1. Reconstructing Late Pleistocene paleoclimate at the scale of human behavior: an example from the Neandertal occupation of La Ferrassie (France)

Abstract: Abstract Exploring the role of changing climates in human evolution is currently impeded by a scarcity of climatic information at the same temporal scale as the human behaviors documented in archaeological sites. This is mainly caused by high uncertainties in the chronometric dates used to correlate long-term climatic records with archaeological deposits. One solution is to generate climatic data directly from archaeological materials representing human behavior. Here we use oxygen isotope measurements of Bos/Bison tooth enamel to reconstruct summer and winter temperatures in the Late Pleistocene when Neandertals were using the site of La Ferrassie. Our results indicate that, despite the generally cold conditions of the broader period and despite direct evidence for cold features in certain sediments at the site, Neandertals used the site predominantly when climatic conditions were mild, similar to conditions in modern day France. We suggest that due to millennial scale climate variability, the periods of human activity and their climatic characteristics may not be representative of average conditions inferred from chronological correlations with long-term climatic records. These results highlight the importance of using direct routes, such as the high-resolution archives in tooth enamel from anthropogenically accumulated faunal assemblages, to establish climatic conditions at a human scale.

Abstract: Abstract The origin of funerary practices has important implications for the emergence of so-called modern cognitive capacities and behaviour. We provide new multidisciplinary information on the archaeological context of the La Ferrassie 8 Neandertal skeleton (grand abri of La Ferrassie, Dordogne, France), including geochronological data -14C and OSL-, ZooMS and ancient DNA data, geological and stratigraphic information from the surrounding context, complete taphonomic study of the skeleton and associated remains, spatial information from the 1968–1973 excavations, and new (2014) fieldwork data. Our results show that a pit was dug in a sterile sediment layer and the corpse of a two-year-old child was laid there. A hominin bone from this context, identified through Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) and associated with Neandertal based on its mitochondrial DNA, yielded a direct 14C age of 41.7–40.8 ka cal BP (95%), younger than the 14C dates of the overlying archaeopaleontological layers and the OSL age of the surrounding sediment. This age makes the bone one of the most recent directly dated Neandertals. It is consistent with the age range for the Châtelperronian in the site and in this region and represents the third association of Neandertal taxa to Initial Upper Palaeolithic lithic technocomplex in Western Europe. A detailed multidisciplinary approach, as presented here, is essential to advance understanding of Neandertal behavior, including funerary practices.

4. Provenance, modification and use of manganese-rich rocks at Le Moustier (Dordogne, France).

Abstract: The use of colouring materials by Neanderthals has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. Here we present a taphonomic, technological, chemical-mineralogical and functional analysis of fifty-four manganese rich lumps recovered during past and on-going excavations at the lower rockshelter of Le Moustier (Dordogne, France). We compare compositional data for archaeological specimens with the same information for twelve potential geological sources. Morphometric analysis shows that material from Peyrony's excavations before the First World War provides a highly biased picture of the importance of these materials for Mousterian groups. These early excavations almost exclusively recovered large modified pieces, while Mn-rich lumps from the on-going excavations predominantly consist of small pieces, only half of which bear traces of modification. We estimate that at least 168 pieces were not recovered during early work at the site. Neanderthals developed a dedicated technology for processing Mn-rich fragments, which involved a variety of tools and motions. Processing techniques were adapted to the size and density of the raw material, and evidence exists for the successive or alternating use of different techniques. Morphological, textural and chemical differences between geological and archaeological samples suggest that Neanderthals did not collect Mn-rich lumps at the outcrops we sampled. The association and variability in Mn, Ni, As, Ba content, compared to that observed at the sampled outcrops, suggests that either the Le Moustier lumps come from a unique source with a broad variation in composition, associating Mn, Ni, As, Ba, or that they were collected at different sources, characterized either by Mn-Ni-As or Mn-Ba. In the latter case, changes in raw material composition across the stratigraphy support the idea that Neanderthal populations bearing different stone tool technologies collected Mn fragments from different outcrops. Our results favour a use of these materials for multiple utilitarian and symbolic purposes.

Abstract: The use of space, both at the landscape and the site level, is considered an important aspect of hominin adaptations that changed through time. At the site level, spatial analyses are typically conducted on deposits thought to have a high degree of temporal resolution. Sites with highly time-averaged deposits are viewed as inferior for these analyses because repeated site visits obscure individual behavioral events. To the contrary, here, we take the view that behaviors that repeat themselves in a spatially structured way through time are exactly the kinds of behaviors that are potentially significant at an evolutionary timescale. In this framework, time averaging is seen not as a hindrance but rather as a necessary condition for viewing meaningful behavior. To test whether such patterning is visible in time-averaged deposits, we use spatial statistics to analyze a number of indices designed to measure lithic production, use and discard behaviors in a multi-layer, late Neandertal cave site in southwest France. We find that indeed some such patterning does exist, and thus sites with highly time-averaged deposits have the potential to contribute to our understanding of how hominin use of space varied through time. This is useful because a great many archaeological sites have highly time-average deposits. Interpreting the spatial patterning will likely require modeling to create expectations in time-averaged and likely emergent contexts such as these. Abstract: 7 fig., 3 tab.; International audience; The Mousterian locus at Pradayrol (Caniac-du-Causse, Lot, France) produced an important lithic assemblage, composed primarily of quartz, alongside a varied flint component. Our technological analysis reveals the presence of several chaînes opératoires adapted to the morphology and mechanical properties of different raw materials. This is especially evident in the use of the bipolar on-anvil technique on quartz cobbles and discoidal flaking methods on both quartz and relatively local flints. Flint from the Périgord region provides evidence for a fragmented and ramified Levallois chaîne opératoire, different from that observed with local raw materials. These techno-economic features are similar to those documented formany late Middle Palaeolithic assemblages in the Quercy. The Neanderthal occupation of Pradayrol seems to reflect a balance between technical know-how and adaptations to the raw material constraints.; Le locus moustérien de Pradayrol (Caniac-du-Causse, Lot, France) a livré une importante série lithique essentiellement composée de quartz et de matériaux apparentés, associés à une composante de silex constituée d’une large gamme de types différents. L’étude technologique de ce matériel met en évidence la présence de plusieurs chaînes opératoires. Des schémas de débitage de conception discoïde sont mis en œuvre sur quartz comme sur silex, d’origine locale ou proche. On remarque cependant une adaptation des méthodes de production aux morphologies et aux propriétés mécaniques des matériaux locaux, notamment avec l’utilisation du débitage bipolaire sur enclume aux dépens de galets de quartz. Un échantillon de silex importé du Périgord atteste une chaîne opératoire de conception Levallois, fractionnée et ramifiée, différente de celle mise en évidence sur les silex locaux. Ces données techno-économiques rapprochent cette série des assemblages quercynois datés du Paléolithique moyen récent. Comme plusieurs autres assemblages moustériens régionaux, Pradayrol livre donc une série où la diversité des choix opérés relève, dans le cadre des modalités d’occupation du site, d’une composition entre savoir-faire techniques et adaptations de l’Homme à son environnement.

