El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar las barreras y facilitadores que los estudiantes con discapacidad manifiestan en Educación Física y en el deporte en Chile, Colombia, España y Perú. Se diseñó un estudio de tipo exploratorio, correlacional y de alcance transversal donde participaron 362 niñas, niños y adolescentes con discapacidad de Chile (41.1 %), Colombia (14.6 %), España (11.6 %) y Perú (32.5 %), a quienes se les aplicó el cuestionario “Barriers and facilitators of sports in children with physical disabilities” (BaFSCH) en su versión traducida al español. Respecto a los resultados, el 72.7 % practica actividad física en la escuela, con una mayor tendencia en Colombia (88.7 % χ² = 11.17, p = .02), donde el 72.0 % lo hace en clase de Educación Física mientras que el 38 %, en talleres de actividad física y deporte. Los principales facilitadores de inclusión son los padres y tutores, junto a sus amistades en el espacio escolar, y las barreras se asocian a algún accidente o caída, y/o su discapacidad y/o deficiencia. A su vez, el sexo biológico (OR = 1.893, IC = 1.19-3.00, p = .007) se asocia a un facilitador para la práctica de la actividad física, mientras que ser estudiante con discapacidad intelectual (OR = .437, IC = .20 – .94, p = .03) y discapacidad física (OR = .298, IC = .15-.58, p = .0002) se asocia a una barrera para la inclusión. Con esta investigación se reveló que la clase de Educación Física es fundamental en la práctica de la actividad física en el espacio educativo para niñas, niños y adolescentes con discapacidad, al igual que el entorno, que se transforma en factor protector a nivel ambiental.

Breast cancer is a multifaceted disease and a leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality in females across the globe. In 2020 alone, 2.3 million women were diagnosed and 685,000 died of breast cancer worldwide. With the number of diagnoses projected to increase to 3 million per year by 2040 it is essential that new methods of detection and disease stratification are sought to decrease this global cancer burden.Although significant improvements have been made in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, the prognosis of breast cancer remains poor in some patient groups (i.e. triple negative breast cancer), necessitating research into better patient stratification, diagnosis and drug discovery. The UK Biobank, a comprehensive biomedical and epidemiological database with a wide variety of multiomics data (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics) offers huge potential to uncover groundbreaking discoveries in breast cancer research leading to improved patient stratification. Combining genomic, proteomic, and metabolic profiles of breast cancer in combination with histological classification, can aid treatment decisions through accurate diagnosis and prognosis prediction of tumor behaviour.Here, we systematically reviewed PubMed publications reporting the analysis of UK Biobank data in breast cancer research. Our analysis of UK Biobank studies in the past five years identified 125 publications, of which 76 focussed on genomic data analysis. Interestingly, only two studies reported the analysis of metabolomics and proteomics data, with none performing multiomics analysis of breast cancer. A meta-analysis of the 76 publications identified 2870 genetic variants associated with breast cancer across 445 genes. Subtype analysis revealed differential genetic alteration in 13 of the 445 genes and the identification of 59 well-established breast cancer genes. in differential pathways. Pathway interaction analyses illuminated their involvement in general cancer biomolecular pathways (e.g. DNA damage repair, Gene expression). While our meta-analysis only measured genetic differences in breast cancer due to current usage of UK Biobank data, minimal multi-omics analyses have been performed and the potential for harnessing multi-omics strategies within the UK Biobank cohort holds promise for unravelling the biological signatures of distinct breast cancer subtypes further in the future.

This research, portion of monographic work presented in 2022, aims to discuss the relationship between religion and the constitution of a specific social functionality. Religious knowledge, essential for the social organization of different subjects over time, is sometimes devalued in contrast to other forms of knowledge, however, such research seeks to foster theoretical arguments for a discussion about religious themes and the ontological foundation of the world , the construction of representative modelsand a sacred orientation for everyday life. Throughout the text, a historiographic survey will follow in search of an adequate theoretical conceptualization with regard to the religious phenomenon and its social and historical aspect, in addition to a brief presentation of the relevance of the religious phenomenon throughout history and its subsequent contestation by other areas of knowledge

Abstract Background The quality of cotton fiber determines its value in the textile market, influencing agricultural profitability and the efficiency of textile processing. The selection of genotypes with superior fibers is a key factor for genetic improvement programs seeking adaptability and sustainability in the face of climate change. This demonstrates the strategic importance of this plant for sustainable agriculture and the global textile industry. The objective of this research was to decipher the fiber quality of Gossypium barbadense var. brasiliensis in the native Amazonian communities of La Convención, Cusco-Perú, and to evaluate other critical aspects of native cotton that have not yet been identified. The methodology included non-probability sampling for accessibility, qualitative and quantitative analyses, and multivariate analyses. The fiber length (mm), micronaire index (maturity/fineness), fiber strength (gf/tex), length uniformity index (%), fiber elongation (%), maturation index (%), and short fiber index (%) were the fiber characteristics evaluated using the HVI method in cotton genotypes. Results Cotton accessions collected from Koribeni (Gossypium spp.) and Shivankoreni (Gossypium barbadense var. brasiliensis) stood out for their fiber quality properties, especially length, strength, and uniformity, which highlights their relevance for advanced textile applications and potential for use in plant genetic improvement programs. Conclusion These findings reinforce the need to conserve and study these native cotton accessions from the Peruvian Amazon region, which can offer promising perspectives for the textile industry and agricultural biodiversity.

In rural-urban interface areas exposed to wildfires, it is essential that territorial planning be adapted to integrate risk reduction measures. However, few studies have examined the historical interactions between wildfire management and territorial planning, and how their institutions and instruments have adapted to increase their integrated over time. Accordingly, the aim of this research is to examine the evolution of the Chilean territorial planning system in its incorporation of wildfire risk management measures. A qualitative case study analysis strategy is used. A chronology of Chilean territorial planning and its integration of wildfires characterized in five periods is presented. Progressive efforts to improve the way in which territorial planning addresses wildfires are evidenced, however, characteristics of the historical context condition and limit its ability to do so. This research contributes to the understanding of the Chilean planning system and its relationship with wildfires, contributing to the international discussion on the factors that condition the integration of disaster risk reduction policies in various contexts.

