Abstract Most fine ambient particulate matter (PM2.5)-based epidemiological models use globalized concentration-response (CR) functions assuming that the toxicity of PM2.5 is solely mass-dependent without considering its chemical composition. Although oxidative potential (OP) has emerged as an alternate metric of PM2.5 toxicity, the association between PM2.5 mass and OP on a large spatial extent has not been investigated. In this study, we evaluate this relationship using 385 PM2.5 samples collected from 14 different sites across 4 different continents and using 5 different OP (and cytotoxicity) endpoints. Our results show that the relationship between PM2.5 mass vs. OP (and cytotoxicity) is largely non-linear due to significant differences in the intrinsic toxicity, resulting from a spatially heterogeneous chemical composition of PM2.5. These results emphasize the need to develop localized CR functions incorporating other measures of PM2.5 properties (e.g., OP) to better predict the PM2.5-attributed health burdens.

Abstract The World Health Organization estimates that air pollution causes approximately seven million premature deaths worldwide each year. Solutions to air pollution are well known, yet this rarely equates to easily actionable. Here we demonstrate how art science collaboration can successfully highlight the issue of air pollution and create wider civic discourse around its amelioration. We document a light painting photographic technique that uses data from calibrated low-cost particulate matter sensors to measure and depict air pollution. We also use a postcard technique to grasp individuals’ sentiments regarding air pollution. The photographs from three countries, Ethiopia, India and United Kingdom, visually highlight the importance of location and occupation upon human exposure. The photographs are used as a proxy to communicate and create dialogues, spaces and places about air pollution. The sentiment analysis shows how this approach can foster awareness and create agency for stakeholders to take actions to tackle air pollution.

Silent estrus results in spread-out kidding and extended inter-kidding interval in goats. Progesterone (P4) priming for 12-14 days could be one of the approaches for estrus induction with optimum fertility. The present work was carried to comparatively assess the duration of P4 priming on estrus and fertility in silent estrus goats. Sirohi does (n=18) with a history of anestrus and high basal P4 in paired samples were equally divided into three groups. Does in P-0 d group received 200 IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin by intramuscular route. Does in group second and third were subjected to per-vaginal P4 sponges for 7 (P-7 d) and 14 (P-14 d) days, respectively and were given 200 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin following sponge withdrawal. Estrus was monitored for 72 h at 12 h intervals using teaser buck to record estrus per cent, induction time and duration. Estrus induction was highest in P-14 d (6/6) than P-0 d and P-7 d (4/6 and 5/6), respectively. Estrus induction time was shorter in P-7 d and P-14 d than P-0 d. The estrus duration was shortest in P-14 d group. The conception and pregnancy rate did not differ significantly among the groups, though all the does in P-14 d conceived. The fertility was non-significantly higher in P-14 d (6/6) and P-7 d group (5/5) than P-0 d (3/4). It could be concluded that P4 priming for 7-14 days in silent estrus does results in improved reproductive performances.

This prospective study investigated the association between lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] levels and adverse cardiac events in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for coronary artery disease. Among 600 patients, 79.16 % were male. Kaplan Meier analysis revealed significantly higher incidence rates of cardiac death, major adverse cardiac events, myocardial infarction, revascularization and stroke in patients with elevated Lp(a) (≥30 mg/dL). This study explores indoor air pollutant (PM1, PM2.5 and NO2) concentrations over a 15-week period during the COVID-19 pandemic in a typical suburban household in Oxford, UK. A multi-room intensive monitoring study was conducted in a single dwelling using 10 air quality sensors measuring real-time pollutant concentrations at 10 second intervals to assess temporal and spatial variability in PM1, PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations, identify pollution-prone areas, and investigate the impact of residents' activities on indoor air quality. Significant spatial variations in PM concentrations were observed within the study dwelling, with highest hourly concentrations (769.0 & 300.9 μg m−3 for PM2.5, and PM1, respectively) observed in the upstairs study room, which had poor ventilation. Cooking activities were identified as a major contributor to indoor particulate pollution, with peak concentrations aligning with cooking events. Indoor NO2 levels were typically higher than outdoor levels, particularly in the kitchen where a gas-cooking appliance was used. There was no significant association observed between outdoor and indoor PM concentrations; however, a clear correlation was evident between kitchen PM emissions and indoor levels. Similarly, outdoor NO2 had a limited influence on indoor air quality compared to kitchen activities. Indoor sources were found to dominate for both PM and NO2, with higher Indoor/Outdoor (I/O) ratios observed in the upstairs bedroom and the kitchen. Overall, our findings highlight the contribution of indoor air pollutant sources and domestic activities to indoor air pollution exposure, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic when people were typically spending more time in domestic settings. Our novel findings, which suggest high levels of pollutant concentrations in upstairs (first floor) rooms, underscore the necessity for targeted interventions. These interventions include the implementation of source control measures, effective ventilation strategies and occupant education for behaviour change, all aimed at improving indoor air quality and promoting healthier living environments.

The substantial increase in the human population dramatically strains food supplies. Farmers need healthy soil and natural minerals for traditional farming, and production takes a little longer time. The soil-free farming method known as vertical farming (VF) requires a small land and consumes a very small amount of water than conventional soil-dependent farming techniques. With modern technologies like hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics, the notion of the VF appears to have a promising future in urban areas where farming land is very expensive and scarce. VF faces difficulty in the simultaneous monitoring of multiple indicators, nutrition advice, and plant diagnosis systems. However, these issues can be resolved by implementing current technical advancements like artificial intelligence (AI)-based control techniques such as machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), the internet of things (IoT), image processing as well as computer vision. This article presents a thorough analysis of ML and IoT applications in VF system. The areas on which the attention is concentrated include disease detection, crop yield prediction, nutrition, and irrigation control management. In order to predict crop yield and crop diseases, the computer vision technique is investigated in view of the classification of distinct collections of crop images. This article also illustrates ML and IoT-based VF systems that can raise product quality and production over the long term. Assessment and evaluation of the knowledge-based VF system have also been outlined in the article with the potential outcomes, advantages, and limitations of ML and IoT in the VF system.

