Abstract

INTRODUCION: La enfermedad aterosclerótica es una enorme carga para la salud en todo el mundo, y su prevención está basada en gran medida en el control de los factores de riesgo tradicionales, a pesar de la eficacia limitada en la prevención de eventos cardiovascular (ECV). La mejoría en la estratificación del riesgo se puede lograr a través de la detección de progresión del área total de la placa (TPA) medida por ecografía carotidea, la cual ha demostrado duplicación del riesgo basal en estos pacientes en un intervalo de 1 año. Nuestra hipótesis es que el control de la presión arterial y el colesterol LDL sérico en valores objetivo (según guías clínicas actuales) son insuficientes para reducir la progresión de la aterosclerosis en personas sin eventos previos, con alto riesgo cardiovascular. METODOS Y RESULTADOS: Estudio observacional prospectivo de 742 participantes con alto riesgo cardiovascular en un programa de prevención primaria cardiovascular. Se determinaron dos mediciones de ultrasonido de TPA para cada participante durante al menos un año. Incluimos en el análisis 57 participantes que mantuvieron una presión arterial por debajo de 130/80 mmHg y un colesterol sérico de lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL-C) por debajo de 100 mg/dl durante todo un año. Los participantes con progresión de la placa de TPA definida como aumento sobre el basal mayor de 5 mm2 se compararon con aquellos con cambios de TPA de 5 mm2 o menos (grupo sin progresión) mediante análisis de regresión logística multivariable. Después de una media de estadía en programa de casi 8 años, con Presión Arterial de 120.4 + 9/68.6 + 8 mmHg y LDL colesterol de 81 + 25 mg/dl, identificamos progresión de TPA en 22 de 57 (39%) participantes. No detectándose diferencias para ninguna covariable al comparar progresión versus no progresión. CONCLUSIÓN: La progresión de TPA ocurre hasta en el 39% de los individuos a pesar de mantener la presión arterial por debajo de 130/80 y el LDL-C sérico por debajo de 100 mg/dl. La evaluación de TPA puede ayudar a resolver las limitaciones de las pautas establecidas para la prevención de eventos de ECV en personas de alto riesgo.

3. Explaining the longitudinal interplay of personality and social relationships in the laboratory and in the field: The PILS and the CONNECT study.

Abstract

Our personalities (who we are) influence our social relationships (how we relate to people around us), and our social relationships influence our personalities. However, little is known about the specific processes underlying the complex interplay of personality and social relationships. According to the PERSOC framework, the identification of underlying social interaction processes promotes the understanding of how personality and social relationships are expressed, develop, and influence each other over time. The aim of the present paper is twofold: First, we outline and discuss four methodological challenges that arise when trying to empirically realize a process approach to the personality-relationship interplay. Second, we describe two data sets that are designed to meet these challenges and that are open for collaborative investigations: a laboratory-based process approach (Personality Interaction Laboratory Study; PILS) and a field-based process approach (CONNECT). We provide detailed information on the samples (two student samples; PILS: N = 311; CONNECT: N = 131), procedures (longitudinal and multimethodological), and measures (personality and social relationships, appearance and behavior, interpersonal perceptions), for which we present descriptive information, reliabilities, and intercorrelations. We summarize how these studies' designs targeted the introduced methodological challenges, discuss the advantages and limitations of laboratory- and field-based process approaches, and call for their combination. We close by outlining an open research policy, aimed at accelerated collaborative efforts to further open the process black box, ultimately leading to a better understanding of the expression, development, and complex interplay of personality and social relationships.

Abstract

The optimization of high frequency giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect and its magnetic field sensitivity in melt-extracted Co69.25Fe4.25Si13B12.5Nb1 amorphous microwires, through a multi-step Joule annealing (MSA) technique, was systematically studied. The surface morphology, microstructure, surface magnetic property, and high frequency GMI response of the Co-rich microwires were explored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and impedance analyzer, respectively. An initial dc current (idc) of 20 mA, which was then increased by 20 mA at every time-step (10 min) up to 300 mA, was applied to the microwires. The MSA of 20 mA to 100 mA remarkably improved the GMI ratio and its field sensitivity up to 760% (1.75 time of that of the as-prepared), and 925%/Oe (more than 17.92 times of that of the as-prepared) at an operating frequency of 20 MHz, respectively. Our study indicates that the MSA technique can enhance the microstructures and the surface magnetic domain structures of the Co-rich magnetic microwires, giving rise to the GMI enhancement. This technique is suitable for improving the GMI sensitivity at small magnetic fields, which is highly promising for biomedical sensing and healthcare monitoring.

