1. Flux Synthesis of A‐site Disordered Perovskite La0.5M0.5TiO3 (M═Li, Na, K) Nanorods Tailored for Solid Composite Electrolytes

Abstract

Abstract Inorganic fillers play an important role in improving the ionic conductivity of solid composite electrolytes (SCEs) for Li‐ion batteries. Among inorganic fillers, perovskite‐type lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO) stands out for its high bulk Li+ conductivity on the order of 10−3 S cm−1 at room temperature. According to a literature survey, the optimal LLTO filler should possess the following characteristics: i) a single‐crystal structure to minimize grain boundaries; ii) a small particle size to increase the filler/polymer interface area; iii) a 1D morphology for efficient interface channels; and iv) cubic symmetry to facilitate rapid bulk Li+ diffusion within the filler. However, the synthesis of single crystal, 1D LLTO nanomaterials with cubic symmetry is challenging. Herein, a flux strategy is developed to synthesize La0.5M0.5TiO3 (LMTO, M═Li, Na, and K) single‐crystal nanorods with an A‐site‐disordered, cubic perovskite phase. The flux media promotes the oriented growth of nanorods, prevents nanorods from sintering, and provides multiple alkali metal ion doping at M sites to stabilize the cubic phase. SCEs compositing the Li+‐conducting LMTO nanorods as fillers and poly[vinylene carbonate‐co‐lithium sulfonyl(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide methacrylate] matrix exhibit more than twice the conductivity of the neat polymer electrolyte (30.6 vs 14.0 µS cm−1 at 303 K).

Abstract

Abstract Materials keeping thickness in atomic scale but extending primarily in lateral dimensions offer properties attractive for many emerging applications. However, compared to crystalline counterparts, synthesis of atomically thin films in the highly disordered amorphous form, which avoids nonuniformity and defects associated with grain boundaries, is challenging due to their metastable nature. Here we present a scalable and solution-based strategy to prepare large-area, freestanding quasi-2D amorphous carbon nanomembranes with predominant sp2 bonding and thickness down to 1–2 atomic layers, from coal-derived carbon dots as precursors. These atomically thin amorphous carbon films are mechanically strong with modulus of 400 ± 100 GPa and demonstrate robust dielectric properties with high dielectric strength above 20 MV cm−1 and low leakage current density below 10−4 A cm−2 through a scaled thickness of three-atomic layers. They can be implemented as solution-deposited ultrathin gate dielectrics in transistors or ion-transport media in memristors, enabling exceptional device performance and spatiotemporal uniformity.

Abstract

Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study deformation-induced face-centered cubic (fcc) to body-centered cubic (bcc) transformation during uniaxial compression of an 80Fe-20Ni (at%) alloy with and without precipitates. Our purpose was to better understand recent experimental results in an Fe-Ni-based medium-entropy alloy where certain precipitates were found to constrain the fcc to bcc transformation. We find that larger precipitates and smaller spacings between precipitates hinder the phase transformation by impeding relaxation of internal elastic strains. These results deconvolute the individual effects of precipitate size and spacing and help interpret the experimental results where only their combined effects could be measured.

Abstract

Single and few-layers MoS2 were uniformly grown on the surface of chemically reduced graphene oxide (r-GO), via a facile liquid phase approach. The method is based on a simple functionalization of r-GO with oleyl amine which seems to affect significantly the MoS2 way of growth. Scanning-transmission-electron microscopy (STEM) analysis revealed the presence of single-layer MoS2 on the surface of a few-layers r-GO. This result was also confirmed by atomic-force microscopy (AFM) images. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy were used for in-depth structural characterization. Furthermore, we have successfully applied the method to synthesize MoS2 nanocomposites with multi wall carbon nanotubes (CN) and carbon nanofibers (CNF). The results demonstrate clearly the selective MoS2 growth on both carbon-based supports.

5. (Invited) High Entropy Multication Oxide Battery Materials

Abstract

High entropy oxides (HEOs), in which multication occupation of a single crystallographic site plays an important role in the properties, have become relevant in energy storage [1,2], catalysis [3.4], and many more areas. In a subset of these compounds the entropy, rather than enthalpy, plays a dominant role in stabilizing a single-phase structure at high temperatures. In other cases, the multication occupation merely contributes to stability and properties, but the entropy remains dominant in the stability. The field originated with high entropy metal alloys (HEAs)[5], and then expanded to oxides, borides, sulfides, and more. In the case of HEOs, the first example is the rock salt (Mg0.2Ni0.2Co0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2)O, which has generated a great deal of interest in this class of materials.[6,7] It has been shown that HEOs are of interest for high ionic conductivity and electrochemical energy storage. We have examined the electrochemical performance of new high entropy elecrolytes and found an effect of composition on the cycling performance. Samples were prepared through sol-gel routes and high energy milling of starting binary oxides. We have investigated the synthesis using high temperature in-situ X-ray diffraction on a Panalytical diffractometer equipped with an XRK900 stage. STEM/EDS studies on ex-situ samples will be presented that show elemental distribution, with Raman and EIS measurements providing information on ionic diffusion. Abstract

