Combining deep learning (DL) with nanotechnology holds promise for transforming key facets of nanoscience and technology. This synergy could pave the way for groundbreaking advancements in the creation of novel materials, devices, and applications, unlocking unparalleled capabilities. In addition, monitoring psychological, emotional, and physical states is challenging, yet recent advancements in the Internet of Nano Things (IoNT), nano robot technology, and DL show promise in collecting and processing such data within home environments. Using DL techniques at the edge enables the processing of Internet of Things device data locally, preserving privacy and low latency. We present an edge IoNT system that integrates nanorobots and DL to identify diseases, generating actionable reports for medical decision-making. Explainable artificial intelligence enhances model transparency, aiding clinicians in understanding predictions. Intensive experiments have been carried out on Kvasir dataset to validate the applicability of the designed framework, where the accuracy of results demonstrated its potential for in-home healthcare management.

Purpose To investigate the effect of the Cawthorne Cooksey exercise protocol on trunk kinetic and kinematic parameters in MS patients. Methods Using a randomised controlled study design, 30 ambulatory patients with MS (aged 35–55 years) with relapsing/ remitting disease, hemiparesis, and minimal disability were recruited. Patients were split into two equal groups to undergo four weeks of vestibular rehabilitation. Group I received conventional vestibular rehabilitation along with the Cawthorne Cooksey exercise protocol, and group II (control group) received only conventional vestibular rehabilitation. Patients were assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer (average power, acceleration, and deceleration time) before and after the treatment. Results The current study found that there was a significant improvement in the trunk flexors’ average power and a decrease (enhancement) in the acceleration and deceleration times after the treatment (p < 0.05). The effect was more pronounced in group I than in group II. Conclusions Cawthorne Cooksey exercise protocol may be an effective way to help people with MS improve their dynamic trunk stability by facilitating trunk movements and muscle power.

Precision in building delineation plays a pivotal role in population data analysis, city management, policy making, and disaster management. Leveraging computer vision technologies, particularly deep learning models for semantic segmentation, has proven instrumental in achieving accurate automatic building segmentation in remote sensing applications. However, current state-of-the-art (SOTA) techniques are not optimized for precisely extracting building footprints and, specifically, boundaries of the building. This deficiency highlights the need to leverage Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data in conjunction with aerial RGB and streamlined deep learning for improved precision. This work utilizes the MapAI dataset, which includes a variety of objects beyond buildings, such as trees, electricity lines, solar panels, vehicles, and roads. These objects showcase diverse colors and structures, mirroring the rooftops in Denmark and Norway. Due to the aforementioned problems, this study modified UNet and CT-UNet to use LiDAR data and RGB images to segment buildings using Intersection Over Union (IoU) to evaluate building overlap and Boundary Intersection Over Union (BIoU) to evaluate precise building boundaries and shapes. The proposed work changes the configuration of these networks to streamline with LiDAR data for efficient segmentation. The batch data in training is augmented to improve model generalization and overcome overfitting. Batch normalization inclusion also improves overfitting. Four backbones with transfer learning are employed to enhance convergence and parameter efficiency of segmentation: ResNet50V2, DenseNet201, EfficientNetB4, and EfficientNetV2S. Test-Time Augmentation (TTA) is employed to improve the predicted mask. Experiments are performed using single and ensemble models, with and without Augmentation. The ensemble model outperforms the single model, and TTA also improves the results. LiDAR data with RGB improves the combined score (average of IoU and BIoU) by 13.33% compared to only RGB images.

