This study proposes a strategy for accurate mapping of rubber trees through the analysis of Landsat time series datasets. The phenological dynamics of rubber trees were derived from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to verify the three important phenological metrics of rubber trees; defoliation, foliation and their growing stages. A decade (2006-2015) ago, Landsat time series NDVIs were used to study the strength of relationship between rubber trees, evergreen trees and oil palm trees. Two important results that could discriminate these three types of vegetation were found; firstly, a weak relationship of NDVIs between rubber trees and evergreen trees during the defoliation period (r2 = 0.1358) and secondly between rubber trees and oil palm trees during the growing period (r2 = 0.2029). This analysis was verified using Support Vector Machine to map the distribution of the three types of vegetation. An accurate mapping strategy of rubber trees was successfully formulated. Investigation of rainfall–run-off modelling is an important subject to develop any available means to water supply, which maintains human life such as run-off harvesting method. This study aims to analyse and understand the rainfall–run-off relationship in a part of Babil city, Iraq. Curve number which is a function of land use, soil texture, soil moisture and land slope is used in this study. Remote sensing and GIS are used to analyse the data and to produce the run-off depth map for the study area. Then, the run-off depth is used with rainfall to investigate the relationship between them using linear correlation. This study showed a strong linear relationship between rainfall and run-off (R2 = 0.992). It indicates that in the absence of rainfall data, run-off data can be used to estimate rainfall amount. In Malaysia, areas under oil palm plantations have increased dramatically since the early twentieth century and have resulted in multiple conversions of land change. This paper presents a spatial and temporal model for simulation of oil palm expansion in the Kuala Langat district, Malaysia. The model is an integration of cellular automata (CA), multi-criteria evaluation (MCE), and Markov chain (MC) analysis while MCE provides transition rules of CA iterations and MC analysis assigns a transition probability to each single pixel at the time steps. Evaluation criteria consist of constraints and nine suitability factors indicating environmental and socio-economic issues of oil palm development. In the first simulation, changes of six land-cover classes were projected to the year 2008 based on transitions between 1997 and 2002. Two measures of quantity disagreement and allocation disagreement were adopted to validate model outcome. The simulation of land-cover change of the year 2020 was done based on the transition observed between 1997 and 2002 regarding the satisfactory agreement of the projection and the reference data at the first simulation. The results, based on five landscape metrics, indicated continuous spatial patterns of oil palm plantations but more fragmented spatial patterns of other land classes by the year 2020. Unplanned population growth, alongside unplanned development, lack of good housing and inadequate infrastructure resulted in a lot of slums and informal settlements in Iraqi cities. In 1980s there were major housing shortage in Iraq as a result of war and political instability which led to economic meltdown. Kirkuk city was one of the most affected cities by multiethnic crises as a result of employment, housing and local government members' concentration in Kirkuk which led to political and economic migration. Suitable site selection for housing is complicated not just because it has to do with technical procedures and topography but due to environmental, social and political issues which can lead to conflict. Hence, this study seeks to discover the suitable site selection for housing using Geographical Information System (GIS), high resolution remote sensing data and multi criteria analysis (MCA). Introduction: Thalassaemia is one of the major health problems in Malaysia. With safe blood transfusion regime, the lifespan of patients with transfusion-dependent thalassaemia (TDT) has improved but at the cost of a higher risk of developing endocrine disorders. It is crucial for us to monitor the iron overload to prevent end organ damage. This study aims to evaluate the iron burden and prevalence of endocrinopathies in patients with TDT in Sarawak., Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 2020 to June 2020 in six government hospitals in Sarawak. A total of 89 patients with TDT, aged 10 years and above, were recruited., Results: Out of the 89 patients, there were 54 males (60.7%) and 35 females (39.3%) with a median age of 21 years (range 10.0-65.0). Sixty-seven (75.3%) patients had betathalassaemia major and 15 (16.9%) patients had haemoglobin E beta-thalassaemia (HbE beta-thalassaemia), remaining seven patients had other genotypes. Thirty-one (34.8%) patients had mean serum ferritin 2500ng/ml and above, and 44 (66.6%) had liver iron concentration (LIC) ≥7mg/g. The prevalence of endocrine disorders in our cohort was 69.7%. The most common endocrinopathies were short stature (n=46, 51.7%), followed by hypogonadism (n=24, 26.9%), delayed puberty (n=23, 25.8%), hypothyroidism (n=10, 11.2%), diabetes mellitus (n=9, 10.1%), impaired glucose tolerance (n=6, 6.7%) and hypoparathyroidism (n=3, 3.3%). Endocrinopathies were significantly associated with age (p=0.01), age at initiating regular blood transfusion (p<0.01) and duration of regular blood transfusion (p<0.01)., Conclusion: Our data shows that the development of endocrinopathies in TDT can be time dependent. Early detection of endocrine-related complications and prompt treatment with iron chelation therapy are important to improve morbidity and mortality. A multidisciplinary approach with good patient-doctor collaboration is the key to improving patient care in our settings.
