Abstract

Refractory black carbon aerosols (rBC) from biomass burning and fossil fuel combustion are deposited to the Antarctic ice sheet and preserve a history of emissions and long-range transport from low- and mid-latitudes. Antarctic ice core rBC records may thus provide information with respect to past combustion aerosol emissions and atmospheric circulation. Here, we present six East Antarctic ice core records of rBC concentrations and fluxes covering the last two centuries with approximately annual resolution (cal. yr. 1800 to 2000). The ice cores were drilled in disparate regions of the high East Antarctic ice sheet, at different elevations and net snow accumulation rates. Annual rBC concentrations were log-normally distributed and geometric means of annual concentrations ranged from 0.10 to 0.18 m cro-g/kg. Average rBC fluxes were determined over the time periods 1800 to 2000 and 1963 to 2000 and ranged from 3.4 to 15.5 m /a and 3.6 to 21.8 micro-g/sq m/a, respectively. Geometric mean concentrations spanning 1800 to 2000 increased linearly with elevation at a rate of 0.025 micro-g/kg/500 m. Spectral analysis of the records revealed significant decadal-scale variability, which at several sites was comparable to decadal ENSO variability.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Carbon dioxide embolus has been reported as a rare but clinically important risk associated with transanal total mesorectal excision surgery. To date, there exists limited data describing the incidence, risk factors, and management of carbon dioxide embolus in transanal total mesorectal excision. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to obtain data from the transanal total mesorectal excision registries to identify trends and potential risk factors for carbon dioxide embolus specific to this surgical technique. DESIGN: Contributors to both the LOREC and OSTRiCh transanal total mesorectal excision registries were invited to report their incidence of carbon dioxide embolus. Case report forms were collected detailing the patient-specific and technical factors of each event. SETTINGS: The study was conducted at the collaborating centers from the international transanal total mesorectal excision registries. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Characteristics and outcomes of patients with carbon dioxide embolus associated with transanal mesorectal excision were measured. RESULTS: Twenty-five cases were reported. The incidence of carbon dioxide embolus during transanal total mesorectal excision is estimated to be ≈0.4% (25/6375 cases). A fall in end tidal carbon dioxide was noted as the initial feature in 22 cases, with 13 (52%) developing signs of hemodynamic compromise. All of the events occurred in the transanal component of dissection, with mean (range) insufflation pressures of 15 mm Hg (12-20 mm Hg). Patients were predominantly (68%) in a Trendelenburg position, between 30° and 45°. Venous bleeding was reported in 20 cases at the time of carbon dioxide embolus, with periprostatic veins documented as the most common site (40%). After carbon dioxide embolus, 84% of cases were completed after hemodynamic stabilization. Two patients required cardiopulmonary resuscitation because of cardiovascular collapse. Abstract

The discovery of the 2012 extreme melt event across almost the entire surface of the Greenland ice sheet is presented. Data from three different satellite sensors – including the Oceansat-2 scatterometer, the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, and the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder – are combined to obtain composite melt maps, representing the most complete melt conditions detectable across the ice sheet. Satellite observations reveal that melt occurred at or near the surface of the Greenland ice sheet across 98.6% of its entire extent on 12 July 2012, including the usually cold polar areas at high altitudes like Summit in the dry snow facies of the ice sheet. This melt event coincided with an anomalous ridge of warm air that became stagnant over Greenland. As seen in melt occurrences from multiple ice core records at Summit reported in the published literature, such a melt event is rare with the last significant one occurring in 1889 and the next previous one around seven centuries earlier in the Medieval Warm Period. Given its rarity, the 2012 extreme melt across Greenland provides an exceptional opportunity for new studies in broad interdisciplinary geophysical research.

