International audience; This study assesses marine community production based on the diel variability of bio-optical properties monitored by two BioGeoChemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) floats. Experiments were conducted in two distinct Mediterranean systems, the northwestern Ligurian Sea and the central Ionian Sea, during summer months. We derived particulate organic carbon (POC) stock and gross community production integrated within the surface, euphotic and subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layers, using an existing approach applied to diel cycle measurements of the particulate beam attenuation (cp) and backscattering (bbp) coefficients. The diel cycle of cp provided a robust proxy for quantifying biological production in both systems; that of bbp was comparatively less robust. Derived primary production estimates vary by a factor of 2 depending upon the choice of the bio-optical relationship that converts the measured optical coefficient to POC, which is thus a critical step to constrain. Our results indicate a substantial contribution to the water column production of the SCM layer (16 %-42 %), which varies largely with the considered system. In the Ligurian Sea, the SCM is a seasonal feature that behaves as a subsurface biomass maximum (SBM) with the ability to respond to episodic abiotic forcing by increasing production. In contrast, in the Ionian Sea, the SCM is permanent, primarily induced by phytoplankton photoacclimation, and contributes moderately to water column production. These results clearly demonstrate the strong potential for transmissometers deployed on BGC-Argo profiling floats to quantify non-intrusively in situ biological production of organic carbon in the water column of stratified oligotrophic systems with recurring or permanent SCMs, which are widespread features in the global ocean.

Recent observations have shown that phytoplankton biomass increases in the North Atlantic during winter, even when the mixed layer is deepening and light is limited. Current theories suggest that this is due to a release from grazing pressure. Here we demonstrate that the often-used grazing models that are linear at low phytoplankton concentration do not allow for a wintertime increase in phytoplankton biomass. However, mathematical formulations of grazing as a function of phytoplankton concentration that are quadratic at low concentrations (or more generally decrease faster than linearly as phytoplankton concentration decreases) can reproduce the fall to spring transition in phytoplankton, including wintertime biomass accumulation. We illustrate this point with a minimal model for the annual cycle of North Atlantic phytoplankton designed to simulate phytoplankton concentration as observed by BioGeoChemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) floats in the North Atlantic. This analysis provides a mathematical framework for assessing hypotheses of phytoplankton bloom formation.

Analysis of global numerical experiments with physical and BGC forecasting model to estimate the impact of new observing system design.

The Rhodes Gyre is a cyclonic persistent feature of the general circulation of the Levantine Basin in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Although it is located in the most oligotrophic basin of the Mediterranean Sea, it is a relatively high primary production area due to strong winter nutrient supply associated with the formation of Levantine Intermediate Water. In this study, a 3D coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model (SYMPHONIE/Eco3M-S) was used to characterize the seasonal and interannual variability of the Rhodes Gyre’s ecosystem and to estimate an annual organic carbon budget over the 2013–2020 period. Comparisons of model outputs with satellite data and compiled in situ data from cruises and BioGeoChemical-Argo floats revealed the ability of the model to reconstruct the main seasonal and spatial biogeochemical dynamics of the Levantine Basin. The model results indicated that during the winter mixing period, phytoplankton first progressively grow sustained by nutrient supply. Then, short episodes of convection driven by heat loss and wind events, favoring nutrient injections, organic carbon export, and inducing light limitation on primary production, alternate with short episodes of phytoplankton growth. The estimate of the annual organic carbon budget indicated that the Rhodes Gyre is an autotrophic area with a positive net community production in the upper layer (0–150 m) amounting to 31.2 ± 6.9 g C m-2 year-1. Net community production in the upper layer is almost balanced over the seven-year period by physical transfers, (1) via downward export (16.8 ± 6.2 g C m-2 year-1) and (2) through lateral transport towards the surrounding regions (14.1 ± 2.1 g C m-2 year-1). The intermediate layer (150–400 m) also appears to be a source of organic carbon for the surrounding Levantine Sea (7.5 ± 2.8 g C m-2 year-1) mostly through the subduction of Levantine Intermediate Water following winter mixing. The Rhodes Gyre shows high interannual variability with enhanced primary production, net community production, and exports during years marked by intense heat losses and deep mixed layers. However, annual primary production appears to be only partially driven by winter vertical mixing. Based on our results, we can speculate that future increase of temperature and stratification could strongly impact the carbon fluxes in this region.

