This research aims to reveal the ideology of Al-Jazeera media and the social conditions that influence it through reporting on Muhammad bin Salman and the Saudi Vision 2030 on the Al-Jazeera Arabic news site. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this research were analyzed using the Fairclough discourse analysis model. At the level of text analysis, the results of the study show that Al-Jazeera uses sharp and firm diction, namely by using phrases meaning “taukid” (strengthening), “laa” and “lam nafiyah” particles, sentences meaning “tasybih” (similarity) which have bad connotations, bad idioms, metaphorical expressions to show evil, causality to explain a situation, and the use of negative diction. At the level of discursive practice, Al-Jazeera creates news according to its target audience in the Middle East and Africa. At the sociocultural level, Al-Jazeera has an ideology, namely, representing the unrest of Middle Eastern society with the slogan, “The opinion and the other opinion.” Besides that, socio-political conditions in the Middle East and diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Qatar influence Al-Jazeera in producing discourse about Saudi Arabia, especially Saudi Vision 2030.

The coverage of female athletes in sports media has been claimed to exhibit prejudice in favor of male athletes. Therefore, they promote the dominance of traditional masculine hegemony. Accordingly, the present study examines Al-Jazeera's coverage of Arab female athletes participating in the Rio Olympics. The study, therefore, aims to identify Al-Jazeera's strategies for covering Arab female athletes in selected online stories and their ideological perspectives in terms of "Self" or public and "Other" or private dichotomy. Furthermore, it aims to examine the feminist critical discourse analysis perspective in the gendered social practices of the Eastern world. This study analyses two Al-Jazeera news stories using feminist critical discourse analysis. Feminist critical discourse analysis challenges social practices related to gender stereotypes. Occasionally, gender inequalities are manifested explicitly as well as implicitly. Patriarchy persists in many social institutions and among women (and men) globally. The researchers implement Lazar's (2018) Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis. Thus, sports news ideological methods are analyzed using positive "in-group" and negative "out-group" dichotomy. The current research findings indicate that the patriarchal society has been transformed with respect to women's empowerment. Arab female athletes take place in public life as their male counterparts. However, the analyzed data demonstrated Arab women's gender resistance to the stereotypical gender norms. However, the current research is essential for revealing the progress of gender-based hierarchal social norms. Deconstructing conventional unequal gender roles is a key component of this research project's contribution to developing and promoting gender equality in Arabic culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In this study, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) was utilised to examine the Al Jazeera Arabic news website with respect to its reports on the social actors in the Yemen war, particularly the KSA, UAE, Egypt and Bahrain coalition and the opposing Houthis, both before and after the Gulf crisis that occurred on 5 June 2017. The analysed data included a total of 32 news articles related to the war in Yemen, with 16 articles covering the period prior to the Crisis, from 2015 to 2017, and 16 covering the period following the onset of the crisis, from 2017 to 2019. The overall aim was to uncover the ideological implications of various linguistic elements, such as lexical choices, news headline creation, and de-legitimisation strategies, and the results revealed identifiable, distinct, and non-random changes in tone and angle of representation relating to the various social actors and their actions. Before the crisis, the coalition was represented positively while Houthis was presented negatively, while after the crisis, the tone towards these social actors was completely reversed. The various discursive strategies used in the articles across both periods thus show that the coverage of the Yemen crisis was intended to ideologically and politically guide readers' understanding of the crisis. Globalization scholars argue that the launch of Al-Jazeera has promoted a fairer horizontal news flow as a non-Western perspective entered the global public sphere leading to the Al-Jazeera Effect. In contrast, other scholars argue that Al-Jazeera outlets face biases and boycotts due to their Qatari origin, thus casting a shadow over the Al Jazeera Effect argument. This study employs an innovative approach to contribute to this debate by examining Al-Jazeera English (AJE) and AJ + 's Twitter following amongst four epistemic communities: ambassadors, foreign ministries, UN missions and journalists. The analysis found that AJE was consistently amongst the top five most followed new channels on Twitter, obtaining greater popularity than major Western news outlets such as Fox News and Sky News. This lends a unique empirical support for the Al-Jazeera Effect hypothesis. AJ + was found to be less popular, possibly due to its distinct nature as an online news platform. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CRITICAL discourse analysis , *SYRIAN Civil War, 2011- , *SOCIAL dynamics , *SOCIAL processes , *SOCIAL structure , *POWER (Social sciences) - Abstract