Abstract Sickle cell disease is a devastating blood disorder that originates from a single point mutation in the HBB gene coding for hemoglobin. Here, we develop a GMP-compatible TALEN-mediated gene editing process enabling efficient HBB correction via a DNA repair template while minimizing risks associated with HBB inactivation. Comparing viral versus non-viral DNA repair template delivery in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in vitro, both strategies achieve comparable HBB correction and result in over 50% expression of normal adult hemoglobin in red blood cells without inducing β-thalassemic phenotype. In an immunodeficient female mouse model, transplanted cells edited with the non-viral strategy exhibit higher engraftment and gene correction levels compared to those edited with the viral strategy. Transcriptomic analysis reveals that non-viral DNA repair template delivery mitigates P53-mediated toxicity and preserves high levels of long-term hematopoietic stem cells. This work paves the way for TALEN-based autologous gene therapy for sickle cell disease.

The Messinian-Zanclean boundary in the Mediterranean basin marks the end of the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC) at approximately 5.33 Ma. The mechanism behind the return to normal marine conditions after the MSC are debated, with two main hypotheses proposed: an instantaneous reflooding of the Mediterranean at the base of the Zanclean, following its near-complete desiccation, or a gradual sea level rise in a non-desiccated basin during the late MSC phase (Lago-Mare). Our objectives are to refine the age model of the Pollenzo section in the Piedmont basin, Italy, and to elucidate environmental variability during this phase. We employ high-resolution biomagnetostratigraphic and cyclostratigraphic analyses, integrated with statistical multivariate and cluster analyses, and tie the results with other Italian Mediterranean reference sections of the basal Zanclean. The proposed age model is based on biostratigraphic markers (planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils), alongside the identification of the base of the Thvera subchron. Although no astrochronological tuning was proposed, the influence of orbital parameters variation on calcareous plankton was noted, especially at tie of eccentricity maxima. Our results indicate a gradual restoration of open marine conditions after the MSC, spanning from 5.33 to 5.23 Ma. We observe a transition from a more marginal environment to more open marine conditions at the termination of MSC. Our findings challenge the notion of an abrupt transition at the end of the MSC, emphasizing the gradual nature of environmental change in the northernmost Mediterranean basin, from the late Messinian to the early Zanclean.

Abstract In this work, the passivation and localized corrosion of selective laser melted (SLM) stainless steel 316 L when exposed to high pressures of CO2 with the presence of H2S and Cl− at 25 °C and 125 °C were studied. Depletion of Cr/Mo was observed at the cell interiors and melt-pool boundaries (MPBs) compared to the cell boundaries. Volta potential differences obtained from scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) showed that the MPBs were 8–20 mV lower than the matrix, while the cell interiors were 20–50 mV lower than the cell boundaries. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Mott–Schottky tests indicated a more defective passive film at 125 °C, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the formation of a less protective film with an increased S/O ratio at 125 °C than 25 °C. Initiation of localized corrosion was observed at the MPBs and pits formed after a week of immersion were wider by an order of magnitude at 125 °C than 25 °C, with evidence of cell-interior dissolution. While passivity was observed even at elevated temperatures, local chemical heterogeneities compromised the stability of the film and contributed to localized corrosion in SLM SS316L.

Television broadcasts around the world employ specific hashtags to facilitate viewer engagement via social media with program hosts. In the context of news broadcasts, individuals' comments mix with the articles shown on television news, mainly in relation to urban situations. These social media posts constitute a significant database, as users assume roles similar to those of citizens. The aim of this paper is to scrutinize the posts associated with the hashtags #VcNoJL1 and #VcNoJL2, publishe on the Twitter (X) platform, in the context of the TV news program TV Liberal, broadcast in the State of Pará (Brazil), using the CRISP-DM methodology and data science techniques. Using a statistical examination of these publications, a discreet level of engagement was observed among viewers, who are also users of the aforementioned social media platform. Furthermore, a sentiment assessment of the posts was carried out, revealing that 54% of the comments are negative, 31% are positive and 15% are neutral. The negative comments notably highlight the challenges within municipal public administration, while the positive comments are around commemorative occasions such as Mother's Day and Grandparents' Day. This type of analysis constitutes an important monitoring tool not only for the television program, but also for public administration.

Abstract The fiber quality of cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) native to the Peruvian Amazon region is one of the most versatile and essential natural fibers in the Peruvian textile industry. There is little information about the fiber quality traits of cotton genotypes native to the Peruvian Amazon region. This study investigated the fiber quality traits of Peruvian Pima cotton accessions native to the Amazon region of the La Convención Province, Cusco, Peru, to determine the lines with the greatest potential for improving fiber quality in cotton genetic breeding programs. A total of 14 cotton accessions with white fiber color, being 12 accessions of G. barbadense L. (Pima cotton) and two accessions of Gossypium sp. (unknown cotton), were analyzed. The fiber properties determined using the high volume instrument method included seven characteristics. All fiber properties were classified into five quality classes. The data on fiber quality properties were subjected to distribution, correlation, and canonical variable analysis. The results of fiber quality properties showed that the two accessions of Gossypium sp. (unknown cotton) can be promising options to be used as high‐quality fiber progenies in crop genetic breeding programs or can be cultivated by regional farmers for the purpose of producing cotton with high fiber quality. Future investigations could utilize other methods of fiber quality analysis and compare the fiber quality of these cotton accessions native to the Peruvian Amazon region with other cotton species grown worldwide to improve the understanding of Pima cotton fiber quality and its applicability in different contexts of the textile industries.

El presente artículo discute los avances y desafíos de las tecnologías de monitorización en salud de personas mayores y sus implicaciones en la privacidad y confidencialidad de los datos recolectados. Se trata de un estudio exploratorio, fundamentado en la literatura, con síntesis narrativa. El texto contextualiza las demandas derivadas del envejecimiento poblacional y el uso de sensores y otros dispositivos electrónicos en la monitorización de actividades diarias de personas mayores en ambientes internos y externos. Es importante resaltar que los beneficios ofrecidos por las tecnologías no deben comprometer la privacidad y confidencialidad de los datos. Para garantizar esto, es necesario mejorar los mecanismos reguladores, estableciendo estándares de seguridad y principios éticos para la protección de datos personales, respetando la privacidad y confidencialidad de los datos.

