Motorhoming consists of a way of travelling in vehicles that incorporate a living space. These vehicles usually include a sleeping area, a kitchen, a dining area and, in some cases, a bathroom and shower. People who travel in motorhomes choose a type of tourism that does not rely on traditional touristic infrastructures. They sleep in their own beds, cook their own food and can be self-sufficient and independent for several days without interacting with the rest of society. The main objective of this article is to propose a typology of European motorhome travellers, taking the Algarve region (in southern Portugal) as a case study. Previous investigations conducted in other regions of the world have proposed some typologies of motorhome travellers, but the sociocultural contexts where they were elaborated are very different from the European reality, namely from the studied region. Contrasting with the previous typologies, which used only one or two characteristics of the motorhomers, the proposed typology combines their objective attributes with their subjective discourses about the trip. The three resulting types were designated as 'enjoyers', 'seekers' and 'vacationers'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Located along the southern limit of the Algarvensis aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark (aUGGp), the Escarpão Plateau is a singular geomorphological structure sculpted by fluvial, karst, and tectonic processes. The plateau is deeply scarved by the Quarteira Rivulet, forming a valley that crosses the most complete Upper Jurassic sedimentary sequence of the Eastern Algarve (Southern Portugal). This sequence includes five geological formations representing different depths of carbonate ramp deposition from the Tethys Sea: Peral Formation, Jordana Formation, Cerro da Cabeça Formation, Escarpão Formation, and the upper Limestone Formation with Anchispirocyclina lusitanica (foraminifera), respectively from the oldest formation to the most recent at the top. Throughout the Quaternary Period, the karst processes shaped a landscape of sparse and poor soils, based on which successive generations adapted their subsistence agriculture and way of life. The geomorphology of the plateau and the rivulet valley, the sequence of the carbonated formations, and the diversity of sedimentary and paleontological records can be considered possible sites of diverse geological interest and with different scales that are embedded in each other, forming thus nested sites. To promote and preserve these sites, the Algarvensis aUGGp shaped an 8-km-long interpretative walking path, passing through 11 points of interest, including biosites and geosites. Their interpretative boards highlight not only the different spatial and temporal geological diversity but also its relationship with surrounding cultural and historical heritage. Finally, this work allowed the creation of new products for outreach and public awareness towards an effective geoconservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the experiences of Dutch B&B and short-term rental property owners in the rural Algarve, Portugal, as a case study on the economic and social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for entrepreneurial lifestyle migrants. The empirical data comes from twelve in-depth interviews with Dutch lifestyle migrants who moved to and settled in the more rural areas of the eastern Algarve and started small tourism accommodation businesses. Specifically, we look at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting measures and restrictions on the economic situation of the businesses, the health and wellbeing of the business owners and their guests, as well as their accounts of social solidarity and community support. The findings reveal that there were relatively few changes in the lifestyles of the respondents and that their businesses, whilst impacted by the dramatic effects of the pandemic on travel and tourism, remained afloat. The findings confirm both the relative privilege of lifestyle migrant entrepreneurs, and the unequal impacts of the global pandemic. Their resilience to disaster is positively connected to their embeddedness in different networks. Finally, the rural location of the properties was also found to be instrumental in facing the pandemic in several ways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the territorial reform in Portuguese parishes in 2013 following the bailout from the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission (Troika). The purpose of this paper is (i) to frame the reform of the parishes in Portugal in the trends of reorganization at the local level in European countries in recent decades; (ii) to situate the aggregation at the national scale, integrating it in the Reform of Local Administration of the XIX Government (2011-2015); (iii) to analyze, from the Algarve, the changes in the exercise of its powers, in the provision of services to the population and in the relationship with the municipality; (iv) to discuss the results achieved. The methodology is based on the literature review on local territorial reforms in European countries, on the critical reading of the national process, and the empirical approach is based on the perspective of the elected representatives, based on semi-structured interviews with all the mayors of the aggregated parish councils in the Algarve. The top-down aggregation process applied in the country triggered in the region a reaction of sharing and collaboration between parishes, reducing tensions and fractures between communities (but, in other situations, exposing old divisions or fractures). The new map is assimilated, but criticism remains and two reversals have already occurred.