This paper analyzes all the articles and corresponding comments of Al-Jazeera Arabic's coverage of the Syrian war from 2011 to 2017. I propose a multilayered Critical Discourse Analysis Guided Topic Modeling method that includes context of social structures and processes in the analysis of topics. This article shows that the employment of topic modeling without Critical Discourse Analysis does not unravel the power relations embedded within the platform. Two different applications of this method are used to demonstrate how a guided topic modeling method can lead to more nuanced results that can unravel important social dynamics which would have remained unperceived if applying traditional computational methods. This study explores how the fluctuations of Qatari-Bahraini ties from 2011 to 2021 have influenced Al-Jazeera's legitimization of the Bahraini regime. It also measures the extent to which Al-Jazeera Arabic (AJA) and Al-Jazeera English (AJE) included Galtung's typology of violence (ToV) and peace journalism model (PJM) in their coverage of Bahrain's 2011 uprising. A total of 424 articles were analyzed from both channels. The results found that the regime's direct violence dominated the coverage, whereas its structural and cultural violence received less attention, particularly by AJA. In addition, the number of articles framing the regime's propaganda as facts dropped across both channels following the 2017 Gulf crisis. During the same period, delegitimizing frames of the regime increased in articles from AJA and AJE. The study concludes that the deterioration of Qatari-Bahraini relations after the 2017 crisis made Al-Jazeera's coverage more critical of the Bahraini regime but not necessarily more peace journalism oriented. TELEVISION broadcasting of news , *TELEVISION interviews & interviewing , *CONTENT analysis , *INFORMATION resources , *TELEVISION talk programs - Abstract
News interviews in news bulletins are among the most common forms of news presentation that have not been adequately studied and researched yet. In this study, we have tried to research the special features of news interviews, their types, their different forms of presentation, the geographical areas they cover, and the categories of their guests. The study has taken the nine o'clock news bulletin on Al Jazeera as a representative model for studying news interviews on Arabic TV newscasts. The study has covered the period between March 01, 2020 and March 31, 2020, involving (244) news interviews. This exploratory study has relied on a content analysis form to collect quantitative and quantitative- qualitative data, analyze it, and then present it with illustrative tables and graphs. The study has came out with a set of results, such as the following. The number of individual interviews with guests exceeds the number of bilateral and group interviews by 76%. News interviews with the station's correspondents constitute the largest proportion compared to those with Arab and foreign interviewees. Male guests constitute the largest proportion in interviews. The vast majority of correspondents' interviews are conducted from the capitals of the countries in which they are present. The study has recommended that politicians should be hosted more in news interviews as they are a primary source of information and points of view, that interviews with correspondents should be reduced except in emergency cases; live coverage; and important events, that the percentage of women in interviews should be increased, in addition to other recommendations. During the summer of 2007, the Occupied Palestinian Territories witnessed a serious domestic conflict as a result of the power struggle between the two leading political parties: Fatah and Hamas. The conflict left hundreds of Palestinians dead and ultimately led to the political division between the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and further, to a deep political rift between the Palestinians themselves that still remains at the time of writing. This thesis examines how this conflict was represented in the news reports of the two largest Arab satellite channels, which have different political affiliations: the Aljazeera channel funded by Qatar, and the Al-Arabiya channel funded by Saudi Arabia. The study sheds important new light on the political economy of media ownership in the Arab region and its potential impact on coverage of a key moment in the region's ongoing struggles in Palestine. The study therefore raises evidence and disturbing questions about the delimiting effect that dominant, privately owned satellite news networks have on the maintenance of the public sphere. The key findings of this study lie in the outline of the boundaries of the Arab satellite media's independence and objectivity, and in illustrating its persistent submission to political interests. While this is reflected in the two channels' coverage of 'Palestine', it indicated that these channels' adherence to high journalistic standards is compromised when the crucial ideological interests of their sponsors are involved. The notion that these two channels are working with objective standards of reporting is, however, weakened when it comes to its coverage of events that involve Qatari and Saudi interests. Accordingly, Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya presented different versions of the same events of the Hamas and Fatah conflict that are indicative of their clashing political stances. The findings show that the reporting of the conflict did not meet the professional journalistic and ethical requirements of neutrality and value judgements.

