In this work, the mechanisms for creating a combined electronic–radiative local state beneath the conduction band, consisting of intrinsic and activator electron–hole states, are experimentally substantiated. In the first part of this work, the mechanisms of the formation of intrinsic and activator electron–hole trapping centers are experimentally demonstrated in all four matrices with activators. Intrinsic electronic states are localized on activators and anions of the matrix, forming intrinsic and activator electronic states. The hole component of the electron–hole pairs is localized near the activators. Thus, the energy of intrinsic electronic excitations localized in the matrix in the form of combined electronic–radiative states is observed at 3.06–3.1 eV and 2.92–2.95 eV. Radiative states are excited by photon energies of ~4.5 eV and ~4.0 eV, resulting in recombination emissions at 3.06–3.1 eV and 2.92–2.95 eV, as well as activator emissions at 2.06 eV for Mn2+, 2.5 eV for Tb3+, and 2.56 eV and 2.16 eV for Dy3+. Energy transfer from the matrix to emitters or activators occurs during the decay of the combined radiative state. Upon heating, electrons localized on anions and activators delocalize at temperatures of 200–350 K. The energy released during the recombination of an electron with a hole near the activators is transferred to the activators. This process facilitates energy transfer to activators in dosimeters and detectors.

In the present work, iron–sillenite (Bi25FeO40) was synthesized using a simple solid-state reaction method and characterized. The effects of the synthesis conditions on the phase purity of Bi2O3/Fe3O4, morphological features, and possible application as an XRD/MRI dual-contrast agent were investigated. For the synthesis, the stoichiometric amounts of Bi2O3 and Fe3O4 were mixed and subsequently milled in a planetary ball mill for 10 min with a speed of 300 rpm. The milled mixture was calcined at various temperatures (550 °C, 700 °C, 750 °C, 800 °C, and 850 °C) for 1 h in air at a heating rate of 5 °C/min. For phase identification, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed and infrared (FTIR) spectra were recorded. The surface morphology of synthesized samples was studied by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). For the radiopacity measurements, iron–sillenite specimens were synthesized at different temperatures and mixed with different amounts of BaSO4 and Laponite solution. It was demonstrated that iron–sillenite Bi25FeO40 possessed sufficient radiopacity and could be a potential candidate to meet the requirements of its application as an XRD/MRI dual-contrast agent.

The mechanisms of formation of induced intrinsic and impurity radiative states, which consist of intrinsic and impurity electron–hole-trapping center states in irradiated Ca2P2O7−Mn and Ca2P2O7 phosphates, were investigated using thermoactivation and vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy methods. These centers are excited at photon energies of 4.0 eV and 4.5 eV, which are within the matrix’s transparency region. New radiative-induced states at 3.06 eV and 2.92 eV are demonstrated to be generated upon the excitation of anions by photons with energies of 5.0 and 5.64 eV. This process is due to charge transfer from the ion to the impurities, specifically Mn2+(O2−−Mn2+) and the neighboring ion O 2−−(P2O7)4−. Furthermore, upon the excitation of matrix anions with photon energies exceeding the band gap (8.0–8.25 eV), electron-trapping by impurities such as Mn2+ and (P2O7)4− ions results.

