Abstract

This open access book originates from an international workshop organized by Turkish Natural Catastrophe Insurance Pool (TCIP) in November 2019 that gathered renown researchers from academia, representatives of leading international reinsurance and modeling companies as well as government agencies responsible of insurance pricing in Turkey. The book includes chapters related to post-earthquake damage assessment, the state-of-art and novel earthquake loss modeling, their implementation and implication in insurance pricing at national, regional and global levels, and the role of earthquake insurance in building resilient societies and fire following earthquakes. The rich context encompassed in the book makes it a valuable tool not only for professionals and researchers dealing with earthquake loss modeling but also for practitioners in the insurance and reinsurance industry.

Abstract

We updated the earthquake strong-motion database of Türkiye (SMD-TR) that is initially compiled by Akkar et al. The updated data set consists of of 9244 earthquakes of magnitudes 3.0 ≤ M ≤ 7.8 that occurred between 1976 and 2023. It includes 95,890 three-component waveforms recorded at 1022 stations (55,375 records that are processed from 6710 events and 974 stations). The database is disseminated under research-oriented website DesignSafe (https://doi.org/10.17603/ds2-f21x-s189) and is compiled to provide ground-motion flatfile, which will be updated periodically until 2025. The released version includes events occurred in Türkiye until 28 February 2023, and hence, it comprises of the mainshocks and a great portion of aftershocks from the February 6th, 2023, Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. The database includes event metadata compiled from national and international seismological agencies as well as the literature. We classified events according to their tectonic environments (i.e. active crustal and subduction) and identified the aftershocks. The station information provided by AFAD1 was used to compute the major site parameters, including time-based average of shear-wave velocity of uppermost 30 m (VS30) and depth-to-rock horizon at which the shear-wave velocity (VS) attains 1 km/s (Z1). We also computed the finite-fault distance metrics and flagged the stations located on the hanging-wall side of the rupture, as well as identified pulse-like records. We developed an automatic processing algorithm to determine the waveform quality, apply appropriate filtercut-offs to remove low- and high-frequency noise, and compute ground-motion parameters. The automatic processing was applied to small-magnitude (M < 5.5) events, whereas manual processing scheme is preferred for waveforms recorded from larger events (M ≥ 5.5). Abstract

The lack of empirical data regarding earthquake damage or losses has propelled the development of dozens of analytical methodologies for the derivation of fragility and vulnerability functions. Each method will naturally have its strengths and weaknesses, which will consequently affect the associated risk estimates. With the purpose of sharing knowledge on vulnerability modeling, identifying shortcomings in the existing methods, and recommending improvements to the current practice, a group of vulnerability experts met in Pavia (Italy) in April 2017. Critical topics related to the selection of ground motion records, modeling of complex real structures through simplified approaches, propagation of aleatory and epistemic uncertainties, and validation of vulnerability results were discussed, and suggestions were proposed to improve the reliability and accuracy in vulnerability modeling.

Abstract

Nonlinear static procedures (NSPs) presented in the FEMA-440 document are evaluated for nondegrading three- to nine-story reinforced concrete moment-resisting frame systems. Evaluations are based on peak single-degree-of-freedom displacement, peak roof, and interstory drifts estimations. A total of 78 soil site records and 24 buildings with fundamental periods varying between 0.3 s-1.3 s are used in 2,832 linear and nonlinear response-history analyses to derive the descriptive statistics. The moment magnitude of the ground motions varies between 5.7 and 7.6. All records are within 23 km of the causative fault representing near-fault ground motions with and without pulse signals. The statistics presented suggest that lateral loading patterns used in pushover analysis to idealize the building systems play a role in the accuracy of NSPs investigated. Both procedures yield fairly good deformation demand estimations on the median. Displacement coefficient method (DCM) tends to overestimate the global deformation demands with respect to the capacity spectrum method (CSM). The conservative deformation demand estimations of DCM are correlated with the normalized lateral strength ratio, R. The CSM tends to overestimate the deformation demands for the increasing displacement ductility, [micro].