Abstract: The grand abri at La Ferrassie (France) has been a key site for Palaeolithic research since the early part of the 20th century. It became the eponymous site for one variant of Middle Palaeolithic stone tools, and its sequence was used to define stages of the Aurignacian, an early phase of the Upper Palaeolithic. Several Neanderthal remains, including two relatively intact skeletons, make it one of the most important sites for the study of Neanderthal morphology and one of the more important data sets when discussing the Neanderthal treatment of the dead. However, the site has remained essentially undated. Our goal here is to provide a robust chronological framework of the La Ferrassie sequence to be used for broad regional models about human behaviour during the late Middle to Upper Palaeolithic periods. To achieve this goal, we used a combination of modern excavation methods, extensive geoarchaeological analyses, and radiocarbon dating. If we accept that Neanderthals were responsible for the Châtelperronian, then our results suggest an overlap of ca. 1600 years with the newly arrived Homo sapiens found elsewhere in France., Open access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL.

Abstract: We report here on an isotopic study of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen isotopes in Equus tooth enamel and dentine from multiple layers from the site of Combe Grenal, France, which date to between approximately 150,000 and 50,000 years BP. We found that there were significant variations in all three elemental isotope ratios through time, although the variations were not synchronous. This study shows the utility of using herbivore tooth dentine carbon and nitrogen isotope values as indicators of environmental changes, in addition to their use as dietary indicators.

14. Late Middle Palaeolithic lithic technocomplexes (MIS 5–3) in the northeastern Aquitaine Basin: Advances and challenges

Abstract: Establishing and interpreting patterns of lithic assemblage variability is of great interest to archaeologists as they shed light on cultural adaptations in the deep past. Nowhere has this topic provoked more interest and debate than in the Middle Palaeolithic of southwestern France. The region's rich archaeological record has produced numerous sites, many of which have been recently excavated and thus provide a reliable dataset for better structuring Mousterian lithic variability. Researchers working with these types of datasets frequently employ the chaine operatoire concept to approach lithic assemblage variability; however, the validity of such analyses has recently been questioned. Here we present results of a combined quantitative and qualitative technological analysis of a large sample of assemblages from numerous well-contextualised sites in the northeastern Aquitaine Basin. We selected clearly identifiable diagnostic elements typical of different flake production systems that can be quantified by different analysts in a replicable fashion. Our results show strong differences in assemblage composition in terms of dominant production systems as well as a smaller number of mixed assemblages that combine two or more flake production methods. When considered together, these results provide not only a means for defining lithic technocomplexes and subsequently comparing assemblages but also for investigating elements of Neanderthal material culture variability.

15. Neandertal subsistence strategies during the Quina Mousterian at Roc de Marsal (France)

Abstract: Recent excavations at the cave site of Roc de Marsal (in the Dordogne region of SW France) have yielded several Mousterian assemblages rich in well-preserved faunal remains. The Layer 4 faunal assemblage, associated with a rich Quina Mousterian occupation, provides an opportunity to investigate Neandertal prey selection, transport decisions and reindeer carcass processing strategies. One of the most striking characteristics of the Roc de Marsal Layer 4 faunal assemblage is an apparent lack of spongy parts that cannot be explained by taphonomic processes or carnivore activities. Limb elements were selectively transported to the site, where they underwent considerable further processing, resulting in a notably high degree of fragmentation of almost all elements. Comparison of reindeer carcass processing strategies employed by Neandertals during the Quina Mousterian with those identified for the later periods of the Upper Palaeolithic gives rise to some unexpected interpretations of Neandertal consumption behaviours. We show that this kind of intensive fragmentation is associated with bone grease rendering in ethnographic and Upper Palaeolithic contexts, in most such cases with the aid of fire. However, evidence of fire is remarkably scarce in Roc de Marsal Layer 4. Layer 4 could reflect a systematic Neandertal practice of sucking and chewing on the spongy portions of bones in order to extract as much of the highly nutritious bone grease as possible. Additionally, Roc de Marsal Layer 4 shows examples of use of animal resources for non-alimentary purposes by Neandertals. The abundance of cutmarks on the anterior surfaces of reindeer metapodials seems to indicate the acquisition of tendons, and bones were frequently used as retouchers.

Abstract: The plant component of Neanderthal subsistence and technology is not well documented, partially due to the preservation constraints of macrobotanical components. Phytoliths, however, are preserved even when other plant remains have decayed and so provide evidence for Neanderthal plant use and the environmental context of archaeological sites. Phytolith assemblages from Roc de Marsal, a Middle Paleolithic cave site in SW France, provide new insight into the relationship between Neanderthals and plant resources. Ninety-seven samples from all archaeological units and 18 control samples are analyzed. Phytoliths from the wood and bark of dicotyledonous plants are the most prevalent, but there is also a significant proportion of grass phytoliths in many samples. Phytolith densities are much greater in earlier layers, which is likely related to the presence of combustion features in those layers. These phytoliths indicate a warmer, wetter climate, whereas phytoliths from upper layers indicate a cooler, drier environment. Phytoliths recovered from combustion features indicate that wood was the primary plant fuel source, while grasses may have been used as surface preparations. Abstract: International audience; Neanderthal material culture patterning in Western Europe has been primarily approached from retouched stone tools and associated flake production methods. While considerable effort has been devoted over the past decade to better characterize Middle Palaeolithic lithic techno-complexes (LTCs) in this region, the extent to which they reflect cultural groups still remains unclear. In this respect, integrating other forms of archaeological evidence could provide valuable insights on the cultural significance of late Middle Palaeolithic industrial variability. The site of Combe-Grenal (Dordogne, France) has yielded consistent evidence of mineral pigment use throughout the upper part of the sequence. Here we explore whether mineral pigments might be embedded with an indexical meaning and if changes in pigment exploitation potentially reflect cultural changes. We combined a microscopic use-wear approach with SEM-EDS, pXRF, and XRD analyses of 73 pigment fragments from layers 26 to 11 in order to reconstruct the different stages of their acquisition and use (provenance, selection, processing, function). Our results show manganese oxides to have been used in the lower layers of the Quina LTC, while red and/or yellow iron oxide pieces were employed during the Discoid and Discoid/Levallois LTCs. This decrease in manganese oxide use correlates with a change in lithic technology and may represent some form of cultural change.

