This paper introduces the class of cooperative games with generalized coalition configuration. This new class of games corresponds to cooperative games with coalition configuration and restricted cooperation. A coalition configuration is a collection of coalitions covering the agent set. The restriction of cooperation between agents is represented by a set system on each element of the coalition configuration. A coalition profile is a list of feasible coalitions, one for each element of the coalition configuration. A coalition profile function associates a worth with each coalition profile. Based on this framework, we define and axiomatically characterize marginal values whose coefficients induce a unitary flow on the product digraph obtained from these set systems. Next, we propose a two-step procedure, inspired by Owen's procedure, to construct flow methods as above. Then, we show that the associated flow is decomposable into two flows. Finally, we use two axioms to characterize the flows that can be decomposed in this way, and hence the flow methods constructed using our procedure.

The theory of interfacial properties in liquid-liquid or liquid-vapour systems is nearly 200 years old. The advent of computational tools has greatly advanced the field, mainly through the use of Molecular Dynamics simulations. Despite the successes and advances in the theory of interfacial phenomena for liquid-liquid systems, the study of solid-liquid interfaces remains a challenge both theoretically and experimentally. The main reason why the treatment of solid-liquid systems has fallen behind that of liquid-liquid systems is that there are complications that arise whenever an interface involving solid systems is considered involving both theory of the solid-liquid interface and the calculations using MD simulations. An example of the former is that, contrary to the liquid-liquid case, the interfacial properties of solids depend on the lattice orientation. The main complications in these calculations arise from the fact that for solids the ``mechanical route'' cannot be used. To overcome this problem, several numerical approaches were proposed. The main purpose of this review is to provide an overview of these different methodologies and to discuss their strengths and weaknesses. We classify these methodologies into two main groups: direct and indirect methods. Direct methods are those that can calculate directly the properties of interfaces, while in indirect approaches the properties of the interface are not the primary result of the simulations. We also included a discussion on the origin of the difficulties in considering solid interfaces from a thermodynamic point of view. In the second part of the review, we discuss two key related topics: nucleation theory and curved interfaces. They both represent an important problem in the study of interfaces and in the context of solid-liquid ones for which the research is still extremely active., Comment: 111 pages, 14 figures

The advancement of the Event Horizon Telescope has enabled the study of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei down to sub-parsec linear scales even at high redshift. Quasi-simultaneous multifrequency observations provide insights into the physical conditions in compact regions and allow testing accretion theories. Initially we aimed at measuring the magnetic field strength close to the central supermassive black hole in NRAO 530 (1730-130) by studying frequency-dependent opacity of the jet matter, Faraday rotation and the spectral index in the mm-radio bands. NRAO 530 was observed quasi-simultaneously at 15, 22, 43, 86, and 227 GHz at four different very long baseline interferometer (VLBI) networks. By the means of imaging and model-fitting, we aligned the images, taken at different frequencies. We explored opacity along the jet and distribution of the linearly polarized emission in it. Our findings reveal that the jet of NRAO 530 at 86 and 227 GHz is transparent down to its origin, with 70 mJy emission detected at 227 GHz potentially originating from the accretion disk. The magnetic field strength near the black hole, estimated at $5r_\mathrm{g}$, is $3\times10^3-3\times10^4$ G (depending on the central black hole mass). These values represent some of the highest magnetic field strengths reported for active galaxies. We also report the first ever VLBI measurement of the Faraday rotation at 43-227 GHz, which reveals rotation measure values as high as -48000 rad/m2 consistent with higher particle density and stronger magnetic fields at the jet's outset. Interoperability is the key to implementing a wide range of energy systems applications. It involves the seamless cooperation of different methods and components. With smart energy systems, interoperability faces challenges due to integrating differ-ent approaches and technologies. This includes dealing with heterogeneous approaches with various communication proto-cols and data formats. However, it is essential for smart energy systems to carry out thorough interoperability tests. They are usually diverse, and challenging, thus requiring careful