Optical spectra of alpha Lyr, alpha PsA, and beta Pic have been obtained at a velocity resolution of 3 km/s. No circumstellar absorption lines of Ca II or Na I are detected toward alpha Lyr or alpha PsA at sensitive limits. In the favorable case of beta Pic, where the circumstellar disk imaged by Smith and Terrile (1984) is seen nearly edge-on, a strong, narrow, circumstellar Ca II K absorption line previously reported by Slettebak (1982) and weaker, still narrower circumstellar Na I D lines are detected. Negative results of high sensitivity also are obtained for the Ca I 4226 A and CH(+) 4232 A lines, along with upper limits on the Zn II 2026, 2062 A doublet from archival IUE spectra. Under assumptions which agree with other well-established observations of the gaseous abundances of calcium and zinc, the total gaseous column density of hydrogen along a radius of the circumstellar disk is between 10 to the 18th and 4 x 10 to the 20th/sq cm. Within the boundaries of the dust disk detected by Smith and Terrile (1984) the total gaseous mass then is less than about 2, or less than 1 percent of the mass of the planetary system. A simplified model of the density distribution in the gaseous disk yields a characteristic total density n(H) of about 100,000/cu cm, which exceeds that of all interplanetary gas at earth's position by a factor of about 10,000.

Spectroscopic observations of 29 stars at 5303 A obtained with the coude spectrograph on the 2.7-m reflector at McDonald Observatory during 1979-1983 are reported. Instrumental FWHM resolution is 27, 54, or 10 pm, and detection limits near 100 fm equivalent width are obtained in optimal cases. The results are presented in tables and a diagram. No absorption attributable to Fe XIV in hot interstellar gas is detected except for HD 93521, on Apr. 10, 1981, only. This absorption can be located either in interstellar gas at 1.2 million K or less with an Fe XIV/Fe X ratio greater than 3 or in hot gas confined in an inhomogeneous stellar corona.

The optical interstellar absorption lines of Ti II, Ca II, Na I, and the 21 cm emission line of H I were observed at high resolution and high detection sensitivity toward none pairs of nearly aligned distant halo stars and foreground disk stars with well determined distances. Analysis of the column densities, velocities, and the directly determined variation of the titanium abundances with z-distance leads to a general picture of the neutral interstellar material in the lower galactic halo. Two types of gas with distinct distribution, kinematics, and abundances are found, a thick, low velocity disk (type I) extending from the plane to well beyond the thin disk of OB stars, and a high velocity, much less strongly depleted gas (type II) observed only at high z-distances, which constitutes at least 24 percent of the mass of the halo gas. The implications of this model for the observed neutral gas are discussed both in terms of the possible origins of the observed gas and in its comparison with quasi stellar object absorption lines. New and existing observations of 21-cm emission lines toward 10 distant, high-latitude OB stars are combined with existing observations of interstellar Lyman-alpha absorption lines, in order to determine the ratio, N21/N-alpha, of the two different column densities of H I. This ratio, which is related to the fraction of the cool, neutral gas in the halo that lies beyond each star, decreases smoothly to about unity with increasing distance from the galactic plane. The column density of neutral gas beyond about 1 kpc can be as much as one-third of the total above the plane, but only relatively small amounts of such gas lie more than 2 kpc from the plane. The distances to, and the possible birthplaces of, these Population I stars in the halo are discussed.

The 3384 absorption line of interstellar Ti II has been observed at high resolution along lines of sight toward nine nearly aligned pairs of foreground disk and background halo stars, the latter having z-distance greater than 500 pc. The primary result is the great strength of Ti II absorption perpendicular to the plane of the Galaxy. Compared with the well-studied disk abundances, there is apparently a vertical gradient of titanium depletion above the galactic plane. The gaseous titanium abundance relative to hydrogen increases with z-distance and with LSR velocity by factors exceeding 20 and can reach nearly solar proportions.
