19. The effect of bis-carboxylic groups of squarylium dyes on the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract

Symmetric squarylium dye (SQIND1) with bi-carboxylic groups has been synthesized and photoelectrochemical properties have been studied in comparison with its non-functionalized analog groups (SQIND2). The experimental results showed that the introduction of anchor carboxylic groups in SQIND1 sensitizer provides a more intimate contact with nanoparticles TiO2which increases the number of charge carriers transferred from the SQIND1 to the semiconductor. The theoretical calculations and absorbance results show that the electron density of LUMO of SQIND1 is delocalized in the whole chromophore, leading to strong electronic coupling between SQIND1 sensitizer and conducting band of TiO2, resulting in improved dye-sensitized solar cell efficiency compared to SQIND2. Hence, the SQIND1 sensitized exhibit better photovoltaic performance. Although, the absence of any linker groups in the SQIND1, then SQIND1 was perfect efficiently sensitized on porous TiO2with the long UV–Vis and NIR region up to 800 nm of the spectrum and showed higher remarkable performance of values, such as ηof 3.3%, a Jscof 7.6 mA/cm2, a Vocof 0.59, and FFof 0.73.

Abstract

The Bombax ceiba L. tree is a member of the family Bombacaceae and the genus Bombax. Both Chinese and Indian traditional medicine have made extensive use of it in the treatment of sickness. Its chemical composition is still a mystery. B. ceiba roots methanol extract (BCRME) was analyzed by different chromatographic analytical techniques in order to identify its major chemical constituents. Twelve compounds and six compounds were identified from GC–MS and LC–MS analysis, respectively. This is the first report on the presence of lathodoratin, cedrene, 4H-1-benzopyran-4-one,8-[{dimethylamino} methyl]-7-methoxy-3-methyl-2-phenyl, asiatic acid, and (E)-2,4,4'-trihydroxylchalcone in B. ceiba roots. Methanol extract demonstrated noteworthy antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC96) (MIC: 100 µg/mL) compare to antibiotic ampicillin (MIC: 250 µg/mL) as well as the highest α-amylase inhibition (IC50=26.91 µg/mL) and α-glucosidase inhibition (IC50=21.21 µg/mL) effects, molecular docking study confirmed these findings, with some compounds having a very high docking score. Abstract

ß-diketone and its five transition metal complexes with stoichiometry [M(L)2(H2O)2] [M= Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3), Ni (4) and Cu (5); [L= 3-hydroxy-3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1-(2-iodo-5-methyl phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one] has been prepared. Ligand (L) was obtained by the well-known Baker-Venkataraman transformation. ß-diketones exist in the intramolecular hydrogen bonded keto-enol tautomerism hence form a metal chelate, as an enolic hydrogen atom can be replaced by metal and ketonic oxygen, thereby completing the chelate ring, hence act as a chelating in the preparation of metal complexes. The synthesized compound has been characterized by NMR, IR, LC-MS and elemental analysis. Solution conductivity and electrochemical behavior were also studied by cyclic voltammetry. The synthesized compounds were screened in vitro for their antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, it is observed that complexation led to a remarkable increase in activities.