Abstract The use of hydrogels helpsthe production of plants in drought-stress environments. Thus, this work evaluated using different hydrogels to minimize drought stress in soybean cultivation. The treatments employed two different hydrogels, one already commercialized and the other produced with cashew gum (Anacardium occidentale), five levels (0, 30, 60, 120, and 240 mg pot−1) of the hydrogels, and two levels of drought stress in sandy soil. The growth and yield of soybeans and the levels of macro- and micronutrients in soybeans were evaluated.growth. The use of CG hydrogel promoted 12% increase in protein content in the seeds in the when soybean plants were subjected to drought stress. The levels of 30 mg pot-1, corresponding to 7.5 kg ha−1, improved the ’morphological and productive parametersof the soybeans. The increasing levels of hydrogel promoted the increase in P, K, Ca, Mg, and Fe and reduced S and Cu on an exponential scale. The use of cashew gum hydrogel increased the K and Ca contents in soybean seeds compared to commercial hydrogel.

Objective: We performed a post hoc analysis of the Evaluation of XIENCE versus Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery for Effectiveness of Left Main Revascularization (EXCEL) trial to determine the effect an on-versus off-pump strategy had on outcomes when compared with percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods: All randomized patients in EXCEL (n = 1905) were included. The outcomes of interest were the primary end point composite of death from any cause, stroke, or myocardial infarction; the composite study end point or ischemia-driven revascularization; and the rate of death from any cause at 5 years. Event rates were based on Kaplan–Meier estimates in time-to-first-event analyses. Results: Propensity matching resulted in groups of 1142 patients (571 each) for on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting versus percutaneous coronary intervention and 472 patients (236 each) for off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting versus percutaneous coronary intervention. In the on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting versus percutaneous coronary intervention matched groups, the composite end point was similar (18.0% vs 22.1%, P = .19) and the composite end point or ischemia-driven revascularization (23.3% vs 31.0%, P = .01) was lower, and mortality (7.6% vs 11.8%, P = .025) was lower in the on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting group at 5 years. In the off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting versus percutaneous coronary intervention matched groups, the composite end point (19.4% vs 22.2%, P = .47), composite end point or ischemia-driven revascularization (25.9% vs 34.2%, P = .07), and mortality (12.5% vs 14.2%, P = .59) were similar at 5 years. Conclusions: In the EXCEL trial, on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting was associated with a decreased 5-year rate of the composite outcome of death, stroke, myocardial infarction, or ischemia-driven revascularization, and decreased mortality when compared with percutaneous coronary intervention, whereas outcomes of off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting were similar to percutaneous coronary intervention.

Abstract Silicon (Si) fertilization is widely recognized to improve the development of crops, especially in tropical soils and cultivation under dryland management. Herein, our working hypothesis was that Si stoichiometry favors the efficient use of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in sugarcane plants. Therefore, a field experiment was carried out using a 3 × 3 factorial scheme consisting of three cultivars (RB92579, RB021754 and RB036066) and three forms of Si application (control without Si; sodium silicate spray at 40 mmol L−1 in soil during planting; sodium silicate spray at 40 mmol L−1 on leaves at 75 days after emergence). All Si fertilizations altered the elemental C and P stoichiometry and sugarcane yield, but silicon-induced responses varied depending on sugarcane cultivar and application method. The most prominent impacts were found in the leaf Si-sprayed RB92579 cultivar, with a significant increase of 7.0% (11 Mg ha−1) in stalk yield, 9.0% (12 Mg ha−1) in total recoverable sugar, and 20% (4 Mg ha−1) in sugar yield compared to the Si-without control. In conclusion, our findings clearly show that silicon soil and foliar fertilization alter C:N:P stoichiometry by enhancing the efficiency of carbon and phosphorus utilization, leading to improved sugarcane production and industrial quality.

Abstract Purpose To address the care needs of older adults, it is important to identify and understand the forms of care support older adults received. This systematic review aims to examine the social networks of older adults receiving informal or formal care and the factors that influenced their networks. Methods A systematic review was conducted by searching six databases from inception to January 31, 2023. The review included primary studies focusing on older adults receiving long-term care, encompassing both informal and formal care. To assess the risk of bias in the included studies, validated appraisal tools specifically designed for different study types were utilized. Network analysis was employed to identify the grouping of study concepts, which subsequently formed the foundation for describing themes through narrative synthesis. Results We identified 121 studies relating to the formal and informal care of older adults’ networks. A variety of social ties were examined by included studies. The most commonly examined sources of care support were family members (such as children and spouses) and friends. Several factors were consistently reported to influence the provision of informal care, including the intensity of networks, reciprocity, and geographical proximity. In terms of formal care utilization, older age and poor health status were found to be associated with increased use of healthcare services. Additionally, physical limitations and cognitive impairment were identified as factors contributing to decreased social engagement. Conclusion This review found that older people were embedded within a diverse network. The findings of this review emphasize the importance of recognizing and incorporating the diversity of social networks in care plans and policies to enhance the effectiveness of interventions and improve the overall well-being of older adults.

