Active learning methods are needed to promote student motivation and facilitate the development of technical and soft skills. Previous research in software engineering education shows that LEGO® Serious Play (LSP) fully aligns with these needs. However, prior works are usually based on insufficiently robust research methods that do not include a large sample, a variety of evaluation instruments, and/or rigorous comparative methods such as randomized controlled trials, which makes it difficult to obtain reliable and solid conclusions. This article presents an original LSP activity to teach software development life cycle models and core software engineering activities, tackling learning objectives different from those addressed by the LSP activities reported in prior works. The LSP activity was validated through a cluster-randomized controlled trial involving 217 computer science students. These students were divided into a control group that received a traditional lecture and an experimental group that performed the LSP activity. The research was supported by pre and post-tests that allowed the study of the knowledge attained by the students, as well as a questionnaire to gather students’ perceptions. The results indicate that the students in the experimental group learned significantly more and were more motivated than their counterparts in the control group. This leads to the conclusion that LSP-based activities such as the one reported in this article are highly effective in terms of knowledge acquisition and motivation to teach some software engineering topics compared to traditional lectures.

Significant research work has been undertaken related to the game-based learning approach over the last years. However, a closer look at this work reveals that further research is needed to examine some types of game-based learning approaches such as virtual reality serious games and LEGO Serious Play. This article examines and compares the effectiveness for learning Scrum and related agile practices of a serious game based on virtual reality and a learning activity based on the LEGO Serious Play methodology. The presented study used a quasi-experimental design with two groups, pre- and post-tests, and a perceptions questionnaire. The sample was composed of 59 software engineering students, 22 of which belonged to group A, while the other 37 were part of group B. The students in group A played the virtual reality serious game, whereas the students in group B conducted the LEGO Serious Play activity. The results show that both game-based learning approaches were effective for learning Scrum and related agile practices in terms of learning performance and motivation, but they also show that the students who played the virtual reality serious game outperformed their peers from the other group in terms of learning performance.

Contribution: This article analyzes the learning effectiveness of a virtual educational escape room for teaching software engineering and compares this activity with traditional teaching through a randomized controlled trial. Background: Educational escape rooms have been used across a wide variety of disciplines at all levels of education and they are becoming increasingly popular among teachers. Nevertheless, there is a clear general need for more robust empirical evidence on the learning effectiveness of these novel activities and, particularly, on their application in software engineering education. Research Questions: Is game-based learning using educational escape rooms more effective than traditional lectures for teaching software engineering? What are the perceptions of software engineering students toward game-based learning using educational escape rooms? Methodology: The study presented in this article is a randomized controlled trial with a pre- and post-test design that was completed by a total of 326 software engineering students. The 164 students belonging to the experimental group learned software modeling by playing an educational escape room whereas the 162 students belonging to the control group learned the same subject matter through a traditional lecture. Findings: The results of the randomized controlled trial show that the students who learned software modeling through the educational escape room had very positive perceptions toward this activity, significantly increased their knowledge, and outperformed those students who learned through a traditional lecture in terms of knowledge acquisition.

Nowadays, it is mandatory to complement the traditional learning methods with active ones that enhance the student’s motivation and facilitate the development of technical and soft competences. LEGO®Serious Play is an experiential methodology designed to enhance innovation and performance in the business world and it is fully aligned with these needs. Previous researches show that this methodology has great potential in engineering education, and specifically in software engineering education. This paper presents an original LEGO®Serious Play activity to teach in a playful and active way software engineering concepts such as life cycle models and software development activities, which can be extrapolated to other engineering fields. This activity was validated through a case study involving 242 computer science students and it was supported by quantitative and qualitative data gathered from a survey and a post-test. The results indicate that the students found this activity highly fun and motivating as well as very useful to learn about the addressed topics and develop soft skills.

