The piramutaba, Brachyplatystoma vaillantii is a freshwater catfish that is the most abundant fishery resource in the Amazon estuary. Piramutaba trawling is done on industrial fishing scale and is characterized by the presence of many freshwater and marine bycatch species, with and without commercial value. Here we describe the bycatch of the industrial fishery of piramutaba in the Amazon estuary and evaluate the relationship of two important environmental factors, depth and salinity, with the accidental capture of freshwater and marine fishes in the Amazon estuary in the rainy and dry seasons. We identified 21 cartilaginous fish species (19.1% freshwater and 80.9% marine) and 125 bony fish species (25.6% freshwater and 74.4% marine). The bycatch included 64 species without commercial value (43% of all bycatch species), which are always discarded. Freshwater and estuarine fishes exhibited significantly higher abundances in shallower environments, while marine fishes were similarly abundant along the entire depth gradient. On the contrary, the abundance of freshwater fishes significantly decreased, and that of estuarine and marine fishes significantly increased with increasing salinity. Regarding the conservation status of the bycatch species, one is classified as vulnerable (VU), and seven as critically endangered (CR). The information on the bycatch of piramutaba fishery in the Amazon estuary is important to subsidize regional fisheries policies and the management of protected areas.

In the last decades, capital-concentrating activities such as agribusiness, mining, and hydropower promoted extensive changes in land cover, hydrology, and environmental conditions. These changes are jeopardizing the basin’s biodiversity and ecosystem services. Threats are escalating as poor environmental policies continue to be formulated, such as environmentally unsustainable hydropower plants, large-scale agriculture for commodity production, and aquaculture with non-native fish. If the current model persists, it will deepen the environmental crisis in the basin, compromising broad conservation goals and social development in the long term. Better policies will require thought and planning to minimize growing threats and ensure the basin’s sustainability for future generations. The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes. A aquicultura é a atividade que mais cresce entre os setores de produção de alimentos, porém, se executada inadequadamente, pode causar a deterioração da qualidade da água. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a utilização do Índice de Estado Tróico (IET) como ferramenta de monitoramento de atividades aquícolas, especificamente do Parque Aquícola Sucupira, área de cultivo de peixes em tanques-rede no reservatório do Lajeado em Palmas/TO. O monitoramento foi realizado entre janeiro e agosto de 2017, envolvendo a coleta de amostras para análises dos parâmetros de fósforo total e cloroila-a. Paralelamente, houve coleta de dados de temperatura, turbidez, oxigênio dissolvido, condutividade, pH e sólidos totais dissolvidos. As variáveis limnológicas (temperatura, condutividade, turbidez, oxigênio dissolvido, pH e sólidos totais dissolvidos), com exceção do fósforo total, apesar das pequenas variações de oxigênio e sólidos totais, estão de acordo com as recomendações da Resolução CONAMA 357/05. Os dados obtidos permitem concluir que a área aquícola apresentou predominância de estado tróico supereutróico e que o estado tróico do reservatório nas proximidades dos tanques-rede sofre forte inluência externa de atividades antrópicas, principalmente no período chuvoso. No período da seca, por não haver a diluição de nutrientes devido à escassez de chuvas, ocorre aumento na concentração de fósforo na água, levando a um estado hipereutróico. O resultado se deve ao fato de o lago apresentar naturalmente altos índices de fósforo, portanto, não é possível airmar que a aquicultura seja uma atividade impactante, sendo necessária a adoção de um programa de monitoramento com uma malha amostral mais abrangente em futuros estudos. A matriz energética do Brasil conta com participação expressiva das usinas hidrelétricas, responsáveis por mais da metade a energia elétrica gerada no país. Estes empreendimentos são exaltados pela política nacional do setor por assegurarem menor custo de produção e impacto ambiental se comparados a outras fontes de geração elétrica, além de contribuírem para o desenvolvimento regional e local. Entre as vantagens proporcionadas pela instalação de uma hidrelétrica, os estudos técnicos enfatizam ganhos permanentes a estados e municípios sedes por meio da CFURH - Compensação Financeira pelo Uso de Recursos Hídricos, cujos recursos devem favorecer a melhoria da infraestrutura, dos serviços públicos e, consequentemente, da qualidade de vida das comunidades. No entanto, a inexistência de uma legislação que vincule a compensação financeira à receita municipal e que oriente a sua aplicação abre margem para o uso do dinheiro em outros fins que não sejam em prol de melhorias para a sociedade. Este trabalho teve o objetivo de apontar o total de recursos provenientes de CFURH destinados, entre 2006 até 2016, aos municípios de Paranã e São Salvador do Tocantins, no Estado do Tocantins, Brasil, impactados por empreendimentos hidrelétricos, correlacionando os valores recebidos com o desenvolvimento social destas localidades. Os resultados evidenciam que, apesar do incremento da CFURH, os dois municípios exibem indicadores sociais insatisfatórios, com deficiências de infraestrutura, na oferta de equipamentos públicos, nas condições de moradia e na assistência à saúde, bem como limitada oferta de oportunidades de evolução educacional e profissional de suas populações.

