Abstract

We compare bioimpedance analysis (BIA) with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in the assessment of free fat mass (FFM), fat mass (FM) and percentage of body fat under different conditions in relation to age categories, hydration parameters, body mass index (BMI) and sarcopenia. A cross-sectional analysis of body composition was estimated by BIA and DXA in 379 hospitalized elderly patients. In addition, estimates of FFM, FM and percentage of body fat were investigated across different conditions. Paired t-tests, Bland-Altman plot and intraclass correlation coefficient analysis were used to compare methods. Data showed an underestimation of means (BIA versus DXA) of FFM (women: 0,97 kg, p0,01; men: 1,99 kg; p0,01), and an overestimation of both the FM (women: +1,11 kg; p0,01; men: +1,67 kg; p0,01) and percentage of body fat (women: +2,07 %, p0,01; men: +2,82 %, p0,01). BIA underestimated FFM and overestimated FM and percentage of body fat in patients from the age group of 75 to 85 years, in patients with a total body water content60%, in underweight and normal weight patients and in patients with sarcopenia (p0,01). The intraclass coefficient results were indicative of poor reproducibility between BIA and DXA for FFM (women: +0,197; men: +0,250) and FM (women: +0,141; men +0,144). BIA is a good alternative for estimation of FFM and FM only in overweight or obese patients or in patients with good hydration status. BIA, on the other hand, is not an accurate method for assessing FFM in sarcopenic patients.Мы сравнили биоимпедансный метод диагностики с двухэнергетической рентгеновской абсорбциометрией (ДЭХА) в оценке массы свободного жира, массы жира и доли жира в организме в различных условиях в зависимости от возрастных категорий, параметров гидратации, ИМТ и саркопении. Кросс-секционный анализ состава тела был оценен с помощью биоимпедансного метода и ДЭХА у 379 госпитализированных пациентов пожилого возраста. Для сравнения методов использовали парные t-критерии, график Бланда—Альтмана и коэффициент внутригрупповой корреляции. Данные показали недооценку значений (биоимпедансный метод диагностики по сравнению с ДЭХА) массы свободного жира (женщины: 0,97 кг, р0,01; мужчины: 1,99 кг; р0,01), а также завышенную оценку обоих показателей массы жира (женщины: +1,11 кг; р0,01; мужчины: +1,67 кг; р0,01) и процентного содержания телесного жира (женщины: +2,07%, р0,01; мужчины: +2,82%, р0,01). Биоимпедансный метод диагностики занизил показатели массы свободного жира и завысил показатели массы жира, а также процентное содержание жира в организме у пациентов 75–85 лет, у пациентов с общим содержанием воды в организме60%, у пациентов с недостаточной массой тела и нормальной массой, а также у пациентов с саркопенией (р0,01). Результаты внутриклассового коэффициента свидетельствуют о плохой воспроизводимости между биоимпедансным методом диагностики и ДЭХА для массы свободного жира (женщины: +0,197; мужчины: +0,250) и массы жира (женщины: +0,141; мужчины +0,144). С одной стороны, биоимпедансный метод является хорошей альтернативой для оценки массы свободного жира и массы жира только у пациентов с избыточной массой тела или ожирением, а также у пациентов с хорошим гидратационным статусом. С другой стороны, биоимпедансный метод диагностики не является точным методом оценки массы свободного жира у пациентов с саркопенией.

Abstract

Background In collaboration with state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments, CDC established the U.S. Zika Pregnancy Registry (USZPR) in early 2016 to monitor pregnant women with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection and their infants. Methods This report includes an analysis of completed pregnancies (which include live births and pregnancy losses, regardless of gestational age) in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia (DC) with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection reported to the USZPR from January 15 to December 27, 2016. Birth defects potentially associated with Zika virus infection during pregnancy include brain abnormalities and/or microcephaly, eye abnormalities, other consequences of central nervous system dysfunction, and neural tube defects and other early brain malformations. Results During the analysis period, 1,297 pregnant women in 44 states were reported to the USZPR. Zika virus-associated birth defects were reported for 51 (5%) of the 972 fetuses/infants from completed pregnancies with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection (95% confidence interval [CI] = 4%-7%); the proportion was higher when restricted to pregnancies with laboratory-confirmed Zika virus infection (24/250 completed pregnancies [10%, 95% CI = 7%-14%]). Birth defects were reported in 15% (95% CI = 8%-26%) of fetuses/infants of completed pregnancies with confirmed Zika virus infection in the first trimester. Among 895 liveborn infants from pregnancies with possible recent Zika virus infection, postnatal neuroimaging was reported for 221 (25%), and Zika virus testing of at least one infant specimen was reported for 585 (65%). Conclusions and implications for public health practice These findings highlight why pregnant women should avoid Zika virus exposure. Because the full clinical spectrum of congenital Zika virus infection is not yet known, all infants born to women with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection during pregnancy should receive postnatal neuroimaging and Zika virus testing in addition to a comprehensive newborn physical exam and hearing screen. Identification and follow-up care of infants born to women with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection during pregnancy and infants with possible congenital Zika virus infection can ensure that appropriate clinical services are available.

