5. Constructing and Machine Learning Calabi-Yau Five-folds

We construct all possible complete intersection Calabi-Yau five-folds in a product of four or less complex projective spaces, with up to four constraints. We obtain $27068$ spaces, which are not related by permutations of rows and columns of the configuration matrix, and determine the Euler number for all of them. Excluding the $3909$ product manifolds among those, we calculate the cohomological data for $12433$ cases, i.e. $53.7 \%$ of the non-product spaces, obtaining $2375$ different Hodge diamonds. The dataset containing all the above information is available at https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/z7ii5idt6qxu36e0b8azq/h?rlkey=0qfhx3tykytduobpld510gsfy&dl=0 . The distributions of the invariants are presented, and a comparison with the lower-dimensional analogues is discussed. Supervised machine learning is performed on the cohomological data, via classifier and regressor (both fully connected and convolutional) neural networks. We find that $h^{1,1}$ can be learnt very efficiently, with very high $R^2$ score and an accuracy of $96\%$, i.e. $96 \%$ of the predictions exactly match the correct values. - Abstract
We leveraged the power of ChatGPT and Bayesian optimization in the development of a multi-AI-driven system, backed by seven large language model-based assistants and equipped with machine learning algorithms, that seamlessly orchestrates a multitude of research aspects in a chemistry laboratory (termed the ChatGPT Research Group). Our approach accelerated the discovery of optimal microwave synthesis conditions, enhancing the crystallinity of MOF-321, MOF-322, and COF-323 and achieving the desired porosity and water capacity. In this system, human researchers gained assistance from these diverse AI collaborators, each with a unique role within the laboratory environment, spanning strategy planning, literature search, coding, robotic operation, labware design, safety inspection, and data analysis. Such a comprehensive approach enables a single researcher working in concert with AI to achieve productivity levels analogous to those of an entire traditional scientific team. Furthermore, by reducing human biases in screening experimental conditions and deftly balancing the exploration and exploitation of synthesis parameters, our Bayesian search approach precisely zeroed in on optimal synthesis conditions from a pool of 6 million within a significantly shortened time scale. This work serves as a compelling proof of concept for an AI-driven revolution in the chemistry laboratory, painting a future where AI becomes an efficient collaborator, liberating us from routine tasks to focus on pushing the boundaries of innovation.

10. Aspects of the Classical Double Copy

This thesis applies the Kerr-Schild and the Weyl double copy formalisms to study various concepts in the physics literature. First we apply both the Kerr-Schild and the Weyl double copy to solution generating transformations in General Relativity, where we identify Ehlers transformation as the double copy of electromagnetic duality transformation. Secondly, as a spin-off of the Weyl double copy, we use gauge fields defined on curved spacetimes to construct the Weyl tensor and study a host of solution of Einstein's equations. This study provides a test of the non-triviality of the double copy formalism. The second half of the thesis deals with mathematical concepts of physical relevance. First we apply the Kerr-Schild double copy to the concept of holonomy groups of Riemannian manifolds. We find that the single copy of the Riemannian holonomy operator, which we dub SCH, to be a similar operator constructed from the single copy gauge-field curvature. This is followed by a study of this single copy operator on different solutions of Einstein equations and their respective single copies, where we find that the holonomy and SCH groups differ for the Taub-NUT metric, while both reducing to $\text{SU}(2)$ for self-dual solutions. Lastly, we apply the Kerr-Schild double copy to the Ricci flow equation, interpreted as the beta function of the closed string, and obtain the Yang-Mills flow equation, which is physically interpreted as the beta function of the open string coupled to a gauge field., Comment: PhD thesis

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. We study the use of parametric building information modeling (BIM) to automatically generate training data for artificial neural networks (ANNs) to recognize building objects in photos. Teaching artificial intelligence (AI) machines to detect building objects in images is the foundation toward AI-assisted semantic 3D reconstruction of existing buildings. However, there exists the challenge of acquiring training data which is typically human-annotated, that is, unless a computer machine can generate high-quality data to train itself for a certain task. In that vein, we trained ANNs solely on realistic computer-generated images of 3D BIM models which were parametrically and automatically generated using the BIMGenE program. The ANN training result demonstrated generalizability and good semantic segmentation on a test case as well as arbitrary photos of buildings that are outside the range of the training data, which is significant for the future of training AI with generated data for solving real-world architectural problems.

