Iceberg discharge influences ocean circulation, affects climate and increases global sea level. Icebergs are also known to gouge the seafloor in water depths limited by their keel depth, thus representing a hazard to subsea infrastructure. Here, we provide evidence that icebergs can affect the seafloor at depths greater than their keel depth by triggering submarine landslides. Using repeat bathymetric surveys from multibeam echo sounders, we investigate the cause of a submarine landslide that occurred in Southwind Fjord, Baffin Island, between September 2018 and September 2019. This landslide is shown to be closely associated with recently formed iceberg pits at its headscarp carved by an iceberg that grounded and that capsized in the fjord in early September 2018. Geotechnical data from a nearby sediment core indicate that the vertical loading induced by the iceberg grounding and capsizing is sufficient to trigger the observed landslide. These results imply that icebergs originating from the Arctic, Greenland and Antarctica are hazards thousands of kilometres away from their original source and can affect continental slopes by triggering submarine landslides. This process represents an additional source of marine geohazards, especially if climate change leads to increased iceberg discharge. Iceberg gouging of continental slopes can initiate submarine landslides, potentially far from the iceberg source region, according to observations and geotechnical analysis of an event in a Baffin Island fjord.

Turbidity currents in submarine canyons transport large volumes of sediment and carbon to the deep sea and are known to present a major risk to submarine infrastructure. Understanding the origin, the triggers, the recurrence, and the timing of these events is important for predicting future events and mitigating their impact. Depending on the morphological and latitudinal setting of submarine canyons, different external controls will govern the recurrence of turbidity currents. Here, we assess the recurrence of turbidity currents in shelf-incising submarine canyons off eastern Canada in order to examine the effects of external forcings such as glacier retreat and sea level on the deep-water sedimentary record. We used multibeam bathymetry, sub-bottom profiles, and the analysis of turbidites in sediment cores to infer the triggers of turbidity currents over time and propose a conceptual model for the activity of turbidity currents during glacial retreat. The chronostratigraphy of turbidites shows that turbidity current activity in the glaciated The Gully submarine canyon (eastern Canada) was highest between 24 ka cal BP (LGM) and 17 ka cal BP, with > 100 turbidites per 1,000 yr, when the ice sheet was directly delivering sediment to submarine canyons. As the ice margin retreated, the dominant sediment supply switched to glaciofluvial and then to longshore drift, while RSL remained low. The recurrence of turbidity currents nonetheless decreased drastically to < 10 per 1000 yr during that time, pre-dating the rise in RSL. This timing suggests that the reduction of turbidity-current activity is closely linked to retreating glaciers rather than to sea-level rise, which occurred later. Following the retreat of the ice sheet, sea level rose progressively to drown the shallow banks on the continental shelf, and turbidity currents ceased being active after 13 ka cal BP. In the late Holocene, landslide and concomitant turbidity-current recurrence increased to 1 per 1,000 yrs, with at least four new events recorded in deep water. This study shows that glacial sediment supply and sea level controlled the type of sediment supply to the continental slope, which in turn controlled the triggers of turbidity currents over time and the flushing of sediment to the deep water. By comparing with other glaciated margins, we propose a conceptual model explaining the recurrence of turbidity currents, taking into account RSL change and the position of the ice margin relative to the shelf edge. This conceptual model can help predict turbidity-current activity and offshore geohazards on other ancient and modern glaciated continental margins.

How climate controls tropical cyclone variability has critical implications for modern human society but is not well understood due to the short length of observational records. To probe this knowledge gap, we present a synthesis of intense typhoon activity from the northwestern Pacific over the past 2000 years, which is supported by a new, well-resolved tidal flat sedimentary record from the Jiangsu coast, eastern China. The record reveals nine intervals of typhoon frequency, indicating that the frequency of intense typhoons has varied on multi-centennial scales over the past 2000 years. Our synthesis shows strong evidence for a seesaw pattern of intense typhoon frequency between southeastern China and Japan and Korea. This pattern can be explained by the El Niño and Southern Oscillation–East Asian Monsoon–sea surface temperature hypothesis, which potentially explains the basin-wide typhoon climate in the northwestern Pacific region. A shift in typhoon activity was identified from 550–280 to 280–50 yr B.P. during the Little Ice Age, when typhoon activity changed from active to quiescent or vice versa. Centennial-scale shifts in Intertropical Convergence Zone and Western Pacific Warm Pool sea surface temperature are likely to be the primary forcing mechanisms driving this shift. Results obtained here provide links between typhoon activity and the El Niño and Southern Oscillation, the East Asian Monsoon, and the Western Pacific Warm Pool sea surface temperature, and therefore improve our ability to fully assess intense typhoon activity in future climate warming.