A new species of Hemiodus is described from the Rio Xingu basin, Pará, Brazil. It is distinguished from congeners by the combination of presence of a dark longitudinal stripe extending from head to tip of lower caudal-fin lobe, an oblique blotch on dorsal-fin, 9–11 scale rows above lateral line, 58–66 perforated lateral line scales, and 17–20 circumpeduncular scales. Comments on the conservation status of the new species, as well as its relationships among Hemiodus species, are made.

A new species of Spectracanthicus is described from the Rio Javaes, Rio Araguaia basin. The new species is distinguished from its congeners (except Spectracanthicus immaculatus) by colour pattern: body dark grey to dark brown without dots or blotches (v. body colour with yellowish small dots in Spectracanthicus murinus, Spectracanthicus punctatissimus and Spectracanthicus tocantinensis and large white dots in Spectracanthicus zuanoni). It can be further distinguished from S. immaculatus by having thicker and less numerous teeth, with up to eight premaxillary and 20 dentary teeth (v. teeth thinner and more numerous with up to 22 premaxillary and 30 dentary teeth); dorsal and caudal fins without curved spines (v. dorsal and caudal fins with curved spines). Other osteological characters can also diagnose the new species from its congeners. In addition, a gross brain description and brief comments on the new species' ecological habitat are given.

In the middle of a political and fiscal crisis, the Brazilian government is applying successive budget cuts, including in science funding. Recent cuts radically affect research programs on biodiversity that are crucial components for the design and monitoring of public policies for nature conservation and sustainable development. We analyze the consequences of such cuts on the Research Program on Biodiversity (PPBio), the largest biodiversity research network in Brazil (626 researchers, nine networks in all Brazilian biomes). Brazil holds a substantial part of the world's biodiversity and of tropical forests that play a significant role for regional and global climate stability. If underfunding is maintained, the dismantling of the Brazilian PPBio will have consequences that go beyond biodiversity knowledge itself but affect society as a whole. Brazil will likely fail to reach the National Targets for Biodiversity 2011–2020, and it will be difficult to fulfill the restoration target of the Brazilian NDC and to advance with the sustainable development goals. © 2017 Associação Brasileira de Ciência Ecológica e Conservação

