Abstract The lattice geometry of natural materials and the structural geometry of artificial materials are crucial factors determining their physical properties. Most materials have predetermined geometries that lead to fixed physical characteristics. Here, the demonstration of a carbon nanotube network serves as an example of a system with controllable orientation achieving on‐demand optical properties. Such a network allows programming their optical response depending on the orientation of the constituent carbon nanotubes and leads to the switching of its dielectric tensor from isotropic to anisotropic. Furthermore, it also allows for the achievement of wavelength‐dispersion for their principal optical axes – a recently discovered phenomenon in van der Waals triclinic crystals. The results originate from two unique carbon nanotubes features: uniaxial anisotropy from the well‐defined cylindrical geometry and the intersection interaction among individual carbon nanotubes. The findings demonstrate that shaping the relative orientations of carbon nanotubes or other quasi‐one‐dimensional materials of cylindrical symmetry within a network paves the way to a universal method for the creation of systems with desired optical properties.

Abstract Nature is abundant in material platforms with anisotropic permittivities arising from symmetry reduction that feature a variety of extraordinary optical effects. Principal optical axes are essential characteristics for these effects that define light-matter interaction. Their orientation – an orthogonal Cartesian basis that diagonalizes the permittivity tensor, is often assumed stationary. Here, we show that the low-symmetry triclinic crystalline structure of van der Waals rhenium disulfide and rhenium diselenide is characterized by wandering principal optical axes in the space-wavelength domain with above π/2 degree of rotation for in-plane components. In turn, this leads to wavelength-switchable propagation directions of their waveguide modes. The physical origin of wandering principal optical axes is explained using a multi-exciton phenomenological model and ab initio calculations. We envision that the wandering principal optical axes of the investigated low-symmetry triclinic van der Waals crystals offer a platform for unexplored anisotropic phenomena and nanophotonic applications.

Abstract The emergence of van der Waals (vdW) materials resulted in the discovery of their high optical, mechanical, and electronic anisotropic properties, immediately enabling countless novel phenomena and applications. Such success inspired an intensive search for the highest possible anisotropic properties among vdW materials. Furthermore, the identification of the most promising among the huge family of vdW materials is a challenging quest requiring innovative approaches. Here, we suggest an easy-to-use method for such a survey based on the crystallographic geometrical perspective of vdW materials followed by their optical characterization. Using our approach, we found As2S3 as a highly anisotropic vdW material. It demonstrates high in-plane optical anisotropy that is ~20% larger than for rutile and over two times as large as calcite, high refractive index, and transparency in the visible range, overcoming the century-long record set by rutile. Given these benefits, As2S3 opens a pathway towards next-generation nanophotonics as demonstrated by an ultrathin true zero-order quarter-wave plate that combines classical and the Fabry–Pérot optical phase accumulations. Hence, our approach provides an effective and easy-to-use method to find vdW materials with the utmost anisotropic properties.

The plasmonic sensors based on silver nanoparticles are limited in application due to their relatively fast degradation in the ambient atmosphere. The technology of ion-beam modification for the creation of monocrystalline silver nanoparticles (NPs) with stable plasmonic properties will expand the application of silver nanostructures. In the present study, highly-stable monocrystalline NPs were formed on the basis of a thin silver film by low-energy ion irradiation. Combined with lithography, this technique allows the creation of nanoparticle ensembles in variant forms. The characterization of the nanoparticles formed by ion-beam modification showed long-term outstanding for Ag nanoparticles stability of their plasmonic properties due to their monocrystalline structure. According to optical spectroscopy data, the reliable plasmonic properties in the ambient atmosphere are preserved for up to 39 days. The mapping of crystal violet dye via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) revealed a strong amplification factor sustaining at least thrice as long as the one of similarly sized polycrystalline silver NPs formed by annealing. The plasmonic properties sustain more than a month of storage in the ambient atmosphere. Thus, ion-beam modification of silver film makes it possible to fabricate NPs with stable plasmonic properties and form clusters of NPs for sensor technology and SERS applications.