Abstract Background Measurement of multimorbidity in research is variable, including the choice of the data source used to ascertain conditions. We compared the estimated prevalence of multimorbidity and associations with mortality using different data sources. Methods A cross-sectional study of SAIL Databank data including 2,340,027 individuals of all ages living in Wales on 01 January 2019. Comparison of prevalence of multimorbidity and constituent 47 conditions using data from primary care (PC), hospital inpatient (HI), and linked PC-HI data sources and examination of associations between condition count and 12-month mortality. Results Using linked PC-HI compared with only HI data, multimorbidity was more prevalent (32.2% versus 16.5%), and the population of people identified as having multimorbidity was younger (mean age 62.5 versus 66.8 years) and included more women (54.2% versus 52.6%). Individuals with multimorbidity in both PC and HI data had stronger associations with mortality than those with multimorbidity only in HI data (adjusted odds ratio 8.34 [95% CI 8.02-8.68] versus 6.95 (95%CI 6.79-7.12] in people with ≥ 4 conditions). The prevalence of conditions identified using only PC versus only HI data was significantly higher for 37/47 and significantly lower for 10/47: the highest PC/HI ratio was for depression (14.2 [95% CI 14.1–14.4]) and the lowest for aneurysm (0.51 [95% CI 0.5–0.5]). Abstract During the olfactory perception process, our olfactory receptors are thought to recognize specific chemical features. These features may contribute towards explaining our crossmodal perception. The physicochemical features of odors can be extracted using an array of gas sensors, also known as an electronic nose. The present study investigates the role that the physicochemical features of olfactory stimuli play in explaining the nature and origin of olfactory crossmodal correspondences, which is a consistently overlooked aspect of prior work. Here, we answer the question of whether the physicochemical features of odors contribute towards explaining olfactory crossmodal correspondences and by how much. We found a similarity of 49% between the perceptual and the physicochemical spaces of our odors. All of our explored crossmodal correspondences namely, the angularity of shapes, smoothness of textures, perceived pleasantness, pitch, and colors have significant predictors for various physicochemical features, including aspects of intensity and odor quality. While it is generally recognized that olfactory perception is strongly shaped by context, experience, and learning, our findings show that a link, albeit small (6–23%), exists between olfactory crossmodal correspondences and their underlying physicochemical features.

Purpose. The aim of the study is to describe the genotype and phenotype of a Mexican cohort with PCARE-related retinal disease. Methods. The study included 14 patients from 11 unrelated pedigrees with retinal dystrophies who were demonstrated to carry biallelic pathogenic variants in PCARE. Visual assessment methods included best corrected visual acuity, color fundus photography, Goldmann visual field test, kinetic perimetry, dark/light adapted chromatic perimetry, full-field electroretinography, autofluorescence imaging, and spectral domain-optical coherence tomography imaging. Genetic screening was performed either by gene panel sequencing or by exome sequencing. Results. According to the results of multimodal imaging and functional tests, all 14 patients were diagnosed with cone-rod dystrophy. Six different PCARE pathogenic alleles were identified in our cohort, including three novel mutations: c.3048_3049del (p.Tyr1016∗), c.3314_3315del (p.Ser1105∗), and c.551A > G (p.His184Arg). Notably, alleles p.His184Arg, p.Arg613∗, and p.Arg984∗ were present in 18 of the 22 (82%) PCARE alleles from probands in our cohort. Conclusion. Our work expands the PCARE mutational profile by identifying three novel pathogenic variants causing retinal dystrophy. While phenotypic variations occurred among patients, a cone-rod dystrophy pattern was observed in all affected individuals.

Objective When considering proposals to improve diets, it is important to understand how factors like price and income can affect saturated fat (SF) intake and demand. In this study, we examine and estimate the influence of price and income on intake across 160 countries, by age and sex, and derive sensitivity measures (price elasticities) that vary by age, sex and world region.Design We econometrically estimate intake responsiveness to income and prices across countries, accounting for differences by world region, age and sex. Intake data by age, sex and country were obtained from the 2018 Global Dietary Database. These data were then linked to global price data for select food groups from the World Bank International Comparison Programme and income data from the World Development Indicators Databank (World Bank).Results Intake differences due to price were highly significant, with a 1% increase in price associated with a lower SF intake (% energy/d) of about 4.3 percentage points. We also find significant differences across regions. In high-income countries, median (age 40) intake reductions were 1.4, 0.8 and 0.2 percentage points, given a 1% increase in the price of meat, dairy, and oils and fats, respectively. Price elasticities varied with age but not sex. Intake differences due to income were insignificant when regional binary variables were included in the analysis.Conclusion The results of this study show heterogeneous associations among prices and intake within and across countries. Policymakers should consider these heterogeneous effects as they address global nutrition and health challenges.

BackgroundFrailty is characterised by a reduced resilience to adversity. In this analysis we examined changes in frailty in people aged 50+ before and during a period of austere public spending in England.MethodsData from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing 2002-2018 were analysed. Associations between austerity and frailty were examined using (1) Multilevel interrupted times series analysis (ITSA); and (2) Accelerated longitudinal modelling comparing frailty trajectories in people of the same age in 2002 and 2012.ResultsThe analysis included 16,410 people (mean age 67 years, 55% women), with mean frailty index score of 0.16. Mean scores in women (0.16) where higher than in men (mean 0.14), and higher in the poorest tertile (mean 0.20) than the richest (mean 0.12). In the ITSA, frailty index scores increased more quickly during austerity than before, with the additional increase in frailty 2012-2018 being similar in magnitude to the difference in mean frailty score between people aged 65-69 and 70-74 years. Steeper increases in frailty after 2012 were experienced across the wealth-spectrum and in both sexes but were greater in the very oldest (80+). In the accelerated longitudinal analysis, frailty was lower in 2012 than 2002, but increased more rapidly in the 2012 cohort compared to the 2002 cohort; markedly so in people aged 80+.ConclusionThe period of austerity politics was associated with steeper increases in frailty with age compared to the pre-austerity period, consistent with previously observed increases in mortality.

