We present the first measurement of the missing energy due to nuclear effects in monoenergetic, muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon, originating from $K^+ \rightarrow \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ decay-at-rest ($E_{\nu_\mu}=235.5$ MeV), performed with the JSNS$^2$ liquid scintillator based experiment. Towards characterizing the neutrino interaction, ostensibly $\nu_\mu n \rightarrow \mu^- p$ or $\nu_\mu$$^{12}\mathrm{C}$ $\rightarrow \mu^-$$^{12}\mathrm{N}$, and in analogy to similar electron scattering based measurements, we define the missing energy as the energy transferred to the nucleus ($\omega$) minus the kinetic energy of the outgoing proton(s), $E_{m} \equiv \omega-\sum T_p$, and relate this to visible energy in the detector, $E_{m}=E_{\nu_\mu}~(235.5~\mathrm{MeV})-m_\mu~(105.7~\mathrm{MeV}) - E_{vis}$. The missing energy, which is naively expected to be zero in the absence of nuclear effects (e.g. nucleon separation energy, Fermi momenta, and final-state interactions), is uniquely sensitive to many aspects of the interaction, and has previously been inaccessible with neutrinos. The shape-only, differential cross section measurement reported, based on a $(77\pm3)$% pure double-coincidence KDAR signal (621 total events), provides an important benchmark for models and event generators at 100s-of-MeV neutrino energies, characterized by the difficult-to-model transition region between neutrino-nucleus and neutrino-nucleon scattering, and relevant for applications in nuclear physics, neutrino oscillation measurements, and Type-II supernova studies.

We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to \pi \!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $\Lambda(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $\pi \! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $\pi \! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to \pi \! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $\Gamma_{\pi \Lambda N} \sim \Gamma_{\pi \Sigma N}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $\Lambda$(1405).

The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment designed for the search for sterile neutrinos. The experiment is currently at the stage of the second phase named JSNS$^{2}$-II with two detectors at near and far locations from the neutrino source. One of the key components of the experiment is an acrylic vessel, that is used for the target volume for the detection of the anti-neutrinos. The specifications, design, and measured properties of the acrylic vessel are described.

JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment which searches for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $\bar{\nu}_{\mu} \to \bar{\nu}_{e}$ appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. The data taking of JSNS$^2$ have been performed from 2021. In this manuscript, a study of the accidental background is presented. We measured a set of $\pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp$, $\pi^0\Sigma^0$, and $\pi^-\Sigma^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $\pi\Sigma$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $\Lambda(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that is searching for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $\bar{\nu}_{\mu} \to \bar{\nu}_{e}$ appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. Before dedicated data taking in the first-half of 2021, we performed a commissioning run for 10 days in June 2020. Using the data obtained in this commissioning run, in this paper, we present an estimate of the correlated background which imitates the $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ signal in a sterile neutrino search. $\bar K$-nuclear bound systems, kaonic nuclei, have been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K N$ interaction in $I = 0$ channels. Recently, we demonstrated that kaonic nuclei can be produced via in-flight $(K^-,N)$ reactions using the low-momentum DC kaon beam at the J-PARC E15 experiment. We observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $K^-pp$, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K N$ ($\Lambda(1405)$) to $\bar K NNNN$. The JSNS^2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for oscillations involving a sterile neutrino in the eV^2 mass-splitting range. The experiment will search for the appearance of electron antineutrinos oscillated from muon antineutrinos. The electron antineutrinos are detected via the inverse beta decay process using a liquid scintillator detector. A 1MW beam of 3 GeV protons incident on a spallation neutron target produces an intense and pulsed neutrino source from pion, muon, and kaon decay at rest. The JSNS^2 detector is located 24 m away from the neutrino source and began operation from June 2020. The detector contains 17 tonnes of gadolinium (Gd) loaded liquid scintillator (LS) in an acrylic vessel, as a neutrino target. It is surrounded by 31 tonnes of unloaded LS in a stainless steel tank. Optical photons produced in LS are viewed by 120 R7081 Hamamatsu 10-inch Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). This article describes the goal and expected sensitivity of the JSNS$^2$-II experiment at J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). The JSNS$^2$-II experiment is the second phase of the JSNS$^2$ experiment (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) with two detectors which are located in 24 m (an existing detector) and 48 m (new one) baselines to improve the sensitivity of the search for sterile neutrinos, especially in the low $\Delta m^2$ region, which has been indicated by the global fit of the appearance mode. The new second detector has a similar structure as the existing JSNS$^2$ detector, which is already working. To compensate for the reduction of the neutrino flux due to the distance from the mercury target, the target mass of the Gd-loaded liquid scintillator which is the Linear AlkylBenzene (LAB) based liquid scintillator inside the acrylic vessel is 35 tons. To keep the same photo-coverage of the detector as the first detector, we will surround the acrylic vessel with 240 PMTs. With this experimental setup and 5 years (times 1 MW beam power) exposure, the sensitivity of the JSNS$^2$-II is significantly improved compared to the current JSNS$^2$, especially in the low $\Delta m^2$ oscillation parameter region. The JSNS$^2$-II can also confirm or refute the most of the oscillation parameters' space preferred by the previous experiments with 3 sigma C.L.. Considering these situations and world wide status of the sterile neutrino searches, we are eager to start the data taking with the two detector configuration from 2023. The fund to build the second detector was already secured.

