This study sheds novel light on the factors influencing short-term investments made by businesses. It delves into the impact of previously unexplored variables on working capital requirements at both the firm and macroeconomic levels. These variables include equity issuance activity, corporate yields, free cash flow, retained earnings, depreciation, government oil revenue, and trade levels. The study employs a pooled Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model on a panel dataset spanning the years 2000 to 2014. This investigation extends the existing body of knowledge regarding the determinants of corporate short-term investments in the context of a novel emerging market, specifically the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market. The findings reveal that fluctuations in government oil revenue and trade conditions exert a significant influence on the short-term investments of service businesses in the GCC, with a stronger impact compared to their long-term investments. Considering these findings, GCC economic policymakers could consider implementing targeted interventions to bolster the resilience of service-sector firms. This could include facilitating access to financing channels less susceptible to national economic fluctuations, as well as enacting policies and programs that encourage service firms to diversify their revenue streams through increased export activity and lessened dependence on the domestic market.

AbstractIn light of implementing Western models to develop entrepreneurship capabilities and capital in the Arab Gulf, it has become apparent that a more nuanced and better contextually-situated approach to entrepreneurship development is recommended when dealing with such deeply traditional communities. This paper seeks to provide insight into the relationship between Western and local orientations in terms of entrepreneurship in the Sultanate of Oman. Twenty face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with contemporary Omani entrepreneurs, revealing that these Western Entrepreneurship Orientation (EO) models are perceived as potentially threatening the integrity and harmony of local communities. This perception causes partial resistance toward integrating Western dimensions of EO into the indigenous mindset. Hence, this paper strives to, firstly, identify the Omani cultural orientations that directly impact the application of Western dimensions of EO. Secondly, this paper proposes an alternative scenario for entrepreneurship development through strengthening dimensions of EO taking account of and blending with Omani cultural orientations. The paper will add to the body of literature exploring the impact of indigenous cultures on entrepreneurial orientation. Results offer recommendations to decision-makers and entrepreneurs from Oman and other countries with similar socio-cultural profiles on boosting a culture of entrepreneurship that aligns with preserving cultural heritage and local customs.

DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV show great potential as targets for antibacterial medicines. In recent decades, various categories of small molecule inhibitors have been identified; however, none have been effective in the market. For the first time, we developed a series of disalicylic acid methylene/Schiff bases hybrids (5a-k) to act as antibacterial agents targeting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. The findings indicated that the new targets 5f-k exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with efficacy ranging from 75% to 115% of the standard ciprofloxacin levels. Compound 5h demonstrated the greatest efficacy compared to the other compounds tested, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.030, 0.065, and 0.060 μg/mL against S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. 5h had a MIC value of 0.050 μg/mL against B. subtilis, which is five times less potent than ciprofloxacin. The inhibitory efficacy of the most potent antibacterial derivatives 5f, 5h, 5i, and 5k against E. coli DNA gyrase was assessed. The tested compounds demonstrated inhibitory effects on E. coli DNA gyrase, with IC50 values ranging from 92 to 112 nM. These results indicate that 5f, 5h, 5i, and 5k are more effective than the reference novobiocin, which had an IC50 value of 170 nM. Compounds 5f, 5h, 5i, and 5k were subjected to additional assessment against E. coli topoisomerase IV. Compounds 5h and 5i, which have the highest efficacy in inhibiting E. coli gyrase, also demonstrated promising effects on topoisomerase IV. Compounds 5h and 5i exhibit IC50 values of 3.50 µM and 5.80 µM, respectively. These results are much lower and more potent than novobiocin’s IC50 value of 11 µM. Docking studies demonstrate the potential of compound 5h as an effective dual inhibitor against E. coli DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, with ADMET analysis indicating promising pharmacokinetic profiles for antibacterial drug development.

