The Brazilian strategy to overcome the spread of COVID-19 has been particularly criticized due to the lack of a national coordinating effort and an appropriate testing program. Here, a successful approach to control the spread of COVID-19 transmission is described by the engagement of public (university and governance) and private sectors (hospitals and oil companies) in Macaé, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a city known as the National Oil Capital. In 2020 between the 17th and 38th epidemiological week, over two percent of the 206,728 citizens were subjected to symptom analysis and RT-qPCR testing by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with positive individuals being notified up to 48 h after swab collection. Geocodification and spatial cluster analysis were used to limit COVID-19 spreading in Macaé. Within the first semester after the outbreak of COVID-19 in Brazil, Macaé recorded 1.8% of fatalities associated with COVID-19 up to the 38th epidemiological week, which was at least five times lower than the state capital (10.6%). Overall, considering the successful experience of this joint effort of private and public engagement in Macaé, our data suggest that the development of a similar strategy countrywise could have contributed to a better control of the COVID-19 spread in Brazil. Quarantine decree by the local administration, comprehensive molecular testing coupled to scientific analysis of COVID-19 spreading, prevented the catastrophic consequences of the pandemic as seen in other populous cities within the state of Rio de Janeiro and elsewhere in Brazil.

Overall, considering the successful experience of this joint effort of private and public engagement in Macaé, our data suggest that the development of a similar strategy country wise would have saved over 50,000 lives. Interpretation: Quarantine decree by the local government, molecular massive testing coupled to scientific analysis of COVID-19 spreading prevented the catastrophic consequences of the pandemic as seen in other populous cities within the state of Rio de Janeiro and elsewhere in Brazil.

Despite extensive taxonomic work on the Neotropical fauna of the spider genus Micrathena Sundevall, for 27 out of 117 (23%) species only the female morphology has been described, and some of the previously hypothesized male-female matches have been proven erroneous. This work provides new insight about sex matching in two species: Micrathena ruschii (Mello-Leitão, 1945) and Micrathena lata Chickering, 1960. For Micrathena ruschii, the male previously hypothesized to belong to this species was collected with females in Itatiaia; we here present morphologically different males, also collected with females, in Macaé, both in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Through a DNA barcoding approach, we present molecular evidence indicating conspecificity of M. ruschii females with the males collected in Macaé, proving the male from Itatiaia to be a misidentification. Therefore, a description of the correct male of Micrathena ruschii is herein provided. The male previously identified as M. ruschii probably represents an undescribed species but is not named here due to scarcity of material. We also describe for the first time the male of Micrathena lata based on one specimen collected in Misiones, Argentina. This male specimen belongs to the militaris species group, where M. lata is the only species from the Atlantic Forest previously only known by females. In addition, we detect an intersexual specimen of Micrathena ruschii, revealing the first case of intersexuality for the genus.

Os artropodes possuem o maior numero de especies dentro do reino animal e possuem tambem uma grande variabilidade morfologica. No Brasil, nosso grupo tem focado em estudar o desenvolvimento embrionario de organismos pertencentes ao filo Arthropoda, particularmente de organismos vetores de doencas ou causadores de grandes prejuizos economicos, como as pragas de estocagem. Estes estudos tem revelado similaridades e diferencas na biologia do desenvolvimento dos artropodes. Entre os estagios embrionarios conservados encontra-se a banda germinal, que e bastante similar para todo o grupo (estagio filotipico), enquanto que os estagios iniciais, sob influencia maternal e os estagios finais da embriogenese, sao mais distintos. Estes resultados, junto com demais resultados da literatura, evidenciam uma historia evolutiva comum e a constituicao de um grupo monofiletico dentre os artropodes. Com o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias e o surgimento da Biologia Evolutiva do Desenvolvimento (EVO-DEVO), tem sido possivel investigar o controle morfogenetico do desenvolvimento embrionario e pos-embrionario, comparando grupos taxonomicos distintos. No presente trabalho discutiremos a importância de ter outros organismos modelo alem da mosca-da-fruta (Drosophila melanogaster) para estudos de biologia do desenvolvimento de artropodes. Estes estudos incluem especies de interesse medico como o hemiptera Rhodnius prolixus e o carrapato Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) bem como pragas de estocagem, o besouro Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera).