In a neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) experiment, energy resolution is important to distinguish between $0\nu\beta\beta$ and background events. CAlcium fluoride for studies of Neutrino and Dark matters by Low Energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) discerns the $0\nu\beta\beta$ of $^{48}$Ca using a CaF$_2$ scintillator as the detector and source. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) collect scintillation photons. At the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca, the current energy resolution (2.6%) exceeds the ideal statistical fluctuation of the number of photoelectrons (1.6%). Because of CaF$_2$'s long decay constant of 1000 ns, a signal integration within 4000 ns is used to calculate the energy. The baseline fluctuation ($\sigma_{baseline}$) is accumulated in the signal integration, thus degrading the energy resolution. This paper studies $\sigma_{baseline}$ in the CANDLES detector, which severely degrades the resolution by 1% at the Q-value of $^{48}$Ca. To avoid $\sigma_{\rm baseline}$, photon counting can be used to obtain the number of photoelectrons in each PMT; however, a significant photoelectron signal overlapping probability in each PMT causes missing photoelectrons in counting and reduces the energy resolution. "Partial photon counting" reduces $\sigma_{baseline}$ and minimizes photoelectron loss. We obtain improved energy resolutions of 4.5-4.0% at 1460.8 keV ($\gamma$-ray of $^{40}$K), and 3.3-2.9% at 2614.5 keV ($\gamma$-ray of $^{208}$Tl). The energy resolution at the Q-value is estimated to be improved from 2.6% to 2.2%, and the detector sensitivity for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ half-life of $^{48}$Ca can be improved by 1.09 times., Comment: This manuscript is prepared for submission to IEEE Transaction on Nuclear Science. We developed a CANDLES-III system to study the neutrino-less double beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{48}$Ca. The proposed system employs 96 CaF$_{2}$ scintillation crystals (305 kg) with natural Ca ($^{\rm nat.}$Ca) isotope which corresponds 350\,g of $^{48}$Ca. External backgrounds were rejected using a 4$\pi$ active shield of a liquid scintillator surrounding the CaF$_2$ crystals. The internal backgrounds caused by the radioactive impurities within the CaF$_2$ crystals can be reduced effectively through analysis of the signal pulse shape. We analyzed the data obtained in the Kamioka underground for a live-time of 130.4\,days to evaluate the feasibility of the low background measurement with the CANDLES-III detector. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we estimated the background rate from the radioactive impurities in the CaF$_{2}$ crystals and the rate of high energy $\gamma$-rays caused by the (n, $\gamma$) reactions induced by environmental neutrons. The expected background rate was in a good agreement with the measured rate, i.e., approximately 10$^{-3}$ events/keV/yr/(kg of $^{\rm nat.}$Ca), in the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ window. In conclusion, the background candidates were estimated properly by comparing the measured energy spectrum with the background simulations. With this measurement method, we performed the first search for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay in a low background condition using a detector with a Ca isotope, in which the Ca present was not enriched, in a scale of hundreds of kg. We have performed an exclusive measurement of the $K^{-}+\! ~^{3}{\rm He} \to \Lambda pn$ reaction at an incident kaon momentum of $1\ {\rm GeV}/c$.In the $\Lambda p$ invariant mass spectrum, a clear peak was observed below the mass threshold of $\bar{K}\!+\!N\!+\!N$, as a signal of the kaonic nuclear bound state, $\bar{K}NN$.The binding energy, decay width, and $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor of this state were observed to be $B_{K} = 42\pm3({\rm stat.})^{+3}_{-4}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, $\Gamma_{K} = 100\pm7({\rm stat.})^{+19}_{-9}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, and $Q_{K} = 383\pm11({\rm stat.})^{+4}_{-1}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}/c$, respectively. The total production cross-section of $\bar{K}NN$, determined by its $\Lambda p$ decay mode, was $\sigma^{tot}_{K} \cdot BR_{\Lambda p} = 9.3\pm0.8({\rm stat.})^{+1.4}_{-1.0}({\rm syst.})\ \mu{\rm b}$.We estimated the branching ratio of the $\bar{K}NN$ state to the $\Lambda p$ and $\Sigma^{0}p$ decay modes as $BR_{\Lambda p}/BR_{\Sigma^{0}p} \sim 1.7$, by assuming that the physical processes leading to the $\Sigma N\!N$ final states are analogous to those of $\Lambda pn$., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS$^{2}$ inner detector is filled with 17 tons of gadolinium(Gd)-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of unloaded LS in the intermediate $\gamma$-catcher and an optically separated outer veto volumes. A total of 120 10-inch photomultiplier tubes observe the scintillating optical photons and each analog waveform is stored with the flash analog-to-digital converters. The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for neutrino oscillations over a 24\,m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS$^{2}$ inner detector is filled with 17 tons of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) and both the intermediate $\gamma$-catcher and the optically separated outer veto are filled with un-loaded LS. Optical photons from scintillation are observed by 120 Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). A total of 130 PMTs for the JSNS2 experiment were both donated by other experiments and purchased from Hamamatsu. Donated PMTs were purchased around 10 years ago, therefore JSNS$^{2}$ did pre-calibration of the PMTs including the purchased PMTs. 123 PMTs demonstrated acceptable performance for the JSNS$^{2}$ experiment, and 120 PMTs were installed in the detector.