A novel series of dihydropyrimidine/sulphonamide hybrids 3a–j with anti-inflammatory properties have been developed and tested as dual mPGES-1/5-LOX inhibitors. In vitro assay, results showed that compounds 3c, 3e, 3h, and 3j were the most effective dual inhibitors of mPGES-1 and 5-LOX activities. Compound 3j was the most potent dual inhibitor with IC50 values of 0.92 µM and 1.98 µM, respectively. In vivo, anti-inflammatory studies demonstrated that compounds 3c, 3e, 3h, and 3e had considerable anti-inflammatory activity, with EI% ranging from 29% to 71%. Compounds 3e and 3j were equivalent to celecoxib after the first hour but exhibited stronger anti-inflammatory effects than celecoxib after the third and fifth hours. Moreover, compounds 3e and 3j significantly reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (PGE2, TNF-α, and IL-6) with gastrointestinal safety profiles. Molecular docking simulations explored the most potent derivatives’ binding affinities and interaction patterns within mPGES-1 and 5-LOX active sites. This study disclosed that compound 3j is a promising anti-inflammatory lead with dual mPGES-1/5-LOX inhibition that deserves further preclinical investigation.

AbstractA new series of piperine-carboximidamide hybrids VIa-k was developed as a new cytotoxic agent targeting EGFR, BRAF, and CDK2. The antiproliferative effect against four cancer cells was investigated against erlotinib. Hybrids VIc, VIf, VIg, VIi, and VIk have the highest antiproliferative activity. Compounds VIc, VIf, VIg, VIi, and VIk inhibited EGFR with IC50 values ranging from 96 to 127 nM. Compounds VIf and VIk had the most potent inhibitory activity as BRAFV600E (IC50 = 49 and 40 nM, respectively) and were discovered to be potent inhibitors of cancer cell proliferation (GI50 = 44 and 35 nM against four cancer cell lines, respectively). Compound VIk, the most effective derivative as an antiproliferative agent, demonstrated potent anti-CDK2 action with an IC50 value of 12 nM, which is 1.5-fold more potent than the reference dinaciclib. Finally, VIc, VIf, and VIk have a high capacity to inhibit LOX-IMVI cell line survival.

Background: Eating disorders are complex illnesses with serious long-term consequences. They are linked to negative outcomes such as miscarriage, low birth weight, and other obstetric and postpartum difficulties. Our study in Muscat, Oman, examines the eating habits of pregnant women who consult primary care physicians. In this study, our aim is to identify key sociodemographic factors linked with eating disorders in Oman. Method: We used the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire to assess the potential for the presence of eating disorders. Chi-Square and Fisher’s Exact tests were used to analyze relationships between improper eating behavior and independent variables. Results: The study showed that 1.6% of participants had a potential diagnosis of an eating disorder, with the most common inappropriate behavior being binge eating at a prevalence of 18.8%. A pre-gestational low Body Mass Index (BMI) was associated with a higher prevalence of binge eating during pregnancy. Additionally, we found that pregnant women who were working were more prone to self-induced vomiting. High BMI before pregnancy was significantly associated with various inappropriate eating behaviors, such as restraint behavior (p = 0.000), shape concern (p = 0.000), weight concern (p = 0.040), eating (p = 0.045), laxative use (p = 0.020), and excessive exercise (p = 0.043). Conclusion: The study reveals a high prevalence of eating disorders in pregnancy. Less educated women exhibit higher laxative use, while working women show more instances of binge eating and self-induced vomiting. These findings emphasize the critical need to prioritize targeted interventions and support for vulnerable pregnant women.

IntroductionInvasive species have been identified as a major threat to native biodiversity and ecosystem functioning worldwide due to their superiority in spread and growth. Such superiority is explained by the invasional meltdown phenomena, which suggests that invasive species facilitate the establishment of more invasive species rather than native species by modifying the plant-soil feedback (PSF).MethodsWe conducted a two-phase plant-soil feedback experiment using the native Prosopis cineraria and the invasive Prosopis juliflora in Oman. Firstly, we conditioned the soil by planting seedlings of native species, invasive species, native and invasive species “mixed”, and unconditioned soil served as a control. Secondly, we tested the feedback of these four conditioned soil on the two species separately by measuring the productivity (total biomass) and the performance in the form of plant functional traits (plant height, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf nitrogen content (Nmass), leaf carbon content (Cmass) and specific root length (SRL) of native and invasive species as well as the nutrient availability in soil (soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil total nitrogen (STN)).Results and discussionWe found that the native species produced more biomass, best performance, and higher SOC and STN when grown in soil conditioned by native species, additionally, it gave lower biomass, reduced performance, and lower SOC and STN when grown in the soil conditioned by invasive and mixed species. These results suggest negative PSF for native species and positive PSF for invasive species in the soil conditioned by invasive species, which can be considered as red flag concerning the restoration of P. cineraria as an important native species in Oman, as such positive PSF of the invasive species P. juliflora will inhibit the regeneration of P. cineraria.