Abstract Background The clinical management of patients experiencing recurrent abdominal pain resembling biliary-type, but with negative findings on conventional transabdominal ultrasound (TUS), poses a challenge. In recent years, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has emerged as a valuable tool for diagnosing gallbladder diseases. This study aims to assess the role of EUS in the evaluation of gallbladder and biliary system diseases specifically in patients with normal transabdominal ultrasonography results. Methods This study was a cross-sectional analytic study that enrolled 150 patients with any complaints related to the gallbladder and biliary system necessitating transabdominal ultrasound and endosonography in the period between February 2021 and December 2021. Results The mean age of the studied patients was 46.1 ± 10.3 years; 46.7% were males and 53.3% were females. The main complaint was right abdominal pain in 78.0%; meanwhile, 74.7% had a picture of obstructive jaundice. EUS revealed gallbladder wall thickening in 15 patients (10%), mud and/or small stones inside the gallbladder in 73 patients (48.7%), positive GB mass and/or polyp findings in 30 patients (20%), and biliary lesions such as duct strictures and/or dilatations were detected in 48 patients (32%), while transabdominal ultrasound was normal in all those patients. Conclusion Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) proves to be a valuable diagnostic modality in patients experiencing biliary-type abdominal pain, despite normal transabdominal ultrasonography results. It not only aids in the accurate diagnosis of underlying conditions but also has the potential to impact the management plan for these patients.

Developing mega structures like highways and railways, bridges, and tall buildings constructed over soft clay becomes challenging for geotechnical engineers. Soft clays are considered problematic soils as they possess high compressibility and low shear strength. There are several methods for improving in situ conditions of soft clays. This research focuses on using geogrid to improve soft soil and increase its stability under loaded square footing. A model test was developed in this study for square footing resting on soft clay to investigate the effect of uniaxial geogrid to control the soil settlement and enhance its shear strength. The results of the experimental model were compared with the analytical solution using the finite element program ABAQUS, where a good agreement was found between the computed and measured data. The second objective of the research was to focus on the parameters that increase the bearing capacity of soil and hence reduce the settlement other than the parameters used in the verification case. This was achieved by conducting parametric studies using the developed numerical model. The Parametric studies focus on the role of different parameters that affect the interaction mechanism between the soil and geogrid. These parameters included the number of geogrid layers, the first geogrid location, and the geogrid length. Also, the impact of creep settlement of reinforced soft clay was considered. It was found that placing geogrid layers at depth not less than 1.3B where, the first geogrid located at distance U = 0.7 under the footing is more appropriate for improving soft clay properties. Also, the length of geogrid should be not less than 3B to be effective in reducing the consolidation settlement of the soft clay. Moreover, the geogrid layers are ineffective in reducing the settlement resulting from creep.

AbstractHerein, a set of pyridine and pyrimidine derivatives were assessed for their impact on the cell cycle and apoptosis. Human breast cancer (MCF7), hepatocellular carcinoma (HEPG2), larynx cancer (HEP2), lung cancer (H460), colon cancers (HCT116 and Caco2), and hypopharyngeal cancer (FADU), and normal Vero cell lines were used. Compounds 8 and 14 displayed outstanding effects on the investigated cell lines and were further tested for their antioxidant activity in MCF7, H460, FADU, HEP2, HEPG2, HCT116, Caco2, and Vero cells by measuring superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde content (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), and nitric oxide (NO) content. Besides, Annexin V-FITC apoptosis detection and cell cycle DNA index using the HEPG-2 cell line were established on both compounds as well. Furthermore, compounds 8 and 14 were assessed for their EGFR kinase (Wild and T790M) inhibitory activities, revealing eligible potential. Additionally, molecular docking, ADME, and SAR studies were carried out for the investigated candidates.