The JSNS$^2$ experiment is aimed to search for sterile neutrino oscillations using a neutrino beam from muon decays at rest. The JSNS$^2$ detector contains 17 tons of 0.1\% gadolinium (Gd) loaded liquid scintillator (LS) as a neutrino target. Detector construction was completed in the spring of 2020. A slow control and monitoring system (SCMS) was implemented for reliable control and quick monitoring of the detector operational status and environmental conditions. It issues an alarm if any of the monitored parameters exceed a preset acceptable range. The SCMS monitors the high voltage (HV) of the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the LS level in the detector, possible LS overflow and leakage, the temperature and air pressure in the detector, the humidity of the experimental hall, and the LS flow rate during filling and extraction. An initial 10 days of data-taking with a neutrino beam was done following a successful commissioning of the detector and SCMS in June 2020. This write-up document is a summary of International workshop on the project for the extended hadron experimental facility which was held from March 26 to 28, 2018 at KEK Tokai Campus. This document is a collection of Letter Of Intents (LOIs) related to the proposed beam lines in the extended hadron experimental facility at J-PARC.

A new $\mu$TCA DAQ system was introduced in CANDLES experiment with SpaceWire-to-GigabitEthernet (SpaceWire-GigabitEthernet) network for data readout and Flash Analog-to-Digital Converters (FADCs). With SpaceWire-GigabitEthernet, we can construct a flexible DAQ network with multi-path access to FADCs by using off-the-shelf computers. FADCs are equipped 8 event buffers, which act as de-randomizer to detect sequential decays from the background. SpaceWire-GigabitEthernet has high latency (about 100 $\mu$sec) due to long turnaround time, while GigabitEthernet has high throughput. To reduce dead-time, we developed the DAQ system with 4 "crate-parallel" (modules in crates are read in parallel) reading threads. As a result, the readout time is reduced by 4 times: 40 msec down to 10 msec. With improved performance, it is expected to achieve higher background suppression for CANDLES experiment. Moreover, for energy calibration, "event-parallel" reading process (events are read in parallel) is also introduced to reduce measurement time. We observed a distinct peak in the $\Lambda p$ invariant mass spectrum of $^{3}{\rm He}(K^-, \, \Lambda p)n$, well below the mass threshold of $m_K + 2 m_p$. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region $q = 350 \sim 650$ MeV/$c$, one can clearly separate the peak from the quasi-free process, $\overline{K}N \rightarrow \overline{K}N$ followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons $\overline{K}NN \rightarrow \Lambda N $. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit-Wigner pole position at $B_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 47 \pm 3 \, (stat.) \,^{+3}_{-6} \,(sys.)$ MeV having a width $\Gamma_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 115 \pm 7 \, (stat.) \,^{+10}_{-9} \,(sys.)$ MeV, and the $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter $Q_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 381 \pm 14 \, (stat.)\,^{+57}_{-0} \,(sys.)$ MeV/$c$, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness -- "$K^-pp$"., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

