Dendrochronology is an essential tool to determine the date and provenance of wood from historical art objects. As standard methods to access the tree rings are invasive, X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been proposed for non-invasive dendrochronological investigation. While traditional CT can provide clear images of the inner structure of wooden objects, it requires their full rotation, imposing strong limitations on the size of the object. These limitations have previously encouraged investigations into alternative acquisition trajectories, including trajectories with only linear movement. In this paper, we use such a line-trajectory (LT) X-ray tomography technique to retrieve tree-ring patterns from large wooden objects. We demonstrate that by moving a wooden artifact sideways between the static X-ray source and the detector during acquisition, sharp reconstruction images of the tree rings can be produced. We validate this technique using computer simulations and two wooden test planks, and demonstrate it on a large iconic chest from the Rijksmuseum collection (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). The LT scanning method can be easily implemented in standard X-ray imaging units available at museum research facilities. Therefore, this scanning technique represents a major step towards the standard implementation of non-invasive dendrochronology on large wooden cultural heritage objects.

Studying the wood of art objects such as sculptures, panel paintings and furniture can be crucial to elucidate their chronology and production centre. Here we present an approach that considers the prove- nance of the wood and its potential availability in different areas as a means to identify the provenance of wooden art objects. We illustrate this approach with an interdisciplinary study aimed to determine the date and provenance of the Woman with lantern , a carved altar fragment from the Rijksmuseum’s collections (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). The origin of this object is undocumented, but based on stylistic and iconographic features its provenance was proposed to be the altarpiece of Rennes cathedral (France), carved in Antwerp (Belgium) around 1520 C.E.. However, doubts arose when curators tested the potential fit of the sculpture in that altarpiece and could not find a neat match. Dating and provenancing the wood of the sculpture by standard dendrochronological means failed to produce a date, and comparison of the tree-ring pattern from the sculpture with those of the sculptures from Rennes altarpiece delivered no results either, supporting the suspicion that the Woman with lantern belonged elsewhere. In 2019, X-ray computed tomography (CT) provided digital cross-sections throughout the sculpture and a longer tree-ring series was obtained. This time, the outermost ring was dated to the year 1487 C.E.. The tree was estimated to have been cut after 1495 C.E., indicating a likely production in the first quarter of the 16th century. The origin of the timber in the eastern Netherlands/northwest Germany, combined with empirical evidence about timber availability in various regions of the Low Countries at that time, suggests that the sculpture was made in a workshop located north of the Rhine in the (current) Netherlands, rather than Antwerp. This research has led to the hypothesis that workshops north and south of the Rhine river branches in the Low Countries were supplied by forests located in different areas. If proven correct, establishing the wood provenance will assist in determining the origin of Netherlandish works of art from the late-Gothic and Northern Renaissance periods.

This article will examine the digitalization of education, its effectiveness, pros and cons. In addition, digital technologies will be able to affect the performance and motivation of students. Possible educational potential of digital technologies in teaching of foreign languages, recommendations on methods for integrating digital technologies into the educational process for work and independent work organizing of students and pupils are some of their advantages. Digital education offers new learning opportunities as student engagement in an interactive digital environment and educators use hybrid personalized learning courses, innovative, engaging learnng strategies. Looking at student success in the modern conditions they are required to be not only thoughtful digital content users, but also effective digital media creators are able to collaborate their skills and share ideas through dynamic storytelling, data visualization. The article describes the works by both Russian and foreign authors devoted to the advantages and some risks arising in society as a result of the digitalization in education. Advantages and disadvantages of digital education are clearly have been shown in the article. As the latest and most advanced technology is very expensive, at presents digitalization has both defenders and opponents of this phenomenon. It remembers about tremendous expenses on the newest digital tools and software. The final idea of this article is to create a flexible learning environment that encourages innovation.

