Data are divided in 4 numbered folders, organized as follows: Folder "1 - ZnO_PL_scans": This folder contains the raw data of ultrafast photoluminescence measurement. ZnO_full_time.pxp file (Igor Pro by WaveMetrics) is the ultrafast photoluminescence(PL) data obtained upon pumping at 4.66eV at different fluence :0.8, 2.3, 4.7, 5.4 (unit: mJ*cm-2), which are plotted in Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure S3, Figure S4, and Figure S5. time_0312cuts.txt, zno1812corr_wn_233nm.txt, PL_cut_fit2exp.ipynb are the time delay, time trace cut at PL peak, and python code for exponential fitting, respectively, which is plotted in Figure S7. ZnO Raman_rise.pxp contains the Raman data of water in comparison of rising of ZnO PL data, which is plotted in Figure S6. Folder "2 - ZnO_XANES_transient": This folder contains the raw data of Zn K-edge fs-XANES transients data measured in SACLA (2ps), which are plotted in Figure 3 and Figure 4. In the SACLA_APS_comparison_XANES.txt file: the headers "allDiff_N", "allscaler1S3_N", "fluonorm_diff_norm", indicates the transient data measured in APS (100ps), ground-state XAS, and the transient fs-XANES data measured in SACLA(2ps), repectively. Folder "3 - ZnO_XANES_timescan":This folder contains the fs-XANES time scan along with the fitting python code, which is plotted in Figure 5 and Figure S8. Folder "4 - ZnO_MD_Simulation" - This folder contains the result of ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, which is plotted in Figure 6.

We employ few-femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy to reveal simultaneously the intra- and interband carrier relaxation and the light-induced structural dynamics in nanoscale thin films of layered 2H-MoTe2 semiconductor. By interrogating the valence electronic structure via localized Te 4d (39-46 eV) and Mo 4p (35-38 eV) core levels, the relaxation of the photoexcited hole distribution is directly observed in real time. We obtain hole thermalization and cooling times of 15 ± 5 fs and 380 ± 90 fs, respectively, and an electron-hole recombination time of 1.5 ± 0.1 ps. Furthermore, excitations of coherent out-of-plane A1g (5.1 THz) and in-plane E1g (3.7 THz) lattice vibrations are visualized through oscillations in the XUV absorption spectra. By comparison to Bethe-Salpeter equation simulations, the spectral changes are mapped to real-space excited-state displacements of the lattice along the dominant A1g coordinate. By directly and simultaneously probing the excited carrier distribution dynamics and accompanying femtosecond lattice displacement in 2H-MoTe2 within a single experiment, our work provides a benchmark for understanding the interplay between electronic and structural dynamics in photoexcited nanomaterials.

An atomistic understanding of the photoinduced spin-state switching (PSS) within polynuclear systems of d4-d7 transition metal ion complexes is required for their rational integration into light-driven reactions of chemical and biological interest. However, in contrast to mononuclear systems, the multidimensional dynamics of the PSS in solvated molecular arrays have not yet been elucidated due to the expected complications associated with the connectivity between the metal centers and the strong interactions with the surroundings. In this work, the PSS in a solvated triiron(II) metallogrid complex is characterized using transient optical absorption and X-ray emission spectroscopies on the femtosecond time scale. The complementary measurements reveal the photoinduced creation of energy-rich (hot) and long-lived quintet states, whose dynamics differ critically from their mononuclear congeners. This finding opens major prospects for developing novel schemes in solution-phase spin chemistry that are driven by the dynamic PSS process in compact oligometallic arrays.

Polarized transient X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) was used to probe the excited-state structure of a photostable B12 antivitamin (Coβ-2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-ethynylcobalamin, F2PhEtyCbl). A drop-on-demand delivery system synchronized to the LCLS X-ray free electron laser pulses was implemented and used to measure the XANES difference spectrum 12 ps following excitation, exposing only ∼45 μL of sample. Unlike cyanocobalamin (CNCbl), where the Co-C bond expands 15-20%, the excited state of F2PhEtyCbl is characterized by little change in the Co-C bond, suggesting that the acetylide linkage raises the barrier for expansion of the Co-C bond. In contrast, the lower axial Co-NDMB bond is elongated in the excited state of F2PhEtyCbl by ca. 10% or more, comparable to the 10% elongation observed for Co-NDMB in CNCbl.

