Whereas inhalation exposure to organic contaminants can negatively impact human health, knowledge of their spatial variability in the ambient atmosphere remains limited. We analyzed the extracts of passive air samplers deployed at 119 unique sites in Southern Canada between 2019 and 2022 for 353 organic vapors. Hierarchical clustering of the obtained data set revealed four archetypes of spatial concentration variability in the outdoor atmosphere, which are indicative of common sources and similar atmospheric dispersion behavior. "Point Source" signatures are characterized by elevated concentration in the vicinity of major release locations. A "Population" signature applies to compounds whose air concentrations are highly correlated with population density, and is associated with emissions from consumer products. The "Water Source" signature applies to substances with elevated levels in the vicinity of water bodies from which they evaporate. Another group of compounds displays a "Uniform" signature, indicative of a lack of major sources within the study area. We illustrate how such a data set, and the derived spatial patterns, can be applied to support the identification of sources, the quantification of atmospheric emissions, the modeling of air quality, and the investigation of potential inequities in inhalation exposure.

The octanol-air partition ratio (K OA ) is a fundamental property used for screening chemicals for concern, depending on their potential to bioaccumulate and harm living systems. With millions of chemicals used in commerce, unfortunately, less than 800 compounds currently have experimentally measured K OA values due to limitations in traditional measurement techniques. We aimed to develop a direct gas chromatography retention time (GC-RT) method using a custom-packed column, with octanol as the stationary phase, for rapidly measuring K OA . We installed the column into a GC-mass spectrometry system and isothermally measured retention times of 15 volatile organic compounds. We calculated K OA values at experimental temperatures from the retention times and extrapolated the results to values at 25 °C using the Van't Hoff equation. Our directly measured log K OA values at 25 °C spanned 3.66 log units (0.820-4.48). Except for alcohols, our measured values agree with literature log K OA values (root mean square error, RMSE = 0.50). The discrepancy probably arose from differences in how well our method versus the literature methods capture measurement artifacts, specifically, gas-phase adsorption to the octanol phase and hydrogen bonding interactions. Oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) is a source of atmospheric emission for polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), compounds known to have toxic effects on humans. Estimating emissions and assessing the chemical fate of PACs requires measured or predicted physical-chemical properties such as Henry's law constants (H), that can be used to predict chemical transfer into the atmosphere. OSPW is a complex water-based mixture that is highly variable in composition and nature and contains both organic and inorganic ions. This study uses COSMO-RS solvation theory to estimate and compare Henry's law constants for a set of PACs in both water and theoretically modelled OSPW, to assess the expected deviation that occurs from pure water H values due to the ionic content within OSPW. Experimental measurements of Henry's law constants for PACs in pure water and OSPW using EVA-coated passive dosing and sampler beads were also made in support of our theoretical predictions. For the theory work, OSPW composition data for the Athabasca oil sands in Alberta were used to model a simulated OSPW environment with realistic sodium, chloride, fluoride, sulfate, potassium, bicarbonate, and naphthenic acid concentrations. Theory results indicate that the combined presence of these ions at OSPW concentrations has a negligible effect on H values, causing on average a 3% or 0.014 log unit deviation. By comparison, temperature has a much larger influence on H values, with estimations showing an average 0.20 log unit increase for a 5 °C increase in temperature. The experimental results demonstrate that Henry's law constants can be accurately and precisely measured with this technique in pure water but with less precision in OSPW. The inhalation of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) is a major contributor to adverse health effects from air pollution worldwide. An important toxicity pathway is thought to follow oxidative stress from the formation of exogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body, a proxy of which is oxidative potential (OP). As redox-active transition metals and organic species are important drivers of OP in urban environments, we investigate how seasonal changes in emission sources, aerosol chemical composition, acidity, and metal dissolution influence OP dynamics. The global increase in electronic waste (e-waste) has led to a rise in informal recycling, emitting hazardous heavy metals (HMs) that threaten human health and ecosystems. This study presents the first comprehensive assessment of HM levels in dry deposition and soils at proximity of forty (40) informal e-waste recycling sites across Pakistan, between September 2020 to December 2021. Findings reveal that Zn (1410), Pb (410) and Mn (231) exhibited the higher mean deposition fluxes (μg/m 2 .day), derived from air samples, particularly in Karachi. Similarly, soils showed higher mean concentrations (μg/g dw) of Mn (477), Cu (514) and Pb (172) in Faisalabad, Lahore, and Karachi, respectively. HMs concentrations were found higher in winter or autumn and lower in summer. In addition, HM levels were significantly (p = 0.05) higher at recycling sites compared to background sites year-round, highlighting the e-waste recycling operations as the major source of their emissions. The I geo index indicated moderate to extremely contaminated levels of Cu, Pb, Cd, and Ni in Karachi, Lahore and Gujranwala. Ingestion was found as a leading human exposure route, followed by dermal and inhalation exposure, with Pb posing the greatest health risk. The Cumulative Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) model suggested moderate to low cancer risks for workers. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), released from petrogenic, pyrogenic or diagenetic sources (degradation of wood materials), are of global concern due to their adverse effects, and potential for long-range transport. While dissolved PAHs have been frequently reported in the literature, there has been no consistent approach of sampling across water bodies. Passive samplers from the AQUA/GAPS-MONET initiative were deployed at 46 sites (28 marine and 18 freshwater), and analyzed for 28 PAHs and six polycyclic musks (PCMs) centrally. Freely dissolved PAH concentrations were dominated by phenanthrene (mean concentration 1500 pg L -1 ; median 530 pg L -1 ) and other low molecular weight compounds. Greatest concentrations of phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene were typically from the same sites, mostly in Europe and North America. Of the PCMs, only galaxolide (72% of samples) and tonalide (61%) were regularly detected, and were significantly cross-correlated. Benchmarking of PAHs relative to penta- and hexachlorobenzene confirmed that the most remote sites (Arctic, Antarctic, and mountain lakes) displayed below average PAH concentrations. Concentrations of 11 of 28 PAHs, galaxolide and tonalide were positively correlated ( P < 0.05) with population density within a radius of 5 km of the sampling site. Characteristic PAH ratios gave conflicting results, likely reflecting multiple PAH sources and postemission changes.

The high environmental concentrations, persistence, and toxicity of synthetic musk compounds (SMCs) necessitate a better grasp of their fate in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To investigate the importance of WWTPs as pathways of SMCs to the environment, air and wastewater samples were collected at four WWTPs in Ontario, Canada. Polycyclic musks (PCMs) were present at higher concentrations than nitro musks (NMs) and macrocyclic musks (MCMs). Three PCMs [galaxolide (HHCB), tonalide (AHTN), and iso-E super (OTNE)] were the most abundant compounds (0.30-680 ng/m 3 in air, 0.40-15 μg/L in influent, and 0.007-6.0 μg/L in effluent). Analyses of multiyear data suggest that risk management measures put in place have been effective in reducing the release of many SMCs into the environment. The highest removal efficiency, up to almost 100% of some SMCs, was observed for the plant with the longest solid retention time. A fugacity-based model was established to simulate the transport and fate of SMCs in the WWTP, and good agreement was obtained between the measured and modeled values. These findings indicate that the levels of certain SMCs discharged into the atmospheric and aquatic environments were substantial, potentially resulting in exposure to both humans and wildlife.

Airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives are of particular concern for population health due to their abundance and toxicity via inhalation. Lung toxicity testing includes exposing lung epithelial cell lines to PAHs in a culture medium containing inorganic species, lipids, proteins, and other biochemicals where the cell response is influenced among others by the toxic chemical accessibility in the medium. While inhalation bioaccessibility of PAHs and other toxicants was previously studied in surrogate lung fluids, studies measuring bioaccessibility in cell culture media are rare. In this work, a method was developed to characterize PAH bioaccessibility in a culture medium used for mouse lung epithelial (FE1) cells. Further, the optimised method was tested using commercially available standard reference material of urban particulate matter (PM) as well as polyurethane foam passive air samplers (PUF-PAS). The method provided a high precision and recovery of analytes, indicating no losses during sample processing and analysis. PAHs had non-linear concentration-responses, with the culture medium approaching saturation with PM concentration of 500 μg mL -1 . The results showed that phenanthrene, a 3-ring PAH, was significantly more bioaccessible than ≥4-ring congeners in the culture medium (up to ∼2.5 folds; p < 0.05). Finally, using pre-deployed PUF-PAS from a residential and an industrial site, five PAHs were found in the culture medium, including naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, and pyrene. High global plastic production volumes have led to the widespread presence of bisphenol compounds in human living and working environments. The most common bisphenol, bisphenol A (BPA), despite being endocrine disruptive and estrogenic, is still not fully banned worldwide, leading to continued human exposure via particles in air, dust, and surfaces in both outdoor and indoor environments. While its abundance is well documented, few studies have addressed the chemical transformations of BPA, the properties of its reactive products, and their toxicity. Here, the first gas-surface multiphase ozonolysis experiment of BPA thin films, at a constant ozone mixing ratio of 100 ppb, was performed in a flow tube for periods up to 24 h. Three transformation products involving the addition of 1, 2, and 3 oxygen atoms to the molecule were identified by LC-ESI-HRMS analyses. Exposure of indoor air to thin BPA surface films and BPA-containing thermal paper over periods of days validated the flow tube experiments, demonstrating the rapid nature of this multiphase ozonolysis reaction at atmospherically relevant ozone levels. Multiple transformation pathways are proposed that are likely applicable to not only BPA but also emerging commercial bisphenol products.

The areal distributions of the soil organochlorine pesticide (OCP) levels were investigated at adjacent and surrounding sites of the obsolete pesticide stockpile warehouse in Kocaeli, Türkiye. OCP levels in soil at neighboring sampling locations (positioned at 0.4 to 3 km from the stockpile) varied from 0.4 to 9 µg/kg and 4.2 to 2226 µg/kg (dry weight) for ΣHCHs and ΣDDXs, respectively. Levels at adjacent locations (positioned within 20 m from the stockpile) were considerably higher, varying from 74 to 39,619 µg/kg and 1592 to 30,419 µg/kg for ΣHCHs and ΣDDXs, respectively. Levels of OCPs dropped abruptly with the horizontal distance from the stockpile and had different transect profiles. The enantiomer fractions (EFs) near the stockpile range from 0.494 to 0.521, 0.454 to 0.515, and 0.483 to 0.533 for α-HCH, o,p'-DDT, and o,p'-DDD, respectively. These near-racemic EFs suggested that observed soil OCP levels were mainly influenced by recent emissions from the stockpile. A comparison of OCP compositions observed in the soil at the present study with the technical HCHs and DDTs revealed that the material in the stockpile primarily contains byproducts that were discarded during DDT and Lindane production at the adjacent plant instead of their technical mixtures., (© 2023. The adverse health effects of air pollution around the world have been associated with the inhalation of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ). Such outcomes are thought to be related to the induction of oxidative stress due to the excess formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The ability of airborne chemicals to deplete antioxidants and to form ROS is known as oxidative potential (OP). Here we studied the influence of aerosol acidity and organic ligands on the solubility of transition metals, in particular iron (Fe) and copper (Cu), and on the OP of PM 2.5 from Canadian National Air Pollution Surveillance urban sites in Toronto, Vancouver, and Hamilton. Using chemical assays and model simulations of the lung redox chemistry, we quantified ROS formation in the lung lining fluid, targeting superoxide anion (O 2 •- ), hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), and hydroxyl radical ( • OH), as well as the PM 2.5 redox potential (RP). Experimental • ) showed high correlations with RP and model-predicted ROS metrics. Both aerosol acidity and oxalate content enhanced the solubility of transition metals, with oxalate showing a stronger association. While experimental OP metrics were primarily associated with species of primary origin such as elemental carbon, Fe, and Cu, model-predicted ROS were associated with secondary processes including proton- and ligand-mediated dissolution of Fe. Model simulations showed that water-soluble Cu was the main contributor to O OH ) showed high correlations with RP and model-predicted ROS metrics. Both aerosol acidity and oxalate content enhanced the solubility of transition metals, with oxalate showing a stronger association. The movement of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) through linked aquatic-terrestrial food webs is not well understood. Tree swallows ( Tachycineta bicolor ) in such systems may be exposed to PFAS from multiple abiotic and/or biotic compartments. We show from fatty acid signatures and carbon stable isotopes that tree swallow nestlings in southwestern Ontario fed on both terrestrial and aquatic macroinvertebrates. The PFAS profiles of air, terrestrial invertebrates, and swallows were dominated by perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). Short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) were largely restricted to air, surface water, and sediment, and long-chain PFAAs were mainly found in aquatic invertebrates and tree swallows. PFOS, multiple long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids [perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA)] and perfluorooctane sulfonamide precursors were estimated to bioaccumulate from air to tree swallows. PFOS bioaccumulated from air to terrestrial invertebrates, and PFOS, PFDA, and perfluorooctane sulfonamidoacetic acids (FOSAAs) bioaccumulated from water to aquatic invertebrates. PFOS showed biomagnification from both terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates to tree swallows, and PFDA and FOSAAs were also biomagnified from aquatic invertebrates to tree swallows. The movement of PFAS through aquatic-terrestrial food webs appears congener- and compartment-specific, challenging the understanding of PFAS exposure routes for multiple species involved in these food webs.