Fjord environments are subject to submarine mass wasting events due to their steep slopes, high sedimentation rates, and tectonic activity driven by glacial-isostatic rebound. In specific cases, these events can generate tsunami waves whose coastal heights are strongly influenced by the physiography, both subaerial and submarine, of the fjord. Here we present modeling simulations of a potential tsunami initiated by a submarine landslide in Pangnirtung Fjord, eastern Baffin Island (Nunavut, Canada). Pangnirtung Fjord, a 43 km long, 1 to 3 km wide, and 165 m deep fjord, is fed by numerous rivers that transport sediment from the surrounding high-relief, partially glaciated landscape. Collapse of the Kolik River delta, situated directly across from the hamlet of Pangnirtung, is the likely cause of the largest submarine landslide (2.1 km2) identified in the fjord using multibeam bathymetric data and 3.5 kHz sub-bottom profiles collected in 2019. The mapped landslide extends across the flat basin and features a blocky deposit directly downslope of the delta. The landslide dynamics, the consequent water waves generation and propagation were simulated by means of codes developed by the Tsunami Research Team of Bologna University. The landslide parameters characterizing the downslope motion have been retrieved by matching the landslide dynamics with the observed deposit. As the landslide impulses to the water column are considered, the propagation of the waves inside the fjord is determined through the shallow water approximation of the Navier-Stokes set of equations. The waves reach the hamlet (3.5 km from the landslide source) in 200 s, and the surrounding fjord coasts in approximately 800 s. Maximum wave height values of approximately 2 m were modeled and used to construct an inundation map for the area, over a 2 m regularly spaced grid for the hamlet of Pangnirtung.

International audience; High-resolution imagery of the morphological character of modern active turbidite systems are critical for understanding the complexity of turbidity current processes occurring on the seafloor. Here, we describe a 30 cm-resolution autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) repeat bathymetric dataset that allows to significantly increase the geomorphological detail of crescentic bedforms in turbidite systems. This repeat imagery shows the erosion produced by dense basal layers at the base of turbidity currents, the inception of plunge pools, and the controls that hydraulic jump troughs have on subsequent flow path of weaker turbidity currents. Transverse small-scale scours located in cyclic step troughs suggest that weak flows follow local relief, therefore explaining the wide variability of turbidity current flow indicators observed in outcrops. This imagery demonstrates that turbidite systems are formed by the superimposition of erosion surfaces and depositional patterns recording contrasted flow behavior and provides new views on turbidity current behaviour in natural environments.

International audience; Glacier and ice sheet mass loss as a result of climate change is driving important coastal changes in Arctic fjords. Yet limited information exists for Arctic coasts regarding the influence of glacial erosion and ice mass loss on the occurrence and character of turbidity currents in fjords, which themselves affect delta dynamics. Here we show how glacial erosion and the production of meltwaters and sediments associated with the melting of retreating glaciers control the generation of turbidity currents in fjords of eastern Baffin Island (Canada). The subaqueous parts of 31 river mouths along eastern Baffin Island were mapped by high-resolution swath bathymetry in order to assess the presence or absence of sediment waves formed by turbidity currents on delta fronts. By extracting glaciological and hydrological watershed characteristics of these river mouths, we demonstrate that the presence and areal extent of glaciers are a key control for generating turbidity currents in fjords. However, lakes formed upstream during glacial retreat significantly alter the course of sediment routing to the deltas by forming temporary sinks, leading to the cessation of turbidity currents in the fjords. Due to the different deglaciation stages of watersheds in eastern Baffin Island, we put these results into a temporal framework of watershed deglaciation to demonstrate how the retreat pattern of glaciers, through the formation and filling of proglacial lakes, affects the turbidity current activity of deltas.

Tectonically controlled topography influences deep-water sedimentary systems. Using 3-D seismic reflection data from the Levant Basin, eastern Mediterranean Sea, we investigate the spatial and temporal evolution of bedforms on a deep-water fan cut by an active normal fault. In the footwall, the fan comprises cyclic steps and antidunes along its axial and external portions, respectively, which we interpret to result from the spatial variation in flow velocity due to the loss of confinement at the canyon mouth. Conversely, in the hanging wall, the seafloor is nearly featureless at seismic scale. Numerical modeling of turbidity currents shows that the fault triggers a hydraulic jump that suppresses the flow velocity downstream, which thus explains the lack of visible bedforms basinward. This study shows that the topography generated by active normal faulting controls the downslope evolution of turbidity currents and the associated bedforms and that seafloor geomorphology can be used to evince syn-tectonic deposition., peer-reviewed