Time‐resolved X‐ray absorption spectroscopy has been utilized to monitor the bimolecular electron transfer in a photocatalytic water splitting system. This has been possible by uniting the local probe and element specific character of X‐ray transitions with insights from high‐level ab initio calculations. The specific target has been a heteroleptic [IrIII(ppy)2(bpy)]+ photosensitizer, in combination with triethylamine as a sacrificial reductant and Fe3(CO)12 as a water reduction catalyst. The relevant molecular transitions have been characterized via high‐resolution Ir L‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopy on the picosecond time scale and restricted active space self‐consistent field calculations. The presented methods and results will enhance our understanding of functionally relevant bimolecular electron transfer reactions and thus will pave the road to rational optimization of photocatalytic performance., The light induced dynamics of an Iridium‐based photosensitizer for hydrogen generation were studied by picosecond‐resolved X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) during the primary steps of the photocatalytic cycle. We used total fluorescence yield and high‐resolution energy detection (HERFD) XAS spectra to follow the oxidation state of the central metal of an iridium‐based photosensitizer subject to photoinduced electron transfer. The detailed analysis of the main X‐ray transitions from the ground and excited states are guided by high‐level ab initio calculations.

Femtosecond carrier dynamics in layered 2H-MoTe2 semiconductor crystals have been investigated using soft x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy at the x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory. Following above-bandgap optical excitation of 2H-MoTe2, the photoexcited hole distribution is directly probed via short-lived transitions from the Te 3d 5/2 core level (M5-edge, 572-577 eV) to transiently unoccupied states in the valence band. The optically excited electrons are separately probed via the reduced absorption probability at the Te M5-edge involving partially occupied states of the conduction band. A 400 ± 110 fs delay is observed between this transient electron signal near the conduction band minimum compared to higher-lying states within the conduction band, which we assign to hot electron relaxation. Additionally, the transient absorption signals below and above the Te M5 edge, assigned to photoexcited holes and electrons, respectively, are observed to decay concomitantly on a 1-2 ps timescale, which is interpreted as electron-hole recombination. The present work provides a benchmark for applications of XFELs for soft x-ray absorption studies of carrier-specific dynamics in semiconductors, and future opportunities enabled by this method are discussed.

We have used transient absorption spectroscopy in the UV-visible and X-ray regions to characterize the excited state of CarH, a protein photoreceptor that uses a form of B

7 pags., 5 figs., We have used transient absorption spectroscopy in the UV-visible and X-ray regions to characterize the excited state of CarH, a protein photoreceptor that uses a form of B12, adenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl), to sense light. With visible excitation, a nanosecond-lifetime photoactive excited state is formed with unit quantum yield. The time-resolved X-ray absorption near edge structure difference spectrum of this state demonstrates that the excited state of AdoCbl in CarH undergoes only modest structural expansion around the central cobalt, a behavior similar to that observed for methylcobalamin rather than for AdoCbl free in solution. We propose a new mechanism for CarH photoreactivity involving formation of a triplet excited state. This allows the sensor to operate with high quantum efficiency and without formation of potentially dangerous side products. Soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) is a multicomponent metalloenzyme that catalyzes the conversion of methane to methanol at ambient temperature using a nonheme, oxygen-bridged dinuclear iron cluster in the active site. Structural changes in the hydroxylase component (sMMOH) containing the diiron cluster caused by complex formation with a regulatory component (MMOB) and by iron reduction are important for the regulation of O(2) activation and substrate hydroxylation. Structural studies of metalloenzymes using traditional synchrotron-based X-ray crystallography are often complicated by partial X-ray-induced photoreduction of the metal center, thereby obviating determination of the structure of the enzyme in pure oxidation states. Here microcrystals of the sMMOH:MMOB complex from Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b were serially exposed to X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) pulses, where the [35 fs duration of exposure of an individual crystal yields diffraction data before photoreduction-induced structural changes can manifest. Merging diffraction patterns obtained from thousands of crystals generates radiation damage free, 1.95 Å resolution crystal structures for the fully oxidized and fully reduced states of the sMMOH:MMOB complex for the first time. The results provide new insight into the manner by which the diiron cluster and the active site environment are reorganized by the regulatory protein component in order to enhance the steps of oxygen activation and methane oxidation. This study also emphasizes the value of XFEL and serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) methods for investigating the structures of metalloenzymes with radiation sensitive metal active sites.