While anthropogenic disturbances can have damaging effects on biodiversity, they also offer an opportunity to understand how species adapt to new environments and may even provide insights into the earliest stages of evolutionary diversification. With these topics in mind, we explored the morphological changes that have occurred across several cichlid species following the damming of the Tocantins River, Brazil. The Tocantins was once a large (2,450 km), contiguous river system; however, upon closure of the Tucuruí Hydroelectric Dam in 1984, a large (~2,850 km2), permanent reservoir was established. We used geometric morphometrics to evaluate changes in native cichlids, comparing historical museum specimens collected from the Tocantins to contemporary specimens collected from the Tucuruí reservoir. Six species across five genera were included to represent distinct ecomorphs, from large piscivores to relatively small opportunistic omnivores. Notably, statistically significant changes in shape and morphological disparity were observed in all species. Moreover, the documented changes tended to be associated with functionally relevant aspects of anatomy, including head, fin, and body shape. Our data offer insights into the ways cichlids have responded, morphologically, to a novel lake environment and provide a robust foundation for exploring the mechanisms through which these changes have occurred.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o grau de trofia do ambiente utilizando o Índice de Estado Trófico (IET) em uma atividade aquícola de sistema de produção em tanques-rede no reservatório do Lajeado, Palmas, Tocantins na estação seca do ano. O monitoramento foi realizado no período de maio/2017 a agosto/2017 e envolveu a coleta de amostras para análises dos seguintes parâmetros de qualidade de água: fósforo total e clorofila-a. Paralelamente, houve a realização de coleta de dados de temperatura, turbidez, oxigênio dissolvido, condutividade, pH e sólidos totais dissolvidos. Os resultados do cálculo do Índice de Estado Trófico (IET) mostraram que a área em estudo durante os meses de maio e agosto apresentou-se predominantemente em graus eutrófico e hipereutrófico. O ponto controle também apresentou alto grau de trofia, indicando que o estado trófico do lago nas proximidades da área aquícola sofre forte influência de atividades antrópicas externas. Assim, os efeitos desta atividade a médio e longo prazo são difíceis de serem previstos, havendo a necessidade constante do monitoramento e controle da qualidade da água.Palavras-chave: aquicultura, eutrofização, impacto ambiental, poluição, tanque rede. MONITORING OF AQUACULTURE IN CONTINENTAL RESERVOIRS USING THE TROPHIC STATUS INDEX ABSTRACT:Aquaculture is the fastest growing activity among food production sectors, however, its practice can cause environmental impacts, in case if a monitoring plan is not applied. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the trophic environment status using the Trophic State Index (TSI) in an aquaculture activity in a netcage system in the Lajeado reservoir, Palmas, Tocantins during the dry season. The monitoring was carried out from May / 2017 to August / 2017 and involved the water sampling for analysis of the following water quality parameters: total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a. At the same time, data were collected on temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH and total dissolved solids. The Trophic State Index (TSI) results showed that the area under study during the months of May and August was predominantly under a supereutrophic condition. It indicates that the lake trophic state in the aquaculture surrounding area is strongly influenced by external anthropogenic activities. Thus, the effects of this activity in the medium and long term are difficult to predict, so it´s necessary to monitor and control the water quality.Keywords: aquaculture, eutrophication, environmental impact, pollution, net cage.

A biodiversidade aquática e a elevada produtividade pesqueira da Bacia Amazônica se devem principalmente à dinâmica anual dos pulsos de inundação e às extensas áreas alagáveis. Alguns dos principais impactos da construção de barragens para geração de hidroeletricidade incidem precisamente nesta dinâmica hidrológica. A construção da Usina Hidrelétrica (UHE) Belo Monte interfere na dinâmica hidrológica da Volta Grande do Xingu (VGX) ao desviar a maior parte da vazão para fora desse trecho do rio. Com base em uma análise crítica da literatura sobre o impacto de barragens e de monitoramentos em campo, que vêm sendo conduzidos tanto pelo empreendedor quanto por pesquisas independentes, verificamos que seriam necessários volumes de água substancialmente maiores do que o hidrograma proposto pela empresa e pela Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA), para não causar a total ruptura na conexão do rio com as planícies alagáveis, com efeitos negativos em cascata que comprometem, inclusive, a segurança alimentar em toda a VGX. A proposta de testar o hidrograma estabelecido pela empresa por seis anos, com uma drástica redução de vazão e perda da previsibilidade e regularidade do pulso anual de inundação, fere o Princípio Precaucionário, contraria o conhecimento ecológico acumulado sobre o tema e coloca em risco o ambiente, a biota e os modos de vida das populações humanas estabelecidas naquela região.Palavras-chave: Volta Grande do Xingu. Um levantamento ictiofaunístico conduzido em quatro corpos superficiais e em uma caverna na área cárstica do município de Lagoa da Confusão (TO), amostrou 74 espécies, principalmente da ordem Characiformes. Ao todo, 66 espécies foram amostradas nas localidades superficiais. Na caverna Gruta Casa de Pedra foram amostradas 29 espécies, com uma abundância numérica um pouco superior em relação às localidades superficiais, que pode está relacionado ao seu regime hídrico. Exemplares de Rhamdia aff. quelen coletados na caverna apresentaram diferentes classes de tamanho corpóreo, o que devido ao seu isolamento sazonal, provavelmente estão completando seus ciclos de vida na caverna, formando possivelmente uma população troglófila. Mais estudos nessa área merecem atenção, tendo em vista que vários desses sítios sofrem perturbação antrópica. An ichthyofaunistic survey conducted in four surface water bodies and one cave in a karstic area in the municipality of Lagoa da Confusão, State of Tocantins, sampled 74 species, mainly characiforms. Sixty six species were sampled in the surface waters. In the “Gruta Casa de Pedra” cave were sampled 29 species with a slightly numerical abundance compared to that found in the surface waters. Specimens of Rhamdia aff. quelen sampled in the cave showed different body sizes class . Their seasonal isolation inside the cave indicates probably that they are completing their life cycles in the subterranean environment, and probably represent a troglophilic population. More studies in this area deserve attention, considering that several of these sites suffer antropic disturbance.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o grau de trofia do Parque Aquícola Sucupira, área de cultivo de peixes em tanques-rede localizada no reservatório do Lajeado em Palmas, no Tocantins, utilizando o Índice de Estado Trófico (IET). O monitoramento foi realizado no período de janeiro a abril de 2017, envolvendo a coleta de amostras para análises dos parâmetros de fósforo total e clorofila-a. Paralelamente, houve realização de coleta de dados de temperatura, turbidez, oxigênio dissolvido, condutividade, pH e sólidos totais dissolvidos in loco. Os resultados do cálculo do Índice de Estado Trófico (IET) mostraram que a área em estudo durante os meses de janeiro a abril apresentou predominância de grau supereutrófico. Tudo indica que o estado trófico do lago nas proximidades da área aquícola sofre forte influência do período de chuva, porém, como os estudos não foram realizados no período de estiagem, não há como diferenciar os efeitos da chuva e da atividade piscícola no ambiente em estudo. Desta forma, novos estudos são necessários para entender os efeitos da atividade aquícola nos parâmetros de qualidade de água a médio e longo prazo, por meio da execução de planos de monitoramento limnológico.

