Selective laser melting (SLM) is a rapidly growing additive manufacturing (AM) process that is used to produce complex metal parts with high accuracy and repeatability. However, the SLM process is susceptible to defects, such as porosity, cracking, and surface roughness. Such types of defects can be prevented if an algorithm is able to detect them in real-time. One of those algorithms is In-situ image monitoring. This study provides an overview of the state-of-the-art insitu image monitoring techniques for SLM. These monitoring techniques include different types of camera modules like CMOS and CCD, In-situ metrology techniques (melt pool temperature, layer quality, and melt pool geometry), and various monitoring configurations. These monitoring techniques for the detection of defects in real-time solidify in-situ image monitoring as one of the promising techniques for improving the quality and robustness of the SLM parts. However, there are certain challenges associated with this study that are required to be addressed in order to develop a more advanced data analytics algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