In this document, the technical details of the JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment are described. The search for sterile neutrinos is currently one of the hottest topics in neutrino physics. The JSNS$^2$ experiment aims to search for the existence of neutrino oscillations with $\Delta m^2$ near 1 eV$^2$ at the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). A 1 MW beam of 3 GeV protons incident on a spallation neutron target produces an intense neutrino beam from muon decay at rest. Neutrinos come predominantly from $\mu^+$ decay: $\mu^{+} \to e^{+} + \bar{\nu}_{\mu} + \nu_{e}$. The experiment will search for $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ to $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ oscillations which are detected by the inverse beta decay interaction $\bar{\nu}_{e} + p \to e^{+} + n$, followed by gammas from neutron capture on Gd. The detector has a fiducial volume of 17 tons and is located 24 meters away from the mercury target. JSNS$^2$ offers the ultimate direct test of the LSND anomaly. In addition to the sterile neutrino search, the physics program includes cross section measurements with neutrinos with a few 10's of MeV from muon decay at rest and with monochromatic 236 MeV neutrinos from kaon decay at rest. These cross sections are relevant for our understanding of supernova explosions and nuclear physics.

We searched for the bound state of the neutron-rich $\Lambda$-hypernucleus ${}^{6}_{\Lambda}$H, using the ${}^{6}$Li($\pi^{-}, K^{+}$)X double charge-exchange reaction at a $\pi^{-}$ beam momentum of 1.2 GeV/c at J-PARC. A total of $1.4 \times 10^{12}$ $\pi^{-}$ was driven onto a ${}^{6}$Li target of 3.5-g/$\rm cm^2$ thickness. No event was observed below the bound threshold, i.e., the mass of ${}^{4}_{\Lambda}$H + 2n, in the missing-mass spectrum of the ${}^{6}$Li($\pi^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the $2^{\circ}$ < $\theta_{\pi K}$ < $20^{\circ}$ angular range. Furthermore, no event was found up to 2.8 MeV/$c^2$ above the bound threshold. We obtained the the double-differential cross section spectra of the ${}^{6}$Li($\pi^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the angular range of $2^{\circ}$ < $\theta_{\pi K}$ < $14^{\circ}$. An upper limit of 0.56 nb/sr (90% C.L.) was obtained for the production cross section of the ${}^{6}_{\Lambda}$H hypernucleus bound state. In addition, not only the bound state region, but also the $\Lambda$ continuum region and part of the $\Sigma^{-}$ quasi-free production region of the ${}^{6}$Li($\pi^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction, were obtained with high statistics. The present missing-mass spectrum will facilitate the investigation of the $\Sigma^{-}$-nucleus optical potential for $\Sigma^{-}$-${}^{5}$He through spectrum shape analysis., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures

The JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC E56) experiment aims to search for a sterile neutrino at the J-PARC Materials and Life Sciences Experimental Facility (MLF). After the submission of a proposal to the J-PARC PAC, Stage-1 approval was granted to the JSNS$^2$ experiment on April 2015.This approval followed a series of background measurements which were performed in 2014. Recently, funding (the grant-in-aid for scientific research (S)) in Japan for building one 25~ton fiducial volume detector module was approved for the experiment. Therefore, we aim to start the experiment with one detector in JFY2018-2019. We are now working to produce precise cost estimates and schedule for construction, noting that most of the detector components can be produced within one year from the date of order. This will be reported at the next PAC meeting. In parallel to the detector construction schedule, JSNS$^2$ will submit a Technical Design report (TDR) to obtain the Stage-2 approval from the J-PARC PAC.The recent progress of the R$\&$D efforts towards this TDR are shown in this report. In particular, the R$\&$D status of the liquid scintillator, cosmic ray veto system, and software are shown. We have performed a test-experiment using 1.6~L of liquid scintillator at the 3rd floor of the MLF building in order to determine the identities of non-neutrino background particles coming to this detector location during the proton bunch. This is the so-called "MLF 2015AU0001" experiment. We briefly show preliminary results from this test-experiment.

The $\phi$-$\Lambda(1520)$ interference effect in the $\gamma p\to K^+K^-p$ reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between $\phi$ and $\Lambda(1520)$ production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when $K^+K^-$ pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the $\sqrt{s}=2.1$ GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for $\phi$ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $\Lambda p$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,\Lambda p)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,\Lambda p)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $\Lambda pn$ final state. The observed $\Lambda p n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $\Lambda p$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $\chi^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $\Gamma_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5, Comment: 12pages, 8 figures

The JSNS2 (J-PARC E56) experiment aims to search for sterile neutrinos at the J-PARC Materials and Life Sciences Experimental Facility (MLF).After the submission of a proposal to the J-PARC PAC, stage-1 approval was granted to the JSNS2 experiment. The approval followed a series of background measurements which were performed in 2014. Subsequent for stage-1 approval, the JSNS2 collaboration has made continuous efforts to write a Technical Design Report (TDR).This TDR will include two major items as discussed in the previous status report for the 20th J-PARC PAC: (1) A realistic detector location (2) Well understood and realistic detector performance using simulation studies, primarily in consideration of fast neutron rejection. Since August we have been in discussions with MLF staff regarding an appropriate detector location. We are also in the process of setting up a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation framework in order to study detector's performance in realistic conditions. In addition, we have pursued hardware R&D work for the liquid scintillator (LS) and to improve the dynamic range of the 10" photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The LS R&D works includes Cherenkov studies inside the LS, and a Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) study with a test-beam, performed at Tohoku University. We also estimate the PSD performance of a full-sized detector using a detailed MC simulation. In this status report, we describe progress on this work.

On April 2015, the J-PARC E56 (JSNS2: J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search using neutrinos from J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment officially obtained stage-1 approval from J-PARC. We have since started to perform liquid scintillator R&D for improving energy resolution and fast neutron rejection. Also, we are studying Avalanche Photo-Diodes (SiPM) inside the liquid scintillator. In addition to the R&D work, a background measurement for the proton beam bunch timing using a small liquid scintillator volume was planned, and the safety discussions for the measurement have been done. Level structure of the $^{12}_{\Lambda}$C hypernucleus was precisely determined by means of $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. We identified four $\gamma$-ray transitions via the $^{12}$C$(\pi^{+},K^{+}\gamma)$ reaction using a germanium detector array, Hyperball2. The spacing of the ground-state doublet $(2^{-}_{1},1^{-}_{1})$ was measured to be $161.5\pm0.3\text{(stat)}\pm0.3\text{(syst)}$\,keV from the direct $M1$ transition. Excitation energies of the $1^{-}_{2}$ and $1^{-}_{3}$ states were measured to be $2832\pm3\pm4$\,keV and $6050\pm8\pm7$\,keV, respectively. The obtained level energies provide definitive references for the reaction spectroscopy of $\Lambda$ hypernuclei.

The J-PARC E56 experiment aims to search for sterile neutrinos at the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). In order to examine the feasibility of the experiment, we measured the background rates of different detector candidate sites, which are located at the third floor of the MLF, using a detector consisting of plastic scintillators with a fiducial mass of 500 kg. The result of the measurements is described in this article. At the 17th J-PARC PAC, which was held on September 2013, we proposed the sterile neutrino search at J-PARC MLF. After reviewing the proposal, PAC recommended to have a background measurement at the detector's candidate site location in their report to investigate whether the background rates can be manageable for the real experiment or not. Therefore, we have performed the background measurements (MLF; 2013BU1301 test experiment) during the summer of 2014, also following the 18th J-PARC PAC recommendations, and the measurements results are described here.