Existing literature has provided strong evidence that educational escape rooms are engaging and effective learning activities when they are properly conducted in the classroom. However, no prior research has determined whether the positive effects of these novel educational activities on students’ perceptions and learning persist when conducted remotely. This article performs, for the first time, a comparative study of the effectiveness of face-to-face and remote educational escape rooms. For this purpose, two versions of the same educational escape room were conducted: one in-class and one remotely. Both experiences were evaluated by means of three different instruments: (1) a pre-test and a post-test for measuring learning gains, (2) a questionnaire for assessing students’ perceptions, and (3) a web platform for recording student interaction data during the activities. The results obtained suggest that, although remote educational escape rooms for learning programming can be as engaging as their face-to-face counterparts, their learning effectiveness is somewhat lower.

Educational escape rooms are emerging as a new type of learning activity with the potential to enhance students’ learning through highly engaging experiences. However, conducting educational escape rooms effectively is very complex and there are no software tools available for this purpose. This lack of support is hindering the widespread use and adoption of these activities. This article presents Escapp, a web platform that allows teachers to conduct effective and highly engaging educational escape rooms. The platform has been used for conducting three different educational escape rooms (one face-to-face and two remotely) in three higher education settings. Three case studies were conducted to empirically evaluate the usefulness of Escapp for conducting these activities, which involved more than 400 students. On the one hand, a questionnaire was administered to students to gather their opinions on the Escapp platform, obtaining very positive results in terms of overall usefulness, usability and engagement. On the other hand, data automatically recorded by Escapp during the three educational escape rooms are presented as evidence of the high number of student interactions that take place during activities of this kind and the need of using a software system for conducting them in an effective way. The results of this article show that Escapp is a well-suited solution for conducting effective face-to-face and remote educational escape rooms.

Previous research on game-based learning has provided firm empirical evidence that playing educational video games can positively impact students’ motivation and learning outcomes at all levels of education and disciplines. However, the use and uptake of game-based learning in educational settings is being hampered by the lack of authoring tools capable of allowing teachers to easily create educational video games and adapt them according to their needs and contexts of use. Moreover, in order to determine to which extent this kind of tools are useful for teachers to conduct effective game-based learning experiences, further research is required to evaluate these tools from the teachers’ perspective, as well as to evaluate the instructional effectiveness of the educational video games that teachers can create by using them. This article contributes to fill this research gap by presenting a teacher-oriented authoring tool for educational games called SGAME, as well as by examining the teachers’ perceptions toward this tool and the effect of the educational video games it allows to create on students’ perceptions and learning outcomes. A total of three evaluation instruments were used: a questionnaire to collect teachers’ perceptions toward the SGAME authoring tool, another questionnaire to collect students’ perceptions toward a game created with SGAME, and a pre-test and a post-test to measure the students’ learning gains achieved by playing this game. A total of 201 teachers and 79 students participated in the evaluation reported in this article. The results of this article show that SGAME is an easy-to-use authoring tool that allows teachers to create motivating and effective educational video games.

With the rise of distance learning, new challenges have emerged for educators. Among these challenges, developing effective and motivating group activities for students in the remote classroom is one of the top priorities to be addressed. According to existing literature, educational escape rooms have proven to be engaging and effective learning activities when conducted face-to-face. However, no prior research has analyzed the instructional effectiveness of these activities when they are conducted remotely. Furthermore, none of the educational escape rooms reported in the literature has been designed for teaching software modeling. This article analyzes an educational escape room conducted remotely in a software engineering fundamentals course for teaching software modeling. A total of three evaluation instruments were used: a pre-test and a post-test to measure students' learning gains, a questionnaire to collect students' perceptions, and a web platform for automatically gathering data on students' interactions. The contribution of this article is two-fold. On the one hand, it provides, for the first time, evidence that remote educational escape rooms can be effective learning activities. On the other hand, it provides, also for the first time, proof that educational escape rooms are effective and engaging activities for teaching software modeling.