A mapping study targeting emissions of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) from an oil sands tailings pond was undertaken in the Athabasca Oil sands Region (AOSR). Ten passive air samplers comprising polyurethane foam (PUF) disks were deployed around the perimeter of Suncor Tailings Pond 2/3 for a five-week period to generate time-integrated concentrations in air for PACs, which included ∑unsubstituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ∑alkylated PAHs (alk-PAHs), and ∑dibenzothiophenes (DBTs) (both unsubstituted and alkylated). Concentrations in air ranged from 13 to 70, 220-970, and 30-210 ng/m 3 , respectively, and were elevated in samplers downwind of the tailings pond. PAC emissions to air from the pond were estimated using only the air-side concentration information by applying a simplified Gaussian dispersion model and found to be 896 μg/m 2 /day. ∑alk-PAHs and ∑DBTs had the highest contribution to the total PAC fluxes (79% and 16%, respectively). This flux estimate for PACs is equivalent to 460 kg on an annual basis and 35 000 kg/year when scaled to represent all tailings ponds in the region. The results generally agree with fluxes estimated from coupled high volume air sampling data and tailings pond water concentrations from the same field study but which are complicated due to uncertainties associated with the use of pure water Henry's Law values for tailings pond water as well as the potential for surface oily films on the tailings ponds to impact water-air exchange of PACs. Halomethoxybenzenes are pervasive in the atmosphere at concentration levels that exceed, often by an order of magnitude, those of the persistent organic pollutants with which they share the attributes of persistence and potential for long-range transport, bioaccumulation, and toxic effects. Long ignored by environmental chemists because of their predominantly natural origin-namely, synthesis by terrestrial wood-rotting fungi, marine algae, and invertebrates-knowledge of their environmental pathways remains limited. Through measuring the spatial and seasonal variability of four halomethoxybenzenes in air and precipitation and performing complementary environmental fate simulations, we present evidence that these compounds undergo continental-scale transport in the atmosphere, which they enter largely by evaporation from water. This also applies to halomethoxybenzenes originating in terrestrial environments, such as drosophilin A methyl ether, which reach aquatic environments with runoff, possibly in the form of their phenolic precursors. Our findings contribute substantially to the comprehension of sources and fate of halomethoxybenzenes, illuminating their widespread atmospheric dispersal.

Trace metals, as constituents of ambient air, can have impacts on human and environmental health. The Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling (GAPS) and GAPS Megacities (GAPS-MC) networks investigated trace metals in the air at 51 global locations by deploying polyurethane foam disk passive air samplers (PUF-PAS) for periods of 3-12 months. Aluminum and iron exhibited the highest concentrations in air ( x̅ = 3400 and 4630 ng/m 3 , respectively), with notably elevated values at a rural site in Argentina thought to be impacted by resuspended soil. Urban sites had the highest levels of toxic Pb and Cd, with enrichment factors suggesting primarily anthropogenic influences. High levels of As at rural sites were also observed. Elevated trace metal concentrations in cities are associated with local emissions and higher PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations. Brake and tire wear-associated metals Sb, Cu, and Zn are significantly correlated and elevated at urban locations relative to those at background sites. These data demonstrate the versatility of PUF-PAS for measuring trace metals and other particle-associated pollutants in ambient air in a cost-effective and simple manner. The data presented here will serve as a global baseline for assessing future changes in ambient air associated with industrialization, urbanization, and population growth.

Air pollution is one of the leading causes of overall mortality globally. Cooking emissions are a major source of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ). However, studies on their potential perturbations on the nasal microbiota as well as their association with respiratory health are lacking. This pilot study aims to assess the environmental air quality among occupational cooks and its associations with nasal microbiota and respiratory symptoms. A total of 20 cooks (exposed) and 20 unexposed controls (mainly office workers), were recruited in Singapore from 2019 to 2021. Information on sociodemographic factors, cooking methods, and self-reported respiratory symptoms were collected using a questionnaire. Personal PM 2.5 concentrations and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were measured using portable sensors and filter samplers. DNA was extracted from nasal swabs and sequenced using 16s sequencing. Alpha-diversity and beta-diversity were calculated, and between-group variation analysis of species was performed. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between exposure groups and self-reported respiratory symptoms. Higher daily mean PM 2.5 (P = 2 × 10 -7 ) and environmental ROS exposure (P = 3.25 × 10 -7 ) were observed in the exposed group. Alpha diversity of the nasal microbiota between the two groups was not significantly different. However, beta diversity was significantly different (unweighted UniFrac P = 1.11 × 10-5, weighted UniFrac P = 5.42 × 10 -6 ) between the two exposure groups. In addition, certain taxa of bacteria were slightly more abundant in the exposed group compared to unexposed controls. There were no significant associations between the exposure groups and self-reported respiratory symptoms. Since the phase-out of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), large amounts of alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) have been introduced to the market. Due to their persistence and toxicity, halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) have become a concern for the ecosystem and human health. However, there remains limited assessment of the atmospheric loadings, sources, and environmental fate of HFRs in Lake Ontario, which receives urban-related inputs and cumulative chemical inputs from the upstream Great Lakes from Canada and the United States. We combined long-term measurements with a modified multimedia model based on site-specific environmental parameters from Lake Ontario to understand the trends and fate of HFRs. All HFRs were detected in the air, precipitation, lake trout, and herring gull egg samples throughout the sampling periods. General decreasing trends were found for PBDEs, while the temporal trends for AHFRs were not clear. Physical-chemical properties and emissions significantly influence the levels, profiles, and trends. Using the probabilistic modeling, HFR concentrations in lake water and sediment were predicted to be close to the measurement, suggesting a good performance for the modified model. The loadings from tributaries and wastewater effluent were the primary input pathways. Transformations in the water and sedimentation were estimated to be the dominant output pathway for the three HFRs.