Abstract

AimPreclinical studies have suggested that nitinol-based compression anastomosis might be a viable solution to anastomotic leak following low anterior resection. A prospective multicentre open label study was therefore designed to evaluate the performance of the ColonRing in (low) colorectal anastomosis. MethodThe primary outcome measure was anastomotic leakage. Patients were recruited at 13 different colorectal surgical units in Europe, the United States and Israel. Institutional review board approval was obtained. ResultsBetween 21 March 2010 and 3 August 2011, 266 patients completed the study protocol. The overall anastomotic leakage rate was 5.3% for all anastomoses, including a rate of 3.1% for low anastomoses. Septic anastomotic complications occurred in 8.3% of all anastomoses and 8.2% of low anastomoses. ConclusionNitinol compression anastomosis is safe, effective and easy to use and may offer an advantage for low colorectal anastomosis. A prospective randomized trial comparing ColonRing with conventional stapling is needed.

Abstract

Efforts to extract a Greenland ice core with a complete record of the Eemian interglacial (130,000 to 115,000 years ago) have until now been unsuccessful. The response of the Greenland ice sheet to the warmer-than-present climate of the Eemian has thus remained unclear. Here we present the new North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling ('NEEM') ice core and show only a modest ice-sheet response to the strong warming in the early Eemian. We reconstructed the Eemian record from folded ice using globally homogeneous parameters known from dated Greenland and Antarctic ice-core records. On the basis of water stable isotopes, NEEM surface temperatures after the onset of the Eemian (126,000 years ago) peaked at 8 ± 4 degrees Celsius above the mean of the past millennium, followed by a gradual cooling that was probably driven by the decreasing summer insolation. Between 128,000 and 122,000 years ago, the thickness of the northwest Greenland ice sheet decreased by 400 ± 250 metres, reaching surface elevations 122,000 years ago of 130 ± 300 metres lower than the present. Extensive surface melt occurred at the NEEM site during the Eemian, a phenomenon witnessed when melt layers formed again at NEEM during the exceptional heat of July 2012. With additional warming, surface melt might become more common in the future.

Abstract

Recent advances in three‐dimensional (3D) imaging of snow and firn combined with numerical modeling of flow through complex geometries have greatly improved the ability to predict permeability values based on microstructure. In this work, we combined 3D reconstructions of polar firn microstructure obtained from microcomputed tomography (mCT) and a 3D lattice‐Boltzmann (LB) model of air flow. We compared the modeled results to measurements of permeability for polar firn with a wide range of grain and pore‐scale characteristics. The results show good agreement between permeability measurements and calculated permeability values from the LB model over a wide range of sample types. The LB model is better at predicting measured permeability values than traditional empirical equations for polar firn.

Permeability is the fundamental parameter of a porous media that controls whether a surface is an acoustically hard one, through which fluids may not easily penetrate, or conversely a more transparent surface, across which gas and water may readily move. Permeability is the property that controls pressure-driven processes including rain infiltration in soils, surface-atmosphere gas exchange, and acoustic response of the ground. In this paper we describe results of preliminary field tests of the acoustic response of a sand surface under several conditions of moisture and disturbance. We compare these measurements to results of our theory by which a point acoustic source can be used to remotely determine the soil permeability on scales from centimeters to tens of meters across the ground surface. In addition to acoustic means of determining the permeability, we also make a number of direct, co-registered measurements of permeability for comparison., Prepared in collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Abstract

Concentration measurements of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrous acid (HONO), nitric acid(HNO3), formaldehyde (HCHO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), formic acid (HCOOH) and acetic acid (CH3COOH) wereperformed in air filtered through the pore spaces of the surface snowpack (firn air) at Summit, Greenland, in summer2000. In general, firn air concentrations of NO, NO2, HONO, HCHO, HCOOH, and CH3COOH were enhancedcompared to concentrations in the atmospheric boundary layer above the snow. Only HNO3 and H2O2 normallyexhibited lower concentrations in the firn air. In most cases differences were highest during the day and lowest duringnighttime hours. Shading experiments showed a good agreement with a photochemical NOx source in the surface snow. Patterns of H2O2, CH3COOH, and HNO3 observed within the surface snow-firn air system imply that the number of molecules in the snow greatly exceeded that in the firn air. Deduced partitioning indicates that the largest fractions of the acids were present at the ice grainair interface. In all cases, the number of molecules located at the interface was significantly higher than the amount in the firn air. Therefore, snow surface area and surface coverage are important parameters, which must be considered for the interpretation of firn air concentrations.

