bandpass is consistent with a blackbody brightness temperature of $4600\pm100$ K. The corresponding nightside brightness temperature is $3040\pm100$ K, comparable to the dayside temperatures of the hottest known exoplanets. In addition, we detect a significant phase-curve signal at the first harmonic of the orbital frequency and a marginal signal at the second harmonic. While the amplitude of the first harmonic component is consistent with the predicted ellipsoidal distortion modulation assuming equilibrium tides, the phase of this photometric variation is shifted relative to the expectation. Placing KELT-9b in the context of other exoplanets with phase-curve observations, we find that the elevated nightside temperature and relatively low day-night temperature contrast agree with the predictions of atmospheric models that include H$_{2}$ dissociation and recombination. The nightside temperature of KELT-9b implies an atmospheric composition containing about 50% molecular and 50% atomic hydrogen at 0.1 bar, a nightside emission spectrum that deviates significantly from a blackbody, and a 0.5-2.0 $\mu$m transmission spectrum that is featureless at low resolution., Comment: Published in AJ, updated with proof corrections. 17 pages, 8 figures

We measure the bulk system parameters of the seismically active, rapidly-rotating $\delta$-Scuti KOI-976 and constrain the orbit geometry of its transiting binary companion using a combined approach of asteroseismology and gravity-darkening light curve analysis. KOI-976 is a $1.62\pm0.2~\mathrm{M_\odot}$ star with a measured $v\sin(i)$ of $120\pm2$ km/s and seismically-induced variable signal that varies by $\sim$ 0.6\% of the star's total photometric brightness. We take advantage of the star's oblate shape and seismic activity to perform three measurements of its obliquity angle relative to the plane of the sky. We first apply rotational splitting theory to the star's variable signal observed in short-cadence \emph{Kepler} photometry to constrain KOI-976's obliquity angle, and then subtract off variability from that dataset using the linear algorithm for significance reduction software {\tt LASR}. We perform gravity-darkened fits to \emph{Kepler} variability-subtracted short-cadence photometry and to \emph{Kepler's} phase-folded long-cadence photometry to obtain two more measurements of the star's obliquity. We find that the binary system transits in a grazing configuration with measured obliquity values of $36^\circ\pm17^\circ$, $46^\circ\pm16^\circ$, and $43^\circ\pm20^\circ$ respectively for the three measurements. We develop a technique for removing stellar variability in the light curves of $\delta$-Scuti and similar stars. Our technique, which we name the Linear Algorithm for Significance Reduction (LASR), subtracts oscillations from a time series by minimizing their statistical significance in frequency space. We demonstrate that LASR can subtract variable signals of near-arbitrary complexity and can robustly handle close frequency pairs and overtone frequencies. We demonstrate that our algorithm performs an equivalent fit as prewhitening to the straightforward variable signal of KIC 9700322. I model the effect of rapid stellar rotation on a planet's insolation. Fast-rotating stars have induced pole-to-equator temperature gradients (known as gravity-darkening) of up to several thousand Kelvin that affect the star's luminosity and peak emission wavelength as a function of latitude. When orbiting such a star, a planet's annual insolation can strongly vary depending on its orbit inclination. Specifically, inclined orbits result in temporary exposure to the star's hotter poles. I find that gravity-darkening can drive changes in a planet's equilibrium temperature of up to $\sim15\%$ due to increased irradiance near the stellar poles. This effect can also vary a planet's exposure to UV radiation by up to $\sim80\%$ throughout its orbit as it is exposed to an irradiance spectrum corresponding to different stellar effective temperatures over time., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We constrain the true spin-orbit alignment of the KOI-89 system by numerically fitting the two \emph{Kepler} photometric lightcurves produced by transiting planets KOI-89.01 and KOI-89.02. The two planets have periods of 84.69 days and 207.58 days, respectively. We find that the two bodies are low-density giant planets with radii $0.45 \pm 0.03~\mathrm{R_{jup}}$ and $0.43 \pm 0.05~\mathrm{R_{jup}}$ and spin-orbit misalignments $72^{\circ} \pm 3^\circ$ and $73^{\circ+11}_{-5}$, respectively. Via dynamic stability tests we demonstrate the general trend of higher system stability with the two planets close to mutual alignment and estimate their coalignment angle to $20^\circ \pm 20^\circ$ -- i.e. the planets are misaligned with the star but may be aligned with each other. We fit the \emph{Kepler} photometric light curve of the KOI-368 system using an oblate, gravity-darkened stellar model in order to constrain its spin-orbit alignment. We find that the system is relatively well-aligned with a sky-projected spin-orbit alignment of $\lambda=10^{\circ}\pm2^{\circ}$, a stellar obliquity of $\psi=3^{\circ}\pm7^{\circ}$, and a true spin-orbit alignment of $\varphi=11^{\circ}\pm3^{\circ}$. Although our measurement differs significantly from zero, the low value for $\varphi$ is consistent with spin-orbit alignment. We also measure various transit parameters of the KOI-368 system: $R_{\star}=2.28\pm0.02 R_{\odot}$, $R_{p}=1.83\pm0.02R_{jup}$, and $i=89.221^{\circ}\pm0.013^{\circ}$.