Climatological studies show that Baffin Island ice caps (Barnes and Penny) are highly sensitive to global climatic changes. However, there is little high temporal resolution data available to study the long-term response of Baffin Island ice caps to climate change. While most of the sedimentary climate records in the region are obtained from lake sediments, there is less information from glaciomarine sediments. High sedimentation rates that characterize fjords in glaciomarine environments make these sites ideal to study the impact of climate and oceanographic changes on tidewater glacier dynamics at high-temporal resolution. In this context, a piston core (AMD2019-804-12PC) recovered in the Coronation Fjord (Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada) in an ice-proximal environment was investigated using physical, grain-size, mineralogical, geochemical, and magnetic properties to document changes in sediment transfers from the Penny Ice Cap (PIC) in relation to Late Holocene climate variability. The chronostratigraphic framework of this core was developed by combining AMS 14C and paleomagnetic analysis. The physical and sedimentological analysis show that core 12PC is characterized by laminated mud sediments interspersed with fine sand and disseminated ice-rafted debris (IRD). The biotite+chlorite-plagioclase-feldspar ternary diagram reveals a homogeneous detrital input with a composition characteristic of the Cumberland Batholith. These sedimentary characteristics are interpreted as a product of suspension settling and muddy density flows from turbid meltwater plumes related with the PIC dynamic. Results also reveal two lithofacies (LF) related with distinct glacial regimes. LF1 (601-280 cm; 1500-1800 AD), which covers the Little Ice Age period, is characterized by a high IRD content, below-average values in biotite+chlorite/quartz, low variations in Zr/Ti and Fe/Al, suggesting enhanced tidewater glacier discharge likely associated with the growth of the PIC. LF2 (280-0 cm; 1800 AD to present) is defined by a decrease in IRD content, above-average values in biotite+chlorite/quartz, and high variations in Zr/Ti and Fe/Al, interpreted as representing the retreat of the glacier to its present-day extent in response to modern warming. Similar trends observed between our detrital proxies and the Arctic surface air temperature anomalies, the chironomid-inferred summer-temperature from a nearby lake, and melt feature record from the PIC, suggest high connectivity between atmospheric temperatures variations and the sedimentary dynamics of the PIC during the last 400 years.

Hydroacoustic surveys were conducted in eight fjord-lakes of Québec-Labrador in order to analyse their Late-Quaternary geomorphological and stratigraphic record of glaciation, paleoseismicity and postglacial environmental changes. This large morphostratigraphic dataset provided a unique opportunity to establish a conceptual model of the evolution for fjord-lakes in relation to deglaciation, glacio-isostatic rebound, sediment fluxes and paleoseismicity. The analysis of the morphology and distribution of many morainic deposits into the fjord-lakes (hummocky moraines, morainic sills and morainic complexes) allows relating their formation to the glacial erosion potential, as well as to climatic and topographic controls. During past glaciations, a topographic sill was left uneroded at the opening of valleys due to the decrease in the glacial erosion potential associated with the lateral extension of the glacier down-ice; this bedrock sill created in turn an anchoring point to the ice during deglaciation. Hummocky moraines were documented at the outlet of five fjord-lakes that are located within the deepest and narrowest valleys of the studied systems. Based on our analysis of these sublacustrine landform-sediment assemblages, fjord-lakes constitute distinct sedimentary systems that should be differentiated from typical fjord system (i.e., in marine waters). The large-scale landforms contained in the fjord-lakes of Québec-Labrador (i.e., esker, moraines, gullies, lateral banks, turbidity channels and circular cavities) are inherited from their past subglacial, glaciomarine and paraglacial conditions, while only small deltaic bedforms (i.e., sediment waves and crescent-shaped bedforms) were formed in postglacial times. The present-day hydrological regime of fjord-lakes of Québec-Labrador is considered river-driven, except for the lakes located near active seismic zones where widespread postglacial mass-movements are documented.