Two-dimensional materials look poised to revolutionize information and communication technologies. Here, the authors leveraged spatially resolved ellipsometry to engineer the optical absorption of graphene on hexagonal boron nitride substrates, thereby disclosing effective solutions for flexible optoelectronics.

Abstract The growing family of two-dimensional crystals has been recognized as a promising platform for investigation of rich low-dimension physics and production of a variety of devices. Of particular interest are recently reported atomic sheets of non-van der Waals materials, which reshape our understanding of chemical bonds and enable heterostructures with novel functionality. Here, we study the structural and optical properties of ultrathin non-van der Waals InGaS3 sheets produced by standard mechanical cleavage. Our ab initio calculations reveal weak out-of-plane covalent bonds, responsible for the layered structure of the material. The energy required for isolation of a single layer is as low as ~50 meVÅ–2, which is comparable with the conventional van der Waals material’s monolayer isolation energies of 20–60 meVÅ–2. A comprehensive study of the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of the material reveals its wide bandgap (2.73 eV), high refractive index (>2.5) and negligible losses in the visible and infrared spectral ranges. These properties make it a perfect candidate for visible-range all-dielectric nanophotonics.

For terahertz wave applications, tunable and rapid modulation is highly required. When studied by means of optical pump–terahertz probe spectroscopy, single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin films demonstrated ultrafast carrier recombination lifetimes with a high relative change in the signal under optical excitation, making them promising candidates for high-speed modulators. Here, combination of SWCNT thin films and stretchable substrates facilitated studies of the SWCNT mechanical properties under strain and enabled the development of a new type of an optomechanical modulator. By applying a certain strain to the SWCNT films, the effective sheet conductance and therefore modulation depth can be fine-tuned to optimize the designed modulator. Modulators exhibited a photoconductivity change of approximately 2 times of magnitude under the strain because of the structural modification in the SWCNT network. Stretching was used to control the terahertz signal with a modulation depth of around 100% without strain and 65% at a high strain operation of 40%. The sensitivity of modulators to beam polarization is also shown, which might also come in handy for the design of a stretchable polarizer. Our results give a fundamental grounding for the design of high-sensitivity stretchable devices based on SWCNT films.

We report an ultra-sensitive broadband photodetector based on horizontally aligned titanium disulfide nanosheets (TNs). Firstly, TNs were synthesized using the chemical vapor transport (CVT) technique to develop the photodetector, and then as-prepared TNs were deposited horizontally aligned between the interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) using the dielectrophoresis (DEP) technique. The photodetection performance of the as-prepared photodetector was analysed by illuminating the device with different wavelength low-power LED lights. The sensitivity of the as-developed photodetector has been studied for varying wavelength range (375 nm, 405 nm, 455 nm, 617 nm, 855 nm, 1050 nm) as well as for different power densities of individual incident lights. The as-developed photodetector shows high photoresponse for all mentioned wavelengths and shows a rapid response (10s) and recovery (10s) with ultra-high responsivity (1.174 × 104 AW−1), quantum efficiency (3.20 × 104 AW−1nm−1) as well as detectivity (3.039 × 1011 Jones) for 455 nm wavelength and 0.086 mW/mm2 power density of incident light. The ON/OFF ratio of the as-developed photodetector is found ultra-high i.e. 28.54. Its performance with respect to external bias voltage has also been studied and reported in the manuscript. The as-prepared TNs based photodetector shows many advantageous features like high stability and repeatability. The demonstrated ultra-sensitive photoresponse of as-prepared photodetector suggests the effectiveness of TNs for improving the characteristics of modern optoelectronic devices.

