WOS: 000394500100004 Objectives: This study aims to evaluate balance performance and fear of falling (FOF) in older people with and without diabetes mellitus (DM) and the parameters affecting balance and FOF in older patients with DM. Patients and methods: Between 2013 June - 2014 April, a total of 100 patients with DM (37 males, 63 females; mean age 66.8 +/- 4.3 years; range 60 to 83 years) and 101 non-diabetic elderly controls (35 males, 66 females; mean age 68.0 +/- 4.3 years; range 64 to 81 years) were enrolled in this study. Fear of falling (Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I)), neuropathic pain [Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms-Signs (LANSS)], mobility [Timed Up and Go test (TUG)], balance [Berg Balance Scale (BBS)], One-Legged Stance test (OLST), disability status [Modified Barthel Index (MBI)], depression [Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)] and anxiety [Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI)] were assessed. Results: Timed Up and Go test, BDI, BAI, and FES-I scores were significantly higher; BBS, OLST, and MBI scores were significantly lower in patients. There were significant effects of neuropathic pain, hypertension and cardiovascular disease on BBS and FES-I in diabetic patients. One-Legged Stance test, TUG, and FES-I were associated with BBS in diabetic patients. Falls Efficacy Scale-International was significantly correlated with HbA1c, MBI and BBS in patients. Conclusion: Older people with DM have increased FOF and balance problems. Uncontrolled DM, cardiovascular problems and neuropathic pain have negative impact on balance and FOF. Physiatrist should also take part in the follow-up of older diabetic patients.

WOS: 000340589000007 Objective: The aim of this study was to determine shoulder pain, range of motion (ROM), shoulder muscle strength (SMS), handgrip strength (HS), and the presence of lymphedema in patients who had undergone breast cancer surgery. Materials and Methods: Ninety-three females operated unilaterally for breast cancer were included in the study. Shoulder pain intensity of the operated side (rest and movement) was evaluated by a visual analogue scale. Active shoulder ROM was measured using a goniometer, SMS and HS was measured by a hand dynamometer. The presence of lymphedema was assessed by arm-forearm circumference measurements. Results: Shoulder pain during movement (76.3%) and decreased HS (59%) were the most common upper extremity problems. Other problems were shoulder pain during rest (41.9%), limited shoulder abduction (46.2%) and flexion (45.1%), decreased SMS in abduction (51.6%) and flexion (38.8%), the presence of lymphedema in the arm (23.7%) and forearm (11.9%), respectively. WOS: 000340589000005 Objective: To compare muscle strength (MS), fatigue, functional capacity, and proprioceptive acuity in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) and controls, to evaluate the impact of FM severity on these features. Materials and Methods: Sixty women with FM and 45 healthy controls were included. FM-related measurements (number of tender points, myalgic score, pain visual analogue scale (VAS), fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ)) of the patients were recorded. The patients were classified as having moderate and severe FM assessed by the FIQ. All participants underwent following assessments: knee flexor-extensor muscles strength, handgrip strength, proprioceptive acuity, 6-minute walk test (6MWT), and the multidimensional assessment of fatigue scale (MAF). Results: Knee flexor-extensor muscles strength, and 6MWT were significantly lower, MAF score was significantly higher in FM patients than in controls (p0.05). Pain VAS and MAF scores were significantly higher in patients with severe FM compared with those with moderate FM (p0.05). 6MWT was negatively associated with pain VAS score (p=0.001). MAF score was positively associated with pain VAS score (p0.05). Conclusion: The patients had increased fatigue and pain intensity, reduced knee flexor-extensor muscle strength and functional capacity compared to the healthy subjects. Pain intensity and fatigue were found to be more affected by FM severity. According to these results, improving function and MS should be taken into consideration in the management of FM, but releiving pain and improving fatigue should be prioritised.

