Abstract

While the long-term vision of the advanced accelerator community is aimed at addressing the challenges of future collider technology, it is critical that the community takes advantage of the opportunity to make large societal impact through its near-term applications. In turn, enabling robust applications strengthens the quality, control, and reliability of the underlying accelerator infrastructure. The white paper contributions that are solicited here will summarize the near-term applications ideas presented by the advanced accelerator community, assessing their potential impact, discussing scientific and technical readiness of concepts, and providing a timeline for implementation., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Plasma-based accelerators use the strong electromagnetic fields that can be supported by plasmas to accelerate charged particles to high energies. Accelerating field structures in plasma can be generated by powerful laser pulses or charged particle beams. This research field has recently transitioned from involving a few small-scale efforts to the development of national and international networks of scientists supported by substantial investment in large-scale research infrastructure. In this New Journal of Physics 2020 Plasma Accelerator Roadmap, perspectives from experts in this field provide a summary overview of the field and insights into the research needs and developments for an international audience of scientists, including graduate students and researchers entering the field.

20. Polychromatic X-ray Beam from the Acceleration of Energetic Electrons in Ultrafast Laser-Produced Plasmas.

Abstract

Polychromatic beams of hard X-rays from ultrafast laser plasma interaction are studied. Just as in a conventional synchrotron, electrons are accelerated and wiggled, but on a much shorter scale of a few millimeters. By focusing a 50 TW CPA laser system (30 fs duration) onto a helium gas jet, we obtained a polychromatic collimated beam (50 mrad) of X-ray radiation in the keV range. In addition, its perfect synchronization with the laser system, its ultrafast duration (⋍30 fs) and its brightness (up to 108 photons/shot/solid angle at 0.1%BW)will make it applicable to both X-ray science and backlighting to address laboratory astrophysics research issues. Abstract

The article focuses on physicist Félicie Albert and her use of lasers to explore the most extreme forms of matter known to nature at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in Livermore, California. Topics include a description of the giant laser housed in the NIF facility, Albert's use of the laser wakefield acceleration technique to coax Titan laser into generating betatron X-rays, and the multiple pulses fired by Titancan in a day.