Abstract: Le programme collectif de recherche réseau de lithothèques en Auvergne-Rhône-Alpesexiste depuis 12 ans. Il est à l’initiative d’une synergie désormais reconnue sur l’origine des matièrespremières. Sa fonction est essentielle dans la consolidation d’une structure coopérative de rechercheaux échelles régionale et nationale. Démarche nécessaire, qui ouvre des perspectives nouvelles etirremplaçables dans le domaine des comportements techno-économiques, des circulations et desrapports intersites.Le présent rapport expose un état de l’art des actions mis en place afin de poursuivre de façon efficace lebut principal du programme : proposer aux préhistoriens un mode d’action pluridisciplinaire et évolutifqui une fois couplé à la technologie lithique permet une meilleure connaissance de la provenance etde la circulation des silex.Cette année le PCR a été financé par la DRAC Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, les conseils généraux de l’Ain,de l’Isère, de la Savoie et la SARL Paléotime dans le cadre des opérations programmées. Grâce à cesfinancements et les contributions des membres de l’équipe, nous pouvons présenter un bilan qui vaservir de tremplin à une structure de plus en plus interconnectée. Au démarrage de cette nouvelletriennale le pôle recherche constitué au sein du PCR offre un cadre qui a toutes les qualités poursoutenir un travail de fonds, sur une conception unitaire et dynamiques des problématiques telles que: les lithothèques d’un territoire et la manière de les améliorer, l’inventaire des formations à silex, lacaractérisation des matériaux, la représentation des géoressources, la diffusion et la conservation desrésultats. Les axes désormais privilégiés ont été impulsés par deux actions majeures qui ont eu lieu auP.C.R. Réseau de lithothèques en Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes : rapport d’activité 20184cours de la précédente triennale. L’organisation en 2016 d’une école thématique à Nice par D. Binder(CNRS, CEPAM) et P. Fernandes (SARL Paléotime) et la réalisation d’une enquête nationale sur leslithothèques sous l’égide du CNRS, du Ministère de la Culture, de l’Inrap et de Paléotime (organisée parC. Bressy-Leandri). Ces deux initiatives ont permis d’identifier les attentes de la part de la communautédes préhistoriens. C’est à ces attentes que nous avons décidé de répondre : formation à la caractérisationdes silex - développement de l’outil lithothèque - normalisation des critères descriptifs - mutualisationde bases de données harmonisées sans oublier de garder le contact avec le territoire les acteursrégionaux.Pour cette triennale les membres du bureau ont donc choisi les axes suivants :• Axe 1 : formation à la caractérisation des silex, utilisation des nouvelles fiches ;• Axe 2 : développement de l’outil lithothèque, travail sur les lithothèques régionales ;• Axe 3 : maintenir un niveau d’activité en équilibre dans chacun des douze départements de lagrande région ;• Axe 4 : normalisation des critères descriptifs, élaboration d’une terminologie à l’échelle nationale ;• Axe 5 : applications au mobilier archéologique ;• Axe 6 : vers une mutualisation des bases de données et une valorisation des résultats, afin d’enrichirun pôle de compétences pluridisciplinaire régional intégrable au projet national.Les différents axes ainsi sélectionnés sont à la fois didactiques, patrimoniaux, recherche-développement,valorisation-diffusion. Ils témoignent du dynamisme d’une équipe soudée et de plus en plus interactiveau fil des ans. Ces axes sont complémentaires et doivent permettre à la fin de cette triennale de poserles bases d’une structure offrant la possibilité à toutes les personnes qui avaient exprimé ces attentesde bénéficier de méthodes et d’outils qui correspondent aux besoins de l’archéologie moderne.Ce programme réuni chaque année un groupe de participants convaincus de l’importance d’une telledémarche collective. Il est à l’origine d’une structure mêlant partage et harmonisation des bases dedonnées. Il est déjà partie prenante d’un projet national, le GDR SILEX coordonné par C. Bressy-Léandri.Il fait progresser les connaissances sur la question des comportements des Hommes préhistoriques parrapport aux géoressources. En parallèle, il a permis de créer de nouveaux liens au sein de la communautédes préhistoriens. Cette synergie facilite aujourd’hui les contacts et les échanges d’informations surune grande partie du territoire français (Auvergne-Rhône-alpes, PACA, Nouvelle aquitaine, Centre Valde-Loire, Ile de France). Elle est sans doute la meilleure solution pour tordre le cou aux problèmesrégulièrement posés par certains silex d’origine lointaine. La formation aux nouvelles méthodesd’inventaires ou de caractérisation doit permettre à toutes les personnes concernées d’utiliser unbagage commun et en cela participer au développement de la pétroarchéologie, de la tracéologie, dela taphonomie et de la géoarchéologie en améliorant le dialogue entre les acteurs de ces différentesdisciplines.

20. Importance des données de terrain pour la compréhension d’un potentiel dépôt funéraire moustérien : le cas du squelette de Regourdou 1 (Montignac-sur-Vézère, Dordogne, France)

Abstract: Excepté dans les travaux de E. Bonifay (pour l’un des plus récents, voir Bonifay et al. 2007) et dans différentes contributions qui ont repris ces derniers (p. ex. Binant 1991 ; Defleur 1993 ; Maureille et Vandermeersch 2007 ; Pettitt 2011 voir aussi l’analyse plus critique de May 1986), la position in situ des restes humains de Regourdou 1, provenant de la couche 4 du site n’a jamais été discutée ni sur la base de l’opération de sauvetage réalisée en octobre 1957 (opération dirigée par E. Bonifay et G. Laplace-Jauretche, sous l’autorité administrative de F. Bordes), ni suite aux fouilles programmées dirigées par E. Bonifay entre 1961 et 1964.Après une synthèse des informations disponibles contenues dans de nombreux documents inédits (minutes de terrain de François Bordes, dessins réalisés lors de l’opération de sauvetage, photographies réalisées en 1957 puis en 1961 et 1962, base de données des fouilles 1961-1964) et d’un nouvel inventaire des restes humains (connus et nouvellement découverts), les ossements de Regourdou 1 ont pu être en majorité repositionnés au sein d’un système orthonormé. Ces nouveaux documents permettent de supposer que la concentration de vestiges mis au jour lors de l’opération de sauvetage se situait dans le carré G2 du carroyage des fouilles débutées en 1961.Ils mettent également en évidence que, même si pratiquement aucune connexion anatomique n’est décelée avec certitude et malgré des perturbations très importantes (la totalité des ossements se répartit in fine sur près de neuf carrés : G1 à G3, F1 à F3, E1, E2 et D2), ces restes se distribuent surtout en G2 et en G3 en respectant la logique anatomique du corps humain. Ces observations permettent de suggérer que Regourdou 1 était plutôt en position allongée, la tête à l’ouest - peut-être ramenée sur le tronc - à proximité de la paroi de la cavité. Ce résultat est donc différent de l’hypothèse de la position fœtale proposée dans Bonifay et al. (2007). De plus, de nombreuses perturbations post-dépositionnelles du dépôt initial humain durant le Pléistocène se sont produites probablement en liaison avec la fréquentation de la cavité par l’Ours brun et les lagomorphes.Nous espérons que de nouvelles fouilles du site, et particulièrement l’étude du rôle de l’Homme dans l’accumulation des vestiges de la couche 4 (selon la stratigraphie de Bonifay 1964), nous permettront de discuter des causes de la présence de ce néandertalien et, peut-être, de l’absence de sa boîte crânienne. Aside from the work of Bonifay (see Bonifay et al. 2007 for one of the more recent papers) and various articles following these earlier works (e.g., Binant 1991, Defleur 1993, Maureille et Vandermeersch 2007, Pettitt 2011, see also May 1986 for a more critical analysis), the in situ position of the remains of Regourdou 1 from layer 4 has never actually been discussed on the basis of available data from the salvage operation carried out in October 1957 by E. Bonifay and G. Laplace-Jauretche, under the administrative authority of François Bordes, or from the subsequent, more systematic, excavations directed by E. Bonifay between 1961 and 1964.Via the compilation of available information from a number of unpublished documents (François Bordes’ field notes, drawings made during the salvage operation, photographs taken in 1957, 1961 and 1962, as well as databases from the 1961 to 1964 excavations), and also a new inventory of human remains (both previously known and recently discovered), it is now possible to more accurately reconstruct the position of the human remains in a Cartesian system. In this, we assume that the concentration of remains uncovered during the salvage operation was in square G2, according to the preliminary systematic excavations carried out in 1961. They also bring to light that while practically no anatomical connections can be demonstrated with any certainty – and despite significant disruptions (all of the hominin remains are spread over 9 squares: G1 to G3, F1 to F3, E1 and E2, D2) – are mainly positioned in squares G2 and G3 to some degree with respect to the anatomical logic of the human body. We therefore assume that Regourdou 1 was lying flat, with its head to the west – perhaps upon its trunk – close to the wall of the cavity. This result is different from the fetal position hypothesis proposed in Bonifay et al. (2007). Moreover many post-depositional (albeit Pleistocene) disturbances are also evident. We believe that they were likely the result of the utilization and modification of the cavity by brown bears and lagomorphs.Only new excavations at the site, and a better taphonomic understanding of Bonifay’s (1964) layer 4 (in which Regourdou 1 was found), and the exact role of humans in its formation, i.e., their anthropic impact on the layer, will allow us to discuss in more detail the nature of the deposition of the body, and, hopefully, the absence of the skull.