consideration of compatibility issues and complex integration scenari-os. Overcoming these challenges requires a systematic approach that includes thorough test planning, rigorous testing, and continuous test monitoring. Although numerous testing approaches exist, most are more developed at the component/device level than at the system level. Consequently, there are few approaches and related facilities to test the interoperability of smart energy approaches and solutions at the system level. The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. In this paper we determine the centers of quasi-homogeneous polynomial planar vector fields of degree 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4. We consider a class of three-dimensional systems having an equilibrium point at the origin, whose principal part is of the form (-Dy h(x, y), Dx h(x,y), f(x,y))^T . This principal part, which has zero divergence and does not depend on the third variable z, is the coupling of a planar Hamiltonian vector field Xh(x,y)=(-Dy h(x, y), Dx h(x,y))^T with a one-dimensional system. We analyze the quasi-homogeneous orbital normal forms for this kind of systems, by introducing a new splitting for quasi-homogeneous three-dimensional vector fields. The obtained results are applied to the nondegenerate Hopf-zero singularity that falls into this kind of systems. Beyond the Hopf-zero normal form, a parametric normal form is obtained, and the analytic expressions for the normal form coefficients are provided. Westudy the existence of a class of inverse integrating factor for a family of non formally integrable systems, in general, whose lowest-degree quasi-homogeneous term is a Hamiltonian vector field. Once the existence of an inverse integrat ing factor is established, we characterize the systems having a center. Among others, we characterize the centers of the systems whose lowest-degree quasiho mogeneous term is (-y3,x3)T with an algebraic inverse integrating factor. We investigate the effect of pressure on the carbon dioxide (CO$_{2}$) hydrate-water interfacial free energy along its dissociation line using advanced computer simulation techniques. In previous works, we have determined the interfacial energy of the hydrate at $400 \,\text{bar}$ using the TIP4P/ice and TraPPE molecular models for water and CO$_{2}$, respectively, in combination with two different extensions of the Mold Integration technique [J. Chem. Phys. 141, 134709 (2014)]. Results obtained from computer simulation, $29(2)$ and $30(2)\,\text{mJ/m}^{2}$, are found to be in excellent agreement with the only two measurements that exist in the literature, $28(6)\,\text{mJ/m}^{2}$ determined by Uchida et al. [J. Phys. Chem. B 106, 8202 (2002)] and $30(3)\,\text{mJ/m}^{2}$ by Anderson et al. [J. Phys. Chem. B 107, 3507 (2002)]. Since the experiments do not allow to obtain the variation of the interfacial energy along the dissociation line of the hydrate, we extend our previous studies to quantify the effect of pressure on the interfacial energy at different pressures. Our results suggest that there exists a correlation between the interfacial free energy values and the pressure, i.e., it decreases with the pressure between $100$ and $1000\,\text{bar}$. We expect that the combination of reliable molecular models and advanced simulation techniques could help to improve our knowledge of the thermodynamic parameters that control the interfacial free energy of hydrates from a molecular perspective., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, the solubility of carbon dioxide (CO$_{2}$) in water along the isobar of 400 bar is determined by computer simulations using the well-known TIP4P/Ice force field for water and TraPPE model for CO$_{2}$. In particular, the solubility of CO$_{2}$ in water when in contact with the CO$_{2}$ liquid phase, and the solubility of CO$_{2}$ in water when in contact with the hydrate have been determined. The solubility of CO$_{2}$ in a liquid-liquid system decreases as temperature increases. The solubility of CO$_{2}$ in a hydrate-liquid system increases with temperature. The two curves intersect at a certain temperature that determines the dissociation temperature of the hydrate at 400 bar ($T_{3}$). We compare the predictions with the $T_{3}$ obtained using the direct coexistence technique in a previous work. The results of both methods agree and we suggest 290(2)K as the value of $T_{3}$ for this system using the same cutoff distance for dispersive interactions. We also propose a novel and alternative route to evaluate the change in chemical potential for the formation of hydrate along the isobar. The new approach is based on the use of the solubility curve of CO$_{2}$ when the aqueous solution is in contact with the hydrate phase. It considers rigorously the non-ideality of the aqueous solution of CO$_{2}$, providing reliable values for driving force for nucleation of hydrates in good agreement with other thermodynamic routes used. It is shown that the driving force for hydrate nucleation at 400 bar is larger for the methane hydrate than for the carbon dioxide hydrate when compared at the