1. Low Mass Contact Binaries: Orbital Stability at Extreme Low Mass Ratios

Abstract: With the ever-increasing number of light curve solutions of contact binary systems increasing number of potential bright red nova progenitors are being reported. There remains, however, only one confirmed event. In the present study we undertake a comprehensive review of orbital stability of contact binary systems considering the effects of the stellar internal composition (metallicity) and age on the evolution of the gyration radius and its effect on the instability mass ratio of contact binaries. We find that both metallicity and age have an independent effect on orbital stability with metal poor and older systems being more stable. The combined effects of age and metallicity are quite profound such that for most systems with primaries of solar mass or greater which are halfway or more through the main sequence lifespans have instability mass ratio at levels where the secondary component would be below the hydrogen fusion mass limit. We find that from the currently available solutions we cannot confidently assign any system as unstable. Although we identify 8 potential red nova progenitors all have methodological or astrophysical concerns which lower our confidence in designating any of them as potential merger candidates., Comment: 9 Pages, 3 Figures and 3 Tables. 2. AIDOVECL: AI-generated Dataset of Outpainted Vehicles for Eye-level Classification and Localization

Abstract: Image labeling is a critical bottleneck in the development of computer vision technologies, often constraining the potential of machine learning models due to the time-intensive nature of manual annotations. This work introduces a novel approach that leverages outpainting to address the problem of annotated data scarcity by generating artificial contexts and annotations, significantly reducing manual labeling efforts. We apply this technique to a particularly acute challenge in autonomous driving, urban planning, and environmental monitoring: the lack of diverse, eye-level vehicle images in desired classes. Our dataset comprises AI-generated vehicle images obtained by detecting and cropping vehicles from manually selected seed images, which are then outpainted onto larger canvases to simulate varied real-world conditions. The outpainted images include detailed annotations, providing high-quality ground truth data. Advanced outpainting techniques and image quality assessments ensure visual fidelity and contextual relevance. Augmentation with outpainted vehicles improves overall performance metrics by up to 8\% and enhances prediction of underrepresented classes by up to 20\%. This approach, exemplifying outpainting as a self-annotating paradigm, presents a solution that enhances dataset versatility across multiple domains of machine learning. 3. Polarization position angle standard stars: a reassessment of $\theta$ and its variability for seventeen stars based on a decade of observations

Abstract: Observations of polarization position angle ($\theta$) standards made from 2014 to 2023 with the High Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI) and other HIPPI-class polarimeters in both hemispheres are used to investigate their variability. Multi-band data were first used to thoroughly recalibrate the instrument performance by bench-marking against carefully selected literature data. A novel Co-ordinate Difference Matrix (CDM) approach - which combines pairs of points - was then used to amalgamate monochromatic ($g^\prime$ band) observations from many observing runs and re-determine $\theta$ for 17 standard stars. The CDM algorithm was then integrated into a fitting routine and used to establish the impact of stellar variability on the measured position angle scatter. The approach yields variability detections for stars on long time scales that appear stable over short runs. The best position angle standards are $\ell$ Car, $o$ Sco, HD 154445, HD 161056 and $\iota^1$ Sco which are stable to $\leq$ 0.123$^\circ$. Position angle variability of 0.27-0.82$^\circ$, significant at the 3-$\sigma$ level, is found for 5 standards, including the Luminous Blue Variable HD 160529 and all but one of the other B/A-type supergiants (HD 80558, HD 111613, HD 183143 and 55 Cyg), most of which also appear likely to be variable in polarization magnitude ($p$) - there is no preferred orientation for the polarization in these objects, which are all classified as $\alpha$ Cygni variables. Despite this we make six key recommendations for observers - relating to data acquisition, processing and reporting - that will allow them to use these standards to achieve $<$ 0.1$^\circ$ precision in the telescope position angle with similar instrumentation, and allow data sets to be combined more accurately., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, 17 tables, 4 appendices; accepted to MNRAS. Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 6. Evidence of variable range hopping in the Zintl phase EuIn2P2

Abstract: We report a comprehensive characterization of the magnetic, electrical transport, spectral, and thermal properties of single-crystalline Zintl-type material EuIn2P2. The compound crystallizes with a hexagonal unit cell (space group P63/mmc) and orders magnetically at TC=24K with the Eu magnetic moments aligned ferromagnetically within the ab plane but tilted alternately along the c-axis direction. The effective and saturation magnetic moments agree with the theoretical values expected for the Eu2+ ion. For a range of several tens of kelvins above 40K, the electrical transport of EuIn2P2 is dominated by short-range magnetic interactions. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity has been modelled in terms of variable-range hopping. Another indication of the latter scenario seems to be the observation for EuIn2P2 of a quadratic dependence of the negative magnetoresistance on the magnetic field strength and the scaled magnetization. The temperature dependence of Raman band position and FWHM, as well as phonon lifetime, confirms the presence of the distinctive regions observed in transport and magnetic studies.