This thesis analyzes the processes of framing that took place within a matrix comprising influential intellectuals, a potent Arab media outlet whose audience amounts to tens of millions of Arab spectators, and the vibrant social movements calling for political change in Egypt and Libya in 2011. It explores the various forms of meaning construction carried out by al-Jazeera and the intellectuals it regularly hosted to comment on the uprisings in both countries as they occurred. By addressing two case studies defined by different contextualizing variables, the thesis illustrates how al-Jazeera’s commentators were part and parcel of the network’s output and its daily engagement with its audiences. The thesis examines the means through which these intellectuals capitalized on the channel’s powerful broadcast imagery to articulate their interpretations of the unfolding uprisings and propose alternative political possibilities. It argues that the network’s intricate processes of meaning construction rendered it an institutional organic intellectual with an ability to communicate persuasive messages and accordingly incite mass mobilization. It also contends that al-Jazeera’s attempts to void long-sustained regime legitimacies, by countering their narratives and critically engaging with their political rationale, have contributed to redesigning political realities in the cases under study.

The Qatari-funded channel, Al-Jazeera Arabic (AJA) has been subject to criticism as being in favour of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) in Egypt. The approach taken by AJA Satellite Television to represent the MB, the Mubarak regime and other political actors in Egypt, during its coverage of four key electoral moments - before and after the 2011‘revolution’- is reviewed in this research. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is applied to study the constructive effects of AJA’s language in an interpretive way (Parker & Burman, 1993). The effect of the language used by two predominant AJA TV programmes, Without Borders بلا حدود and Opposite Direction الاتجاه المعاكس has been investigated and a number of current and former AJA journalists have been interviewed. Van Dijk’s Ideological Square and Pier Robinson’s Framing Model, in conjunction with Chouliaraki’s Three Rhetorical Strategies (Verbal Mode, Agency and Time Space) have been used as analysis tools to study the process of AJA’s representation of different political ideologies: the MB’s Islamic ideology and the Mubarak regime’s secular ideology. Van Dijk’s Ideological Square helps to identify the boundaries between ‘us’ (the good) and ‘them’ (the bad), and to classify people according to their support of specific ideology against another - the ‘in-group’ or the ‘outgroup’. AJA positively framed the Islamic MB movement on the basis that the group and its members were democratic, Islamic and victims, whereas it negatively framed the Mubarak regime and the Military Council in Egypt as repressive, secular and villains. The assigned role of different actors (including; the Egyptian people and opposition parties) in AJA TV programmes changed from one electoral moment to another. While the Mubarak regime, its supporters and the Military Council were represented as the ‘out-group’ at all times, the role allocated to the Egyptian people and the opposition shifted between the ‘in-group’ and the ‘out-group’, depending on the political mood they held towards the MB.