Abstract Background Usually, wounds recover in four to six weeks. Wounds that take longer time than this to heal are referred to as chronic wounds. Impaired healing can be caused by several circumstances like hypoxia, microbial colonization, deficiency of blood flow, reperfusion damage, abnormal cellular reaction and deficiencies in collagen production. Treatment of wounds can be enhanced through systemic injection of the antibacterial drugs and/or other topical applications of medications. However, there are a number of disadvantages to these techniques, including the limited or insufficient medication penetration into the underlying skin tissue and the development of bacterial resistance with repeated antibiotic treatment. One of the more recent treatment options may involve using nanotherapeutics in combination with naturally occurring biological components, such as snail extracts (SE). In this investigation, chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs) were loaded with an Eobania vermiculata whole-body muscle extract. The safety of the synthesized NPs was investigated in vitro to determine if these NPs might be utilized to treat full-skin induced wounds in vivo. Results SEM and TEM images showed uniformly distributed, spherical, smooth prepared CS NPs and snail extract-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (SE-CS NPs) with size ranges of 76–81 and 91–95 nm, respectively. The zeta potential of the synthesized SE-CS NPs was − 24.5 mV, while that of the CS NPs was 25 mV. SE-CS NPs showed a remarkable, in vitro, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. Successfully, SE-CS NPs (50 mg/kg) reduced the oxidative stress marker (malondialdehyde), reduced inflammation, increased the levels of the antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and glutathione), and assisted the healing of induced wounds. SE-CS NPs (50 mg/kg) can be recommended to treat induced wounds safely. SE was composed of a collection of several wound healing bioactive components [fatty acids, amino acids, minerals and vitamins) that were loaded on CS NPs. Conclusions The nanostructure enabled bioactive SE components to pass through cell membranes and exhibit their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, accelerating the healing process of wounds. Finally, it is advised to treat rats’ wounds with SE-CS NPs. Graphical abstract

Introduction Stapes surgery was traditionally performed with the use of microscopy either through postauricular, endaural or transcanal approaches. Endoscopic stapedectomy ushered a revolution as a new technique with less complications.

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is an important pathogen that causes hospital-acquired illnesses worldwide. The biofilm-forming activity of the organism enhances its capacity to acquire significant levels of antibiotic resistance, hence necessitating the development of novel and effective antibacterial drugs. Nevertheless, nanoparticles have been documented as highly effective agents against bacterial growth and biofilm formation. So, the purpose of this work was to study the antibacterial and antibiofilm capabilities of silver nanoparticles synthesized by facile green method using curcumin (GS-AgNPs) on A. baumannii compared to the chemical method (CS-AgNPs) in vitro. Moreover, twenty-four clinical isolates of A. baumannii were collected and characterized by standard microbiological techniques. The results showed that all isolates of A. baumanii exhibited a significant degree of resistance to a wide range of antimicrobials. On the other hand, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for GS-AgNPs sample fell between 250 and 7.8 μg/ml. While the CS-AgNPs sample had MIC values that fell between 500 and 1000 µg/ml. Twenty out of 24 strains were biofilm producers. The lowest MIC of the tested AgNPs was mainly observed in the strains that produce weak biofilm. GS-AgNPs significantly inhibited the biofilm production by the tested isolates than AgNPs synthesized chemically and biofilm inhibition reached to 57.43 ± 9.50 %, and 50.57 ± 3.91 % of controls for strong producers, respectively. The results of the research suggest that GS-AgNPs demonstrate notable effectiveness as a secure and powerful antibacterial and antibiofilm agent against multidrug-resistant A. baumannii strains.

Abstract Background The aim of this study is to compare outcomes for neonates and infants with Hirschsprung’s disease undergoing a laparoscopically assisted transanal pull-through (LAPT) with those undergoing a complete transanal pull-through (TERPT) using Swenson procedure in both groups. Method Forty patients with Hirschsprung’s disease were operated between January 2018 and January 2022. Twenty patients underwent transanal endorectal pull through TERPT while the other 20 patients underwent laparoscopic assisted pull through (LAPT) using Swenson procedure (TERPT) in both groups. Age at operation, presenting symptoms, operative time complications, and degree of continence were evaluated. Bowel functions were assessed using the Cleveland Clinic Incontinence Score. Results The mean age of the patients at the time of operation were 18.9 months for the transanal group versus 21.3 months for the laparoscopic group. The mean follow-up period was 6 months, ranging from 3 to 12 months. The rate of enterocolitis occurred in 15% of cases in transanal group versus 10% of cases in the laparoscopic group. Constipation was found in 25% of cases of TERPT group versus 10% of cases in the LAPT group. The rates of normal continence (score 0:4) was 60% vs 50% for TERPT vs LAPT respectively while the rate of severe incontinence (score 15:20) was 20% vs 5% for TERPT vs LAPT respectively. Conclusion The functional outcomes after LAPT was satisfactory in term of fecal soiling compared to trans anal approach this may be due to less pelvic dissection compared to transanal pull through.