Given the considerable financial and logistical resources supporting long-term monitoring for air pollutants, and the use of these data for performance evaluation of mitigation measures, it is important to account for contributions from primary versus secondary sources. We demonstrate a simple approach for using open source Global land cover raster data from the National Mapping Organization from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan to assess local source inputs for air measurements of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs)-polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides-reported under the Global atmospheric passive sampling (GAPS) Network at 119 locations for the time period 2005-2014. The land cover composition within a 10 km radius around the GAPS sites was identified to create source impact indicator (SII) vectors to quantify and rank the remoteness of the sites from human infrastructure. Using principal component analysis, three SII vectors were established to rank sites by impact of (i) general infrastructure/remoteness, (ii) urban infrastructure, and (iii) agricultural infrastructure. General infrastructure describes the combined effects of settlements and agricultural infrastructure. We found significant correlations ( p < 0.05) between POP concentrations in air and specific SIIs. PCB levels in air had a statistically significant correlation to the SII ranking urban impacts around the sampling sites, while Endosulfan I, Endosulfan II, and Endosulfan sulfate had a statistically significant correlation with SII ranking agricultural impacts. The complete GAPS data set from 2004-2014 (1040 samples at 119 locations) was standardized based on the SII rankings to assess the global temporal trends of legacy POPs. SIIs were incorporated in the multiple regression analysis to determine global halving times. This includes short-term monitoring data from 79 locations that were previously excluded. Furthermore, the SII approach allows the integration of global monitoring data from different studies for broader global temporal trend analysis. This ability to link the results of independent and small-scale studies can enhance temporal trend analysis in support of the larger scale initiatives, such as inter alia, the Global Monitoring Plan and Effectiveness Evaluation of the Stockholm Convention in the case of POPs. Chronic exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution is linked to adverse human health impacts worldwide, and in children, these include increased respiratory symptoms, reduced cognitive and academic performance, and absences from school. African children are exposed to high levels of air pollution from aging diesel and gasoline second-hand vehicles, dusty roads, trash burning, and solid-fuel combustion for cooking. There is a need for more empirical evidence on the impact of air pollutants on schoolchildren in most countries of Africa. Therefore, we conducted a scoping review on schoolchildren's exposure to indoor and outdoor PM 2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm and PM 10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm) in Africa. Following PRISMA guidelines, our search strategy yielded 2975 records, of which eight peer-reviewed articles met our selection criteria and were considered in the final analysis. We also analyzed satellite data on PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels in five African regions from 1990 to 2019 and compared schoolchildren's exposure to PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels in Africa with available data from the rest of the world. The findings showed that schoolchildren in Africa are frequently exposed to PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels exceeding the recommended World Health Organization air quality guidelines. We conclude with a list of recommendations and strategies to reduce air pollution exposure in African schools. Education can help to produce citizens who are literate in environmental science and policy. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are recognized as pollutants of global concern, but so far, information on the trends of legacy POPs in the waters of the world has been missing due to logistical, analytical, and financial reasons. Passive samplers have emerged as an attractive alternative to active water sampling methods as they accumulate POPs, represent time-weighted average concentrations, and can easily be shipped and deployed. As part of the AQUA-GAPS/MONET, passive samplers were deployed at 40 globally distributed sites between 2016 and 2020, for a total of 21 freshwater and 40 marine deployments. Results from silicone passive samplers showed α-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and γ-HCH displaying the greatest concentrations in the northern latitudes/Arctic Ocean, in stark contrast to the more persistent penta (PeCB)- and hexachlorobenzene (HCB), which approached equilibrium across sampling sites. Geospatial patterns of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) aqueous concentrations closely matched original estimates of production and use, implying limited global transport. Positive correlations between log-transformed concentrations of Σ 7 PCB, ΣDDTs, Σendosulfan, and Σchlordane, but not ΣHCH, and the log of population density ( p < 0.05) within 5 and 10 km of the sampling sites also supported limited transport from used sites. These results help to understand the extent of global distribution, and eventually time-trends, of organic pollutants in aquatic systems, such as across freshwaters and oceans. Future deployments will aim to establish time-trends at selected sites while adding to the geographical coverage.

The use of passive air samplers (PAS) for semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) continues to expand. To advance quantitative understanding of uptake kinetics, we calibrated the XAD-PAS, using a styrene-divinylbenzene sorbent, through a year-long side-by-side deployment with an active sampler. Twelve XAD-PASs, deployed in June 2020, were retrieved at 4-week intervals, while gas phase SVOCs were quantified in 48 consecutive week-long active samples taken from June 2020 to May 2021. Consistent with XAD's high uptake capacity, even relatively volatile SVOCs, such as hexachlorobutadiene, displayed linear uptake throughout the entire deployment. Sampling rates (SRs) range between 0.1 and 0.6 m 3 day -1 for 26 SVOCs, including brominated flame retardants, organophosphate esters, and halogenated methoxylated benzenes. SRs are compared with experimental SRs reported previously. The ability of the existing mechanistic uptake model PAS-SIM to reproduce the observed uptake and SRs was evaluated. Agreement between simulated and measured uptake curves was reasonable but varied with compound volatility and the assumed stagnant air layer boundary thickness. Even though PAS-SIM succeeds in predicting the SR range for the studied SVOCs, it fails to capture the volatility dependence of the SR by underestimating the length of the linear uptake period and by failing to consider the kinetics of sorption.