WOS: 000321475100009 Objective: The aim of this study was to compare proprioceptive acuity and balance parameters in women with and without fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Materials and Methods: Thirty women with FMS and 30 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Functional performance by 6-minute walking test (6MWD), proprioceptive acuity by knee joint position sense using an isokinetic dynamometer, balance by the one-legged balance test and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) were assessed; and number of falls was recorded in all participants. Pain by the visual analogue scale (VAS pain) and disease activity by the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) were evaluated in all patients. Results: The mean age of the patients and controls were 41 +/- 9.20 years and 40.67 +/- 9.03 years, respectively. There were significant differences between the patients and controls in 6MWD (p0.05). VAS pain and FIQ were not correlated with balance tests and proprioceptive acuity; and proprioceptive acuity was not correlated with 6MWD and balance tests in patients (p>0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that women with FMS may have poor balance, which is not related to proprioceptive acuity, compared to women without FMS.

Materials and Methods: 1141 elderly patients who were consecutively admitted to the outpatient clinics in nine different provinces were screened for the diagnosis of OR Age, gender, complaints, diagnosis and current medications related to musculoskeletal system disorder(s) were recorded. Results: 382 elderly (341 female, 41 male) with a mean age of 71.9 +/- 5.3 years had the diagnosis of OR Low (54.5%) and upper back (39.6%) pain were the most common complaints in both sexes. These were followed by knee, hip, cervical and shoulder pain, respectively. Osteoarthritis (36%), lumbar (21%) and cervical spondylosis/stenosis (10%) were the most common musculoskeletal diseases accompanying OR The mean number of drugs used was 3.0 +/- 1.2. The most commonly prescribed anti-osteoporotic agents were bisphosphonates (59%). For the musculoskeletal pain, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (systemic and/or topical) were used in 46.6% and paracetamol in 24.6% of patients. Conclusion: It is crucial to perform a thorough physical examination to reveal the underlying cause of back pain in elderly osteoporotic patients. Besides, in order to minimize polypharmacy, it should be kept in mind that non-pharmacological approaches can be used for the management of musculoskeletal diseases. WOS: 000295573000006 Objective: The aim of this trial was to determine the early effects of teriparatide treatment on back pain, quality of life, depression, and biochemical parameters in patients with severe postmenopausal osteoporosis (OP). Materials and Methods: Twenty-one female patients with severe postmenopausal OP were included in this study. The patients received daily doses of 20 mu g of teriparatide and 800 IU vitamin D3 + 1.200 mg calcium for a period of six months. The subjects were evaluated on the basis of the visual analogue scale (VAS), Quality of life Questionnaire of the European Foundation for Osteoporosis (QUALEFFO), the Beck Depression Scale (BDS) and biochemical parameters (serum calcium, phosphorus, uric acid, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone, 25-OH vitamin D3, kidney and liver function tests) before and after treatment. Results: Eight patients discontinued teriparatide treatment because of high cost and/or difficulties in application. Thirteen patients who continued the teriparatide treatment demonstrated statistically significant improvements on the pain VAS and the QUALEFFO (subgroups of pain and total scores) after therapy compared with baseline (p0.05). Conclusion: In patients with severe postmenopausal OF teriparatide therapy is effective in reducing back pain and improving quality of life in the short term and can be considered as an important treatment choice for these patients. WOS: 000273200300002 Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of physiotherapy agents in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Materials and Methods: A total of 41 patients, diagnosed with LSS clinically and radiologically, were included in this study. The patients were divided into two groups. In Group 1 (n=22), the patients underwent a physical therapy program with hot pack, ultrasound, interference current therapy and an exercise therapy 5 days per week for three weeks. In Group 2 (n=19), the patients were accepted as control group and received only exercise therapy. The patients were evaluated with Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index, Short Form-36 and Beck Depression Inventory. Pain-free walking time (neurogenic claudication time) was measured during a treadmill test. Results: After the therapy, both groups showed statistically significant improvement in pain (except resting VAS in group 2), neurogenic claudication time, disability, depression, and in some parameters of quality of life. The improvement in VAS scores and some parameters of quality of life (physical functioning, physical roles, pain, general health) in group 1 were better than the control group. Conclusion: In patients with LSS, physical agents are effective after a short-term therapy and they can be considered as an important treatment choice for these patients. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two patients with hemodialysis and 54 controls were enrolled in the study. The social and demographic characterictics of the patients were evaluated by semi structured form. All of the patients and control cases underwent Visual Analog Scala (VAS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and SF-36. Results: There was no statistical difference between the patients and control cases according to demographical data (p>0.05). The SF-36 scores of the study patients were significantly lower than controls except in the Physical Role (PR) score (p 0.05).