IntroductionAlthough neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease (MOGAD) are rare diseases, they pose a significant burden on both society and the healthcare system. This study aims to discuss the demographics and patient characteristics of these diseases in a single center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).MethodsThis is a retrospective, descriptive study that included patients with either NMOSD or MOGAD treated at Rashid Hospital, UAE during the period between January 2019 and January 2024. Patients were selected and categorized according to NMOSD criteria, aquaporin-4 antibodies, and MOG antibodies. Patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and medical history were retrieved from their medical records and descriptively analyzed in the light of patients’ serological data.ResultsWe identified 34 patients with non-multiple sclerosis atypical CNS inflammatory/demyelinating syndromes. Twenty-seven patients (79.4%) fulfilled the criteria for NMOSD, while seven (20.6%) tested positive for MOG antibodies, fulfilling the criteria for MOGAD. In the NMOSD cohort, 19% (n = 5) were AQP4-antibody negative. Seventy-four percent of the NMOSD cohort and 43% of the MOGAD cohort were female. For MOGAD patients, disease onset was at a younger age (median onset age of 25 years) compared to the overall study population (mean onset age of 28.94 years). Long segment transverse myelitis was only detected in NMOSD patients (33.3%), and brainstem syndrome with area postrema syndrome was more common in the MOGAD cohort (29% vs. 4%). The rate of positive response to intravenous methylprednisolone as initial therapy was comparable across both cohorts (74% in case of NMOSD and 71% in case of MOGAD).ConclusionThis study provides valuable insights into the status of NMOSD and MOGAD in the UAE, highlighting the need for larger, prospective studies to further characterize these diseases in the local population, as well as the need for improved understanding of the epidemiology and management of these rare but debilitating conditions.

This paper presents results from a comprehensive study of source apportionment of particulate matter (PM) of size PM2.5 and PM10 near a busy highway in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Source apportionment was carried out using US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Positive Matrix Factorization model. Furthermore, backward trajectory analysis and Potential Source Contribution Function were used to assess air mass transport pathways and identify potential source regions, respectively. The results revealed six major sources for PM2.5, including traffic, sea salt, fugitive dust, secondary aerosols, heavy oil combustion and mineral dust. For PM10, four major sources were identified, including secondary aerosols, traffic, sea salt and mineral dust. Traffic emissions were found to be significant contributors to both PM2.5 and PM10 pollution, along with natural sources like sea salt and mineral dust. Backward trajectory analysis indicated the influence of different wind regimes on air mass transport, with contributions from regions like Arabian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Oman and Iran. The Conditional Bivariate Probability Function analysis further explained the impact of local traffic emissions and other sources on PM pollution under varying wind conditions.

BackgroundRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common condition treated with biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic medicines (bDMARDs). However, many patients exhibit resistance, necessitating the use of machine learning models to predict remissions in patients treated with bDMARDs, thereby reducing healthcare costs and minimizing negative effects.ObjectiveThe study aims to develop machine learning models using data from the Kuwait Registry for Rheumatic Diseases (KRRD) to identify clinical characteristics predictive of remission in RA patients treated with biologics.MethodsThe study collected follow-up data from 1,968 patients treated with bDMARDs from four public hospitals in Kuwait from 2013 to 2022. Machine learning techniques like lasso, ridge, support vector machine, random forest, XGBoost, and Shapley additive explanation were used to predict remission at a 1-year follow-up.ResultsThe study used the Shapley plot in explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to analyze the effects of predictors on remission prognosis across different types of bDMARDs. Top clinical features were identified for patients treated with bDMARDs, each associated with specific mean SHAP values. The findings highlight the importance of clinical assessments and specific treatments in shaping treatment outcomes.ConclusionThe proposed machine learning model system effectively identifies clinical features predicting remission in bDMARDs, potentially improving treatment efficacy in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Abstract Objectives Creating environmentally sustainable healthcare culture within the dental field requires embedding the content in the dental curriculum at the undergraduate level. This study aimed to explore the current awareness and drivers among dental students and educators regarding environmentally sustainable dentistry (ESD) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and identify barriers and enablers to embrace it. Methods A cross-sectional survey using online questionnaires was carried out in six undergraduate dental education institutes within the UAE. Data analysis included descriptive statistics. Results In total 153 students and 53 educators participated in the survey. Most students and educators were not aware of any ESD content in their curricula. However, the majority of educators were familiar with the concept of ESD, while students were mostly unfamiliar or slightly familiar. Nonetheless, students largely agreed on its importance and their interest in learning it, as they viewed it relevant to their future practice. Educators agreed that the dental profession has a responsibility to be environmentally friendly and expressed their desire in introducing ESD content into the curricula. Several barriers were reported such as lack of knowledge, curricula space, educational resources, and time. Meanwhile, enablers included providing ESD capacity building, training and resources. Conclusions There was no explicit presence of ESD content in the dental curricula in the UAE. Despite the lack of adequate awareness on this topic among educators and more so among students, they both had positive views towards incorporating ESD into dental curricula. Overall, this study highlighted the importance of promoting ESD in dental programs. Clinical significance: ESD is gradually becoming a critical aspect of modern oral healthcare system. It has been mandated in the dental curricula in several regions globally. Embedding ESD in the UAE dental curricula would have several benefits for the environment as well as the future of the dental profession in the region. The clinical significance includes, but not limited to, improved treatment outcomes; patients, students and staff health and well-being; reduced health risks, and cost savings.