The study reports on the atmospheric concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and volatile methyl siloxanes (VMS) measured using sorbent-impregnated polyurethane foam disks (SIPs) passive air samplers. New results are reported for samples collected in 2017, which extends temporal trend information to the period 2009-2017, for 21 sites where SIPs have been deployed since 2009. Among neutral PFAS, fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) had higher concentrations than perfluoroalkane sulfonamides (FOSAs) and perfluoroalkane sulfonamido ethanols (FOSEs) with levels of ND‒228, ND‒15.8, ND‒10.4 pg/m 3 , respectively. Among ionizable PFAS, the sum of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) in air were 0.128-781 and 6.85-124 pg/m 3 , respectively. Longer-chain i.e. C 9 -C 14 PFAS, which are relevant to the recent proposal by Canada for a listing of long-chain (C 9 -C 21 ) PFCAs to the Stockholm Convention, were also detected in the environment at all site categories including Arctic sites. Cyclic and linear VMS ranged between 1.34‒452 and 0.01-12.1 ng/m 3 , respectively, showing dominance in urban areas. Despite the wide range of levels observed across different site categories, geometric means of the PFAS and VMS groups were fairly similar when grouped according to the five United Nations regions. Variable temporal trends in air (2009-2017) were observed for both PFAS and VMS. PFOS, which has been listed in the Stockholm Convention since 2009, is still showing increasing tendencies at several sites, indicating constant input from direct and/or indirect sources. As a class of plasticizers widely used in consumer products, some phthalate esters (PAEs) have been restricted due to their adverse health effects and ubiquitous presence, leading to the introduction of alternative non-phthalates plasticizers (NPPs) to the market. However, few studies focus on the influence of environmental parameters on the presence of these plasticizers and the potential human health risks for people living in poorly ventilated indoor spaces in cold regions. We investigated the trends of PAEs and NPPs in air in a typical indoor residence in northern China for over one year. The air concentrations of PAEs were significantly higher than those of NPPs (p < 0.05), indicating that PAEs are still the dominant plasticizers currently being used in the studied residence. PAEs showed seasonal fluctuation patterns of the highest levels found in summer and autumn. The temperature and relative humidity dependence for most PAEs and NPPs decreased with decreasing vapor pressure. Concentrations of the high molecular weight NPPs and PAEs positively correlated with total suspended particles (TSP). It is worth noting that the peak concentrations of PAEs and NPPs were found when the haze occurred in autumn. Principal component analysis (PCA) suggested the diverse applications of PAEs and NPPs in the indoor environment. Cities are drivers of the global economy, containing products and industries that emit many chemicals. Here, we use the Multimedia Urban Model (MUM) to estimate atmospheric emissions and fate of organophosphate esters (OPEs) from 19 global mega or major cities, finding that they collectively emitted ~81,000 kg yr -1 of ∑ 10 OPEs in 2018. Typically, polar "mobile" compounds tend to partition to and be advected by water, while non-polar "bioaccumulative" chemicals do not. Depending on the built environment and climate of the city considered, the same compound behaves like either a mobile or a bioaccumulative chemical. Cities with large impervious surface areas, such as Kolkata, mobilize even bioaccumulative contaminants to aquatic ecosystems. By contrast, cities with large areas of vegetation fix and transform contaminants, reducing loadings to aquatic ecosystems. Redox-active substances in fine particulate matter (PM) contribute to inhalation health risks through their potential to generate reactive oxygen species in epithelial lung lining fluid (ELF). The ELF's air-liquid interface (ALI) can play an important role in the phase transfer and multi-phase reactions of redox-active PM constituents. We investigated the influence of interfacial processes and properties by scrubbing of coated nano-particles with simulated ELF in a nebulizing mist chamber. Weakly water-soluble redox-active organics abundant in ambient fine PM were reproducibly loaded into ELF via ALI mixing. The resulting oxidative potential (OP) of selected quinones and other PAH derivatives were found to exceed the OP resulting from bulk mixing of the same amounts of redox-active substances and ELF. Our results indicate that the OP of PM components depends not only on the PM substance properties but also on the ELF interface properties and uptake mechanisms. Pollution from vehicle tires has received world-wide research attention due to its ubiquity and toxicity. In this study, we measured various tire-derived contaminants semi-quantitatively in archived extracts of passive air samplers deployed in 18 major cities that comprise the Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling (GAPS) Network (GAPS-Megacities). Analysis was done on archived samples, which represent one-time weighted passive air samples from each of the 18 monitoring sites. The target analytes included cyclic amines, benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) derivatives. Of the analyzed tire-derived contaminants, diphenylguanidine was the most frequently detected analyte across the globe, with estimated concentrations ranging from 45.0 pg/m 3 in Beijing, China to 199 pg/m 3 in Kolkata, India. The estimated concentrations of 6PPD-quinone and total benzothiazoles (including benzothiazole, 2-methylthio-benzothiazole, 2-methyl-benzothiazole, 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole) peaked in the Latin American and the Caribbean region at 1 pg/m 3 and 100 pg/m 3 , respectively. In addition, other known tire-derived compounds, such as hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine, phenylguanidine, and various transformation products of 6PPD, were also monitored and characterized semi-quantitatively or qualitatively. This study presents some of the earliest data on airborne concentrations of chemicals associated with tire-wear and shows that passive sampling is a viable techniquefor monitoring airborne tire-wear contamination. The historical annual loading to, removal from, and cumulative burden in the Arctic Ocean for β-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH), an isomer comprising 5-12% of technical HCH, is investigated using a mass balance box model from 1945 to 2020. Over the 76 years, loading occurred predominantly through ocean currents and river inflow (83%) and only a small portion via atmospheric transport (16%). β-HCH started to accumulate in the Arctic Ocean in the late 1940s, reached a peak of 810 t in 1986, and decreased to 87 t in 2020, when its concentrations in the Arctic water and air were ∼30 ng m -3 and ∼0.02 pg m -3 , respectively. Even though β-HCH and α-HCH (60-70% of technical HCH) are both the isomers of HCHs with almost identical temporal and spatial emission patterns, these two chemicals have shown different major pathways entering the Arctic. Different from α-HCH with the long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) as its major transport pathway, β-HCH reached the Arctic mainly through long-range oceanic transport (LROT). The much higher tendency of β-HCH to partition into the water, mainly due to its much lower Henry's Law Constant than α-HCH, produced an exceptionally strong pathway divergence with β-HCH favoring slow transport in water and α-HCH favoring rapid transport in air. The study of the fate of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the interior environment is vital because of the growing use of OPEs. Organic films on glass are both sink and sources of indoor pollutants. Indoor window films have been employed as passive air samplers to collect OPEs in the indoor air. Nevertheless, little is known about the development and equilibrium condition of OPEs on indoor window films during the film formation process. In this study, the concentrations of twelve OPEs in indoor window films from different buildings on a university campus and the growth thickness of the films as a function of sampling time were investigated in different seasons. Ten out of the 12 OPEs were detected in window film with >50 % frequency. Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), which are chlorinated and toxic OPEs, were the dominant OPEs found in the winter. The majority of OPEs in window films exhibited linear growth patterns within 77 days. Temperature, humidity, ventilation, and seasonality all affected the concentrations of various OPEs in the window films. Low molecular weight OPEs, such as tri-n-butyl phosphate and TCEP, attained equilibrium between indoor air and window films within 49 or 77 days. The indoor air concentrations of OPEs were estimated from their film concentrations based on the theoretical approach for the passive air sampler. In winter, the predicted gas-phase air concentrations of OPEs (3.7 ng/m 3 for TECP) were significantly lower than or comparable to summer (11 ng/m 3 , p < 0.05). Climate change brings about significant changes in the physical environment in the Arctic. Increasing temperatures, sea ice retreat, slumping permafrost, changing sea ice regimes, glacial loss and changes in precipitation patterns can all affect how contaminants distribute within the Arctic environment and subsequently impact the Arctic ecosystems. In this review, we summarized observed evidence of the influence of climate change on contaminant circulation and transport among various Arctic environment media, including air, ice, snow, permafrost, fresh water and the marine environment. We have also drawn on parallel examples observed in Antarctica and the Tibetan Plateau, to broaden the discussion on how climate change may influence contaminant fate in similar cold-climate ecosystems. Significant knowledge gaps on indirect effects of climate change on contaminants in the Arctic environment, including those of extreme weather events, increase in forests fires, and enhanced human activities leading to new local contaminant emissions, have been identified. Enhanced mobilization of contaminants to marine and freshwater ecosystems has been observed as a result of climate change, but better linkages need to be made between these observed effects with subsequent exposure and accumulation of contaminants in biota. Emerging issues include those of Arctic contamination by microplastics and higher molecular weight halogenated natural products (hHNPs) and the implications of such contamination in a changing Arctic environment is explored.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are synthetic chemicals that are produced at high volumes and have a global presence. CPs are generally divided into three groups based on their carbon chain lengths: short-chain CPs (SCCPs, C 10-13 ), medium-chain CPs (MCCPs, C 14-17 ), and long-chain CPs (LCCPs, C ≥18 ). SCCPs have been formally recognized as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and have been listed under the Stockholm Convention on POPs. Concerns about increases in MCCP and LCCP production as replacements for SCCP products are rising, given their similar properties to SCCPs and the fact that they remain relatively understudied with only a few reported measurements in air. Passive air samplers with polyurethane foam disks (PUF-PAS), which have been successfully applied to SCCPs, provide an opportunity to expand the existing body of data on MCCP and LCCP air concentrations, as they are inexpensive and require little maintenance. The uptake of MCCPs and LCCPs by PUF disk samplers is characterized in this paper based on newly derived PUF-air partitioning coefficients using COSMOtherm. The ability of PUF disk samplers to capture both gas-phase and particle fractions is important because MCCPs and LCCPs have reduced volatility compared to SCCPs and therefore are mainly associated with particulate matter in air. In addition, due to their use as additives in plastics and rubber products, they are associated with micro- and nanoplastics, which are considered to be potential vectors for the long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) of these chemicals. The review has highlighted other limitations to reporting of MCCPs and LCCPs in air, including the lack of suitable analytical standards and the requirement for advanced analytical methods to detect and resolve these complex mixtures. The Arctic region forms a unique environment with specific physical, chemical, and biological processes affecting mercury (Hg) cycles and limited anthropogenic Hg sources. However, historic global emissions and long range atmospheric transport has led to elevated Hg in Arctic wildlife and waterways. Continuous atmospheric Hg measurements, spanning 20 years, and increased monitoring sites has allowed a more comprehensive understanding of how Arctic atmospheric mercury is changing over time. Time-series trend analysis of TGM (Total Gaseous Mercury) in air was performed from 10 circumpolar air monitoring stations, comprising of high-Arctic, and sub-Arctic sites. GOM (gaseous oxidised mercury) and PHg (particulate bound mercury) measurements were also available at 2 high-Arctic sites. Seasonal mean TGM for sub-Arctic sites were lowest during fall ranging from 1.1 ng m -3 Hyytiälä to 1.3 ng m -3 , Little Fox Lake. Mean TGM concentrations at high-Arctic sites showed the greatest variability, with highest daily means in spring ranging between 4.2 ng m -3 at Amderma and 2.4 ng m -3 at Zeppelin, largely driven by local chemistry. Annual TGM trend analysis was negative for 8 of the 10 sites. High-Arctic seasonal TGM trends saw smallest decline during summer. Fall trends ranged from -0.8% to -2.6% yr -1 . Across the sub-Arctic sites spring showed the largest significant decreases, ranging between -7.7% to -0.36% yr -1 , while fall generally had no significant trends. High-Arctic speciation of GOM and PHg at Alert and Zeppelin showed that the timing and composition of atmospheric mercury deposition events are shifting. Alert GOM trends are increasing throughout the year, while PHg trends decreased or not significant. Zeppelin saw the opposite, moving towards increasing PHg and decreasing GOM. Atmospheric mercury trends over the last 20 years indicate that Hg concentrations are decreasing across the Arctic, though not uniformly. Carbonaceous aerosol species, such as elemental carbon (EC), are important Short-Lived Climate Forcers (SLCFs), contributing to climate and health effects of air pollution. The quantification of carbonaceous aerosols has been conventionally carried out using active air sampling followed by various analytical techniques, such as thermal/thermal-optical analysis. Active sampling requires specific equipment and infrastructure with electricity and therefore may not be the best choice for studying carbonaceous aerosols at remote locations. Passive sampling on the other hand provides a simple and cost-effective alternative to study time-weighted temporal and spatial trends. For the first time in this study, we have developed a method to examine the viability of measuring EC using polyurethane foam passive air samplers (PUF-PAS) coupled with a thermal analysis, i.e., EnCan-Total-900 (ECT9). The method was found reproducible with coefficients of variation as low as 3% for EC measured in ambient passive samples. The method had relatively low background with EC levels in blanks being as low as 0.1% of those in deployed samples, allowing quantification within a wide range of concentrations. The results indicate a homogenous distribution of particles within the PUF-PAS substrate. EC concentrations measured with the passive method were not significantly different from those obtained from active samples at the study sites (p > 0.01). This proof of concept of the PUF-PAS method provides an opportunity to cost-effectively expand measurements of elemental carbon at the global scale, and could be further extended to include other carbonaceous aerosol species in the future. The Stockholm Convention is key to addressing the global threats of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to humanity and the environment. It has been successful in identifying new POPs, but its national implementation remains challenging, particularly by low- and middle-income Parties. Concerted action is needed to assist Parties in implementing the Convention's obligations. This analysis aims to identify and recommend research and scientific support needed for timely implementation of the Convention. We aim this analysis at scientists and experts from a variety of natural and social sciences and from all sectors (academia, civil society, industry, and government institutions), as well as research funding agencies. Further, we provide practical guidance to scientists and experts to promote the visibility and accessibility of their work for the Convention's implementation, followed by recommendations for sustaining scientific support to the Convention. This study is the first of a series on analyzing policy needs for scientific evidence under global governance on chemicals and waste.

