In the US, public-use airports are typically owned and operated/governed by local government — meaning cities, counties or state-authorised authorities (airport or port). Whichever type of governance structure the airport has, there is likely a board, either advisory or authority. Airport board membership is typically determined by the governing body (council or commission); the number of members and the term of service may vary. Members who join the board often bring new, innovative ideas with the best intentions but may not have a thorough understanding of the intricacies of the airport industry. The people appointed or elected to boards are usually energetic and successful in their fields and want to use that knowledge effectively elsewhere in the community. It is important to harness this new energy and provide detailed airport and aviation industry training, enabling the board to make effective decisions and function at the highest level. This paper provides a customisable foundation for an airport to use for its board orientation and ongoing training sessions. Essential elements for orientation and training include understanding the members' role on the board, their level of authority, expectations of the members and of meetings, meeting etiquette and the specialised nature of the airport industry. Lastly, a compilation of important documents and information is provided to assist airport executives in developing and implementing meaningful airport board orientation and training. Airports can be pivotal drivers of regional economic development. However, Gold Coast Airport's cross-border location, spanning two local government areas (City of Gold Coast and Tweed Shire) and two Australian states (Queensland and New South Wales), has created several governance challenges affecting regional economic sustainability. This article explores three questions: (1) What are the barriers and opportunities to promote economic development and cross-border planning around Gold Coast Airport? (2) How do cross-border governance arrangements and planning frameworks impact the airport's economic contributions? (3) What lessons can be drawn from this case study? To address these questions, the study uses a mixed-method approach comprising key informant interviews and policy analysis. The study finds that the airport's economic impact is largely confined to the northern (Queensland) side of the border due to insufficient cross-border cooperation and fragmented planning frameworks. The article proposes transforming the border into a catalyst for economic development through three instruments: reimagining the border as a driver of growth, establishing a cross-border 'airport city region' with integrated governance, and creating a Cross-Border Committee under Federal oversight to foster collaboration. The safety of flight operations and passengers is one of the main criteria for evaluating airport performance. Risk analysis and assessment are used to ensure safety in the airport's decision-making process. This paper aims to formally analyze these processes and look for weaknesses that can lead to erroneous assessments and, thus, ineffective decisions. Given the specific nature of the issue, which requires the Safety II approach, it was assumed that the analysis would be carried out using a systems approach, considering all factors and relationships affecting the effectiveness of the examined processes. As relatively small-scale deviations from the planned operation of individual system functions are observed in real-world analyses, the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) was selected as adequate for such situations. A formal study of the risk assessment process was carried out, focusing on two cases chosen during the initial identification of possible hazards. Applying the FRAM proved an effective way to analyze and search for functional resonance in the airport risk assessment process. It also enabled the identification of mitigating actions, which allows for breaking the chain of variability that leads to an unfavorable course of the process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although there is evidence that more regional airport activities can increase regional house prices, no study has examined the relevant impacts of aviation discontinuity. My unique quasi-experiment data comes from New Zealand where Jetstar withdrew its domestic services from four airports/regions in December 2019. The synthetic control method (SCM)'s results reveal that the withdrawal created different impacts on the house prices of the regions involved, in which the overall effect was negative in the short run but the housing market in New Zealand has recovered in the long run. Background: The paper aims at answering cognitive questions which let one draw conclusions on AR usability in terms of supporting the dangerous goods acceptance (DGA) process before air transportation, including (1) which operations of the DGA process in airports reveal the highest potential in terms of being supported by AR solutions? (2) Which parameters of the DGA process can be improved by the use of AR solutions? (3) What benefits and drawbacks of solutions derived from the use of AR technology have been noticed in practical experiments? Research method: The study has been conducted by analysing the DGA process while considering the support of AR technology, the development of AR applications for AR goggles and a mobile phone, and their practical testing. Results: There has been a model of the DGA process has been developed in the paper as well as decision algorithms, helping operators controlling DGs before a flight, have been identified. Following these foundations, the design of functions supporting the DG acceptance process has been indicated and their expected influence on DGA results has been evaluated. Conclusions: The potential for AR support in DGA has been very positively assessed by experts; however, there have also been observed differences between functions that indicate the most promising and less promising aspects. Operators especially appreciate AR goggles when their goal is to show a virtual picture of data and related law regulations regarding controlled DGs, while interactions with AR goggles are assessed less positively. The development of air transportation infrastructure, especially airports, plays an important role in