The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

The pentaquark $\Theta^+$ has been searched for via the $\pi^-p \to K^-X$ reaction with beam momenta of 1.92 and 2.01 GeV/$c$ at J-PARC. A missing mass resolution of 2 MeV (FWHM) was achieved but no sharp peak structure was observed. The upper limits on the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle from 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame were found to be less than 0.28 $\mu$b/sr at the 90\% confidence level for both the 1.92- and 2.01-GeV/$c$ data. The systematic uncertainty of the upper limits was controlled within 10\%. Constraints on the $\Theta^+$ decay width were also evaluated with a theoretical calculation using effective Lagrangian. The present result implies that the width should be less than 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the spin-parity of $1/2^+$ and $1/2^-$, respectively., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures; published version

We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, $^6_{\Lambda}$H, by the $^6$Li($\pi^-,K^+$) reaction at $p_{\pi^-}$ =1.2 GeV/$c$. The obtained missing mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the $^6_{\Lambda}$H hypernucleus neither below nor above the $^4_{\Lambda}$H$+2n$ particle decay threshold. An upper limit of the production cross section for the bound $^6_{\Lambda}$H hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90% confidence level., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, published version

We propose a definite search for sterile neutrinos at the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). With the 3 GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) and spallation neutron target, an intense neutrino beam from muon decay at rest (DAR) is available. Neutrinos come from \mu+ decay, and the oscillation to be searched for is (anti \nu \mu -> anti \nu e) which is detected by the inverse \beta decay interaction (anti \nu e + p -> e+ + n), followed by a gamma from neutron capture. The unique features of the proposed experiment, compared with the LSND and experiments using horn focused beams, are; (1) The pulsed beam with about 600 ns spill width from J-PARC RCS and muon long lifetime allow us to select neutrinos from \mu DAR only. (2) Due to nuclear absorption of \pi- and \mu-, neutrinos from \mu- decay are suppressed to about the $10^{-3}$ level. (3) Neutrino cross sections are well known. The inverse \beta decay cross section is known to be a few percent accuracy. (4) The neutrino energy can be calculated from positron energy by adding ~1.8 MeV. (5) The anti \nu \mu and \nu e fluxes have different and well defined spectra. This allows us to separate oscillated signals from those due to \mu- decay contamination. We propose to proceed with the oscillation search in steps since the region of \Delta m^2 to be searched can be anywhere between sub-eV^2 to several tens of eV^2. We start to examine the large \Delta m^2 region, which can be done with short baseline at first. At close distance to the MLF target gives a high neutrino flux, and allows us to use relatively small detector. If no definitive positive signal is found, a future option exists to cover small \Delta m^2 region. This needs a relatively long baseline and requires a large detector to compensate for the reduced neutrino flux.

A search for $K^-pp$ bound state (the lightest kaonic nucleus) has been performed using the $\gamma d \rightarrow K^+ \pi^- \rm{X}$ reaction at E$_\gamma$=1.5-2.4 GeV at LEPS/SPring-8. The differential cross section of $K^+ \pi^-$ photo-production off deuterium has been measured for the first time in this energy region, and a bump structure was searched for in the inclusive missing mass spectrum. A statistically significant bump structure was not observed in the region from 2.22 to 2.36 GeV/$c^2$, and the upper limits of the differential cross section for the $K^-pp$ bound state production were determined to be 0.1$-$0.7 $\mu$ b (95$%$ confidence level) for a set of assumed binding energy and width values.

We report the measurement of differential cross sections for $\omega$ and $\eta'$ photoproduction from protons at backward angles ($-1.0<\cos\Theta_{C.M}^{X}<-0.8$) using linearly polarized photons at $E_{\gamma}=$$1.5-3.0$ GeV. Differential cross sections for $\omega$ mesons are larger than the predicted $u$-channel contribution in the energy range $2.0\leq\sqrt{s}\leq2.4$ GeV. The differential cross sections for $\omega$ and $\eta'$ mesons become closer to the predicted $u$-channel contribution at $\sqrt{s}>2.4$ GeV. A bump structure in the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the differential cross sections for $\eta'$ mesons was observed at $\sqrt{s}\sim$2.35 GeV., Comment: 15pages 4figures

