The purpose of this study is to investigate empathy skill levels of children with high functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome between the ages of 9 to 16 in terms of diagnosis, age and gender variables and compare the results with typically developed peers. This study was designed as a relational survey method, which is one of the descriptive methods. The subjects were 28 children with autism spectrum disorder (HFA and AS) and 42 typically developed children. Data collected via an adapted version of the “Empathy Scale for Children” and demographic forms. The results indicated a significant difference in empathy skill levels of the children with different diagnosis. The study reveals that children with high functioning autism (HFA) have lower empathic skills, whereas children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) do not differ from typically developed (TD) children in terms of empathic skill levels. Female children with HFA have a higher performance on a self-report empathy questionnaire than male children with HFA and there is no significant difference between females with HFA, AS and TD females. Bu araştırmanın amacı otizmli çocuğu olan anne babaların yaşam doyumları, algıladıkları sosyal destek ve umut düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin bazı değişkenler açısından incelenmesidir. Çalışmada betimsel araştırma yöntemlerinden genel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya otizmli çocuğu olan 151 anne baba katılmıştır. Araştırma verileri ölçme araçlarının online platformlar üzerinden yanıtlanması ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin alınmasında sonra gerekli istatistiksel işlemler yapılarak araştırma sonuçları elde edilmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre otizmli çocuğu olan anne babaların yaşam doyumu, algıladıkları sosyal destek ve umut düzeyleri orta derecede olumlu olduğu görülmüştür. Algılanan sosyal desteğin tek başına yaşam doyumunun %48,4’ünü açıkladığı saptanmıştır. Ayrıca anne babaların eğitim düzeyi, çalışma ve ekonomik durumlarının yaşam doyumu, algılanan sosyal destek ve umut düzeyleri ile ilişkili olduğu bulunmuştur.

Theory of mind (ToM) has been applied in an attempt to explain the social impairments that characterize children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, an examination of several Turkish ToM studies revealed that ToM belief tests often have been used inappropriately to assess typically developing (TD) children and those adult versions of the Eyes Test and other ToM tests have been used inappropriately to assess adults with psychiatric disorders. Among the studies examined, none had used advanced ToM tests such as the Eyes Test and the Strange Stories Test to compare TD children and children with autism. The objective of this study was to examine the ToM levels attained by children with autism and TD children between the ages of 7 and 13 years, using the advanced ToM Strange Stories and Eyes tests. Compared with ASD children, TD children achieved higher scores on the Eyes and Strange Stories tests.

Amaç: Bu araştırmanın amacı, özel öğrenme güçlüğü olan 9-10 yaşları arasındaki 3 öğrenciye analog saatlerde gösterilen tam, buçuk, çeyrek geçe, çeyrek kala, dakika geçe ve dakika kala saatlerin kaç olduğunu söyleme, rakamlarla yazma ve rakamlarla yazılan saati çizerek gösterme becerileri öğretimi için hazırlanan etkinlik temelli öğretim programının etkililiğini ve genellenebilirliğini incelemektir.Yöntem: Araştırmada, tek denekli araştırma yöntemlerinden denekler arası çoklu başlama düzeyi deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın deneysel süreci, beceri analizinin hazırlanması, etkinliklerin hazırlanması, etkinlikler için materyallerin hazırlanması ile başlama düzeyi, öğretim, son değerlendirme ve genelleme oturumlarından oluşmaktadır. İlk aşamada saat okuma becerisinin beceri analizi yapılmış ve 18 kazanım belirlenmiştir. Belirlenen bu 18 kazanımın öğretimi için üç etkinlik ve üç materyal tasarlanmıştır. Öğretim oturumları planlanmış üç etkinlik ile yürütülmüştür.Bulgular: Sekiz öğretim oturumu sonunda, üç katılımcının da hedeflenen kazanımlardan tam saatler, yarım saatler, çeyrek geçeli saatler, çeyrek kalalı saatler ve dakika geçeli saatler ile ilgili kazanımları edindiği görülmüştür. Üç katılımcı da hedeflenen kazanımların %83’ünü kazanmıştır. Ayrıca, katılımcıların bu becerileri farklı ortamlarda, farlı materyallerle ve farklı kişilerle de genelleyebildiği belirlenmiştir.Sonuçlar ve Öneriler: Hazırlanan sekiz oturumluk etkinlik temelli analog saat okuma becerisi öğretiminin etkili olduğu düşünülmektedir. Bu yüzden, etkinlik temelli öğretim tekniğinin özel öğrenme