YOUNG adults , *CITIES & towns , *TOURISM research , *LAND use , *TOURISM - Abstract
This article is part of a growing body of research on tourism in general and its insertion in tourist housing in particular. It hypothesises that tourism today follows the logic of the urbanism of previous decades and, likewise, is a way of taking advantage of the residential surplus. And it contains the objectives of seeing a method through the offer of detecting and delimiting the zones, as well as analysing a first outline of their impact on demography. For this purpose, a methodology based on the calculation of the clustering of tourist elements with general operations such as Moran's or Getis Ord Gi* and a multi-criteria evaluation based on a first level tourism region with a diversified offer such as the Algarve has been transferred. Subsequently, the analysis of growth and land use change and impacts by parish, the smallest scale in Portugal, is checked cartographically. The results show a dependence on the airport and the infrastructures that have grown in previous episodes, a difference between the sun and beach west and an east with a more urban-cultural tourism, and, above all, the importance of decisions on land changes that have determined the spaces. Finally, it has been shown how tourist housing is of vital importance in tourism and how it is taking young people and immigrants with a tendency to work away from the areas with the greatest supply of local accommodation. INSECT pests , *OLIVE , *TREE diseases & pests , *SCALE insects , *PEST control - Abstract
The presence of the South African Obscure Scale, Melanaspis corticosa (Brain) (Hemiptera, Diaspididae), was detected infesting olive trees, in Portugal. The identity of the scale insect was confirmed based on both morphological and molecular studies. Until now, this species was only known in a few African countries, including Guinea, Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe. This is the first record of this species in Europe and in the Palearctic region. The scale was observed in 15 different locations, in the Algarve, since its first detection at the end of 2016. Samples were collected between 21 December 2016 and 10 March 2022, covering all seasonal periods. Most of the sampling sites resulted from private requests from farmers and proprietaries received by the Plant Protection Division of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture. Although it is considered a polyphagous species, it was not observed in other plant species, besides olive trees. The actual dispersion in the region suggests that M. corticosa became established and has been expanded its distribution since its arrival. This scale insect is a potential injurious pest of olive trees and needs to be studied to clarify its pest status and develop effective pest management strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is focused on the use of photography to characterize land-cover and land-use changes in a 7.59 km
2 study area centered on Hotel do Garbe, in the village of Armação de Pêra, Algarve, Portugal. Orthorectified vertical aerial, oblique aerial and ground-level photographs were the main data sources required to carry out the analysis. In a preliminary approach, a conventional research design was adopted. Based on the available orthorectified vertical aerial photographs, a sixty-year time series, with four homogeneously distributed steps (1958, 1978, 1997 and 2018), was constructed, and maps were produced to support the description of the changes that have taken place. To deepen the analysis, photographs from fourteen picture postcards were recognized as a useful source of information, and the authors of these photographs were considered "involuntary or accidental photo-geographers" whose work was relevant to feed a case study in which human geography and landscape biography sciences are the main narrative axes. The final result proved to be richer than the interpretation only based on the orthorectified vertical aerial photographs, and the importance of combining photographs taken from different points of view, with different aims and for different recipients is highlighted. The Portuguese Poison Information Center (from Portuguese—CIAV) is a call center that offers medical assistance in case of possible intoxication with any kind of product, including medicines. This center´s main goal is to inform and guide the general public and health professionals. This work aimed to analyze and compare data corresponding to the telephone calls from the Algarve region (South of Portugal), received by CIAV during 2019 and 2020, regarding potential intoxications with medicines. To this end, data provided by CIAV on possible cases of medication intoxication in the Algarve region were collected, including the number of calls received, the place of origin of the call, the age group and sex of the intoxicated individual, the route of exposure to the drug, the circumstances of contact with the substance, the existence of symptoms, and the drug or drugs involved in the potential intoxication. The results showed that the number of cases slightly decreased in 2020 (n = 1261) compared with 2019 (n = 1340), with a high number of cases of intoxication in children between one and four years old in both years (21.2%; n = 152 in 2019; 16.4%; n = 115 in 2020). The drugs belonging to the locomotor system group (paracetamol and ibuprofen) were the main drugs involved, followed by the central nervous system pharmacotherapeutic group, namely benzodiazepines (diazepam and alprazolam). Paracetamol was the main drug responsible for the calls to CIAV (n = 71 in 2019; n = 63 in 2020), while for the remaining drugs there were fluctuations in their positions between both years. In some cases, this swinging may be explained by the possible changes in therapy due to potential interactions with drugs used for the treatment of symptoms of COVID-19 or perhaps related to misleading information released by the media about the use of some drugs, such as ibuprofen, during lockdown periods. Although there has been a decrease in calls to report possible drug intoxication in the Algarve region, the profile of calls was very similar. Paracetamol was the drug with the highest number of reported cases and the group of psychotropic drugs showed the largest increase between 2019 and 2020. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work addresses the problem of resident’s perceptions of tourism impacts and their perceptions of quality of life. Although there is a growing bank of tourism research available on these topics, specific tourism locations still need to be studied. The main goal of this research was to determine the tourism impacts in Faro, Algarve and whether links could be established between tourism impacts (positive and negative) and residents’ perceptions of quality of life, globally, and within four domains, namely: material domain, community domain, health and safety domain and emotional domain. A sample of 300 residents was used to collect data from Faro residents on their perceptions of tourism impacts in their location, as well as the residents’ perceptions of their quality of life in the four domains. The results indicate a correlation between perceptions about tourism impacts and residents’ perceptions of quality of life within the four domains and globally. These findings open the way for a more holistic understanding of the location’s tourism environment and the interplay of tourism and the residents of the tourist location. These findings are beneficial to residents, policy planners, governing bodies and tourism operators.