This study looked at the contribution of the Al Jazeera channel, whether through its news site or its official Twitter account, to spread false news and the extent of the impact of that news on the audience’s interaction. The study used the gatekeeper theory and theory of the spread of innovations to implement this study. The study also aimed to identify the extent of Al-Jazeera's reliance on Twitter to promote fake news and explore the type of news and type of content in the posted news and tweets. The researchers collected a set of news and tweets that Al-Jazeera relied on, either through its news site or on its official account on the Twitter platform, and then analyzed them to measure the extent of false news between that news and the accounts used, as well as the extent of the existence of documented or undocumented identifiers on Twitter by hashtags, the most commonly traded in Saudi Arabia. After analyzing the tweets, which numbered more than 70 news and tweets that came with the headline ”Saudi Twitters”. The study concluded that political news was the most widespread news on the Al-Jazeera News website, at a rate of 45 percent of all news. The study also found that 82 percent of the content submitted on the island relied on textual materials and photos primarily. Most of the news published on Al-Jazeera was of human interest, but Al-Jazeera has relied very heavily on unreliable accounts, at a rate of 58 percent. The study also concluded that there is a relationship between some of the identifiers and the type of news material that was published by Al-Jazeera on its news site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Some scholars argue that following 9/11, Al-Jazeera has promoted an Arab perspective of events in the US by exporting its news materials to the US news market. The study examines the validity of this argument through a review of the literature on the issue during three successive periods of US-Al-Jazeera interactions: (a) Al-Jazeera Arabic’s representation in US mainstream media following 9/11, specifically during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; (b) Al-Jazeera English television channel’s attempts to enter the US market since 2006; and (c) the reception of Al-Jazeera America in the US, where the paper also adds an original analysis of Al-Jazeera America’s Twitter followers’ profiles. Together, these analyses provide strong counterevidence to the argument that Al-Jazeera was able to promote an Arab perspective of events in the US.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Media plays a significant role in people’s daily life, as it is the first lens through which people see events and phenomena happening worldwide. This research aims to investigate how Al-Jazeera (AJ) and Le Monde (LM) portray and frame the victims and perpetrators of the Charlie Hebdo attack on the 7th of January 2015. The process of framing and representation are investigated as to whether there are similarities and/or differences in the identities of victims and perpetrators between AJ and LM. Adopting a social constructivist perspective and by using Entman’s framing theory, along with both social representation theory and social identity theory. A qualitative content analysis is conducted. The findings indicate certain similarities in how these two media outlets frame the victims and the perpetrators of the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo such as arguing that the perpetrators’ action does not represent Islam. Both medias also try to create a certain level of proximity with the victims. When it comes to the framing of the perpetrators, more differences appear: while AJ frames them as heroes avenging the prophet, LM framed them as stupid people making unprofessional mistakes.

31. Images from the Battlefields: How Al-Jazeera and BBC News Sites Visually Framed the Libyan Revolution.

CONTENT analysis ,NEWS websites ,LIBYAN Conflict, 2011- ,INTERVENTION (International law) - Abstract
The present research examines how the 2011 Libyan Revolution was visually framed on Al-Jazeera English and BBC news sites. Using images embedded in the news links of the two sites, the study investigates the prevalence of six visual frames: people, weaponry type, weaponry ownership, destruction, casualties, and other. The visual content analysis of 250 photographs shows that the people visual frame was the most-prevalent, and was dominated by images of the rebel fighters. While guns dominated the weaponry type frame, casualty and destruction images were rare. Findings also indicate statistically significant differences between the two news sites where images of rebel soldiers, foreign leaders, and weaponry type were more common on Al-Jazeera. Four aspects of the visual frame coverage of the conflict come out strongly, however: the reportage of the Libyan conflict encapsulates support for the military intervention, overall Al-Jazeera offered more visual coverage than BBC, the conflict was visually framed as a "Libyan affair", and as a "bloodless". NEWSROOMS ,STOCHASTIC convergence ,MASS media ,JOURNALISM - Abstract
Through ethnographic observation and content analysis, this study aims to classify the Al-Jazeera Mubasher (AJM) newsroom according to the Schantin model of newsrooms, describe the network's convergence level based on the Dailey, Demo, and Spillman Dynamic Scale Model, and present a unique model elucidating how, specifically, convergence works at AJM. Based on the Schantin model of newsrooms, AJM can be classified as a second-generation newsroom, a "cross-media platforms newsroom." Convergence among the different platforms of AJM is considerable, but still below full convergence level. Accordingly, the AJM newsroom can be classified into the fourth level of the Dailey et al. Dynamic Scale Model — "content sharing." The unique AJM-specific model presented near the end of this paper depicts the ways in which different AJM platforms function and interact inside the newsroom, explains the degree of convergence between