OBJECTIVES:. Anemia has been associated with an increased risk of both cardiac arrest and stroke, frequent complications of COVID-19. The effect of hemoglobin level at ICU admission on a composite outcome of cardiac arrest or stroke in an international cohort of COVID-19 patients was investigated. DESIGN:. Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected database. SETTING:. A registry of COVID-19 patients admitted to ICUs at over 370 international sites was reviewed for patients diagnosed with cardiac arrest or stroke up to 30 days after ICU admission. Anemia was defined as: normal (hemoglobin ≥ 12.0 g/dL for women, ≥ 13.5 g/dL for men), mild (hemoglobin 10.0–11.9 g/dL for women, 10.0–13.4 g/dL for men), moderate (hemoglobin ≥ 8.0 and < 10.0 g/dL for women and men), and severe (hemoglobin < 8.0 g/dL for women and men). PATIENTS:. Patients older than 18 years with acute COVID-19 infection in the ICU. INTERVENTIONS:. None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS:. Of 6926 patients (median age = 59 yr, male = 65%), 760 patients (11.0%) experienced stroke (2.0%) and/or cardiac arrest (9.4%). Cardiac arrest or stroke was more common in patients with low hemoglobin, occurring in 12.8% of patients with normal hemoglobin, 13.3% of patients with mild anemia, and 16.7% of patients with moderate/severe anemia. Time to stroke or cardiac arrest by anemia status was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression with death as a competing risk. Covariates selected through clinical knowledge were age, sex, comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cardiac or neurologic conditions), pandemic era, country income, mechanical ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Moderate/severe anemia was associated with a higher risk of cardiac arrest or stroke (hazard ratio, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.05–1.67). CONCLUSIONS:. In an international registry of ICU patients with COVID-19, moderate/severe anemia was associated with increased hazard of cardiac arrest or stroke.

The use of learning games in education, particularly for second language (L2) acquisition, has gained significant traction recently, establishing game-based learning as a notable academic discipline. This study examines how computer game-based learning influences ESL undergraduates’ speaking abilities, comparing traditional teaching methods with game-based teaching techniques. The study employed action research utilizing a control-experimental groups technique with a sample of 60 learners. Data were collected through observation sessions, interviews, as well as pre-tests and post-tests on English speaking skills. Upon comparing the scores of the control and experimental groups, the experimental group showed greater improvement in speaking skills. This study provides significant insights into the area of game-based learning using computers, particularly among international students in ESL contexts.

Abstract Objectives the primary aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of low bone mineral density in Bahrain. Methods this was a retrospective study, which targeted a cohort of 4822 Bahraini subjects (mean age 59.36 years: 93% females). Demographic data and results of lumbar and femur DEXA scan for the targeted sample, over the period 2016–2018, were retrieved from four hospitals. Results The prevalence of low BMD was 62.3% (46.4% had osteopenia and 15.9% had osteoporosis). The highest rate of osteopenia was detected at the age group younger than 44 years. The perturbative double copy is by now a highly established correspondence between gravity and gauge theories. Non-perturbatively, information ranging from classical solutions to topological quantities on both sides have been related to each other via the double copy correspondence. In this paper, we add another result, where we show that the single copy of the Ricci flow is the Yang-Mills flow on the space of connections of a principal $\text{U}(1)$-bundle.