High-latitude fiords are susceptible to hazardous subaerial and submarine slope failures. Recent investigations have shown that past slope failures in fiords of Greenland and Alaska have generated devastating landslide induced tsunamis. Since coastal communities inhabit these high-latitude fiords, it is critical to understand the slope failure recurrence time, their distribution, potential triggers, and ability to generate tsunamis. In this study, we identified > 50 near-surface submarine landslides in Pangnirtung Fiord, eastern Baffin Island, Nunavut, using multibeam bathymetric and sub-bottom profiler data, along with sediment gravity-cores collected in 2019. Morphometric and morphological analyses, along with sedimentological analyses, were carried out on submarine landslide deposits to quantify their spatial and temporal distribution throughout the fiord and to evaluate the factors that may have triggered the slope failures.Combining bathymetric with topographic data from unmanned aerial vehicle imagery, we found that most of these landslide deposits are relatively small (~ 0.08 km2) and are associated with outwash fans and steep fiord sidewalls. However, since most slope failure head scarps lie between the intertidal zone and ~30 m water depth, they could not be mapped, which makes it challenging to determine the triggers of the submarine slope failures. Radiocarbon dating reveals that most of these surficial landslide deposits are younger than 500 years old and that they were most likely triggered at different times. This finding highlights a high recurrence rate of slope failures within the fiord, suggesting that localised triggers are responsible for slope failures within the fiord, as opposed to widespread, seismically induced triggers which do not occur as frequently in the study area. In addition, the elongated morphology of the landslide deposits and the varying degrees of landslide deposit surface roughness supports localised point-source triggers. Since most landslides are associated with subaerial outwash fans and deltas, we suggest that triggers of these relatively frequent submarine landslides within Pangnirtung Fiord include rapid floodwater input, subaerial debris flows, and sea-ice loading during low tide.This research shows that slope failures in a high-latitude fiord are affected by the interaction of numerous subaerial and submarine processes, leading us to speculate that a potential increase in the frequency of subaerial debris flows and river floods due to climate change may increase the recurrence of submarine landslides.

International audience; Cyclic‐step bedforms typifying a Froude‐supercritical flow regime are a recurrent component of depositional/erosional turbiditic systems. Over modern delta slopes, cyclic steps have been inferred from observations of upslope‐migrating crescent‐shaped bedforms. However, the recognition in the sedimentary record of the resulting stratal pattern and depositional facies remains challenging. In this study, the depositional facies observed in exposed late Quaternary glaciofluvial upper delta‐slope sands (Portneuf‐Forestville, Québec) are compared to those cored from a modern analogue consisting of sediment waves interpreted as cyclic steps (Southwind Fjord, Baffin Island). The fossil and modern delta slopes share similar context, morphology and stratigraphic record. The clinoform foresets dip 2 to 6° and consist of prevailing sand‐sized material including subhorizontal to upslope‐dipping top‐cut‐out turbidites. Individually, the latter are 5 to 20 cm thick and massive to planar laminated (prevailing TA and TB subdivisions). In the fossil delta slope, related successions form relatively thick, well‐bedded suites, which are truncated downcurrent by, and onlap upstreamward on, inclined composite erosion surfaces here referred to as pseudo‐foresets. Pseudo‐foresets are regularly spaced (10 to 30 m) and have dips greater than the clinoform foresets (ca 20°). Large composite scours form pseudo‐channel structures filled in by structureless pebbly sand deformed by sheared flame structures, in association with coarse sand showing undulating lamination and rip‐up clasts. Similar depositional facies are observed on the modern delta slope. The stratal pattern is best compatible with upslope‐migrating bedforms and structureless sand indicates hydraulic jump deposits typical of cyclic steps. Cyclic‐step flow events, encompassing a succession of genetically linked erosional cyclic steps, depositional cyclic steps and subsequent waning‐flow conditions, were associated with the dense basal layer of high‐density (stratified) turbidity currents. They are specifically associated with pseudo‐channel incision and infill. The deposition of well‐bedded suites on the stoss side, occasionally also on the lee side, is interpreted to result from a different type of turbidity current, which decelerated over the bedform stoss and accelerated over the lee sides of pre‐existing cyclic‐step morphologies. Antidunal flow conditions in expanded (non‐stratified) turbidity currents are tentatively suggested, deposition being linked, in this case, to interactions between inherited bedform morphologies and a near‐bed tractive layer. In the resulting dual flow model, the bulk of delta‐slope sands was mainly deposited from turbidity currents not developing a cyclic‐step instability, yet cyclic steps were instrumental in shaping and/or re‐organizing the delta‐slope morphology, bedforms and resulting stratal patterns. In some delta systems, the upslope migration of supercritical crescentic bedforms may not be only due to repetitive cyclic steps but could also result from antidunal turbidity current conditions remobilizing an inherited cyclically‐stepped morphology.

Investigation of seismic activity in eastern Canada is important for natural hazard management as two major active seismic zones with many historical records are located in the region: the Western Québec seismic zone (WQSZ) and the Charlevoix–Kamouraska seismic zone (CKSZ), with the latter being the most active in northeastern America. This paper describes and analyses a dataset of high-resolution swath bathymetric imagery, sub-bottom profiles, and sediments cores collected in three lakes (Maskinongé, Aux-Sables, and St-Joseph) located between two active seismic zones. The geomorphology observed on high-resolution swath bathymetric imagery, the acoustic sub-bottom profiles, and the sediment analysis indicate that the lakes were disturbed by three phases of seismically induced mass movements since deglaciation: (i) during the deglacial Champlain Sea transgression and the rapid initial glacio-isostatic rebound between ∼13 and 10.5 ka cal BP; (ii) around 1180 AD; and (iii) the well-documented CKSZ 1663 AD M >7 historical earthquake. The second phase of earthquake events (1180 AD) corresponds chronologically to a previously documented large landslide in western Québec, dated at ∼1020 years BP. This earthquake is responsible for remobilizing the largest volume of sediments in the entire stratigraphic sequence of Lake Maskinongé, the westernmost lake. This earthquake was not recorded in Lake Aux-Sables and St-Joseph, which are located eastward from Maskinongé, but the largest mass movement deposits are associated with the well-known 1663 AD event of eastern Québec. Therefore, both earthquake events are interpreted to have different epicenters and the lakes of southeastern Québec recorded earthquakes from both seismic zones.