same supercooling. Averaged local bond order parameters based on spherical harmonics, also known as Lechner and Dellago order parameters, are routinely used to determine crystal structures in molecular simulations. Among different options, the combination of the $\overline{q}_{4}$ and $\overline{q}_{6}$ parameters is one of the best choices in the literature since allows one to distinguish, not only between solid- and liquid-like particles but also between different crystallographic phases, including cubic and hexagonal phases. Recently, Algaba et al. [J. Colloid Interface Sci. 623, 354, (2022)] have used the Lechner and Dellago order parameters to distinguish hydrate- and liquid-like water molecules in the context of determining the carbon dioxide hydrate-water interfacial free energy. According to the results, the preferred combination previously mentioned is not the best option to differentiate between hydrate- and liquid-like water molecules. In this work, we revisit and extend the use of these parameters to deal with systems in which clathrate hydrates phases coexist with liquid phases of water. We consider carbon dioxide, methane, tetrahydrofuran, nitrogen, and hydrogen hydrates that exhibit sI and sII crystallographic structures. We find that the $\overline{q}_{3}$ and $\overline{q}_{12}$ combination is the best option possible between a large number of possible different pairs to distinguish between hydrate- and liquid-like water molecules in all cases., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

In this work, we determine the dissociation line of the nitrogen (N$_2$) hydrate by computer simulation using the TIP4P/Ice model for water and the TraPPE force field for N$_2$. We use the solubility method proposed recently by some of us to evaluate the dissociation temperature of the hydrate at different pressures, from 500 to 1500 bar. Particularly, we calculate the solubility of N$_2$ in the aqueous solution when it is in contact with a N$_2$-rich liquid phase and when in contact with the hydrate phase via planar interfaces as functions of temperature. Since the solubility of N$_2$ decreases with temperature in the first case and increases with temperature in the second case, both curves intersect at a certain temperature that determines the dissociation temperature at a given pressure. We find a good agreement between the predictions obtained in this work and the experimental data taken from the literature in the range of pressures considered in this work. From our knowledge of the solubility curves of N$_2$ in the aqueous solution, we also determine the driving force for nucleation of the hydrate, as a function of temperature, at different pressures. In particular, we use two different thermodynamic routes to evaluate the change in chemical potential for hydrate formation. Although the driving force for nucleation slightly decreases (in absolute value) when the pressure is increased, our results indicate that the effect of pressure can be considered negligible in the range of pressures studied in this work. In this work, the tetrahydrofuran (THF) hydrate-water interfacial free energy is determined at $500\,\text{bar}$, at one point of the univariant two-phase coexistence line of the THF hydrate, by molecular dynamics simulation. The Mold Integration-Host methodology, an extension of the original Mold Integration technique to deal with hydrate-fluid interfaces, is used to calculate the interfacial energy. Water is described using the well-known TIP4P/Ice model and THF is described using a rigid version of the TraPPE model. We have recently used the combination of these two models to accurately describe the univariant two-phase dissociation line of the THF hydrate, in a wide range of pressures, from computer simulation [J. Chem. Phys. 160, 164718 (2024)]. The THF hydrate-water interfacial free energy predicted in this work is compared with the only experimental data available in the literature. The value obtained, $27(2)\,\text{mJ/m}^{2}$, is in excellent agreement with the experimental data taken from the literature, $24(8)\,\text{mJ/m}^{2}$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the THF hydrate-water interfacial free energy is predicted from computer simulation. Quantum computing has tremendous potential to overcome some of the fundamental limitations present in classical information processing. Yet, today's technological limitations in the quality and scaling prevent exploiting its full potential. Quantum computing based on superconducting quantum processing units (QPUs) is among the most promising approaches towards practical quantum advantage. In this article the basic technological approach of IQM Quantum Computers is described covering both the QPU and the rest of the full-stack quantum computer. In particular, the focus is on a 20-qubit quantum computer featuring the Garnet QPU and its architecture, which we will scale up to 150 qubits. We also present QPU and system-level benchmarks, including a median 2-qubit gate fidelity of 99.5% and genuinely entangling all 20 qubits in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state.