The Bahraini higher education sector has been subject to a substantial reform process throughout the past two decades. In this process, the government's role transformed from being the sole educational service provider to the regulator responsible for protecting the public good. This transformation opened the door for private universities to emerge onto the landscape. A neoliberal orientation, including the privatisation of education, increased the pressure on institutions and individuals to meet international standards and comply with the new market rules. The need for efficiency and lean operations resulted in the rise of part-time (PT) employment. Naturally, the traditional employment relationship between academics and their institutions also changed. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse this employment from the perspective of both full-time (FT) and PT faculty. The notion of the Psychological Contract (PC) is deployed as a conceptual lens to facilitate the investigation. The PC refers to the implicit and sometimes unspoken aspects of the agreement between employees and employers. The study examines the content and nature of the PC of academic staff based on the framework discussed by Rousseau (1995). Adopting a qualitative approach, ten faculty members (five males and five females) working at different higher educational institutions in Bahrain were interviewed. The participants were from both public and private institutions. The data were analysed using the thematic analysis technique. The analysis revealed six key themes and 15 sub-themes, addressing the issues of obligations, expectations, promises, and reciprocity. The results suggest that FT faculty differ from their PT counterparts in their expectations of institutions and how they relate to them. FT faculty reported a significant increase in the administrative burden associated with their role. Quality assurance (QA) and accreditation reviews expanded the scope of their job, compromising their feeling of autonomy. Despite marginalisation and unequal pay, PT faculty enjoy the luxury of choosing work assignments and the ability to evade QA reviews, giving them a feeling of contentment to a certain extent. The results also suggest that PT faculty experience a unique type of PC that seems to be neglected in the literature. Overall, the study shows that the psychological experience of academics is characterised by conflicting feelings and values. There is a need for institutions and regulators to assess the academic workload and evaluate the real added value of neoliberal practices in the HE sector.

الأهداف: هدفت الدراسة الحالية إلى الكشف عن مستوى ممارسة المعلّمين لمعايير جودة الممارسات التقييمية في مملكة البحرين. المنهجية: اتبع في هذه الدراسة المنهج الوصفي التحليلي، وقد تكونت عينة الدراسة من (430) معلّما ومعلّمة من مختلف مراحل التعليم تم اختيارهم بالطريقة الطبقية العشوائية، ولتحقيق أهداف الدراسة؛ تم ببناء قائمة معايير جودة الممارسات التقييمية مكونة من (53) فقرة في صورتها النهائيّة، موزعة على (5) مجالات، وهي (تطوير الأدوات والأساليب التقييمية، التصحيح ورصد الدرجات، الإخبار بنتائج التقويم، الممارسات الأخلاقية للتقويم، استخدام نتائج التقويم) بعد التحقق من خصائصها السايكومتريّة. النتائج: وتبيّن من نتائج الدراسة أن مستويات ممارسة المعلّمين لمعايير جودة الممارسات التقييمية جاءت مرتفعة في جميع مجالات الاستبانة وعلى الاستبانة ككل، حيث تراوحت المتوسطات للمجالات بين (3.08 - 3.44)، حيث كان المجال الأقل متوسطًا هو مجال ممارسات تطوير الأدوات والأساليب التقييمية، بينما كان المجال الأعلى هو مجال الممارسات الأخلاقية للتقويم، واتضح من نتائج الدراسة وجودة فروقٍ ذات دلالة إحصائية عند مستوى الدلالة (α=0.05) في مستوى الممارسة تعزى لمتغيري المؤهل ولصالح حاملي البكالوريوس، والخضوع لتدريب في القياس والتقويم ولصالح من تلقى أكثر من دورة متخصصة في بناء الاختبارات والقياس والتقويم، بينما لم تظهر أي فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية عند مستوى الدلالة (α=0.05) تعزى لمتغيرات الجنس والمرحلة التدريسية وسنوات الخبرة. الخلاصة: اتضح أن مستويات ممارسة المعلمين لمعايير جودة الممارسات التقييمية جاء بدرجة مرتفعة، وأوصت الدراسة بضرورة بإجراء دراسة مماثلة على المدارس الخاصة، والاستمرار في دعم وتعزيز سياسات وبرامج التدريب بوزارة التربية والتعليم في تقييم تحصيل الطلبة.

This paper assesses empirically the COVID-19 effect on businesses and the potential dynamic changes regarding post-COVID-19 automation and technology penetration using various logistic regression models. A field survey was used to collect the necessary data for testing various hypotheses. This study demonstrates the severity of the pandemic on businesses and how it has changed their perspectives on technology as a critical aspect of survival and future success. The results showed that capital-intensive firms are more resilient to the crisis. In addition, the firms that were affected severely in terms of employment due to the pandemic believe that technology will significantly impact hiring, investment, and value added. This paper investigates a unique phenomenon represented by COVID-19, its impact on businesses in a resource-rich context and their responsiveness concerning technology deployment and automation.

