Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are a diverse group of functional RNA molecules that lack the ability to code for proteins. Despite missing this traditional role, ncRNAs have emerged as crucial regulators of various biological processes and have been implicated in the development and progression of many diseases, including cancer. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are two prominent classes of ncRNAs that have emerged as key players in cancer pathophysiology. In particular, miR-21 has been reported to exhibit oncogenic roles in various forms of human cancer, including prostate, breast, lung, and colorectal cancer. In this context, miR-21 overexpression is closely associated with tumor proliferation, growth, invasion, angiogenesis, and chemoresistance, whereas miR-21 inactivation is linked to the regression of most tumor-related processes. Accordingly, miR-21 is a crucial modulator of various canonical oncogenic pathways such as PTEN/PI3K/Akt, Wnt/β-catenin, STAT, p53, MMP2, and MMP9. Moreover, interplays between lncRNA and miRNA further complicate the regulatory mechanisms underlying tumor development and progression. In this regard, several lncRNAs have been found to interact with miR-21 and, by functioning as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) or miRNA sponges, can modulate cancer tumorigenesis. This work presents and discusses recent findings highlighting the roles and pathophysiological implications of the miR-21-lncRNA regulatory axis in cancer occurrence, development, and progression. The data collected indicate that specific lncRNAs, such as MEG3, CASC2, and GAS5, are strongly associated with miR-21 in various types of cancer, including gastric, cervical, lung, and glioma. Indeed, these lncRNAs are well-known tumor suppressors and are commonly downregulated in different types of tumors. Conversely, by modulating various mechanisms and oncogenic signaling pathways, their overexpression has been linked with preventing tumor formation and development. This review highlights the significance of these regulatory pathways in cancer and their potential for use in cancer therapy as diagnostic and prognostic markers.

Despite the disruptive effects of COVID-19 on higher education institutions, the pandemic has enforced the intensive and sustained integration of new digital technologies and platforms into Education, a case that has instigated new contexts for online learning research. A considerable proportion of empirical literature advocates that perceived fear associated with the pandemic is positively related to protection motivation and, hence, online learning acceptance. The current study aims to extend one of the prominent technology acceptance theories, namely, the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), and diffusion of innovation of theory (DIT) to investigate the acceptance and adoption of learning management systems (LMS) among students and faculty. A cross-sectional survey study has been conducted in a higher education institution in Oman, involving a sample of undergraduate students and faculty. The findings have indicated that perceived corona fear has significantly influenced perceived effort expectancy and performance expectancy, whereas facilitating conditions and technological innovativeness, contrary to the forecasts, have not significantly affected intention. Based on its findings, the current study suggests several practical implications for promoting the pedagogical efficacy of online learning elements within comprehensive blended learning models in higher education institutions in the post-pandemic era.

Purpose: This study examines the critical elements that contribute to the effective adoption of educational digital resources (EDRs) in schools, with a focus on school principals and their leadership, from a strategic pedagogical standpoint. Design/methodology/approach: Using survey data from 200 school principals, measurement and structure models are tested through structural equation modeling to quantify the impact between constructs. Findings: The findings indicate that the most important factor influencing how effectively schools are transforming digitally is how beneficial school principals believe EDRs to be. Other important elements include the environment of the school, the technical assistance and service provided for the EDRs, and the professional and personal background of the principal. Practical implications: Principals should be a fundamental component of educational plans for digital transformation, considering things like their age, leadership and teaching experience. Other components include contextual elements like school size, complexity and digital culture. A school principal's ability to promote an open dialogue -- that enables educational communities to view the integration of EDRs into pedagogical models as an opportunity to improve outcomes -- can assist a digital culture transition, rather than via the principal's authority or bureaucratic influence. Originality/value: This research is among the pioneer to study the role of school principals in the UAE towards understanding the direction for digital transformation.