ObjectiveDepressive symptoms can be assessed with self-reported questionnaires, such as the Patient Health Questionary-9 (PHQ-9). Previous studies have suggested that the PHQ-9 items can be grouped into somatic and non-somatic clusters. However, the classification of the PHQ-9 item “concentration difficulties” into somatic or non-somatic is still controversial. This controversy may be explained by difficulties experienced by subjects in accurately evaluating their attention problems. The primary objective of this study was to determine the correlation between objective attentional performance and the two clusters of depressive symptoms in hospital employees working in stressful conditions.MethodsThe participants filled out the PHQ-9 to identify their depressive symptoms. Based on the PHQ-9, the somatic or non-somatic symptoms were measured without considering the question about subjective concentration difficulties. Then, a brief version of the Continuous Visual Attention Test (CVAT) was applied to assess four attentional subdomains. The CVAT is a Go/No-go task that measures number of correct responses (focused attention), number of incorrect responses (behavior-inhibition), average reaction time of correct responses (RT-alertness), and variability of reaction time (VRT-sustained attention). The entire task lasted 90 s. Correlation analyses assessed the relationships between attentional performance and the two dimensions of depressive symptoms.ResultsAfter applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, 359 individuals were selected. Their age ranged from 20 to 70 years (mean = 40.5, SD = 10.37), and the majority was female (67.6%). A predominance in somatic depressive symptoms was present in 231 (64%) participants, whereas 59 (16%) showed a predominance of non-somatic symptoms. Sixty-nine participants (20%) did not show any predominance. Higher somatic scores were associated with higher RTs, whereas higher non-somatic scores were related to an increase in the number of incorrect responses.ConclusionThe predominance of the somatic cluster was related to lower alertness, whereas the predominance of non-somatic cluster was associated with impulsivity/hyperactivity. This result may explain the difficulties associated with correctly classifying the item concentration difficulties. A brief attentional task can be used as an auxiliary tool to correctly identify the different dimensions of attention that are associated with different clusters of depressive symptoms.

β-carotene (βC) is a liposoluble natural pigment important for human health due to their antioxidant and provitamin A activities but presents high chemistry instabilities which increases their oxidation in the presence of light, oxygen, high temperatures and low pHs. This research aimed to microencapsulate βC by complex coacervation of ovalbumin (OVA) and sodium alginate (NaAlg). The microencapsulation technique was employed at pH=4.0 and 8:1 OVA/NaAlg (w/w) ratio, after confirming their affinity with zeta potential, state diagram, turbidity, and isothermal trituration calorimetry analyses. The obtained microcapsules presented spherical morphology with well-defined core and high encapsulation efficiency (97.90%). The presence of OVA, NaAlg and βC in microcapsules was confirmed by the Fourier transformed infrared analyses. The in vitro simulation of the gastrointestinal digestion of the microcapsules revealed that 71.39% of microencapsulated βC was released in the intestines with 32.78% of bioaccessibility. The release kinetics of encapsulated βC demonstrated that the βC release mechanism occurs by Fickian diffusion. The addition of βC microcapsules in cookies improved by 2-fold the antioxidant activities compared to free βC microcapsules cookies. These results suggest that βC microcapsules formed by complex coacervation of OVA/NaAlg can be added efficiently in the fortification of cookies.

This work evaluated the hydrodynamic properties of heparin hydrolysed at temperatures ranging from 40 °C to 80 °C in buffered acid and alkaline environments. The correlation between hydrodynamic parameters led to the conclusion that polymer conformational changes appeared to be minimal until chain depolymerisation, initiated at pH 1 and 80 °C. However, the synergy of conformational changes, even if minimal, and sulphate loss observed at pH 1, pH 3 and pH 12 (various temperatures) resulted in a loss of the antifactor Xa activity. Therefore, the ‘contribution’ of conformational changes should be added to the generally recognized effect of desulphation towards the activity of heparin. This is of significance as the processing of medical heparin is complex, and requires adjustment of several physical and chemical factors, including pH and temperature.

Abstract Introduction Humans use discriminative touch to perceive texture through dynamic interactions with surfaces, activating low‐threshold mechanoreceptors in the skin. It was largely assumed that texture was processed in primary somatosensory regions in the brain; however, imaging studies indicate heterogeneous patterns of brain activity associated with texture processing. Methods To address this, we conducted a coordinate‐based activation likelihood estimation meta‐analysis of 13 functional magnetic resonance imaging studies (comprising 15 experiments contributing 228 participants and 275 foci) selected by a systematic review. Results Concordant activations for texture perception occurred in the left primary somatosensory and motor regions, with bilateral activations in the secondary somatosensory, posterior insula, and premotor and supplementary motor cortices. We also evaluated differences between studies that compared touch processing to non‐haptic control (e.g., rest or visual control) or those that used haptic control (e.g., shape or orientation perception) to specifically investigate texture encoding. Studies employing a haptic control revealed concordance for texture processing only in the left secondary somatosensory cortex. Contrast analyses demonstrated greater concordance of activations in the left primary somatosensory regions and inferior parietal cortex for studies with a non‐haptic control, compared to experiments accounting for other haptic aspects. Conclusion These findings suggest that texture processing may recruit higher order integrative structures, and the secondary somatosensory cortex may play a key role in encoding textural properties. The present study provides unique insight into the neural correlates of texture‐related processing by assessing the influence of non‐textural haptic elements and identifies opportunities for a future research design to understand the neural processing of texture.

ABSTRACT Harvest delay can alter the physiological and sanitary quality of sorghum seeds due to the longer exposure time of seeds to adverse environmental conditions in the field. In this study, we investigated the impact of delayed Sorghum sp. harvest on the physiological and sanitary quality of seeds in four hybrids grown in the tropical soil of the Brazilian Cerrado region. Plants from four Sorghum sp. hybrids (IPA SUDAN 4202, BRS 658, BRS 810, and BRS 373) were grown and submitted to four seed harvest periods (0, 7, 14, and 21 days after stage 9 - seed physiological maturity). The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design in a 4 × 4 factorial, with four replicates. At each harvest period, the thousand-seed weight, water content, first count of the germination test, germination, seedling emergence, emergence speed index, seedling dry matter, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, and sanitary quality of seeds were determined. Seeds of higher physiological and sanitary quality of the IPA SUDAN 4202 and BRS 658 sorghum hybrids can be obtained when the harvest is carried out up to 7 days after the physiological maturity stage. However, the delay in seed harvesting at 14 and 21 days after physiological maturity results in a higher incidence of Colletotrichum sp., Curvularia sp., Rhizoctonia sp., and Alternaria sp. on the seeds of these hybrids. Delaying the harvest of sorghum seeds from 7 days after the physiological maturity stage compromises seed vigor and viability and increases the incidence of pathogens.