- Abstract
Sustainable tourism is a main priority of European Union policies, with the aim of mitigating the potential harmful consequences of this sector on a given territory. The main research goal of this article is to better understand the impact of the public investments financed via EU Cohesion Policy in the tourism sector in the Portuguese Algarve NUT2. This paper focuses on the Portuguese Operational Programme for Sustainability and Efficient Use of Resources (POSEUR 20142020), which was an operational programme of a Portuguese framework to implement EU Cohesion Policy funds in Portugal between 2014 and 2020, and was specifically focused on supporting sustainable development processes. The sustainability performance of POSEUR in the Algarve was evaluated in five different dimensions of analysis: (1) low-emissions economy, (2) adaptation to climate change, (3) risk prevention and management, (4) environmental protection, and (5) resource efficiency. The results showed that POSEUR had a low impact in almost all dimensions in the Algarve, apart from the adaptation to climate change dimension, which exhibits a high impact score, mostly due to the support given for carrying out the Plans for Adaptation to Climate Change (PAAC). Notes on various further taxa are provided as well as reflections on the origin of the orb web and the phylogeny of higher taxa of the superfamily Araneoidea: The apparently older cribellate orb web and the apparently younger ecribellate (araneoid) orb web are regarded to be of different origins; it is suggested that the webs evolved separately (convergently), and only a single time WITHIN the Araneoidea. The capture web of the Araneoidea is considered to be basically irregular (not an orb web), see fig. A p. 27. "Orbiculariae" is not considered to be a taxon but nothing else than a "descriptive term" of parts of the superfamilies Araneoidea and Deinopoidea. - Remarks are given regarding the splitting of the family Araneidae and on an erroneous Cretaceous report of the Nephilinae. - The unusual existence of hairs on the tegulum is reported in extant and fossil spider taxa of 5 families; see the family Fonteferridae n. fam. - A list is given to the remarkable small body size of several species of various families of the Algarve. - Due to the recently discovered rare and probably even endemic spider species of parts of the Algarve - valleys, sources small streams near Sao Bras de Alportel - are regarded as "hot spots" of spider endemism. The "relic" fauna of such areas is urgently needed for their protection - e. g., as national reserves -, to preserve animals of an almost vanished fauna. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the summer of 1965, several youths were arrested and publicly shamed by the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) in Lagos, on the Algarve, for the 'crime' of homosexuality. Despite the silence of official and press channels on the events, the arrests were analysed by two foreign sources, one a German police science journal and the other a British volume on homosexuality in society. What the sources reveal is that rather than public opprobrium against the youths, indignation was expressed at the GNR's actions. Sympathy for the young men was engendered in on-lookers in what this article terms an act of 'emotional rescue' and resistance against the norms, values and practices of the dictatorship. By means of the contextualization of the events as part of the rising tourist economy and recent queer theory, the article contributes an alternative understanding of LGBT history and resistance to authoritarian regimes.