Design of numerical experiments assimilating in situ physical and BGC observations to assess and enhance their impact in CMEMS ocean monitoring and forecasting systems.

As part of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS), a physical–biogeochemical coupled model system has been developed to monitor and forecast the ocean dynamics and marine ecosystem of the European waters and more specifically on the Iberia–Biscay–Ireland (IBI) area. The CMEMS IBI coupled model covers the north-east Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Iceland, including the North Sea and the western Mediterranean, with a NEMO-PISCES 1∕36∘ model application. The coupled system has been providing 7 d weekly ocean forecasts for CMEMS since April 2018. Prior to its operational launch, a pre-operational qualification simulation (2010–2016) has allowed assessing the model's capacity to reproduce the main biogeochemical and ecosystem features of the IBI area. The objective of this paper is then to describe the consistency and skill assessment of the PISCES biogeochemical model using this 7-year qualification simulation. The model results are compared with available satellite estimates as well as in situ observations (ICES, EMODnet and BGC-Argo). The simulation successfully reproduces the spatial distribution and seasonal cycles of oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll a and net primary production, and confirms that PISCES is suitable at such a resolution and can be used for operational analysis and forecast applications. This model system can be a useful tool to better understand the current state and changes in the marine biogeochemistry of European waters and can also provide key variables for developing indicators to monitor the health of marine ecosystems. These indicators may be of interest to scientists, policy makers, environmental agencies and the general public.

As commonly observed in oligotrophic stratified waters, a subsurface (or deep) chlorophyll maximum (SCM) frequently characterizes the vertical distribution of phytoplankton chlorophyll in the Mediterranean Sea. Occurring far from the surface layer “seen” by ocean colour satellites, SCMs are difficult to observe with adequate spatio-temporal resolution and their biogeochemical impact remains unknown. Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) profiling floats represent appropriate tools for studying the dynamics of SCMs. Based on data collected from 36 BGC-Argo floats deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, our study aims to address two main questions. (1) What are the different types of SCMs in the Mediterranean Sea? (2) Which environmental factors control their occurrence and dynamics? First, we analysed the seasonal and regional variations in the chlorophyll concentration (Chl a), particulate backscattering coefficient (bbp), a proxy of the particulate organic carbon (POC) and environmental parameters (photosynthetically active radiation and nitrates) within the SCM layer over the Mediterranean Basin. The vertical profiles of Chl a and bbp were then statistically classified and the seasonal occurrence of each of the different types of SCMs quantified. Finally, a case study was performed on two contrasted regions and the environmental conditions at depth were further investigated to understand the main controls on the SCMs. In the eastern basin, SCMs result, at a first order, from a photoacclimation process. Conversely, SCMs in the western basin reflect a biomass increase at depth benefiting from both light and nitrate resources. Our results also suggest that a variety of intermediate types of SCMs are encountered between these two endmember situations.

International audience; The emerging availability of Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) float data creates new opportunities to combine models and observations in investigations of the interior structures and dynamics of marine ecosystems. An existing variational data assimilation scheme (3DVarBio) has been upgraded and coupled with the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service biogeochemical model of the Mediterranean Sea to assimilate BGC-Argo chlorophyll profile observations. Our results show that the assimilation of BGC-Argo float data is feasible. Moreover, the proposed data assimilation framework provides significant corrections to the chlorophyll concentrations and is able to consistently readjust the shapes of chlorophyll profiles during surface blooms occurring in winter vertically mixed conditions, and in the case of the summer deep chlorophyll maxima. Sensitivity analysis and diagnostic metrics have been applied to evaluate the impact of assimilation and the relevance of different factors of the 3DVarBio method. A key factor is the observation error that has been tuned on a monthly basis to incorporate the representation error. Different frequencies of the assimilation cycle have been tested: daily or 3-day assimilation fosters the highest skill performances despite the reduced impacts and the increase of computational burden. Considering the present size of the BGC-Argo Mediterranean network (about 15 floats) and the estimated non-homogeneous correlation radius length scale (15.2 km on average), the chlorophyll assimilation can constrain the phytoplankton dynamics along the whole water column over an area up to 10% of the Mediterranean Sea.