In the last ten years, x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) have been successfully employed to characterize metalloproteins at room temperature using various techniques including x-ray diffraction, scattering, and spectroscopy. The approach has been to outrun the radiation damage by using femtosecond (fs) x-ray pulses. An example of an important and damage sensitive active metal center is the Mn4CaO5 cluster in photosystem II (PS II), the catalytic site of photosynthetic water oxidation. The combination of serial femtosecond x-ray crystallography and K beta x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) has proven to be a powerful multimodal approach for simultaneously probing the overall protein structure and the electronic state of the Mn4CaO5 cluster throughout the catalytic (Kok) cycle. As the observed spectral changes in the Mn4CaO5 cluster are very subtle, it is critical to consider the potential effects of the intense XFEL pulses on the K beta XES signal. We report here a systematic study of the effects of XFEL peak power, beam focus, and dose on the Mn K beta(1,3) XES spectra in PS II over a wide range of pulse parameters collected over seven different experimental runs using both microcrystal and solution PS II samples. Our findings show that for beam intensities ranging from & SIM;5 x 10(15) to 5 x 10(17) W/cm(2) at a pulse length of & SIM;35 fs, the spectral effects are small compared to those observed between S-states in the Kok cycle. Our results provide a benchmark for other XFEL-based XES studies on metalloproteins, confirming the viability of this approach.

This work has demonstrated that X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), both Mn XANES and EXAFS, of solutions with millimolar concentrations of metal is possible using the femtosecond X-ray pulses from XFELs. Mn XAS data were collected using two different sample delivery methods, a Rayleigh jet and a drop-on-demand setup, with varying concentrations of Mn. Here, a new method for normalization of XAS spectra based on solvent scattering that is compatible with data collection from a highly variable pulsed source is described. The measured XANES and EXAFS spectra of such dilute solution samples are in good agreement with data collected at synchrotron sources using traditional scanning protocols. The procedures described here will enable XFEL-based XAS on dilute biological samples, especially metalloproteins, with low sample consumption. Details of the experimental setup and data analysis methods used in this XANES and EXAFS study are presented. This method will also benefit XAS performed at high-repetition-rate XFELs such as the European XFEL, LCLS-II and LCLS-II-HE.

Femtosecond-resolved Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurements of solvated transition metal complexes are successfully implemented at the X-ray Free Electron Laser LCLS. Benchmark experiments on [Fe(terpy)2]2+ in solution show a signal-to-noise ratio on the order of 500, comparable to typical 100 ps-resolution synchrotron measurements. In the few femtoseconds after photoexcitation, we observe the EXAFS fingerprints of a short-lived (∼100 fs) intermediate as well as those of a vibrationally hot long-lived (∼ns) excited state.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) draw strong interest in materials science, with applications in optoelectronics and many other fields. Good performance requires high carrier concentrations and long lifetimes. However, high concentrations accelerate energy exchange between charged particles by Auger-type processes, especially in TMDs where many-body interactions are strong, thus facilitating carrier trapping. We report time-resolved optical pump-THz probe measurements of carrier lifetimes as a function of carrier density. Surprisingly, the lifetime reduction with increased density is very weak. It decreases only by 20% when we increase the pump fluence 100 times. This unexpected feature of the Auger process is rationalized by our time-domain

We have employed a range of ultrafast X-ray spectroscopies in an effort to characterize the lowest energy excited state of [Fe(dcpp)2]2+ (where dcpp is 2,6-(dicarboxypyridyl)pyridine). This compound exhibits an unusually short excited-state lifetime for a low-spin Fe(II) polypyridyl complex of 270 ps in a room-temperature fluid solution, raising questions as to whether the ligand-field strength of dcpp had pushed this system beyond the 5T2/3T1 crossing point and stabilizing the latter as the lowest energy excited state. Kα and Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopies have been used to unambiguously determine the quintet spin multiplicity of the long-lived excited state, thereby establishing the 5T2 state as the lowest energy excited state of this compound. Geometric changes associated with the photoinduced ligand-field state conversion have also been monitored with extended X-ray absorption fine structure. The data show the typical average Fe-ligand bond length elongation of ∼0.18 Å for a 5T2 state and suggest a high anisotropy of the primary coordination sphere around the metal center in the excited 5T2 state, in stark contrast to the nearly perfect octahedral symmetry that characterizes the low-spin 1A1 ground state structure. This study illustrates how the application of time-resolved X-ray techniques can provide insights into the electronic structures of molecules-in particular, transition metal complexes-that are difficult if not impossible to obtain by other means.