The photon spectrum emitted by a transrelativistic pair plasma is calculated in the presence of an ultrastrong magnetic field, and is shown to bear a remarkable resemblance to the rising hard X-ray spectra of quiescent magnetars. This emission is powered by pair annihilation which, in contrast with a weakly magnetized pair plasma, shows an extended low-frequency tail similar to bremsstrahlung. Cross sections for electron-positron annihilation/scattering, two-photon pair creation, and photon-$e^\pm$ scattering are adopted from our earlier ab initio QED calculations in the regime $10��_{\rm em}^{-1}B_{\rm Q} \gg B \gg B_{\rm Q}$. Careful attention is given to the $u$-channel scattering resonance. Magnetospheric arcades anchored in zones of intense crustal shear and extending to about twice the magnetar radius are identified as the sites of the persistent hard X-ray emission. We deduce a novel and stable configuration for the magnetospheric circuit, with a high plasma density sustained by ohmic heating and in situ pair creation. Pairs are sourced non-locally by photon collisions in zones with weak currents, such as the polar cap. Annihilation bremsstrahlung extends to the optical-IR band, where the plasma cutoff is located. The upper magnetar atmosphere experiences strong current-driven growth of ion-acoustic turbulence, which may limit positron diffusion. Coherent optical-IR emission is bounded near the observed flux by induced scattering. This model accommodates the rapid X-ray brightening of an activating magnetar, concentrated thermal hotspots, and the subdominant thermal X-ray emission of some active magnetars. We evaluate several basic electrodynamic processes as modified by the presence of a very strong magnetic field, exceeding $B_{\rm Q} \equiv m^2/e = 4.4\times 10^{13}$ G. These results are needed to build models of dissipative phenomena outside magnetars and some other neutron stars. Differential and total cross sections and rates are presented for electron-photon scattering, the annihilation of an electron-positron pair into two photons, the inverse process of two-photon pair creation, and single-photon pair creation into the lowest Landau state. The relative importance of these interactions changes as the background magnetic field grows in strength. The particle phase space relevant for a given process may be restricted by single-photon pair creation, which also opens up efficient channels for pair multiplication, e.g. in combination with scattering. Our results are presented in the form of compact formulae that allow for relativistic electron (positron) motion, in the regime where Landau excitations can be neglected (corresponding to $10^3B_{\rm Q} \gg B \gg B_{\rm Q}$ for moderately relativistic motion along the magnetic field). Where a direct comparison is possible, our results are tested against earlier calculations, and a brief astrophysical context is provided. This paper continues the approach of Kostenko \& Thompson to calculating quantum electrodynamic processes in the ultrastrong magnetic field near some neutron stars, such as magnetars or merging binary neutron stars. Here we consider electron-positron scattering, the Coulomb scattering of electrons and positrons off ions, and relativistic $e^\pm$-ion bremsstrahlung. The evaluation of differential and total cross sections simplifies considerably when the magnetic field lies in the range $10^3B_{\rm Q} \gg B \gg B_{\rm Q}$, where $B_{\rm Q} \equiv m^2/e = 4.4\times 10^{13}$ G. Then, relativistic motion of $e^\pm$ is possible even when restricted to the lowest Landau state. Accurate results for differential and total cross sections are obtained by truncating the sum over intermediate-state Landau levels and otherwise disregarding terms inversely proportional to the magnetic field, which are complicated enough to have inhibited previous attempts to calculate magnetic electron-positron scattering and relativistic bremsstrahlung. We propose a combination of an experimental approach and a reconstruction technique that leads to reduction of artefacts in X-ray computer tomography of strongly attenuating objects. Through fully automatic data alignment, data generated in multiple experiments with varying object orientations are combined. Simulations and experiments show that the solutions computed using algebraic methods based on multiple acquisitions can achieve a dramatic improvement in the reconstruction quality, even when each acquisition generates a reduced number of projections. The approach does not require any advanced setup components making it ideal for laboratory-based X-ray tomography.

Computer Tomography (CT) scanners for research applications are often designed to facilitate flexible acquisition geometries. Making full use of such CT scanners requires advanced reconstruction software that can (i) deal with a broad range of geometrical scanning settings, (ii) allows for customization of processing algorithms, and (iii) has the capability to process large amounts of data. FleXbox is a Python-based tomographic reconstruction toolbox focused on these three functionalities. It is built to bridge the gap between low-level tomographic reconstruction packages (e.g. ASTRA toolbox) and high-level distributed systems (e.g. Livermore Tomography Tools). FleXbox allows to model arbitrary source, detector and object trajectories. The modular architecture of FleXbox allows to design an optimal reconstruction approach for a single CT dataset. When multiple datasets of an object are acquired (either different spatial regions or different snapshots in time), they can be combined into a larger high resolution volume or a time series of volumes. The software allows to then create a computational reconstruction pipeline that can run without user interaction and enables efficient computation on large-scale 3D volumes on a single workstation.