Abstract Background HCV infection in hemodialysis units is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. The risk of HCV infection among dialysis patients is higher compared to the general population due to high potential blood exposures in hemodialysis settings. This study aims to assess the national HCV seroprevalence in selected dialysis units and to determine the risk factors for acquiring HCV infection. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted from 1 January to 31 March 2021. A total of 734 patients from 11 hemodialysis centers in Oman were included. Samples were tested simultaneously for HCV antibodies and HCV RNA. HCV genotyping was determined in all viremic patients. Demographic and hemodialysis center related data were gathered and their association with the positive HCV serology were explored using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results Out of 800 patients selected from 11 dialysis units for the study, 734 patients (91.8%) were included. The overall seroprevalence of HCV infection among hemodialysis patients was 5.6%. (41/734). HCV RNA was detected in 31.7% (13/41) of seropositive hemodialysis patients. The most common genotype was subtype 1a, followed by subtype 3. Variables associated with high HCV prevalence were family history of HCV and duration of dialysis. Conclusion The prevalence of infection within hemodialysis patients in Oman has significantly decreased but remained higher than the general population. Continuous monitoring and follow-up, including periodic serosurvey and linkage to care and treatment are recommended. Additionally, practice audits are recommended for identifying gaps and ensuring sustainability of best practices and further improvement.

Tachaea chinensis is an ectoparasite commonly found on diverse ecologically and commercially valuable freshwater shrimps and prawns. Previous studies on this parasite have focused on its distribution and taxonomical identification, while its host preference and/or the potential predation in this host-parasite interaction remained poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the host preference and potential predation of the isopod T. chinensis using manipulative choice and predation experiments under laboratory settings. The preference toward a broad range of host decapods in single-host treatments, indicates a low host specificity, which ultimately aids in the survival of this parasite in the natural environment. Tachaea chinensis responded well to the shrimp Palaemon paucidens when presented with uncommon host species in all three treatments. In host-parasite predation treatments, all the tested P. paucidens shrimp, the prawn Macrobrachium nipponense, and the crayfish Procambarus clarkii were able to consume the isopod–especially the invasive crayfish P. clarkii, which consumed a greater percentage in a considerably shorter time frame (Fisher's exact test, P

In this study, bacteria residing in the gut of the rice weevils (Sitophilus oryzae L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) feeding on aflatoxin-contaminated corn kernels were isolated and evaluated for their ability to suppress Aspergillus flavus and to remove/degrade aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Four morphologically distinct S. oryzae gut-associated bacterial isolates were isolated and identified as Bacillus subtilis (RWGB1), Bacillus oceanisediminis (RWGB2), Bacillus firmus (RWGB3), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (RWGB4) based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. These bacterial isolates inhibited A. flavus growth in the dual culture assay and induced morphological deformities in the fungal hyphae, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. All four bacterial isolates were capable of removing AFB1 from the nutrient broth medium. In addition, culture supernatants of these bacterial isolates degraded AFB1, and the degradation of toxin molecules was confirmed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The bacterial isolates, B. subtilis RWGB1, B. oceanisediminis RWGB2, and P. aeruginosa RWGB4, were capable of producing antifungal volatile organic compounds that inhibited A. flavus growth. These results suggest that the bacterial isolates from S. oryzae gut have the potential to bind and/or degrade AFB1. Further research on their application in the food and feed industries could enhance the safety of food and feed production.

Background: In routine histopathology, 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF) is the choice fixative. However, formalin is a human carcinogen, so there is a necessity for a safer alternative. To the best of our knowledge, neutral honey, not natural or artificial honey, has not been tested to fix histological samples. This study determined the effectiveness of neutral buffered honey and other types of fixatives to fix histological tissues. Methods: The study was conducted between July 2019 and August 2020 at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. Sections from three rat livers, kidneys, and stomach tissues were fixed with 10% NBF, neutral buffered Sumer honey, neutral buffered date honey, formalin, Sumer honey, date honey, alcoholic formalin, alcoholic Sumer honey, and alcoholic date honey for 24 hours. Samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), special stains, and vimentin methods. Three expert biomedical scientists then evaluated the fixed and stained samples for the quality of all sections. The fixation ability of the different honey solutions was then compared to 10% NBF and the utility was determined using nuclear and cytoplasmic criteria, specificity, and intensity. Results: H&E showed adequate staining in all groups compared to 10% NBF. The specificity and intensity of all groups for the Periodic acid–Schiff method were identical to 10% NBF except for Sumer honey and alcoholic date honey. Vimentin showed comparable findings with 10% NBF as there were no significant differences. Conclusions: The findings of this study encourage the use of honey, including neutral, as a possible safe substitute fixative for formalin, however, further experiments on larger specimens should be conducted.