platforms, and classifies the newsroom in terms of its convergence level. The Noah's Flood is an incident which has been spoken, written and narrated since the ancient times. There are some evidences in both religious and scientific texts which propose that the Flood actually occurred during the 3000 BC. Although there are no sources to prove where exactly the Flood occurred, however some estimations were made regarding the question. One of those assertion suggests that the Flood probably occurred in the al-Jazeera's Rasulayn city. According to some medieval Arab scholars, the Flood took place in Rasulayn where Noah was native to. Therefore, those writers also suggested that the Flood occurred in Rasulayn region. This article elaborates and questions these suggestions and also investigates the causes of these suggestions made by the Arab scholars. Wo types of sources are used throughout this study. First, the primary sources which narrated of Noah's Flood which occurred in Rasulayn; and secondly, other scientific studies which supported this hypothesis. Also, divine religions' holy scriptures are sometimes referred throughout this study. We use analysing and interpreting as historical scientific research methods during this study. The communication revolution has shifted the paradigm of diplomacy by emphasizing the role of public diplomacy, at the same time complicating the environment within which state-managed public diplomacy is conducted. The rise of regional media has provided weaker states with opportunities to challenge the monopoly of information on the part of the more powerful states. Al-Hurra, the American sponsored channel to the Arab World, stands as evidence of the challenges facing US policies in this part of the world because of the influential role of regional media. It was particularly Al-Jazeera that transformed the media sphere in the Arab World as well as globally in what became known as “Al-Jazeera effect”. The paper argues that identity presentation plays a major role in determining performance of the public diplomacy of the media.

Theory of mediatized war asserts that the study of contemporary wars must consider the role of the media in it. However, while the focus of the mediatization of wars is usually on the power dynamics between the military, the media, and the audiences, the institutional approach to mediatization invites us to consider the role of the media as educators and providers of moral orientation. Thus, the study of mediatized war needs to consider the moral work of news in articulating an ethical solicitation for spectators to reflect upon their responsibility to the suffering of distant others during wartime. Following Judith Butler’s call to reflect on the cultural frames through which ethical solicitation emerges, this article studies Al-Jazeera English’s coverage of the 2008 Gaza War and points to the discursive and performative means through which news constructs distant deaths as grievable and fosters cosmopolitan sentiment. - Abstract
This study examines how Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya, both state-sponsored media, presented the Israeli prime minister’s first official visit to Bahrain in February 2022. The study aims to show differences in the written presentation of the same news in the light of the two different editorial positions of the two channels. The primary sources of analysis are four online published articles, two from Al-Jazeera and two from Al-Arabiya. The study applies qualitative content analysis and uses the discourse analytical ”What’s the problem represented to be” approach (WPR). WPR was used by posing the same predetermined questions to all articles to reveal differences in each channel’s presentation of the visit. The study finds that Al-Jazeera continues to highlight the negative aspects of Arab normalization with Israel, gives voice to oppositional actors who condemn normalization, and underlines the moral aspects of the visit. On the other hand, Al-Arabiya avoids mentioning any part of normalization or any negative element of such a controversial visit. Instead, Al-Arabiya focused on raising how Israel is now a defense partner in combating terrorism from Iran.

This article uses critical discourse analysis (CDA) in order to analyse the discussion of the Muslim dress code (commonly referred to as the hijab) on Al Jazeera’s religious talk show A-Shari’a wal Hayat. Between 1998 and 2003, several episodes dealt with the Turkish and French ban and the ‘issue’ of the headscarf, most of them hosting prominent religious scholar Youssef Qaradawi. Drawing mostly on Fairclough’s critical analytical approach to the media, I will examine, at the micro- or local level, key linguistic strategies and rhetorical arguments deployed by participants (mostly Qaradawi, and to a lesser extent, hosts and viewers) in order to justify their position concerning the nature of the Muslim dress code. This in depth textual/local analysis will be supplemented with a brief analysis at the macro- or global level, which will look at the overall structure of these episodes in order to see the extent to which dominant positions privileged by participants at the micro level are also reinforced by the superstructure of the episodes themselves. Throughout, an intertextual analysis will be used in order to study which religious discourses from the larger socio-cultural context are drawn upon in Al-Jazeera’s discussion of the hijab. The purpose of this multi-levelled analysis is to answer the following questions: Which religious discourses on the hijab are privileged by those talk shows? Are there any differences in the range of opinions covered by the various episodes dealing with the same issue? How are the various positions, when they exist, manifested at the local/global levels of analysis? Most importantly, what do these discussions on the hijab tell us about Al-Jazeera’s self-confessed editorial line (‘the opinion and the other-opinion’) concerning one of the most controversial religious topics for Muslims?