güçlüğü olan öğrencilere saat okuma becerisi öğretiminde kullanılabilecek bir yöntem oluğu düşünülmektedir., Purpose: The aim of the study is to examine the effectiveness and generalization of the activity based teaching programme that is prepared for teaching 3 students between the ages of 9-10 with specific learning disabilities how to tell the exact hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to, minutes past and minutes to shown in analogue clocks, how to write them in numbers and draw the time written in numbers.Design & Methodology: In the study, the multiple baseline design across subjects which is one of the single-subject research designs was used. The experimental process consist of task analysis, preparation of activities, preparation of materials for activities and determination of initial level, teaching, final assessment and generalization sessions. A task analysis of clock reading skills was performed and 18 gains were determined. 3 activities and 3 materials were designed for teaching these 18 determined gains. The teaching sessions were conducted with 3 activities.Findings: After 8 teaching sessions, all three participants who participated in the research reached the targets related to timings such as exact hours, half past, quarter past, quarter to and minutes past. All three subjects achieved 83% of the targeted gains. Furthermore, it was determined that the subjects were able to generalize the skills acquired in the teaching sessions in different environments, with different materials and with different people.Implications & Suggestions: The 8-session activity based analog clock reading skills teaching programme is thought to be effective. Therefore, activity based teaching can be used in clock reading skill teaching to students with specific learning disabilities.

Bu çalışmada, ilköğretim okullarında birinci kademede eğitim alan otizm tanılı öğrencilerin akranlarıyla ilişkilerini, okula uyumlarını ve sosyal kabullerini artırmak amacıyla geliştirilmiş olan bir eğitim programının etkililiği incelenmiştir. Araştırma, İzmir ilinde bulunan beş ilköğretim okulunda 2011-2012 eğitim-öğretim yılında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma deseni olarak “ön test - son test kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen” ve nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden görüşme kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın bağımsız değişkenini “eğitim programı”, bağımlı değişkelerini akranların sosyal kabulleri, okula uyumları, öğretmen ve akran merkezli sosyal davranışları oluşturmaktadır. Verilerin toplanmasında; ‘Sosyal Kabul Ölçeği’, Sosyometri, “Öğretmen Görüşme Formu” ve Kişisel Bilgi Formu’ kullanılmıştır. Bulgular, akran ilişkilerini geliştirmek üzere hazırlanmış olan eğitim programının, akranların sosyal kabulleri ve otizmli öğrencilerin sosyal yeterlilik ve okula uyum davranışları üzerinde etkili olduğunu göstermiştir.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to determine the injury risk behaviors and home safety measures in children with an intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder. METHOD: The study sample included mothers of 100 children between the ages of 2 and 12 years. FINDINGS: There was a significant difference between the home safety measures and the children's ages, the birth order of the children, and the mother's and father's ages. The statistics of the Ministry of National Education (MEB) show that the number of students who are pursuing their education in general education environments in scope of inclusion programs is increasing every year. It is observed that the number of special needs students who continue their secondary education after primary education is increasing with the regulation that makes it mandatory to have 12 years of education. While directing special needs (SN) students towards secondary education, families and experts prefer vocational high schools where these students can learn functional skills. This is why the opinions of teachers who work at vocational high schools are important. The purpose of this study is to investigate the opinions of technical teachers working at vocational high schools, school counsellors, culture course teachers and special education teachers providing support education to students on the processes of vocational counselling, training and employment of special needs students. Towards this purpose, semi-structured interviews were held with a total of 59 teachers using a form prepared by the researchers. The findings indicated that the opinions of technical teachers at vocational high schools on inclusion and continuation of SN students in vocational high schools were more negative in comparison to those of culture course teachers and school counsellors, and there were significant shortcomings in the professional training of SN students. It was also seen that special needs teachers were not sufficiently informed about the job prospects and employment of SN students, and they used limited opportunities for their students.