Abstract Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) technology emerges as a sustainable method to convert wet biomass, including food waste and municipal solid waste into high‐energy dense biocoal. This process, conducted at temperatures ranging from 180 to 260°C and pressures of 10–50 bar, effectively transforms the organic material in wet biomass into solid, liquid, and gaseous outputs. The solid product, biocoal, possesses a high carbon concentration and heating values on par with lignite coal, presenting a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Despite operational commercial‐scale HTC facilities globally, further adoption across various feedstocks can improve waste management and energy production. The process can achieve energy yields up to 80%, particularly at temperatures favoring the generation of secondary char with higher heating values. HTC not only aids in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through carbon sequestration in solid waste but also promotes environmental sustainability by yielding nutrient‐rich by‐products for agriculture. As a versatile and energy‐efficient solution, HTC technology is a pivotal innovation in waste‐to‐energy conversion, addressing the imperative for sustainable waste management. Other supplementary benefits are presented; they include higher employability, reduction of a nation's reliance on imported energy, and better waste control, therefore considering all pillars of sustainability. Future research should focus on optimizing process efficiency and exploring the broader applicability of HTC to various biomass feedstocks, enhancing its role in the global pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Abstract Opencast coal mining produces trash of soil and rock containing various minerals, that are usually dumped nearby the abandoned sites which causes severe environmental concern including the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) through oxidation pyrite minerals. The current study entailed assessing the potential production of AMD from an opencast coal mining region in Northeast part of India. In order to have a comprehensive overview of the AMD problem in Makum coalfield, the physico-chemical, geochemical, and petrological characteristics of the coal and overburden (OB) samples collected from the Makum coalfield (Northeast India) were thoroughly investigated. The maceral compositions reveal that coal features all three groups of macerals (liptinite, vitrinite, and inertinite), with a high concentration of liptinite indicating the coal of perhydrous, thereby rendering it more reactive. Pyrite (FeS2) oxidation kinetics were studied by conducting the aqueous leaching experiments of coal and (OB) samples to interpret the chemical weathering under controlled laboratory conditions of various temperature and time periods, and to replicate the actual mine site leaching. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was operated to detect the disposal of some precarious elements from coal and OB samples to the leachates during our controlled leaching experiment. The Rare earth element (REE) enrichment in the samples shows the anthropogenic incorporation of the REE in the coal and OB. These experiments reveal the change in conductivity, acid producing tendency, total dissolved solid(TDS), total Iron(Fe) and dissolved Sulfate(SO4 2−) ions on progress of the leaching experiments. Moreover, the discharge of FeS2 via atmospheric oxidation in laboratory condition undergoes a significant growth with the rise of temperature of the reaction systems in the environment and follows pseudo first order kinetics. A bio-remediative strategies is also reported in this paper to mitigate AMD water by employing size-segregated powdered limestone and water hyacinth plant in an indigenously developed site-specific prototype station. Apart from neutralisation of AMD water, this eco-friendly AMD remediation strategy demonstrates a reduction in PHEs concentrations in the treated AMD water.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of global mortality, motivating research into novel approaches for their management. Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)), a unique lipoprotein particle, has been implicated in atherosclerosis and thrombosis, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target for CVDs. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the association of Lp(a) levels with various cardiovascular parameters and events among patients with confirmed cardiovascular disease. Methodology: A prospective study was conducted, enrolling 600 participants, predominantly comprising males (79%), with a mean age of 52.78 ± 0.412 years diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. The follow-up was done for 18 months. Patient demographics, blood investigations, and occurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) were collected. SPSS version 21 was used to statistically analyze the relationships between elevated Lp(a) levels and factors such as age, glycated hemoglobin, mortality, MACE, cardiac death, target vessel revascularization, and stroke. Results: The study revealed significant (P < 0.05) associations between elevated Lp(a) levels and advanced age, increased glycated hemoglobin levels, as well as occurrences of all-cause mortality, MACE, cardiac death, target vessel revascularization, and stroke. Notably, a significant (P < 0.05), association between high Lp(a) levels and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) emerged, suggesting Lp(a)'s role in advanced cardiac events. Conclusion: The findings highlight the potential significance of Lp(a) as a notable risk factor in cardiovascular health. The observed associations between elevated Lp(a) and adverse cardiovascular events, including ACS, underscore its pathogenic role. Consequently, this study supports the rationale for further research into Lp(a)-specific therapeutic interventions, offering substantial promise in refining the management strategies for cardiovascular diseases.

Background: Thyroid disorders (TD) are the second most common endocrine disorders seen in pregnancy. TD is known to be associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Materials and Methods: This was a hospital based descriptive cross-sectional study. All the pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital from 1st July 2021 to 30th June 2022 were enrolled in the study, irrespective of their gestational age and gravida status. Pregnant women with diagnosed thyroid disorder and are on medication, multiple gestation, Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension and pregnant women with age more than 35 years were excluded from study. Thyroid function status of pregnant women was assessed by measuring serum levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and if the TSH value was deranged then they underwent free T3 and free T4 level. Based on the TFT reports they will be classified as euthyroid, subclinical hypothyroidism and overt hypothyroidism, subclinical hyperthyroidism and overt hyperthyroidism. Results: A total of 395 pregnant women were enrolled in this study. The mean age and standard deviation of pregnant women was 25.25± 4.76 years. Among 395 pregnant women 93(23.6%) pregnant women have thyroid disorder. Subclinical hypothyroidism and Overt hypothyroidism were 19% and 1.8% respectively. Subclinical and Overt hyperthyroidism were 1.5% and 1.3% respectively. Conclusion: The prevalence of thyroid disorder in pregnancy was 23.6%. The most common thyroid disorder observed was Subclinical hypothyroidism comprising 19% cases followed by overt hypothyroidism comprising 1.8% cases followed by Subclinical and Overt hyperthyroidism 1.5% and 1.3% cases respectively.

Abstract Sepsis is caused by dysregulated immune response to severe infection and hyper inflammation plays a central role in worsening the disease. The immunomodulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been evaluated as a therapeutic candidate for sepsis. Reconditioned monocytes (RM), generated from healthy human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) exhibit both macrophage and MSCs-like properties. RM were administered at different stages of sepsis in a mouse model. It reduced serum levels of IL6, MCP-1, IL-10, improved hypothermia, increased survival, and recovery from 0 to 66% when combined with antibiotics in the mouse model. The reduced human leucocyte antigen DR molecules expression on RM enables their co-culture with PBMCs of sepsis patients which resulted in reduced ROS production, and up-regulated TGF-β while down-regulating IL6, IL8, and IL-10 in-vitro. RM are potentially immunomodulatory, enhance survival in sepsis mouse model and modulate inflammatory behaviour of sepsis patient’s PBMCs.

