This paper deals with the geometrically nonlinear analysis of submerged arches by means of memetic Coral Reefs Optimization algorithms. The classic design of submerged arches is only focused on calculating the bending stress-less shape (funicular shape) of the structure. Nevertheless, recent works show that this funicular shape can be approached by using a parametric family curve, which also allows a multi-variable optimization of the arch’s geometry. Using this novel parametric set of curves, we propose a new Coral Reefs Optimization (CRO) algorithm based on a memetic approach to tackle the geometrically nonlinear design of submerged arches. Specifically, the proposed CRO approaches have been tested with different search procedures as exploration operators, and we also test a multi-method version of the algorithm, the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers (CRO-SL), which considers several search procedures within the same evolutionary population. A local search to improve the solutions has been considered in all cases, to obtain powerful memetic operators for this problem. It is also shown how the different memetic versions of the CRO (specially those involving multi-methods and Differential Evolution search procedures), together with the parametric encoding, are able to obtain nearly-optimal geometries for underwater installations. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been compared with state-of-the-art algorithms for optimization: L-SHADE and HCLPSO. Statistical tests have carried out with the aim of comparing the results. It is shown that there is not significant differences between the proposed results by the three algorithms.

The structural evolution of alloys is affected by the elastic energy associated to eigen-stress fields. However, efficient calculations of the elastic energy in evolving geometries are actually a great challenge in promising atomistic simulation techniques such as Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) methods. In this paper, we report two complementary algorithms to calculate the eigen-stress field by linear superposition (a.k.a. LSA, Lineal Superposition Algorithm) and the elastic energy modification in atomistic interdiffusion of alloys (the Atom Exchange Elastic Energy Evaluation ( A E 4 ) Algorithm). LSA is shown to be appropriated for fast incremental stress calculation in highly nanostructured materials, whereas A E 4 provides the required input for KMC and, additionally, it can be used to evaluate the accuracy of the eigen-stress field calculated by LSA. Consequently, they are suitable to be used on-the-fly with KMC. Both algorithms are massively parallel by their definition and thus well-suited for their parallelization on modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Our computational studies confirm that we can obtain significant improvements compared to conventional Finite Element Methods, and the utilization of GPUs opens up new possibilities for the development of these methods in atomistic simulation of materials.

In this manuscript, it is presented, a case-study about the assessment of the seismic behaviour of Veronicas Market. Its structure, initially constituted by steel trusses supported on masonry walls, was subsequently modified by the addition of a mezzanine supported on reinforced concrete piers. Applying the capacity spectrum method, based on an updated nonlinear finite element model, the performance levels of both the original and modified structure have been compared to assess the effects originated by the change in the transmission mechanism of the seismic loads., En este artículo, se presenta, un caso en estudio sobre la evaluación del comportamiento sísmico del Mercado de Verónicas. Su estructura, originalmente constituida por cerchas metálica apoyadas sobre muros de fábrica fue posteriormente modificada por la incorporación de una entreplanta con pilares de hormigón armado. Aplicando el método del espectro de capacidad, con base en un modelo calibrado no-lineal de elementos finitos, se han comparado los niveles de desempeño de la estructura original y modificada para valorar los efectos originados por el cambio en el mecanismo de transmisión de las cargas sísmicas.

Damping ratios associated with non structural elements play an important role in mitigating the pedestrian-induced vibrations of slender footbridges. In particular, this paper analyses the effect of vinyl flooring on the modal parameters of steel footbridges. Motivated by the unexpected high experimental damping ratios of the first vibration modes of a real footbridge, whose deck was covered by a vinyl flooring, this paper aims at assessing more accurately the experimental damping ratios generated by this non-structural element on steel footbridges. For this purpose, a laboratory footbridge was built and vinyl flooring was installed on it. Its numerical and experimental modal parameters without and with the vinyl flooring were determined. The operational modal analysis method was used to estimate experimentally the modal parameters of the structure. The damping ratios associated with the vinyl flooring were obtained via the substraction between the experimental damping ratios of the laboratory footbridge with and without the vinyl flooring. An average increase of the damping ratios of 2.069% was observed due to the vinyl flooring installed.