Patients with longstanding diabetes develop diabetic PNP (DPNP), which is resilient to currently available drugs. The underlying molecular mechanisms of DPNP are still illusive, but Kv 7 channels that have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various types of chronic pain are likely to be involved. Indeed, using the streptozotocin (STZ) rat model of DPNP, we have previously shown that Kv 7 activation with their non-selective activator retigabine attenuated neuropathic pain behavior suggesting that these channels are implicated in DPNP pathogenesis. Here, we evaluated, in the same STZ model, whether the more potent and more selective Kv 7 channel openers flupirtine and ML213 attenuate STZ-induced pain hypersensitivity.Methods: Male Sprague Dawley rats (250– 300 g) were used. The STZ model involved a single injection of STZ (60 mg/kg, i.p.). Behavioral testing for mechanical and heat pain sensitivity was performed using a dynamic plantar aesthesiometer and Hargreaves analgesiometer, respectively.Results: STZ rats exhibited behavioral signs of mechanical and heat hypersensitivity as indicated by significant decreases in the mean paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) and mean paw withdrawal latency (PWL), respectively, at 35 days post-STZ treatment. Single injections of flupirtine (10 mg/kg, i.p.) and ML213 (5 mg/kg, i.p.) to STZ rats (35-days after STZ treatment) caused significant increases in the mean PWT, but not PWL, indicating attenuation of mechanical, but not heat hypersensitivity. Both flupirtine and ML213 were as effective as the positive control gabapentin (10/kg, i.p.), and their anti-allodynic effects were prevented by the Kv 7 channel-specific blocker XE991 (3 mg/kg, i.p.).Conclusion: The findings suggest that Kv 7 channels are involved in the mechanisms of mechanical but not heat hypersensitivity associated with DPNP, and that their activation may prove to be effective in alleviating DPNP symptoms.Keywords: ion channels, diabetic neuropathy, chronic pain, rat model of pain, Kv 7 channels

Objectives During the COVID-19 epidemic, due to the high risk associated with travel and group gatherings, the Ministry of Public Health in Qatar introduced home delivery of pharmaceutical services. This study aims to investigate the satisfaction and preferences of patients who used the new home delivery services provided by health centres (HCs).Study design A cross-sectional study was conducted using an exploratory questionnaire to assess patients’ preferences for pharmaceutical delivery services.Settings Primary care.Participants A convenient sample of 604 adults who used the pharmaceutical delivery services was recruited. The study tool measured satisfaction with a set of 11 service evaluation criteria on a Likert scale of 5 grades. The score ranged between 1 for highly dissatisfied and 5 for highly satisfied. A quantitative summary satisfaction score was calculated by summing the satisfaction rating for home delivery on the 11 service evaluation criteria. The final score was adjusted to a maximum of 100 for ease of understanding.Results Results showed that 45.5% of participants were highly satisfied with the overall quality of the home delivery service. Furthermore, 58.9% were willing to recommend the service to others, while only 30.9% considered the delivery cost to be reasonable. Among the factors associated with satisfaction was nationality, where Qatari nationals had a significantly higher mean satisfaction score (89%) compared with expatriates (79.5%).Outcome The satisfaction score exhibited a significant positive trend with age and educational level. Factors such as gender, the time required to access the HCs, frequency of requesting pharmacy service and income categories did not show a significant difference in the satisfaction score.Conclusion The home delivery service is a promising addition to primary care. It may play a crucial role in enhancing accessibility for the beneficiaries reducing unnecessary visits to HCs in the future.

Objective This study aimed to determine the prevalence of the negative D antigen phenotype, adherence to routine antenatal anti-D immunoglobulin prophylaxis (RAADP) administration and D antigen sensitisation among pregnant women in the UAE.Design Data was collected from pregnant women enrolled in the Mutaba’ah Study. The Mutaba’ah Study is an ongoing prospective mother and child cohort study in the UAE. Data were extracted from the medical records and baseline questionnaire administered to the participants between May 2017 and January 2021.Setting The study was conducted in Al Ain city of the UAE.Participants A total of 5080 pregnant women residing in Al Ain participated in the study.Outcome measures The study estimated the prevalence of negative D antigen phenotype and the provision of RAADP in this population.Results Of the 5080 pregnant women analysed, 4651 (91.6%) had D antigen positive status, while 429 (8.4%) were D-negative. D antigen sensitisation was low at 0.5%, and there was a high uptake of RAADP in the population at 88.8%.Conclusions The adherence to RAADP is consistent with published data from other healthcare settings. Knowledge of the prevalence of D antigen negative mothers is crucial to the financial and resource consideration for implementing antenatal foetal cell-free DNA screening to determine foetal D antigen status.