Cold seeps occur where fluids, such as hydrocarbons, migrate from depth and escape at the seabed. They are relatively common features in petroleum basins around the world. Cold seeps often host unique biological communities and are a potential geological hazard as they can indicate excess pore fluid pressures in shallow sediments. In addition, they can provide critical information about fluid migration pathways and fluid source. This study presents the detailed geomorphology and seismic stratigraphy of recently discovered cold seeps in 2700 metres water depth offshore Nova Scotia, Canada. Petroleum industry 3D seismic reflection data, high-resolution single channel G.I. gun and sparker seismic reflection data, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) sidescan, swath bathymetry, and sub-bottom profiler data were used to investigate the geomorphology of the cold seep and surrounding seabed. Piston core samples and seabed photography were also acquired in the study area.The geomorphology in the study area is dominated by the seafloor expression of a salt diapir (L. Triassic to E. Jurassic). Despite being buried by ~1700 m of Cretaceous to Holocene sediment, the diapir forms an oblong mound, 10 km long by 5 km wide that rises 200 m above the surrounding seabed. Two major orthogonal faults are apparent on the seabed that cut the mound along its major and minor axes. Several crestal faults are imaged in the 3D seismic data but do not have a seabed expression. AUV data acquired over the crest of the diapir reveal a 500 m by 200 m fissure on the western flank of the diapir. The fissure is composed of a blocky central zone along its axis, and radiating “cracks” that show backscatter variation, possibly indicating recent fluid expulsion. Integration of the AUV data with the 3D seismic data show that the fissure is fed by a vertical chimney that intersects a bottom simulating reflection above the diapir. Remarkably, the chimney does not appear to be related to any of the sub-vertical crestal faults. Another seep occurs on the eastern flank of the diapir crest and, in contrast, coincides with a crestal fault. There is also evidence for mass wasting down-dip from the fault. Core samples recovered from the second seep contained gas hydrate. In both cases, the cold seeps present as very subtle features on the 3D seismic reflection data and are only positively identified in the AUV datasets. This study shows that conventional surface-acquired acoustic data are potentially insufficient for detecting cold seep morphologies in deep-water settings.

In the deepest portions of many lakes, zones of high-conductivity bottom water (HCBW) depleted in dissolved oxygen (DO) are present. HCBW and DO are important for determining benthic diversity and abundance, nutrients, and contaminant cycling and understanding the long-term evolution of lakes. We investigate the persistence and removal of HCBW and DO replenishment in a High Arctic lake using physical properties and flow velocity data along with hydrometric and suspended sediment inflow data over a 4 year monitoring period (2007–2010). HCBW was removed in 2007 and 2008 but largely remained in 2009 and 2010. Catchment disturbances in 2007 increased suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) in the inflowing river in 2007 and 2008. In the later two years of monitoring (2009 and 2010), fluvial sediment availability relaxed to pre-disturbance levels. High SSC in 2007 and 2008 caused by landscape disturbances formed sustained river-generated hyperpycnal flows during the snowmelt period that are linked to HCBW removal. In 2009 and 2010, inflowing river water was periodically denser than lake water; however, HCBW was not removed in these years. Hyperpycnal flows were likely either of insufficient strength or duration, deposited on the delta front, or followed paths that led away from the deepest portion of the lake. Results suggest that hyperpycnal flow frequency will increase and HCBW persistence will decrease with projected climate change due to an increase in fluvial SSC inflow. Water density changes resulting from increased electrical conductivity and water temperature are not likely to have a similarly large effect on hyperpycnal flow frequency and HCBW.