Cooling of quartz-SAW devices leads to a noticeable increase in sensitivity. However, the effect of heating on the output characteristics of quartz-SAW resonators in terms of sensitivity has not yet been studied. Here we examine the inverse parabolic temperature characteristics of a quartz-SAW resonator in order to study the effect of temperature rise on the sensitivity. Various characteristics of a quartz SAW resonator are measured such as frequency shifts, phase, and group delay by Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) over a temperature range of 5 °C to 150 °C. It is shown that the sensitivity could be increased at certain combinations when the operating frequency (fo) is tuned away from the centre frequency (fc) along with temperatures higher or lower than room temperature. Sensitivity increases up to 24-fold was achieved when T > 120 °C and fo > fc. This study of temperature tuning of SAW device will be useful for enhancing the sensitivity in various SAW sensing applications for various industrial purposes.

Photodetectors that can operate over a wide range of temperatures, from cryogenic to elevated temperatures, are crucial for a variety of modern scientific fields, including aerospace, high-energy science, and astro-particle science. In this study, we investigate the temperature-dependent photodetection properties of titanium trisulfide (TiS3)- in order to develop high-performance photodetectors that can operate across a wide range of temperatures (77 K–543 K). We fabricate a solid-state photodetector using the dielectrophoresis technique, which demonstrates a quick response (response/recovery time ~0.093 s) and high performance over a wide range of temperatures. Specifically, the photodetector exhibits a very high photocurrent (6.95 × 10−5 A), photoresponsivity (1.624 × 108 A/W), quantum efficiency (3.3 × 108 A/W·nm), and detectivity (4.328 × 1015 Jones) for a 617 nm wavelength of light with a very weak intensity (~1.0 × 10−5 W/cm2). The developed photodetector also shows a very high device ON/OFF ratio (~32). Prior to fabrication, the TiS3 nanoribbons were synthesized using the chemical vapor technique and characterized according to their morphology, structure, stability, and electronic and optoelectronic properties; this was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and a UV–Visible–NIR spectrophotometer. We anticipate that this novel solid-state photodetector will have broad applications in modern optoelectronic devices.

Materials with high optical constants are of paramount importance for efficient light manipulation in nanophotonics applications. Recent advances in materials science have revealed that van der Waals (vdW) materials have large optical responses owing to strong in-plane covalent bonding and weak out-of-plane vdW interactions. However, the optical constants of vdW materials depend on numerous factors, e.g., synthesis and transfer method. Here, we demonstrate that in a broad spectral range (290–3300 nm) the refractive index n and the extinction coefficient k of Bi2Se3 are almost independent of synthesis technology, with only a ~10% difference in n and k between synthesis approaches, unlike other vdW materials, such as MoS2, which has a ~60% difference between synthesis approaches. As a practical demonstration, we showed, using the examples of biosensors and therapeutic nanoparticles, that this slight difference in optical constants results in reproducible efficiency in Bi2Se3-based photonic devices.

Ultrathin metal films are an essential platform for two-dimensional (2D) material compatible and flexible optoelectronics. Characterization of thin and ultrathin film-based devices requires a thorough consideration of the crystalline structure and local optical and electrical properties of the metal-2D material interface since they could be dramatically different from the bulk material. Recently, it was demonstrated that the growth of gold on the chemical vapor deposited monolayer MoS2 leads to a continuous metal film that preserves plasmonic optical response and conductivity even at thicknesses below 10 nm. Here, we examined the optical response and morphology of ultrathin gold films deposited on exfoliated MoS2 crystal flakes on the SiO2/Si substrate via scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). We demonstrate a direct relationship between the ability of thin film to support guided surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) and the s-SNOM signal intensity with a very high spatial resolution. Using this relationship, we observed the evolution of the structure of gold films grown on SiO2 and MoS2 with an increase in thickness. The continuous morphology and superior ability with respect to supporting SPPs of the ultrathin (≤10 nm) gold on MoS2 is further confirmed with scanning electron microscopy and direct observation of SPP fringes via s-SNOM. Our results establish s-SNOM as a tool for testing plasmonic films and motivate further theoretical research on the impact of the interplay between the guided modes and the local optical properties on the s-SNOM signal.