TERRORISM in the press ,AFGHAN War, 2001-2021, in the press - Abstract
Some scholars argue that following 9/11, Al-Jazeera has promoted an Arab perspective of events in the US by exporting its news materials to the US news market. The study examines the validity of this argument through a review of the literature on the issue during three successive periods of US-Al-Jazeera interactions: (a) Al-Jazeera Arabic's representation in US mainstream media following 9/11, specifically during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; (b) Al-Jazeera English television channel's attempts to enter the US market since 2006; and (c) the reception of Al-Jazeera America in the US, where the paper also adds an original analysis of Al-Jazeera America's Twitter followers' profiles. Together, these analyses provide strong counterevidence to the argument that Al-Jazeera was able to promote an Arab perspective of events in the US. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TELEVISION broadcasting of news ,REPORTERS & reporting ,FIFA World Cup (2022 : Qatar) - Abstract
The Al-Jazeera–Qatari nexus is debatable and hard to examine because Qatari affairs are rarely in the news. Recently, Qatar made global headlines in connection with an alleged bribe to win the 2022 World Cup bid, which creates a rare opportunity to examine Al-Jazeera’s coverage of this as well as other Qatari affairs. We compared coverage by Al-Jazeera Arabic, Al-Jazeera English and Al-Jazeera America with coverage of international networks (Sky News, CNN International and ITV). The analysis reveals that while Al-Jazeera English and America maintained high journalistic norms when reporting on the 2022 World Cup controversy, Al-Jazeera Arabic almost never criticizes its Qatari sponsor. The study highlights the dramatic differences between Al-Jazeera’s English and Arabic versions, looking at journalistic values in general and Qatari affairs coverage in particular. The current paper investigates reader commenting on news sites as one facet of journalism 2.0. Specifically, the themes, frequency, and regional coverage of readers’ comments—and in general, their activity levels and distribution—are considered, with a goal to increase knowledge of convergent media and computer-mediated communication (CMC), as well as shed light on the interactivity strategies adopted by influential news producers. The corpus is collected from the Arabic news site of the controversial Middle East-based, bilingual network Al Jazeera. Reader commenting was found to be a regular occurrence on the site but distributed unevenly across stories. The stories focused mostly on themes related to military and political violence, politics, and foreign relations, and covered events related to the Arab world more than other regions. Also, patterns of commenting varied according to day of the week and position of the story on the web page. Overall, these findings suggest that citizen journalism—journalism is performed by lay persons—on Al Jazeera tends to be shaped by the coverage and layout of the news site. Moreover, citizen participation in online news sites such as Al Jazeera is still far from ideal, in that commenters are given neither the access nor the facilitation to use modalities other than written text. These limitations are critiqued in light of contemporary discourses about media convergence and journalism 2.0.

- Abstract
This research investigated the audience’s viewpoint of Al-Jazeera’s Opposite Direction talk show and sought to establish a practical framework for how mass media can uphold their agenda-setting and framing power while disseminating critical, unbiased, resistant-to-state-dominance, and methodical discourse in the Middle East. This region lacks freedom of speech in its media landscape. Respondents (n = 104) completed an online survey to gather their perspectives about the program. Pearson’s correlation coefficients and linear regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Based on the findings, the researcher found that from the perspectives of participants, the talk show was successful in setting the agenda and framing perspective due to its critical content, level of freedom, professionalism of the host, context of discussions, and using familiar and popular terms during discussions. These key concepts were statistically significant in contributing to the program’s popularity and influence. The concepts identified offer a practical framework for maintaining mass media’s power of agenda-setting and shaping perspectives, particularly in the current era of media fragmentation in the Middle East.