The Laurentian Fan is one of the largest submarine fans on the western margin of the North Atlantic. Recently acquired high-resolution multibeam bathymetric data (60 m horizontal resolution) reveal a major mass transport deposit (MTD) on the Western Levee of Western Valley (WLWV), covering >14 000 km2 in water depths from 3900 m to >5000 m. Typical submarine landslide features are observed such as headscarps that in places reach the crest of the levee, crown cracks, extensional ridges, blocky debris and flow lineations. Multiple headwalls are observed on 3.5 kHz sub-bottom profiles indicating that the landslide retrogressed upslope. While the upper parts of the MTD consist of intact blocks that were displaced downslope as ridges and troughs, the lower parts exhibit a ~30 m thick incoherent to transparent acoustic facies typical of debris flows. Landslide geomorphology thus suggests that it was generated as a retrogressive spread and that slide blocks disintegrated downslope to become a blocky landslide with a surficial debris flow. The blocky landslide/debris flow extends downslope ~90 km and partially fills a submarine channel. The superposition of the MTD filling the channel and its location at the top of the stratigraphic succession in the levee suggests that it is late Quaternary in age, possibly Holocene. Deeper seismic reflection data also show that this is a rare event during the Quaternary; it is the largest MTD observed in the upper ~375 m of the levee succession and among the largest and deepest in the Western North Atlantic.

The paleogeographic reconstruction of the successive inland positions of a retreating ice sheet is generally constrained by mapping moraines. However, deltaic complexes constructed by sediment-charged meltwater can also provide a record of the retreating ice-margin positions. Here, we examine a serie of ice-contact, ice-distal glaciofluvial and paraglacial depositional systems that developed along the Québec North Shore (eastern Canada) in the context of falling relative sea level during the northward retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS). Ice-contact depositional systems formed when the LIS was stillstanding along the Québec North Shore. Subsequent inland retreat of the ice margin generated glacial meltwaters feeding sediment to glaciofluvial deltas, leading to their rapid progradation. The retreat of the ice margin from drainage basins was marked by the onset of paraglacial processes such as the shutdown of delta progradation, severe fluvial entrenchment, and deposition of shallow-marine strata. Four end-member scenarios describe the spatial and stratigraphic distribution of these three depositional systems (ice-contact deposits, ice-distal glaciofluvial deltas, and paraglacial suites). They reflect both the inherited drainage basin physiography and the retreat pattern of the ice margin. Applied to twenty deltaic complexes, these end-members allowed us to refine the model of LIS-margin retreat over southeastern Québec.

Permafrost exerts an important control over hydrological processes in Arctic landscapes and lakes. Recent warming and summer precipitation has the potential to alter water availability and quality in this environment through thermal perturbation of near surface permafrost and increased mobility of previously frozen solutes to Arctic freshwaters. We present a unique thirteen-year record (2003–16) of the physiochemical properties of two High Arctic lakes and show that the concentration of major ions, especially SO42−, has rapidly increased up to 500% since 2008. This hydrochemical change has occurred synchronously in both lakes and ionic ratio changes in the lakes indicate that the source for the SO42− is compositionally similar to terrestrial sources arising from permafrost thaw. Record summer temperatures during this period (2003–16) following over 100 years of warming and summer precipitation in this polar desert environment provide likely mechanisms for this rapid chemical change. An abrupt limnological change is also reflected in the otolith chemistry and improved relative condition of resident Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and increased diatom diversity point to a positive ecosystem response during the same period.

Quaternary glaciations played a critical role in producing the modern landscape of the seafloor of southeastern Canada. Glacial landscapes such as cross-shelf troughs, fjords, recessional moraines and tunnel valleys were sculpted by the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Following deglaciation, relative sea level rise led to the formation of sandy bedforms and tidal scours on the continental shelf. In contrast, the deep-water margin was not directly modified by the ice sheet, but was significantly influenced by it. Large quantities of glacigenic sediments were distributed along the continental slope during the last glacial maximum through turbidity currents, contour currents and submarine landslides. Turbidity currents eroded submarine canyons and deposited submarine fans, which are among the largest sediment accumulations in southeastern Canada. Although the continental shelf and the deep-water margin have contrasting landscapes, they are genetically linked to tectonics and the pattern of retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. This chapter gives an overview of the landscape and landforms of the seafloor of southeastern Canada and details how its glacial heritage played a major role in sculpting the modern seabed.