The objective of this research was to assess the feasibility of remote sensing (RS) technology, specifically an unmanned aerial system (UAS), to estimate Bambara groundnut canopy state variables including leaf area index (LAI), canopy chlorophyll content (CCC), aboveground biomass (AGB), and fractional vegetation cover (FVC). RS and ground data were acquired during Malaysia’s 2018/2019 Bambara groundnut growing season at six phenological stages; vegetative, flowering, podding, podfilling, maturity, and senescence. Five vegetation indices (VIs) were determined from the RS data, resulting in single-stage VIs and cumulative VIs (∑VIs). Pearson’s correlation was used to investigate the relationship between canopy state variables and single stage VIs and ∑VIs over several stages. Linear parametric and non-linear non-parametric machine learning (ML) regressions including CatBoost Regressor (CBR), Random Forest Regressor (RFR), AdaBoost Regressor (ABR), Huber Regressor (HR), Multiple Linear Regressor (MLR), Theil-Sen Regressor (TSR), Partial Least Squares Regressor (PLSR), and Ridge Regressor (RR) were used to estimate canopy state variables using VIs/∑VIs as input. The best single-stage correlations between canopy state variables and VIs were observed at flowering (r > 0.50 in most cases). Moreover, ∑VIs acquired from vegetative to senescence stage had the strongest correlation with all measured canopy state variables (r > 0.70 in most cases). In estimating AGB, MLR achieved the best testing performance (R2 = 0.77, RMSE = 0.30). For CCC, RFR excelled with R2 of 0.85 and RMSE of 2.88. Most models performed well in FVC estimation with testing R2 of 0.98–0.99 and low RMSE. For LAI, MLR stood out in testing with R2 of 0.74, and RMSE of 0.63. Results demonstrate the UAS-based RS technology potential for estimating Bambara groundnut canopy variables.

Purpose Biochar application could be a sustainable way to enhance the nitrogen fixation in Bambara groundnut and other legumes. The research was conducted to study the effect of rice husk biochar and the Christmas Island Rock Phosphate application on the performance of Bambara groundnut in the study area. Method Two levels of rice husk biochar (0 and10 t/ha) and four levels of Christmas Island Rock Phosphate (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg P2O5/ha) were factorial combined to make a total of eight treatment combinations which were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. Data were collected on nitrogen content and fixation of the crop. Results Application of rice husk biochar increased the total mean of nitrogen content and N fixed by the crop from 120.0 and 90.9 kg/ha to 147.6 and 114.1 kg/ha, respectively. However, the effect of rock phosphate application on the nitrogen content and fixation of the crop was not observed. Conclusion Rice husk biochar application at10 t/ha alone was sufficient for nitrogen content and fixation of the crop. This implies that farmers in the study area can apply rice husk biochar at10 t/ha to enhance the performance of the crop.

Lemierre’s syndrome, or postanginal sepsis, is an uncommon but potentially fatal infection of the internal jugular vein. The combination of bacteremia, internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis, and metastatic septic emboli secondary to acute pharyngeal infections is characteristic of Lemierre’s syndrome. Isolated pathogens are typically oral anaerobic bacteria, most commonly Fusobacterium necrophorum. While the incidence of Lemierre’s syndrome has declined over the years, the proportion of cases caused by uncommonly implicated bacteria have been increasingly cited in the literature (1). In this case report, we introduce a novel presentation of Lemierre’s syndrome in a patient who presented to the emergency department with neck swelling and shortness of breath and was found to have infectious myositis and bacteremia with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Clinicians should be vigilant of underlying thrombus in patients with neck swelling and infectious myositis as our patient’s internal jugular vein thrombus was missed on initial computed tomography read.

Sustainable economic development is crucial to secure human welfare and eliminate social inequality. Global leaders have recently made progress towards reaching an agreement on how to convert the current unsustainable economic trends into sustainable green economic growth. The viability of the green economy depends on several variables, including governmental policy, the business climate, and environmental concerns. The presented paper examines the implementation of green economic policies and analyses government strategies and initiatives taken by the government at the national level. The study uses a descriptive-analytical approach. The study finds India is putting many regulations and initiatives into place to encourage the effective use of energy in a variety of economic areas, including green building, equipment, farming, mobility, and fuels. These green growth initiatives lower the economy's carbon intensity and provide a sizable number of green jobs.

Background: Malnutrition is a public health concern in India. According to NFHS-5, the number of children under 5 years who are stunted (less height-for-age) and underweight (less weight-for-age) in India, are 35.5% and 32.1%, respectively. Many researchers reported that malnutrition affects myelination and neural maturation of the auditory brainstem pathway. Aims and Objectives: In this study, auditory evoked potential (AEP) parameters were studied in severly acute malnutrition (SAM) children of 6 months to 80% of expected with normal height for their age), aged 6–59 months were included in the study. The parameters of AEPs were recorded using RMS-EMG EP MARK II, a 4-channel machine. Results: In our study, 30 (60%) males and 20 (40%) females had severe acute malnutrition. Introduction: Induction immunosuppression therapy plays a significant role in the prevention of acute rejection in renal transplantation. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin (rATG) used as induction immunosuppression in Indian patients undergoing renal transplantation. Patients and Methods: RISE was a multicenter (n = 20), prospective observational cohort study of patients aged ≥ 18 years undergoing a first or repeat renal transplant and receiving rATG as part of the routine management practice. Twelve-month acute rejection was evaluated as a primary endpoint. Results: A total of 325 patients were enrolled, of which 313 patients received at least one dose of rATG with a mean (standard deviation [SD]) duration of induction therapy of 2.07 (1.33) days. The mean (SD) cumulative rATG induction dose was 2.6 (1.5) mg/kg. The mean (SD) glomerular filtration rate was 64.59 (19.57) mL/min/1.73 m2 at 6 months and 64.93 (20.26) mL/min/1.73 m2 at 1 year. The incidence of acute rejection at 1 year was 7.7% (n = 23). Graft rejection at 6 months was observed in 6.7% (n = 20) patients and an average time to first graft rejection of 5.4 and 10.3 months at 6 and 12 months, respectively. In total, 342 adverse events (AEs) were reported (n = 154, 49.2%) after 12 months, of which 11 events were related to the rATG treatment. Pyrexia was the most commonly reported serious adverse event (n = 10, 3.2%). Seven deaths were reported during the study. Conclusions: The study revealed the effectiveness and safety of rATG induction therapy in the Indian context as expected based on the data from randomized clinical trials. Background: India has completed the second round of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) to monitor adult tobacco use and progress in tobacco control efforts. This study assesses the gendered pattern of tobacco use and its predictors in the second rounds of GATS. Material and Methods: Publicly available GATS-2 (2016–2017) data was analyzed which contains self-reported tobacco use information of ≥15 years Indians (n = 74,037). The independent predictors of “smoking only,” “smokeless only,” and “dual use” among current male and female tobacco users were assessed using the multinomial regression model. Results: The burden of “smoking only,” “smokeless only,” and “dual-use” of tobacco were 8.9% (8.74–9.15), 16.69% (16.42–16.96), and 3.89% (3.75–4.03), respectively, in the second round with wide regional variation as well as male dominance in use. Region, age, education, caste, and religion were significantly and consistently associated with different types of tobacco use in both genders. Other contextual predictors of tobacco use were residence, marital status, occupation, awareness, and wealth index (WI). Conclusions: Tobacco use predictors and their gendered patterns are contextual. Monitoring the predictors for tobacco use, which may change over time, should be given priority in the national tobacco control program.