Institutional review board approval was obtained. Results Between 21 March 2010 and 3 August 2011, 266 patients completed the study protocol. The overall anastomotic leakage rate was 5.3% for all anastomoses, including a rate of 3.1% for low anastomoses. Septic anastomotic complications occurred in 8.3% of all anastomoses and 8.2% of low anastomoses. Conclusion Nitinol compression anastomosis is safe, effective and easy to use and may offer an advantage for low colorectal anastomosis. Abstract

Refractory black carbon aerosols (rBC) from biomass burning and fossil fuel combustion are deposited to the Antarctic ice sheet and preserve a history of emissions and long-range transport from low latitudes. Antarctic ice core rBC records may thus provide information with respect to past combustion aerosol emissions and atmospheric circulation. Here, we present six East Antarctic ice core records of rBC concentrations and fluxes covering the last two centuries with approximately annual resolution (cal. yr. 1800 to 2000). The ice cores were drilled in disparate regions of the high East Antarctic ice sheet, at different elevations and net snow accumulation rates. Annual rBC concentrations were log-normally distributed and geometric means of annual concentrations ranged from 0.10 to 0.18 µg kg-1. Average rBC fluxes were determined over the time periods 1800 to 2000 and 1963 to 2000 and ranged from 3.4 to 15.5 µg kg-1 m-2 a-1 and 3.6 to 21.8 µg kg-1 m-2 a-1 respectively. Geometric-mean concentrations spanning 1800 to 2000 increased linearly with elevation at a rate of 0.025 µg kg-1/500 m. Spectral analysis of the records revealed significant decadal scale variability, which at several sites was comparable to decadal ENSO variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Freezing phase change problems in conduction heat transfer represent a set of moving boundary problems for which much interest currently exists. In the work presented here, two-dimensional freezing is modeled by incorporating the use of transfinite mappings with a moving-mesh finite element technique. The use of transfinite mapping in a governing interior mesh motion is shown to provide very acceptable results and is demonstrated to be the most efficient general computational technique used to date. The model developed is capable of using either Cartesian or cylindrical coordinates. Both frozen and unfrozen phases may be modeled when conduction governs behavior in both. In the case of freezing of a fluid as it flows through a pipe the usefulness of always having the phase boundary coincident with element boundaries is demonstrated. Results of the model are shown to compare well with analytical and experimental results. A von Neumann stability analysis is performed for the numerical solution and tends to support the observation that the occurrence of a high Peclet number in the moving-mesh model of heat conduction may produce distortions of the numerical solution. This paper documents the development and verification of two finite difference models that solve the general two-dimensional form of the heat conduction equation, using the alternative-direction implicit method. Both can handle convective, constant flux, specified temperature and semi-infinite boundaries. The conducting medium may be composed of many materials. The first program, ADI, solves for the case where no change of state occurs. ADIPC solves for case where a freeze/thaw change of phase may occur, using the apparent heat capacity method. Both models are verified by comparison to analytical results. (Author)

Abstract

Keratinocyte stem cells are present in the murine epidermis, based on both in vitro and in vivo evidence, and better characterization of these cells remains an active goal. Because keratinocyte stem cells are believed to cycle slowly, a good method for identification is based on their ability to retain nucleoside analog, such as bromodeoxyuridine. Adult stem cells have been identified in other tissues, including hematopoietic, neural, and skeletal muscle, and stem cell surface markers have been characterized. We wanted to determine if cell-surface markers present on both hematopoietic and skeletal muscle stem cells (CD34, Sca-1, and Flk-1) were also present on keratinocyte stem cells, and could be used to identify them. The cell-surface expression of cells that retained bromodeoxyuridine label for at least 21 d was compared with that of nonlabel-retaining cells. Double-labeling for flow cytometric analysis was employed, and label-retaining cells were found to lack expression of the tested markers. Beta1 integrin levels were also evaluated, and although high expression was found on label-retaining cells, it was not specific for these cells.