22 alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (alk-PAHs) were characterized in ambient air individually for the first time in urban and semi-urban locations in Toronto, Canada. Five unsubstituted PAHs were included for comparison. Results from the measurements were used to estimate benzo[ a ]pyrene equivalent toxicity (BaPeq) of individual compounds in order to investigate the significance of a single compound in contributing to the overall toxic equivalency (TEQ) of air mixtures. To determine which compounds merit further investigation, BaPeq values of individual compounds were compared to the measured BaP toxicity. Our results showed that both unsubstituted and alkylated PAHs were more abundant in the urban area (38 and 30%, respectively). Benzo[ a ]pyrene levels at the urban location exceeded Ontario's 24 h guideline (40% of the events), and on average, it was 5 times higher than that at the semi-urban area. Gas-phase two- and three-ring compounds contributed up to 39% (urban) and 76% (semi-urban) of the TEQ of all compounds analyzed. Some alk-PAHs such as 7,12-dimethylbenzo[ a ]anthracene had a huge impact on the toxicity of urban air, and its BaPeq was on average 8 times higher than that of BaP. We emphasize that the toxic impact of alkylated and gaseous PAHs, which is not routinely included in many air monitoring programs, is significant and should not be neglected.

Studies on the presence and fate of household and personal care chemicals (HPCCs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are important due to their increasing consumption worldwide. The seasonal patterns and removal mechanisms of HPCCs are not well understood for WWTPs that apply different treatment technologies. To answer these questions, the sewage and sludge samples were taken from 10 typical WWTPs in Northeast China. Levels of UV filters in the influents in the warm season were significantly greater than that of the cold season (p < 0.05). Significant seasonal differences were found for the removals of many HPCCs. Results revealed that the highest removal efficiencies were found for linear alkylbenzene sulphonates with values ranging from 97.2% to 99.7%, and the values were 50.0%-99.9% for other HPCCs. The SimpleTreat model demonstrated that the studied WWTPs were operating with high efficiency at the time of sampling. The sorption of HPCCs to sludge can be strongly associated with their physicochemical parameters. Mass balance calculation suggested that sorption was the dominant mechanism for the removal of antimicrobials, while degradation and/or biotransformation were the other mechanisms for removing the most HPCCs in the WWTPs. In the present study, the suitability and sensitivity of different in vitro toxicity endpoints were determined to evaluate and distinguish the specific contributions of polycyclic aromatic carbon (PAC) mixtures from various sites in Toronto (Canada), to pulmonary toxicity. Air samples were collected for two-month periods from April 2014 to March 2015 from one location, and from August 2016 to August 2017 from multiple locations reflecting different geographical areas in Toronto, and the Greater Toronto Area, with varying source emissions including background, traffic, urban, industrial and residential sites. Relative concentrations of PACs and their derivatives in these air samples were characterised. In vitro cytotoxicity, pro-inflammatory, and oxidative stress assays were employed to assess the acute pulmonary effects of urban-air-derived air pollutants. In addition, global transcriptional profiling was utilized to understand how these chemical mixtures exert their harmful effects. Lastly, the transcriptomic data and the chemical profiles for each site and season were used to relate the biological response back to individual constituents. Site-specific responses could not be derived; however, the Spring season was identified as the most responsive through benchmark concentration analysis. A combination of correlational analysis and principal component analysis revealed that nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) drive the response at lower concentrations while specific PAHs drive the response at the highest concentration tested. Unsubstituted PAHs are the current targets for analysis as priority pollutants. The present study highlights the importance of by-products of PAH degradation in the assessment of risk. Commercial chemicals are used extensively across urban centres worldwide 1 , posing a potential exposure risk to 4.2 billion people 2 . Harmful chemicals are often assessed on the basis of their environmental persistence, accumulation in biological organisms and toxic properties, under international and national initiatives such as the Stockholm Convention 3 . However, existing regulatory frameworks rely largely upon knowledge of the properties of the parent chemicals, with minimal consideration given to the products of their transformation in the atmosphere. This is mainly due to a dearth of experimental data, as identifying transformation products in complex mixtures of airborne chemicals is an immense analytical challenge 4 . Here we develop a new framework-combining laboratory and field experiments, advanced techniques for screening suspect chemicals, and in silico modelling-to assess the risks of airborne chemicals, while accounting for atmospheric chemical reactions. By applying this framework to organophosphate flame retardants, as representative chemicals of emerging concern 5 , we find that their transformation products are globally distributed across 18 megacities, representing a previously unrecognized exposure risk for the world's urban populations. More importantly, individual transformation products can be more toxic and up to an order-of-magnitude more persistent than the parent chemicals, such that the overall risks associated with the mixture of transformation products are also higher than those of the parent flame retardants. Assessing complex environmental mixtures and their effects is challenging. In this study, we evaluate the utility of an avian in vitro screening approach to determine the effects of passive air sampler extracts collected from different global megacities on cytotoxicity and gene expression. Concentrations of a suite of organic flame retardants (OFRs) were quantified in extracts from a total of 19 megacities/major cities in an earlier study, and levels were highly variable across sites. Chicken embryonic hepatocytes were exposed to serial dilutions of extracts from the 19 cities for 24 h. Cell viability results indicate a high level of variability in cytotoxicity, with extracts from Toronto, Canada, having the lowest LC50 value. Partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis was used to estimate LC50 values from OFR concentrations. PLS modeling of OFRs was moderately predictive of LC50 ( p -value = 0.0003, r 2 = 0.66, slope = 0.76, when comparing predicted LC50 to actual values), although only after one outlier city was removed from the analysis. A chicken ToxChip PCR array, comprising 43 target genes, was used to determine effects on gene expression, and similar to results for cell viability, gene expression profiles were highly variable among the megacities. PLS modeling was used to determine if gene expression was related to the OFR profiles of the extracts. Weak relationships to the ToxChip expression profiles could be detected for only three of the 35 OFRs (indicated by regression slopes between 0.6 and 0.5 when comparing predicted to actual OFR concentrations). While this in vitro approach shows promise in terms of evaluating effects of complex mixtures, we also identified several limitations that, if addressed in future studies, might improve its performance.

Polyurethane foam passive air samplers (PUF-PAS) are the most common type of passive air sampler used for a range of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), including regulated persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and emerging contaminants (e.g., novel flame retardants, phthalates, current-use pesticides). Data from PUF-PAS are key indicators of effectiveness of global regulatory actions on SVOCs, such as the Global Monitoring Plan of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. While most PUF-PAS use similar double-dome metal shielding, there is no standardized dome size, shape, or deployment configuration, with many different PUF-PAS designs used in regional and global monitoring. Yet, no information is available on the comparability of data from studies using different PUF-PAS designs. We brought together 12 types of PUF-PAS used by different research groups around the world and deployed them in a multi-part intercomparison to evaluate the variability in reported concentrations introduced by different elements of PAS monitoring. PUF-PAS were deployed for 3 months in outdoor air in Kjeller, Norway in 2015-2016 in three phases to capture (1) the influence of sampler design on data comparability, (2) the influence of analytical variability when samplers are analyzed at different laboratories, and (3) the overall variability in global monitoring data introduced by differences in sampler configurations and analytical methods. Results indicate that while differences in sampler design (in particular, the spacing between the upper and lower sampler bowls) account for up to 50 % differences in masses collected by samplers, the variability introduced by analysis in different laboratories far exceeds this amount, resulting in differences spanning orders of magnitude for POPs and PAHs. The high level of variability due to analysis in different laboratories indicates that current SVOC air sampling data (i.e., not just for PUF-PAS but likely also for active air sampling) are not directly comparable between laboratories/monitoring programs. To support on-going efforts to mobilize more SVOC data to contribute to effectiveness evaluation, intercalibration exercises to account for uncertainties in air sampling, repeated at regular intervals, must be established to ensure analytical comparability and avoid biases in global-scale assessments of SVOCs in air caused by differences in laboratory performance., Competing Interests: The authors report no declarations of interest., (© 2021 The Authors.)

