Abstract

Gaseous emissions which may be of odour impact and interest are not solely derived from industrial processes or agricultural fields, but also from natural sources. Natural odorous gaseous emissions are often present in geothermal areas. In these cases, the inventory and the measurement of the emitted gas flows are not trivial. This work presents the experience of an olfactometric survey conducted in a geothermal-interest area, specifically around Mt. Amiata, Tuscany, Italy. Dynamic olfactometry analyses showed odour concentrations in the order of millions of ouE/m3. While the main constituent of these natural gas emissions was CO2, the very high odour concentration data primarily resulted from the high portion of H2S in these emissions, with detected concentrations ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 ppmv. This not only indicates the presence of odour impact potential but also the high risk for people in the nearby area due to the high concentration of this gas. In parallel with the measurement of representative concentration data of these spot vents, a flexible and innovative approach was established for the measurement of emitted gas flow. The main breakthrough was obtained via the revamping of a balometer, a tool used for the measurement of indoor airflows, in the measurement of the gas flow of large spot vents (i.e. mine gates). Thanks to this stretchy approach, it was possible to estimate the OER of these emissions: the overall OER of all the inventory of the investigated spot vents in the area was impressive, and reached almost 10 million of ouE/s.

Abstract

Abstract Residual flux and angular distribution of high-energy cosmic muons have been measured in two underground locations at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) using a dedicated Muon Monitor. The instrument consists of three layers of fast scintillation detector modules operating as 352 independent pixels. The monitor has a flux-defining area of $$1~\hbox {m}^{2}$$ 1m2 and covers all azimuth angles, and zenith angles up to $$80^{\circ }$$ 80∘ . The measured integrated muon flux is $$(5.26 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-3}~\hbox {m}^{-2}\hbox {s}^{-1}$$ (5.26±0.21)×10-3m-2s-1 in the Hall A of the LAB2400 and $$(4.29 \,\pm \, 0.17) \times 10^{-3}~\hbox {m}^{-2}\hbox {s}^{-1}$$ (4.29±0.17)×10-3m-2s-1 in LAB2500. The angular dependence is consistent with the known profile and rock density of the surrounding mountains. In particular, there is a clear maximum in the flux coming from the direction of the Rioseta valley.

Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) collaboration searched for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay in $^{76}$Ge with an array of about 40 high-purity isotopically-enriched germanium detectors. The experimental signature of the decay is a monoenergetic signal at Q$_{\beta\beta}$ = 2039.061(7)keV in the measured summed energy spectrum of the two emitted electrons. Both the energy reconstruction and resolution of the germanium detectors are crucial to separate a potential signal from various backgrounds, such as neutrino-accompanied double-$\beta$ decays allowed by the Standard Model. The energy resolution and stability were determined and monitored as a function of time using data from regular $^{228}$Th calibrations. In this work, we describe the calibration process and associated data analysis of the full GERDA dataset, tailored to preserve the excellent resolution of the individual germanium detectors when combining data over several years., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment searched for the lepton-number-violating neutrinoless double-$\beta$ ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{76}$Ge, whose discovery would have far-reaching implications in cosmology and particle physics. By operating bare germanium diodes, enriched in $^{76}$Ge, in an active liquid argon shield, GERDA achieved an unprecedently low background index of $5.2\times10^{-4}$ counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr) in the signal region and met the design goal to collect an exposure of 100 kg$\cdot$yr in a background-free regime. When combined with the result of Phase I, no signal is observed after 127.2 kg$\cdot$yr of total exposure. A limit on the half-life of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{76}$Ge is set at $T_{1/2}>1.8\times10^{26}$ yr at 90% C.L., which coincides with the sensitivity assuming no signal., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We present the first search for bosonic superweakly interacting massive particles (super-WIMPs) as keV-scale dark matter candidates performed with the GERDA experiment. GERDA is a neutrinoless double-s decay experiment which operates high-purity germanium detectors enriched in ^{76}Ge in an ultralow background environment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of INFN in Italy. Searches were performed for pseudoscalar and vector particles in the mass region from 60 keV/c^{2} to 1 MeV/c^{2}. No evidence for a dark matter signal was observed, and the most stringent constraints on the couplings of super-WIMPs with masses above 120 keV/c^{2} have been set. As an example, at a mass of 150 keV/c^{2} the most stringent direct limits on the dimensionless couplings of axionlike particles and dark photons to electrons of g_{ae}