The fluctuations in the international prices of crude oil have been a major concern for many economies who depend mainly on oil exports. Oil price shocks are a major disturbance for the economies of oil producing countries. This study investigates the impact of oil price shocks on selected macroeconomic variables in Kuwait using secondary data covering the period of 2001 to 2022. The study adopted the Vector autoregression (VAR) method to analyze the response of Kuwait macroeconomic variables to shocks in oil prices. Oil price in the study is considered in 2 categories: the linear oil price and the non-linear oil price (positive and negative changes in oil price). Based on the findings, it is observed that oil price shocks significantly impact macroeconomic variables in Kuwait. It is found that positive changes in oil prices have a more positive and significant impact on the macroeconomic variables compared to the negative changes in oil price. It is however concluded that there is a need for more policy developments to better harness periods of positive oil price experiences, and develop hedging risk framework for periods of negative changes in oil price in order to curb the impact of oil price shocks on Kuwait’s macroeconomy.

The double copy is a well-established relationship between gravity and gauge theories. It relates perturbative scattering amplitudes as well as classical solutions, and recently there has been mounting evidence that it also applies to non-perturbative information. In this paper, we consider the holonomy properties of manifolds in gravity and prescribe a single copy of gravitational holonomy that differs from the holonomy in gauge theory. We discuss specific cases and give examples where the single copy holonomy group is reduced. Our results may prove useful in extending the classical double copy. Abstract Background The global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant changes in the delivery of health care services such as attendance of scheduled outpatient hospital appointments. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on the rate and predictors of missed hospital appointment in the Sultanate of Oman. Methods A retrospective single-centre analysis was conducted to determine the effect of COVID-19 on missed hospital appointments at various clinics at The Royal Hospital (tertiary referral hospital) in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. The study population included scheduled face-to-face and virtual appointments between January 2019 and March 2021. Logistic regression models were used with interaction terms (post COVID-19) to assess changes in the predictors of missed appointments. Results A total of 34, 3149 scheduled appointments was analysed (320,049 face-to-face and 23,100 virtual). The rate of missed face-to-face hospital appointments increased from 16.9% pre to 23.8% post start of COVID-19, particularly in early pandemic (40.5%). Missed hospital appointments were more frequent (32.2%) in virtual clinics (post COVID-19). Increases in missed face-to-face appointments varied by clinic (Paediatrics from 19.3% pre to 28.2% post; Surgery from 12.5% to 25.5%; Obstetrics & Gynaecology from 8.4% to 8.5%). A surge in the frequency of missed appointments was seen during national lockdowns for face-to-face and virtual appointments. Most predictors of missed appointments did not demonstrate any appreciable changes in effect (i.e., interaction term not statistically significant). Distance of patient residence to the hospital revealed no discernible changes in the relative effect pre and post COVID-19 for both face-to-face and virtual clinic appointments. Conclusion The rate of missed visits in most clinics was directly impacted by COVID-19. The case mix of patients who missed their appointments did not change. Virtual appointments, introduced after start of the pandemic, also had substantial rates of missed appointments and cannot be viewed as the single approach that can overcome the problem of missing hospital appointments.

The synthetic scalability of water harvesting metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial for making these promising materials accessible and widely available for use in household devices. Herein, we present a facile, sustainable, and high-yield synthesis method to produce a series of water-harvesting MOFs, including MOF-303, CAU-23, MIL-160, MOF-313, CAU-10, and Al-fumarate. Using readily available reactants and water as the only solvent, we were able to synthesize these materials at the kilogram scale in a 200 L batch reactor with yields of 84–96% and space-time yields of 238–305 kg/day/m3 under optimized reaction conditions. We also show that our procedure preserves framework crystallinity, porosity, and water-harvesting performance of the MOFs synthesized at scale.

We describe RA patients with high and normal UA and study its association with RA activity.Methods: Adult RA patients from the Kuwait Registry for Rheumatic Diseases (KRRD) were studied from February 2012 through March 2022. Patients with documented UA levels were included. UA of > 357 μmol/L (6mg/dL) was considered high. Statistical comparison and correlation were made using multivariate logistic regression.Results: Overall, 1054 patients with documented UA. A total of 158 patients (15%) had high UA level with a mean of 409± 44.4μmol/L. The mean age for the high UA group and low UA group were 59.3 ± 10.7 years and 54.5 ± 12.4 years, respectively (p< 0.001). 49.4% were female in high UA group, and 62.2% were female in low UA group, respectively (p< 0.05). Logistic analysis showed an inverse relation between DAS28 and UA, as lower DAS28 score was associated with higher UA level (p=0.032) OR 1.39. There was a direct relation with HAQ, creatinine and UA. A higher HAQ is associated with a higher UA level (p=0.019) OR 0.78. High creatinine level is also associated with high UA level (p< 0.001) OR 0.24. The use of antirheumatic drugs was similar among patients with high and normal UA.Conclusion: RA patients with a higher UA had a lower disease activity despite using similar antirheumatic drugs.