International audience; Stratified oceanic systems are characterized by the presence of a so-called Deep Chlorophyll a Maximum (DCM) not detectable by ocean color satellites. A DCM can either be a phytoplankton (carbon) biomass maximum (Deep Biomass Maximum, DBM), or the consequence of photoacclimation processes (Deep photoAcclimation Maximum, DAM) resulting in the increase of chlorophyll a per phytoplankton carbon. Even though these DCM (further qualified as either DBMs or DAMs) have long been studied, no global-scale assessment has yet been undertaken and large knowledge gaps still remain in relation to the environmental drivers responsible for their formation and maintenance. In order to investigate their spatial and temporal variability in the open ocean, we use a global data set acquired by more than 500 Biogeochemical-Argo floats given that DCMs can be detected from the comparative vertical distribution of chlorophyll a concentrations and particulate backscattering coefficients. Our findings show that the seasonal dynamics of the DCMs are clearly region-dependent. High-latitude environments are characterized by a low occurrence of intense DBMs, restricted to summer. Meanwhile, oligotrophic regions host permanent DAMs, occasionally replaced by DBMs in summer, while subequatorial waters are characterized by permanent DBMs benefiting from favorable conditions in terms of both light and nutrients. Overall, the appearance and depth of DCMs are primarily driven by light attenuation in the upper layer. Our present assessment of DCM occurrence and of environmental conditions prevailing in their development lay the basis for a better understanding and quantification of their role in carbon budgets (primary production and export).

The Mediterranean Sea has been identified as a hotspot for climate change. Furthermore, its very diverse trophic regimes, in such a little area, make it an extremely interesting region from a biogeochemical perspective. Numerous studies aim at better understanding and representing the Mediterrenean dynamics and biogeochemistry through modeling. This is a crucial step in order to predict the future anthropogenic impacts on the Mediterranean Sea and their possible effects on its biogeochemistry, and all what depends on it. The number of models that simulate the Mediterranean biogeochemistry, and the data available to compare with are now sufficient to draw an overall picture of the Mediterranean Sea biogeochemical models state of the art.In this study, we gathered 10 biogeochemical simulations of the Mediterranean Sea, including 8 regional and 2 high-resolution global configurations. The simulations are compared with surface chlorophyll estimates derived from satellite observations; chlorophyll, nitrate, oxygen, and particulate organic carbon concentrations derived from BGC-Argo floats, and phytoplankton group-specific primary production estimated from ocean color satellite observations. Our first aim is to describe and compare all known Mediterranean biogeochemical models, and to highlight their specificity. This should give an insight into the current achievements, and expose what biogeochemical model products are hence available for further ecological analysis. Furthermore, a specific attention is given to how well each model performs in selected regions of the Mediterranean Sea, in order to understand which specific process is needed to adequately represent the different trophic regimes of the Mediterranean Sea.

Numerical models of ocean biogeochemistry are becoming a major tool to detect and predict the impact of climate change on marine resources and ocean health. Classically, validation of such models relies on comparison with surface quantities from satellite (such as chlorophyll-a concentrations), climatologies, or sparse in situ data (such as cruises observations, and permanent fixed oceanic stations). However, these datasets are not fully suitable to assess how models represent many climate-relevant biogeochemical processes. These limitations now begin to be overcome with the availability of a large number of vertical profiles of light, pH, oxygen, nitrate, chlorophyll-a concentrations and particulate backscattering acquired by the Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) floats network. Additionally, other key biogeochemical variables such as dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity, not measured by floats, can be predicted by machine learning-based methods applied to float oxygen concentrations. Here, we demonstrate the use of the global array of BGC-Argo floats for the validation of biogeochemical models at the global scale. We first present 18 key metrics of ocean health and biogeochemical functioning to quantify the success of BGC model simulations. These metrics are associated with the air-sea CO2 flux, the biological carbon pump, oceanic pH, oxygen levels and Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZs). The metrics are either a depth-averaged quantity or correspond to the depth of a particular feature. We also suggest four diagnostic plots for displaying such metrics.