BackgroundFrailty is a critical concern for older adults, impacting their susceptibility to adverse events and overall quality of life. This study aimed to determine the frailty status of patients 60 years or older in Abu Dhabi Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) and assess its relation to the stress exerted by Ramadan fasting and the occurrence of any adverse outcomes.MethodsIn this prospective observational study, participants were included if the attending physicians used the IDF-DAR risk stratification assessment tool. A tele-interview was conducted to complete the FRAIL score within 6 weeks before Ramadan 1,444 (CE 2022). The outcome was assessed through another tele-interview and an electronic medical record review after Ramadan.ResultsAccording to the FRAIL assessment tool, among the 204 patients aged 60 years or older included in the study, 109 (53.4%) were classified as either frail or pre-frail. In total, 20 (9.8%) patients were frail, that is, 1 out of 10, and 89 (43.6%) were pre-frail. The remaining 95 (46.6%) patients were robust. Using logistic regression to assess the occurrence of adverse outcomes after Ramadan fasting, a higher frailty score was identified as the third independent risk factor [B = 0.4, OR = 1.5 (1–2.02–1.86), and p = 0.039] for experiencing an adverse event. The identified factors associated with frailty were age, increased albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR), chronic kidney diseases (CKDs), and ischemic heart diseases (beta = 0.27, p = 0.003; beta = 0.24, p = 0.004; beta = 0.2, p = 0.039; and beta = 0.18, p = 0.041, respectively). One-third of the frail patients had an event, while the incidence in pre-frail patients was 11.2%, and among the robust patients, the incidence was 6.3%. Physicians’ global assessment of frailty did not align well with the structured FRAIL scoring. Only five (25%) out of the 20 patients identified as frail by the FRAIL assessment tool were also judged as frail or having cognitive function impairment by the physicians’ global assessment tool.ConclusionFrailty is prevalent among elderly patients with diabetes. Disparity exists between subjective and objective frailty assessments, emphasizing the need for standardized evaluation methods. Using the FRAIL tool is recommended for patients aged 60 or older with diabetes in Abu Dhabi.

X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH), the most prevalent form of inherited hypophosphatemic rickets, is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the gene encoding phosphate-regulating endopeptidase homolog, X-linked (PHEX). This case series presents 14 cases of XLH from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The patients’ medical history, biochemical and radiological investigative findings, as well as treatment responses and side effects from both conventional and burosumab therapy, are described. Cases were aged 2–40 years at diagnosis. There were two male cases and 12 female cases. All cases were treated with conventional therapy which resulted in a lack of improvement in or worsening of the clinical signs and symptoms of rickets or biochemical parameters. Side effects of conventional therapy included nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nephrocalcinosis, and hyperparathyroidism, which affected the patients’ quality of life and adherence to treatment. In the 10 patients treated with burosumab, there was a marked improvement in the biochemical markers of rickets, with a mean increase in serum phosphate of +0.56 mmol/L and tubular maximum phosphate reabsorption (TmP) to glomerular filtration rate (GFR) ratio (TmP/GFR) of +0.39 mmol/L at 12 months compared to baseline. Furthermore, a mean decrease in serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) of −80.80 IU/L and parathyroid hormone (PTH) of −63.61 pmol/L at 12 months compared to baseline was observed in these patients. Additionally, patients treated with burosumab reported reduced pain, muscle weakness, and fatigue as well as the ability to lead more physically active lives with no significant side effects of treatment.

Given the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic, adverse psychological outcomes are expected to occur among healthcare personnel (HCPs). However, little is known about these outcomes within Ras al Khaimah, UAE. This study aims to assess the psychological impact of COVID-19 on healthcare personnel from different hospitals and clinics in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), UAE. An online questionnaire was distributed to healthcare personnel within Ras al Khaimah, UAE, through an institutional email that enabled them to enroll in the study after giving informed consent. Likert scale was used to calculate the relation between demographic factors and 13 variables of psychological distress. An unpaired t-test was applied. This study shows that 31.7% of HCPs in RAK report moderate to high levels of anxiety due to concerns of potential workplace exposure, 41.6% are afraid of infecting their families and 13.1% find themselves feeling isolated from their families. Those who were younger than 45 years old, unmarried people and having more than two children were more likely to experience psychological distress than their counterparts. While the adverse psychological impact within this population is not as severe as what was noted in different populations in other countries, they must be addressed. It is important to ensure that HCPs have the appropriate physical and mental resources to persevere through similar stressful periods in the future.