6. Rosuvastatin reduces neointima formation in a rat model of balloon injury

Abstract

Abstract Background Processes of restenosis, following arterial injury, are complex involving different cell types producing various cytokines and enzymes. Among those enzymes, smooth muscle cell-derived matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are thought to take part in cell migration, degrading of extracellular matrix, and neointima formation. MMP-9, also known as gelatinase B, is expressed immediately after vascular injury and its expression and activity can be inhibited by statins. Using an established in vivo model of vascular injury, we investigated the effect of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor rosuvastatin on MMP-9 expression and neointima formation. Materials and methods 14-week old male Sprague Dawley rats underwent balloon injury of the common carotid artery. Half of the animals received rosuvastatin (20 mg/kg body weight/day) via oral gavage, beginning 3 days prior to injury. Gelatinase activity and neointima formation were analyzed 3 days and 14 days after balloon injury, respectively. 14 days after vascular injury, proliferative activity was assessed by staining for Ki67. Results After 14 days, animals in the rosuvastatin group showed a decrease in total neointima formation (0.194 ± 0.01 mm2 versus 0.124 ± 0.02 mm2, p < 0.05) as well as a reduced intima/media ratio (1.26 ± 0.1 versus 0.75 ± 0.09, p < 0.05). Balloon injury resulted in increased activity of MMP-9 3 days after intervention for both rosuvastatin treated animals and controls with no significant difference observed between the groups. There was a trend towards a reduction in the number of Ki67-positive cells 14 days after injury. Conclusions Rosuvastatin attenuates neointima formation without affecting early MMP-9 activity in a rat model of vascular injury.

Abstract

We present a systematic study of transport and thermodynamic properties of the Laves phase system Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$. Our measurements confirm that Fe-rich samples, as well as those rich in Nb (for $\mid y\mid\geq 0.02$), show bulk ferromagnetism at low temperature. For stoichiometric NbFe$_2$, on the other hand, magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and magnetoresistance results point towards spin-density wave (SDW) order, possibly helical, with a small ordering wavevector $Q \sim 0.05$ \AA$^{-1}$. Our results suggest that on approaching the stoichiometric composition from the iron-rich side, ferromagnetism changes into long-wavelength SDW order. In this scenario, $Q$ changes continuously from 0 to small, finite values at a Lifshitz point in the phase diagram, which is located near $y=+0.02$. Further reducing the Fe content suppresses the SDW transition temperature, which extrapolates to zero at $y\approx -0.015$. Around this Fe content magnetic fluctuations dominate the temperature dependence of the resistivity and of the heat capacity which deviate from their conventional Fermi liquid forms, inferring the presence of a quantum critical point. Because the critical point is located between the SDW phase associated with stoichiometric NbFe$_2$ and the ferromagnetic order which reemerges for very Nb-rich NbFe$_2$, the observed temperature dependences could be attributed both to proximity to SDW order or to ferromagnetism., Comment: 13 pages, 20 figures

Abstract

Bei der Erfassung persönlichkeitsrelevanter Eigenschaften kommen evaluativ negativere Dispositionen oft zu kurz. Diese sind jedoch besonders in interpersonellen Situationen wichtig. Die „Dunkle Triade”, bestehend aus Narzissmus, Psychopathie und Machiavellismus bietet die Möglichkeit diese verwandten Konstrukte und ihre Effekte spezifisch zu untersuchen. Im deutschen Sprachraum werden derzeit drei separate und umfangreiche Instrumente zu deren Messung benötigt. In drei Studien (N = 501; N = 828; N = 96) wird die Validierung einer deutschen Version (das „Dreckige Dutzend”) der „Dirty Dozen”-Kurzskalen (Jonason & Webster, 2010), sowie eine psychometrisch optimierte Version (die „Niederträchtigen Neun”) zur Erfassung der Kernaspekte der Dunklen Triade vorgestellt. Die vier bzw. drei Items umfassenden Skalen beider Instrumente weisen eine gute Struktur, interne Konsistenz und Stabilität auf. Darüber hinaus zeigen die Skalen zufriedenstellende konvergente Beziehungen zu den Standardverfahren der Dunklen Triade, differenzierte Zusammenhänge mit weiteren relevanten Persönlichkeitskonstrukten (z.?B. Big Five-Facetten, Aggressivität, Soziosexualität) und prädizieren charakteristische Verhaltensweisen. Implikationen für die Erfassung der Dunklen Triade in Forschungs- und Anwendungskontexten werden diskutiert.