We use picosecond time-resolved polarized X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements to probe the structure of the long-lived photoexcited state of methylcobalamin (MeCbl) and the cob(II)alamin photoproduct formed following photoexcitation of adenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl, coenzyme B12). For MeCbl, we used 520 nm excitation and a time delay of 100 ps to avoid the formation of cob(II)alamin. The laser-induced nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of rare gas atoms in the near and mid-IR laser fields is studied experimentally and theoretically. We investigate electron-electron correlation at high recollision energies, experimentally achieving ponderomotive energies (Up) above 80 eV. The contribution of the two dominant channels of NSDI in the photoelectron momentum distribution, impact, and excitation ionization, are both shown to scale with ponderomotive energy and are well reproduced by theory. Surprisingly, for a large Up in mid-IR fields, a noticeable electron-electron anticorrelation signal emerges at low photoelectron momenta, which cannot be explained by these mechanisms within state-of-the-art theoretical approaches.

Valence-to-core x-ray emission spectroscopy (VtC XES) combines the sample flexibility and element specificity of hard x-rays with the chemical environment sensitivity of valence spectroscopy. We extend this technique to study geometric and electronic structural changes induced by photoexcitation in the femtosecond time domain via laser-pump, x-ray probe experiments using an x-ray free electron laser. The results of time-resolved VtC XES on a series of ferrous complexes [Fe(CN)2n(2, 2′-bipyridine)3−n]−2n+2, n = 1, 2, 3, are presented. Comparisons of spectra obtained from ground state density functional theory calculations reveal signatures of excited state bond length and oxidation state changes. An oxidation state change associated with a metal-to-ligand charge transfer state with a lifetime of less than 100 fs is observed, as well as bond length changes associated with metal-centered excited states with lifetimes of 13 ps and 250 ps.

With the rising cost and insufficient supply of cobalt, the thrust for cobalt-free cathode materials with the high specific capacity to build Li-ion batteries has increased significantly. Using nickel as the prime electrochemical active species, we have synthesized a new-class of materials with the combination of ordered and disordered phases. To obtain high capacity and electrical charge neutrality, stoichiometry of cations designed in a way that it forms Li/Ni rich Ni-Ti-Mo oxide materials. In addition to conventional capacity from redox activity of transition metals, partially reversible oxygen redox reaction also contributes to electrochemical activity and thus results in unusual high capacity. The resultant cathode materials of LiNi0.5Ti0.5O2-(Li4MoO5)0.8 and LiNiO2 mixture phases reach the specific capacity of 240 mAh/g. Detailed soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron microscopy are used to reveal the crystal phases in this system and trace changes in the Ni2+/Ni4+ redox couple during charge-discharge processes. Such comprehensive analysis of ordered-disordered oxides suggesting potentiality to develop high-capacity cobalt-free cathodes.

International audience; The structural dynamics of charge-transfer states of nitrogen-ligated copper complexes has been extensively investigated in recent years following the development of pump-probe X-ray techniques. In this study we extend this approach towards copper complexes with sulfur coordination and investigate the influence of charge transfer states on the structure of a dicopper(I) complex with coordination by bridging disulfide ligands and additionally tetramethylguanidine units [CuI2(NSSN)(2)](2+). In order to directly observe and refine the photoinduced structural changes in the solvated complex we applied picosecond pump-probe X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Additionally, the ultrafast evolution of the electronic excited states was monitored by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in the UV-Vis probe range. DFT calculations were used to predict molecular geometries and electronic structures of the ground and metal-to-ligand charge transfer states with singlet and triplet spin multiplicities, i.e. S-0, (MLCT)-M-1 and (MLCT)-M-3, respectively. Combining these techniques we elucidate the electronic and structural dynamics of the solvated complex upon photoexcitation to the MLCT states. In particular, femtosecond optical transient spectroscopy reveals three distinct timescales of 650 fs, 10 ps and 4100 ps, which were assigned as internal conversion to the ground state (Sn -> S-0), intersystem crossing (MLCT)-M-1 -> (MLCT)-M-3, and subsequent relaxation of the triplet to the ground state, respectively. Experimental data collected using both X-ray techniques are in agreement with the DFT-predicted structure for the triplet state, where coordination bond lengths change and one of the S-S bridges is cleaved, causing the movement of two halves of the molecule relative to each other. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy resolves changes in Cu-ligand bond lengths with precision on the order of 0.01 angstrom, whereas WAXS is sensitive to changes in the global shape related to relative movement of parts of the molecule. The results presented herein widen the knowledge on the electronic and structural dynamics of photoexcited copper-sulfur complexes and demonstrate the potential of combining the pump-probe X-ray absorption and scattering for studies on photoinduced structural dynamics in copper-based coordination complexes.