Two-dimensional TiS3-nanostructures have been used to successfully remove toxic-industrial pollutants such as methyl-orange(MO) and methyl-blue(MB) from water bodies. Two-dimensional TiS3-nanostructures with exceptional mobility properties have been produced using the chemical vapor transport(CVT) technique and its photocatalytic capabilities are examined for potential environmental applications.Under infrared(IR) irradiation, the produced TiS3-nanoribbons were evaluated for their ability to degrade MO and MB solutions. TiS3-nanoribbons reveal significant high disintegration percentage; it is capable to decompose 90.3% of 50 μM MO pollutant solution in 5 min. Moreover it decomposes 94.4% of 50 μM MO solution as well as 10 μM MB solution in 20 min and 12 min, respectively.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures pave the way to achieve the desired material properties for a variety of applications. In this way, new scientific and industrial challenges and fundamental questions arise. One of them is whether vdW materials preserve their original optical response when assembled in a heterostructure. Here, we resolve this issue for four exemplary monolayer heterostructures: MoS2/Gr, MoS2/hBN, WS2/Gr, and WS2/hBN. Through joint Raman, ellipsometry, and reflectance spectroscopies, we discovered that heterostructures alter MoS2 and WS2 optical constants. Furthermore, despite the similarity of MoS2 and WS2 monolayers, their behavior in heterostructures is markedly different. While MoS2 has large changes, particularly above 3 eV, WS2 experiences modest changes in optical constants. We also detected a transformation from dark into bright exciton for MoS2/Gr heterostructure. In summary, our findings provide clear evidence that the optical response of heterostructures is not the sum of optical properties of its constituents.

The recent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has posed a great challenge for the development of ultra-fast methods for virus identification based on sensor principles. We created a structure modeling surface and size of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and used it in comparison with the standard antigen SARS-CoV-2—the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the S-protein of the envelope of the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Wuhan strain—for the development of detection of coronaviruses using a DNA-modified, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based aptasensor in sandwich mode: a primary aptamer attached to the plasmonic surface—RBD-covered Ag nanoparticle—the Cy3-labeled secondary aptamer. Fabricated novel hybrid plasmonic structures based on “Ag mirror-SiO2-nanostructured Ag” demonstrate sensitivity for the detection of investigated analytes due to the combination of localized surface plasmons in nanostructured silver surface and the gap surface plasmons in a thin dielectric layer of SiO2 between silver layers. A specific SERS signal has been obtained from SERS-active compounds with RBD-specific DNA aptamers that selectively bind to the S protein of synthetic virion (dissociation constants of DNA-aptamer complexes with protein in the range of 10 nM). The purpose of the study is to systematically analyze the combination of components in an aptamer-based sandwich system. A developed virus size simulating silver particles adsorbed on an aptamer-coated sensor provided a signal different from free RBD. The data obtained are consistent with the theory of signal amplification depending on the distance of the active compound from the amplifying surface and the nature of such a compound. The ability to detect the target virus due to specific interaction with such DNA is quantitatively controlled by the degree of the quenching SERS signal from the labeled compound. Developed indicator sandwich-type systems demonstrate high stability. Such a platform does not require special permissions to work with viruses. Therefore, our approach creates the promising basis for fostering the practical application of ultra-fast, amplification-free methods for detecting coronaviruses based on SARS-CoV-2.

Atomically thin molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising channel material for next-generation thin-body field-effect transistors (FETs), which makes the development of methods allowing for its controllable synthesis over a large area an essential task. Currently, one of the cost-effective ways of its synthesis is the sulfurization of preliminary grown oxide- or metallic film. However, despite apparent progress in this field, the electronic quality of the obtained MoS2 is inferior to that of exfoliated samples, making the detailed investigation of the sulfurized films’ properties of great interest. In this work, we synthesized continuous MoS2 films with a thickness of ≈2.2 nm via the sulfurization of an atomic-layer-deposited MoO3 layer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy indicated the appropriate chemical composition and microcrystalline structure of the obtained MoS2 films. The semiconductor quality of the synthesized films was confirmed by the fabrication of a field-effect transistor (FET) with an Ion/Ioff ratio of ≈40, which was limited primarily by the high contact resistance. The Schottky barrier height at the Au/MoS2 interface was found to be ≈1.2 eV indicating the necessity of careful contact engineering. Due to its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, such a technique of MoS2 synthesis still appears to be highly attractive for its applications in next-generation microelectronics. Therefore, further research of the electronic properties of films obtained via this technique is required.