Although influenza vaccination of hospital healthcare workers (HCWs) has been associated with a reduction in patient mortality and morbidity, HCW vaccine coverage is low in France. Previous studies identified the role of perceptions of vaccine efficacy and safety as well as practical issues (e.g., limited time). We aimed to determine whether HCW behavior toward influenza vaccine was associated with occupation-related psycho-social issues and perceptions of management. Between February and August 2018, an anonymous online questionnaire explored the perceptions and behavior of nurses and nurse aides regarding the influenza vaccine, as well as the perceived quality of professional management, perceived psychological contract breach, perceived workload, and compassion fatigue using previously validated scales. Among the 791 respondents (mean age 36.9 ± 10 years, female 85.0%; nurses 76.4%), 28.6% had been vaccinated during the current year (i.e., the study year) and 13.0% during the previous year. Among those not vaccinated during the study year, their vaccination intention for the coming year on a 1–5 scale was 1/5 for 68.5% and 5/5 for 15.4%. Positive behavior/intention regarding the influenza vaccine (recent vaccination and/or high future intention) was positively correlated with perceptions of management and negatively correlated with feelings of a psychological contract breach and compassion fatigue. In multivariate analysis, this positive behavior/intention was correlated with management perception independently of the perceptions of vaccination itself. Among nurses and nurse aides, the propensity to be vaccinated appears to depend closely on the perceived working conditions. These factors should be addressed when promoting vaccination among these populations.

The South Pacific Subtropical Gyre (SPSG) is a vast and remote oceanic system where the variability in phytoplankton biomass and production is still largely uncertain due to the lack of in situ biogeochemical observations. The SPSG is an oligotrophic environment where the ecosystem is controlled predominantly by nutrient depletion in surface waters. However, this dynamic is altered in the vicinity of islands where increased biological activity occurs (i.e. the island mass effect, IME). This study mainly focuses on in situ observations which show evidence of an IME leeward of Tahiti (17.7 degrees S - 149.5 degrees W), French Polynesia. Physical and biogeochemical observations collected with two Biogeochemical-Argo profiling floats are used to investigate the dynamics of phytoplankton biomass. Data from the first float, drifting from April 2015 to November 2016 over > 1000 km westward of Tahiti, describe the open ocean conditions. The second float, deployed leeward of Tahiti in October 2015, stayed within 45 Ian off Tahiti for three months before it stopped communicating. In the oligotrophic central SPSG, our observations show that the deepening of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) from winter to summer is light-driven and that the wintertime increase in chlorophyll a concentration in the upper layer is likely to be due to the process of photoacclimation, consistent with previous observations in oligotrophic environments. In contrast, leeward of Tahiti, the DCM widens toward the surface during late spring in association with a biological enhancement in the upper layer. Using Biogeochemical-Argo data, meteorological data from Tahiti, Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model outputs and satellite-derived products (i.e., horizontal currents and associated fronts), the physical mechanisms involved in producing this biological enhancement leeward of Tahiti have been investigated. The IME occurs during a period of strong precipitation and in a zone of weak currents downstream of the island. We conjecture that the land drainage induces a significant supply of nitrate in the ocean upper layer (down to similar to 100 m) while a zone of weak currents in the southwestern zone behind Tahiti allows an accumulation zone to form, hence increasing phytoplankton growth up to 20 km away from the coastlines. A bio-optical-based community index suggests that the composition of the phytoplankton community differs leeward of Tahiti from that in the open ocean area, with more microphytoplankton within the IME, which is associated with an increase in the carbon export to the deeper ocean.

The model results are compared with available satellite estimates as well as in situ observations, with a focus on BGC-Argo floats. The evaluation confirms that this model system can be a useful tool to better understand the current state and changes in the marine biogeochemistry of European waters and can also provide key variables for developing indicators to monitor the health of marine ecosystems.