A novel experiment, aiming at demonstrating the feasibility of hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy-ion beams, was conducted. Using the invariant mass method, the spectroscopy of hypernuclear products of 6Li projectiles on a carbon target at 2 AGeV was performed. Signals of the \Lambda-hyperon and 3\Lambda H and 4\Lambda H hypernuclei were observed for final states of p+\pi^-, 3He+\pi^- and 4He+\pi^-, respectively, with significance values of 6.7, 4.7 and 4.9\sigma. By analyzing the proper decay time from secondary vertex distribution with the unbinned maximum likelihood fitting method, their lifetime values were deduced to be $262 ^{+56}_{-43} \pm 45$ ps for \Lambda, $183 ^{+42}_{-32} \pm 37$ ps for 3\Lambda H, and $140 ^{+48}_{-33}\pm 35 $ ps for 4\Lambda H., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Physics A, v2 : revised few references

We have searched for a bound state of kaon and pion denoted by $X$. The $X$ was conjectured to explain the so-called $\Theta^+$ resonance as a bound state of kaon, pion and nucleon. This model explains almost all properties of the $\Theta^+$, however, the model works only if the $K \pi$ interaction is strongly attractive. It is so strong that it could make a bound state $X$. Here we report a result of the search for the $X$ by using the $K^+ + N \rightarrow X^+ + N$ reaction at P$_K\sim$ 1.2 GeV/c. The $X^+ \rightarrow K^+ \gamma \gamma$ decay produces $K^+$ in momentum region where other processes cannot fill. We observed signature of the $X^+$ with statistical significance of 2 $\sigma$. Production cross section of $X$ with respect to that of $\pi^0$ is 1$\pm$0.5% if we take it as an evidence and 1.5% if we set an upper limit., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The $\Theta^+$ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the $\pi^-p\to K^-X$ reaction in a missing-mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/$c^2$(FWHM) at J-PARC. $\pi^-$ meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with the beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/$c$. No peak structure corresponding to the $\Theta^+$ mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame was obtained to be 0.26 $\mu$b/sr in the mass region of 1.51$-$1.55 GeV/$c^2$.The upper limit of the $\Theta^+$ decay width using the effective Lagrangian approach was obtained to be 0.72 MeV/$c^2$ and 3.1 MeV/$c^2$ for $J^P_{\Theta}=1/2^+$ and $J^P_{\Theta}=1/2^-$, respectively., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We discuss the usefulness of the double charge-exchange reactions (DCX) for the production of the neutron-rich Lambda-hypernuclei. We believe the (pi-,K+) reaction is one of the most promising DCX reactions, and propose to produce the neutron-rich Lambda-hypernuclei, 6(Lambda)H and 9(Lambda)He, at the J-PARC 50 GeV PS by the reaction (J-PARC E10 experiment). The HypHI collaboration aims to perform a precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams at GSI and fAIR in order to study hypernuclei at extreme isospin, especially neutron rich hypernuclei to look insight hyperon-nucleon interactions in the neutron rich medium, and hypernuclear magnetic moments to investigate baryon properties in the nuclei. We are currently preparing for the first experiment with $^6$Li and $^{12}$C beams at 2 AGeV to demonstrate the feasibility of a precise hypernuclear spectroscopy by identifying $^{3}_{\Lambda}$H, $^{4}_{\Lambda}$H and $^{5}_{\Lambda}$He. The first physics experiment on these hypernuclei is planned for 2009. Differential cross sections for $\gamma p \to K^+\Lambda(1405)$ and $\gamma p \to K^+\Sigma^0(1385)$ reactions have been measured in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 2.4 GeV and the angular range of $0.8<\cos(\Theta)<1.0$ for the $K^+$ scattering angle in the center-of-mass system. This data is the first measurement of the $\Lambda(1405)$ photoproduction cross section. The lineshapes of \LamS measured in $\Sigma^+\pi^-$ and $\Sigma^-\pi^+$ decay modes were different with each other, indicating a strong interference of the isospin 0 and 1 terms of the $\Sigma\pi$ scattering amplitudes. The performance of scintillating fibre detectors was studied with electrons at the spectrometer facility of the Mainz microtron MAMI, as well as in a C-12 beam of 2 AGeV energy and in a beam of different particle species at GSI. Multi-anode photomultipliers were used to read out one or more bundles of 128 fibres each in different geometries. For electrons a time resolution of FWHM = 1 ns was measured in a single detector plane with a detection efficiency epsilon > 99%. A time resolution of 310 ps (FWHM) between two planes of fibres was achieved for carbon ions, leading to a FWHM = 220 ps for a single detector. The hit position residual was measured with a width of FWHM = 0.27 mm. The variation in the measured energy deposition was Delta E/E= 15-20% (FWHM) for carbon ions. In addition, the energy response to p/pi/d particles was studied. We have measured the angular correlation of the pair nucleons np and nn emitted from the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) of ^{12}_{Lambda}C produced via the (pi^+,K^+) reaction in coincidence measurement. The Lambda p -> np and Lambda n -> nn modes were clearly identified by measuring the back-to-back correlation of the emitted nucleon pairs which is the characteristic of two-body kinematics. From the measured nucleon pair numbers N_{nn} and N_{np}, the ratio Gamma_n/Gamma_p of the partial decay widths Gamma_n(Lambda n -> nn) and Gamma_p(Lambda p -> np) of ^{12}_{Lambda}C was extracted to be 0.51+-0.13(stat) +- 0.05(syst); this result is almost free from the ambiguity due to the nuclear final state interaction and 3-body decay process, which were inherent in the previous results. The obtained Gamma_n/Gamma_p ratio of ^{12}_{Lambda}C (p-shell) is close to that of ^5_{Lambda}He (s-shell). The asymmetry parameter alpha_p^NM for a proton exclusively emitted in the Lambda p -> np process was, for the first time, measured in the non-mesonic weak decay of a polarized 5_La,bda_He hypernucleus by selecting the proton-neutron pairs emitted in the back-to-back kinematics. The highly polarized 5_Lambda_He was abundantly produced with the (pi+,K+) reaction at 1.05GeV/c in the scattering angular range of +-15$ degrees. The obtained value alpha_p^NM=0.31+-0.22, as well as that for inclusive protons, alpha_p^NM=0.11+-0.08+-0.04, largely contradicts recent theoretical values of around -0.6, although these calculations well reproduce the branching ratios of non-mesonic weak decay., Comment: 4pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