improving connectivity, mobility, and economic and social growth. Estimating construction costs is an essential step in the development planning process to ensure proper budget allocation. This study aims to develop a special construction cost estimation model for airport construction by analyzing various variables that affect costs. The research uses a quantitative approach with primary data obtained from airport building construction work contracts and interviews with professional practitioners in this field. Sample data was taken from 22 output reports of airport construction work packages that have been completed or are being planned in several provinces in Indonesia. Data analysis techniques include correlation coefficient tests, determination, normality tests, multicollinearity tests, as well as t-tests and model variations. The results of the study are expected to produce an accurate, easy-to-use, and accountable cost estimation model, taking into account independent variables such as job characteristics, contract types, and market conditions. This estimation model is expected to be able to minimize the discrepancy between cost estimates and the realization of implementation costs, thereby contributing to the efficiency and sustainability of airport development. In today's rapidly evolving business environment, customer requirements and expectations are continually increasing. Many service-oriented companies, including airlines, are struggling to accurately understand and meet the true needs and desires of their passengers. Often, they rely on outdated views of airline services. This study investigated how various dimensions of service quality impact customer satisfaction at Iraqi Airways. Using a convenience sampling technique, data were collected through questionnaires distributed at Baghdad International Airport and Erbil International Airport in Iraq. A total of 381 valid responses were analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results indicate that five service quality dimensions--airline tangibles, terminal tangibles, security and safety, personnel services, and airline image--have a positive and significant effect on customer satisfaction. However, empathy does not significantly influence customer satisfaction. The findings suggest that Iraqi Airways should focus on differentiating its services to enhance customer satisfaction. Managers are encouraged to concentrate on factors that elevate service quality, thereby improving customer satisfaction. This study can assist Baghdad International Airport and Erbil International Airport in understanding the importance of service quality, which could lead to higher passenger satisfaction and foster long-term relationships with their customers. The purpose of this research paper is to develop a comprehensive assessment model to examine how different forms of airport ownership affect the design and construction of airport passenger terminals. The study emphasises the development and justification of the research framework through an extensive literature review and theoretical foundation. The significance of this research lies in the need for a thorough understanding of the relationship between airport ownership forms and the execution of passenger terminal projects. The literature review identifies gaps in existing research and underscores the necessity of a new research framework. The chosen research approach, which includes interviews and case studies, is carefully justified. The paper systematically outlines the key elements of the research framework, linking them to relevant literature and theoretical concepts. By providing a step-by-step development of the research framework, this paper lays the groundwork for future investigations in this area. The conclusion summarises the key points presented in the article and emphasises the importance of the developed research framework in guiding further research efforts.

The COVID-19 pandemic threatened the world. As an important transportation hub connecting countries and regions, airports have played a critical role in COVID-19 prevention and control. This study developed an infection risk-human comfort-energy consumption model to calculate the COVID-19 transmission and energy consumption for epidemic prevention and control in seven different functional areas of an airport during different seasons (winter, summer, and transition season) and actual passenger movement. When considering dynamic passenger flow, the energy consumption needed to prevent and control transmission of the epidemic in each area of the airport could be reduced by 71-85 %. The waiting, dining, and shopping areas were the areas with the highest energy consumption, accounting for 25-47 %, 15-32 %, and 11-38 % of the total energy consumption of epidemic prevention at the airport, respectively. The dining area had the highest energy consumption per square meter, reaching 14.2 kWh/m² at its highest. After closing the dining area, energy consumption was reduced by 14-20 %. Compared with strict epidemic prevention and control, energy consumption in the airport was reduced by 7085 % considering both optimized intervention and dynamic passenger flow. Among the component materials of a flexible or mixed road structure, the asphalt mixture is considered to be the most important material to be accurately characterized. Most of the literature references on aggregates in asphalt mixtures have paid attention to the grading curve, shape, strength and roughness, all of which are important for the performance of asphalt mixtures. The modification of bitumen with polymers gives certain qualities to the asphalt mixtures containing it, namely: high temperature elastic properties, thermal cracking resistance, fatigue resistance, and long-term durability. The aim of this paper is to present the influence of the aggregate type and bitumen type on the physico-mechanical characteristics of asphalt mixtures.The laboratory studies were carried out in the Road Laboratory on the asphalt mixture BAA 16 (AC16) used in the wearing course of airports. Tests were carried out, such as the Marshall set and flow index, water absorption, stiffness modulus, fatigue resistance, resistance to permanent deformation, fuel resistance.The quality of the materials used in an asphalt mixtures plays an important role in the subsequent in-service behavior of the asphalt mixture.