21. Cleaning up a Messy Mousterian: How to describe and interpret Late Middle Palaeolithic chrono-cultural variability in Atlantic Europe

Abstract: OBJECTIVES We provide the description and comparative analysis of six new teeth from the site of La Ferrassie. Our goal is to discuss their taxonomic attribution, and to provide an updated inventory of Neandertal and modern human remains from La Ferrassie in their associated archeological context. MATERIALS AND METHODS We use external and internal anatomy, classic morphometrics, and geometric morphometrics. The teeth from La Ferrassie are compared to several samples of contemporary Neandertals and upper Paleolithic modern humans and to recent modern humans. RESULTS Three specimens are classified as Neandertals, two as modern humans, and one remains unclassified. DISCUSSION Based on the previously known fossil samples and the new teeth reported here, there are currently a minimum of four adult and five immature Neandertal individuals coming from the "Grand Abri" and a minimum of two modern human adult individuals: one from "Grand Abri" and one from "Grotte." It is noteworthy that the spatial distribution of the recovered Neandertal remains is not restricted to the area where the LF1-LF 8 were found but now covers the full extension of the excavated area. Moreover, while both Neandertal and modern human occupations have yielded isolated human remains, the partial-to-complete skeletons only belong to Neandertals. These considerations open new perspectives for the understanding of the occupation and use of the La Ferrassie site.

23. Importance of field data for understanding a potential Mousterian funerary deposit : the case of the Regourdou 1 skeleton (Montignac-sur-Vézère, Dordogne, France)

Abstract: Aside from the work of Bonifay (see Bonifay et al. 2007 for one of the more recent papers) and various articles following these earlier works (e.g., Binant 1991, Defleur 1993, Maureille et Vandermeersch 2007, Pettitt 2011, see also May 1986 for a more critical analysis), the in situ position of the remains of Regourdou 1 from layer 4 has never actually been discussed on the basis of available data from the salvage operation carried out in October 1957 by E. Bonifay and G. Laplace-Jauretche, under the administrative authority of Francois Bordes, or from the subsequent, more systematic, excavations directed by E. Bonifay between 1961 and 1964. Via the compilation of available information from a number of unpublished documents (Francois Bordes’ field notes, drawings made during the salvage operation, photographs taken in 1957, 1961 and 1962, as well as databases from the 1961 to 1964 excavations), and also a new inventory of human remains (both previously known and recently discovered), it is now possible to more accurately reconstruct the position of the human remains in a Cartesian system. In this, we assume that the concentration of remains uncovered during the salvage operation was in square G2, according to the preliminary systematic excavations carried out in 1961. They also bring to light that while practically no anatomical connections can be demonstrated with any certainty – and despite significant disruptions (all of the hominin remains are spread over 9 squares : G1 to G3, F1 to F3, E1 and E2, D2) – they are mainly positioned in squares G2 and G3 to some degree with respect to the anatomical logic of the human body. We therefore assume that Regourdou 1 was lying flat, with its head to the west – perhaps upon its trunk – close to the wall of the cavity. This result is different from the fetal position hypothesis proposed in Bonifay et al. (2007). Moreover many post-depositional (albeit Pleistocene) disturbances are also evident. We believe that they were likely the result of the utilization and modification of the cavity by brown bears and lagomorphs.Only new excavations at the site, and a better taphonomic understanding of Bonifay’s (1964) layer 4 (in which Regourdou 1 was found), and the exact role of humans in its formation, i.e., their anthropic impact on the layer, will allow us to discuss in more detail the nature of the deposition of the body, and, hopefully, the absence of the skull.

Abstract: International audience; Discoveries of the two last decades in Eurasia renew the knowledge on the earliest evidence of occupation. France widely contributes to the anderstanding of these periods, and since the publication in 1976 of the three volumes of La Préhistoire Française, the number of in situ sites with well-dated sequences has greatly increased. This state of knowledge voluntary focuses on the key sites discovered since 1976, some being still in ongoing excavations, or largely published. The data is obviously not complete. It is however a strong overview of the major sites and the avialable interdisciplinary patterns. Our chronological framework depends on the current data, from around 1.5 Ma for the earliest ages. We have selected the latest sites with Acheulean-type series but also series without a few bifaces. Our chronological upper border is the transition MIS6-MIS5.Theearliest traces of occupations are located on the southern half of France, from the Massif central to the Loire Basin and the Mediterranean coast. Ages vary between 1.5 and 1 Ma. Then, since 700 ka, the number of sites increases, some with bifaces, and are located overall national territory. It is due to the development of fieldworks through research programs or public-construction projets. They helped discover new open-air sites for instance in the Somme, Loire and Aquitaine Basns. Morever, vace sites were also revised by new research projets and fieldworks. The chapiter is both chronological and geographical. France has been divised in areas according to geological and hydrographical features : North, from Brittany to the North of the Seine River and the centre of the Paris Basin; South-West including the Aquitaine Basin to the Pyrenees Mountains and the Charente; Massif central and the Loire Basin; South-East including the Rhône Basin and the Mediterranean coast.; Les découvertes des deux dernières décennies sur l'ensemble de l'Eurasie renouvellent nos connaissances sur les plus anciens peuplements. La France contribue largement à alimenter les connaissances de ces périodes, et depuis la publication des trois tomes de La Préhistoire Française en 1976, les gisements in situ avec des séquences bien datées se sont multipliées. Le bilan des connaissances s'est volontairement focalisé sur les sites majeurs in situ découverts depuis 1976, certains étant encore en cours de fouilles, d'autres ayant été largement publiés depuis 1976. S'il n'est pas exhaustif, il est représentatif et s'appuie sur un bilan interdisciplinaire des données disponibles. Notre fourchette chronologique dépend des données actuelles, soit plus d'1,5 Ma pour la limite supérieure. Pour son extension la plus récente, nous avons retenu les sites les plus tardifs ayant livré des assemblages avec des bifaces de type "Acheuléen" mais aussi quelques sites avec peu ou pas de bifaces jusqu'à la transition MIS6-MIS5.Les plus anciennes traces de peuplement se concentrent sur la moitiés sud de le France entre Massif central, bassin de la Loire et côte méditerranéenne, avec des occupations entre 1,5 et 1 Ma. Puis, à partir de 700 Ka, les sites deviennent beaucoup plus nombreux, certains livrant des séries à biface et se répartissent sur l'ensemble du territoire. Ces données s'appuient sur les fouilles programmées ou préventives qui ont permis d'argumenter considérablement le corpus des sites de plein air en France et sur les bassins de la Somme, la Loire et aquitain. Un grand nombre de sites en grottes ont également été actualisés.Notre présentation de ce bilan est chronologique et géographique. La France a été découpée en plusieurs zones géographiques obéissant à une logique orohydrographique et géologique : le Nord, de la Bretagne au nord de la Seine et au centre du Bassin Parisien ; le Sud-Ouest incluant le bassin aquitain, jusqu'aux Pyrénées, et les Charentes ; le Massif central et le bassin hydrographique de la Loire ; le Sud-Est incluant le bassin du Rhône et la côte méditerranéenne.

