Abstract

The alpine grasslands of the Kashmir Himalayas serve as a lifeline for the region's pastoral communities, providing the primary source of forage for their livestock. These high-altitude rangelands are not only crucial for the livelihood of these communities but also play a significant role in maintaining the ecological balance of the area. However, sustainable pastoralism in these fragile ecosystem hinges on a thorough understanding of forage availability and livestock carrying capacity. This study assesses the forage dynamics and livestock carrying capacity of these high-altitude grasslands. Through comprehensive biomass sampling across 23 strategically selected sites, we calculated an average dry matter above ground biomass yield of 5.10 metric tons per hectare, resulting in a total dry biomass weight of approximately 820,489.22 metric tons (820,489,220 kg), over the entire grassland area of 160,974 ha. Using a daily forage intake of 1.3 kg per Sheep Unit (SU) over 50 grazing days, time period which corresponds to the renewal period for new grass growth, the average carrying capacity of the rangelands was determined to be 39.08 Animal Units (AU) per hectare and the total carrying capacity was estimated as 62,78,556 SU. The current stocking rate of 4,661,800 SU utilizes about 74.21% of this Carrying capacity, leaving a surplus of 25.77% or 1,616,756 Animal Sheep Units. However, localized overgrazing in areas such as Thajwas and Mohand Marg highlights the need for targeted management practices to prevent rangeland degradation. This data is critical as it provides a baseline for understanding the potential of these rangelands to support livestock. This study underscores the importance of sustainable livestock management to optimize carrying capacity while maintaining the ecological balance of the grasslands. Abstract

ABSTRACTThe production and distribution of food is an important aspect of agricultural geography. Tracing the origin of crops is vital to ensuring future food security, especially in the context of geopolitical and climate change. Drawing on a case study of Kashmir, this article demonstrates how evidence from archaeobotany and ancient writings can be used to trace the geographies of apple domestication, cultivation and distribution. In doing so, it draws attention to the significance of trade networks; in this case those historically supported by the Silk Road.

40. Remote sensing-based analysis of land use, land cover, and land surface temperature changes in Jammu District, India.

Abstract

The study conducted in Jammu District, India, investigates land use and land cover (LULC) transformations over the past three decades using satellite data and remote sensing techniques. Analyzing data from 1990 to 2020, significant changes were observed. Agricultural land expanded by 157.76 km2 (6.71%), barren land by 151.69 km2 (6.45%), and settlements by 96.97 km2 (4.12%). However, vegetation decreased by 389.77 km2 (16.57%), while water bodies experienced minimal changes. Land Surface Temperature (LST) analysis, utilizing MODIS data (2000-2020), revealed warming trends, with temperatures ranging from 15.92°C to 42.77°C in 2010 and 14.04°C to 37.01°C in 2020. Notably, NDVI values peaked in 2020 (0.759) and were lowest in 1990 (−0.243), indicating healthier vegetation and lower surface temperatures. This inverse correlation highlights NDVI's potential as an indicator for assessing vegetation health and its impact on local temperature conditions. Man-Kendall Z statistics indicated negative trends for Tmax and Tmin, while rainfall data showed significant positive trend. Population growth, urbanization, climate change and agricultural intensification emerged as principal drivers of the LULC changes in the region. This study underscores the importance of geospatial tools in monitoring LULC changes, providing valuable insights for policymakers and planners to formulate sustainable land use planning and management strategies. Abstract

Researchers have long been trying to identify and estimate the impacts on the hydrological regime of rivers caused due to anthropogenic activities. In the present study, IHA was used to analyse the effect of dams on the flow regime of the upper and middle Narmada River. A total of 33 indicators were analysed to calculate Hydrological alteration due to dams in Narmada River. Average HA Index values of all 33 parameters are relatively higher for middle Narmada at Mandleshwar (0.86) than that of upper Narmada at Burmanghat (0.57). The average extreme water conditions have decreased both in frequency and in duration. Specifically, fewer floods and less low flow events have occurred in the post-dam period. The main purpose of this article is to identify and quantify the variations in the hydrologic regime so that the cumulative impacts of anthropogenic activities on water resources and the aquatic ecosystems may be reduced using proper water resource management strategies. Abstract

SWAT “Soil and Water Assessment Tool” model has been extensively utilized for the prioritization of watersheds / sub-watershed and to estimate sediment yield index. Arc-SWAT, an Arc-GIS extension and interface for SWAT has been employed using Arc-GIS10.2 software. Climate data (temperature and precipitation) for a ten-year time period i.e., 2006-2016 of weather station in vicinity of the study area, Land use/Land cover map (IRS LISS III P6 of 2016), and Soil map derived through “National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning of India” are the main datasets that have been utilized to extract the necessary input parameters for SWAT model. ASTER-GDEM has been used to delineate watershed outlines, generating sub-watersheds and slope map. A total of 41 sub-watersheds are delineated by selecting the appropriate threshold. Based on the post-processing, 6 sub-watersheds were placed in the very high priority category, 5 in high priority category, 12 in medium priority category, and 18 sub-watersheds in low priority category.