In this work, we determine the dissociation line of the nitrogen (N$_{2}$) hydrate by computer simulation using the TIP4P/Ice model for water and the TraPPE force field for N$_{2}$. This work is the natural extension of our previous paper in which the dissociation temperature of the N$_2$ hydrate has been obtained at $500$, $1000$, and $1500\,\text{bar}$ [\emph{J. Chem. Phys.} \textbf{159}, 224707 (2023)] using the solubility method and assuming single occupancy. We extend our previous study and determine the dissociation temperature of the N$_2$ hydrate at different pressures, from $500$ to $4500\,\text{bar}$, taking into account single and double occupancy of the N$_{2}$ molecules in the hydrate structure. We calculate the solubility of N$_2$ in the aqueous solution, as a function of temperature, when it is in contact with a N$_{2}$-rich liquid phase and when in contact with the hydrate phase with single and double occupancy via planar interfaces. Both curves intersect at a certain temperature that determines the dissociation temperature at a given pressure. We observe a negligible effect of the occupancy on the dissociation temperature. Our findings are in very good agreement with the experimental data taken from the literature. We have also obtained the driving force for nucleation of the hydrate as a function of the temperature and occupancy at several pressures. As in the case of the dissociation line, the effect of the occupancy on the driving force for nucleation is negligible. Clathrate hydrates are vital in energy research and environmental applications. Understanding their stability is crucial for harnessing their potential. In this work, we employ direct coexistence simulations to study finite-size effects in the determination of the three-phase equilibrium temperature ($T_3$) for methane hydrates. Two popular water models, TIP4P/Ice and TIP4P/2005, are employed, exploring various system sizes by varying the number of molecules in the hydrate, liquid, and gas phases. The results reveal that finite-size effects play a crucial role in determining $T_3$. The study includes nine configurations with varying system sizes, demonstrating that smaller systems, particularly those leading to stoichiometric conditions and bubble formation, may yield inaccurate $T_3$ values. The emergence of methane bubbles within the liquid phase, observed in smaller configurations, significantly influences the behavior of the system and can lead to erroneous temperature estimations. Our findings reveal finite size effects on the calculation of the $T_3$ by direct coexistence simulations and clarify the system size convergence for both models, shedding light on discrepancies found in the literature. The results contribute to a deeper understanding of the phase equilibrium of gas hydrates and offer valuable information for future research in this field., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

In this work, the effects of finite size on the determination of the three-phase coexistence temperature ($T_3$) of carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) hydrate have been studied by molecular dynamic simulations and using the direct coexistence technique. According to this technique, the three phases involved are placed together in the same simulation box. By varying the number of molecules of each phase it is possible to analyze the effect of simulation size and stoichiometry on the $T_3$ determination. In this work, we have determined the $T_3$ value at 8 different pressures and using 6 different simulation boxes with different numbers of molecules and sizes. In 2 of these configurations, the ratio of the number of water and CO$_2$ molecules in the aqueous solution and the liquid CO$_2$ phase is the same as in the hydrate (stoichiometric configuration). In both stoichiometric configurations, the formation of a liquid drop of CO$_2$ in the aqueous phase is observed. This drop, which has a cylindrical geometry, increases the amount of CO$_2$ available in the aqueous solution and can in some cases lead to the crystallization of the hydrate at temperatures above $T_3$, overestimating the $T_3$ value obtained from direct coexistence simulations. The simulation results obtained for the CO$_{2}$ hydrate confirm the sensitivity of $T_{3}$ depending on the size and composition of the system, explaining the discrepancies observed in the original work by M\'iguez \emph{et al.} Non-stoichiometric configurations with larger unit cells show convergence of $T_{3}$ values, suggesting that finite-size effects for these system sizes, regardless of drop formation, can be safely neglected. In this work, the effect of the range of the dispersive interactions in the determination of the three-phase coexistence line of the CO$_2$ and CH$_4$ hydrates has been studied. In particular, the temperature ($T_3$) at which solid hydrate, water, and liquid CO$_2$/gas CH$_4$ coexist has been determined through molecular dynamics simulations using different cut-off values (from 0.9 to 1.6 nm) for the dispersive interactions. The $T_3$ of both hydrates has been determined using the direct coexistence simulation technique. Following this method, the three phases in equilibrium are put together in the same simulation box, the pressure is fixed, and simulations are performed at different temperatures $T$. Citation practices are crucial in shaping the structure of scientific knowledge, yet they are often influenced by contemporary norms and biases. The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) introduces a new dynamic to these practices. Interestingly, the characteristics and