Abstract: Dans le cadre de plusieurs Projets Collectifs de Recherches1, un partenariat avec le Centre National de Prehistoire a Perigueux a permis de realiser la numerisation au 1/10 000 de tous les polygones identifies comme correspondant a des formations a silex dans le departement de la Dordogne. Ce travail, realise avec les logiciels ArcGIS et QGis en utilisant les cartes geologiques au 1/50 000 numerisees et georeferencees, disponibles dans le service web Infoterre du BRGM, a permis la production d'une base de donnees unique sur les georessources. Une fois numerisees et caracterisees de facon homogene, les formations a silex servent a visualiser les georessources actuelles et donc a emettre des hypotheses sur les strategies d'approvisionnement et de deplacement des populations prehistoriques. Les donnees sur les formations a silex ont ete transferees sur ArcGISOnLine (AGOL), une plateforme cartographique d'ESRI2 qui permet de diffuser et de partager des donnees georeferencees de facon securisee. Lors de cette etape, des differences de geometrie sont apparues entre les donnees d'origine et les donnees apres leur importation sur la plateforme AGOL. Un controle systematique de la qualite de la numerisation et des transformations des fichiers apres leur transfert sur la plateforme AGOL, est apparu indispensable. Il s'agit d'une garantie de la qualite des donnees pour les partenaires du projet. Si ce controle n'avait pas ete fait, des erreurs d'interpretation auraient pu apparaitre, notamment lors de l'utilisation de fonctionnalites d'analyse spatiale avec ces donnees, pour lesquelles la qualite de la geometrie est essentielle. Cette communication vise a souligner l'importance des etapes du controle qualite des donnees georeferencees, non seulement lors de leur numerisation initiale mais aussi lors de leurs traitements et de leurs transferts vers diverses plateformes de diffusion et de partage de donnees.

Abstract: Resume Les niveaux archeologiques de l’abri sous-roche Baume-Vallee (Haute-Loire), dans le Sud-Est, du Massif central, fouilles par A. Laborde (de 1966 a 1973), puis par J.-P. Raynal (de 1974 a 1996), ont livre un materiel lithique abondant attribue au Paleolithique moyen recent, avec une grande diversite de matieres premieres. L’industrie lithique des unites superieures fut tout d’abord rattachee au facies charentien lato sensu , puis ulterieurement attribuee au Mousterien de type Ferrassie. Sa revision technologique et techno-economique livre de nouvelles informations sur les concepts de debitage et le fractionnement des chaines operatoires mises en œuvre, donnees qui permettent d’inclure desormais cette serie au sein des techno-complexes Levallois a racloirs, frequemment observes au Paleolithique moyen recent dans un grand Sud-Est de la France.

Abstract: Located in southwest France, Roc de Marsal is a cave with a rich Mousterian stratigraphic sequence. The lower part of the sequence (Layers 9–5) are characterized by assemblages dominated by Levallois lithic technology associated with composite faunal spectra (including red deer, roe deer and reindeer) that shows a gradual increase in the frequency of reindeer. The top of the sequence (Layers 4–2) are characterised instead by Quina lithic technology (both in terms of technology and typology) with the faunal remains dominated by reindeer. Roc de Marsal thus provides a very interesting case study to place behavioural changes in a context of changing climates and environments in western Europe during the late Pleistocene. To link the occupations at Roc de Marsal with global and regional climatic conditions known independently, a robust chronology is needed. With this aim in mind, we applied three luminescence dating methods (TL, OSL and IRSL) on different minerals (flint, quartz and K-feldspar extracts). Here the results of two of these methods are presented in detail (TL and OSL) and compared with preliminary IRSL data. At Roc de Marsal, a comparison of methods was necessary to overcome a complex sedimentary history, with very heterogeneous dose rate distributions, both at the beta (mm) and gamma (dm) dose rate scales. The results indicate that the lower Levallois layers are dated to ∼65–70 ka, while overlying Quina layers are dated to ∼49 ka. These ages for the lower layers fit well with some models that place mixed faunal assemblages in the initial MIS 4; however, while the Quina ages overlap with several other Quina assemblages from the region, they place the reindeer dominated fauna well after the peak cold of MIS 4 and suggest a more extended and complex period of contemporaneous lithic techno-complexes than posited by some current models.

Abstract: International audience; The Middle Palaeolithic of southwestern France has long been a testing ground for models of Nean-derthal lithic assemblage variability and mobility strategies. Advances in our understanding of the lithological structure of the northern Aquitaine Basin combined with numerous raw material studies allows connections between different areas of the region to be revealed based on the movement of particular 'tracer' materials. By comparing technological data with raw material transport patterns elements of Late Neanderthal techno-economic behaviour emerge. Raw materials were transferred over longer distances in both the Levallois and Quina techno-complexes compared to the Discoid techno-complexes, where evidence for similar movements are almost entirely absent. Comparing these patterns of raw material provisioning and transfer against the distribution of key Middle Palaeolithic sites forms the basis of a new model for the territorial organisation of Late Neandertal groups in the Aquitaine Basin to be built.

Abstract: International audience; Establishing and interpreting patterns of lithic assemblage variability is of great interest to archaeologists as they shed light on cultural adaptations in the deep past. Nowhere has this topic provoked more interest and debate than in the Middle Palaeolithic of southwestern France. The region's rich archaeological record has produced numerous sites, many of which have been recently excavated and thus provide a reliable dataset for better structuring Mousterian lithic variability. Researchers working with these types of datasets frequently employ the chaîne opératoire concept to approach lithic assemblage variability; however, the validity of such analyses has recently been questioned. Here we present results of a combined quantitative and qualitative technological analysis of a large sample of assemblages from numerous well-contextualised sites in the northeastern Aquitaine Basin. We selected clearly identifiable diagnostic elements typical of different flake production systems that can be quantified by different analysts in a replicable fashion. Our results show strong differences in assemblage composition in terms of dominant production systems as well as a smaller number of mixed assemblages that combine two or more flake production methods. When considered together, these results provide not only a means for defining lithic technocomplexes and subsequently comparing assemblages but also for investigating elements of Neanderthal material culture variability.