Abstract

In A symmetric theory of electrons and positrons [1] of 1937 Majorana published his theoretical discovery of the completely neutral spinors. Among the known elementary particles, neutrinos may be such, namely equal to their antiparticles. Other cases are hypothetically foreseen by Supersymmetry, such as the neutralino and the gluino. The Majorana solution of the Dirac equation, his representation of the Dirac γ matrices and the properties of his spinor are described in the first chapter of this book by A. Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (Gerda) experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) of INFN is searching for neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay of 76Ge. The technological challenge of Gerda is to operate in a “background-free” regime in the region of interest (ROI) after analysis cuts for the full 100 kg·yr target exposure of the experiment. A careful modeling and decomposition of the full-range energy spectrum is essential to predict the shape and composition of events in the ROI around Qββ for the 0νββ search, to extract a precise measurement of the half-life of the double-beta decay mode with neutrinos (2νββ) and in order to identify the location of residual impurities. The latter will permit future experiments to build strategies in order to further lower the background and achieve even better sensitivities. In this article the background decomposition prior to analysis cuts is presented for Gerda Phase II. The background model fit yields a flat spectrum in the ROI with a background index (BI) of $$ {16.04}_{-0.85}^{+0.78}\cdotp {10}^{-3} $$ 16.04 − 0.85 + 0.78 · 10 − 3 cts/(keV·kg·yr) for the enriched BEGe data set and $$ {14.68}_{-0.52}^{+0.47}\cdotp {10}^{-3} $$ 14.68 − 0.52 + 0.47 · 10 − 3 cts/(keV·kg·yr) for the enriched coaxial data set. These values are similar to the one of Phase I despite a much larger number of detectors and hence radioactive hardware components.

Abstract

The GERDA experiment searches for the lepton-number-violating neutrinoless double-β decay of ^{76}Ge (^{76}Ge→^{76}Se+2e^{-}) operating bare Ge diodes with an enriched ^{76}Ge fraction in liquid argon. The exposure for broad-energy germanium type (BEGe) detectors is increased threefold with respect to our previous data release. The BEGe detectors feature an excellent background suppression from the analysis of the time profile of the detector signals. In the analysis window a background level of 1.0_{-0.4}^{+0.6}×10^{-3} counts/(keV kg yr) has been achieved; if normalized to the energy resolution this is the lowest ever achieved in any 0νββ experiment. No signal is observed and a new 90% C.L. lower limit for the half-life of 8.0×10^{25} yr is placed when combining with our previous data. The expected median sensitivity assuming no signal is 5.8×10^{25} yr.

Abstract

An observation of neutrinoless double beta ([Formula: see text]) decay would allow to shed light onto the nature of neutrinos. Gerda (GERmanium Detector Array) aims to discover this process in a background-free search using [Formula: see text]Ge. The experiment is located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) in Italy. Bare, isotopically enriched, high purity germanium detectors are operated in liquid argon. Gerda follows a staged approach. In Phase II 35.6 kg of enriched germanium detectors are operated since December 2015. The application of active background rejection methods, such as a liquid argon scintillation light read-out and pulse shape discrimination of germanium detector signals, allows to reduce the background index to the intended level of [Formula: see text] cts/(keV⋅kg⋅yr). No evidence for the [Formula: see text] decay has been found in 23.2 kg⋅yr of Phase II data, and together with data from Phase I the up-to-date most stringent half-life limit for this process in [Formula: see text]Ge has been established, at a median sensitivity of 5.8⋅10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]yr the 90[Formula: see text]% C.L. lower limit is 8.0⋅10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]yr.

Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment, located at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory in Italy, is built for the search of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{76}$Ge. GERDA operates bare high purity germanium detectors submersed in liquid Argon (LAr). Phase I of the experiment was completed reaching an exposure of about 21 kg$\cdot$yr with a background level of $10^{-2}$ cts/(ke V $\cdot$ kg $\cdot$ yr). GERDA Phase I set a limit on the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{76}$Ge of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu} > 2.1 \cdot 10^{25}$ yr. In Phase II 35 kg of germanium detectors enriched in $^{76}$Ge are operated to reach an exposure of 100 kg$\cdot$yr. The design goal is to reduce the background by one order of magnitude to reach the sensitivity for $T_{1/2}^{0\nu} = \mathcal{O} (10^{26} )$ yr. The Phase II setup comprises thirty newly produced Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detectors. They contribute to the background reduction with better energy resolution and enhanced pulse shape discrimination. To achieve the necessary background reduction, the setup was complemented with LAr veto. The hardware upgrade for Phase II was finished and all detectors were deployed in December 2015. We present the first results of Phase II with 10.8 kg$\cdot$yr exposure reached in June 2016.

Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment located at the INFN Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy), is looking for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge76, by using high-purity germanium detectors made from isotopically enriched material. The combination of the novel experimental design, the careful material selection for radio-purity and the active/passive shielding techniques result in a very low residual background at the Q-value of the decay, about 1e-3 counts/(keV kg yr). This makes GERDA the first experiment in the field to be background-free for the complete design exposure of 100 kg yr. A search for neutrinoless double beta decay was performed with a total exposure of 47.7 kg yr: 23.2 kg yr come from the second phase (Phase II) of the experiment, in which the background is reduced by about a factor of ten with respect to the previous phase. The analysis presented in this paper includes 12.4 kg yr of new Phase II data. No evidence for a possible signal is found: the lower limit for the half-life of Ge76 is 8.0e25 yr at 90% CL. The experimental median sensitivity is 5.8e25 yr. The experiment is currently taking data. As it is running in a background-free regime, its sensitivity grows linearly with exposure and it is expected to surpass 1e26 yr within 2018., 8 pages, to appear in the proceedings of TAUP2017

Abstract

The energy distribution of the neutron background was measured for the first time at Hall A of the Canfranc Underground Laboratory. For this purpose we used a novel approach based on the combination of the information obtained with six large high-pressure 3 He proportional counters embedded in individual polyethylene blocks of different size. In this way not only the integral value but also the flux distribution as a function of neutron energy was determined in the range from 1 eV to 10 MeV. This information is of importance because different underground experiments show different neutron background energy dependence. The high sensitivity of the setup allowed to measure a neutron flux level which is about four orders of magnitude smaller that the neutron background at sea level. The integral value obtained is Φ Hall A = ( 3.44 ± 0.35 ) × 10 - 6 cm −2 s −1 .

Abstract

Internal contaminations of $^{238}$U, $^{235}$U and $^{232}$Th in the bulk of high purity germanium detectors are potential backgrounds for experiments searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge. The data from GERDA Phase~I have been analyzed for alpha events from the decay chain of these contaminations by looking for full decay chains and for time correlations between successive decays in the same detector. No candidate events for a full chain have been found. Upper limits on the activities in the range of a few nBq/kg for $^{226}$Ra, $^{227}$Ac and $^{228}$Th, the long-lived daughter nuclides of $^{238}$U, $^{235}$U and $^{232}$Th, respectively, have been derived. With these upper limits a background index in the energy region of interest from $^{226}$Ra and $^{228}$Th contamination is estimated which satisfies the prerequisites of a future ton scale germanium double beta decay experiment., Comment: 2 figures, 7 pages

Abstract

Neutrinoless double electron capture is a process that, if detected, would give evidence of lepton number violation and the Majorana nature of neutrinos. A search for neutrinoless double electron capture of $^{36}$Ar has been performed with germanium detectors installed in liquid argon using data from Phase I of the GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment at the Gran Sasso Laboratory of INFN, Italy. No signal was observed and an experimental lower limit on the half-life of the radiative neutrinoless double electron capture of $^{36}$Ar was established: $T_{1/2} > $ 3.6 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ yr at 90 % C.I.

Abstract

In this chapter, we study different types of interference phenomena. Interference happens when two or more waves having a phase relation with one another fixed in time overlap in a region of space. We study Young’s two-slit experiment and then the coherence conditions, namely the conditions that must be satisfied for interference phenomena to be observable. After having introduced diffraction with Grimaldi’s discovery, we treat the phenomenon under Fraunhofer conditions in the important cases of the slit, the circular aperture, randomly distributed centers and the diffraction grating. Finally, we study the close relations between the physics of diffraction and the mathematics of the Fourier transform.

In the first part of this chapter, we study oscillating systems with two (and subsequently with n) degrees of freedom. We learn the existence of particular motions, the normal modes, in which all parts of the system oscillate together harmonically. The number of modes, and the number of resonances, is equal to the number of degrees of freedom. We then study the modes of a vibrating sting. In the second part of the chapter, we study Fourier analysis, in regard to both periodic and non-periodic functions and for functions of both time and space.

Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss two subjects in which diffraction is the dominant process in image formation. The first argument, developed in the first two sections, is the Abbe theory of image formation. The theory is valid in general, but is easier to understand under conditions of coherence. The second argument, developed in the subsequent sections, deals with those actual three-dimensional images known as holograms. In a hologram, both the amplitude and the phase of the wave produced by the object are recorded, using coherent illumination.