The use of ultra-thin spacer layers above metal has become a popular approach to the enhancement of optical sensitivity and immobilization efficiency of label-free SPR sensors. At the same time, the giant optical anisotropy inherent to transition metal dichalcogenides may significantly affect characteristics of the studied sensors. Here, we present a systematic study of the optical sensitivity of an SPR biosensor platform with auxiliary layers of MoS2. By performing the analysis in a broad spectral range, we reveal the effect of exciton-driven dielectric response of MoS2 and its anisotropy on the sensitivity characteristics. The excitons are responsible for the decrease in the optimal thickness of MoS2. Furthermore, despite the anisotropy being at record height, it affects the sensitivity only slightly, although the effect becomes stronger in the near-infrared spectral range, where it may lead to considerable change in the optimal design of the biosensor.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising tool that can be used in the detection of molecular changes triggered by disease development. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are caused by multiple pathologies originating at the cellular level. The identification of these deteriorations can provide a better understanding of CVD mechanisms, and the monitoring of the identified molecular changes can be employed in the development of novel biosensor tools for early diagnostics. We applied plasmonic SERS nanosensors to assess changes in the properties of erythrocytes under normotensive and hypertensive conditions in the animal model. We found that spontaneous hypertension in rats leads (i) to a decrease in the erythrocyte plasma membrane fluidity and (ii) to a decrease in the mobility of the heme of the membrane-bound hemoglobin. We identified SERS parameters that can be used to detect pathological changes in the plasma membrane and submembrane region of erythrocytes.

Noble transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as PtS2 and PtSe2 show significant potential in a wide range of optoelectronic and photonic applications. Noble TMDCs, unlike standard TMDCs such as MoS2 and WS2, operate in the ultrawide spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths; however, their properties remain largely unexplored. Here, we measured the broadband (245–3300 nm) optical constants of ultrathin PtS2 and PtSe2 films to eliminate this gap and provide a foundation for optoelectronic device simulation. We discovered their broadband absorption and high refractive index both theoretically and experimentally. Based on first-principle calculations, we also predicted their giant out-of-plane optical anisotropy for monocrystals. As a practical illustration of the obtained optical properties, we demonstrated surface plasmon resonance biosensors with PtS2 or PtSe2 functional layers, which dramatically improves sensor sensitivity by 60 and 30%, respectively.

SnS2 and SnSe2 have recently been shown to have a wide range of applications in photonic and optoelectronic devices. However, because of incomplete knowledge about their optical characteristics, the use of SnS2 and SnSe2 in optical engineering remains challenging. Here, we addressed this problem by establishing SnS2 and SnSe2 linear and nonlinear optical properties in the broad (300–3300 nm) spectral range. Coupled with the first-principle calculations, our experimental study unveiled the full dielectric tensor of SnS2 and SnSe2. Furthermore, we established that SnS2 is a promising material for visible high refractive index nanophotonics. Meanwhile, SnSe2 demonstrates a stronger nonlinear response compared with SnS2. Our results create a solid ground for current and next-generation SnS2- and SnSe2-based devices.