ABSTRACT Stress caused by defoliation can compromise the physiological quality of soybean seeds. However, there is evidence that the application of nitrogen (N) can be an alternative to reduce the qualitative losses in seeds caused by defoliating insects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of topdressing N fertilization in improving the physiological quality of soybean seeds from plants subjected to artificial defoliation. The experimental design was a randomized block arranged in a 2×4 factorial scheme with four replicates. The treatments consisted of two levels of defoliation (33 and 66%) and four doses of N (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha-1), using urea (45% N), applied two days after defoliation. Artificial defoliation was performed during the R3 stage by removing one (33%) and two leaflets (66%) from each trifoliate leaf under field conditions. At stage R5.1, leaf area was quantified, and after harvesting, germination, emergence, length, total dry mass, electrical conductivity, total protein content, mass of 1000 seeds, and tetrazolium (vigor and viability) tests were carried out. It was concluded that increasing the defoliation from 33 to 66% impaired the physiological quality of soybean seeds. The use of nitrogen fertilization for coverage after defoliation at the beginning of the reproductive phase cannot minimize qualitative losses in seeds.

Our brain constantly combines multisensory information from our surrounding environment. Odors for instance are often perceived with visual cues; these sensations interact to form our own subjective experience. This integration process can have a profound impact on the resulting experience and can alter our subjective reality. Crossmodal correspondences are the consistent associations between stimulus features in different sensory modalities. These correspondences are presumed to be bidirectional in nature and have been shown to influence our perception in a variety of different sensory modalities. Vision is dominant in our multisensory perception and can influence how we perceive information in our other senses, including olfaction. We explored the effect that different odors have on human color perception by presenting olfactory stimuli while asking observers to adjust a color patch to be devoid of hue (neutral gray task). We found a shift in the perceived neutral gray point to be biased toward warmer colors. Four out of five of our odors also trend toward their expected crossmodal correspondences. For instance, when asking observers to perform the neutral gray task while presenting the smell of cherry, the perceptually achromatic stimulus was biased toward a red-brown. Using an achromatic adjustment task, we were able to demonstrate a small but systematic effect of the presence of odors on human color perception.

The different conditions of soil vegetation cover combined with irrigation management and/or agricultural production systems can influence soil moisture content and crop yields. This study investigated the impact of agricultural production systems and center pivot irrigation management on soil moisture content during the cultivation of soybean and off-season corn crops. Two field experiments were conducted during the 2018–2019 growing season in tropical Cerrado soil conditions; one experiment consisted of the application of three irrigation water depths (0%, 50%, and 100% of the crop evapotranspiration) during soybean cultivation in a no-tillage system under ruzigrass (Urochloa ruziziensis) straw, and the second experiment consisted of the intercropped or nonintercropped cultivation of corn hybrids with ruzigrass in an agricultural area with and without the influence of eucalyptus reforestation. The volumetric soil moisture was measured using an electronic soil moisture meter (Hidrofarm), and the 1000-grain mass and yield of the soybean and corn were measured in the two trials. Irrigation and the no-till system did not influence soybean yields. The soybean cultivars NA 5909 RG and TMG 7067 IPRO presented TGM above 180 g, and this represented on average a 22% higher TGM than the BMX DESAFIO RR and CD 2737 RR. The presence of eucalyptus forest promoted a 1.5% increase in soil moisture in the corn crop. Soil management systems, such as irrigation, use cover crops, which may not increase the productivity of soybean and corn crops as expected.

Introdução: Oriundo de Wuhan (China), o Coronavírus se propagou a partir do final de 2019. A Pneumonia oriundo do vírus provoca descamação de pneumocitos e inflamação intersticial. Devido sua rápida propagação e forma como atua no organismo, medidas restritivas e emergenciais foram tomadas. O fechamento de academias provocou novas adaptações para treinos durante a pandemia. Objetivo: Analisar os impactos causados a prática de exercício físico durante a pandemia do Coronavírus-2019, em praticantes de musculação, da cidade de Montes Claros-MG. Materiais e Métodos: Trata-se de uma pesquisa de caráter qualitativo, conduzido com 7 indivíduos, de ambos os sexos, idade de 18 a 60 anos. Os entrevistados foram contatados inicialmente por seu Personal Trainer, que foram autorizados a repassar o contato para participação na pesquisa. Os entrevistados por tanto, para participarem da pesquisa deveriam se enquadrar nos requisitos, no qual apresenta como fundamental o acompanhamento do Personal Trainer. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa. Resultados: A busca por práticas de exercício físico se deu com o intuito de proporcionar uma melhor qualidade de vida aos praticantes, os quais se adaptaram da melhor forma que puderam, adaptando os materiais necessários para realização de treinos em casa com acompanhamento presencial do Personal Training, ou de forma remota. Conclusão: Conclui-se que durante o período pandêmico da Covid-19 os praticantes sentiram a necessidade de manter a prática de exercício físico, ou retomarem a prática, pela necessidade de melhorar a saúde mental e física, influenciando positivamente a qualidade de vida e fortalecimento do sistema imunológico.

IntroductionTexture changes occur frequently during real-world haptic explorations, but the neural processes that encode perceptual texture change remain relatively unknown. The present study examines cortical oscillatory changes during transitions between different surface textures during active touch.MethodsParticipants explored two differing textures whilst oscillatory brain activity and finger position data were recorded using 129-channel electroencephalography and a purpose-built touch sensor. These data streams were fused to calculate epochs relative to the time when the moving finger crossed the textural boundary on a 3D-printed sample. Changes in oscillatory band power in alpha (8–12 Hz), beta (16–24 Hz) and theta (4–7 Hz) frequency bands were investigated.ResultsAlpha-band power reduced over bilateral sensorimotor areas during the transition period relative to ongoing texture processing, indicating that alpha-band activity is modulated by perceptual texture change during complex ongoing tactile exploration. Further, reduced beta-band power was observed in central sensorimotor areas when participants transitioned from rough to smooth relative to transitioning from smooth to rough textures, supporting previous research that beta-band activity is mediated by high-frequency vibrotactile cues.DiscussionThe present findings suggest that perceptual texture change is encoded in the brain in alpha-band oscillatory activity whilst completing continuous naturalistic movements across textures.