Purpose: The implementation of in-line x-ray phase contrast imaging (PCI) for soft-tissue patient imaging is hampered by the lack of a bright and spatially coherent x-ray source that fits into the hospital environment. This article provides a quantitative characterization of the phase-contrast enhancement of a PCI system based on the miniature synchrotron technology MIRRORCLE-6X. Methods: The phase-contrast effect was measured using an edge response of a plexiglass plate as a function of the incident angle of radiation. We have developed a comprehensive x-ray propagation model based on the system's components, properties, and geometry in order to interpret the measurement data. Monte-Carlo simulations are used to estimate the system's spectral properties and resolution. Results: The measured ratio of the detected phase-contrast to the absorption contrast is currently in the range 100% to 200%. Experiments show that with the current implementation of the MIRRORCLE-6X, a target smaller than 30-40 {mu}m does not lead to a larger phase-contrast. The reason for this is that the fraction of x-rays produced by the material (carbon filament and glue) that is used for mounting the target in the electron beam is more than 25% of the total amount of x-rays produced. This increases the apparent sourcemore » size. The measured phase-contrast is at maximum two times larger than the absorption contrast with the current set-up. Conclusions: Calculations based on our model of the present imaging system predict that the phase-contrast can be up to an order of magnitude larger than the absorption contrast in case the materials used for mounting the target in the electron beam do not (or hardly) produce x-rays. The methods described in this paper provide vital feedback for guiding future modifications to the design of the x-ray target of MIRRORCLE-type system and configuration of the in-line PCI systems in general.« less

In this review we consider in detail different theoretical topics associated with interaction in the dark sector. We study linear and nonlinear interactions which depend on the dark matter and dark energy densities. We consider a number of different models (including the holographic dark energy and dark energy in a fractal universe) with interacting dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM), have done a thorough analysis of these models. The main task of this review was not only to give an idea about the modern set of different models of dark energy, but to show how much can be diverse dynamics of the universe in these models. We find that the dynamics of a Universe that contains interaction in the dark sector can differ significantly from the Standard Cosmological Model (SCM)., Comment: 132 pages, 32 figures. International audience; State-of-the-art techniques for phase retrieval in propagation based X-ray phase-contrast imaging are aiming to solve an underdetermined linear system of equations. They commonly employ Tikhonov regularization - an L2-norm regularized deconvolution scheme - despite some of its limitations. We present a novel approach to phase retrieval based on Total Variation (TV) minimization. We incorporated TV minimization for deconvolution in phase retrieval using a variety of the most common linear phase-contrast models. The results of our TV minimization was compared with Tikhonov regularized deconvolution on simulated as well as experimental data. The presented method was shown to deliver improved accuracy in reconstructions based on a single distance as well as multiple distance phase-contrast images corrupted by noise and hampered by errors due to nonlinear imaging effects. International audience; The reconstruction problem in in-line X-ray Phase-Contrast Tomography is usually approached by solving two independent linearized sub-problems: phase retrieval and tomographic reconstruction. Both problems are often ill-posed and require the use of regularization techniques that lead to artifacts in the reconstructed image. We present a novel reconstruction approach that solves two coupled linear problems algebraically. Our approach is based on the assumption that the frequency space of the tomogram can be divided into bands that are accurately recovered and bands that are undefined by the observations. This results in an underdetermined linear system of equations. We investigate how this system can be solved using three different algebraic reconstruction algorithms based on Total Variation minimization. These algorithms are compared using both simulated and experimental data. Our results demonstrate that in many cases the proposed algebraic algorithms yield a significantly improved accuracy over the conventional L2-regularized closed-form solution. This work demonstrates that algebraic algorithms may become an important tool in applications where the acquisition time and the delivered radiation dose must be minimized. This work presents the development of a non-destructive imaging technique for the investigation of the microstructure of cementite grains embedded in a ferrite matrix of medium-carbon steel. The measurements were carried out at the material science beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) ID11. It was shown that in-line X-ray phase-contrast tomography (PCT) can be used for the detection of cementite grains of several microns in size. X-ray PCT of the cementite structure can be achieved by either a ‘single distance’ or a ‘multiple distance’ acquisition protocol. The latter permits quantitative phase retrieval. A second imaging technique, X-ray diffraction-contrast tomography (DCT), was employed to obtain information about the shapes and crystallographic orientations of the distinct ferrite grains surrounding the cementite structures. The initial results demonstrate the feasibility of determining the geometry of the cementite grains after the austenite-ferrite phase-transformation in a non-destructive manner. The results obtained with PCT and DCT are verified with ex-situ optical microscopy studies of the same specimen.