The Ilha do Sal – one of the islands of the Cabo Verde archipelago – was a matter of strong interest by the Italian fascist government starting in 1935 with a disputed and contentious “war for the air” between Salazar and Mussolini’s government and the respective Aviation Ministries. The Portuguese Estado Novo decided to provide the Ilha do Sal for use by the Italian aviation company L.A.T.I. (Linee Aeree Transcontinentali Italiane), born from the Ala Littoria in 1939 and led by Bruno Mussolini, the Duce son. In fact, Ilha do Sal was essential for Italian aviation to complete the “domination” of airlines in South America because represented the last stopover point on European soil before crossing the Atlantic necessary for aerial technical refueling. The research investigated the construction of the airport in the Ilha do Sal and the relations between Italy and Portugal. The island – defined a “little stone ship” – became an “aeronautical city” built in only 180 days by Italian technicians, and due to the airport, the infrastructures and a new “non-planned” urbanization, the island in 1940 moved from an almost desert land to a population of seven hundred people. With the beginning of the II World War, a “diplomatic war” broke off the relations between the two countries. Nevertheless, this technical Italian urbanization of the Ilha do Sal was totally ignored by Portuguese historiography of that time. After the II WW, the airport returned to Portuguese ownership and the new Alitalia airlines restarted its flights; but the airport was completely modified, partly erasing the work of Italian engineers.

Airport resilience is reflected in the airport 's ability to adapt to environmental changes, have strong resistance and achieve performance recovery. Based on the level of airport performance, this paper puts forward the calculation formula and evaluation standard of airport resilience index to reflect the level of airport resilience. Considering the level of meteorological disasters and the strength of airport prevention and recovery measures, an airport performance level calculation model based on dynamic Bayesian network is established. The conditional probability table between Bayesian network nodes is established by the parent node level index and the node state transition performance. The fuzzy theory is used to improve and calculate the airport resilience index and sub characteristic index. Taking Tianjin Binhai International Airport as an example, the evaluation results of airport resilience under blizzard in February 2021 are obtained, and the validity of the model is verified based on real flight data. The results show that compared with the performance level calculation method based on flight data, the calculation error of airport resilience index of dynamic Bayesian network model proposed in this paper is less than 0.01, and the average error of sub-characteristics is 0.0129, which can scientifically and accurately evaluate the resilience of airport during normal operation and the dynamic change process of resilience under disaster. The influence of disaster level, prevention and recovery measures on airport resilience is further analyzed. The results show that the deterioration effect of disaster on airport resilience is greater than the resistance effect of prevention measures. The higher the disaster level and the lower the level of preventive measures, the smaller the degree of resilience recovery of the airport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thailand's aerial geostrategic importance led the United States to offer a generous air aid programme in the 1950s. The US funded the refurbishment of airfields across the country: the extension and hardening of airstrips, and the construction of new tarmacs, terminal buildings and navigation equipment. They also provided technical training to Thai nationals. The leading US international airline Pan American Airways helped modernize Thai Airways. In this paper, I explore the broad outlines of this programme and focus in particular on Pan American's assistance. I argue that although the airport and navigation assistance portions of the programme were largely successful, the Pan American assistance side of the project largely failed to meet expectations. Substantial degradation can occur to warm permafrost due to changes in surface conditions resulting from infrastructure development and climate warming. The associated geohazards, including differential settlement, slope instability, and liquefaction of degraded, unconsolidated materials in seismically active warm permafrost regions, pose substantial threats to the built infrastructure. Among them, seismic hazards of degraded permafrost have received little attention. This paper aims to provide a case study of an airport built on warm permafrost about 80 years ago, focusing on climate changes, permafrost degradation, and observed seismic hazards during a strong earthquake. The study site, that is, the Northway Airport, is located in a discontinuous permafrost area in Interior Alaska. Geotechnical data from 1973, 1991, and 2005 were compiled and analyzed to reveal permafrost degradation at various surface conditions, and are compared with the well-known degradation data from a site in Fairbanks. Furthermore, the responses of the airport runway during the 2002 Denali earthquake (Mw = 7.9), including liquefaction and lateral spreading displacements, are described and analyzed. And the seismic hazards of civilian airports built on permafrost across Alaska are surveyed. Distinct trends are revealed in two periods, namely, from 