Background: Surface coating technology can assist fixed appliances by reducing friction, improving antibacterial characteristics, and increasing corrosion resistance. The application of functional coatings composed of graphene onto the surfaces of orthodontic brackets and archwires has been shown to enhance their mechanical qualities. The objective of the current study was to carry out a scoping analysis of published recent evidence on the utilization of graphene as a covering material in metallic orthodontic accessories, such as brackets and archwires; Methods: A scoping review was undertaken following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Dentistry and Oral Science Source, and Google Scholar were searched between 2003 and 2023; Results: In total, 38 potential references were detected, from which 10 were selected for this review. These articles addressed the benefits of the application of graphene-oxide functional coatings onto the surface of archwires and brackets during fixed orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic graphene-oxide-based coatings provide improved surface characteristics (e.g., reduced friction and anticorrosive effects), antibacterial capabilities, and biocompatibility. These characteristics can increase the effectiveness of orthodontic therapy, improve patient comfort, and lower the likelihood of problems; Conclusion: Orthodontists should be aware of and comprehend the prerequisites for using graphene-oxide-coated archwires and brackets to fulfill needs throughout their clinical practice.

Abstract Background: Domestic cats have been implicated as accidental hosts of Leishmania sp. However, in recent years, the recurrent description of new cases in endemic and nonendemic areas draw attention to the potential epidemiological role of cats as reservoir hosts. Although dogs are considered urban reservoirs, cats could act as a secondary natural reservoirs in these areas. Thus, feline leishmaniasis has become an emerging disease in several countries worldwide. Case presentation: This study aimed to describe the first case of feline leishmaniasis in a stray animal that presented lesions compatible with the disease in Belém, Pará, Brazil, an important urban area in eastern Amazon. Serological tests for Leishmania infantum (ELISA and IFA) were nonreactive, whereas histopathological examination indicated infectious dermatitis caused by Leishmania spp. or Toxoplasma gondii. Cytopathological study of lesion aspirate confirmed the presence of Leishmania sp. amastigotes within macrophages. Finally, molecular analyses revealed that the feline infection was caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi. Conclusion: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study reports the first case of natural infection by Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi in a feline from eastern Amazon. These findings suggest domestic cats as potential secondary reservoir hosts of Leishmania spp. in Belém, which reinforces the importance of further epidemiological investigation of feline leishmaniasis, especially in urban areas with human cases.

Abstract The objectives of this work were to evaluate the efficiency of visual selection in soybean under a protected environment, to determine if the ability of an evaluator to select visually depends on their experience with the crop, and to study the efficiency of visual selection of traits associated with productivity to obtain income gains. For that, three soybean populations (F3, F4, and F5) were used, composed of 20 families each, conducted in a greenhouse in a randomized block design, with three replicates and experimental units, two plants per pot. In these, five evaluators with different levels of experience with the crop made the visual selection for each plant. Evaluators differ in their ability to identify more productive plants, but this ability is not associated with the evaluator's experience with the crop. In the search for more productive soybean plants, the number of pods per plant is the characteristic that most assists visual selection, provided there is uniformity of experimental conditions and genetic variability.

O avanço das tecnologias móveis, associado à mobilidade crescente dos dispositivos, permitiu a incorporação do ambiente virtual a diversas atividades cotidianas, inclusive no âmbito da saúde, introduzindo conceitos como telemedicina, telessaúde, eHealth e mHealth. Além de apresentar esses novos conceitos, o presente artigo teve como objetivo discutir os avanços e os desafios das tecnologias móveis em saúde a partir de reflexões sobre desenvolvimento, aplicações, legislação e ética. Por seu caráter inovador, as tecnologias móveis em saúde envolvem muitos atores na jornada até o usuário final, focados na concepção, desenvolvimento técnico, regulação sanitária e elaboração de diretrizes clínicas, e têm despertado grande interesse para fins de monitoramento e cuidados em diferentes condições clínicas. Entretanto, na avaliação da efetividade e da segurança das tecnologias móveis em saúde, não se observa o mesmo rigor metodológico exigido para ensaios clínicos de medicamentos e outros produtos de saúde; ainda, o entusiasmo pela inovação se contrapõe às preocupações regulatórias e éticas relacionadas à proteção de dados, à privacidade, ao acesso aos dispositivos móveis e às disparidades tecnológicas e sociais. Apesar das possíveis limitações, as tecnologias móveis, assim como outros recursos da telessaúde, têm alcançado resultados promissores. A atenção digital em saúde tem grande potencial de expansão e representa uma oportunidade para que as práticas tradicionais de saúde sejam revisadas a partir da seleção e da incorporação das tecnologias móveis aos sistemas de saúde, sempre que sejam observados benefícios embasados nas melhores evidências.

Vinasse is not only effectively used in pest control but also creates a conducive environment for the growth of antagonistic microorganisms. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the potential of vinasse applied via soil for the management of root-knot nematodes in soybean culture. The experimental design was entirely random, in a factorial scheme (2 × 6), consisting of two species of nematodes, Meloidogyne incognita and M. javanica, under vinasse application at five concentrations (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%) and one control (water), with five repetitions. Soybean plants Intacta cv. M-Soy 8644 IPRO were inoculated with 4000 eggs/juveniles of each species separately. At 60 days after the first application of vinasse, evaluations of parasitism and agronomic characteristics in soybean were performed. Stillage resulted in the highest average values for root volume and root fresh mass in plants inoculated with M. incognita, showing respective increases of 24.33% and 14.92% compared to plants inoculated with M. javanica. However, concentrations exceeding 60% had a detrimental effect on all agronomic variables of soybean. For parasitism, an interaction among the factors was observed, with a significant effect (p < 0.01) for most of the evaluated variables, except for the number of eggs in the soil. The concentration equivalent to 60% vinasse promoted a sharp reduction in parasitism for the two nematode species, making reproduction on plant roots unfeasible.