This article is focused on the use of photography to characterize land-cover and land-use changes in a 7.59 km2 study area centered on Hotel do Garbe, in the village of Armação de Pêra, Algarve, Portugal. To deepen the analysis, photographs from fourteen picture postcards were recognized as a useful source of information, and the authors of these photographs were considered “involuntary or accidental photo-geographers” whose work was relevant to feed a case study in which human geography and landscape biography sciences are the main narrative axes.

PLACE attachment (Psychology) ,LAGOONS ,FISHING ,RESEARCH parks ,RESTAURANT personnel ,FISHING villages - Abstract
The main objective of this article is to understand the relationship that the residents of Fuzeta, a fishing village in southern Portugal, establish with the Ria Formosa Natural Park, through the concept of place attachment. Recent studies on the relationship between individuals and places highlight the importance of this place attachment, but despite its abundant use, it remains in a stage of theoretical underdevelopment. Furthermore, the lack of research on the attachment to Portuguese Natural Parks endowed this research with an exploratory character and led to the need to a new definition of the concept of place attachment and to the construction of a broader analytical model. The attribution and maintenance of meanings and values to the places, implies not only the relationship of people with the physical elements of the territory but also the interactions of individuals with each other, their sharing of history and culture, and other aspects that can either strengthen or weaken people's attachments to places. We propose in this article a new analytical model that includes, at the same time, the factors that participate in the attribution of meanings and values to places, and also those that participate in the place attachment process whether in a contributory way or in a disruptive way. The empirical study presented in this article adopted a qualitative interpretative methodology through the use of semi-structured in-depth interviews. Thus, 26 Fuzeta residents engaged in leisure or professional activities in the Ria Formosa lagoon were interviewed. The interviewees were workers from several professional activities that use the lagoon - such as fishermen and shellfish catchers, restaurant and hospitality workers, as well as those engaged in leisure activities such as sunbathing, recreational fishing, the catching of shellfish and crustaceans, hiking, boating, windsurfing and camping. The results indicate that the inhabitants of Fuzeta have a very strong and multidimensional attachment to the Ria Formosa that is related to the meanings, emotions, feelings they attribute to it and mainly to the perception of its irreplaceability.

The study and conservation of cetaceans benefit from systematic studies and non-systematic records about sightings and strandings. However, iEcology (internet ecology) was critical for numerous ecological studies and should be in the toolkit of cetacean ecologists. We hypothesize that iEcology is irreplaceable to obtain diversity data about cetaceans in poorly monitored regions that coincide with touristic destinations, where whale-watching companies go out to sea regularly and post their sightings on social media. Our study assessed the advantages and disadvantages of iEcology while obtaining the first broadscale and long-term assessment about cetaceans’ diversity off the Algarve, a European tourist destination with numerous whale-watching companies. We retrieved 1,299 time-referenced records about 15 species posted on Facebook and Instagram between 2011 and 2020. Data collected from Biodiversity4All, an online citizen science biodiversity database, disclosed georeferenced records about nine species made between 2008 and 2020, however, the number of records was 15.8 times lower than social media posts. We obtained information about 16 species, two of which were never mentioned in the scientific literature [Balaenoptera musculus, Balaenoptera edeni (record made in 2021)] and five species were only mentioned in the gray literature. Previous assessments were restricted in time, published in the gray literature, and only reported six and 11 species. So, social media was essential to obtain the first broadscale and long-term assessment of cetaceans’ diversity off the Algarve. The main advantages of iEcology were the possibility to obtain data collected over one decade and its low cost. The main disadvantages are the impossibility to obtain georeferenced records from social media, the difficulty to estimate the number of individuals in large groups, and the presence of rare species can be inflated if multiple whale-watching companies report the same individual(s) while they migrate along the coast. Nonetheless, these disadvantages can be mitigated. Overall, we endorse the use of iEcology to increase the ecological knowledge about cetaceans which might be the only tool to study them in numerous regions across the world. The contributions of whale-watching companies are invaluable, so we recommend the implementation of a standardized cetacean observation log as a relevant source of data for conservation.