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the usage levels of metacognitive reading strategies by students diagnosed with specific learning disability (SLD), academic self-efficacy and the concept of self, in comparison to their typically developing (TD) peers. The data to be used in the study were collected using the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory, the Academic Self-efficacy Scale, the Piers-Harris Children’s Self-concept Scale and the Demographics Information Form. The study was conducted among a total of 119 students in the fifth,sixth, seventh and eighth grades in İzmir Province, including 59 students diagnosed with SLD and 60 TD students. Considering the results of the study, in comparison to TD students, students diagnosed with SLD were significantly inadequate in terms of the usage levels of metacognitive reading strategies, levels of academic self-efficacy, and the intelligence/school subdimensions of the concept of self.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a tablet computer-aided intervention program for improving reading fluency. It also investigates the opinions of students and parents about this intervention by using skill- and performance-based techniques, which have been investigated qualitatively. Three students with a learning disability who are in the third or fourth grades participated in the study. The multiple baselines across participants design which is one of the single-subject experimental models has been used as an experimental design and results are presented with graphics. The findings show that the tablet computer-aided intervention program improved the reading fluency of the students with a learning disability. According to the qualitative data, the students' views about the tablet computer-aided reading fluency intervention were generally positive, indicating that this study was fun and motivated them to study. Although the parents had concerns that studying with a tablet could be perceived as a means of entertainment, they also thought the intervention was effective and wanted their children to have access to a tablet computer for educational purposes.

It is known that children with autism are insufficient in building empathy. A part of the difficulties in social interaction may originate from the lack of empathy. This research consists of two studies. First study is adaptation of the “Child Empathy Systemizing Quotient” (EQ-SQ) to Turkish culture which is prepared considering the behaviour characteristics of children in the Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) group, and realizing its validity and reliability. This research is conducted with 760 children with typical development processes, aged 9 – 16. The findings show that the Turkish EQ-SQ is a valid and reliable tool. The second study is conducted with 112 children, 32 of them having ASC and 80 not. Through this quotient, the empathy and systematizing abilities of children with ASC are compared with their peers who demonstrate typical development processes. The EQ-SQ levels of the participants are evaluated with their mothers and their demographical values are taken from the mothers. In line with the findings in the literature, the empathy skills of children diagnosed with ASC are significantly lower than children with typical development processes. Among the children with typical development processes, females’ empathy skills are shown to be significantly higher than males.

The purpose of this study is to examine psychometric properties of “Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test” for both children and adult forms. Adult study group consists of 268 participants between the age of 18 - 60 (59.7% female, 40.03% male). Children study group consists of 202 normally developed children and 33 children with autism between the ages of 6 to 16. In the study, 42.1% of children participants (N = 99) were female and 57.9% were male (N = 136). According to results, both forms have adequate internal consistency reliability (Cronbach Alpha value for adult form is 0.71 and for children form is 0.72). In children form, construct validity was examined in terms of age, gender and diagnosis and differentiation of this group were determined. Adults form is determined as a reliable and valid form for high school graduated individuals.

