5. The curriculum prerequisite network: a tool for visualizing and analyzing academic curricula

Abstract

This article advances the prerequisite network as a means to visualize the hidden structure in an academic curriculum. Network technologies have been used for some time now in social analyses and more recently in biology in the areas of genomics and systems biology. Here I treat the curriculum as a complex system with nodes representing courses and links between nodes the course prerequisites as readily obtained from a course catalogue. The resulting curriculum prerequisite network can be rendered as a directed acyclic graph, which has certain desirable analytical features. The curriculum is seen as partitioned into numerous isolated course groupings, the size of the groups varying considerably. Individual courses are seen serving very different roles in the overall organization, such as information sources, hubs, and bridges. This network represents the intrinsic, hard-wired constraints on the flow of information in a curriculum, and is the organizational context within which learning occurs., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

9. The Curriculum Prerequisite Network: Modeling the Curriculum as a Complex System

Abstract

This article advances the prerequisite network as a means to visualize the hidden structure in an academic curriculum. Networks have been used to represent a variety of complex systems ranging from social systems to biochemical pathways and protein interactions. Here, I treat the academic curriculum as a complex system with nodes representing courses and links between nodes the course prerequisites as readily obtained from a course catalogue. I show that the catalogue data can be rendered as a directed acyclic graph, which has certain desirable analytical features. Using metrics developed in mathematical graph theory, I characterize the overall structure of the undergraduate curriculum of Benedictine University along with that of its Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program. The latter program is shown to contain hidden community structure that crosses disciplinary boundaries. The overall curriculum is seen as partitioned into numerous isolated course groupings, the size of the groups varying considerably. Individual courses serve different roles in the organization, such as information sources, hubs, and bridges. The curriculum prerequisite network represents the intrinsic, hard-wired constraints on the flow of information in a curriculum, and is the organizational context within which learning occurs. I explore some applications for advising and curriculum reform.

50. Olive Fruit Fly, Bactrocera oleae(Diptera: Tephritidae), Attraction to Volatile Compounds Produced by Host and Insect-Associated Yeast Strains

Abstract

The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae(Rossi), is one of the most damaging insect pests of olives worldwide, requiring the use of insecticides for fruit protection in many orchards. Olive fruit flies are attracted to volatile composunds, including a female-produced pheromone, and host-plant and bacterial volatiles. Preliminary laboratory bioassays were conducted for olive fruit fly attraction to over 130 yeast strains from among 400 that were isolated from B. oleaeadults and larvae or other insects, infested olives, and potential feeding sites. Kuraishia capsulata, Scheffersomyces ergatensis, Peterozyma xylosa, Wickerhamomyces subpelliculosus, and Lachancea thermotoleransappeared to attract B. oleaeas well or better than did torula yeast pellets (Cyberlindnera jadinii; syn. Candida utilis). Volatile compounds emitted by these yeast strains were chemically identified, and included isobutanol, isoamyl alcohol, 2-phenethyl alcohol, isobutyl acetate, and 2-phenethyl acetate. The behavioral response of B. oleaeadults to these volatile compounds at three concentrations was tested in a laboratory Y-tube olfactometer. The same volatile compounds were also tested in the field. Isoamyl alcohol was more attractive than the other compounds tested in both laboratory and field bioassays. Isobutanol was not attractive to B. oleaein either laboratory bioassay or field bioassay. Identifying yeast volatiles attractive to the olive fruit fly may lead to development of a more effective lure for detection, monitoring, and possibly control of B. oleae.
