Abstract

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease widely seen in endemic regions and that can lead to systemic involvement. The musculoskeletal system is frequently affected, and the disease can exhibit clinical involvements such as arthritis, spondylitis, spondylodiscitis, osteomyelitis, tenosynovitis and bursitis. Spondylitis and spondylodiscitis, common complications of brucellosis, predominantly affect the lumbar and thoracic vertebrae.

Abstract

Arsenik çeşitli medical problemlere neden olan toksik bir elementtir. Kronik arsenik maruziyeti deri değişikliklerine, duyusal motor nöropatiye, diabetes mellitusa, periferal vasküler hastalıklara, kardiyovasküler hastalıklara, hepatotoksisiteye ve kanser riskinde artışa neden olabilir. Bununla birlikte kronik arsenik maruziyetinin yaşam kalitesi ve yorgunluk üzerine etki edip etmediği bilinmemektedir. Bu nedenle, bu çalışmada saç arsenik seviyeleri ile yaşam kalitesi ve yorgunluk skorları arasındaki ilişkiler araştırıldı. Çalışmaya 118 kronik arsenik maruziyeti olan birey ve 110 da kontrol grubu (saç arsenik düzeyleri < 1 μg/g) olmak üzere toplam 218 kişi dahil edildi. Arsenik maruziyeti saç arsenik analizi (Arian AA240Z Zeeman Atomic Absorption Spectrometer) ile değerlendirildi. Yaşam kalitesi SF 36 ile değerlendirildi. Yorgunluk düzeyleri yorgunluk şiddet skalasının türkçe versiyonu ile değerlendirildi. Saç arsenik düzeyleri ile SF 36 ve yorgunluk skorlamaları arasındaki ilişkileri araştırdık. Hem hasta grubu hem de kontrol grubundaki tüm hastalar erkek cinsiyete sahipti. Her iki grup benzer yaş ve benzer çalışma alanlarına sahipti. Saç arsenik düzeyleri hasta ve kontrol grubunda 3.6 ± 3.2 μg/g ve 0.4 ± 0.2 μg/g olarak bulundu. İki grup arasında SF 36 ve yorgunluk skorları açısından anlamlı farklılık saptanmadı (p>0.05). Saç arsenik düzeyleri ile SF 36 ve yorgunluk skorları arasında korelasyon saptanmadı. Bu çalışmada asemptomatik kronik arsenik maruziyeti olan hastalarda saç arsenik düzeylerinin yaşam kalitesi ve yorgunlukta kötüleşme ile ilgisi saptanmamıştır., Arsenic is toxic element that its exposure leads to several medical problems. Chronic arsenic exposure can lead to skin changes, peripheral sensory motor neuropathy, diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease, cardiovascular diseases, hepatotoxicity and increased risk of cancers. However, there was no knowledge whether chronic arsenic exposure can effects on quality of life and fatigue. Therefore, in this study was investigated associations between SF-36 and fatique score with hair arsenic levels. Totally 218 subjects who 118 subjects who duo to chronic arsenic exposure and 110 subjects as a control group (hair arsenic levels < 1 μg/g) were involved in this study. Arsenic exposure detected by a hair analysis (Arian AA240Z Zeeman Atomic Absorption Spectrometer). Health-related quality-of-life was evaluated with SF-36. Fatigue levels were evaluated with fatigue severity scale of Turkish version. We investigated associations that between the SF-36 score, fatigue score and hair arsenic level. All patients who both patients and control group subjects were male gender. Both groups were included match age and same workplace. Hair arsenic levels were 3.6 ± 3.2 μg/g and 0.4 ± 0.2 μg/g in arsenic exposure and control group. There were no significant difference for SF-36 and fatique scoring between two groups (p>0.05). Hair arsenic levels did not correlated with SF-36 scoring and fatique scoring (p>0.05). In this study were detected that hair arsenic levels were not related distorsion of quality of life and fatique in asymtomatic patients with chronic arsenic exposure.

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı sigara kullanımının bel ağrısı ile ilişkisi olup olmadığını belirlemekti.Çalışmamıza, beyin ve sinir cerrahi polikliniğine bel ağrısı nedeniyle başvurmuş olup ve lomber disk hernisi ön tanısı ile Lomber MRG yapılan olgularda, Lomber MRG değerleri pozitif olan, 15-70 yaş arası 200 hasta dahil edildi; olguların öyküleri ,yakınmaları ve sigara içip içmedikleri kayıt altına alındı. Sistemik hastalığı olanlar ve yaş aralığı dışındakiler değerlendirmeye alınmadı.Gruplar karşılaştırıldığında sigara kulanımının dejenerasyon üzerine etkisi olmadığı tespit edildi. Sigara kullanımının lomebr disk dejenerasyonu ile ilişkili bir risk faktörü olmadığı kanısına varıldı., The purpose of this study was to determine whether smoking was related to lumbar disc degeneration. We included 200 patients at the age of between 15 and 70 years, who presented at the neurosurgery polyclinic for lumbago and had lumbar magnetic resonance images, and who had been diagnosed with herniated lumbar disc; the patients’ histories, complaints, and whether they smoked were recorded. We excluded those with a systemic disease and did not meet the age criteria. Smoking was found to have no effects on degeneration when compared the groups. We concluded that smoking was not a risk factor associated with lumbar disc degeneration.Key words: Intervertebral disc degeneration, lumbar vertebrae, risk factors, smoking.

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of systemically used anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) medication on the thickness of corneal epithelium and stroma in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS).Methods: A total of 125 eyes of 69 participants were included in this retrospective study of three groups: healthy participants (Group 1), AS patients receiving anti-TNF-α medication (Group 2), and AS patients receiving a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication (Group 3).Results: According to anterior segment optical coherence tomography, the mean thickness of the corneal epithelium was significantly thicker in Group 2 than in Group 3 (51.6 ± 3.2 µm versus 50.4 ± 3 µm, p = 0.01), as was that of the stroma (475 ± 33 µm versus 443 ± 29 µm, p = 0.002).Conclusions: Anti-TNF-α medication and/or avoidance of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could improve the thickness of both the corneal epithelium and stroma in AS patients. Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the relationship between carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and clinical and metabolic variables in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Patients and methods: The study included 76 RA patients (18 males, 58 females; mean age 50.1±9.8 years; range 21 to 69 years) and 42 control subjects (11 males, 31 females; mean age 49.2±9.7; range 28 to 66 years). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and disease activity score were used to assess disease activation. Rheumatoid factor, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies, and metabolic syndrome components (fasting blood glucose, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure, and waist circumference) were measured. Results: Mean disease duration was 6.9±6.5 years. Patients with RA had higher CIMT than the controls (0.8±0.1 and 0.6±0.2, respectively; p<0.001). Statistically significant positive correlations were observed between CIMT and age, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The CIMT in RA patients having metabolic syndrome risk components ranging from one to four were 0.76±0.16, 0.82±0.14, 0.86±0.13, and 0.92±0.13, respectively. CIMT was positively correlated with the number of metabolic syndrome risk components. Conclusion: Our study has shown elevated CIMT in RA. Presence of metabolic syndrome components in RA patients increases tendency to atherosclerosis and constitutes a severe risk for cardiovascular disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