Bu çalışma, yaygın gelişimsel bozukluk tanılı çocukların anne babalarının bu tanı nedeniyle yaşadıkları yas sürecini, evlilik uyumlarını ve algıladıkları sosyal desteği etkileyen faktörleri incelemek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veriler, 3-18 yaş aralığında yaygın gelişimsel bozukluk (YGB) tanılı çocuğu olan gönüllü 103 anne-babaya uygulanan Hogan Yas Tepkileri Tarama Listesi, Çiftler Uyum Ölçeği, Çok Boyutlu Algılanan Sosyal Destek Ölçeği ve Kişisel Bilgi Formu kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Yaş, evlilik uyumu ve algılanan sosyal desteğin çeşitli demografik değişkenler açısından farklılaştığı bulunmuştur. YGB tanılı çocukların anne-babalarında yasın olumsuz yanını yordayan değişkenlerin annebabaların cinsiyet ve eğitim düzeyi, evlilik süresi, özel insan kategorisinden algılanan sosyal destek, arkadaş kategorisinden algılanan sosyal destek ve çift bağlılığı olduğu görülmüştür. Yasın olumlu yanını yordayan değişkenlerin ise anne-babanın cinsiyeti ve eğitim düzeyi, tanıdan sonra geçen süre ve çift uyumu olduğu belirlenmiştir. Sonuçlar ilgili alanyazın verileri ışığında tartışılmıştır.

When literature is examined, it is seen that generally there are descriptive studies examining the effects of young children with autism in a certain age or age range on their parents’ marital and family relationships as well as psychological conditions such as mourning, stress, anxiety, and depression. Longitudinal studies on the social experiences of parents of children with autism are scarce. It was observed that there was not a longitudinal study in Turkey, evaluating the emotional processes parents live through from the years when their children are diagnosed with autism until the university education, the changes they experience in family relations, the problems they encounter in their children’s education process, and the emotional-social support services they receive/do not receive. This study is a qualitative study that examines the 15–16 years of experience of autistic children’s parents by analyzing video interview records that were carried out using a semi-structured interview form. The results were examined under seven themes and five sub-themes, and the results that were obtained were in accordance with the literature.

In this study, children with learning disability (LD) were compared with children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) in terms of identifying emotions from photographs with certain face and body expressions. The sampleconsisted of a total of 82 children aged 7-19 years living in Izmir in Turkey. A total of 6 separate sets of slides,consisting of black and white photographs, were used to assess participants’ ability to identify feelings – 3 sets forfacial expressions, and 3 sets for body language. There were 20 photographs on the face slides and 38 photographson the body language slides. The results of the nonparametric Mann Whitney-U test showed no significant differencebetween the total scores that children received from each of the face and body language slide sets. It was observedthat the children with LD usually looked at the whole photo, while the children with ASD focused especially aroundthe mouth to describe feelings. The results that were obtained were discussed in the context of the literature, andsuggestions were presented.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the attitudes displayed by students without disabilities studying in Dokuz Eylul University towards people with disabilities, and their perceptions and observations regarding the types of discrimination faced by students with disabilities.Methods: The study was conducted with 1766 students attending faculty of education and faculty of health. The study data were collected using the ‘Attitudes Towards Disabled Persons’ (ATDP) Scale and a questionnaire prepared using the ‘discrimination based on disability’.Results: Of the students, 62.6% agreed with the statement ‘In Turkey, people with disabilities are discriminated against more than other members of society.’ Approximately 50% of the students participating in this study believed that discrimination against people with disabilities in Turkey at present was less than it was 10 years ago. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Asperger sendromu ve yüksek fonksiyonlu otizm (YFO) tanısı almış üç çocuğa uygulanan “resimlerle duygu öğretimi programı”nın etkililiğini incelemektir. Araştırmada, tek denekli araştırma modellerinden toplu yoklama evreli davranışlar arası çoklu yoklama modeli kullanılmıştır. Çalışma, ikisi Asperger sendromu, biri yüksek fonksiyonlu otizm tanılı, ilköğretime devam eden, üç erkek öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma bulguları, uygulanan programın etkili olduğunu göstermiştir. Birinci denek Ali siyah-beyaz fotoğraflardaki yüz ifadelerinden dört temel duygu olan mutlu, üzgün, kızgın, korkmuş duygularını tanımayı, ikinci denek Ahmet şematik çizimlerdeki yüz ifadelerinden aynı dört temel duyguyu tanımayı, üçüncü denek Mehmet, şematik çizimlerdeki karakterin isteklerinin gerçekleşip gerçekleşmemesi ile ilgili mutlu ve üzgün duygularını tanımayı öğrenmiştir. Bu çalışma, İzmir ilinde Eylül 1999 ve Haziran 2000 tarihleri arasında, üniversite hastaneleri çocuk psikiyatrisi kliniklerinde Asperger sendromu ve yüksek işlevli otizm tanısı almış olan, yaşları 20-48 ay arasında değişen, 28 çocukla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çocuklara TEACCH ve HANEN yaklaşımı temel alınarak hazırlanan eğitim programı beş yıl süre ile uygulanmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan çocukların anne-babalarından gönüllü olan 17 anne-babaya 16 hafta süren aile eğitim programı uygulanmıştır. Bu araştırmanın temel amacı, çalışma grubunu oluşturan çocukların uygulanan eğitim programından sağladıkları gelişmeyi, Psiko-Eğitimsel Profil Revize formu (PEP-R) ile taklit, algı, ince motor, kaba motor, el-göz koordinasyonu, bilişsel ve sözel olmak üzere yedi gelişimsel; ilişki ve duygulanım, oyun ve materyallere ilgi, dil, ve duyusal tepkilerden oluşan dört davranışsal alanda incelemektir. Çalışmacının diğer bir amacı, anne-babası aile eğitim programına katılan çocuklarla, katılmayan çocuklar arasında eğitimden yararlanma düzeyi açısından faklılık olup olmadığını belirlemektir. Çocukların başlangıç düzeyi performansları ve son değerlendirmeleri PEP-R kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bireyselleştirilmiş eğitim programları (BEP) TEACCH ve HANEN programlarından yararlanılarak hazırlanmıştır. Çocukların gelişimsel alanların hepsinde giriş becerileriyle çıkış becerileri arasında olumlu yönde anlamlı düzeyde artış ve otistik davranış özelliklerinde azalma olduğu istatistiksel olarak belirlenmiştir. Yirmialtı çocuk, ilköğretim yaşı geldiğinde kaynaştırma eğitimine katılabilecek düzeye ulaşarak ilköğretime başlamış, iki çocuk ise özel eğitim ilköğretim okuluna geçiş yapmıştır. Anne-babası eğitim programına katılan 17 çocuğun taklit ve kaba motor gelişim alanlarında kazanımlarının, anne-babası eğitim programına katılmayan 11 çocuktan anlamlı düzeyde daha fazla olduğu belirlenmiştir.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the attitudes toward marriage of siblings of individuals with disability/disabilities and some variables. The study group was formed from 65 female and 55 male -total 120 participants- who have a disabled sibling, between the ages of 18-30, unmarried, normally developed. Data was collected with "Attitudes Toward Marriage Scale" developed by Ertugrul (2008) and "Personal Information Form" developed by the researcher for the purpose of gathering information about some of the variables. The results of the research shows that / In conclusion / As a result attitudes toward marriage of female siblings of individuals with disabilities are more negative than attitudes toward marriage of male siblings of individuals with disabilities. Attitudes toward marriage of participants whose parents are living together are more positive than attitudes toward marriage of participants whose parents are separated. Attitudes toward marriage of siblings of individuals with severe disabilities are more negative than attitudes toward marriage of siblings of individuals with moderate and mild disabilities. Attitudes toward marriage of siblings of individuals with moderate disabilities are more negative than attitudes toward marriage of siblings of individuals with mild disabilities. Attitudes toward marriage of the oldest siblings are more negative than attitudes toward marriage of the other/younger siblings. There was no meaningful relationship between age, education level, gender of disabled siblings, inadequacy type, disability type of disabled siblings, family’s monthly