The development of environmentally friendly and energy-saving processes for recycling electronic waste (e-waste) is still relevant today. The research presented in this work relates to hydrometallurgy, namely, the electrochemical leaching of metals from e-waste under the action of alternating current (AC) into hydrochloric acid solutions of electrolytes, and can be used for leaching both noble and non-ferrous metals from secondary raw materials. The main object of the study was disintegrator-crushed mixed computer PCBs metal-rich powders with a particle size (d) of el) and composition of the electrolyte solution, AC density (i) on the electrodes, experiment duration (tex) while maintaining a constant electrolyte temperature (60 °C, 70 °C, and 80 °C) on the metal (Au, Ag, Cu, Al, Ni, Pb, Sn, Ti, Zn, and Fe) leaching efficiency has been studied. In addition, under similar experimental conditions, but without external control of Tel, the kinetics of metal leaching from raw material powders obtained via PCBs single and double crushing in a disintegrator has been also presented. Comparison of raw material powders obtained from different batches of the source material showed both the variability of its chemical composition and the different kinetics of Au and Ag leaching under the same experimental conditions. The optimal conditions for pretreatment of the raw material obtained by single crushing in a disintegrator (CHCl = 6 mol·L−1, i = 0.88 A·cm−2, tex = 1 h, solid-to-liquid ratio—8.6 g·L−1 and without external control of Tel) were determined. It has been shown that this electrochemical pretreatment is accompanied by transition of only base metals into the electrolyte solution, making it possible to significantly reduce their concentration in the final solution. Under pretreatment conditions, the following degree of metal leaching (RMe) has been established: RCu = 98.2%, RAl = 62.8%, RNi = 53.4%, RPb = 93.2%, RSn = 98.0%, RTi = 88.5%, RZn = 61.6%, and RFe = 78.8%. As a result of a subsequent two-hour electrochemical treatment of a solid residue, the degree of leaching of gold and silver was 73.6% and 86.7%, respectively. The presented results provide a broader understanding of the possibility of using the proposed electrochemical hydrochlorination method for noble and base metals leaching from waste PCBs. The novelty and practical value of this research is a validation of the developed technology in laboratory conditions using the real batch of the PCBs. This approach may also be useful to researchers involved in the recycling of other types of secondary raw materials.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) make up 3 to 5% of all electronic waste. The metal content of spent PCBs can reach 40%. They usually contain valuable metals, such as Ag, Au, and Pd, as well as other metals such as Cu, Sn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Zn, Ni, and Mn. However, the metallic part of a whole PCB is 40–60% including the Cu layers between the fiberglass–polymer layers. The paper describes the economics of the valuable metal (Ag, Au, Pd)-containing concentrate preparation from a raw PCB. We considered the influence of the pre-treatment method of PCBs before the extraction of valuable metals on the extraction self-cost change. The disintegration method is based on the high-energy impact of the particles of the material to be ground, thus causing the separation of the metallic components of the PCB. In the course of the work, single and double direct grinding using the method of disintegration was studied. For the calculation, the test batch of 10,000 kg of two types of PCB was taken for estimation of the self costs and potential profit in the case of complete valuable metals (Ag, Au, Pd) plus Cu extraction. It was shown that from 10,000 kg of studied PCB, it is possible to obtain 1144 and 1644 kg of metal-rich concentrate, which should be further subjected to electro-hydrochlorination for metals leaching. The novelty of this research lies in the fact that a technical and economic analysis has been carried out on a newly developed combined technology for processing electronic waste. This included mechanical processing and electrochemical leaching with the help of the active chlorine that is formed in situ. The real (not specially selected or prepared) waste PCBs were used for the process’s economical efficiency evaluation. The main findings showed that despite the high content of Cu in the studied PCBs, the commercial value was insignificant in relation to the total income from the Ag, Au, and Pd sale. A correlation was established between the self-cost decrease after separative disintegration of PCBs by metal content increase (by specific metals such as Au, Ag, Pd, and Cu) with the metal potential yield after extraction.

Abstract In the present work, three different Mn2+-doped calcium pyrophosphate (CPP, Ca2P2O7) polymorphs were synthesized by wet co-precipitation method followed by annealing at different temperatures. The crystal structure and purity were studied by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SS-NMR), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the morphological features of the synthesized products. Optical properties were investigated using photoluminescence measurements. Excitation spectra, emission spectra, and photoluminescence decay curves of the samples were studied. All Mn-doped polymorphs exhibited a broadband emission ranging from approximately 500 to 730 nm. The emission maximum was host-dependent and centered at around 580, 570, and 595 nm for γ-, β-, and α-CPP, respectively.

Cross-linked organiс-inorganic sulfo-containing membranes of various compositions based on acrylic monomers (acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, 3-sulfopropylacrylate potassium salt, ethylene glycol diacrylate) and sol-gel systems of tetraethoxysilane have been developed. Synthesis of the polymer matrix was carried out by UV-initiated polymerization of the monomer mixture and the inorganic component was formed in situ while conducting the sol-gel process of the precursor. FTIR, SEM, EDS, DMA, impedance spectroscopy were used to characterize the synthesized materials. The influence of inorganic component content on the properties of the membranes was investigated. DMA results show that an increase in silica content leads to a decrease in packing density and an increase in structural heterogeneity in sulfo-containing polyacrylate/silica membranes. The highest values of proton conductivity 1.12 ꞏ 10−2 Sm/cm at 60 °C were found in membranes containing 3 wt.%. of the added sol-gel system. Further increase of silica content does not increase the proton conductivity of the membranes. The proton transfer activation energies in the membranes were calculated from the temperature dependence of proton conductivity. The obtained cross-linked sulfo-containing organic-inorganic materials can be used for the development of proton-conducting membranes for fuel cells.