The gross morphology of the gas bladder is described and illustrated for representatives of most species and all valid genera of the Auchenipteridae (Siluriformes). Although, a simple cordiform gas bladder is present in some species of the family, others are characterized by their distinctive gas-bladder shape and diverticula disposition. An acute posterior end of the gas bladder characterizes Centromochlus heckelii and C. macracanthus, and is variably present in specimens of Auchenipterus. Tocantinsia piresi and Asterophysus batrachus have distinctive gas bladders differing in number of diverticula (two or many). The two species of Trachycorystes are diagnosed based on their gas bladder morphology: T. menezesi has a simple cordiform bladder, whereas T. trachycorystes has a pair of lateral diverticulum and, usually, a well-developed terminal diverticulum. Species of Auchenipterichthys are characterized by having a secondary bladder with simple chamber. Short or elongate and divergent terminal diverticula are exclusive to most cis-andine species of Trachelyopterus. Tetranematichthys and trans-andine species of Trachelyopterus share a well-developed secondary chamber or terminal diverticula ventrally or dorsally connected to the posterior chambers. The small-sized species of Ageneiosus have well-developed gas bladders with a pair of posterior diverticula, whereas large-sized species have a reduced gas bladder with tunica externa varying from non-, partially, or completely ossified. Eight phylogenetic characters are proposed based on the morphology of the gas bladder and associated structures in species of Auchenipteridae, and the evolution of those characters in the family discussed. A new species of small auchenipterid catfish is described based on a single specimen from the Amazon basin and is placed into a new genus. Spinipterus, new genus, is diagnosed by the following striking autapomorphic features: pectoral and dorsal-fin spines with four prominent rows of serrations; lateral margin of the skull roofing bones ornamented with a single row of spines; size reduction of hipurals; elongation and angle of posterior cleithral process; and adducted dorsal fin rests into a mid-dorsal groove. The new genus also differs from most other auchenipterid genera by having lower counts for some fin rays. Current diagnoses of auchenipterid genera do not allow us to place the new species into any genus, which requires us to propose the new genus Spinipterus.