We use hard X-rayemission spectroscopy (XES), which combines element specificity and high penetration with sensitivity to orbital structure, making it a powerful technique for molecular studies in a wide variety of environments. A picosecond-time-resolved measurement of the complete 1s X-ray emission spectrum captures the transient photoinduced changes and includes the weak valence-to-core (vtc) emission lines that correspond to transitions from occupied valence orbitals to the nascent core-hole. Vtc-XES offers particular insight into the molecular orbitals directly involved in the light-driven dynamics; a change in the metal− ligand orbital overlap results in an intensity reduction and a blue energy shift in agreement with our theoretical calculations and more subtle features at the highest energies reflect changes in the frontier orbital populations., Published by ACS, Washington, DC

We study the structural dynamics of photoexcited [Co(terpy)_{2}]^{2+} in an aqueous solution with ultrafast x-ray diffuse scattering experiments conducted at the Linac Coherent Light Source. Through direct comparisons with density functional theory calculations, our analysis shows that the photoexcitation event leads to elongation of the Co-N bonds, followed by coherent Co-N bond length oscillations arising from the impulsive excitation of a vibrational mode dominated by the symmetrical stretch of all six Co-N bonds. This mode has a period of 0.33 ps and decays on a subpicosecond time scale. We find that the equilibrium bond-elongated structure of the high spin state is established on a single-picosecond time scale and that this state has a lifetime of ∼7 ps.

The technical implementation of a multi-MHz data acquisition scheme for laser–X-ray pump–probe experiments with pulse limited temporal resolution (100 ps) is presented. Such techniques are very attractive to benefit from the high-repetition rates of X-ray pulses delivered from advanced synchrotron radiation sources. Exploiting a synchronized 3.9 MHz laser excitation source, experiments in 60-bunch mode (7.8 MHz) at beamline P01 of the PETRA III storage ring are performed. Hereby molecular systems in liquid solutions are excited by the pulsed laser source and the total X-ray fluorescence yield (TFY) from the sample is recorded using silicon avalanche photodiode detectors (APDs). The subsequent digitizer card samples the APD signal traces in 0.5 ns steps with 12-bit resolution. These traces are then processed to deliver an integrated value for each recorded single X-ray pulse intensity and sorted into bins according to whether the laser excited the sample or not. For each subgroup the recorded single-shot values are averaged over ∼107 pulses to deliver a mean TFY value with its standard error for each data point,e.g.at a given X-ray probe energy. The sensitivity reaches down to the shot-noise limit, and signal-to-noise ratios approaching 1000 are achievable in only a few seconds collection time per data point. The dynamic range covers 100 photons pulse−1and is only technically limited by the utilized APD.

We have performed femtosecond X-ray spectroscopy measurements after UV photoexcitation of a colloidal solution of ZnO nanoparticles. The results indicate sub-ps hole trapping at oxygen vacancies with shallowly-trapped electrons in the conduction band.

Ultrafast X-ray techniques serve as a direct probe of a long-lived pseudo-octahedral high-valent iron(V) complex. Its photo-induced formation from an azido-iron(III) precursor is observed in real-time with sub-picosecond resolution at SACLA XFEL.

We report about the development and implementation of a new setup for time-resolved X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy at beamline P11 utilizing the outstanding source properties of the low-emittance PETRA III synchrotron storage ring in Hamburg. Using a high intensitymicrometer-sized X-ray beam in combination with two positional feedback systems, measurements were performed on the transition metal complex fac-Tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III) alsoreferred to as fac-Ir(ppy)$_3$. This compound is a representative of the phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes, which play an important role in organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology. The experiment could directly prove the anticipated photoinduced charge transfer reaction. Our results further reveal that the temporal resolution of the experiment is limited by the PETRA III X-ray bunch length of ∼ 103 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM).