Abstract In the present work, gadolinium substitution effects on the properties of yttrium manganite YxGd1−xMn0.97Fe0.03O3 (x from 0 to 1 with a step of 0.2) synthesized by an aqueous sol–gel method have been investigated. Partial substitution of Mn3+ by 57Fe3+ in the manganite was also performed in order to investigate deeper the structural properties of synthesized compounds applying Mössbauer spectroscopy. It was demonstrated that substitution of Y3+ by Gd3+ ions leads to the changes of structural, magnetic and morphological properties of investigated system. The crystal structure gradually transformed from hexagonal to orthorhombic with an increase of Gd3+ content in the crystal lattice. The mixed phase was obtained when x = 0.6, whereas other compounds were determined to be monophasic. Magnetization measurements revealed paramagnetic behavior of all specimens, however magnetization values were found to be dependent on chemical composition of the samples. Solid solutions with orthorhombic structure revealed higher magnetization values compared to those of hexagonal samples. The highest magnetization was observed for pure GdMn0.97Fe0.03O3. Structural properties were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer, FTIR and Raman spectroscopies. Morphological features of the synthesized specimens were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Yttrium manganite (YMnO3) is a compound belonging to the hexagonal rare earth manganites family, which demonstrates multiferroic properties. This material can be prepared by several synthetic approaches, with the most common one being the solid-state synthesis. In this work, we show a possibility of preparing this material via molten salt synthesis using the NaCl-KCl mixture as the reaction medium and yttrium and manganese nitrates as the starting materials. We demonstrate that, by varying the reaction temperature and the nitrates-to-chlorides ratio, it is feasible to synthesize hexagonally shaped particles of microscopic dimensions. A similar synthesis procedure can be successfully applied for the preparation of other hexagonal manganites—ErMnO3, TmMnO3, and YbMnO3.

This paper presents the results of the leaching of metals from computer PCBs by electrochemical hydrochlorination using alternating current (AC) with an industrial frequency (50 Hz). Leaching was carried out with a disintegrator-crushed computer motherboard with a particle size (d) of HCl = 6 mol·L−1, i = 0.80 A·cm−2, S/L = 8.6 g·L−1), is reached after 1.5 h, and that of Cu and Ni is reached after 2 h from the beginning of the experiment. At the same time, the degree of leaching of other metals after 2 h is Co-78.8%, Cr-84.4%, Sb-91.7%, Fe-98.9%, V-98.1% and Pb-5.1%. The paper also reports the results on the leaching of all abovementioned metals, as well as Ag and Pd, with disintegrator-crushed mixed computer PCBs with d < 90 μm and loading option 1.

In this study, the effects of sodium lauryl sulfate and various amino acids (DL-aspartic acid, dodecanedioic acid, and suberic acid) on the formation of calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite via hydrolysis of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) were investigated; moreover, a combined effect of these additives and ethylene glycol as a synthesis medium was also estimated. The hydrolysis reaction was performed in solutions containing different concentrations of additives in aqueous and mixed aqueous–organic media under solvothermal conditions. It was demonstrated that the nature and the concentration of organic additives influence the phase purity and morphology of the final product. Higher concentrations of sodium lauryl sulfate and dodecanedioic acid induced the formation of impurities in addition to hydroxyapatite, while aspartic and suberic acid did not affect the phase purity. The morphology of the samples varied from plate- to rod-like depending on the concentrations of specific organic additive.

Rare-earth-doped GdPO4 nanoparticles have recently attracted much scientific interest due to the simultaneous optical and magnetic properties of these materials and their possible application in bio-imaging. Herein, we report the hydrothermal synthesis of GdPO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles by varying different synthesis parameters: pH, : molar ratio, and Eu3+ concentration. It turned out that the Eu3+ content in the synthesized nanoparticles had little effect on particle shape and morphology. The synthesis media pH, however, has showed a pronounced impact on particle size and distribution, i.e., the nanoparticle length can be adjusted from hundreds to tens of nanometers by changing the pH from 2 to 11, respectively. Increasing the : molar ratio resulted in a decrease in nanoparticle length and an increase in its width. The temperature-dependent measurements in the 77–500 K range revealed that the GdPO4:50%Eu3+ sample maintains half of its emission intensity, even at room temperature (TQ1/2 = 291 ± 19 K).