A 3D virtual geological route on Digital Earth of the geological-geomorphological and paleontological heritage in the Algarve (Portugal) is presented, assessing the geological heritage of nine representative geosites. Eighteen quantitative parameters are used, weighing the scientific, didactic and cultural tourist interest of each site. A virtual route has been created in Google Earth, with overlaid georeferenced cartographies, as a field guide for students to participate and improve their learning. This free application allows loading thematic georeferenced information that has previously been evaluated by means of a series of parameters for identifying the importance and interest of a geosite (scientific, educational and/or tourist). The virtual route allows travelling from one geosite to another, interacting in real time from portable devices (e.g., smartphone and tablets), and thus making possible the ability to observe the relief and spatial geological distribution with representative images, as well as to access files with the description and analysis of each geosite. By using a field guide, each geosite is complemented with activities for carrying out and evaluating what has been learned; these resources allow a teaching-learning process where the student is an active part of the development and creation of content using new technologies that provide more entertaining and educational learning, teamwork and interaction with social networks. This itinerary allows the creation of attitudes and skills that involve geoconservation as an element for sustainable development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The coast, as the interface between land and sea, is a highly dynamic area, endangered by erosion and flooding, particularly at times of sea-level rise. At the present context of climate change, the use of scientific knowledge to understand coastal dynamics and coastal evolution assessment through time is essential to find a suitable management response for a successful adaptive coastal governance. It is proposed that the obtained high-resolution and long-term coastline change dataset is of crucial importance to improve the knowledge on mesoscale evolution of the Portuguese south-eastern coast, from Ancão to Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA), a 55 km long coastal stretch. The evolutionary trend, from 1950 to 2015, points to a general seaward progradation at the western (Barreta island) and eastern (Cacela peninsula – VRSA) sectors, and mostly an erosional trend at the central barrier island system (Culatra, Tavira and Cabanas islands). Moreover, a considerable average landward displacement of approximately 130 m is observed at Cabanas island. Regarding overall coastline movement, seaward displacement prevails, with a prograding coastline occupying approximately 54% of the studied sector even though this is mostly associated with human intervention on the coast. The exception is the Manta Rota - Monte Gordo sector where accumulation is likely related to natural processes. Considering the significant influence man-made interventions have had on the coastline evolution, it is believed that the natural evolutionary pattern would point to an overall erosional trend in the islands sector and a progradational trend from Manta Rota to VRSA beach. Study region: Iberia, Algarve basin, South Portugal. Study focus: This study evaluates the performance of several GRACE products in Iberia using the closure of the water budget. Then, it focusses on the Algarve region and explores the potential of GRACE as a tool of quantitative groundwater monitoring capable of bridging gaps in the existing ground-based network. Monthly data from GRACE, ancillary datasets from E-OBS, GLEAM, GRUN and ERA5, and groundwater level measurements from 12 karst-porous aquifers in the Algarve basin (5000 km2) are analyzed from 2004 to 2014. New Hydrological Insights for the Region: When considering the closure of the water budget at the Iberian scale, GRACE Mascon solutions perform remarkably well and better than the products based on spherical harmonics. When considering only the Algarve region, the results are similar to the ones obtained for Iberia, but the GRACE solution that performs the best is the average of the CSR and JPL Mascon products. In spite of the Algarve’s extremely small area when compared to the GRACE footprint, the satellite is capable of capturing the regionally averaged seasonal and de- seasonalized variations in observed groundwater storage (correlation between GRACE-derived and regionally averaged ground-based measurements is 0.82). For the first time ever at the regional Algarve scale, bounds are placed on the aquifer’s storage properties which vary from 3.65 × 10−3 to 4.92 × 10−2.