The development of efficient plasmonic nanostructures with controlled and reproducible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) signals is an important task for the evolution of ultrasensitive sensor-related methods. One of the methods to improving the characteristics of nanostructures is the development of hybrid structures that include several types of materials. Here, we experimentally investigate ultrathin gold films (3–9 nm) near the percolation threshold on Si/Au/SiO2 and Si/Au/SiO2/graphene multilayer structures. The occurring field enhanced (FE) effects were characterized by a recording of SERS signal from Crystal Violet dye. In this geometry, the overall FE principally benefits from the combination of two mechanisms. The first one is associated with plasmon excitation in Au clusters located closest to each other. The second is due to the gap plasmons’ excitation in a thin dielectric layer between the mirror and corrugated gold layers. Experimentally obtained SERS signals from sandwiched structures fabricated with Au film of 100 nm as a reflector, dielectric SiO2 spacer of 50 nm and ultrathin gold atop could reach SERS enhancements of up to around seven times relative to gold films near the percolation threshold deposited on a standard glass substrate. The close contiguity of the analyte to graphene and nanostructured Au efficiently quenches the fluorescent background of the model compound. The obtained result shows that the strategy of combining ultrathin nano-island gold films near the percolation threshold with gap plasmon resonances is promising for the design of highly efficient SERS substrates for potential applications in ultrasensitive Raman detection.

This review is dedicated to versatile silicone rubber composites based on carbon nanotube/graphene (CNT/G) hybrid fillers. Due to their unique mechanical, electrical, thermal, and biological properties, such composites have enormous potential for medical, environmental, and electronics applications. In the scope of this paper, we have explored CNT/graphene/silicone composites with a different morphology, analyzed the synergistic effect of hybrid fillers on various properties of silicone composites, and observed the existing approaches for the fabrication of hybrid composites with a seamless, assembled, and/or foamed structure. In conclusion, current challenges and future prospects for silicone composites based on CNTs and graphene have been thoroughly discussed.

Graphene is a promising building block material for developing novel photonic and optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a comprehensive experimental study of chemical-vapor deposited (CVD) monolayer graphene’s optical properties on three different substrates for ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectral ranges (from 240 to 1000 nm). Importantly, our ellipsometric measurements are free from the assumptions of additional nanometer-thick layers of water or other media. This issue is critical for practical applications since otherwise, these additional layers must be included in the design models of various graphene photonic, plasmonic, and optoelectronic devices. We observe a slight difference (not exceeding 5%) in the optical constants of graphene on different substrates. Further, the optical constants reported here are very close to those of graphite, which hints on their applicability to multilayer graphene structures. This work provides reliable data on monolayer graphene’s optical properties, which should be useful for modeling and designing photonic devices with graphene.

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with immobilized gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) belong to a class of nanocomposite materials whose physical properties and applications depend on the geometry of arrangements of the plasmonic nanoparticles on HNT’ surfaces. We explore HNTs:(Au, Ag)-NPs as potential nano-templates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The structure and plasmonic properties of nanocomposites based on HNTs and Au- and Ag-NPs are studied by means of the transmission electron microscopy and optical spectroscopy. The optical extinction spectra of aqueous suspensions of HNTs:(Au, Ag)-NPs and spatial distributions of the electric fields are simulated, and the simulation results demonstrate the corresponding localized plasmonic resonances and numerous “hot spots” of the electric field nearby those NPs. In vitro experiments reveal an enhancement of the protein SERS in fibroblast cells with added HNTs:Ag-NPs. The observed optical properties and SERS activity of the nanocomposites based on HNTs and plasmonic NPs are promising for their applications in biosensorics and biophotonics.

Two-dimensional layers of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been widely studied owing to their exciting potential for applications in advanced electronic and optoelectronic devices. Typically, monolayers of TMDs are produced either by mechanical exfoliation or chemical vapor deposition (CVD). While the former produces high-quality flakes with a size limited to a few micrometers, the latter gives large-area layers but with a nonuniform surface resulting from multiple defects and randomly oriented domains. The use of epitaxy growth can produce continuous, crystalline and uniform films with fewer defects. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the optical and structural properties of a single layer of MoS2 synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on a sapphire substrate. For optical characterization, we performed spectroscopic ellipsometry over a broad spectral range (from 250 to 1700 nm) under variable incident angles. The structural quality was assessed by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy through which we were able to confirm that our sample contains a single-atomic layer of MoS2 with a low number of defects. Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies revealed that MBE-synthesized MoS2 layers exhibit a two-times higher quantum yield of photoluminescence along with lower photobleaching compared to CVD-grown MoS2, thus making it an attractive candidate for photonic applications.