In this chapter, we study the oscillations of systems with one degree of freedom, both mechanical and electric. We deal with free, damped and forced oscillations and study the resonance phenomenon.

Abstract

Charm D-meson production in 360 GeV π−p interactions has been studied using the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the European Hybrid Spectrometer. The data show evidence for leading quark effects both in the number of D-meson types and in the Feynman x distributions. The production cross section is of the form d 2 δ d x d p T 2 ∞(1-x) n exp (-ap T 2 ) with n = 2.8±0.8 and a = 1.1±0.3 (GeV/c)−2. The x distribution is, however, compatible with the presence of both central (n = 6) and leading (n = 1) D / D production. The fraction of D-messons in the leading component is estimated to be ≈30%. The rapidity gap between members of reconstructed charm pairs is small compared to the available rapidity range. The inclusive cross section for single D-messons in the forward direction is: δ(D/ D )=(40 8 +15 )μ b ( for x>0) .

Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) is a low background experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of INFN designed to search for the rare neutrinoless double beta decay ([Formula: see text]) of [Formula: see text]Ge. In the first phase (Phase I) of the experiment, high purity germanium diodes were operated in a “bare” mode and immersed in liquid argon. The overall background level of [Formula: see text] was a factor of ten better than those of its predecessors. No signal was found and a lower limit was set on the half-life for the [Formula: see text] decay of [Formula: see text]Ge [Formula: see text] yr (90% CL), while the corresponding median sensitivity was [Formula: see text] yr (90% CL). A second phase (Phase II) started at the end of 2015 after a major upgrade. Thanks to the increased detector mass and performance of the enriched germanium diodes and due to the introduction of liquid argon instrumentation techniques, it was possible to reduce the background down to [Formula: see text]. After analyzing 23.2 kg[Formula: see text]⋅[Formula: see text]yr of these new data no signal was seen. Combining these with the data from Phase I a stronger half-life limit of the [Formula: see text]Ge [Formula: see text] decay was obtained: [Formula: see text] yr (90% CL), reaching a sensitivity of [Formula: see text] yr (90% CL). Phase II will continue for the collection of an exposure of 100 kg[Formula: see text]yr. If no signal is found by then the GERDA sensitivity will have reached [Formula: see text] yr for setting a 90% CL. limit. After the end of GERDA Phase II, the flagship experiment for the search of [Formula: see text] decay of [Formula: see text]Ge will be LEGEND. LEGEND experiment is foreseen to deploy up to 1-ton of [Formula: see text]Ge. After ten years of data taking, it will reach a sensitivity beyond 10[Formula: see text] yr, and hence fully cover the inverted hierarchy region.

Abstract

Thermodynamics and statistical mechanics give complementary descriptions of the physical processes, from a macroscopic and microscopic point of view respectively. Matter is made of an enormous number of molecules. Statistical mechanics starts from the laws of mechanics to extract the equations governing the mean values of the molecular kinematical quantities and their statistical distributions. We develop the kinetic model of gases and learn the physical meaning of pressure and internal energy. We experimentally control the predictions of the model and see how classical mechanics reaches its validity limits. We study the molecule kinetic energy and velocity distributions, and the fundamental Boltzmann law. We finally demonstrate the physical reasons of why microscopic phenomena are reversible, macroscopic ones are not and understand the physical meanings of entropy and of the second law of thermodynamics.

Abstract

This chapter deals with the magnetic properties of matter. We consider three classes of material: diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic. Two new vector fields are introduced, needed to describe magnetism in matter: magnetization, which is the magnetic moment per unit volume, and the auxiliary H-field. The latter is somewhat similar to the D-field in electricity but its role is much more relevant. The magnetic phenomena in matter are due to the behavior of the atomic and molecular constituents. Even if the correct laws are those of quantum physics, we try to give an approximate classical description. We conclude with a discussion of ferromagnetic materials and their uses.

Abstract

Physical laws must always be experimentally verified. Experiment is the sole judge of the scientific truth. Consequently, any physical quantity must be measurable, namely the set of operations to be performed to measure it must be defined. In particular, a system of units of measurement must be defined. The International Unit system will be described. The mathematical properties of vectors will be discussed. In the second part of the chapter we shall deal with the kinematics of the point like particle, namely the study of its motion, independently of its causes. We shall introduce the vector quantities velocity, angular velocity and acceleration.