Theoretical predictions show that depending on the populations of the Fe 3dxy, 3dxz, and 3dyz orbitals two possible quintet states can exist for the high-spin state of the photoswitchable model system [Fe(terpy)2]2+. The differences in the structure and molecular properties of these 5B2 and 5E quintets are very small and pose a substantial challenge for experiments to resolve them. Yet for a better understanding of the physics of this system, which can lead to the design of novel molecules with enhanced photoswitching performance, it is vital to determine which high-spin state is reached in the transitions that follow the light excitation. The quintet state can be prepared with a short laser pulse and can be studied with cutting-edge time-resolved X-ray techniques. Here we report on the application of an extended set of X-ray spectroscopy and scattering techniques applied to investigate the quintet state of [Fe(terpy)2]2+ 80 ps after light excitation. High-quality X-ray absorption, nonresonant emission, and resonant emission spectra as well as X-ray diffuse scattering data clearly reflect the formation of the high-spin state of the [Fe(terpy)2]2+ molecule; moreover, extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy resolves the Fe–ligand bond-length variations with unprecedented bond-length accuracy in time-resolved experiments. With ab initio calculations we determine why, in contrast to most related systems, one configurational mode is insufficient for the description of the low-spin (LS)–high-spin (HS) transition. We identify the electronic structure origin of the differences between the two possible quintet modes, and finally, we unambiguously identify the formed quintet state as 5E, in agreement with our theoretical expectations.

This article reports the results of 2 studies conducted to examine the ability of the Situational Outlook Questionnaire(tm) (SOQ) to effectively discern climates that either encourage or discourage creativity and the ability to initiate change. The purpose of the studies is to examine the concurrent criterion-related validity of the SOQ. The climate for creativity and change is defined, and the context for the use of the measure in organizational settings is established through the development of a model for organizational change. The article presents the history of the SOQ's development and gives a description of the SOQ. The methodology and results of both studies, including 3 groups, are reported. The results of both studies show that when individuals complete the SOQ based on their recollection of a best- and worst-case work experience, the measure is able to consistently and significantly discriminate between the 2 types of experiences. Strong-field ionisation surprises with richness beyond current understanding despite decade long investigations. Ionisation with mid-IR light has promptly revealed unexpected kinetic energy structures that seem related to unanticipated quantum trajectories of the electrons. We measure first 3D momentum distributions in the deep tunneling regime (γ = 0.3) and observe surprising new electron dynamics of near-zero momentum electrons and extremely low momentum structures, below the eV, despite very high quiver energies of 95 eV. Such level of high-precision measurements at only 1 meV above the threshold, despite 5 orders higher ponderomotive energies, has now become possible with a specifically developed ultrafast mid-IR light source in combination with a reaction microscope, thereby permitting a new level of investigations into mid-IR recollision physics.

We present a novel nuclear activation-based method for the investigation of high-energy photons and electron dynamics within the laser-plasma interaction zone. This method is based on high density activation targets which are a pseudoalloy of several selected isotopes with different photo-neutron disintegration reaction thresholds. The gamma decay spectrum emitted by the activated target is used for the reconstruction of the bremsstrahlung spectrum generated by the electrons. This allows for the reconstruction of the spectrum of bremsstrahlung photons without any anticipated fit procedures. Furthermore, the characterization of the electrons in the interaction zone is accessible immediately. The consolidated findings about the interaction mechanisms could be used to realize, control and characterize laser driven particle generation, such as a pulsed neutron source for nuclear and material sciences using special target designs and materials in a pseudoalloic compound of isotopes. An additional application is the laser assisted nuclear transmutation to produce short-lived isotopes with activities suitable for medical diagnostics and therapy.

Ultrafast structural dynamics is an emerging field aiming to deliver a detailed understanding of the elementary steps in reacting chemical species, which involve changes in their nuclear, electronic and spin states. Such processes are vital ingredients in chemistry and biology, but also in technological applications, including efficient charge transport in solar energy converters and ultrafast switchable molecular magnets. In order to unravel the complex dynamic behavior in photoexcited molecules we have implemented a suite of ultrafast x-ray spectroscopic and scattering tools to zoom into both the electronic and nuclear structures, with the goal to ultimately deliver a molecular movie of ongoing chemical processes. In view of the many potential applications in chemical and biological dynamics it is desirable to increase the signal-to-noise (S/N) level of such experiments as well as to decrease the time resolution into the femtosecond time domain. We present our benchmark results using a versatile setup that permits simultaneous measurements of ultrafast x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies combined with x-ray diffuse scattering. This combined scattering and spectroscopic approach has recently been established by us at different synchrotron [1-2] and XFEL [3] lightsources. We applied it to study different photochemical systems in liquid media, ranging from nascent radicals in solution to photocatalytic systems, with the goal to deliver a deeper understanding of the elementary steps in chemical reactivity.

