Tool wear monitoring is critical in advanced manufacturing as it directly effects the quality of products being machined. Monitoring the tool wear helps to estimate and enhance the lifetime of the tool and ensures better quality of the machined workpieces. To achieve this, it involves the diagnosis of the anomalies or faults at the incipient period followed by the estimation of the lifetime of the tool. By incorporating external sensors on CNC machines where hard turning experiments were performed, various machine learning approaches and analyses were investigated on the generated datasets. This book chapter aims to summarize the various efforts undertaken in tool wear condition diagnostics and prognostics using a data analysis framework. The key lessons learnt from these analyses will be invaluable for readers in providing an impetus in adopting such frameworks in their respective machining environments.

International audience; Many systems such as turbo-generators, wind turbines and helicopters show intrinsic time-periodic behaviors. Usually, these structures are considered to be faithfully modeled as linear time-invariant (LTI). In some cases where the rotor is anisotropic, this modeling does not hold and the equations of motion lead necessarily to a linear periodically time- varying (referred to as LPTV in the control and digital signal field or LTP in the mechanical and nonlinear dynamics world) model. Classical modal analysis methodologies based on the classical time-invariant eigenstructure (frequencies and damping ratios) of the system no more apply. This is the case in particular for subspace methods. For such time-periodic systems, the modal analysis can be described by characteristic exponents called Floquet multipliers. The aim of this paper is to suggest a new subspace-based algorithm that is able to extract these multipliers and the corresponding frequencies and damping ratios. The algorithm is then tested on a numerical model of a hinged-bladed helicopter on the ground.

The dynamics of rotating systems such as helicopters and wind turbines show periodically time-varying behavior. Differently from the linear time-invariant case, such systems cannot be characterized by the classical modal parametrization. An alternative description is made possible with the Floquet theory which extends the modal analysis and the notions of frequencies and damping ratios to the periodic case. Based on this description, the present paper suggests a new output-only subspace identification algorithm able to extract the modal parameters. Besides, in operational modal analysis, the identified modes may be subjected to statistical uncertainty from ambient vibration measurements. Hence, the suggested identification algorithm will allow as well an efficient estimation of the uncertainty bounds on the identified modal parameters.

International audience; In this paper, an extension of the output-only subspace identification, to the class of linear periodically time-varying (LPTV) systems, is proposed. The goal is to identify a useful information about the system’s stability using the Floquet theory which gives a necessary and sufficient condition for stability analysis. This information is retrieved from a matrix called the monodromy matrix, which is extracted by some simultaneous singular value decompositions (SVD) and from a resolution of a least squares criterion. The method is, finally, illustrated by a simulation of a model of a helicopter with a hinged-blades rotor.

International audience; In this paper, we focus on extending the subspace identification to the class of linear periodically time-varying (LPTV) systems. The Lyapunov-Floquet transformation is first applied to the system’s state-space model in order to get the monodromy matrix (MM) and, thus, a necessary and sufficient condition for system stability. Then, given two successive covariance-driven Hankel matrices, the MM matrix is extracted by some calculus of a simultaneous singular value decomposition (SVD) and a least square optimization. The method is illustrated by a simulation application to the model of a hinged-blades helicopter.