Abstract

We investigated the magnetotransport properties of high-mobility InAs/GaSb antidot lattices. In addition to the usual commensurability features at low magnetic field we found a broad maximum of classical origin around 2.5 T. The latter can be ascribed to a class of rosetta type orbits encircling a single antidot. This is shown by both a simple transport calculation based on a classical Kubo formula and an analysis of the Poincare surface of section at different magnetic field values. Abstract

Age and gender differences in narcissism have been studied often. However, considering the rich history of narcissism research accompanied by its diverging conceptualizations, little is known about age and gender differences across various narcissism measures. The present study investigated age and gender differences and their interactions across eight widely used narcissism instruments (i.e., Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale, Dirty Dozen, Psychological Entitlement Scale, Narcissistic Personality Disorder Symptoms from the , Version IV, Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire-Short Form, Single-Item Narcissism Scale, and brief version of the Pathological Narcissism Inventory). The findings of Study 1 (N = 5,736) revealed heterogeneity in how strongly the measures are correlated. Some instruments loaded clearly on one of the three factors proposed by previous research (i.e., Neuroticism, Extraversion, Antagonism), while others cross-loaded across factors and in distinct ways. Cross-sectional analyses using each measure and meta-analytic results across all measures (Study 2) with a total sample of 270,029 participants suggest consistent linear age effects (random effects meta-analytic effect of r = -.104), with narcissism being highest in young adulthood. Consistent gender differences also emerged (random effects meta-analytic effect was -.079), such that men scored higher in narcissism than women. Quadratic age effects and Age × Gender effects were generally very small and inconsistent. We conclude that despite the various conceptualizations of narcissism, age and gender differences are generalizable across the eight measures used in the present study. However, their size varied based on the instrument used. We discuss the sources of this heterogeneity and the potential mechanisms for age and gender differences.

Abstract

Bounding the load capacitance at gate outputs is a standard element in today's electrical correctness methodologies for high-speed digital very large scale integration design. Bounds on load caps improve coupling-noise immunity, reduce degradation of signal transition edges, and reduce delay uncertainty due to coupling noise (Kahng et al. 1998). For clock and test distribution, an additional design requirement is bounding the buffer skew, i.e., the difference between the maximum and the minimum number of buffers over all of the source-to-sink paths in the routing tree, since buffer skew is one of the main factors affecting delay skew (Tellez and Sarrafzadeh 1997). In this paper, we consider algorithms for buffering a given tree with the minimum number of buffers under given load cap and buffer skew constraints. We show that the greedy algorithm proposed by Tellez and Sarrafzadeh is suboptimal for nonzero buffer-skew bounds and give examples showing that no bottom-up greedy algorithm can achieve optimality. The main contribution of the paper is an optimal dynamic programming algorithm for the problem. Experiments on test cases extracted from recent industrial designs show that the dynamic programming algorithm has practical running time and saves up to 37.5% of the buffers inserted by Tellez and Sarrafzadeh's algorithm.

Abstract

SND@LHC is a compact and stand-alone experiment designed to perform measurements with neutrinos produced at the LHC in the pseudo-rapidity region of ${7.2 < \eta < 8.4}$. The experiment is located 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point, in the TI18 tunnel. The detector is composed of a hybrid system based on an 830 kg target made of tungsten plates, interleaved with emulsion and electronic trackers, also acting as an electromagnetic calorimeter, and followed by a hadronic calorimeter and a muon identification system. The detector is able to distinguish interactions of all three neutrino flavours, which allows probing the physics of heavy flavour production at the LHC in the very forward region. This region is of particular interest for future circular colliders and for very high energy astrophysical neutrino experiments. The detector is also able to search for the scattering of Feebly Interacting Particles. In its first phase, the detector will operate throughout LHC Run 3 and collect a total of 250 $\text{fb}^{-1}$., Comment: 57 pages. To be published in JINST

Abstract

Narcissists successfully emerge as leaders. However, the processes by which this occurs are mostly unknown. Following a dual-pathway approach and differentiating between agentic (narcissistic admiration) and antagonistic (narcissistic rivalry) narcissism, we investigated the behavioral processes underlying narcissists' leadership emergence in social groups. We applied data from a multimethodological laboratory study (N = 311) comprising three groups of variables: personality traits, expressed interaction behaviors, and interpersonal perceptions. Prior to the laboratory sessions, participants provided self-reported answers to various narcissism measures. Interpersonal perceptions were obtained from round-robin ratings after participants completed the Lost on the Moon task in small groups. Participants' behaviors during the group discussion were videotaped and coded by trained raters. Results supported the notion of a pathway from agentic narcissism to leadership (measured as target effects of being seen as a leader) determined by narcissistic admiration, dominant-expressive behavior, and being seen as assertive. To clarify narcissism's relationship to leadership emergence, the effects were (a) contrasted with narcissism's effects on popularity and (b) set in relation to process pathways leading from intelligence and physical attractiveness to leadership. The findings underscore the benefits of a behavioral pathway approach for unravelling the impact of narcissism on leadership emergence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