The operational production of data-assimilated biogeochemical state of the ocean is one of the challenging core projects of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (hereafter CMEMS). In that framework, Mercator Ocean International is in charge of improving the realism of its global 1⁄4° coupled physical-biogeochemical simulations, analyses and re‐analyses, and to develop an effective capacity to routinely estimate the biogeochemical state of the ocean, including, amongst others, the implementation of biogeochemical data assimilation. Primary objectives are to enhance the time representation of the seasonal cycle in the real time and reanalysis systems, and to provide a better control of the production in the equatorial regions.In that framework, Mercator Ocean International has successfully updated its global biogeochemical analysis and forecasting system with an Ocean Color data assimilation capability. In this system, successfully commissioned in September 2019, the biogeochemical model (NEMO/PISCES) is offline coupled with the dynamical ocean (1/12° coarsened to 1/4° resolution) from the CMEMS global physical analysis and forecasting operational system (PSY4), at a daily frequency, and benefits from the assimilation of satellite (SSH-SST-SIC) and in situ physical data. Nevertheless, a biogeochemical climatological damping is activated in the biogeochemical model in order to mitigate the impact of some misconstrained processes (vertical velocities) from this physical data-assimilated forcing (under investigation). The dedicated assimilation of biogeochemical data relies on a simplified version of the SEEK filter, where the forecast error covariances are built from a fixed-basis - but seasonally variable - ensemble of anomalies computed from a multi-year numerical experiment (without biogeochemical data assimilation) with respect to a running mean. Regarding Ocean Colour observations, the system relies, as a first step, on the CMEMS Global Ocean surface chlorophyll concentration products, delivered in NRT.The objective of this presentation is thus to provide (1) a short description of the implementation of the aforementioned data assimilation methodology in the forecasting system; (2) a synthesis of the assessment of this global biogeochemical forecasting system, by cross-comparing the assimilated solution with various datasets, both spatial (Ocean Colour) and in situ (BGC-Argo, GLODAP), and (3) a synthetic overview of the impact/benefit of the assimilation of the Ocean Colour data.

The fundamental role of the ocean for life and well-being on Earth is more and more recognised at the highest political level. In 2015, the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development were adopted by world leaders. The SDG 14 ‘Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development’ is dedicated to the oceans. The mention of the ocean in the Paris Agreement signed in 2016 marked a decisive milestone. In 2018, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) has been proclaimed (https://en.unesco.org/ocean-decade): The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO will gather ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework to foster evidence-based policy-making. In fall 2019, the IPCC special report on ocean and cryosphere will be published, and will provide an opportunity to increase awareness and action before COP251 (already claimed as ‘Blue COP’).

As part of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS), an operational ocean forecasting system was developed to monitor the ocean dynamics and marine ecosystems of the European waters; and more specifically on the IBI (Iberia-Biscay-Ireland) area. The CMEMS IBI physical-biogeochemical coupled system covers the North-East Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Iceland, including the North Sea and the Western Mediterranean, with a NEMO-PISCES 1/36° model application. Since its operational launch in April 2018, this CMEMS IBI system has provided a weekly short-term (7-days) forecast of the ocean dynamics and key biogeochemical variables of the marine ecosystem. The main goal of this paper is to assess the performances of the IBI biogeochemical system, using a 7-year retrospective simulation that spans from 2010 to 2016. The model results are validated with available satellite and in situ observations from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) and the Biogeochemical-Argo float network. The simulation successfully reproduces the spatial distribution and seasonal cycles of oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll-a, and net primary production. This simulation can be a useful tool to better understand the current state and changes in the marine biogeochemistry of European waters. It can also provide key variables for developing indicators to monitor the health of European marine ecosystems. These indicators may be of interest to scientists, policy makers, environmental agencies and the general public.