AbstractA new series of indole-2-carboxamides 5a-g, 6a-f and pyrido[3,4-b]indol-1-ones 7a and 7b have been developed as new antiproliferative agents that target both wild and mutant type EGFR. The antiproliferative effect of the new compounds was studied. 5c, 5d, 5f, 5 g, 6e, and 6f have the highest antiproliferative activity with GI50 values ranging from 29 nM to 47 nM in comparison to the reference erlotinib (GI50 = 33 nM). Compounds 5d, 5f, and 5 g inhibited EGFRWT with IC50 values ranging from 68 to 85 nM while the GI50 of erlotinib is 80 nM. Moreover, compounds 5f and 5 g had the most potent inhibitory activity against EGFRT790M with IC50 values of 9.5 ± 2 and 11.9 ± 3 nM, respectively, being equivalent to the reference osimertinib (IC50 = 8 ± 2 nM). Compounds 5f and 5 g demonstrated excellent caspase-3 protein overexpression levels of 560.2 ± 5.0 and 542.5 ± 5.0 pg/mL, respectively, being more active than the reference staurosporine (503.2 ± 4.0 pg/mL). they also increase the level of caspase 8, and Bax while decreasing the levels of anti-apoptotic Bcl2 protein. Computational docking studies supported the enzyme inhibition results and provided favourable dual binding modes for both compounds 5f and 5 g within EGFRWT and EGFRT790M active sites. Finally, in silico ADME/pharmacokinetic studies predict good safety and pharmacokinetic profile of the most active compounds.

Objectives: To assess the quality of life (QoL) of medical residents enrolled in the various postgraduate programs of the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB). Methods: The data for this cross-sectional study was collected from January to June 2022. All postgraduate residents who were enrolled in all 19 OMSB training programs were targeted. An online English version of the validated 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to assess the participants’ self-reported QoL. Results: The participants were 425 OMSB residents (mean age = 29.6±2.2 years), of whom 289 (68.0%) were female, 259 (60.9%) were married, and 295 (69.4%) were enrolled in medical specialties. Overall, female residents reported significantly poorer QoL than male residents in all subscales of SF-36 (p =0.001). Married residents reported lower bodily pain scores than unmarried residents (p =0.005), although the latter endorsed better physical functioning, general health, and mental health. Residents in laboratory specialties had higher scores than those in medical and surgical specialties in most QoL dimensions including physical health, role functioning, energy/fatigue, emotional well-being, bodily pain, and general health (p ≤ 0.003). Psychiatry residents reported the lowest overall QoL. Conclusions: Postgraduate medical residents in Oman reported significant variations in QoL based on specialization, gender, and marital status. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to tackle health inequalities and improve the QoL of this population.

Abstract Introduction root canal treatment is a challenging procedure often first encountered by undergraduate dental students, leading to various difficulties and mistakes. Objective this study aimed to identify the specific difficulties encountered by undergraduate dental students during root canal treatment and the frequency of mistakes they committed in relation to these difficulties. Material and method this study employed a cross-sectional survey design. A cohort of 60 third-year students completed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 27 questions addressing various aspects of endodontic treatment and 11 key areas of root canal procedures. The response options for each question were based on a 4-point Likert scale. Data analysis was performed using Python programming language and heatmaps were created using the seaborn library to better understand the distribution of the data. Result students encounter challenges in developing tactile sensation, accessory cone placement, and accurately reaching the apex during canal location. Dental schools should focus on improving students' tactile skills and methods to reach the apex to enhance the effectiveness of root canal treatment education. In contrast, students reported fewer mistakes in rubber dam application and safety measures during treatment. Dental educators should emphasize proper instrument use and safety precautions during root canal treatment. Interestingly, students did not perceive these areas as problematic despite committing mistakes. Conclusion this study provides valuable insights into the challenges and mistakes encountered by undergraduate dental students during root canal treatment. Dental educators should address these issues to improve students' skills and techniques and provide optimal patient care.