salary, number of siblings and attitudes toward marriage of siblings of individuals with disabilities. Ozet Bu arastirmanin amaci, engelli kardesi olan bireylerin evlilige yonelik tutumlarinin bazi degiskenler ile olan iliskisini incelemektir. Arastirmanin calisma grubu, engelli bir kardese sahip olan, 18-30 yas arasinda, evli olmayan, normal gelisim gosteren, 65 kadin ve 55 erkek bireyden -toplam 120 katilimci- olusturulmustur. Veriler, Ertugrul (2008) tarafindan gelistirilen, gecerlik ve guvenirlik calismalari yapilmis olan “Evlilige Yonelik Tutum Olcegi” ile bazi degiskenler hakkinda bilgi toplanmasi amaciyla arastirmaci tarafindan hazirlanan “Kisisel Bilgi Formu” kullanilarak toplanmistir. Sonuc olarak, engelli kardesi olan kadinlarin evlilige yonelik tutumlari erkeklere gore daha olumsuzdur. Anne-babasi birlikte yasayan kardeslerin evlilige yonelik tutumlari, anne babasi birlikte yasamayanlarin tutumlarindan daha olumludur. Agir duzeyde engelli kardesi olanlarin evlilige yonelik tutumlari orta ve hafif duzeyde engelli kardesi olanlardan daha olumsuzdur. Kardesler arasinda yasi en buyuk olanlarin evlilige yonelik tutumlari yasi kucuk olanlardan daha olumsuzdur. Kardeslerin, yaslari, egitim duzeyleri, kardes sayisi, engelli kardesin cinsiyeti, yetersizlik turu, ailelerinin aylik geliri ile evlilige yonelik tutumlari arasinda anlamli bir iliski gozlemlenmemistir.

One of the objectives of this study is to investigate the views and experiences of university students regarding violence against women in terms of several variables. The other is to investigate the relationship between university students' views and experiences and their life satisfaction levels. The research group is 298 prospective teachers who attend Dokuz Eylül University Buca Faculty of Education. In order to determine the participants' demographic characteristics and their views and experiences regarding violence against women, an interview form, designed by the researchers, was used. Also, a Life Satisfaction Scale was used to identify their life satisfaction levels. The results reveal that female students support men-women equality in terms of financial freedom, career and domestic works more than male students do. However, female participants were found to have more traditional views in comparison to married women in terms of gender roles in regard to physical violence (beating). Life satisfaction levels of students who experienced violence in family were found meaningfully lower than the life satisfaction levels of those who did not. Similarly, life satisfaction levels of students whom witnessed violence in family were meaningfully lower than those who did not. It is thought that studies increasing prospective teachers' awareness to prevent violence against women create a mentality change and inform them about their legal rights and legal processes are needed., Bu araştırmanın amaçlarından biri, üniversite öğrencilerinin kadına yönelik şiddet hakkındaki görüşleri ve deneyimlerinin bazı değişkenler açısından incelenmesidir. Diğer amacı ise, üniversite öğrencilerinin kadına yönelik şiddete ilişkin görüşlerinin ve deneyimlerinin yaşam doyumları ile ilişkisinin araştırılmasıdır. Çalışma gurubu, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Buca Eğitim Fakültesi'nde öğrenim gören 298 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Katılımcıların sosyo demografik özelliklerini, şiddete ilişkin görüşlerini ve deneyimlerini belirlemek amacıyla araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen “Görüşme Formu” ve yaşam doyumu düzeylerini belirlemek için “Yaşam Doyumu Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar, kadın öğrencilerin ekonomik özgürlük, kariyer, ev işleri gibi alanlarda, kadın erkek eşitliği düşüncesini daha çok benimsediğini göstermektedir. Ancak kadın katılımcıların dayak konusunda; toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri açısından evli kadınlara göre daha geleneksel görüşlere sahip olduğu belirlenmiştir. Aile içinde şiddete maruz kalanların kalmayanlara göre, şiddete tanık olanların tanık olmayanlara göre yaşam doyumları anlamlı düzeyde daha düşük bulunmuştur. Öğretmen adaylarının “kadına yönelik şiddetin önlenmesi” konusunda farkındalıklarını arttırmak, zihniyet dönüşümünü sağlamak, yasal süreçler ve haklar konusunda bilgi edinmelerini sağlayacak çalışmalara gereksinim olduğunu düşünülmektedir.