This paper investigates the use of a citizen science approach for air quality monitoring to explore the likely pollution impacts of the new Missing Link #12 road passing through the informal settlement of Kibera, within Nairobi. Citizen science approaches are gaining relevance in air quality monitoring thanks to the advancement in environmental monitoring technology and the opportunities created for community-based organizations to collect data on air pollution through low-cost sensors. Fourteen households located in proximity to the Missing Link#12 were equipped with optical particle sensors. Data collected indicated that people living along the road are exposed to levels of PM2.5 and PM10 above WHO recommendations, mainly due to the particulate generated by the construction site and fuels used for indoor cooking. A community engagement workshop revealed that participatory approaches are useful for improving awareness of air pollution and associated health implications. It also allowed the community to enhance their capability to gain and use scientific tools to address local issues, and potentially lobby decision-makers to solve them. In the context of transport infrastructure development in African cities, such an approach can be a means of collecting data and monitoring the impacts of air pollution during and after road building.

Background: Nerve Conduction Velocities (NCVs) measures electrical changes and speed in the nerve. Objectives of this study were: to compare mean velocities, to find rank of importance of different velocities and to frame equation to classify severely acute malnourished (SAM) children with normal children. Material & Methods: Present case- control study was conducted on 50 SAM children and 50 normal children aged 6 months to 59 months. Independent t test and Discriminant analysis was performed. Standardized discriminant coefficient, canonical correlation and Wilks’ Lambda was calculated and p value was judges at 5% level of significance. Results: NCVs were observed significantly lower among the cases as compared with the controls. Sural Sensory Nerve Velocity holds first position followed by Sensory Nerve Velocity. So, in final discriminant model 3 variables i.e., Sural Sensory Nerve Velocity; Median Sensory Nerve Velocity; Tibial Motor Nerve Velocity were used and 42.1 % of the total variance in the discriminant scores not explained by differences among the groups by the three-variable model. Model is able to classify 82.5% cases correctly. Conclusion: Sural Sensory Nerve Velocity; Median Sensory Nerve Velocity; Tibial Motor Nerve Velocity were found as most important nerve conduction velocities with a good classification ability.

In this research article, a comparative study of different types, i.e., conventional (Multicrystalline & Monocrystalline) and Passivated Emitter Rear Cell (PERC) of commercially available crystalline silicon solar cells have been carried out in terms of their spectral response (SR), quantum efficiency (QE) and current–voltage (I-V) characteristics. The SR, Internal Quantum Efficiency (IQE), and External Quantum Efficiency (EQE) measurements have been utilized for analyzing the internal parameters such as diffusion length (L) and dead layer (dl) thickness values in all types of solar cells using Medium Wavelength Spectral Response (MWSR) and Short Wavelength Spectral Response (SWSR) methods respectively. The effect of surface passivation on the diffusion length has also been studied for mono, multi, and PERC crystalline solar cells. The results indicate that the PERC solar cells have a higher L and lower dl value and the probable reason for the high performance of this technology. The different types of solar cells are also converted into modules, and the I-V characterization is done with the Sun simulator and indicates the high performance of PERC modules. The paper also highlights one of the probable reasons for the recent PV market shift towards PERC technology.

Objectives: Present study is carried out to check the effect of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) on mitigating the heavy metal (HM) stress in wheat. Method: For this purpose, IONPs were used in an attempt to ameliorate cadmium stress in wheat plants. IONPs were synthesized by using the husk of Cocos nucifera. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by using SEM and particle size analyzer. Wheat seedlings were treated with 10–1000 mg/L IONPs. The selected concentrations of IONPs (100, 300, and 500 mg/L) were used for next experiment of pot with soil drench irrigation. Growth parameters (shoot length, root length, number of roots, biomass, spike length, weight, and number of seeds/plant), biochemical and stress parameters (chlorophyll, sugar, proline, protein, phenolics, MDA, H2O2 and antioxidant enzyme analysis, elemental analysis) were studied. Results: Results showed that the application of IONPs increased shoot length, root length, number of seeds, fresh weight, dry weight, spike length, and number of seeds of wheat plants by 37.5, 68, 81.25, 50, 100, 33, and 14.28% respectively with IONPs treatment. Biochemical attributes were also improved by using IONPs. Stress indicators showed that MDA and H2O2 were reduced by IONPs (by 31.91 and 30.76% respectively) whereas phenolics, proline, and antioxidant enzyme activity was increased (by 25, 40, and 55% respectively). IONPs treated plants had lesser or no cadmium content with the higher iron content of leaves Conclusion: It showed that IONPs have strongly positive effects on mitigating cadmium stress in wheat plants.

Background: Reports describing demographics, clinical characteristics, hospital course, morbidity, and mortality in patients in the Indian setting have been published, but they are based on limited numbers of cases. The present study among the patients with known outcomes enabled us to better understand the disease process and progression of COVID-19 cases and to correlate the factors affecting the outcome. Methods: This was a record-based, retrospective observational study of patients admitted to COVID-19 Hospital. We have retrieved medical records for all the hospitalized patients with a laboratory confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis with a known outcome (discharged or died) between April 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021. The extracted data included basic demographics, signs and symptoms, duration of hospitalization, and laboratory parameters. Categorical variables were analysed using either the chisquare test or Fisher's exact test. The level of significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: The mean age of severe and moderate patients was 38.71 years, compared to 34.95 years for mild patients. No gender difference was observed for the severe/moderate, and mild cases. The mortality rate among severe/moderate cases was 11.6%, whereas it was 3.9% in mild patients. Laboratory parameters which were significantly (p < 0.05) raised among the dead compared to discharged patients included CT score, D-dimer, CRP, ALT, AST, and alkaline phosphatase. Conclusion: Clinical and laboratory characteristics reflect the pathophysiology of disease and thus help clinicians recognise the severity of medical illness. They also facilitate the creation of management protocols for clinical care that results in improvement in patient related outcomes.

This paper provides a mini review of liquid biofertilizers, which have been proven to perform better than the other forms in lasting for longer periods of time, improving crop quality, and requiring less amounts for application. The production of liquid biofertilizers, types of liquid inoculants, and their effect on plant growth are covered in this review. Liquid biofertilizers can be made from wastes and by-products of several industries, making zero or near-zero discharge possible and thus gearing towards circular economy. Despite their usefulness in enhancing crop quality and eco-friendliness, in order to compete with chemical fertilizers, there are a number of challenges to overcome, such as extending the shelf life, making them more susceptible to seasonal climate conditions and soil types, and development of suitable machineries for production and application. More field trials, cost-benefit analysis and long-term studies should also be evaluated for commercialization purposes.