In addition to being a well-liked form of recreation, escape rooms have drawn the attention of educators due to their ability to foster teamwork, leadership, creative thinking, and communication in a way that is engaging for students. As a consequence, educational escape rooms are emerging as a new type of learning activity under the promise of enhancing students' learning through highly engaging experiences. These activities consist of escape rooms that incorporate course materials within their puzzles in such a way that students are required to master these materials in order to succeed. Although several studies have reported on the use of escape rooms in a wide range of disciplines, prior research falls short of addressing the use of educational escape rooms for teaching programming, one of the most valuable skills of the twenty-first century that students often have difficulties grasping. This paper reports on the use of an educational escape room in a programming course at a higher education institution and provide, for the first time, insights on the instructional effectiveness of using educational escape rooms for teaching programming. The results of this paper show that appropriate use of educational escape rooms can have significant positive impacts on student engagement and learning in programming courses. These results also suggest that students prefer these activities over traditional computer laboratory sessions. Finally, another novel contribution of this paper is a set of recommendations and proposals for educators in order to help them create effective educational escape rooms for teaching programming.

Los recursos educativos abiertos se han erigido como uno de los pilares fundamentales de la educación abierta. Una de las principales barreras que está obstaculizando su uso y adopción es la carencia de mecanismos de control de calidad efectivos y sostenibles en los repositorios. Estrategias de evaluación como la revisión por pares no han resultado lo su®cientemente escalables para afrontar el ritmo de creación de materiales abiertos por parte de la comunidad. El presente estudio muestra una nueva estrategia basada en analíticas de aprendizaje para estimar la calidad de los objetos de aprendizaje en base a las interacciones que los estudiantes tienen con ellos en entornos abiertos. Se analizaron 146.291 sesiones de interacción de estudiantes con 256 objetos de aprendizaje distribuidos a través de un repositorio abierto. Un total de 11 interacciones estudiante-objeto de aprendizaje fueron consi- deradas en el estudio. La calidad de los recursos fue medida empleando el instrumento estándar de evaluación LORI (Learning Object Review Instru- ment). Para estudiar las relaciones entre las interacciones de los estudiantes con los objetos de aprendizaje y la calidad de los mismos y para construir una métrica de predicción se utilizaron análisis de regresión lineal. Los resulta- dos muestran que existe relación entre las interacciones y la calidad, y que es posible estimar con un error moderado la calidad de los objetos de apren- dizaje en base a las interacciones que los estudiantes tienen con ellos. Los resultados obtenidos señalan que la analítica de aprendizaje propuesta puede ser utilizada en repositorios de objetos de aprendizaje abiertos para detectar automáticamente recursos con ̄ictivos o de baja calidad.

Open educational resources (OER) can contribute to democratize education by providing effective learning experiences with lower costs. Nevertheless, the massive amount of resources currently available in OER repositories makes it difficult for teachers and learners to find relevant and high-quality content, which is hindering OER use and adoption. Recommender systems that use data related to the pedagogical quality of the OER can help to overcome this problem. However, studies analyzing the usefulness of these data for generating OER recommendations are very limited and inconclusive. This article examines the usefulness of using pedagogical quality scores for generating OER recommendations in OER repositories by means of a user study that compares the following four different recommendation approaches: a traditional content-based recommendation technique, a quality-based non-personalized recommendation technique, a hybrid approach that combines the two previous techniques, and random recommendations. This user study involved 53 participants and 400 OER whose quality was evaluated by reviewers using the Learning Object Review Instrument (LORI). The main finding of this study is that pedagogical quality scores can enhance traditional content-based OER recommender systems by allowing them to recommend OER with more quality without detriment to relevance.

Learning analytics methods have proven useful in providing insights from the increasingly available digital data about students in a variety of learning environments, including serious games. However, such methods have not been applied to the specific context of educational escape rooms and therefore little is known about students' behavior while playing. The present work aims to fill the gap in the existing literature by showcasing the power of learning analytics methods to reveal and represent students' behavior when participating in a computer-supported educational escape room. Specifically, we make use of sequence mining methods to analyze the temporal and sequential aspects of the activities carried out by students during these novel educational games. We further use clustering to identify different player profiles according to the sequential unfolding of students' actions and analyze how these profiles relate to knowledge acquisition. Our results show that students' behavior differed significantly in their use of hints in the escape room and resulted in differences in their knowledge acquisition levels.
