This dataset comprises binaural audio examples that accompany the paper entitled "The Far-Field Equatorial Array for Binaural Rendering" published at IEEE ICASSP 2021 (DOI: 10.1109/ICASSP39728.2021.9414368). International audience; Models of sound source directivity that are based on spherical harmonics have been applied in diverse scenarios including wave-based room acoustic simulation, spatial audio, and urban sound propagation. The measurement of directivities of real-world sound sources that are not electroacoustic transducers exhibits fundamental limitations in terms of the accuracy and spatial resolution than can be achieved. Particularly if the directivity is measured only in a plane or over a limited solid angle range, a classical spherical harmonics-based representation cannot be computed. The directivity of any sound source of finite spatial extent can be represented in the farfield as a spherical wave with a complex amplitude that is angle dependent. This representation makes it straightforward to interpolate and extrapolate potentially sparse measurement data and produce a viable spherical harmonics representation that can be incorporated into the frameworks that have been proposed in the literature. We analyze the range of validity of the farfield approximation, and we demonstrate results based on publicly available directivity data for sound sources such as the human voice, musical instruments, and industrial machinery.

International audience; Spherical microphone arrays are used to capture spatial sound fields, which can then be rendered via headphones. Insight into perceptual properties of sensor self-noise is valuable in the design and construction process of such arrays. We use the Real-Time Spherical Array Renderer (ReTiSAR) to analyze the frequency-dependent white-noise-gain, i.e. propagation of wanted and unwanted signals through the processing pipeline. In this contribution, we demonstrate an instrumental evaluation for a large set of array and rendering configurations. Latter strongly influence the rendered spectral balance and overall level of spatially uniformly distributed self-noise. Additionally, a dependency on head rotation yielding a change in the reproduced coloration is confirmed for the case of spatially non-uniform noise.

The so called ”Parametric Audio” effect is a way to create highly directional audible sound using ultrasonic carrier waves. It stems from an acoustical phenomena where two high frequency waves at high intensity will interfere and generate intermodulation tones due to non-linear effects in the wave-propagation. Most analytical models apply a second order approximation to predict the level of the au- dible sound. With a second order approximation it is not possible to compensate distortions in the audible sound caused by higher order non-linear effects. Higher order distortions in the audible sound were observed anecdo- tally by the authors, raising the question if they as well could be compensated. This paper describes a set of measurements of the am- plitudes of the harmonics of a bifrequency plane wave, and compares the measured results with a simple theo- retical model. The measured results indicate that there is significant nonlinear distortion in the electrical and/or mechanical subsystems. Even if a model is developed to predict and compensate for said distortion the model would be tied to a specific amplifier and transducer com- bination, with very limited real-life applicability.