In this study, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the new garnets Y3−xNaxAl5O12, Y3−xKxAl5O12, Y3Al5−yVyO12, and Y3−xNaxAl5−yVyO12 with various stoichiometric compositions were successfully synthesized by the aqueous sol-gel method. All obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). It was determined from the XRD results that the formation of monophasic Y3−xNaxAl5O12, Y3−xKxAl5O12, Y3Al5−yVyO12, and Y3−xNaxAl5−yVyO12 garnets is possible only at limited doping levels. The highest substitutional level of doped metal was observed for the YAG doped with sodium (x = 1), and the lowest substitutional level was observed for the YAG doped with vanadium (y = 0.05). Furthermore, the obtained FTIR spectroscopy results were in good agreement with the XRD analysis data, i.e., they confirmed that the YAG is the main crystalline phase in the end products. The SEM was used to study the morphology of the garnets, and the results obtained showed that all synthesized samples were composed of nano-sized agglomerated crystallites.

In this study, a low-temperature synthetic approach was developed for the fabrication of calcium hydroxyapatite (CHAp) coatings on a titanium substrate. The titanium substrates were first coated with CaCO3 by a spin-coating technique using a sol–gel chemistry approach, and the obtained product was transformed into CHAp during a dissolution–precipitation reaction. The phase purity and structural and morphological features of the obtained CHAp coatings were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and using a 3D optical profilometer. It was demonstrated that almost-single-phase CHAp formed on the titanium substrate with a negligible number of side phases, such as Na2HPO4 (starting material) and TiO2. In the Raman spectrum of the CHAp coating, the peaks of phosphate group vibrations were clearly seen. Thus, the obtained results of Raman spectroscopy correlated well with the results of X-ray diffraction analysis. The corrosive behaviour of CHAp coatings on a titanium substrate was also evaluated using electrochemical methods. It was found that the corrosion resistance of titanium coated with CHAp increased significantly. These CHAp thin films may be potential candidates for use in not only in regenerative medicine but also in the development of different sensors.

Modern technologies for recycling electronic waste (e-waste) have high economic efficiency and environmental safety requirements. Among the existing technologies, hydrometallurgy is considered to be the most promising technology for e-waste recycling. Increasing attention paid to the chlorination method is associated with the complex recycling of low-grade ores containing noble metals and the raw materials of secondary polymetallic. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for leaching metals from computer printed circuit boards (PCBs) pre-crushed in a disintegrator: The processes of chlorine production and hydrochlorination are implemented in one reactor under the action of an alternating current (AC) of industrial frequency (50 Hz). Three fine fractions of raw material powders with particle size d < 90 µm, d = 90–180 µm, and d = 180–350 µm were used as research objects and the finest fraction of the raw material (d < 90 µm) was studied in more detail. It was found that complete leaching of gold is achieved from fractions of raw materials with a particle size d = 90–180 µm and d = 180–350 µm, containing 277 ppm and 67 ppm of the gold, respectively, at an experiment duration (tex) of 2 h, a current density (i) of 0.66 A·cm−2, and a solid/liquid (S/L) ratio of 8.6 g·L−1. Under the same conditions of the electrochemical leaching process from the fraction of raw materials with a particle size of d < 90 µm and a gold content of 824 ppm, the degree of metal leaching is 80.5%. At the same time, with an increase in particle size in the raw material fractions from d < 90 µm to d = 180–350 µm and a copper content in the raw material from 1.40% to 6.13%, an increase in the degree of its leaching from 81.6% to 95.2%, respectively, is observed. In the framework of the preliminary study presented in this work, for the finest raw material fraction with d < 90 μm the highest gold leaching degree (86.3%) was achieved under the following experimental conditions: tex= 4 h, CHCl = 6 M, i = 0.88 A·cm–2, S/L ratio—8.6 g·L–1 and the highest copper leaching degree (94.2%) was achieved under the following experimental conditions: tex = 2 h, CHCl = 6 M, i = 0.64 A·cm–2, and S/L ratio—2.9 g·L–1.