Qatar’s successful bid for hosting the 2022 soccer World Cup is regarded as one in a series of attempts to change Qatar’s image as a terror-sponsoring state. To understand the power of hosting megasport events to rebuild a country’s international image, the present study compares the coverage of Qatari sport affairs with concurrent terror-sponsoring allegations, via a sentiment analysis of coverage of Qatari affairs by three international networks (SKY, CNN, and ITV) between August 20, 2013 and December 31, 2014. Surprisingly, the analysis found that terror-related articles contained significantly more positive sentiment than articles on other issues, whereas the tone toward Qatar in sport-related articles was significantly less positive than other topics. The study illustrates the limits of using sport as a soft power strategy, and underscores the superiority of on-the-ground efforts to deflect terror allegations as a strategy for improving a country’s image. The Al-Jazeera network, founded in 1996 and financed directly by Qatar’s royal family, is attributed with a significant catalytic role in the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings that swept the Middle East from 2011. However, the Qatar-based network has been criticized for facilitating and supporting the Tunisian, Egyptian, Syrian and Libyan revolutions, while not giving the same attention to the uprisings in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, close allies to Doha and members (Bahrain and Saudi Arabia) of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Using peace journalism as a source of evaluative criteria, this study examines to what extent Al-Jazeera’s online coverage (Al-Jazeera Arabic (AJA) and Al-Jazeera English (AJE)) reproduced and supported key framings of GCC foreign policy in coverage of two stories: Bahrain’s uprising during the first two weeks of the military Saudi intervention and the Syria conflict in the week that followed the Al-Ghouta Chemical Weapons (CW) attack in Damascus. Al-Jazeera’s online coverage was dominated by the war journalism frames in both countries, but AJA’s coverage of Bahrain’s uprising was more propagandistic than that of AJE. However, AJA and AJE generally agreed on Syria, as both of them were dominated by pro-GCC framing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study is a socio-pragmatic analysis of persuasive strategies used by the participants in "al-ittijāh al-muākis", "The Opposite Direction", on the Al-Jazeera TV channel. An ethnographic approach was adopted in the research; the analysis focused on the use of politeness strategies and face-saving and face-threatening interactions in order to find out their persuasive factors. I observe that religious citations, prophetic sayings, proverbs, and metaphor are used predominantly by the participants in communicating various political issues. I argue that the persuasiveness of these rhetorical strategies stems from their aesthetic influence in establishing moral credibility and in evoking emotional responses. I also argue that these rhetorical strategies are speech acts that indirectly provoke responses and/or aim at saving the speakers' and/or addressees' face. The study concludes that persuasiveness is facilitated in part by transferring socio-pragmatic meanings through the use of some politeness and figurative devices such as honorific modes, metaphors and proverbs. Liceliler, özellikle El-Cezire ve Batı Cephelerinde milli birliklerin yanında yer alarak düşmana karşı direnç göstermişlerdir, Due to its geographical position, Lice has been a critically important town during the First World War and the National Struggle as well as in the earliest periods of history. Starting from Lice the number of those who participated in the battles in Çanakkale, Caucasian, Syria-Palestine, Iraq-Basra and HejazYemen Fronts during the First World War is not at all. While the region was going through one of the most chaotic times in history, the patriotic Liceans did not remain indifferent to the occupation of Bingöl, Bitlis and Muş next to it. During the years of the War of Independence, when a relentless example of resistance was exhibited for the liberation of the Turkish homeland, the Liceans, who tried to cope with a thousand and one difficulties, sided by Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his friends as much as they could. Despite the harmful structure created in the district center, a national organization could not be established. However, the people of Lice supported the national-religious organizations established by the notables and bureaucrats of Diyarbakır. The District Mufti of the period took an exemplary stance by signing the Ankara fatwa. Some of the soldiers of Liceli, the snake from the uninterrupted wars, deserted from the army. Therefore, it was very difficult to maintain order in Lice and its surroundings during the War of Independence. The appeals of some prestigious people in Hani and Kulp regions in favor of national resistance reduced the number of fugitives. Liceans, especially in Al-Jazeera and Western Fronts, resisted the enemy by taking sides with the national troops.