Nitrated monoaromatic hydrocarbons (NMAHs) are ubiquitous in the environment and an important part of atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS) and brown carbon. They are ecotoxic and with underresearched toxic potential for humans. NMAHs were determined in size-segregated ambient particulate matter collected at two urban sites in central Europe, Ostrava and Kladno, Czech Republic. The average sums of 12 NMAHs (Σ 12 NMAH) measured in winter PM 10 samples from Ostrava and Kladno were 102 and 93 ng m -3 , respectively, and 8.8 ng m -3 in summer PM 10 samples from Ostrava. The concentrations in winter corresponded to 6.3-7.3% and 2.6-3.1% of HULIS-C and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), respectively. Nitrocatechols represented 67-93%, 61-73% and 28-96% of NMAHs in PM 10 samples collected in winter and summer at Ostrava and in winter at Kladno, respectively. The mass size distribution of the targeted substance classes peaked in the submicrometre size fractions (PM 1 ), often in the PM 0.5 size fraction especially in summer. The bioaccessible fraction of NMAHs was determined by leaching PM 3 samples in two simulated lung fluids, Gamble's solution and artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF). More than half of NMAH mass is found bioaccessible, almost complete for nitrosalicylic acids. The bioaccessible fraction was generally higher when using ALF (mimics the chemical environment created by macrophage activity, pH 4.5) than Gamble's solution (pH 7.4). Trophic magnification of cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMS) in a terrestrial food web was investigated by measuring concentrations of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) and two reference chemicals within air and biota samples from an avian food web located in a mixed urban-agricultural landscape. Terrestrial trophic magnification factors derived from lipid normalized concentrations (TMF L s) for D5 and D6 were 0.94 (0.17 SE) and 1.1 (0.23 SE) and not statistically different from 1 ( p > 0.05); however, the TMF L of D4 was 0.62 (0.11 SE) and statistically less than 1 ( p < 0.001). TMF L s of PCB-153 and p,p' -DDE were 5.6 (2.2 SE) and 6.1 (2.8 SE) and statistically greater than 1 ( p < 0.001). TMF L s of cVMS in this terrestrial system were similar to those reported in aquatic systems. However, trophic magnification factors derived on a fugacity basis (TMF F s), which recognize differences in body temperature and lipid composition between organisms, were greater than corresponding TMF L s primarily because a temperature-induced thermodynamic biomagnification of hydrophobic chemicals occurs when endothermic organisms consume poikilothermic organisms. Therefore, we recommend that biomagnification studies of food webs including endothermic and poikilothermic organisms incorporate differences in body temperature and tissue composition to accurately characterize the biomagnification potential of chemicals.

Tailings ponds in the oil sands (OS) region in Alberta, Canada, have been associated with fugitive emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants to the atmosphere. However, the contribution of tailings ponds to the total fugitive emissions of VOCs from OS operations remains uncertain. To address this knowledge gap, a field study was conducted in the summer of 2017 at Suncor's Pond 2/3 to estimate emissions of a suite of pollutants including 68 VOCs using a combination of micrometeorological methods and measurements from a flux tower. The results indicate that in 2017, Pond 2/3 was an emission source of 3322 ± 727 tons of VOCs including alkanes, aromatics, and oxygenated and sulfur-containing organics. While the total VOC emissions were approximately a factor of 2 higher than those reported by Suncor, the individual VOC species emissions varied by up to a factor of 12. A chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor model was used to estimate the contribution of the tailings pond to VOC pollution events in a nearby First Nations and Metis community in Fort McKay. CMB results indicate that Suncor Pond 2/3 contributed up to 57% to the total mass of VOCs measured at Fort McKay, reinforcing the importance of accurate VOC emission estimation methods for tailings ponds.

Mining-related activities in the Alberta Oil Sands Region (AOSR) are known to emit polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and related compounds to ambient air. This is a concern due to the toxicity of PAHs, including their transformation products such as nitrated (NPAHs) and oxygenated (OPAHs) PAHs. This is the first study that provided a more extensive outlook into the sources, occurrence in air, and spatial and seasonal patterns of NPAHs and OPAHs in the AOSR by using passive air sampling. A sampling campaign from 2013 to 2016 revealed concentrations of NPAHs that were much lower than those of OPAHs. The highest concentrations of NPAHs were concentrated in the region associated with extensive mining activities, with ∑NPAH concentrations ranging from 20 to 250 pg/m 3 . Within the oil sands (OS) mineable area, NPAHs associated with primary release appear more commonly, while NPAHs produced via oxidative transformation are predominant outside of this area. The concentrations of ∑OPAH ranged from 400 to 2400 pg/m 3 , with the highest air concentrations in the region located south of the main OS activity zone, with peak concentrations attributed to a 2016 forest fire event. Uptake of PAHs from ambient air and their subsequent conversion to generate OPAHs is believed to play an important role in wildfire emissions of OPAHs. The seasonal trend investigation was inconclusive, with NPAHs slightly higher during the winter, while OPAHs were slightly elevated during summer. A preliminary comparison of ambient concentrations of OPAHs and NPAHs in the AOSR to measurements in the Greater Toronto Area revealed a similar range of concentrations, but also a unique presence of certain NPAHs such as 4-nitrobiphenyl, 2-nitrodibenzothiophene, 2,8-dinitrodibenzothiophene and 6-nitrobenzo-(a)-pyrene. Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues are high-volume production organic synthetic compounds used in the synthesis of plastics. BPA has been categorized as an endocrine disrupting compound due to its ability to disrupt the hormonal makeup of living organisms. Air and dust are common sources of exposure of BPA for living organisms and most sources are anthropogenic and a result of thermal destruction of BPA containing materials, import and export of recyclable materials (especially e-waste) and fugitive emissions near BPA handling facilities. Current reports on BPA levels in air are limited and focused on effluent and surface water analysis (due to BPA's propensity for environmental distribution to water). BPA's presence in the developing part of the world is of particular concern due to lack of regulations and uncontrolled incinerations of domestic and imported waste. The current review summarizes up-to-date scientific literature on BPA's occurrence in air, alongside physico-chemical and partitioning properties, persistence in air, seasonal variation, consideration of analytical strategies for BPA analysis and toxicological information. Globally reported air concentrations of BPA are included in this report, alongside reports on indoor air concentration of BPA and its analogues. As a special interest, levels of tetrabromobisphenol (TBBPA) are also mentioned. Overall, the highest outdoor air levels of BPA were reported in China (1.1 × 10 6 pg/m 3 ) near a low-tech e-waste recycling site, while examination of indoor dust revealed the presence of bisphenol analogues used in "BPA-free" products, raising questions about their safety. Due to their low volatility, BPA and its analogues are mainly present in air associated with particles; this has important implications for their persistence in air and the role of particulate matter (especially microplastics) in their transport and deposition. Accurate values of physicochemical properties are essential for screening semivolatile organic compounds for human and environmental hazard and risk. In silico approaches for estimation are widely used, but the accuracy of these and measured values can be difficult to ascertain. Final adjusted values (FAVs) harmonize literature-reported measurements to ensure consistency and minimize uncertainty. We propose a workflow, including a novel Bayesian approach, for estimating FAVs that combines measurements using direct and indirect methods and in silico values. The workflow was applied to 74 compounds across nine classes to generate recommended FAVs (FAV R s). Estimates generated by in silico methods (OPERA, COSMOtherm, EPI Suite, SPARC, and polyparameter linear free energy relationships (pp-LFER) models) differed by orders of magnitude for some properties and compounds and performed systematically worse for larger, more polar compounds. COSMOtherm and OPERA generally performed well with low bias although no single in silico method performed best across all compound classes and properties. Indirect measurement methods produced highly accurate and precise estimates compared with direct measurement methods. Our Bayesian method harmonized measured and in silico estimated physicochemical properties without introducing observable biases. We thus recommend use of the FAV R s presented here and that the proposed Bayesian workflow be used to generate FAV R s for SVOCs beyond those in this study.