This research focuses on evaluating the impacts of technological advancements and their extended future aspects on exercising human rights in society and politics. Furthermore, the current prospects of technological advancements contribute a great portion to the advancement of society and culture. However, it also emerges and involves politics in the scenario. The research aims to explore different aspects of modern technological advancements in terms of determining the possible implementations of technology in society and politics. As a part of the research methodology, it can be highlighted that the research follows a primary research method. It collects primary quantitative data through an online survey by following a random sampling procedure. The sample population of the online survey was 50, and the ultimate sample size of this research is 39. The significance of the research lies over the identification of the technological advancements as it is the major component that impacts the future social and political community.

Introduction: Aspiration of gastric content is a known life-threatening, yet preventable complication of anaesthesia. While mostly all elective procedures do follow the preoperative fasting protocols as recommended by American Society of Anaesthesia (ASA), there are many situations where the fasting guideline cannot be followed considering the emergency. In such cases, bedside ultrasound assessment of gastric volume can become an important tool to stratify aspiration related risk. Aim: To find out the actual trends of gastric volume and pH in patients with two hour fasting with a prokinetic drug versus overnight fasting who are undergoing elective procedures. Materials and Methods: This single centre, randomised clinical trial was conducted in the Department of Anaesthesia at Dr. Sampurnanand Medical College, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India, between December 2020 and July 2021, among 50 patients of ASA grade I undergoing elective procedures under general anaesthesia. Participants were divided into two groups. Group A patients were advised overnight fasting while group B participants were advised two hour fasting for clear liquids followed by intravenous (i.v.) metoclopramide injection. Assessment of gastric volume and other gastric parameters were done using a portable ultrasound machine. The pH of gastric content was measured using pH strips. Gastric content was obtained using Ryle’s Tube placed in the patient, postinduction of anaesthesia. Collected data was statistically analysed using Unpaired t-test for all qualitative data. Results: Significant difference in the anteroposterior diameter (3.46±0.34 in group A versus 2.24±0.30 in group B), cranio-caudal diameter (4.77±0.51 in group A versus 3.71±0.36 in group B), antral curved surface area (9.90±0.77 in group A versus7.77±1.04 in group B) and gastric volume (127.48±13.09 in group A versus 104.65±15.43 in group B) and pH (2.08±0.28 in group A versus 2.80±0.41 in group B) was observed (p-value=0.0001). However, no significant difference in any gastric parameter, mentioned above, was noted before and after injecting intravenous metoclopramide. Conclusion: Bedside ultrasound assessment of gastric volume is an important toolfor aspiration risk stratification especially in emergency, non-fasting patients.

Taking holistic actions to improve urban air quality is central to reducing the health risks associated with urbanisation, yet local evidence-based and institutional frameworks to achieve this are still challenging especially in many low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). This paper develops and applies an integrated systemic approach to explore the state of air quality management in Nairobi, Kenya; as an LMIC exemplar city. The urban diagnostics approach developed assesses current particulate matter air pollution in Nairobi; quantifies anthropogenic emissions for the years 2015 and 2020 and projects scenarios of impacts of actions and inactions to 2030. This was combined with a review of grey literature on air quality policies, urban development and interviews with key stakeholders. The analysis suggests that commendable progress has been made to improve air quality in Nairobi but continuing hazardous levels of air pollution still require concerted policy efforts. Data available for numerical simulations have low spatial resolution and are generated from global emission inventories that can miss or misrepresent local emission sources. The current air quality data gap that needs to be addressed are highlighted. Strong political support is required to ensure that current air quality improvement approaches are evidence based to achieve long-term sustainability goals.

Central nervous system-related disorders are very difficult to manage with conventional therapeutics because of the selective and herculean nature of the blood-brain barrier which does not allow easy penetration of drug molecules into the brain. As a result, the efficacy of administered molecule is reduced manifold times, and difficult to ascertain the condition of the patient. An alternative route like the nose to the brain is subjectively being explored to enhance the brain's delivery. Recently various published testimonies have proved the nose to the brain can be an alternative route of administration for effective delivery to the brain. This review majorly highlights the hurdles in the delivery of the nasal route and explores the new areas available for delivery via the concept of particle size below 15 nm, which might penetrate the olfactory bulb via the paracellular spaces present in the olfactory epithelium, which starts from the brain and terminates in the nose. The success of this review might reveal new insights into drug delivery for brain targeting and the necessary delivery mechanism.

This work demonstrated the feasibility of an industrial-scale aerated static pile composting system for treating one of the common biowastes—soybean curd residue. The mixing ratios of the feedstock were optimized to achieve a carbon–nitrogen ratio and a moisture level in the ranges of 25–35 and 60–70%, respectively. This open-air composting system required 6–7 months to obtain a mature compost. Solvita and seed germination tests further confirmed the maturity of the compost, with 25% compost extract concentration yielding the best germination index in the absence of phytotoxicity. The bacterial and fungal compositions of the compost piles were further examined with metagenomic analysis. Thermoactinomyces spp., Oceanobacillus spp., and Kroppenstedtia spp. were among the unique bacteria found, and Diutina rugosa, Thermomyces dupontii, and Candida taylorii were among the unique fungi found in the compost piles, suggesting the presence of good microorganisms for degrading the organic biowastes.

Aim: The SAMe-TT2R2 score helps identify patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) likely to have poor anticoagulation control during anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and those with scores >2 might be better managed with a target-specific oral anticoagulant (NOAC). We hypothesized that in clinical practice, VKAs may be prescribed less frequently to patients with AF and SAMe-TT2R2 scores >2 than to patients with lower scores. Methods and results: We analyzed the Phase III dataset of the Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation (GLORIA-AF), a large, global, prospective global registry of patients with newly diagnosed AF and ≥1 stroke risk factor. We compared baseline clinical characteristics and antithrombotic prescriptions to determine the probability of the VKA prescription among anticoagulated patients with the baseline SAMe-TT2R2 score >2 and ≤ 2. Among 17,465 anticoagulated patients with AF, 4,828 (27.6%) patients were prescribed VKA and 12,637 (72.4%) patients an NOAC: 11,884 (68.0%) patients had SAMe-TT2R2 scores 0-2 and 5,581 (32.0%) patients had scores >2. The proportion of patients prescribed VKA was 28.0% among patients with SAMe-TT2R2 scores >2 and 27.5% in those with scores ≤2. Conclusions: The lack of a clear association between the SAMe-TT2R2 score and anticoagulant selection may be attributed to the relative efficacy and safety profiles between NOACs and VKAs as well as to the absence of trial evidence that an SAMe-TT2R2-guided strategy for the selection of the type of anticoagulation in NVAF patients has an impact on clinical outcomes of efficacy and safety. The latter hypothesis is currently being tested in a randomized controlled trial. The purpose of this paper is to analyze various dimensions for measurement of human behavior. Human behaviour is complex. Behaviors, emotions, cognitions, and attitudes can rarely be described in terms of one or two variables. It is multimodal in nature. Furthermore, the traits, modalities and dimensions cannot be measured directly, but must be inferred from constructs which in turn are measured by multiple factors or variables. I have emphasized on the use of baseline data for each subject as the degree of expressiveness for same situation which varies for each subject and needs to be measured based on the individual trait of the subject. This can be done by making baseline data for subjects being researched. Subsequently, discussion has been done on data analysis. Finally, framework for the same has been proposed. Basically, the researcher asks two questions, “Do I have anything important?” (Which is based upon the researcher’s observations of some aspect of human behavior adequately addresses the observation) “If so, what do I have?” (What is the best explanation of the relationship between the variables?)