potential biases of references recommended by LLMs that entirely rely on their parametric knowledge, and not on search or retrieval-augmented generation, remain unexplored. Here, we analyze these characteristics in an experiment using a dataset from AAAI, NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR, published after GPT-4's knowledge cut-off date. In our experiment, LLMs are tasked with suggesting scholarly references for the anonymized in-text citations within these papers. Our findings reveal a remarkable similarity between human and LLM citation patterns, but with a more pronounced high citation bias, which persists even after controlling for publication year, title length, number of authors, and venue. The results hold for both GPT-4, and the more capable models GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 where the papers are part of the training data. Additionally, we observe a large consistency between the characteristics of LLM's existing and non-existent generated references, indicating the model's internalization of citation patterns. By analyzing citation graphs, we show that the references recommended are embedded in the relevant citation context, suggesting an even deeper conceptual internalization of the citation networks. While LLMs can aid in citation generation, they may also amplify existing biases, such as the Matthew effect, and introduce new ones, potentially skewing scientific knowledge dissemination., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. In this work, the univariant two-phase coexistence line of the hydrate of tetrahydrofuran (THF) is determined from 100 to 1000 bar by molecular dynamics simulations. The study is carried out by putting in contact a THF hydrate phase with a stoichiometric aqueous solution phase. Following the direct coexistence technique, the pressure has been fixed, and the coexistence line has been determined by analyzing if the hydrate phase grows or melts at different values of temperature. The model of water used is the well-known TIP4P/Ice model. We have used two different models of THF based on the transferable parameters for phase equilibria-united atom approach (TraPPE-UA), the original (flexible) TraPPe-UA model as well as a rigid and planar version of it. Overall, at high pressures, small differences have been observed in the results obtained by both models. Also, large differences have been observed in the computational efforts required by the simulations performed using both models, being the rigid and planar version much faster than the original one. The effect of the unlike dispersive interactions between the water and THF molecules has been also analyzed at 250 bar using the rigid and planar THF model. In particular, we have modified the Berthelot combining rule by adding a factor ({\xi}O-THF) that modifies the unlike water-THF dispersive interactions and we have analyzed the effect on the dissociation temperature when {\xi}O-THF is modified from 1.0 (original Berthelot combining rule) to 1.4 (modified Berthelot combining rule). We have extended the study using {\xi}O-THF = 1.4 and the rigid THF model to the rest of the pressures considered in this work, finding an excellent agreement with the scarce experimental data taken from the literature., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The nearby elliptical galaxy M87 contains one of the only two supermassive black holes whose emission surrounding the event horizon has been imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In 2018, more than two dozen multi-wavelength (MWL) facilities (from radio to gamma-ray energies) took part in the second M87 EHT campaign. The goal of this extensive MWL campaign was to better understand the physics of the accreting black hole M87*, the relationship between the inflow and inner jets, and the high-energy particle acceleration. Understanding the complex astrophysics is also a necessary first step towards performing further tests of general relativity. The MWL campaign took place in April 2018, overlapping with the EHT M87* observations. We present a new, contemporaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) ranging from radio to very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays, as well as details of the individual observations and light curves. We also conduct phenomenological modelling to investigate the basic source properties. We present the first VHE gamma-ray flare from M87 detected since 2010. The flux above 350 GeV has more than doubled within a period of about 36 hours. We find that the X-ray flux is enhanced by about a factor of two compared to 2017, while the radio and millimetre core fluxes are consistent between 2017 and 2018. We detect evidence for a monotonically increasing jet position angle that corresponds to variations in the bright spot of the EHT image. Our results show the value of continued MWL monitoring together with precision imaging for addressing the origins of high-energy particle acceleration. While we cannot currently pinpoint the precise location where such acceleration takes place, the new VHE gamma-ray flare already presents a challenge to simple one-zone leptonic emission model approaches, and emphasises the need for combined image and spectral modelling., Comment: 46 pages, 23 figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics on August. 29, 2024