Abstract: Une carte des principales formations à silex du sud de la France est en cours de réalisation. Elle propose, à tous les préhistoriens, une base nécessaire au développement d’études interrégionales sur la circulation des silex. Elle est le fruit d’une collaboration entre des acteurs impliqués dans la problématique de caractérisation de la provenance des silex. Elle regroupe les résultats de leurs prospections systématiques ou ciblées dans six régions (Aquitaine, Auvergne, Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées, Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur, Rhône-Alpes). Elle intègre, en plus, le dépouillement d’un grand nombre de documents : i) les principaux articles et thèses traitant des formations à silex du sud de la France ; ii) plus de 200 fiches issues de la base de données du sous-sol BSS du BRGM, qui permettent de visualiser des logs ou des documents scannés ; iii) 529 cartes géologiques à 1/50 000 et leurs notices. La carte est organisée en trois couches de données superposables : une carte des affleurements ou gîtes primaires, une carte des altérites et des formations superficielles remaniées et une carte des formations alluviales. La carte existera dans deux versions numériques aisément actualisables : une version dans un format PDF et une version sous la forme d’un SIG. C’est l’ensemble de la formation contenant le ou les même(s) type(s) de silex qui est prise en compte, le terme de formation désignant un terrain possédant des caractères communs et qui constitue un ensemble cartographiable. Chacune des formations recensées fait l’objet d’une notice simplifiée qui décrit l’encaissant et - le ou les - type(s) de silex présent(s). Ces notices descriptives et explicatives contiennent des photos à toutes les échelles (de la formation à l’échelle microscopique). Des références bibliographiques géologiques et archéologiques complèteront chaque notice. La version définitive de ces notices constituera un atlas. Les archéologues et géologues disposeront ainsi de fiches descriptives pour chaque type de silex et son encaissant. Elles serviront aux diagnoses analytiques (structures, textures et compositions minéralogiques). A map of the main flint bearing formations in the South of France is under construction. It will provide an essential basis to develop interregional studies about flint procurements and travels. It results from collaboration between actors involved in topic flint sourcing. It includes results of their systematic surveys and studies in six regions (Aquitaine, Auvergne, Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrenees, Provence-Alpes - Côte d’Azur, Rhône-Alpes). Moreover, it includes a large number of associated data : i) The main papers and those dealing with flint bearing formations of southern France, ii) more than 200 records from the under-soil database BSS BRGM, which give access to logs or scanned documents iii) 529 geological maps at 1/50 000 and their leaflets. The map is organized in three superimposed layers : a map of outcrops or primary deposits, a map of surficial weathered formation and a revised map of alluvial formations. The map is available in two versions which are easily updatable : a PDF version and an interactive GIS version. In this document, every formation containing the same type (s) (s) of flint is taken into account and forms a mappable entity. Every listed formation is linked to a text which describes the parent rock and/or the type(s) of flint(s). These records contain descriptive and explanatory pictures at different scale (naked eye to microscopic scale). Geological and archaeological references complement every record. The final version will constitute an atlas. Archaeologists and geologists will find description sheets of every type of flint and bearing rock. They will help for analytical diagnoses (structure, texture and mineralogical composition).

Abstract: The question of intentional Neanderthal interment continues to be debated in paleoanthropology. Among the criteria that can be used to investigate the intentionality of a burial, many of them rely on geoarchaeological data that speak to the context of the human remains. In this paper, we revisit the original attribution of the Roc de Marsal Neandertal infant as an intentional burial by evaluating the sedimentary context, pit structure, and taphonomical aspects of the remains and their integration with data from the most recent excavations at the site. From a geoarchaeological point of view, no clear anthropogenic ritual signature was found. On the contrary, all the available evidence points towards natural formation processes associated with the initial deposition and subsequent burial of the Roc de Marsal Neandertal infant.

Abstract: The importance of the transport of stone artefacts in structuring Neandertal lithic assemblages has often been addressed, but the degree to which this led to fragmentation of lithic reduction over Middle Palaeolithic landscapes has not been explicitly studied thus far. Large-scale excavations of Middle Palaeolithic open-air sites and refitting studies of the retrieved assemblages have yielded new, high-resolution data on the mobile aspects of Neandertal stone tool technology. In this paper, we integrate lithic technology and raw material data from recent studies of Middle Palaeolithic open-air and rock shelter sites in Western Europe. We demonstrate that the results of a variety of typological, technological (especially refitting), and lithological studies have important consequences for our knowledge of the acquisition of raw materials and subsequent production, usage and discard of stone artefacts in the Middle Palaeolithic. Neandertal production and use of stone tools was fragmented in three domains: the spatial, the temporal and the social domain. We show that this versatile segmentation of stone artefact handling strategies is a main determinant of the character of the Neandertal archaeological record. Our data testify to ubiquitous and continuous transport of stone artefacts of a wide variety of forms, picked by Neandertals using selection criteria that were sometimes far removed from what archaeologists have traditionally considered, and to some degree still consider, to be desired end products of knapping activities. The data presented here testify to the variability and versatility of Middle Palaeolithic stone tool technology, whose fragmented character created very heterogeneous archaeological assemblages, usually the product of a wide variety of independent import, use, discard and/or subsequent transport events.

Abstract: In a reply to our paper presenting new evidence supporting an intentional Neanderthal burial at La Chapelle-aux-Saints (Correze, France), Dibble et al. (2015) reviewed our data in relation to the original Bouyssonie publications. They conclude that alternative hypotheses can account for the preservation of the human remains within a pit. Here we present new data from our recent excavations and highlight several misinterpretations of the Bouyssonie publications, which, when taken together refute most of their arguments. Moreover, we show that the different hypotheses proposed by Dibble et al. cannot work together and fail to provide a credible explanation for the deposit, reinforcing our demonstration that the burial hypothesis remains the most parsimonious explanation for the preservation of the Neanderthal skeletal material at La Chapelle-aux-Saints.

Abstract: International audience; The nature of the Lower-Middle Palaeolithic transition has been one of the most debated questions in early Prehistory since the mid-20th century. The root of these debates lies primarily in how early prehistorians constructed chronological models, relying heavily upon index fossils. Such models have "artificial boundaries designed to provide structure to a complex record and, rather than being conceived of as permanent or real, should be frequently examined and revised (Corbey and Roebroeks, 2001)" (Monnier, 2006). In this paper, we will not focus our efforts on issues relating to nomenclature and systems of classification. Instead, we will focus on a time frame within which rapid behavioural and technological changes have been documented: the period between MIS 9 to 6. Working on a large scale, and taking account of all of north-western Europe and its southern fringes, a group of researchers working on the main sites from this period propose an assessment of current research on the emergence of the "Middle Palaeolithic". Using a rich corpus of archaeological sites, we discuss how humans occupied north-western Europe and its southern margins between MIS 9 to 6, focusing particularly on questions of taphonomy, conservation, chronology and environment, as well as reviewing the pattern of technological change within lithic assemblages. This overview of current research into the emergence of the Middle Palaeolithic will help to define future research paths and advance our understanding of this key period of human evolution.