In this work, graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) were synthesized using three different oxidizers: (NH4)2S2O8, K2S2O8, and CrO3 with and without P2O5 as a water-binding agent. Furthermore, the samples obtained were heat-treated at 800 °C. Specimens were characterized by optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The correlation between different characteristic parameters of the Raman analysis has shown that the use of CrO3 results in a much higher structural disorder compared to the products obtained using persulfate oxidizers. Narrowing the correlation set revealed that minimal defect concentration can be reached by using K2S2O8, while the use of (NH4)2S2O8 causes a slightly higher concentration of defects. It was also established that the additional use of P2O5 can help to achieve more effective intercalation and has a positive effect on the formation of the stage I GIC phase. After heat treatment, the intercalated products mostly return to a graphite-like structure; however, the samples obtained with CrO3 stand out with the most significant changes in their surface morphology. Therefore, analysis suggests that GICs obtained using persulfate oxidizers and P2O5 could be a candidate to produce high-quality graphene or graphene oxide.

In the present work, the effects of various organic solvents (solvent nature and fraction within the solution) and solvothermal conditions on the formation of calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) via hydrolysis of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) are investigated. The wet precipitation method is applied for α-TCP synthesis, and the hydrolysis reaction is performed in solutions with different water-to-organic solvent ratios under solvothermal conditions at 120 °C for 3 h and at 200 °C for 5 h. Ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and butyl alcohol did not inhibit the hydrolysis of α-TCP, while methyl alcohol and ethylene glycol have a more prominent inhibitory effect on the hydrolysis, hence the formation of single-phased CDHA. From all the solvents analysed, ethylene glycol has the highest impact on the sample morphology. Under certain water to ethylene glycol ratios and solvothermal conditions, samples containing a significant fraction of rods are obtained. However, samples prepared with ethylene glycol are characterised by a particularly low BET surface area.

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is well known as an effective root canal filling material for endodontics therapy. Within MTA, bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) serving as the radiopacifier still has biocompatibility concerns due to its mild cytotoxicity. In the present study, we tried to modify the Bi2O3 radiopacifier by doping hafnium ions via the sol-gel process and investigated the effects of different doping ratios (Bi2-xHfxO3+x/2, x = 0–0.3) and calcination temperatures (400–800 °C). We mixed various precursor mixtures of bismuth nitrate (Bi(NO3)3·5H2O) and hafnium sulfate (Hf(SO4)2) and controlled the calcination temperatures. The as-prepared Hf-doped Bi2O3 radiopacifier powders were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Portland cement/radiopacifier/calcium sulfate (75/20/5) were mixed and set by deionized water (powder to water ratio = 3:1). Changes in radiopacity, diametral tensile strength (DTS), and in vitro cell viability of the hydrated MTA-like cement were carried out. The experimental results showed that the group containing radiopacifier from sol-gelled Bi/Hf (90/10) exhibited significantly higher radiopacity (6.36 ± 0.34 mmAl), DTS (2.54 ± 0.29 MPa), and cell viability (84.0±8.1%) (p < 0.05) when compared to that of Bi/Hf (100/0) powders. It is suggested that the formation of β-Bi7.78Hf0.22O12.11 phase with hafnium addition and calcining at 700 °C can prepare novel bismuth/hafnium composite powder that can be used as an alternative radiopacifier for root canal filling materials.

Cerium and chromium co-doped gadolinium aluminum gallium garnets were prepared using sol-gel technique. These compounds potentially can be applied for NIR-LED construction, horticulture and theranostics. Additionally, magnesium and calcium ions were also incorporated into the structure. X-ray diffraction data analysis confirmed the all-cubic symmetry with an Ia-3d space group, which is appropriate for garnet-type materials. From the characterization of the luminescence properties, it was confirmed that both chromium and cerium emissions could be incorporated. Cerium luminescence was detected under 450 nm excitation, while for chromium emission, 270 nm excitation was used. The emission of chromium ions was exceptionally intense, although it was determined that these compounds are doped only by parts per million of Cr3+ ions. Typically, the emission maxima of chromium ions are located around 650–750 nm in garnet systems. However, in this case, the emission maximum for chromium is measured to be around 790 nm, caused by re-absorption of Cr3+ ions. The main observation of this study is that the switchable emission wavelength in a compound of single phase was obtained, despite the fact that doping with Cr ions was performed in ppm level, causing an intense emission in NIR region.