7. Experimental Evaluation of Machine Learning Models for Goal-oriented Customer Service Chatbot with Pipeline Architecture

Abstract: Integrating machine learning (ML) into customer service chatbots enhances their ability to understand and respond to user queries, ultimately improving service performance. However, they may appear artificial to some users and affecting customer experience. Hence, meticulous evaluation of ML models for each pipeline component is crucial for optimizing performance, though differences in functionalities can lead to unfair comparisons. In this paper, we present a tailored experimental evaluation approach for goal-oriented customer service chatbots with pipeline architecture, focusing on three key components: Natural Language Understanding (NLU), dialogue management (DM), and Natural Language Generation (NLG). Our methodology emphasizes individual assessment to determine optimal ML models. Specifically, we focus on optimizing hyperparameters and evaluating candidate models for NLU (utilizing BERT and LSTM), DM (employing DQN and DDQN), and NLG (leveraging GPT-2 and DialoGPT). The results show that for the NLU component, BERT excelled in intent detection whereas LSTM was superior for slot filling. For the DM component, the DDQN model outperformed DQN by achieving fewer turns, higher rewards, as well as greater success rates. For NLG, the large language model GPT-2 surpassed DialoGPT in BLEU, METEOR, and ROUGE metrics. These findings aim to provide a benchmark for future research in developing and optimizing customer service chatbots, offering valuable insights into model performance and optimal hyperparameters.

8. On the Optimal Performance of Distributed Cell-Free Massive MIMO with LoS Propagation

Abstract: In this study, we revisit the performance analysis of distributed beamforming architectures in dense user-centric cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems in line-of-sight (LoS) scenarios. By incorporating a recently developed optimal distributed beamforming technique, called the team minimum mean square error (TMMSE) technique, we depart from previous studies that rely on suboptimal distributed beamforming approaches for LoS scenarios. Supported by extensive numerical simulations that follow 3GPP guidelines, we show that such suboptimal approaches may often lead to significant underestimation of the capabilities of distributed architectures, particularly in the presence of strong LoS paths. Considering the anticipated ultra-dense nature of cell-free mMIMO networks and the consequential high likelihood of strong LoS paths, our findings reveal that the team MMSE technique may significantly contribute in narrowing the performance gap between centralized and distributed architectures.

9. Magnetocaloric properties of single-crystalline Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$

Abstract: The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in single-crystalline Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ was studied over broad temperature ranges and magnetic field intervals, with the magnetic field oriented parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic $\textit{c}$-axis in the orthorhombic Ca$_5$Ga$_2$As$_6$-type unit cell of the crystals. The compound is an antiferromagnetic insulator with two subsequent magnetic phase transitions at $T_{N1} \approx$ 14.0 K and $T_{N2} \approx$ 7.1 K. The compound was found to exhibit both normal and inverse MCE. Furthermore, due to substantial magnetic anisotropy, it also exhibits a rotational MCE. For conventional MCE, the maximum value of the isothermal entropy change $\Delta S_m$ is -4.7(1) J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ at 15(1) K for a magnetic field change of 5 T, independent of the field direction. The relative cooling power (RCP) is also almost identical for both directions, and equals 81(1) J kg$^{-1}$ for a magnetic field change of 5 T. The most significant rotational MCE was observed at about 11 K, with a maximum $\Delta S_R$ value of 2.4(1) J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and RCP = 17.5(6) J kg$^{-1}$ for a magnetic field change of 4 T.

Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

11. Photometric and Spectroscopic study of Ten Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary Systems: Orbital Stability, O'Connell Effect and Infra-red Calcium Line Filling

Abstract: Low mass ratio contact binary systems are more likely to have unstable orbits and potentially merge. In addition, such systems exhibit characteristics such as starspots and high energy emissions (UV) suggestive of chromospheric and magnetic activity. Light curve modelling of ten contact binary systems is reported. All were found to be of extreme low mass ratio ranging from 0.122 to 0.24 and three were found to be potentially unstable and possible merger candidates. Filling of the infrared Calcium absorption lines is a marker of increased chromospheric activity. We use the available LAMOST spectra along with matched standard spectra (broadened for rotation) to measure the excess filling of the central core depression flux of the two main infrared Calcium absorption lines at 8542 and 8662 angstroms. We find that all reported contact binaries have excess filling of the core flux in the infrared Calcium lines. Three of the systems reported were also observed by the GALEX mission and we find that all three have features of excess ultraviolet emissions further adding evidence for increased chromospheric activity in low mass ratio contact binaries. Analysis of both orbital stability and absorption line filling is dependent on the determination of geometric and absolute parameters from light curve modelling. Not an insignificant number of contact binary light curves exhibit the O'Connell effect, usually attributed to starspots. 15. Microscopic Investigation of Ground State Properties and Shape Evolution in Osmium Isotopes

