2. Seroprevalence of bovine anaplasmosis caused by Anaplasma marginale in Malaysia

Abstract

Anaplasmosis, also known as yellow fever, is an infectious parasitic disease of cattle caused by the protozoan Anaplasma marginale. Anaplasma marginale infects the erythrocytes and causes severe anaemia, weakness, loss of appetite, fever, depression, abortion, decreased milk production, constipation, jaundice and sometimes death. In Malaysia, data on A. marginale infection is still behind compared to other parasites such as nematodes. Anaplasmosis in livestock has received little attention in Malaysia with only occasional reports in cattle. In addition, the determinants of tick- and fly-borne transmission are not well understood. Looking into this possibility, this study was carried out to investigate and to compare the prevalence rate of bovine anaplasmosis in Malaysia. A seroprevalence study on bovine anaplasmosis was conducted at the Veterinary Research Institute, Malaysia. Sera of various cattle breeds were collected from farms and abattoirs to be tested for the presence of A. marginale. Competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA) Anaplasma antibody test kits by VMRD, Inc. were used for this study, where antibodies to A. marginale from sample sera inhibit the binding of horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labelled monoclonal antibody to the Anaplasma antigen coated on the plastic wells. A total number of 267 serum samples were tested and 79.4% were positive for bovine anaplasmosis. Results showed that the infection percentage is 100% in Pahang while the state with lowest infection percentage is Sabah with 59.2%. A comparison is done between Peninsular Malaysia with Sabah and Sarawak. The infection percentage in Peninsular Malaysia is higher at 87% while Sabah and Sarawak has an infection percentage of 60%. 5. Pollutant-induced over-activation of phagocytes is concomitantly associated with peroxidative damage in fish tissues.

Abstract

Pollutant-induced abnormal functioning of phagocytes and associated consequences were studied in freshwater catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch). Fish were exposed to effluent collected from bleached kraft type of paper mill at the concentration levels of 0.5, 1 and 2% for 15, 30, 60 and 90 days. Respiratory burst activity of peritoneal and head kidney phagocytes of exposed fish was measured by nitroblue tetrazolium reduction assay. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) was estimated in liver, gill and kidney of fish by measuring thiobarbituric acid reaction substances. It was observed that the phagocyte-activating xenobiotics of effluent induced an increase in the respiratory burst activity in phagocytes. The induction of respiratory burst activity was concomitantly associated with an increase in the peroxidative damage of tissues. The tissues most affected were kidney and gills. The change in LPO values in the gills of exposed fish was concentration- and time-dependent, showing significant increases (P<0.05 to <0.001) in all the exposed groups as compared with control fish. An almost similar pattern of LPO was observed in head kidney tissue (P<0.05 to <0.001). As regards liver, increase in LPO was not widespread, except at 0.5% for 90 days (P<0.05). In fact, reduced rates of LPO were observed in the livers of some groups. The results of respiratory burst corroborate with the phagocytic activation as well as with the extent of lipid peroxidation in the tissues, showing high population of circulatory phagocytes. Our results demonstrate that fish of polluted water are subjected to oxidative stress of multifarious dimensions.

Abstract

The entry distribution in angular momentum and excitation energy for the formation of 254No has been measured after the 208Pb(48Ca,2n) reaction at 215 and 219 MeV. This nucleus is populated up to spin 22Planck's over 2pi and excitation energy greater, similar6 MeV above the yrast line, with the half-maximum points of the energy distributions at approximately 5 MeV for spins between 12Planck's over 2pi and 22Planck's over 2pi. This suggests that the fission barrier is greater, similar5 MeV and that the shell-correction energy persists to high spin.

8. Infrared Study of Acetophenone Adsorption on Mordenite and Dealuminated Mordenite.

Abstract

Infrared spectra of acetophenone adsorbed on mordenite and acid-leached mordenite are reported. The effects of dealumination were characterized by pyridine adsorption and 29Si and 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MAS NMR). Adsorption of pyridine gave bands at 1634 and 1545 cm-1 due to vibrations of pyridinium ions and a band at 1621 cm-1 characteristic of pyridine ligated to Lewis acidic Al3+ sites. 27Al NMR gave peaks at 55 ppm due to tetrahedral framework Al and at 0 ppm due to octahedral extraframework Al. 29Si NMR gave peaks at -106 and -112 ppm due to Si(1Al) and Si(OAl) species, respectively. For acetophenone on mordenite, spectra contained nu(C&dbond;O) bands at 1685, 1671, 1650, and 1630 cm-1 due to physisorbed acetophenone containing unperturbed C&dbond;O groups, acetophenone hydrogen bonded with external and internal silanol groups, acetophenone hydrogen bonded to Brønsted acidic Si(OH)Al groups, and acetophenone ligated to Lewis acidic Al3+ ions, respectively. Dealumination converted 56% of the Si(1Al) species to Si(OAl), reduced the concentrations of both framework and extraframework Al, reduced the concentration of Si(OH)Al groups, and greatly reduced the population of Lewis acidic sites, but generated internal silanol groups which formed hydrogen bonds with acetophenone molecules. Residual Al3+ sites and Si(OH)Al groups after dealumination could interact with adsorbed pyridine molecules but for steric reasons were unable to form adsorption complexes with acetophenone. Evidence for the protonation of acetophenone was inconclusive. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.

9. Infrared Study of Substituted Acetophenones Adsorbed on Silica

Abstract

Infrared spectra are reported of silica preheated at 873 K and exposed at 295 K to the vapors of four acetophenones (H, 4-Me, 4-OMe, and 4-NO2). Surface-adsorbate interactions involved hydrogen bonding between isolated silanol groups and carbonyl groups, the strength of the hydrogen bonds being related to the electronic effects of the acetophenone ring substituents. The 4-OMe compound also generated SiOH&middot;&middot;&middot;OMe hydrogen bonds probably via a bridging structure involving two silanol groups perturbed simultaneously by each adsorbed molecule. The mode of adsorption of substituted benzene derivatives on silica is strongly dependent on the electronic effects of the substituents on each other and on the aromatic pi-electron charge density.