The North Atlantic bloom corresponds to a strong seasonal increase in phytoplankton that produces organic carbon through photosynthesis. It is still debated what physical and biological conditions trigger the bloom, because comprehensive time series of the vertical distribution of phytoplankton biomass are lacking. Vertical profiles from nine floats that sampled the waters of the North Atlantic every few days for a couple of years reveal that phytoplankton populations start growing in early winter at very weak rates. A proper bloom with rapidly accelerating population growth rates instead starts only in spring when atmospheric cooling subsides and the mixed layer rapidly shoals. While the weak accumulation of phytoplankton in winter is crucial to maintaining a viable population, the spring bloom dominates the overall seasonal production of organic carbon., The drivers of North Atlantic phytoplankton bloom have been debated for decades, partially owing to incomplete sub-surface observations. Here, Mignot et al. use robotic sensors to provide detailed observations of developing blooms and to explore the drivers of different phases of plankton growth.

The South Pacific Subtropical Gyre (SPSG) is a vast and remote area where large uncertainties on variability in phytoplankton biomass and production remain due to the lack of biogeochemical in situ observations. In such oligotrophic environments, ecosystems are predominantly controlled by nutrients depletion in surface waters. However, this oligotrophic character can be disturbed in the vicinity of islands where enhancement of biological activity is known to occur (i.e. the island mass effect, IME). This study mainly focuses on in situ observations showing that an IME can be evidenced leeward of Tahiti (17.7° S–149.5° W), French Polynesia. Concomitant physical and biogeochemical observations collected with two Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) profiling floats from April 2015 to November 2016 are used to investigate the dynamics of phytoplankton biomass. The first float has a transit of more than 1000 km westward of Tahiti (open ocean conditions) while the second one remained in the Tahitian wake (around 45 km from the island coasts). In the oligotrophic central SPSG, the wintertime increase in upper layer chlorophyll a concentration is likely due to photoacclimation process. Vertical observations show a light-driven deepening of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) from winter to summer, consistently with previous descriptions. At the opposite, within the Tahitian wake, the DCM temporary widens during late spring in association with a biological enhancement in the upper layer. Combining in situ measurements with meteorological data along the Tahiti coasts, Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model outputs and satellite-derived products (i.e., horizontal currents and associated fronts), the physical mechanisms involved in the disturbance of phytoplankton seasonal cycle in the Tahitian wake have been investigated. This disturbance results from the concomitant occurrence of strong precipitations and a zone of weak currents leeward Tahiti. We conjecture that the land drainage induces a significant supply of nitrate in the ocean upper layer (down to ~ 100 m) while a zone of weak currents in the southwestern zone behind Tahiti forms an accumulation zone, hence allowing phytoplankton growth up to 20 km away from the coastlines. Moreover, bio-optical measurements suggest that the composition of phytoplankton community could differ in the Tahitian wake vs. the open ocean area. Finally, in addition to extending information to the water column, only BGC-Argo floats could provide biogeochemical measurements in the SPSG region when clouds prevent the use of remote sensing.

International audience; A neural network-based method is developed to assess the vertical distribution of (1) chlorophyll a concentration ([Chl]) and (2) phytoplankton community size indices (i.e., microphytoplankton, nanophytoplankton, and picophytoplankton) from in situ vertical profiles of chlorophyll fluorescence. This method (FLAVOR for Fluorescence to Algal communities Vertical distribution in the Oceanic Realm) uses as input only the shape of the fluorescence profile associated with its acquisition date and geo-location. The neural network is trained and validated using a large database including 896 concomitant in situ vertical profiles of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) pigments and fluorescence. These profiles were collected during 22 oceanographic cruises representative of the global ocean in terms of trophic and oceanographic conditions, making our method applicable to most oceanic waters. FLAVOR is validated with respect to the retrieval of both [Chl] and phytoplankton size indices using an independent in situ data set and appears to be relatively robust spatially and temporally. To illustrate the potential of the method, we applied it to in situ measurements of the BATS (Bermuda Atlantic Time Series Study) site and produce monthly climatologies of [Chl] and associated phytoplankton size indices. The resulting climatologies appear very promising compared to climatologies based on available in situ HPLC data. With the increasing availability of spatially and temporally well-resolved data sets of chlorophyll fluorescence, one possible global-scale application of FLAVOR could be to develop 3-D and even 4-D climatologies of [Chl] and associated composition of phytoplankton communities. The Matlab and R codes of the proposed algorithm are provided as supporting information.