We performed a coincidence measurement of two nucleons emitted from the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) of ^{5}_{\Lambda}He formed via the ^{6}Li(\pi^+,K^+) reaction. The energies of two nucleons and the pair number distributions in the opening angle between them were measured. In both np and nn pairs, we observed a clean back-to-back correlation coming from the two-body decay of \Lambda p --> n p and \Lambda n --> n n, respectively. The ratio of the nucleon pair numbers was N_{nn}/N_{np}=0.45 \pm 0.11(stat)\pm 0.03(syst) in the kinematic region of cos(theta_{NN}) < -0.8. Since each decay mode was exclusively detected, the measured ratio should be close to the ratio of \Gamma(\Lambda p --> np)/\Gamma(\Lambda n --> nn). We have measured both yields of neutron-proton and neutron-neutron pairs emitted from the non-mesonic weak decay process of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei produced via the (pi^+,K^+) reaction for the first time. We observed clean back-to-back correlation of the np- and nn-pairs in the coincidence spectra for both hypernuclei. The ratio of those back-to-back pair yields, Nnn / Nnp, must be close to the ratio of neutron- and proton-induced decay widths of the decay, Gn(Lambda n -> nn)/Gp(Lambda p -> np). We have measured the energy spectra of pions and protons emitted in the weak decay of 12_Lambda_C, 28_Lambda_Si, and Lambda_Fe hypernuclei produced via the (pi+, K+) reaction. The decay widths of the pi- mesonic decay (Lambda -> p + pi-) and the nonmesonic decay (Lambda + N -> N + N) were extracted. The present results demonstrate an increase of the mesonic decay width due to a distortion of the pion wave function in nuclear medium for the first time. The ratios of the neutron- to proton-induced nonmesonic decay widths, Gamma_n(Lambda + n -> n + n)/Gamma_p(Lambda + p -> n + p), were evaluated by a direct comparison of the measured proton energy spectra with the calculated ones.