Using gradient-corrected density functional theory we investigate the mechanical properties of ultrathin boron (B) and phosphorus (P) doped silicon nanowires (SiNWs) along the [001] and [111] orientations within the PBE approximation. Both pristine and doped SiNWs under study have diameters ranging from 5 to 8 Å. Our results show that doping significantly enhances the bulk modulus (B0), shear modulus (GV), Young’s modulus (Y), and other mechanical parameters. The significant anisotropy observed in the mechanical properties of Si[111] NWs, with varying moduli along different axes, further illustrates the complex interplay between mechanical behavior and electronic structure at the nanoscale. The mechanical flexibility of SiNWs, combined with their tunable electronic properties due to quantum confinement, makes them promising candidates for advanced nanoelectronic devices, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), and advanced technologies.

The emergence of wearable technologies, including smartwatches, has received a considerable attention from scholars across several sectors. However, there is a scarcity of knowledge regarding the determinants affecting the adoption of these wearables in education. Therefore, this research aims to propose a theoretical research model through the integration of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and protection motivation theory (PMT) to understand the students' behavioral intention to use smartwatches in learning activities. Through the use of machine learning classification algorithms, the proposed model has been validated using data collected via an online survey from 511 university students. The results indicated that perceived severity, perceived vulnerability, self-efficacy, response efficacy, subjective norm, attitude, and perceived behavioral control have a significant positive impact on students' behavioral intention to use smartwatches for educational purposes. Besides, response cost was found to have a significant negative effect on students' behavioral intention. The evidence from these findings provides the policy-makers in higher educational institutions with a clear vision of the most effective policies and best practices to enhance the capacity and potential use of these wearables in educational activities. The theoretical contributions and practical implications were also discussed.

The long-term bond degradation and strength retention of flexural bond prisms strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite and galvanized steel mesh (GSM) systems, bonded to concrete using epoxy adhesives and cement-based mortar under aggressive conditioning regimes are compared in this paper. Notched prisms strengthened using low-cord density steel mesh (LSM) with epoxy (SME-strengthened) and cement mortar (SMM-strengthened), and CFRP-epoxy systems were weathered under saline water and direct sunlight for a period of 28 and 540 days. The results of the study were analyzed based on experimentally obtained ultimate load (Pu) values and empirically calculated average bond shear stress (τavg) and prism strength retention (Rp) values. The bond strength degraded by 39 and 34 % in CFRP strengthened, 2.9 and 33 % in SME strengthened, and 2.8 and 10.8 % in SMM-strengthened specimens following the 540-day exposure to saline water and direct sunlight, respectively. The average prism retention ratio was calculated to be 0.61 and 0.66 for CFRP-strengthened, 0.97 and 0.67 for SME-strengthened, and 0.97 and 0.89 for SMM-strengthened specimens after 540 days of saline water and direct sunlight exposure. Flexural prism environment strength reduction factors (CE) were proposed as 0.60, 0.95, and 0.95 for CFRP, SME, and SMM-strengthened specimens under saline water exposures and 0.65, 0.65, and 0.85 for CFRP, SME, and SMM strengthened specimens under direct sunlight exposures. Saline water exposure was observed to be most critical to all strengthening systems. Although CFRP-strengthened specimens showed minimum degradation in load-carrying capacity under both conditioning regimes, they showed maximum bond strength reduction in contrast to SMM-strengthened specimens. It was observed that the choice of bonding agent significantly influenced the extent of bond strength degradation under extreme exposure regimes, like those that prevail in the UAE and the Persian Gulf.