A new species of Trachycorystes from the rio Aripuanã, above Dardanelos and Andorinhas falls, is described. The new species is distinguished from the only other species of the genus, T. trachycorystes, by the following characteristics: jaws of equal length (vs. lower jaw prognathous in T. trachycorystes); skull roof covered by thick (vs. thin) integument; inner mental barbel very thin and short not reaching base of outer barbel (vs. extending to or beyond base of outer mental barbel); dorsal-fin spine serrated posteriorly, smooth or rough anteriorly (vs. serrated anteriorly and smooth or rough posteriorly); caudal fin shallowly forked (vs. emarginate); and gas bladder simple, without diverticula (vs. with three posterior diverticula). Comments and data on the nominal species Trachycorystes trachycorystes are provided. Trachycorystes cratensis Miranda Ribeiro, 1937, is allocated to the genus Trachelyopterus Valenciennes, 1840, and another local catfish species, Parotocinclus aripuanensis Garavello, 1988, has its type locality reassigned. Descreve-se uma espécie nova de Trachycorystes proveniente do curso superior do rio Aripuanã, acima das cachoeiras Dardanelos e Andorinhas. A espécie nova diferencia-se da outra espécie do gênero, T. trachycorystes, pelos seguintes caracteres: maxilas de mesmo comprimento, isto é, mandíbula não prognata (vs. mandíbula prognata em T. trachycorystes); teto do crânio coberto com pele espessa (vs. fina); barbilhão mental muito fino e curto não alcançando a base do barbilhão pós-mental (vs. estendendo-se até a base do barbilhão pós-mental ou além); espinho da nadadeira dorsal com a borda anterior lisa ou rugosa e a posterior com serras retrorsas (vs. borda anterior com serras e a posterior lisa ou rugosa); nadadeira caudal bifurcada (vs. emarginada); bexiga natatória simples, sem divertículos (vs. com três divertículos posteriores). Comentários e dados sobre as outras espécies nominais de Trachycorystes são apresentados. Trachycorystes cratensis Miranda Ribeiro, 1937, é transferido para o gênero Trachelyopterus Valenciennes, 1840, e retificam-se dados sobre a localidade-tipo de Parotocinclus aripuanensis Garavello, 1988.

A new species of Platydoras is described from the rio Xingu Basin, Brazil. Platydoras birindellii is distinguished from congeners by having gas bladder simple (vs. with posterior secondary chamber) and dorsal and caudal fins uniformly dusky (vs. with distinct marks composed of dark broad band or blotch on central portion of dorsal fin and pair of dark broad stripes on caudal fin, one central to each lobe). Platydoras birindellii shares a simple gas bladder with the sister taxon to Platydoras,Centrochir crocodili, a monotypic genus endemic to the Magdalena Basin. With respect to the caudal skeleton, the parhypural is incompletely fused to hypurals 1+2 in P. birindellii, a condition that is intermediate between those of Centrochir (parhypural typically separated from hypurals 1+2 by distinct suture) and Platydoras (parhypural typically fully fused to hypurals 1+2). Platydoras birindellii is commonly found in rocky clearwater rapids and apparently endemic to the middle and upper portions of the Xingu draining the Brazilian Shield.

The world's most biodiverse river basins—the Amazon, Congo, and Mekong—are experiencing an unprecedented boom in construction of hydropower dams. These projects address important energy needs, but advocates often overestimate economic benefits and underestimate far-reaching effects on biodiversity and critically important fisheries. Powerful new analytical tools and high-resolution environmental data can clarify trade-offs between engineering and environmental goals and can enable governments and funding institutions to compare alternative sites for dam building. Current site-specific assessment protocols largely ignore cumulative impacts on hydrology and ecosystem services as ever more dams are constructed within a watershed ( 1 ). To achieve true sustainability, assessments of new projects must go beyond local impacts by accounting for synergies with existing dams, as well as land cover changes and likely climatic shifts ( 2 , 3 ). We call for more sophisticated and holistic hydropower planning, including validation of technologies intended to mitigate environmental impacts. Should anything less be required when tampering with the world's great river ecosystems?