4. Unveiling Monkeypox: A Rare Case of Sexual Transmission in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract

This case report describes the presentation, management, and clinical course of monkeypox in a 30-year-old female with multiple sexual partners admitted to Dammam Medical Complex, a major hospital in eastern Saudi Arabia. The patient presented with a rash on her inner thighs and vagina, accompanied by subjective fever and itching. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of monkeypox. Despite the absence of complications, the patient was isolated and received conservative therapy under the care of the infectious disease team. This case report highlights the effectiveness of conservative therapy in managing monkeypox, testing another possibility of sexually transmitted disease, and emphasizes the role of the infectious disease team in providing comprehensive care to patients with infectious diseases., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright © 2023, Alsaeed et al.)

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest worldwide challenging problems that associates with high morbidity and mortality rates. The resistance of bacteria to various antibiotic classes results in difficulties in the treatment of infectious diseases caused by those bacteria. This paper highlights and provides a critical overview of observational and experimental studies investigating the presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in different environments in Middle East countries and the mechanisms by which bacteria acquire and spread resistance. The data of this research considered the published papers within the last ten years (2010-2020) and was carried out using PubMed. A total of 66 articles were selected in this review. This review covered studies done on antibiotic resistant bacteria found in a wide range of environments including foods, animals, groundwater, aquatic environments as well as industrial and hospital wastewater. They acquire and achieve their resistance through several mechanisms such as antibiotic resistant genes, efflux pumps and enzymatic reactions. However, the dissemination and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria is affected by several factors like anthropogenic, domestic, inappropriate use of antibiotics and the expulsion of wastewater containing antibiotic residues to the environments. Abstract

Background: This study aimed to assess the effects of supplementation with Hoodia Parviflora (H. Parviflora) at 9 mg+200 mg of fructo-oligosaccharides on weight loss, body composition, hydration and satiety parameters., Methods: A randomized blinded controlled trial was conducted in a sample of 30 overweight and obese patients (5 males and 25 females). Patients were randomly assigned in 2 groups: the intervention group, which received H. Parviflora twice a day for 4 weeks and the control group, which received a placebo., Results: After a 4-week follow-up period, the study results showed an improvement of Δ=-1.632 kg (Confidence Interval [CI]95% -2.545; -0.719) and a statistically significant decrease in waist circumference (WC) compared with the placebo group -2.080 cm ([CI]95% -4.082; -0.078). The visual analogue scale reported an improvement of satiety sensation after day 5 (P=0.001)., Conclusions: This study shows for the first time the simultaneous effect of H. Parviflora on weight loss, decreasing satiety, and improving fat mass, in particular Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT).

Abstract

The scientific literature has demonstrated that glutamine is one of the main beneficial amino acids. It plays an important role in gut microbiota and immunity. This paper provides a critical overview of experimental studies (in vitro, in vivo, and clinical) investigating the efficacy of glutamine and its effect on gut microbiota. As a result of this review, we have summarized that glutamine could affect gut microbiota via different mechanisms including the reduction in the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes, with the activation of NF-κB and PI3K-Akt pathways, reducing the intestinal colonization ( Eimeria lesions) and bacterial overgrowth or bacterial translocation, increasing the production of secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) and immunoglobulin A+ (IgA + ) cells in the intestinal lumen, and decreasing asparagine levels. The potential applications of glutamine on gut microbiota include, but are not limited to, the management of obesity, bacterial translocation and community, cytokines profiles, and the management of side effects during post-chemotherapy and constipation periods. Further studies and reviews are needed regarding the effects of glutamine supplementation on other conditions in humans.

8. A Retrospective Epidemiological Study of the Incidence and Risk Factors of Salmonellosis in Bahrain in Children During 2012⁻2016.

Abstract

Salmonellosis is one of the major public health concerns in Bahrain as it has increased rapidly during the past few years. This study aims to determine the prevalence of salmonellosis in children and the possible risk factors such as age, geographical area, nationality, gender, unsafe drinking water, infant born weight and gastrointestinal disease. The cases of salmonellosis in children reported by the Ministry of Health of Bahrain ranged from 21 to 26 per 100,000 population during the period 2012-2016. Salmonellosis cases were geographically concentrated in the capital and northern regions. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference in the number of salmonellosis cases between Bahrainis and non-Bahrainis based on region, and gender ( p < 0.001). In the Bahraini cohort, there was an association between the increase of cases and the number of gastrointestinal disease-related deaths ( p < 0.05). In addition, unsafe water (over the level of 2.14%) and low-birth weight (<3.100 g) were associated, but not statistically significant ( p = 0.086 and p = 0.126, respectively) with the increase of salmonellosis cases. Despite the decline in the number of cases, the results of this study contribute to the understanding of the epidemiology of Salmonella in humans and this, in turn, will help develop and implement preventative measures., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Data showed an underestimation of means (BIA versus DXA) of FFM (women: 0,97 kg, p<0,01; men: 1,99 kg; p<0,01), and an overestimation of both the FM (women: +1,11 kg; p<0,01; men: +1,67 kg; p<0,01) and percentage of body fat (women: +2,07 %, p<0,01; men: +2,82 %, p<0,01). BIA underestimated FFM and overestimated FM and percentage of body fat in patients from the age group of 75 to 85 years, in patients with a total body water content <60%, in underweight and normal weight patients and in patients with sarcopenia (p<0,01). The intraclass coefficient results were indicative of poor reproducibility between BIA and DXA for FFM (women: +0,197; men: +0,250) and FM (women: +0,141; men +0,144). BIA is a good alternative for estimation of FFM and FM only in overweight or obese patients or in patients with good hydration status. BIA, on the other hand, is not an accurate method for assessing FFM in sarcopenic patients.