Abstract Background A variety of public health interventions have been undertaken in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to prevent morbidity and mortality associated with household air pollution (HAP) due to cooking, heating and lighting with solid biomass fuels. Pregnant women and children under five are particularly vulnerable to the effects of HAP, due to biological susceptibility and typically higher exposure levels. However, the relative health benefits of interventions to reduce HAP exposure among these groups remain unclear. This systematic review aims to assess, among pregnant women, infants and children (under 5 years) in LMIC settings, the effectiveness of interventions which aim to reduce household air pollutant emissions due to household solid biomass fuel combustion, compared to usual cooking practices, in terms of health outcomes associated with HAP exposure. Methods This protocol follows standard systematic review processes and abides by the PRISMA-P reporting guidelines. Searches will be undertaken in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP), The Global Index Medicus (GIM), ClinicalTrials.gov and Greenfile, combining terms for pregnant women and children with interventions or policy approaches to reduce HAP from biomass fuels or HAP terms and LMIC countries. Included studies will be those reporting (i) pregnant women and children under 5 years; (ii) fuel transition, structural, educational or policy interventions; and (iii) health events associated with HAP exposure which occur among pregnant women or among children within the perinatal period, infancy and up to 5 years of age. A narrative synthesis will be undertaken for each population-intervention-outcome triad stratified by study design. Clinical and methodological homogeneity within each triad will be used to determine the feasibility for undertaking meta-analyses to give a summary estimate of the effect for each outcome. Discussion This systematic review will identify the effectiveness of existing HAP intervention measures in LMIC contexts, with discussion on the context of implementation and adoption, and summarise current literature of relevance to maternal and child health. This assessment reflects the need for HAP interventions which achieve measurable health benefits, which would need to be supported by policies that are socially and economically acceptable in LMIC settings worldwide. Thus, the objective of this secondary investigation is to explore the longitudinal association of baseline supplement intake in improving cognitive function, biochemical parameters, anthropometric variables and physical fitness among older adults.Methods: Towards Useful Aging (TUA) is a three-year longitudinal study conducted at baseline (2013– 2014) and at follow-up (2015– 2017) surveys. The number of participants dropped from 2322 during baseline study to 1787 and 1560 during the 18th and 36th month follow-up, respectively. Data on socio-demography, use of dietary supplement, biochemical indices, anthropometry, cognitive function, physical fitness and depressive symptoms were obtained. Longitudinal associations were done using the linear mixed model analysis among 1285 subjects with complete data.Results: The most common vitamin and mineral supplementations consumed were multivitamin, B-complex, and calcium. Meanwhile, the herbal supplements consumed by participants were Eurycoma longifolia, Morinda citrifolia and Orthosiphon aristatus. Longitudinal analysis adjusted for multiple covariates showed improvement in both supplement users and non-users for global cognitive function, working memory, visual memory, 2-minute step test, chair stand test, chair sit and reach and time up and go test, waist circumference and hip circumference in both the supplement users and non-users.Conclusion: Our findings indicated that dietary supplement intake is not associated with cognitive function, physical fitness, nutritional status, depressive symptoms or biochemical indices since improvement in the parameters was observed among both supplement users and non-users.Keywords: dietary supplement, cognitive function, physical fitness, depressive symptoms, nutritional status, biochemical

Gene regulatory networks are powerful tools which facilitate hypothesis generation and candidate gene discovery. However, the extent to which the network predictions are biologically relevant is often unclear. Recently a GENIE3 network which predicted targets of wheat transcription factors was produced. Here we used an independent RNA-Seq dataset to test the predictions of the wheat GENIE3 network for the senescence-regulating transcription factor NAM-A1 (TraesCS6A02G108300). We re-analyzed the RNA-Seq data against the RefSeqv1.0 genome and identified a set of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the wild-type and nam-a1 mutant which recapitulated the known role of NAM-A1 in senescence and nutrient remobilisation. We found that the GENIE3-predicted target genes of NAM-A1 overlap significantly with the DEGs, more than would be expected by chance. Based on high levels of overlap between GENIE3-predicted target genes and the DEGs, we identified candidate senescence regulators. We then explored genome-wide trends in the network related to polyploidy and found that only homeologous transcription factors are likely to share predicted targets in common. However, homeologs which vary in expression levels across tissues are less likely to share predicted targets than those that do not, suggesting that they may be more likely to act in distinct pathways. This work demonstrates that the wheat GENIE3 network can provide biologically-relevant predictions of transcription factor targets, which can be used for candidate gene prediction and for global analyses of transcription factor function. The GENIE3 network has now been integrated into the KnetMiner web application, facilitating its use in future studies.

This editorial introduces the subject matter of the thematic issue, which includes a diverse collection of contributions from authors in various disciplines including, history, architecture, planning, sociology and geography. Within the context of mediatisation processes—and the increased use of ever-expanding I&C technologies—communication has undergone profound changes. As such, this thematic issue will discuss how far (digital) media tools and their social uses in urban design and planning have impacted the visualisation of urban imaginations and how urban futures are thereby communicatively produced. Referring to an approach originating from the media and communication sciences, the authors begin with an outline of the core concepts of mediatisation and digitalisation. They suggest how the term ‘visualisation’ can be conceived and, against this background, based upon the sociological approach of communicative constructivism, a proposal is offered, which diverges from traditional methods of conceptualising visualisations: Instead, it highlights the need for a greater consideration towards the active role of creators (e.g., planners) and recipients (e.g., stakeholders) as well as the distinctive techniques of communication involved (e.g., a specific digital planning tools). The authors in this issue illustrate how communicative construction, particularly the visual construction of urban futures, can be understood, depending upon the kind of social actors as well as the means of communication involved. The editorial concludes with a summary of the main arguments and core results presented.