Cichla piquiti is endemic to the Tocantins-Araguaia river basin, but information about its biology is restricted to populations introduced in other basins. In order to fill this gap, we investigated the feeding ecology and reproductive dynamics of C. piquiti in Lajeado reservoir, rio Tocantins. A total of 270 fish were collected between November 2010 and October 2011. The diet is rich and composed of at least 23 resources, predominantly fish (at least 19 species). We observed no clear influence of sex, periods and ontogeny on diet, which was basically composed of Characidae and Cichlidae. Considering its reproductive dynamics, immature, reproductive and non-reproductive fish were recorded during the whole study, and reproductive effort did not differ among periods. Cichla piquiti also showed no pattern of energy allocation between reproductive and somatic activities. These results indicate that reproduction is occurring throughout the year and that this activity is not synchronized among individuals. In conclusion, this study presented valuable information on the ecology of C. piquiti within its natural range, which may subsidize management programs to conserve local stocks. This information may also provide theoretical insights to explain why C. piquiti , a voracious predator, is so harmful when introduced in non-Amazonian reservoirs. Cichla piquiti é uma espécie endêmica da bacia Tocantins-Araguaia, porém o conhecimento sobre sua biologia está amparado no estudo de populações introduzidas em outras bacias. Para preencher essa lacuna, o presente estudo investigou a ecologia alimentar e reprodutiva de C. piquiti no reservatório de Lajeado, rio Tocantins. Um total de 270 peixes foi coletado entre novembro/2010 e outubro/2011, na região superior do reservatório. A dieta da espécie é rica e envolveu a ingestão de pelo menos 23 recursos, com predomínio de peixes (pelo menos 19 espécies). Não observamos padrão de variação na dieta entre os sexos, períodos e ontogenia, com predomínio no consumo de Characidae e Cichlidae. Considerando a dinâmica reprodutiva, peixes imaturos, em reprodução e repouso foram registrados ao longo do ano, e o esforço reprodutivo (IGS) não diferiu entre os períodos. Cichla piquiti também não apresentou padrão claro de alocação de energia entre atividades somáticas e reprodutivas. Esses resultados indicam que a reprodução ocorre durante todo o ano e que essa atividade não é sincronizada entre os indivíduos. Concluindo, o presente estudo apresentou informações importantes sobre a ecologia de C. piquiti em sua área de distribuição natural, que devem embasar programas de manejo para a conservação dos estoques na região. Essas informações devem também fornecer suporte teórico para explicar porque C. piquiti , um predador voraz, é tão danoso quando introduzido em reservatórios não-Amazônicos.

Brachyplatystoma capapretum n. sp., a pimelodid catfish from the Amazon River, is described and diagnosed by its fine, densely spaced outer jaw teeth and relatively few rows of straight, depressible inner teeth; juveniles with large dark blotches on and above lateral line; adults with exceptionally dark pigmentation dorsally, abruptly countershaded near lateral line; broad, shallowly forked caudal fin. The systematic position of the new species was investigated with a maximum parsimony phylogenetic analysis of morphological characters. The resulting cladograms identify a nested set of unambiguous characters supporting the following monophyletic groups and taxonomic recommendations. Brachyplatystomatini new tribe is established for Brachyplatystoma and Platynematichthys and supported by two synapormorphies: two-chambered gas bladder connected by paired lateral tubes; cleithrum with blade-like ventral crest between pectoral spine articulation and posterior process of cleithrum. Myxiops aphos, new genus and species, is described from a river in the eastern portion of Bahia State, Brazil. Myxiops is distinguished from all other characid genera by the combination of the following features: infraorbitals fused in a unique fashion, resulting always in less than six autogenous bones; a single tooth row in the premaxilla; presence of somewhat pedunculate teeth, expanded and compressed distally, with cusps similar in shape and perfectly aligned along distal margin; ventral margin of toothed portion of maxillary curved towards ventral margin of premaxilla and maxillary teeth forming a continuous series with premaxillary teeth; margins of pre- and postzygapophyses with projections anteriorly and posteriorly directed; accumulation of epithelial cells forming globular structures distributed over head and scales; and base of anal fin without scales covering basal portion of unbranched and anterior branched rays. The presence of these features in other characids is discussed. Myxiops aphos, novo gênero e espécie, é descrita de um rio do leste do Estado da Bahia, Brasil. Myxiops distingue-se de todos os outros gêneros de caracídeos pela seguinte combinação de caracteres: exclusivo modo de fusão dos infraorbitais, resultando em menos de seis ossos autógenos; uma única série de dentes no pré-maxilar; presença de dentes comprimidos com cúspides similares em tamanho e alinhadas ao longo da margem distal dos dentes; margem ventral da porção com dentes do maxilar arqueando-se em direção à margem ventral do pré-maxilar e dentes do maxilar formando um eixo contínuo com os dentes do pré-maxilar; margens das pré- e pós-zigapófises com projeções anterior e posteriormente direcionadas; acúmulo de células epiteliais formando estruturas globulares distribuídas sobre a cabeça e escamas; e base da nadadeira anal sem escamas. A presença destas características em outros caracídeos é discutida.