1943 to 1975 and from 1976 to 2021, for air temperature, precipitation, and wind speed. Permafrost tables were observed to drop with time at various rates for different surface conditions. Liquefaction and lateral spreading were observed extensively during the earthquake. The locations of observed liquefaction at the airport are mapped, and the lateral spreading displacements are estimated based on available photos. The standard penetration test data collected during geotechnical investigations are analyzed, and a liquefiable layer is identified at the talik between the active layer and the permafrost table. Moreover, 55% of Alaska's civilian airports are in permafrost areas. Among them, two-thirds fall within seismic zones with a risk level of 3 or above. The rapid growth in air traffic has led to increasing congestion at airports, creating bottlenecks that disrupt ground operations and compromise the efficiency of air traffic management (ATM). Ensuring the predictability of ground operations is vital for maintaining the sustainability of the ATM sector. Flight efficiency is closely tied to adherence to assigned airport arrival and departure slots, which helps minimize primary delays and prevents cascading reactionary delays. Significant deviations from scheduled arrival times—whether early or late—negatively impact airport operations and air traffic flow, often requiring the imposition of Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) regulations to accommodate demand fluctuations. This study leverages a data-driven machine learning approach to enhance the predictability of in-block and landing times. A Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) neural network was trained using a dataset that integrates flight trajectories, meteorological conditions, and airport operations data. The model demonstrated high accuracy in predicting landing time deviations, achieving a Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE) of 8.71 min and showing consistent performance across various long-haul flight profiles. In contrast, in-block time predictions exhibited greater variability, influenced by limited data on ground-level factors such as taxi-in delays and gate availability. The results highlight the potential of deep learning models to optimize airport resource allocation and improve operational planning. By accurately predicting landing times, this approach supports enhanced runway management and the better alignment of ground handling resources, reducing delays and increasing efficiency in high-traffic airport environments. These findings provide a foundation for developing predictive systems that improve airport operations and air traffic management, with benefits extending to both short- and long-haul flight operations. This paper documents a windshear case for an airport in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and explores, for the first time, the capability for high-resolution numerical weather simulation of the wind shear features. The windshear appears to be associated with pulses of the wind speed in a low-level easterly jet. The features are basically reproduced quite well with the high-resolution numerical model, though some discrepancies are identified, such as the maximum wind speed of the easterly jet and the magnitude of the eddy dissipation rate as compared with the actual Doppler LIDAR observations. Statistical analysis has been performed between the observation and the simulation results. The sensitivity of the modeling result to the choice of turbulence parameterization scheme has also been studied. The study result shows that it is possible to forecast the windshear feature using a high-resolution numerical weather prediction model for an airport in the complex terrain of the Plateau. This paper introduces a simulation model designed as a decision-making tool to assess and analyze various crowd management strategies with a focus on enhancing sustainability in airport operations. This model specifically addresses the challenges and risks associated with managing passenger flows within airport terminals. By simulating different scenarios, the model aims to provide valuable insights into how to effectively handle crowd dynamics and enhance overall terminal efficiency, safety, and sustainability. This case study was conducted at Henri Coanda International Airport, ARENA 12 simulation software being used in order to model the passenger flows within the airport terminal. Two scenarios were considered: The first one involves maintaining a fixed number of security and check-in desks for the two airline groups. In contrast, the second scenario allows for a variable number of security and check-in desks for the same airline groups. By optimizing resource allocation and minimizing waiting time, this model contributes to more sustainable airport management operations. Three measures of performance (MOPs) were selected to assess the system activity: the average passenger waiting time, the average passenger number queue length, and the average utilization rate. Comparing the results, we concluded that the second scenario shows a relative improvement in almost all performance measures when compared to the first scenario. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantum game theory merges principles from quantum mechanics with game theory, exploring how quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement can influence strategic decision making. It offers a novel approach to analyzing and optimizing complex systems where traditional game theory may fall short. Congestion of passengers, if considered as a network, may fall into the categories of optimization cases of quantum games. This paper explores the application of quantum potential games to minimize congestion in common areas at airports. The players/passengers of the airport have identical interests and they share the same utility function. A metric is introduced that considers a passenger's visit to a common area by setting their preferences, in order to avoid congestion. Passengers can decide whether to visit a specific common area or choose an alternative. This study demonstrates that the proposed game is a quantum potential game for tackling congestion, with identical interests, ensuring the existence of a Nash equilibrium. We consider passengers to be players that want to ensure their interests. Quantum entanglement is utilized to validate the concept, and the results highlight the effectiveness of this approach. The objective is to ensure that not all passengers select the same common place of the airport to reduce getting crowded; hence, the airborne disease infection probability increases due to overcrowding. Our findings provide a promising framework for optimizing passenger flow and reducing congestion in airport common areas through quantum game theory. We showed that the proposed system is stable by encapsulating the Lyapunov stability. We compared it to a simulated annealing approach to show the efficacy of the quantum game approach. We acknowledge that this framework can be utilized in other disciplines as well. Airports, by combining air transport with other modes of transport, fuel local and regional development. Airports are home to institutions and companies that offer employment to workers in various fields. They also attract investors and positively influence the image of the region, contributing to the establishment of companies and the development of tourism, which also leads to job creation. Taking these issues into account, surveys were carried out in 2021, 2022 and 2023 to determine how residents of municipalities, representatives of municipal authorities and airport representatives, perceive the impact of the airport on the socio-economic situation of the municipality in which they are located, including the labor market. Airports are seen as a catalyst for the development of the regional labour market and employment growth in the opinion of their stakeholders. The perception of the impact of the airport in the opinion of their stakeholders depended on the size of the airport, its location in the municipality, the nature of the municipality and the level of education of the municipalities residents participating in the survey. In the course of the research, data on the operation of airports, municipalities and strategic documents of municipalities were analyzed and survey research was carried out using questionnaire and interview techniques. The research focused on 10 airports located in Poland. A total of 1,200 surveys were conducted among residents of municipalities, 10 interviews with local government and port officials (2021-2022) and 7 interviews with airport officials (2023). Research by scientists dealing with sustainable development issues in the aviation industry security focuses on finding solutions that constitute the so-called 'golden mean' between appropriate efficiency and high levels of system safety and reliability (including human reliability). The features mentioned above have been repeatedly investigated in various studies, but always individually—to date, no one has proposed a solution indicating the balance point of all the abovementioned features. Here we propose a solution to this research gap: a model for assessing the configuration of airport security control systems. The model allows for the optimal configuration of airport security control systems. The multi-level model validation presented in the article was performed, among others, based on one of the airports in Poland, and showed that the correct configuration of the system can bring energy savings of 913,500 kWh/year in the case of large international airports. Introduction: Worldwide, one in six individuals live with a disability. Many people continue to experience disabling situations, particularly when travelling. Travel can be an important part of the lives of many people, including people with disabilities. Barriers to accessing air travel can lead to a reluctance to travel for these potential passengers. As early as the flight planning stage, options to facilitate accessibility are limited. At airports, passengers must travel long distances in areas where navigation is complex, and accessibility limited. Furthermore, few aircraft are accessible. The travel experience can have adverse effects on the health of people with disabilities. Practices are sometimes not inclusive, not always available, and may not address the full spectrum of possible needs. The objective of this study is to provide a state of art on accessibility features available to people with disabilities in the busiest international airports. Methods: A scoping review of practices in airport accessibility was done. A search strategy was deployed in 4 databases (Avery index to architectural periodicals, Medline, CINAHL, and Web of science). The official websites of the 35 busiest airports were exhaustively consulted. All information regarding accessibility measures and inclusive services were extracted. Results: 31 scientific articles, out of 3,640 screened, and all extracted data from airports' website were considered for synthesis. While efforts are made in major airports, there is a great