Digital information and communication technologies influence not only on urban planning but also citizen participation. The increasing level of politically driven involvement of the public in urban planning processes has led to the development of new participatory technologies and innovative visual tools. Using an empirical case study, the article investigates a completed participation process concerning an e-participation platform in Berlin, while focusing on the following questions: (1) How are visualisations communicatively deployed within e-participation formats? (2) In what ways do citizens communicate a kind of spatial knowledge? (3) Which imaginings of public urban space are constructed through the use of visualisations? The exploration of the communication conditions and the ‘methods’ employed will demonstrate the way participants visually communicate their perceptions and local knowledge as well as how they construct their imagining of urban places. In this context, visualisations in participation processes are understood as products of ‘communicative actions’ (Knoblauch, 2019) that allow people to present their visions in ways that are more understandable and tangible to themselves and others. Within this context, by the example of the state-driven e-platform ‘meinBerlin’ a discussion will trace how far digitalised and visualised communicative actions from Berlin residents contribute to the social construction of urban spaces and the extent to which they can be considered a part of cooperative planning.

CONTEXT: The outbreak and spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has led to a global exigency of colossal and monstrous proportions in terms of public health and economic crisis. Till date, no pharmaceutical agent is known to manage in terms of prevention and treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the disease caused by a novel virus. AIMS: The aim of the present work was to understand the underlying disease profile and dynamics that could provide relevant inputs and insight into pathophysiology and prevent further spread and evolve management strategies of COVID-19 patients from data-driven techniques. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A retrospective observational descriptive study was conducted on 29 COVID-19 patients admitted at a premier medical institution of North India in the months of February and March 2020. METHODS: The patients were diagnosed with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected. RESULTS: The mean age of population was 38.8 years with male preponderance, of which two patients were residents of Italy, and others hailed from semi-arid and Western sandy arid regions of Rajasthan (urban population). The major presenting symptom complex of said COVID-19 sample population included fever (48%), cough (31%), and shortness of breath (17%). Most of the patients (83%) had no comorbidity. No clinical correlation (r) could be appreciated between the duration of test positivity and age of afflicted COVID-19 patients (r = −0.0976). CONCLUSIONS: The present evaluation of various facets of the ongoing global pandemic of COVID-19 is an attempt to portray early clinical and epidemiological parameters of the menace of COVID-19 patients admitted at SMS Medical College and Attached Hospitals, Jaipur.

A large number of glaciers in the Hindu-Kush Himalaya are covered with debris in the lower part of the ablation zone, which is continuously expanding due to enhanced glacier mass loss. The supraglacial debris transported over the melting glacier surface acts as an insulating barrier between the ice and atmospheric conditions and has a strong influence on the spatial distribution of surface ice melt. We conducted in-situ field measurements of point-wise ablation rate, supraglacial debris thickness, and debris temperature to examine the thermal resistivity of the debris pack and its influence on ablation over three glaciers (Bara Shigri, Batal, and Kunzam) in Chandra Basin of Western Himalaya during 2016–2017. Satellite-based supraglacial debris cover assessment shows an overall debris covered area of 15% for Chandra basin. The field data revealed that the debris thickness varied between 0.5 and 326 cm, following a spatially distributed pattern in the Chandra basin. The studied glaciers have up to 90% debris cover within the ablation area, and together represent ∼33.5% of the total debris-covered area in the basin. The supraglacial debris surface temperature and near-surface air temperature shows a significant correlation (r = > 0.88, p = < 0.05), which reflects the effective control of energy balance over the debris surface. The thermal resistivity measurements revealed low resistance (0.009 ± 0.01 m2°C W−1) under thin debris pack and high resistance (0.55 ± 0.09 m2°C W−1) under thick debris. Our study revealed that the increased thickness of supraglacial debris significantly retards the glacier ablation due to its high thermal resistivity.

Malaysia is experiencing rapid urbanisation leading to an increase in the demand of energy. The use of renewable energy can satisfy energy demands and mitigate environmental issues such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. Biogas produced from anaerobic digestion from different feedstock such as food waste (FW), palm oil mill effluent (POME), garden waste (GW), landfill, sewage sludge (SS) and animal manure can be utilised to reduce the need of fossil fuel. This review paper will focus on the current biogas technologies, their scalability and socio-economic analysis on biowastes to energy in Malaysia. If all FW generated in Malaysia (approximately 15,000 tonnes per day) could be converted to energy, it has a potential to replace fossil fuel totally, as it produces 10 times more than the annual requirement of energy. Consequently, there is a significant advantage obtained from offsetting huge amounts of GHG emissions that would otherwise be contributing to the global warming effect. Several issues and challenges have been identified for the scale-up of laboratory scale to industrial scale where parameters including pH, temperature, organic loading rate (OLR), hydraulic retention time (HRT) and mixing rate must be treated carefully. The socio-economic survey conducted as part of this study has revealed the strong acceptability of this technology and the readiness of the population in Malaysia to contribute and be part of this effort. However, the survey has also identified the limitations of the sorting and preparation facilities of food waste segregation for potential biogas generation.

Psychological distress is frequent among young college students which affects their cognitive, physical and emotional well-being. Data was collected from 76 (38 male and 38 female) M.tech and Ph.D. students of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India. The purpose of thisresearch paper is to examine the levels of stress, anxiety and depression in male and female engineering students. Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 and informal interview method were explored to determine the factors responsible for stress among students and also to determine the coping mechanism of the students of a technical institution of India. t-Test is used to examine the significant difference in the levels of stress, anxiety and depression in male and female students. The finding suggests that female students are more stressed and depressed and anxious than male students.

Background: The term oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD) was recommended to refer to precancer as it conveys that not all disorders described under this term may transform into cancer. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) arises through an accumulation of genetic alterations, deoxy ribonucleic acid (DNA) changes, and epigenetic alterations. Thus, a simple yet a sensitive and specific test for early diagnosis is the need of an hour. The micronuclei (MN) assay in exfoliated epithelial cells is potentially an excellent biomarker to detect chromosome loss or malfunction of mitotic spindle. Aim of the Study: To compare the frequency of MN in exfoliated cells from oral mucosa exposed to genotoxic agents using different staining procedures and to observe the incidence of micronucleus in potentially malignant and malignant lesions. Materials and Methods: The study was undertaken to observe the cytogenetic damage in the exfoliated buccal cells of 75 cases of tobacco-related PMDs, OSCC and control subjects (25 cases from each group) and were evaluated with nonspecific May-Grünwald Giemsa stain and DNA-specific Feulgen stain. The results were statistically determined using SPSS version 17.0. Results: Correlation analyses in the present study depicted that MN frequency was significantly more in oral squamous cell carcinoma than OPMDs and normal group (P < 0.05). Giemsa-stained slides correlated significantly with karyorrhexis, karyolysis, condensed chromatin, and binucleates, whereas no such correlations were found with DNA-specific stains. Conclusion: Malignant transformation is accompanied by loss of cell capacity to evolve to death in situations of DNA damage. These findings indicate that nuclear anomalies may be misinterpreted as MN with nonspecific DNA stains and lead to false-positive results in studies with cells of epithelial origin.