Abstract: The present study focuses on investigating the shape evolution of neutron-rich even-even Osmium (Os) transitional nuclei within the range of neutron number N = 82 to N = 190. The investigation is conducted using density-dependent meson-nucleon and point-coupling models within the framework of the covariant density functional theory (CDFT). Additionally, the results obtained from the CDFT calculations are compared with those obtained using the relativistic mean-field model with a non-linear meson-nucleon interaction. The potential energy curve for Os isotopes (ranging from $^{158}$Os to $^{260}$Os) is analyzed in order to identify phase shape transitions, such as oblate-spherical-prolate. Furthermore, ground state bulk properties are calculated to gain insights into the structure of Os isotopes. The self-consistent calculations reveal a clear shape transition in the even-even Os isotopes, and overall, good agreement is observed among the different models employed as well as with the available experimental data., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. Abstract: We present an extension-based approach for computing and verifying preferences in an abstract argumentation system. Although numerous argumentation semantics have been developed previously for identifying acceptable sets of arguments from an argumentation framework, there is a lack of justification behind their acceptability based on implicit argument preferences. Preference-based argumentation frameworks allow one to determine what arguments are justified given a set of preferences. Our research considers the inverse of the standard reasoning problem, i.e., given an abstract argumentation framework and a set of justified arguments, we compute what the possible preferences over arguments are. Furthermore, there is a need to verify (i.e., assess) that the computed preferences would lead to the acceptable sets of arguments. This paper presents a novel approach and algorithm for exhaustively computing and enumerating all possible sets of preferences (restricted to three identified cases) for a conflict-free set of arguments in an abstract argumentation framework. We prove the soundness, completeness and termination of the algorithm. The research establishes that preferences are determined using an extension-based approach after the evaluation phase (acceptability of arguments) rather than stated beforehand. In this work, we focus our research study on grounded, preferred and stable semantics. We show that the complexity of computing sets of preferences is exponential in the number of arguments, and thus, describe an approximate approach and algorithm to compute the preferences. Furthermore, we present novel algorithms for verifying (i.e., assessing) the computed preferences. We provide details of the implementation of the algorithms (source code has been made available), various experiments performed to evaluate the algorithms and the analysis of the results.

Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Reliable wireless communications play an important role in the automotive industry as it helps to enhance current use cases and enable new ones such as connected autonomous driving, platooning, cooperative maneuvering, teleoperated driving, and smart navigation. These and other use cases often rely on specific quality of service (QoS) levels for communication. Recently, the area of predictive quality of service (QoS) has received a great deal of attention as a key enabler to forecast communication quality well enough in advance. However, predicting QoS in a reliable manner is a notoriously difficult task. In this paper, we evaluate ML tree-ensemble methods to predict QoS in the range of minutes with data collected from a cellular test network. We discuss radio environment characteristics and we showcase how these can be used to improve ML performance and further support the uptake of ML in commercial networks. Specifically, we use the correlations of the measurements coming from the radio environment by including information of prior vehicles to enhance the prediction of the target vehicles. Moreover, we are extending prior art by showing how longer prediction horizons can be supported.

36. Rapid polarization variations in the O4 supergiant $\zeta$ Puppis

Abstract: We present time-series linear-polarization observations of the bright O4 supergiant $\zeta$ Puppis. The star is found to show polarization variation on timescales of around an hour and longer. Many of the observations were obtained contemporaneously with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) photometry. We find that the polarization varies on similar timescales to those seen in the TESS light-curve. The previously reported 1.78-day photometric periodicity is seen in both the TESS and polarization data. The amplitude ratio of photometry to polarization is ~9 for the periodic component and the polarization variation is oriented along position angle ~70 deg-160 deg. Higher-frequency stochastic variability is also seen in both datasets with an amplitude ratio of ~19 and no preferred direction. We model the polarization expected for a rotating star with bright photospheric spots and find that models that fit the photometric variation produce too little polarization variation to explain the observations. We suggest that the variable polarization is more likely the result of scattering from the wind, with corotating interaction regions producing the periodic variation and a clumpy outflow producing the stochastic component. Abstract: Despite its remoteness from other continents, the Antarctic region cannot escape the aftermath of human activities as it is highly influenced by anthropogenic impacts that occur both in the regional and global context. Contamination by microplastics, mostly caused by the improper disposal of plastic waste, is widely recognised as a serious environmental threat due to its ubiquity. In recent years, most researchers have focused on microplastic pollution in the marine ecosystem of Antarctica, while pollution in the terrestrial environment continues to be neglected. This study was conducted to investigate the ability of Antarctic soil bacteria to use polypropylene (PP) microplastics as the sole carbon source. Bushnell Haas (BH) medium inoculated with bacteria and supplemented PP-microplastics as the sole carbon source was used in the utilisation test. In this study, the growth response of Dermacoccus sp. strain AYDL3 was assessed after exposure to PP-microplastics in a basal medium for 40 days. The weight reduction of the polymer was determined to further support the growth response. The highest and lowest weight loss percentages were observed on day 20 (23.0%) and day 10 (7.75%), respectively. Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were used to confirm the utilisation of PP-microplastics by strain AYDL3. Results indicate that the soil bacteria possess a mechanism for breaking down microplastics allowing them to utilise plastics as energy sources without any pre-treatment. This emphasises the significance of these soil bacteria to adapt and subsequently manage the plastic fragments in the soil in the future.