In vivo fluorescence of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) is a potentially useful property to study the vertical distribution of phytoplankton biomass. However the technique is presently not fully exploited as it should be, essentially because of the difficulties in converting the fluorescence signal into an accurate Chl-a concentration. These difficulties arise noticeably from natural variations in the Chl-a fluorescence relationship, which is under the control of community composition as well as of their nutrient and light status. As a consequence, although vertical profiles of fluorescence are likely the most recorded biological property in the open ocean, the corresponding large databases are underexploited. Here with the aim to convert a fluorescence profile into a Chl-a concentration profile, we test the hypothesis that the Chl-a concentration can be gathered from the sole knowledge of the shape of the fluorescence profile. We analyze a large dataset from 18 oceanographic cruises conducted in case-1 waters from the highly stratified hyperoligotrophic waters (surface Chl-a = 0.02 mg m−3) of the South Pacific Gyre to the eutrophic waters of the Benguela upwelling (surface Chl-a = 32 mg m−3) and including the very deep mixed waters in the North Atlantic (Mixed Layer Depth = 690 m). This dataset encompasses more than 700 vertical profiles of Chl-a fluorescence as well as accurate estimations of Chl-a by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Two typical fluorescence profiles are identified, the uniform profile, characterized by a homogeneous layer roughly corresponding to the mixed layer, and the non-uniform profile, characterized by the presence of a Deep Chlorophyll Maximum. Using appropriate mathematical parameterizations, a fluorescence profile is subsequently represented by 3 or 5 shape parameters for uniform or non-uniform profiles, respectively. For both situations, an empirical model is developed to predict the "true" Chl-a concentration from these shape parameters. This model is then used to calibrate a fluorescence profile in Chl-a units. The validation of the approach provides satisfactory results with a median absolute percent deviation of 33 % when comparing the HPLC Chl-a profiles to the Chl-a-calibrated fluorescence. The proposed approach thus opens the possibility to produce Chl-a climatologies from uncalibrated fluorescence profile databases that have been acquired in the past and to which numerous new profiles will be added, thanks to the recent availability of autonomous platforms (profiling floats, gliders and animals) instrumented with miniature fluorometers.

The North Atlantic spring bloom is a massive annual growth event of marine phytoplankton, tiny free-floating algae that form the base of the ocean's food web and generates a large fraction of the global primary production of organic matter. The conditions that trigger the onset of the spring bloom in the Nordic Seas, at the northern edge of the North Atlantic, are studied using in situ data from six bio-optical floats released north of the Arctic Circle. It is often assumed that spring blooms start as soon as phytoplankton cells daily irradiance is sufficiently abundant that division rates exceed losses. The bio-optical float data instead suggest the tantalizing hypothesis that Nordic Seas blooms start when the photoperiod, the number of daily light hours experienced by phytoplankton, exceeds a critical value, independently of division rates. The photoperiod trigger may have developed at high latitudes where photosynthesis is impossible during polar nights and phytoplankton enters into a dormant stage in winter. While the first accumulation of biomass recorded by the bio-optical floats is consistent with the photoperiod hypothesis, it is possible that some biomass accumulation started before the critical photoperiod but at levels too low to be detected by the fluorometers. International audience; We deployed four Bio-Argo profiling floats in various oligotrophic locations of the Pacific subtropical gyres and Mediterranean Sea to address the seasonal phytoplankton dynamics in the euphotic layer and explore its dependence on light regime dynamics. Results show that there is a similar phytoplankton biomass seasonal pattern in the four observed oceanic regions. In the lower part of the euphotic layer, the seasonal displacement of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) is light driven. During winter, the chlorophyll a concentration ([Chl a]) always increases in the upper euphotic mixed layer. This increase always results from a photoacclimation to the reduced irradiance. Depending on the location, however, the concentration can also be associated with an actual increase in biomass. The winter increase in [Chl a] results in an increase in irradiance attenuation that impacts the position of the isolume (level where the daily integrated photon flux is constant) and DCM, which becomes shallower. In summer when the [Chl a] in the upper layer decreases along with light attenuation, the DCM deepens and becomes closer to (and sometimes reaches) the nitracline, which enhances the phytoplankton biomass at the DCM. The bio-optical mechanisms and their relationship to light regimes that are revealed by the time series appear to be generic and potentially characteristic of all of the areas where a DCM forms, which is 50% of the open ocean.