In the present work, Cr-substituted Mg3Al1−xCrx layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were synthesised through the phase conversion of sol-gel-derived mixed-metal oxides in an aqueous medium. The chromium substitution level in the range of 1 to 25 mol% was investigated. It was demonstrated that all synthesised specimens were single-phase LDHs. The results of elemental analysis confirmed that the suggested synthetic sol-gel chemistry approach is suitable for the preparation of LDHs with a highly controllable chemical composition. The surface microstructure of sol-gel-derived Mg3Al1−xCrx LDHs does not depend on the chromium substitution level. The formation of plate-like agglomerated particles, which consist of hexagonally shaped nanocrystallites varying in size from approximately 200 to 300 nm, was observed. Optical properties of the synthesised Mg3Al1−xCrx LDHs were investigated by means of photoluminescence. All Cr-containing powders exhibited characteristic emission in the red region of the visible spectrum. The strongest emission was observed for the sample doped with 5 mol% Cr3+ ions. However, the emission intensity of samples doped with 1–10 mol% Cr3+ ions was relatively similar. A further increase in the Cr3+ ion concentration to 25 mol% resulted in severe concentration quenching.

The aim of the work was to check how the introduction of alkali and cobalt ions into a manganese structure can affect the structural disorder and, in consequence, lead to the changes (improvements) of magnetic properties. The high-pressure sintering technique was applied to check if the external factor can modify the magnetization of manganites. Nanocrystalline La0.9A0.1Mn0.9Co0.1O3 (where A is Li, K, Na) powders were synthesized by the combustion technique. The respective powders were used for nanoceramics preparation by the high-pressure sintering technique. The structure and morphology of the compounds were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Magnetization studies for all compounds were performed in order to check the changes induced by either codoping or the sintering pressure. It was found that the type of the dopant ion and sintering pressure produced significant changes to the magnetic properties of the studied compounds. Alkali ions lead to the stabilization of Co ions in the +2 oxidation state and the formation of positive exchange interactions Mn3+–Mn4+ and Co2+–Mn4+ and the subsequent increase in remanent magnetization. High sintering pressure leads to a decrease in grain size and reduction of long-range ferromagnetic order and lower magnetization.

In this study, the aqueous sol-gel method was employed for the synthesis of (1−x)SrTiO3-xBiMnO3 solid solutions. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of single-phase perovskites with a cubic structure up to x = 0.3. A further increase of the BiMnO3 content led to the formation of a negligible amount of neighboring Mn3O4 impurity, along with the major perovskite phase. Infrared (FT-IR) analysis of the synthesized specimens showed gradual spectral change associated with the superposition effect of Mn-O and Ti-O bond lengths. By introducing BiMnO3 into the SrTiO3 crystal structure, the size of the grains increased drastically, which was confirmed by means of scanning electron microscopy. Magnetization studies revealed that all solid solutions containing the BiMnO3 component can be characterized as paramagnetic materials. It was observed that magnetization values clearly correlate with the chemical composition of powders, and the gradual increase of the BiMnO3 content resulted in noticeably higher magnetization values.

For the first time to the best of our knowledge, cobalt-chromium spinels CoCr2−xGaxO4 with different amounts of gallium (x = 0–2 with a step of 0.5) were synthesized via the aqueous sol–gel route as ceramic pigments. The phase composition, crystallite size, morphological features, and color parameters of new compositions and their corresponding ceramic glazes were investigated using XRD, CIELab, SEM, and optical microscopy. It was demonstrated that the formation of single-phase CoCr2−xGaxO4 samples was problematic. Full substitution of Cr3+ by Ga3+ ion in the spinel resulted in the formation of light blue powders, which yielded violetish blue color for the corresponding ceramic glaze.

In this study, the reconstruction peculiarities of sol–gel derived Mg2−xMx/Al1 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) layered double hydroxides were investigated. The mixed metal oxides (MMO) were synthesized by two different routes. Firstly, the MMO were obtained directly by heating Mg(M)–Al–O precursor gels at 650 °C, 800 °C, and 950 °C. These MMO were reconstructed to the Mg2−xMx/Al1 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in water at 50 °C for 6 h (pH 10). Secondly, in this study, the MMO were also obtained by heating reconstructed LDHs at the same temperatures. The synthesized materials were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Nitrogen adsorption by the Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) and Barrett, Joyner, and Halenda (BJH) methods were used to determine the surface area and pore diameter of differently synthesized alkaline earth metal substituted MMO compounds. It was demonstrated for the first time that the microstructure of reconstructed MMO from sol–gel derived LDHs showed a “memory effect”.