Print ISBN 978-3-030-35135-9Online ISBN 978-3-030-35137-3; International audience; One of the most particular morphological features of the Québec North Shore (North Shore of the Estuary and Gulf of the St. Lawrence, eastern Canada) is the occurrence of deltaic complexes that form thick and extensive sediment bodies (gravel, sand and mud) along the modern coastline. The deltaic complexes were emplaced during the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet from the region that commenced about 11 ka in the context of falling relative sea level. Deltaic complexes are made up of three distinct, superimposed depositional systems, consisting of: (1) ice-contact subaqueous fans and deltas, (2) ice-distal glacifluvial deltas, and (3) coastal suites and meandering channel belts. Ice-contact systems were emplaced immediately after deglaciation of the region at the front of the ice-margins. Subsequent ice retreat fed glacifluvial deltas in meltwater and glacigenic sediments until the complete retreat of the ice-margin from the drainage basin a few thousand years ago. The resulting shutdown in sediment supply led to the reworking of the now-inactive glacifluvial deltas by shore-related and fluvial processes that resulted in the deposition of coastal suites and meander channel belts. Submarine sediment accumulations and related morphologies revealed by high-resolution swath bathymetric and seismostratigraphic data collected off these deltaic complexes are the subaqueous counterparts of these deltas. The modern evolution of these deltaic complexes is controlled by the reworking, transport, and deposition of sediments by shore-related processes along the coast, on the shallow shelf, and through submarine channels and canyons.

The Laurentian Channel is a deep glacial trough located in Atlantic Canada, extending from the St. Lawrence Estuary to the shelf edge between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. The outer Laurentian Channel close to its entrance at the shelf edge has been designated as an Area of Interest for the establishment of a Marine Protected Area, but baseline information was lacking. Here, a benthoscape map of the outer Laurentian Channel was generated using geomorphic features mapped using multibeam sonar (density of iceberg scours and pockmarks/iceberg pits, depth and slope) and ground truthed with surficial geology samples and underwater imagery. Individual surrogates and mapped patterns were compared to faunal patterns (infauna and epifauna) derived from the ground truthing. Water depth was the main predictor of infauna abundance and richness, while both depth and density of pockmarks/iceberg pits influenced community composition. Some benthoscape classes had close associations with distinct infauna, but diffuse patterns were mostly observed. Epifauna—namely sea pens—were most abundant at the confluence of multiple benthoscape classes.

Quantification of the interaction between river discharge and tides is vital to characterize fluvio-deltaic systems, to identify diagnostic elements of tidal signatures in the rock record, and to reconstruct paleogeographies. In modern systems, even microtides can significantly influence delta morphodynamics; yet, many fundamental processes, particularly in prodeltaic settings, remain elusive. Here, by combining a unique process-product data set acquired during a flood event of the Po River (Italy) with numerical modeling, we show that tidal signatures are recorded in the open-water prodelta zone of a microtidal system. Based on the analyses of box-cores collected before and after a flood off the main distributary channel, we interpreted storm beds, tide-modulated flood strata of alternating normal and inverse graded beds, and rapid bioturbation. Modeling of the river discharge indicates that, at the peak of the flood, the steepening of the water-surface profile forced by 0.15 m lowering of sea level during low tides generated an 8% increase in river flow velocity. The alternation of profile steepness and associated cyclicity in flow strength during consecutive tidal cycles controlled the sediment load of the plume and, consequently, led to the deposition of tidal-modulated strata. Formation of microtidal signals appears to be enhanced in fluvio-deltaic successions characterized by multiple distributaries and in basins where river floods are out of phase with storm-wave activity. Bioturbation of sediment, which can start during the waning stage of the flow, and erosion by storm waves hamper the preservation of tidal signals, unless rapid burial occurs. The recognition of tidal-modulated strata in river-dominated settings may facilitate the characterization of mudstone reservoirs and reconstruction of paleogeographic conditions during deposition.

Significance Using a compilation of 14C and pollen data of lake sediment records from over 632 sites globally, we identified the timings of first increase in lake sedimentation. Changes in lake sediment rates at this time are closely linked to increased sediment supply from hillslope erosion. The analysis on the relative roles of the driving factors indicated that a significant portion of the Earth’s surface shifted to human-driven soil erosion already 4,000 y ago following land deforestation. The long-term perspective afforded by this synthesis provides evidence that human beings are a geological force that have altered lateral soil and sediment transfers globally well before the great acceleration in human activity post-World War II and before the start of the Industrial Revolution., Accelerated soil erosion has become a pervasive feature on landscapes around the world and is recognized to have substantial implications for land productivity, downstream water quality, and biogeochemical cycles. However, the scarcity of global syntheses that consider long-term processes has limited our understanding of the timing, the amplitude, and the extent of soil erosion over millennial time scales. As such, we lack the ability to make predictions about the responses of soil erosion to long-term climate and land cover changes. Here, we reconstruct sedimentation rates for 632 lakes based on chronologies constrained by 3,980 calibrated 14C ages to assess the relative changes in lake-watershed erosion rates over the last 12,000 y. Estimated soil erosion dynamics were then complemented with land cover reconstructions inferred from 43,669 pollen samples and with climate time series from the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model. Our results show that a significant portion of the Earth surface shifted to human-driven soil erosion rate already 4,000 y ago. In particular, inferred soil erosion rates increased in 35% of the watersheds, and most of these sites showed a decrease in the proportion of arboreal pollen, which would be expected with land clearance. Further analysis revealed that land cover change was the main driver of inferred soil erosion in 70% of all studied watersheds. This study suggests that soil erosion has been altering terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems for millennia, leading to carbon (C) losses that could have ultimately induced feedbacks on the climate system.