In this paper, we report a cost-effective and scalable approach to produce highly homogeneous graphene and CNT-based silicone composites with potential applications in diverse fields of research, including biosensors and wearable electronics. This approach includes the fabrication of hybrid fillers based on few-layer graphene and CNTs by water solution blending and manufacturing of graphene/CNT/PDMS composites through calendering in a three-roll mill. The influence of processing parameters, the graphene/CNT ratio, and hybrid filler loading was thoroughly investigated, and the optimal parameters for producing hybrid composites with superior electrical and mechanical properties were found. It was also confirmed that the graphene/CNT hybrid system exhibits a synergistic effect of non-covalent interactions between graphene sheets and CNT sidewalls. This synergistic effect prevents the aggregation of graphene sheets, facilitates the dispersion of graphene and CNTs in the silicone matrix, and contributes to the superior properties of hybrid composites compared to composites with either of these fillers alone.

Graphene is a promising platform for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-active substrates, primarily due to the possibility of quenching photoluminescence and fluorescence. Here we study ultrathin gold films near the percolation threshold fabricated by electron-beam deposition on monolayer CVD graphene. The advantages of such hybrid graphene/gold substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy are discussed in comparison with conventional substrates without the graphene layer. The percolation threshold is determined by independent measurements of the sheet resistance and effective dielectric constant by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The surface morphology of the ultrathin gold films is analyzed by the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the thicknesses of the films in addition to the quartz-crystal mass-thickness sensor are also measured by AFM. We experimentally demonstrate that the maximum SERS signal is observed near and slightly below the percolation threshold. In this case, the region of maximum enhancement of the SERS signal can be determined using the figure of merit (FOM), which is the ratio of the real and imaginary parts of the effective dielectric permittivity of the films. SERS measurements on hybrid graphene/gold substrates with the dye Crystal Violet show an enhancement factor of ~105 and also demonstrate the ability of graphene to quench photoluminescence by an average of ~60%.

Plasmonic chemical and biological sensors offer significant advantages such as really compact sizes and extremely high sensitivity. Biosensors based on plasmonic waveguides and resonators are some of the most attractive candidates for mobile and wearable devices. However, high losses in the metal and complicated schemes for practical implementation make it challenging to find the optimal configuration of a compact plasmon biosensor. Here, we propose a novel plasmonic refractive index sensor based on a metal strip waveguide placed under a waveguide-based racetrack ring resonator made of the same metal. This scheme guarantees effective coupling between the waveguide and resonator and low loss light transmittance through the long-range waveguide. The proposed device can be easily fabricated (e.g., using optical lithography) and integrated with materials like graphene oxide for providing adsorption of the biomolecules on the sensitive part of the optical elements. To analyze the properties of the designed sensing system, we performed numerical simulations along with some analytical estimations. There is one other interesting general feature of this sensing scheme that is worth pointing out before looking at its details. The sensitivity of the considered device can be significantly increased by surrounding the resonator with media of slightly different refractive indices, which allows sensitivity to reach a value of more than 1 μm per refractive index unit.

Graphene-metal hybrid nanostructures have attracted considerable attention due to their potential applications in nanophotonics and optoelectronics. The output characteristics of devices based on such nanostructures largely depend on the properties of the metals. Here, we study the optical, electrical and structural properties of continuous thin gold and copper films grown by electron beam evaporation on monolayer graphene transferred onto silicon dioxide substrates. We find that the presence of graphene has a significant effect on optical losses and electrical resistance, both for thin gold and copper films. Furthermore, the growth kinetics of gold and copper films vary greatly; in particular, we found here a significant dependence of the properties of thin copper films on the deposition rate, unlike gold films. Our work provides new data on the optical properties of gold and copper, which should be considered in modeling and designing devices with graphene-metal nanolayers.