Second home tourism obtained in recent years a relevant attention in Portugal and was identified by the national tourism plan as one of the strategic products for the country. In the Algarve its weight is relevant for the tourism dynamics. The study presents a qualitative analysis to identify the perspectives and tensions between different actors in this Portuguese region. A network analysis offers an interesting output of the cooperation dynamics among these actors. The results are helpful to understand second home tourism trajectories and present useful information for future strategies and plans for regional development. Effective governance in second home tourism may offer an opportunity for increasing the destination’s attractiveness, both for tourists and investors.

The new routes and services provided by low cost carriers enable the emergence of new tourist destinations in Europe and the development of new market segments that value the cheap and easy air accessibilities. One of the best examples is second home tourism (normally associated with residential tourism) that grew in recent years, mainly in tourism destinations in the south of Europe and Mediterranean. One of them is the Algarve that receive nowadays new second home owners coming from several countries, mainly because of the region’ great weather conditions, security and air accessibilities. France is one of the new second home market in Algarve, mainly because of the new Non-Habitual Residents (NHR) regime, that provides to new residents a very attractive tax benefits for their 10 years living in Portugal, as well as the new routes provided by low cost carriers since 2016 to eleven airports of France.

In this paper we deal with some mosaics found in two seaside settlements in the Algarve (Portugal), Boca do Rio (Vila do Bispo, Faro) and Abicada (Mexilhoreira Grande, Portimão). Mosaics from Boca do Rio were found in 1870 by Sebastião Philippes Martins Estácio da Veiga, and just one of them is preserved today, though we know some others through two detailed drawings and a plan made by Amélia Claranges Lucotte. The villa of Abicada has been known since 1917 and its sophisticated pars urbana was excavated between 1937–38 by José Formosinho. The mosaics of both archaeological sites were studied in 1987 by Prof. José Maria Blázquez who offered a first stylistical approach to some of the most outstanding floors. The progress of research produced in current years in the fields of archaeological research, Roman architecture and mosaics of the Algarve enable us to address these mosaics again, to study them from a broader perspective. We analyse their stylistic and compositional characteristics, paying special attention to the similarities with mosaics in other rural settlements in the area, like the best-known examples of Milreu and Cerro da Vila. They all share some stylistic and technical characteristics that enable us to place them in a common chronological and productive horizon, next to the mosaic production of other Roman sites of the Algarve. Thus, close parallels of geometrical and ornamental style in neighbour mosaics is useful both for suggesting a date to these non-stratigraphically dated mosaics and for defining the features of the widespread mosaic production in the Algarve.

The extensive archaeological work carried out in Monte Molião since 2006 has shown a long diachrony of the site between the 4th century BC and the end of the 2nd century. The main building development that took place at the Flavian and Antonine times, concealed widely the previous constructions, namely the Julio-Claudian. Nevertheless, some archaeological data, such as italic terra sigillata, prove the permanence of human communities in Monte Molião that, since the Iron Age, lived there. The integrated study of this ceramic category, with the classification of ceramic fragments and respective shapes, it was taken into consideration the context of their collection, which enabled a better understanding of the consumption rhythms of the tableware in the beginning of the imperial phase, but also, to admit that the construction of some buildings may fall behind, at least, to the first half of the 1st century. The forms of the ceramic set correspond mainly to the Haltern Service I, despite the Service II being also present, which is not frequent in Algarve or in the rest of Portuguese territory, with the exception of Alcácer do Sal and somewhat Santarém as well.

Traditional accounting systems have been criticized for focusing on product, service or department profitability, and not on customer profitability, thus failing to provide effective information to marketing-related decisions. Results are reported by operating departments, whilst marketing activities focus on customer market segments. Recognizing the growing emphasis on customer value creation, and to overcome the mismatch between the provision and use of information in hotels, CPA techniques have been suggested. Notwithstanding their benefits, namely a strategic focus, hotels still apply traditional techniques. A structured questionnaire collected through personal interviews showed that CPA is far from widespread in hotel management; instead, hotels accumulate costs in profit centers and in cost centers. None of the surveyed hotels had adopted activity based costing, despite this technique being viewed as the most appropriate to calculate individual customer profitability.
