The cause of the end-Cretaceous mass extinction is vigorously debated, owing to the occurrence of a very large bolide impact and flood basalt volcanism near the boundary. Disentangling their relative importance is complicated by uncertainty regarding kill mechanisms and the relative timing of volcanogenic outgassing, impact, and extinction. We used carbon cycle modeling and paleotemperature records to constrain the timing of volcanogenic outgassing. We found support for major outgassing beginning and ending distinctly before the impact, with only the impact coinciding with mass extinction and biologically amplified carbon cycle change. Our models show that these extinction-related carbon cycle changes would have allowed the ocean to absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide, thus limiting the global warming otherwise expected from postextinction volcanism.

Mass extinction at the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary coincides with the Chicxulub bolide impact and also falls within the broader time frame of Deccan trap emplacement. Critically, though, empirical evidence as to how either of these factors could have driven observed extinction patterns and carbon cycle perturbations is still lacking. Here, using boron isotopes in foraminifera, we document a geologically rapid surface-ocean pH drop following the Chicxulub impact, supporting impact-induced ocean acidification as a mechanism for ecological collapse in the marine realm. Subsequently, surface water pH rebounded sharply with the extinction of marine calcifiers and the associated imbalance in the global carbon cycle. Our reconstructed water-column pH gradients, combined with Earth system modeling, indicate that a partial ∼50% reduction in global marine primary productivity is sufficient to explain observed marine carbon isotope patterns at the K-Pg, due to the underlying action of the solubility pump. While primary productivity recovered within a few tens of thousands of years, inefficiency in carbon export to the deep sea lasted much longer. This phased recovery scenario reconciles competing hypotheses previously put forward to explain the K-Pg carbon isotope records, and explains both spatially variable patterns of change in marine productivity across the event and a lack of extinction at the deep sea floor. In sum, we provide insights into the drivers of the last mass extinction, the recovery of marine carbon cycling in a postextinction world, and the way in which marine life imprints its isotopic signal onto the geological record.

Deep-water benthic foraminifera are investigated from Paleocene to Eocene sediments recovered from IODP Hole U1511B in the northeastern Tasman Sea. The recovered foraminifera display exceptional three-dimensional preservation: they are relatively unaltered by sediment diagenesis and compaction.We examined 33 samples from Cores U1511B-33R to -42R, and recovered 79 species of deep-water agglutinated foraminifera (DWAF) and 13 species of calcareous benthic foraminifera. The assemblage consists entirely of "cosmopolitan" forms originally described from the Carpathians, Caucasus, Trinidad, and the western Tethys, and other DSDP/ODP sites, implying that there is little or no endemism among deep-water benthic faunas in the semi-isolated Tasman Sea. The Paleocene--Eocene interval is characterized by successive acmes of Spiroplectammina, Trochammina, ammodiscids, and Karrerulina, and therefore bears striking similarity to previously studied sections in the western Tethys and Boreal North Atlantic. The taxonomic turnover among the DWAF is minor across the P/E contact, with only three apparent extinctions and three originations from the uppermost cores of the Paleocene and the lowermost cores of the Eocene. Calcareous benthic foraminifera were not observed in the Eocene samples, possibly a result of the shoaling of the CCD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The response of the Earth system to greenhouse-gas-driven warming is of critical importance for the future trajectory of our planetary environment. Hyperthermal events - past climate transients with global-scale warming significantly above background climate variability - can provide insights into the nature and magnitude of these responses. The largest hyperthermal of the Cenozoic was the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM ∼ 56 Ma). Here we present new high-resolution bulk sediment stable isotope and major element data for the classic PETM section at Zumaia, Spain. With these data we provide a new detailed stratigraphic correlation to other key deep-ocean and terrestrial PETM reference sections. With this new correlation and age model we are able to demonstrate that detrital sediment accumulation rates within the Zumaia continental margin section increased more than 4-fold during the PETM, representing a radical change in regional hydrology that drove dramatic increases in terrestrial-to-marine sediment flux. Most remarkable is that detrital accumulation rates remain high throughout the body of the PETM, and even reach peak values during the recovery phase of the characteristic PETM carbon isotope excursion (CIE). Using a series of Earth system model inversions, driven by the new Zumaia carbon isotope record, we demonstrate that the silicate weathering feedback alone is insufficient to recover the PETM CIE, and that active organic carbon burial is required to match the observed dynamics of the CIE. Further, we demonstrate that the period of maximum organic carbon sequestration coincides with the peak in detrital accumulation rates observed at Zumaia. Based on these results, we hypothesise that orbital-scale variations in subtropical hydro-climates, and their subsequent impact on sediment dynamics, may contribute to the rapid climate and CIE recovery from peak-PETM conditions.

IODP Site U1509 (Expedition 371), New Caledonia Trough, provides a rare latest Cretaceous–Paleocene record from offshore northern Zealandia. We present new palynomorph and benthic foraminiferal assemblage data that show a transition from a latest Cretaceous vegetated sediment source region to a fully oceanic environment in the Paleocene. Latest Cretaceous (c. 68–66 Ma) non-calcareous claystone was deposited in upper bathyal paleodepths, with abundant plant microfossils that were likely transported in a northwest direction through the Aotea Basin region. A 2–3 Myr unconformity is identified at the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. Middle early–late Paleocene (c. 63.5–56 Ma) calcareous claystone shows evidence of deepening, deposited in middle bathyal or deeper paleodepths, and terrestrial input is minor. This latest Cretaceous to Paleocene deepening trend is consistent with inferred evolution of the Aotea and Northland basins further to the east, and other sparse northern Zealandia records, which show a common pattern of post-rift transgression consistent with long-term subsidence. Site U1509 allows for biogeographic extension and modification of the New Zealand Paleocene dinoflagellate zonation, description of a new dinoflagellate and pollen species, better inference of regional paleogeography, and may provide insights into the onset of western Pacific subduction initiation.