Soybean is the main leguminous crop in Brazil, mostly grown in tropical soils with low potassium (K) availability. Therefore, the identification of new genotypes with efficient K uptake and utilization in environments with low exchangeable K content is an economically viable alternative to maximize crop yield in Brazil. A study was conducted to investigate the response of 25 modern high-yield soybean genotypes for K-use efficiency in a sandy tropical soil of the Brazilian Cerrado. Treatments were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2 × 25 factorial scheme: two levels of K fertilization [20 mg K dm−3 (low level) or 200 mg K dm−3 (high level)] and 25 soybean genotypes with three replicates. Plant morphological traits, leaf K, and crop production components were measured. Based on grain production data, K-use efficiency (KUE) and response efficiency (RE) to K fertilization were calculated. Leaf area, shoot dry matter, pod number per plant, 1000-grain weight, and grain yield were the crop characteristics most limited by low soil K availability. The soybean genotypes “TMG7061 IPRO”, “BMX Bônus IPRO”, “RK6719 IPRO”, and “RK8317 IPRO” were classified as efficient in the use of soil K and are the most suitable genotypes to be cultivated in agricultural soils with low K availability. The genotypes “98R35 IPRO”, “HO Maracaí IPRO”, “BMX Bônus IPRO”, and “RK7518 IPRO” were classified as responsive to K fertilization and are the most recommended genotypes for cultivation in agricultural areas with the application of high K fertilizer rates. The genotype “BMX Bônus IPRO” simultaneously combines characteristics of K-use efficiency and response to K fertilization and hence can be grown in both K-deficient and optimal soils.

Abstract The structural dynamics of macromolecules is important for most microbiological processes, from protein folding to the origins of neurodegenerative disorders. Noninvasive measurements of these dynamics are highly challenging. Recently, optical sensors have been shown to allow noninvasive time-resolved measurements of the dynamic polarizability of single-molecules. Here we introduce a method to efficiently predict the dynamic polarizability from the atomic configuration of a given macromolecule. This provides a means to connect the measured dynamic polarizability to the underlying structure of the molecule, and therefore to connect temporal measurements to structural dynamics. To illustrate the methodology we calculate the change in polarizability as a function of time based on conformations extracted from molecular dynamics simulations and using different conformations of motor proteins solved crystalographically. This allows us to quantify the magnitude of the changes in polarizablity due to thermal and functional motions.

Our working hypothesis was that magnesium (Mg) supplementation modulates plant performance under low water availability and improves drought tolerance in soybean genotypes. Plants of Bônus 8579, M8808 and TMG1180 genotypes were grown under field conditions and subjected to three water stress treatments (control, moderate and severe stress) and three Mg levels [0.9 (low), 1.3 (adequate) and 1.7 cmolc dm-³ (supplementation)]. After 28 days of drought imposition, the growth parameters, osmotic potential, relative water content, leaf succulence, Mg content and photosynthetic pigments were assessed. In general, drought drastically decreased the growth in all genotypes, and the reductions were intensified from moderate to severe stress. Under adequate Mg supply, TMG1180 was the most drought-tolerant genotype among the soybean plants, but Mg supplementation did not improve its tolerance. Conversely, although the M8808 genotype displayed inexpressive responses to drought under adequate Mg, the Mg-supplemented plants were found to have surprisingly better growth performance under stress compared to Bônus 8579 and TMG1180, irrespective of drought regime. The improved growth of high Mg-treated M8808-stressed plants correlated with low osmotic potential and increased relative water content, as well as shoot Mg accumulation, resulting in increased photosynthetic pigments and culminating in the highest drought tolerance. The results clearly indicate that Mg supplementation is a potential tool for alleviating water stress in M8808 soybean plants. Our findings suggest that the enhanced Mg-induced plant acclimation resulted from increased water content in plant tissues and strategic regulation of Mg content and photosynthetic pigments.

BackgroundMultimorbidity is one of the greatest challenges facing health and social care systems globally. It is associated with high rates of health service use, adverse healthcare events, and premature death. Despite its importance, little is known about the effects of contextual determinants such as household and area characteristics on health and care outcomes for people with multimorbidity. This study protocol presents a plan for the examination of associations between individual, household, and area characteristics with important health and social care outcomes.MethodsThe study will use a cross-section of data from the SAIL Databank on 01 January 2019 and include all people alive and registered with a Welsh GP. The cohort will be stratified according to the presence or absence of multimorbidity, defined as two or more long-term conditions. Multilevel models will be used to examine covariates measured for individuals, households, and areas to account for social processes operating at different levels. The intra-class correlation coefficient will be calculated to determine the strength of association at each level of the hierarchy. Model outcomes will be any emergency department attendance, emergency hospital or care home admission, or mortality, within the study follow-up period.DiscussionHousehold and area characteristics might act as protective or risk factors for health and care outcomes for people with multimorbidity, in which case results of the analyses can be used to guide clinical and policy responses for effective targeting of limited resources.

Abstract The objective was to evaluate the effect of dietary Bacillus altitudinis spore supplementation during day (D)0–28 post-weaning (PW) and/or D29–56 PW compared with antibiotic and zinc oxide (AB + ZnO) supplementation on pig growth and gut microbiota. Eighty piglets were selected at weaning and randomly assigned to one of five dietary treatments: (1) negative control (Con/Con); (2) probiotic spores from D29–56 PW (Con/Pro); (3) probiotic spores from D0–28 PW (Pro/Con); (4) probiotic spores from D0–56 PW (Pro/Pro) and (5) AB + ZnO from D0–28 PW. Overall, compared with the AB + ZnO group, the Pro/Con group had lower body weight, average daily gain and feed intake and the Pro/Pro group tended to have lower daily gain and feed intake. However, none of these parameters differed between any of the probiotic-treated groups and the Con/Con group. Overall, AB + ZnO-supplemented pigs had higher Bacteroidaceae and Prevotellaceae and lower Lactobacillaceae and Spirochaetaceae abundance compared to the Con/Con group, which may help to explain improvements in growth between D15–28 PW. The butyrate-producing genera Agathobacter, Faecalibacterium and Roseburia were more abundant in the Pro/Con group compared with the Con/Con group on D35 PW. Thus, whilst supplementation with B. altitudinis did not enhance pig growth performance, it did have a subtle, albeit potentially beneficial, impact on the intestinal microbiota.
