13. Ozone as a disinfectant in laboratory surfaces against the SARS-cov-2 coronavirus

Abstract

Introduction: The treatment of surfaces with ozone has become important due to the ease of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to reach places where it is not normally disinfected with chemical treatments. Ozone can be supplied from two sources: ozone generators and electrostatic air purifiers, both of which leave no residues that damage the environment. Ozone is highly effective against bacteria, fungi, mold, and virus inactivation. The objective of this work was to investigate the disinfection of surfaces naturally contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 and bacteria by using ozone plasma. Material and methods: We examined the disinfection capacity of ozone plasma against the SARS-CoV-2 and bacteria, through a study of natural contamination in situ. Amplification of specific genes by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction of SARS-CoV-2 and microbiological culture of bacteria was performed before and after the disinfection process. Results: SARS-CoV-2 was not detected in all assays; bacteria were not cultivable after disinfection with ozone plasma. Conclusion: Disinfection with ozone plasma technology can be an alternative for their use in a shortage situation of others disinfects. Implications for the use of disinfection technologies of surfaces lab’s and the safety of laboratory personnel are discussed.

Abstract

Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile organic substances obtained from medicinal plants, their structural diversity determines their pharmacological bioactivity, including their therapeutic applications. Clinical studies have reported favorable health benefits to patients using medicinal plants for ulcerative skin lesions, reducing the discomfort, pain, and duration of ulcers. Chitosan (CHT) is a polymer with potential as a drug carrier in ulcer disease; also has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and hemostatic properties, proposed for its use in gels, biofilms, and sponges to cover the ulcerative lesion in the oral mucosa for both drug delivery and physical protection. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biological properties and enzymatic activity of sponges from CHT and Oregano essential oil (OEs). CHT sponges were incubated in OEs eluates (0.01, 0.02 and 0.03 mg/mL). The cell response and enzymatic activity of Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD) and Catalase (CAT) were evaluated in human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (hPLFs). The results showed that CHT-OEs at 0.02 mg/mL and at 0.03 mg/mL significantly increased hPLFs proliferation (p < 0.05). Micrographs demonstrated that the viability and mitochondrial activity of hPLFs were not affected by the eluates from CHT and OEs. SOD activity increased with eluates from OEs and CHT and CAT was significantly increased with CHT+OEs 0.01 mg/mL (p < 0.05). The synergy of CHT with OEs at a concentration of 0.02 mg/mL and 0.03 mg/mL in culture medium increases the proliferative response and stimulates SOD and CAT activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Scaffolds have proven to be an excellent option for the regeneration of bone tissues; since they present excellent results of architecture, composition, and functionality. Therefore, scaffolds can be used as implants to repair bones and show guided regeneration, allowing complete restructuring of damaged tissue, as well as allowing the site where the implant is located to have functionality. In the present investigation, three different beta-phase tricalcium phosphate/zirconia-reinforced phosphate-based bioactive glass compositions were evaluated: V1, VZ0.5, and VZ1.0 (0, 0.5, and 1mol%). All scaffolds showed excellent bioactivity and osteoconductivity results. They were forming HA crystalline aggregates with the typical cauliflower morphology in vitrostudies in simulated body fluid and with human osteoblasts (MG-63).

Abstract

The storage and acquisition of human tissue samples have always been present in medicine for centuries; however, biobanks activity has only recently appeared as such. The aim of this review is to give a global perspective of the positioning of biobanks, particularly an overview of what happens in Mexico. One of the main challenges of our country is to establish concerted actions, in wich biobank networks will be developed and have the opportunity to share and create new science, and to build bridges to facilitate improved practices and standardization of biobanks.