High nickel content layered oxide LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) is a promising cathode material with a high theoretical capacity of 200 mAh g−1 for use in high energy density lithium-ion batteries. However, its surface can easily get passivated by LiOH and Li2CO3 due to its surface residual Li2O being reacting with ambient moisture and CO2. Herein, NMC811 was treated in a 3.0 M solution of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) at 60 °C for 8 h, 16 h and 24 h, respectively, resulting in coating of the NMC811 surface with LiF due to the basic nature of those residual lithium salts that react with LiFSI. The facile treatment of NMC811 in LiFSI/DMC not only improves the cycling stability but also enhances the capacity of the Li/NMC811 cells, mainly because of the thinning of the Li2CO3 layer as suggested by cyclic voltammograms and impedance analyses. This method opens a new avenue for activation of passivated NMC811 particles for practical battery applications.

8. New Electrolyte Additives for High Voltage Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract

The degradation of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with cycling results from reactions of electrolyte at both anode and cathode, leading to increased cell impedance from continual formation of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs). One of the economic ways to improve battery cycling performance is to utilize sacrificial additives that could form thin and stable SEIs to prevent continual electrolyte reactions at both electrodes. In this presentation, three trimethylsilyl based malonate esters have been used as additives in 1.0 M LiPF6/ethylene carbonate (EC)-dimethyl carbonate (DMC)-diethyl carbonate (DEC) (1-1-1, by v) baseline electrolyte for LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) based high voltage lithium ion batteries. The NCA half-cells with 5 wt.% additive exhibit higher capacity retention than that in the baseline electrolyte at different upper cut off voltages, that is, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4 and 4.5 V vs. Li/Li+. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) show that the additive successfully prevents the formation of thick solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) films on the surface of the NCA electrodes. X-ray diffraction (XRD) further reveals that the crystal structure of NCA is also maintained in the electrolyte with 5 wt.% additive at high cut off voltages. Besides beneficial to NCA cathode, the BTMSMFM additive also ensures better cycling performance of the graphite based half-cells and NCA/graphite full-cells, and thus is a promising additive for application in rechargeable lithium ion batteries.

9. Dimensionality Controlled Octahedral Symmetry-Mismatch and Functionalities in Epitaxial LaCoO₃/SrTiO₃ Heterostructures

Abstract

Epitaxial strain provides a powerful approach to manipulate physical properties of materials through rigid compression or extension of their chemical bonds via lattice-mismatch. Although symmetry-mismatch can lead to new physics by stabilizing novel interfacial structures, challenges in obtaining atomic-level structural information as well as lack of a suitable approach to separate it from the parasitical lattice-mismatch have limited the development of this field. Here, we present unambiguous experimental evidence that the symmetry-mismatch can be strongly controlled by dimensionality and significantly impact the collective electronic and magnetic functionalities in ultrathin perovskite LaCoO3/SrTiO3 heterojunctions. State-of-art diffraction and microscopy reveal that symmetry breaking dramatically modifies the interfacial structure of CoO6 octahedral building-blocks, resulting in expanded octahedron volume, reduced covalent screening, and stronger electron correlations. Such phenomena fundamentally alter the electronic and magnetic behaviors of LaCoO3 thin-films. We conclude that for epitaxial systems, correlation strength can be tuned by changing orbital hybridization, thus affecting the Coulomb repulsion, U, instead of by changing the band structure as the common paradigm in bulks. These results clarify the origin of magnetic ordering for epitaxial LaCoO3 and provide a route to manipulate electron correlation and magnetic functionality by orbital engineering at oxide heterojunctions.

Abstract

High-resolution aberration-corrected electron microscopy was performed on a series of catalysts derived from a parent material, 2 at.% Au/Fe2O3 (WGC ref. no. 60C), prepared by co-precipitation and calcined in air at 400°C, and a catalyst prepared by leaching surface gold from the parent catalyst and exposed to various treatments, including use in the water–gas shift reaction at 250°C. Aberration-corrected JEOL 2200FS (JEOL USA, Peabody, MA) and Vacuum Generators HB-603U STEM instruments were used to image fresh, reduced, leached, used and re-oxidized catalyst samples. A new in situ heating technology (Protochips Inc., Raleigh, NC, USA), which permits full sub-Ångström imaging resolution in the JEOL 2200FS was used to study the effects of temperature on the behavior of gold species. A remarkable stability of gold to redox treatments up to 400°C, with atomic gold decorating step surfaces of iron oxide was identified. On heating the samples in vacuum to 700°C, it was found that monodispersed gold began to sinter to form nanoparticles above 500°C. Gold species internal to the iron oxide support material was shown to diffuse to the surface at elevated temperature, coalescing into discrete nanocrystals. The results demonstrate the value of in situ heating for understanding morphological changes in the catalyst with elevated temperature treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