International audience; Based on in situ data sets collected using two Bio-Argo floats deployed in the subpolar North Atlantic from June 2008 to May 2010, the present study focuses on the seasonal variability of three bio-optical properties, i.e., chlorophyll-a concentration ([Chla]), particle backscattering coefficient at 532 nm (b(bp)(532)), and particle beam attenuation coefficient at 660 nm (c(p)(660)). In addition, the interrelationships among these properties are examined. Our results show that: (1) [Chla], b(bp)(532) and c(p)(660) are largely well coupled with each other in the upper layer, all being minimum in mid-winter (January) and maximum in summer; (2) the backscattering coefficient presents an abrupt increase in late summer in the Icelandic Basin, likely due to a large contribution of coccolithophores following the diatom spring bloom; (3) the intercorrelations between the three bio-optical properties are basically consistent with previous studies; (4) seasonal variation in the of [Chla] to c(p)(660) ratio exhibits a clear light-dependence, most likely due to the phytoplankton photoacclimation.

International audience; A new estimate of the Global Ocean 3D geostrophic circulation from the surface down to 1500 m depth (Surcouf3D) has been computed for the 1993-2008 period using an observation-based approach that combines altimetry with temperature and salinity through the thermal wind equation. The validity of this simple approach was tested using a consistent dataset from a model reanalysis. Away from the boundary layers, errors are less than 10% in most places, which indicate that the thermal wind equation is a robust approximation to reconstruct the 3D oceanic circulation in the ocean interior. The Surcouf3D current field was validated in the Atlantic Ocean against in-situ observations. We considered the ANDRO current velocities deduced at 1000 m depth from Argo float displacements as well as velocity measurements at 26.5°N from the RAPID-MOCHA current meter array. The Surcouf3D currents show similar skill to the 3D velocities from the GLORYS Mercator Ocean reanalysis in reproducing the amplitude and variability of the ANDRO currents. In the upper 1000 m, high correlations are also found with in-situ velocities measured by the RAPID-MOCHA current meters. The Surcouf3D current field was then used to compute estimates of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) through the 25°N section, showing good comparisons with hydrographic sections from 1998 and 2004. Monthly averaged AMOC time series are also consistent with the RAPID-MOCHA array and with the GLORYS Mercator Ocean reanalysis over the April 2004-September 2007 period. Finally a 15 years long time series of monthly estimates of the AMOC was computed. The AMOC strength has a mean value of 16 Sv with an annual (resp. monthly) standard deviation of 2.4 Sv (resp. 7.1 Sv) over the 1993-2008 period. The time series, characterized by a strong variability, shows no significant trend.

participant; The subtropical gyres represent 40% of the total ocean. They have been considered, since a long time, as steady state biological desert due to low nutrients and phytoplankton biomass throughout the year. Primary production (carbon uptake by phytoplankton) is low too in these regions, but as these structures are huge, it makes the total contribution to ocean primary production important. The South Pacific gyre is considered to be the place where the phytoplankton biomass is the lowest in the global ocean. This area remains poorly sampled and studied, that's why the seasonal variability of phytoplankton, primary production and physical forcing remains unclear. By using in-situ bio-optical profiling float capable to measure physical parameters (temperature and salinity) and proxy of the phytoplankton biomass in the water column, we acquired one year of data near the eastern islands (in the middle of the South Pacific gyre). We found a seasonal variability of the phytoplankton biomass and the carbon flux. This variability is driven by the vertical structure density of the ocean, from very low phytoplankton biomass and carbon uptake in winter (due to the mixing of the water column) to low phytoplankton biomass and carbon uptake in summer (associated with strong stratification). Studying the interaction between the physical forcing and phytoplankton biomass in the subtropical gyres is essential. Any increase in sea water temperature will change the stratification of the water column and thus affect the annual carbon fluxes budget.