ABSTRACT We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the total microbiome and transcriptionally active microbiome communities in the roots and root nodules of Prosopis cineraria, an important leguminous tree in arid regions of many Asian countries. Mature P. cineraria trees growing in the desert did not exhibit any detected root nodules. However, we observed root nodules on the roots of P. cineraria growing on a desert farm and on young plants growing in a growth chamber, when inoculated with rhizosphere soil, including with rhizosphere soil from near desert tree roots that had no nodules. Compared to nearby soil, non-nodulated roots were enriched with Actinobacteria (e.g., Actinophytocola sp.), whereas root nodules sampled from the desert farm and growth chamber had abundant Alphaproteobacteria (e.g., Ensifer sp.). These nodules yielded many microbes in addition to such nitrogen-fixing bacteria as Ensifer and Sinorhizobium species. Significant differences exist in the composition and abundance of microbial isolates between the nodule surface and the nodule endosphere. Shotgun metagenome analysis of nodule endospheres revealed that the root nodules comprised over 90% bacterial DNA, whereas metatranscriptome analysis showed that the plant produces vastly more transcripts than the microbes in these nodules. Control inoculations demonstrated that four out of six Rhizobium, Agrobacterium, or Ensifer isolates purified from P. cineraria nodules produced nodules in the roots of P. cineraria seedlings under greenhouse conditions. The best nodulation was achieved when seedlings were inoculated with a mixture of those bacterial strains. Though root nodulation could be achieved under water stress conditions, nodule number and nodule biomass increased with copious water availability. .IMPORTANCEMicrobial communities were investigated in roots and root nodules of Prosopis cineraria, a leguminous tree species in arid Asian regions that is responsible for exceptionally important contributions to soil fertility in these dramatically dry locations. Soil removed from regions near nodule-free roots on these mature plants contained an abundance of bacteria with the genetic ability to generate nodules and fix nitrogen but did not normally nodulate in their native rhizosphere environment, suggesting a very different co-evolved relationship than that observed for herbaceous legumes. The relative over-expression of the low-gene-density plant DNA compared to the bacterial DNA in the nodules was also unexpected, indicating a very powerful induction of host genetic contributions within the nodule. Finally, the water dependence of nodulation in inoculated seedlings suggested a possible link between early seedling growth (before a deep root system can be developed) and the early development of nitrogen-fixing capability.

Nanogap nanowires have gained attention for their potential applications in biosensing due to their unique physical properties, such as high surface-to-volume ratios and enhanced sensitivity. These nanowires can be used as electrodes in electrochemical biosensors, improving the sensitivity and selectivity of these devices. They can also be integrated into sensor platforms using mature nano-fabrication procedures. These advancements offer great potential for developing highly sensitive and accurate biosensors for various applications, including biomedical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety. Nanogap nanowires have revolutionized the field by providing enhanced sensitivity and accuracy in detecting biological molecules. They have also been used in the fabrication of segmented nanowires for chemical sensing, allowing for more precise and targeted detection of specific analytes. Nanogap nanowires have shown promise in protein biomarker analysis, enabling ultra-sensitive detection of protein biomarkers at low levels. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in Nanogap Nanowires and their applications in biosensing.

Background: Ruptured intracranial aneurysms may face configurational changes in size and shape resulting from extreme weakness in their wall. These configurational changes are associated with an amplified risk of rupture and surgical challenges as these aneurysms have proven to be unstable. However, to our knowledge, no previous studies have addressed the issue of configurational aneurysmal changes between the patient’s presentation (radiological images) and intraoperative findings. This paper aims to compare aneurysmal size and shape between pre-operative Computed tomography angiography and intraoperative lesion characteristics in a cohort of patients presented to our centre. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on cases admitted to the Neurosurgery Teaching Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, and underwent microsurgical clipping of ruptured aneurysms. Their records were checked for aneurysmal configurational changes by comparing pre-operative radiological images and intra-operative findings. Results: Of the 275 patients, 5 cases were enrolled with aneurysmal configurational changes. Three of them were females, and two were males. The pre-operative aneurysmal shapes based on Computed tomography angiography were (3 unicyst and two conical shapes) and the range of aneurysmal size was (7-11 mm) with a mean of 9 mm. Compared to intra-operative findings, there were total aneurysmal shape changes (connected cyst in 4 patients and spherical aneurysm in one patient). The range of aneurysmal size was (7-11 mm) with a mean of 9 mm. Conclusion: Intracranial aneurysms may undergo configurational changes through the time between pre-op imaging and surgery; early detection of these changes may ensure optimal management of such cases.