Abstract: Neandertals disappeared from Europe just after 40,000 years ago. Some hypotheses ascribe this to numerous population crashes associated with glacial cycles in the late Pleistocene. The goal of this paper is to test the hypothesis that glacial periods stressed Neandertal populations. If cold climates stressed Neandertals, their subsistence behaviors may have changed-requiring intensified use of prey through more extensive nutrient extraction from faunal carcasses. To test this, an analysis of Neandertal butchering was conducted on medium sized bovid/cervid remains composed of predominately red deer (Cervus elaphus), reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), and roe deer (Capreolus caprelous) deposited during global warm and cold phases from two French sites: Pech de l'Aze IV (Pech IV, Bordes' excavation) and Roc de Marsal (RDM). Analysis of surface modification on high survival long bones and proximal and middle phalanges demonstrates that skeletal elements excavated from the cold levels (RDM Level 4, Pech IV Level I2) at each cave have more cut marks and percussion marks than elements from the warm levels (RDM Level 9, Pech IV Level Y-Z) after controlling for fragment size. At both sites, epiphyseal fragments are rare, and although this pattern can result from carnivore consumption, carnivore tooth marks are almost nonexistent (

Abstract: The association of Neandertal occupations with fire has been reported for several European late Middle Paleolithic sites. Renewed excavations at the French site of Roc de Marsal (Dordogne) have exposed a series of well-preserved fire features associated with artifact-rich Neandertal occupations. This paper provides detailed descriptions of the combustion sediments and associated archaeological assemblages, using field observations and laboratory methods, including soil micromorphology, FTIR, and GIS techniques. From an integrity point of view, the available data demonstrate the excellent preservation of the hearths at Roc de Marsal, which display minimal or no post-depositional movement. However, our results suggest that it is often impossible to access the level of contemporaneity between different combustion events, the absence of association between burned objects and the hearths, and that it is often very difficult to distinguish distinct fire events based solely on macroscopic observations. These problems have significant implications for how such features are excavated and analyzed.

Abstract: Pyrotechnology must be seen as one of the most important technological developments in human prehistory. Once developed it eventually came to serve a wide range of applications, but when this actually occurred is not well understood. Fire is well known at a number of Middle Palaeolithic sites in Western Europe, and the Neandertals of this region clearly made use of it at some times and at some sites. Recent excavations at two generally contemporaneous Middle Palaeolithic sites in the Dordogne region of France, Pech de l’Aze IV and Roc de Marsal, have provided significant data on Neandertal use of fire. Both sites have revealed a number of extremely well preserved and delineated fire features at the base of their sequences. The goals of this paper are to describe and contrast the combustion features from these two sites using both field observations and laboratory data that employ micromorphological and FTIR techniques. Pyrotechnological differences can be seen, representing differences in Neandertal fire use and, potentially, site use.

Abstract: 21 pages; Aside from the work of Bonifay (see Bonifay et al. 2007 for one of the more recentpapers) and various articles following these earlier works (e.g., Binant 1991, Defleur 1993, Maureille et Vandermeersch2007, Pettitt 2011, see also May 1986 for a more critical analysis), the in situ position of the remains of Regourdou 1 fromlayer 4 has never actually been discussed on the basis of available data from the salvage operation carried out in October1957 by E. Bonifay and G. Laplace-Jauretche, under the administrative authority of François Bordes, or from thesubsequent, more systematic, excavations directed by E. Bonifay between 1961 and 1964.Via the compilation of available information from a number of unpublished documents (François Bordes’ field notes,drawings made during the salvage operation, photographs taken in 1957, 1961 and 1962, as well as databases from the1961 to 1964 excavations), and also a new inventory of human remains (both previously known and recently discovered),it is now possible to more accurately reconstruct the position of the human remains in a Cartesian system. In this, weassume that the concentration of remains uncovered during the salvage operation was in square G2, according to thepreliminary systematic excavations carried out in 1961. They also bring to light that while practically no anatomicalconnections can be demonstrated with any certainty – and despite significant disruptions (all of the hominin remains arespread over 9 squares : G1 to G3, F1 to F3, E1 and E2, D2) – are mainly positioned in squares G2 and G3 to somedegree with respect to the anatomical logic of the human body. We therefore assume that Regourdou 1 was lying flat,with its head to the west – perhaps upon its trunk – close to the wall of the cavity. This result is different from the fetalposition hypothesis proposed in Bonifay et al. (2007). Moreover many post-depositional (albeit Pleistocene) disturbancesare also evident. We believe that they were likely the result of the utilization and modification of the cavity by brown bearsand lagomorphs.Only new excavations at the site, and a better taphonomic understanding of Bonifay’s (1964) layer 4 (in whichRegourdou 1 was found), and the exact role of humans in its formation, i.e., their anthropic impact on the layer, will allowus to discuss in more detail the nature of the deposition of the body, and, hopefully, the absence of the skull.; Excepté dans les travaux de E. Cesnouveaux documents permettent de supposer que la concentration de vestiges mis au jour lors de l’opération desauvetage se situait dans le carré G2 du carroyage des fouilles débutées en 1961.Ils mettent également en évidence que, même si pratiquement aucune connexion anatomique n’est décelée aveccertitude et malgré des perturbations très importantes (la totalité des ossements se répartit in fine sur près de neufcarrés : G1 à G3, F1 à F3, E1, E2 et D2), ces restes se distribuent surtout en G2 et en G3 en respectant la logiqueanatomique du corps humain. Ces observations permettent de suggérer que Regourdou 1 était plutôt en positionallongée, la tête à l’ouest - peut-être ramenée sur le tronc - à proximité de la paroi de la cavité. Ce résultat est doncdifférent de l’hypothèse de la position foetale proposée dans Bonifay et al. (2007). De plus, de nombreuses perturbationspost-dépositionnelles du dépôt initial humain durant le Pléistocène se sont produites probablement en liaison avec lafréquentation de la cavité par l’Ours brun et les lagomorphes.Nous espérons que de nouvelles fouilles du site, et particulièrement l’étude du rôle de l’Homme dans l’accumulation desvestiges de la couche 4 (selon la stratigraphie de Bonifay 1964), nous permettront de discuter des causes de la présencede ce néandertalien et, peut-être, de l’absence de sa boîte crânienne.

Abstract: A partir du ré-examen de l’industrie du gisement des Tares et d’une expérimentation, une description de la fracturation en split est proposée. Elle se caractérise par une percussion rentrante, sur appui plus ou moins ferme, de direction strictement verticale, avec des percuteurs présentant une touche rectiligne. Following a re-examination of the lithic industry from Les Tares (Dordogne), as well as an experimental study, we propose a description of split fractures. They are produced by vertical (orthogonal) blows from inside the nodule, which is either rested on the ground or handheld. The hammer is characterised by a linear striking surface.