In recent years, the development of high power laser systems led to focussed intensities of more than 1022 W/cm2 at high pulse energies. Furthermore, both, the advanced high power lasers and the development of sophisticated laser particle acceleration mechanisms facilitate the generation of high energetic particle beams at high fluxes. The challenge of imaging detector systems is to acquire the properties of the high flux beam spatially and spectrally resolved. The limitations of most detector systems are saturation effects. These conventional detectors are based on scintillators, semiconductors, or radiation sensitive films.We present a nuclear activation-based imaging spectroscopy method, which is called NAIS, for the characterization of laser accelerated proton beams. The offline detector system is a combination of stacked metal foils and imaging plates (IP). After the irradiation of the stacked foils they become activated by nuclear reactions, emitting gamma decay radiation. In the next step, an autoradiography of the activated foils using IPs and an analysis routine lead to a spectrally and spatially resolved beam profile. In addition, we present an absolute calibration method for IPs.

International audience; Direct visualization of ultrafast coupling between charge carriers and lattice degrees of freedom in photoexcited semiconductors has remained a long-standing challenge and is critical for understanding the light-induced physical behaviour of materials under extreme non-equilibrium conditions. Here we obtain a direct visualization of the structural dynamics in monocrystalline 2D perovskites. We achieve this by monitoring the evolution of wavevector-resolved ultrafast electron diffraction intensity following above-bandgap high-density photoexcitation. Our analysis reveals a light-induced ultrafast reduction in antiferro-distortion resulting from a strong interaction between the electron–hole plasma and perovskite lattice, which induces an in-plane octahedra rotation towards a more symmetric phase. Correlated ultrafast spectroscopy performed at the same carrier density as ultrafast electron diffraction reveals that the creation of a dense electron–hole plasma triggers the relaxation of lattice distortion at shorter timescales by modulating the crystal cohesive energy. Finally, we show that the interaction between carrier gas and lattice can be altered by tailoring the rigidity of the 2D perovskite by choosing an appropriate organic spacer layer.

The advent of mid-IR laser sources (λ ≥ 3.0 μm) permits scrutinizing strong-field photoionization of atoms and molecules deep into the tunnelling regime and unexpected features are being revealed [1]. A low kinetic energy structure (LES) was observed in the experimental photoelectron energy distribution and it was conspicuously absent in semi-classical and Keldysh-Faisal-Reiss (KFR) calculations. Further measurements are required revealing a full 3D momentum picture of the before-mentioned effects.

We present kinematically complete high resolution photoionization measurements in the deep tunneling regime (γ = 0.3) by ultra-short, low-frequency fields (3.1 μm) and unravel momentum contributions of LES, VLES and find a new zero energy structure (ZES).

Nanostructures of transition metal oxides, such as zinc oxide, have attracted considerable interest for solar-energy conversion and photocatalysis. Both applications are sensitive to the transport and trapping of photoexcited charge carriers. The probing of electron trapping has recently become possible using time-resolved element-sensitive methods, such as X-ray spectroscopy. However, valence-band-trapped holes have so far escaped observation. Herein we use X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with a dispersive X-ray emission spectrometer to probe the charge carrier relaxation and trapping processes in zinc oxide nanoparticles after above band-gap photoexcitation. Our results, supported by simulations, demonstrate that within 80 ps, photoexcited holes are trapped at singly charged oxygen vacancies, which causes an outward displacement by ~15% of the four surrounding zinc atoms away from the doubly charged vacancy. This identification of the hole traps provides insight for future developments of transition metal oxide-based nanodevices., Metal-oxide nanostructures are used in a range of light-driven applications, yet the fundamentals behind their properties are poorly understood. Here the authors probe photoexcited zinc oxide nanoparticles using time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy, identifying photocatalytically-active hole traps as oxygen vacancies in the lattice.