Fjords can transition from marine embayments to lacustrine waterbodies under glacio-isostatic change following their deglaciation. However, little is known on how a transition from fjord to lake is influenced by glacial dynamics and how it influences sedimentation in and around the basin. Here, we analyse swath bathymetry imagery and subbottom profiles pri in Lake Mekinac (southern Quebec) as well as glacial landforms from LiDAR imagery around the lake to document the evolution of a fjord basin into a lacustrine body during the transition from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene. These analyses helped refine local glacial history and show that the study area was probably under the up-ice reach of the St. Lawrence Ice Stream during full glacial conditions. The mapping of moraines in and around Lake Mekinac shows that deglaciation of the study area was marked by stabilization of the ice-margin during the Mars-Batiscan Event, which is traditionally correlated to the climate deterioration at the end of the Younger Dryas. The architecture of acoustic facies in the lake indicates a transition from glacial conditions (U1), to proglacial-paraglacial (U2) and to postglacial conditions (U3). The bottom of Lake Mekinac also contains multiple mass movement deposits related to progradation of the Du-Milieu River delta and probably to late-Holocene earthquakes. The acoustic architecture of sediments within the lake indicates that the sedimentation regime was most dependant on the sediment input regime and that the transition from fjord to lake did not significantly influence sedimentation during deglaciation of the watershed. Further work on dating the mass movement deposits that characterise the sediment architecture should provide a better assessment of natural hazard associated with seismological events.

Disturbed lacustrine deposits of eastern Canada have been associated with past seismic events in the intraplate Western Quebec Seismic Zone (WQZ) and the Charlevoix–Kamouraska Seismic Zone (CKSZ). With five major earthquakes that occurred during historical times and hundreds of minor earthquakes, the CKSZ is the most active seismic zone in eastern Canada. Here we present new high-resolution multibeam bathymetric, subbottom profiler and sediment core data collected in Lake Temiscouata, southeastern Quebec, the largest lake located within the influence of the CKSZ. The occurrence of mass-movements in the highly cohesive glaciolacustrine deposits of the lake produced a peculiar lacustrine landscape consisting of steep slide scars and residual mounds and very narrow residual crests. Our data indicate that postglacial times were marked by recurrent seismically-induced mass-movement events that cannot be individually identified in the sedimentary record due to the highly disturbed stratigraphy of the lake and to the absence of significant postglacial background sediments between events. The most recent recorded mass-movement is a distinct debris flow sediment layer on the lake floor that was deposited at ~ 1300 cal BP, very shortly after a distinct large-scale mass-movement event observed across the entire lake basin. The presence of silt layers in gyttja overlying these disturbed units suggests that the region was affected by other seismic events following this event, although no MMDs could be directly related to these layers.

High-resolution swath bathymetry data collected in fjord-lakes Pentecote, Walker and Pasteur (eastern Quebec, Canada) allowed imaging in great detail the deltas of four rivers in order to understand the factors controlling the formation and downslope evolution of bedforms present on their slopes. The morphometry and morphology of 199 bedforms reflect the behaviour of sediment density flows. The shape of the bedforms, mostly crescentic, and the relationships between their morphological properties indicate that they were formed by supercritical density flows and that they are cyclic steps. The crescentic shape suggests an upslope migration while the aspect ratios and increasing wavelengths with distance from the shore (and decreasing slopes) are compatible with a cyclic step origin. At the rollover point, the acceleration of the density flows on steep slopes produces tightly spaced hydraulic jumps and favours short wavelength and symmetrical bedforms. Further downslope, decreasing slopes and increasing specific discharge increase the wavelength and asymmetry of the bedforms. The wavelength and asymmetry are increased because density flows require longer distances to become supercritical again on lower slopes after each successive hydraulic jump. Bedform morphometry and morphology are used to reconstruct density flow behaviour downslope. Froude numbers are high near the rollover point and gradually decrease downslope as the slope becomes gentler. Conversely, the specific discharge and flow depth are low near the rollover point and gradually increase downslope as the flow either erodes sediments or becomes more dilute due to sediment deposition and water entrainment. The supercritical density flows are believed to be triggered mainly by hyperpycnal flows but some evidence of delta-front slope failures is also observed. The differences in delta morphology and bedform development between the four deltas are linked to basin morphology and watershed hydrology, but also mainly to the fjord heritage of the lakes that allowed the focusing of sediment at the delta front.