46. The first human occupations in southwestern France: A revised summary twenty years after the Abbeville/Saint Riquier colloquium

Abstract: At the Abbeville/Saint Riquier colloquium, two regional syntheses for southwestern France were proposed. One discussed the northern Aquitaine Basin ( Delpech et al., 1995 ), the other the southern basin of the Garonne and the Pyrenean Piedmont ( Jaubert and Servelle, 1996 ). Since then, research has focused on the classic sequences of Barbas I, La Micoque and Coudoulous I, or on little published sites, such as Lanne-Darre on the Lannemezan plateau ( Colonge, 2005a ; Colonge and Texier, 2005 ). Numerous rescue operations, many still in progress and thus only partially published, have also been conducted in recent years, mainly in geographic zones with diverse pedosedimentary contexts: the Isle Valley (Champ des Debats ( Brenet and Folgado, 1998 ), the Midi Toulousain and the middle Adour Basin (Colonge, Lelouvier, Bertran and collaborators). Several university theses have also fully or partially addressed this region ( Turq, 1992 , Millet, 2001 , Mourre, 2003 ; Jarry and Brenet, in progress). These works concerning the first occupations in this region, up until OIS 9 when Middle Paleolithic industries become fully developed, allow revision of the ancient assemblages and presentation of a general synthesis of these industries.

Abstract: The site of Combe-Grenal is arguably the reference site for the Mousterian of southwest France. Bordes excavated the site over a period of 13 years and generated a large collection of lithics and fauna from a deep series of 64 Lower and Middle Paleolithic levels. Though Bordes only partially published his work at the site, its long stratigraphic sequence and particularly its collections have been subjected to numerous studies over the years and have figured prominently in several long-running debates concerning the Mousterian. Recently, the authors undertook a project to inventory and analyzed these collections along with the documentation of their archaeological context. In so doing, however, a number of serious problems became apparent with the collection in its current state, problems that cannot easily be resolved given the state of the available documentation. These problems have important implications not only for results of studies based on these collections, but more generally, they also point to problems in terms of how archaeological collections are curated.

Abstract: The archaeological site of Les Fieux (Miers, Lot) has been investigated and studied since 1966. In addition to Upper Palaeolithic (namely Aurignacian, Solutrean and Gravettian) and Sauveterrian levels, the site has yielded an important Mousterian sequence that can be correlated with part of the Last Glacial (OIS 3) on the basis of biochronological data. The Mousterian layer K of Les Fieux was explored over more than 25 m2, under the direction of F. Champagne and J. Jaubert. The lithic industry of this layer was first studied by J. Jaubert in 1984 and was related to the Denticulate Mousterian. This industry is studied anew here, including the unpublished material unearthed since then and favouring an approach based on recent advances in lithic technology. The layer K lithic industry was produced using varied raw materials locally available within a radius of about a dozen kilometres around the site. Of the five varieties of identified flint, the Bajocian is the most frequent. The quartz and quarzites group dominates the series. They were picked up as pebbles in the alluvial formations of the Dordogne river and/ or within Tertiary deposits on the plateau. Some pebbles or pebble fragments of various eruptive or metamorphic rocks were also collected. The various raw materials were exploited using several operative schemes : unifacial discoid flaking on quartz without striking platform preparation, aimed at the production of flakes with peripheral sharp cutting edges, unifacial and bifacial discoid flaking with striking platform preparation, aimed at the production of débordant backed flakes and pseudo-Levallois points on flint and quartzite, multidirectional flaking on quartzite, rare Levallois flaking on flint and negligible Kombewalike flake production, also on flint. Small retouched tools are relatively scarce and are dominated by the denticulates and notches group, often made out of fully knapped flakes, or cortical backed or débordant flakes. While the kind of raw materials economy depicted here is a result of the great capacity of the Palaeolithic groups to adapt to local materials, it also shows that they were occasionally able to override the mechanical limits of these materials, for instance by producing quartzite pseudo-Levallois points. The layer K lithic industry is related to the previously defined group 2 of the Denticulate Mousterian. It shares technical features identified in the industries at Mauran, La Borde, and level E of Abri Romani. In the context of the Quercy area’s Middle Palaeolithic, the layer K lithic industry bears witness to the diversity of technical behaviour in a well-defined geographic area., Le site archéologique des Fieux (Miers, Lot) fait l’objet de recherches et d’études depuis 1966. Outre des niveaux attribués au Paléolithique supérieur (Aurignacien, Solutréen, Gravettien) et au Sauveterrien, il a livré une importante séquence moustérienne qui, sur la base de données biochronologiques, peut être corrélée à une partie du Dernier Glaciaire et principalement à la fin de l’OIS 3. La couche K a été explorée sur une surface de plus de 25 m2, sous la direction de F. Champagne et J. Jaubert. L’industrie lithique de cette couche, étudiée par J. Jaubert en 1984 et attribuée au Moustérien à denticulés, fait ici l’objet d’une nouvelle étude globale, incluant le matériel mis au jour après cette date et privilégiant une approche basée sur les acquis récents de la technologie lithique. L’industrie lithique de la couche K est produite aux dépens de matériaux variés, disponibles localement dans un rayon d’une douzaine de kilomètres autour du site. Des cinq variétés de silex identifiées, les silex du Bajocien sont les plus fréquents. La série est dominée par le groupe des quartz et quartzites, prélevés sous forme de galets dans les formations alluviales de la Dordogne et/ ou au sein d’épandages relictuels sur le causse. Quelques galets ou fragments de galets en roches éruptives ou métamorphiques diverses ont également été recueillis. Les différents matériaux ont été exploités selon plusieurs schémas de productions : débitage discoïde unifacial sur quartz sans aménagement des plans de frappe, orienté vers la production d’éclats à tranchants périphériques, débitage discoïde unifacial et bifacial avec un aménagement des plans de frappe, produisant des éclats à dos débordant et des pointes pseudo-Levallois sur silex et quartzite, débitage multidirectionnel sur quartzite, un débitage Levallois assez rare sur silex et un débitage sur face inférieure d’éclat anecdotique, également sur silex. Le petit outillage retouché est relativement peu abondant et dominé par les éclats à retouche courte et le groupe des denticulés et des encoches, souvent réalisés sur des supports de plein débitage ou à dos cortical ou débordant. Si la forme d’économie des matières premières mise en évidence traduit une grande capacité d’adaptation des groupes paléolithiques aux matériaux locaux, elle montre aussi qu’ils ont su à l’occasion aller à l’encontre des propriétés mécaniques de ces matériaux en produisant par exemple des pointes pseudo-Levallois en quartzite. La série de la couche K des Fieux est rapportée au groupe 2 du Moustérien à denticulés et comporte certains éléments techniques reconnus au sein des industries de Mauran, de la Borde et du niveau E de l’abri Romani. Replacée dans le contexte du Paléolithique moyen quercinois, l’industrie lithique de la couche K témoigne de la diversité des comportements techniques au sein d’une aire géographique bien délimitée., Thiébaut Céline, Mourre Vincent, Turq Alain.