In this study, we evaluated bioinspired titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) that elicited biochemical and proteome modifications in wheat plants under the biotic stress caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst). Biosynthesis of TiO2 NPs was confirmed using UV–Vis spectrophotometry, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. We found that the nanoparticles with crystalline nature were smaller than 100 nm. The results of FTIR analysis showed the presence of potential functional groups exhibiting O-H, N-H, C-C, and Ti-O stretching. The TiO2 NPs of different concentrations (20, 40, 60, and 80 mg L−1) were exogenously applied to wheat plants under the biotic stress caused by Pst, which is responsible for yellow stripe rust disease. The results of the assessment of disease incidence and percent disease index displayed time- and dose-dependent responses. The 40 mg L−1 TiO2 NPs were the most effective in decreasing disease severity. The bioinspired TiO2 NPs were also evaluated for enzymatic (superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT)), and nonenzymatic metabolites (total proline, phenolic, and flavonoid contents) in wheat plants under stripe rust stress. The 40 mg L−1 TiO2 NPs were effective in eliciting biochemical modifications to reduce biotic stress. We further evaluated the effects of TiO2 NPs through gel- and label-free liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) proteome analysis. We performed proteome analysis of infected wheat leaves and leaves treated with 40 mg L−1 TiO2 NPs under stripe rust stress. The functional classification of the proteins showed downregulation of proteins related to protein and carbohydrate metabolism, as well as of photosynthesis in plants under biotic stress. An upregulation of stress-related proteins was observed, including the defense mechanisms and primary metabolic pathways in plants treated with 40 mg L−1 TiO2 NPs under stress. The experimental results showed the potential of applying biogenic TiO2 NPs to combat fungal diseases of wheat plants and provided insight into the protein expression of plants in response to biotic stress.

Next-generation sequences (NGS) dataset of nanobody (Nb) clones in a phage display library (PDL) is of immense value as it serves in many different ways, such as: i). estimating the library size, ii). improving selection and identification of Nbs, iii). informing about frequency of V gene families, diversity and length of CDRs, iv). high resolution analysis of natural and synthetic libraries, etc. [1–3]. We used a fraction of our previously constructed PDL of Nbs derived from an E. coli lipopolysaccharide-immunized Indian desert camel in order to obtain the dataset of NGS reads of Nbs. The cryo-preserved transformants library was revived to extract the Nb-encoding VHH (inserts)-pHEN4 (vector) DNA pool. The DNA sample was used for amplifying VHH pool by PCR [6]. The VHH amplicons band was gel-purified and subjected to NGS using Illumina MiSeqTM platform. ‘Nextra XT micro V2 Index’ kit was used for the Nb library DNA sample sequencing, with the adaptors: ‘i7’ (N706: TAGGCATG) and ‘i5’ (S517: GCGTAAGA). The raw data comprised of a total read count of 182146 (matched= 179591; unmatched=2555), with average read length of 130.33 bases and a total of 23.74 Mb. Of 179591 matched reads, 142004 were paired reads and 37587 broken paired reads. The raw data of NGS reads was submitted to NCBI Sequence Reads Archive accessible at URL: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Traces/study/?acc=PRJNA516512 (dataset ref. [7]), and after analysis deposited in Mendeley Datasets repository, which is accessible at URL: [https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/4rsz3snvk5/3] (dataset ref. [8]). The sequence reads were analyzed by bioinformatics tools [9–12]. The assembled consensus contigs revealed Nb orthologs of diverse Ag-specificities, including those isolated by conventional panning and Sanger-sequenced functional Nbs. Contig 1 CDR1-3 matched to those of anti-Trypanosoma evansi RoTat1.2 variant surface glycoprotein (VSG), while Contig 2 CDR1-3 matched to those of anti-LPS Nb clones isolated from the library. Contig 3 was however incomplete and lacked CDR3. Despite lacking the depth, the NGS data is a useful guide for selection of antigen-specific Nbs from the library, as demonstrated by anti-T. evansi VSG Nbs, and provides templates for Nb-based diagnostic reagents and therapeutic agents.

Banana peels waste can be utilized to produce high quality biochar that can be incorporated into the soil for sustainable production of crops. This research analyzed several properties of the biochar produced from the banana peel at different temperatures, residence times and heating rates. This study focuses on the biochar yield and the EDX analysis of the biochar produced. Response surface methodology using central composite design (CCD) was used to optimize these parameters in the batch reactor pyrolysis system. These factors were operated in different ranges for banana peels, in which pyrolysis temperature (200 to 600°C), residence time (60 to 180 min) and heating rate (5 to 15°C·min−1) were varied using 20 experiments respectively. Quality of the biochar was determined based on the biochar yield and O/C ratio. The optimum biochar chosen from the CCD model was applied to several pots of Ipomoea aquatica in different biochar dosage levels of 0, 3, 9 and 15 g (0, 1, 3 and 5 wt% of soil) respectively. Pot experiment was conducted with completely randomized design (CRD) of one factor with five replications to correlate the average plant heights with the biochar dosage levels. Results showed that biochar dosage of 1% yields the highest average final Ipomoea aquatica plant height of 37.04 cm.

Objectives: The present study is aimed at estimating patient flow dynamic parameters and requirement for hospital beds. Second, the effects of age and gender on parameters were evaluated.Patients and Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, 987 COVID-19 patients were enrolled from SMS Medical College, Jaipur (Rajasthan, India). The survival analysis was carried out from February 29 through May 19, 2020, for two hazards: Hazard 1 was hospital discharge, and Hazard 2 was hospital death. The starting point for survival analysis of the two hazards was considered to be hospital admission. The survival curves were estimated and additional effects of age and gender were evaluated using Cox proportional hazard regression analysis.Results: The Kaplan Meier estimates of lengths of hospital stay (median = 10 days, IQR = 5–15 days) and median survival rate (more than 60 days due to a large amount of censored data) were obtained. The Cox model for Hazard 1 showed no significant effect of age and gender on duration of hospital stay. Similarly, the Cox model 2 showed no significant difference of age and gender on survival rate. The case fatality rate of 8.1%, recovery rate of 78.8%, mortality rate of 0.10 per 100 person-days, and hospital admission rate of 0.35 per 100,000 person-days were estimated.Conclusion: The study estimates hospital bed requirements based on median length of hospital stay and hospital admission rate. Furthermore, the study concludes there are no effects of age and gender on average length of hospital stay and no effects of age and gender on survival time in above-60 age groups.