We present the results of a spectral analysis using simultaneous multifrequency (22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz) very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) on BL Lac object, Markarian 421 (Mrk 421). The data we used was obtained from January 2013 to June 2018. The light curves showed several flux enhancements with global decreases. To separate the variable and quiescent components in the multifrequency light curves for milliarcsecond-scale emission regions, we assumed that the quiescent radiation comes from the emission regions radiating constant optically-thin synchrotron emissions (i.e., a minimum flux density with an optically thin spectral index). The quiescent spectrum determined from the multifrequency light curves was subtracted from the total CLEAN flux density, yielding a variable component in the flux that produces the time-dependent spectrum. We found that the observed spectra were flat at 22-43 GHz, and relatively steep at 43-86 GHz, whereas the quiescent-corrected spectra are sometimes quite different from the observed spectra (e.g., sometimes inverted at 22-43 GHz ). The quiescent-corrected spectral indices were much more variable than the observed spectral indices. This spectral investigation implies that the quiescent-spectrum correction can significantly affect the multifrequency spectral index of variable compact radio sources such as blazars. Park et al. [1] reported a decline in the disruptiveness of scientific and technological knowledge over time. Their main finding is based on the computation of CD indices, a measure of disruption in citation networks [2], across almost 45 million papers and 3.9 million patents. Due to a factual plotting mistake, database entries with zero references were omitted in the CD index distributions, hiding a large number of outliers with a maximum CD index of one, while keeping them in the analysis [1]. Our reanalysis shows that the reported decline in disruptiveness can be attributed to a relative decline of these database entries with zero references. Notably, this was not caught by the robustness checks included in the manuscript. The regression adjustment fails to control for the hidden outliers as they correspond to a discontinuity in the CD index. Proper evaluation of the Monte-Carlo simulations reveals that, because of the preservation of the hidden outliers, even random citation behaviour replicates the observed decline in disruptiveness. 3C84 is a nearby radio source with a complex total intensity structure, showing linear polarisation and spectral patterns. A detailed investigation of the central engine region necessitates the use of VLBI above the hitherto available maximum frequency of 86GHz. Using ultrahigh resolution VLBI observations at the highest available frequency of 228GHz, we aim to directly detect compact structures and understand the physical conditions in the compact region of 3C84. We used EHT 228GHz observations and, given the limited (u,v)-coverage, applied geometric model fitting to the data. We also employed quasi-simultaneously observed, multi-frequency VLBI data for the source in order to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the core structure. We report the detection of a highly ordered, strong magnetic field around the central, SMBH of 3C84. The brightness temperature analysis suggests that the system is in equipartition. We determined a turnover frequency of $\nu_m=(113\pm4)$GHz, a corresponding synchrotron self-absorbed magnetic field of $B_{SSA}=(2.9\pm1.6)$G, and an equipartition magnetic field of $B_{eq}=(5.2\pm0.6)$G. Three components are resolved with the highest fractional polarisation detected for this object ($m_\textrm{net}=(17.0\pm3.9)$%). The positions of the components are compatible with those seen in low-frequency VLBI observations since 2017-2018. We report a steeply negative slope of the spectrum at 228GHz. We used these findings to test models of jet formation, propagation, and Faraday rotation in 3C84. The findings of our investigation into different flow geometries and black hole spins support an advection-dominated accretion flow in a magnetically arrested state around a rapidly rotating supermassive black hole as a model of the jet-launching system in the core of 3C84. The nearby radio galaxy M87 offers a unique opportunity to explore the connections between the central supermassive black hole and relativistic jets. Previous studies of the inner region of M87 revealed a wide opening angle for the jet originating near the black hole. The Event Horizon Telescope resolved the central radio source and found an asymmetric ring structure consistent with expectations from General Relativity. With a baseline of 17 years of observations, there was a shift in the jet's transverse position, possibly arising from an eight to ten-year quasi-periodicity. However, the origin of this sideways shift remains unclear. Here we report an analysis of radio observations over 22 years that suggests a period of about 11 years in the position angle variation of the jet. We infer that we are seeing a spinning black hole that induces the Lense-Thirring precession of a misaligned accretion disk. Similar jet precession may commonly occur in other active galactic nuclei but has been challenging to detect owing to the small magnitude and long period of the variation., Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed in 2017 the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ($\lambda$=1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT datasets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars - which typically exhibit steep emission spectra - are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic Center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most-sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the Fast-Folding-Algorithm and single pulse search targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission; using the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction ($\lesssim$2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, 6 Tables. Most group fairness notions detect unethical biases by computing statistical parity metrics on a model's output. However, this approach suffers from several shortcomings, such as philosophical disagreement, mutual incompatibility, and lack of interpretability. These shortcomings have spurred the research on complementary bias detection methods that offer additional transparency into the sources of discrimination and are agnostic towards an a priori decision on the definition of fairness and choice of protected features. A recent proposal in this direction is LUCID (Locating Unfairness through Canonical Inverse Design), where canonical sets are generated by performing gradient descent on the input space, revealing a model's desired input given a preferred output. This information about the model's mechanisms, i.e., which feature values are essential to obtain specific outputs, allows exposing potential unethical biases in its internal logic. Here, we present LUCID-GAN, which generates canonical inputs via a conditional generative model instead of gradient-based inverse design. LUCID-GAN has several benefits, including that it applies to non-differentiable models, ensures that canonical sets consist of realistic inputs, and allows to assess proxy and intersectional discrimination. Digital-Analog Quantum Computation (DAQC) has recently been proposed as an alternative to the standard paradigm of digital quantum computation. DAQC creates entanglement through a continuous or analog evolution of the whole device, rather than by applying two-qubit gates. This manuscript describes an in-depth analysis of DAQC by extending its implementation to arbitrary connectivities and by performing the first systematic study of its scaling properties. The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation^{1,2}. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole^3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of 8.4_{-1.1}^{+0.5} Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer edge at 3.5 mm is also larger than that at 1.3 mm. This larger and thicker ring indicates a substantial contribution from the accretion flow with absorption effects in addition to the gravitationally lensed ring-like emission. The images show that the edge-brightened jet connects to the accretion flow of the black hole. Close to the black hole, the emission profile of the jet-launching region is wider than the expected profile of a black-hole-driven jet, suggesting the possible presence of a wind associated with the accretion flow., Comment: 50 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables, author's version of the paper published in Nature

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I, Q, U , and V respectively. We show how to efficiently decompose a parameterized multi-qubit Pauli (PMQP) gate into native parameterized two-qubit Pauli (P2QP) gates minimizing both the circuit depth and the number of P2QP gates. Given a realistic quantum computational model, we argue that the technique is optimal in terms of the number of hardware native gates and the overall depth of the decomposition. Starting from PMQP gate decompositions for the path and star hardware graph, we generalize the procedure to any generic hardware graph and provide exact expressions for the depth and number of P2QP gates of the decomposition. Furthermore, we show how to efficiently combine the decomposition of multiple PMQP gates to further reduce the depth as well as the number of P2QP gates for a combinatorial optimization problem using the Lechner-Hauke-Zoller (LHZ) mapping., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

In this work, we studied the Galactic Center supermassive black hole (SMBH), Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), with the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA)/East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) monitoring observations. Especially on 13 May 2019, Sgr A* experienced an unprecedented bright near infra-red (NIR) flare; so, we find a possible counterpart at 43 GHz (7 mm). As a result, a large temporal variation of the flux density at the level 15.4%, with the highest flux density of 2.04 Jy, is found on 11 May 2019. Interestingly, the intrinsic sizes are also variable, and the area and major-axis size show a marginal correlation with flux density with >2{\sigma}. Thus, we interpret that the emission region at 43 GHz follows the larger-when-brighter relation in 2019. Because of its proximity and the large size of its black hole, M87 is one of the best targets for studying the launching mechanism of active galactic nucleus jets. Currently, magnetic fields are considered to be an essential factor in the launching and accelerating of the jet. However, current observational estimates of the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet are limited to the innermost part of the jet or to HST-1. No attempt has yet been made to measure the magnetic field strength in between. We aim to infer the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet out to a distance of several thousand $r_s$ by tracking the distance-dependent changes in the synchrotron spectrum of the jet from high-resolution very long baseline interferometry observations. In order to obtain high-quality spectral index maps, quasi-simultaneous observations at 22 and 43 GHz were conducted using the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) and