New data are presented on the sex chromosomes of the fish species Eigenmannia virescens (Gymnotiformes, Sternopygidae). A new finding, involving the occurrence of ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes, is described in specimens sampled from the São Francisco and Amazon river basins in Brazil. All individuals had a chromosome number of 2n = 38. The homologs of the sex chromosome pair from the São Francisco river basin sample differed only in their morphology, while those from the Amazonian sample differed both in morphology and heterochromatin pattern. A possible model for the evolution of the sex chromosomes in E. virescens is proposed, including data from populations from the Paraná (Brazil) river basin, in which male heterogamety has already been described. The occurrence of different sex chromosome systems in species and populations of the neotropical freshwater fish fauna is discussed.

Centromochlus actually comprises eleven species, being the most problematic genus among the Centromochlinae, including morphologically heterogeneous taxa. The Centromochlus species have a wide distributional area on northern South America. Centromochlus meridionalis, new species, is described from headwaters of rio Teles Pires, contributor of rio Tapajós, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, and represents one of the southernmost records of a centromochlin catfish for Meridional Amazon rivers. Centromochlus meridionalis is promptly distinguished from its congeners by the small orbital diameter (relative to head length), and also by the combination of absence of first nuchal plate, anterior margin of dorsal-fin spine smooth, six branched rays in anal fin, seven pairs of ribs and 34 vertebrae. They are small sized catfishes with adults between 33 to 61 mm in standard length. The modified male anal fin is conspicuous, with the third unbranched ray enlarged, about twice the width of first unbranched ray. The new species inhabits a region strongly endangered by environmental changes due to expansion of agropecuary activities on Brazilian Amazon, which include this species in an uncertain situation regarding the conservation status of its natural population. Centromochlus abriga atualmente onze espécies, sendo o gênero mais problemático dentre os Centromochlinae, incluindo táxons morfologicamente heterogêneos. As espécies de Centromochlus apresentam uma ampla área de distribuição no norte da América do Sul. Centromochlus meridionalis, espécie nova, é descrita para as cabeceiras do rio Teles Pires, formador do rio Tapajós, Mato Grosso, Brasil, e representa um dos registros mais ao sul de um bagre centromoclíneo para os riachos da Amazônia meridional. Centromochlus meridionalis é prontamente distinguido de todos os seus congêneres, pelo diâmetro orbital pequeno (em relação ao comprimento da cabeça), e ainda pela combinação da ausência de primeira placa nucal, margem anterior do espinho da nadadeira dorsal lisa, seis raios ramificados na nadadeira anal, sete pares de costelas e 34 vértebras. São bagres de pequeno porte com adultos entre 33 e 61 mm de comprimento padrão. A nadadeira anal de machos sexualmente maduros é conspicuamente modificada, na qual o terceiro raio indiviso é muito largo, cerca do dobro da espessura do primeiro raio ramificado. O registro desta espécie nova ocorre em uma região fortemente ameaçada por alterações ambientais decorrentes da expansão de atividades agropecuárias na Amazônia Brasileira, a qual coloca esta espécie em uma situação incerta quanto ao estado de conservação da sua população natural.

The weakly electric fish from the main channel of the Amazon river, Sternarchogiton nattereri, offers a striking case of morphological variation. Females and most males are toothless, or present only few minute teeth on the mandible, whereas some males exhibit exaggerated, spike-like teeth that project externally from the snout and chin. Androgens are known to influence the expression of sexually dimorphic traits, and might be involved in tooth emergence. In this study we assess the relationship in S. nattereri between morphological variation, 11 ketotestosterone (11-KT) and testosterone (T). We also examine relationships of morphology and androgen levels with electric organ discharge (EOD) frequency, reproductive condition, and seasonality. Our main finding is that male morph categories differed significantly in plasma concentrations of 11-KT, with toothed males showing higher levels of 11-KT than toothless males. By contrast, we did not detect statistical differences in T levels among male morph categories. Reproductive condition, as measured by gonadosomatic indexes (GSI), differed across two sample years, increased as the season progressed, and was higher in toothed males than in non-toothed males. EOD frequency was higher in toothed males than in either toothless males or females. Taken together, our findings suggest that S. nattereri male sexual characters are regulated by 11-KT levels, and that both morphology and androgens interact with reproductive condition and EOD frequency in ways that vary within and across reproductive seasons.