inconsistency in accessibility features. Both facilitators and challenges are encountered by people with disabilities at every stage of air travel. These stages include journey planning; getting to and from the airport, obtain human assistance, navigate in the premises, check in, security screening, using facilities, boarding and disembarking, customs and immigration procedures, and luggage management. Discussion: Services need to be extensively planned, placing a significant burden on passengers. The disability-centric perspective disregard passengers' unique needs and capabilities, leading to a sense of dehumanization. The complexity of airport organizations, shared responsibilities, limited communication, training challenges can deter accessibility initiatives and create discomfort during travel. The aim of the paper is to describe industrial snow as a meteorological phenomenon of anthropological origin and the physical principle of its formation in the context of Kosice Airport, with international traffic. The research also focused on selected economic impacts on the operation of Kosice Airport, which is located next to the large industrial complex U.S. Steel Kosice. There are only a few international airports in the world that are affected by industrial snow, which is why we also focus on the economic impact of maintaining the operational areas of the airport to the required extent according to standards. A solution to the problem is also proposed based on the scientific works of experts who focused their scientific activities on the issue of industrial snow production. In addition to the differences in the formation of industrial and natural snow, the article mentions the differences in the structure and properties of crystalline elements and their distribution according to the external meteorological conditions under which they are formed. The paper identifies meteorological situations that are favorable for the formation of industrial snow and due to the mutual location of the airport and the industrial complex, the airport is affected by industrial snow. This article describes the selected economic impacts of industrial snowfall on air traffic at Kosice Airport from 2017-2022. These were expressed after providing data from the airfield maintenance department of the Kosice Airport. At the same time, airport maintenance workers shared their unique experiences with this special meteorological phenomenon. The outcome of this research brings the unique method of industrial snow day occurrence and helps to explain this rare weather phenomenon and its impact on transport and social aspects. Airport security is always a high priority. It includes the control of passengers, luggage and vehicles to prevent possible threats. The relevance of these measures does not decrease due to constant changes in methods of threats and technologies for their prevention. In the Convention on the International Organization of Civil Aviation (Appendix 19), the ICAO proposed "Management of Flight Safety" in which changes to the global approach to ANS are indicated. Implementation at the global, regional and state levels includes areas of responsibility of organizational structures, necessary procedures and political aspects. One of the main problems of security analysis is the choice of the appropriate mathematical apparatus. Accordingly, the development and analysis of air safety data management is an important tool for increasing the level of control and decision-making regarding processes and procedures, which will guarantee positive results when making the most effective management decisions. A linear regression model can be useful for analyzing some aspects of aviation security at airports. For example, it can be used to predict the prior probability of certain events based on certain factors. Using a linear regression model, the author substantiated the influence of factors (world aviation safety index, passenger traffic and tariffs) on the level of aviation safety at airports. However, safety in aviation is a complex issue that includes many aspects, therefore, to fully ensure safety, it may be necessary a combination of different models and approaches. Although traveling can be enjoyable, many individuals do not enjoy spending time at airports. However, research has shown that airport lounges are becoming increasingly popular as a space for transit passengers, with many air travelers using them multiple times for various reasons, before their flight or during a layover. This research aimed to study the features of the airport lounge identified by the 15 transit passengers, their lounge experience and services deemed salient to air passengers during long-haul travel. The data were collected by utilizing a qualitative method, non-probability purposive sampling, and semi-structured interviews. The qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Qualitatively, three themes manifest in transit passengers' airport lounge experience: added value services, amenities and human touch. Results suggest that a lounge should provide a more personalized and comfortable experience, allowing passengers to make the most of their time before departure and providing tourism marketers with practical insights into the creation of a strategy for airline lounges that focuses on meeting the needs and desires of transit passengers and emphasizing the unique experience offered by the lounges. This study offers valuable insights into the practical consequences for airport lounge vendors and stop-over destination service providers with a better understanding of transit preferences.