the VLBA. We compared the spectral index distributions obtained from the observations with a model and placed limits on the magnetic field strengths as a function of distance. The overall spectral morphology is broadly consistent over the course of these observations. The observed synchrotron spectrum rapidly steepens from $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -0.7 at ~ 2 mas to $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -2.5 at ~ 6 mas. A spectral index model in which nonthermal electron injections inside the jet decrease with distance can adequately reproduce the observed trend. This suggests the magnetic field strength of the jet at a distance of 2 - 10 mas (~ 900 $r_s$ - ~ 4500 $r_s$ in the deprojected distance) has a range of $B=(0.3 - 1.0 G)(z/2 mas)^{-0.73}$. Extrapolating to the EHT scale yields consistent results, suggesting that the majority of the magnetic flux of the jet near the black hole is preserved out to ~ 4500 $r_s$ without significant dissipation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. We report on the observations of the quasar NRAO 530 with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) on 2017 April 5-7, when NRAO 530 was used as a calibrator for the EHT observations of Sagittarius A*. At z=0.902 this is the most distant object imaged by the EHT so far. We reconstruct the first images of the source at 230 GHz, at an unprecedented angular resolution of $\sim$ 20 $\mu$as, both in total intensity and in linear polarization. We do not detect source variability, allowing us to represent the whole data set with static images. The images reveal a bright feature located on the southern end of the jet, which we associate with the core. The feature is linearly polarized, with a fractional polarization of $\sim$5-8% and has a sub-structure consisting of two components. Their observed brightness temperature suggests that the energy density of the jet is dominated by the magnetic field. The jet extends over 60 $\mu$as along a position angle PA$\sim -$28$^\circ$. It includes two features with orthogonal directions of polarization (electric vector position angle, EVPA), parallel and perpendicular to the jet axis, consistent with a helical structure of the magnetic field in the jet. The outermost feature has a particularly high degree of linear polarization, suggestive of a nearly uniform magnetic field. Future EHT observations will probe the variability of the jet structure on ${\mu}$as scales, while simultaneous multi-wavelength monitoring will provide insight into the high energy emission origin.

We present a general strategy for mapping fermionic systems to quantum hardware with square qubit connectivity which yields low-depth quantum circuits, counted in the number of native two-qubit fSIM gates. We achieve this by leveraging novel operator decomposition and circuit compression techniques paired with specifically chosen low-depth fermion-to-qubit mappings and allow for a high degree of gate cancellations and parallelism. Our mappings retain the flexibility to simultaneously optimize for qubit counts or qubit operator weights and can be used to investigate arbitrary fermionic lattice geometries. We showcase our approach by investigating the tight-binding model, the Fermi-Hubbard model as well as the multi-orbital Hubbard-Kanamori model. We report unprecedentedly low circuit depths per single Trotter layer with up to a $70 \%$ improvement upon previous state-of-the-art. Our compression technique also results in significant reduction of two-qubit gates. We find the lowest gate-counts when applying the XYZ-formalism to the DK mapping. Additionally, we show that our decomposition and compression formalism produces favourable circuits even when no native parameterized two-qubit gates are available.

The East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) is an international VLBI facility in East Asia and is operated under mutual collaboration between East Asian countries, as well as part of Southeast Asian and European countries. EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 hours in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. The magnetic field is believed to play a critical role in the bulk acceleration and propagation of jets produced in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Polarization observations of AGN jets provide valuable information about their magnetic fields. As a result of radiative transfer, jet structure, and stratification, among other factors, it is not always straightforward to determine the magnetic field structures from observed polarization. We review these effects and their impact on polarization emission at a variety of wavelengths, including radio, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths in this paper. It is also possible to study the magnetic field in the launching and acceleration regions of AGN jets by using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), which occurs on a small physical scale. Due to the weak polarization of the jets in these regions, probing the magnetic field is generally difficult. However, recent VLBI observations have detected significant polarization and Faraday rotation in some nearby sources. We present the results of these observations as well as prospects for future observations. Additionally, we briefly discuss recently developed polarization calibration and imaging techniques for VLBI data, which enable more in-depth analysis of the magnetic field structure around supermassive black holes and in AGN jets., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures.
