6 pags., 5 figs., Low-lying states of Cd98 have been populated by the two-nucleon removal reaction (In100,Cd98+γ) and studied using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. Two new γ transitions were identified and assigned as decays from a previously unknown state. This state is suggested to be based on a π1g9/2-12p1/2-1 configuration with Jπ=5-. The present observation extends the systematics of the excitation energies of the first 5- state in N=50 isotones toward Sn100. The determined energy of the 5- state in Cd98 continues a smooth trend along the N=50 isotones. The systematics are compared with shell-model calculations in different model spaces. Good agreement is achieved when considering a model space consisting of the π(1f5/2, 2p3/2, 2p1/2, 1g9/2) orbitals. The calculations with a smaller model space omitting the orbitals below the Z=38 subshell could not reproduce the experimental energy difference between the ground and first 5- states in N=50 isotones, because proton excitations across Z=38 subshell yield a large amount of correlation energy that lowers the ground states., The authors thank the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator staff for providing a stable and high-intensity 124Xe beam and the BigRIPS team for the smooth operation of the secondary beam. 20 pags., 9 figs., 5 tabs., The β decay of Zr101,102 and Tc109 was studied using the technique of total absorption spectroscopy. The experiment was performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory using the Summing NaI(Tl) (SuN) detector in the first-ever application of total absorption spectroscopy with a fast beam produced via projectile fragmentation. The β-decay feeding intensity and Gamow-Teller transition strength distributions were extracted for these three decays. The extracted distributions were compared to three different quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) models based on different mean-field potentials. A comparison with calculations from one of the QRPA models was performed to learn about the ground-state shape of the parent nucleus. For Zr101 and Zr102, calculations assuming a pure shape configuration (oblate or prolate) were not able to reproduce the extracted distributions. These results may indicate that some type of mixture between oblate and prolate shapes is necessary to reproduce the extracted distributions. For Tc109, a comparison of the extracted distributions with QRPA calculations suggests a dominant oblate configuration. The other two QRPA models are commonly used to provide β-decay properties in r-process network calculations. 6 pags., 3 figs., 2 tabs., We studied the proton-rich T-z = -1 nucleus Kr-70 through inelastic scattering at intermediate energies in order to extract the reduced transition probability, B(E2; 0+ -> 2+). Comparison with the other members of the A = 70 isospin triplet, Br-70 and Se-70, studied in the same experiment, shows a 3 sigma deviation from the expected linearity of the electromagnetic matrix elements as a function of T-z. At present, no established nuclear structure theory can describe this observed deviation quantitatively. This is the first violation of isospin symmetry at this level observed in the transition matrix elements. A heuristic approach may explain the anomaly by a shape change between the mirror nuclei Kr-70 and Se-70 contrary to the model predictions., We would like to thank the RIKEN accelerator and BigRIPS teams for providing the high intensity beams. Lifetimes of negative-parity states have been determined in the neutron deficient semi-magic (N = 50) nucleus Rh. The fusion-evaporation reaction Ni(Ca, 3 p) was used to populate high-spin states in Rh at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL) accelerator facility. The results were obtained using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM) based on the Doppler broadened line shapes produced during the slowing down process of the residual nuclei in a thick 6mg/cm2 metallic target. B(M1) and B(E2) reduced transition strengths are compared with predictions from large-scale shell-model calculations.

The joint evaluated fission and fusion nuclear data library 3.3 is described. New evaluations for neutron-induced interactions with the major actinides U , U and Pu , on Am and Na , Ni , Cr, Cu, Zr, Cd, Hf, W, Au, Pb and Bi are presented. It includes new fission yields, prompt fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons per fission. In addition, new data for radioactive decay, thermal neutron scattering, gamma-ray emission, neutron activation, delayed neutrons and displacement damage are presented. JEFF-3.3 was complemented by files from the TENDL project. The libraries for photon, proton, deuteron, triton, helion and alpha-particle induced reactions are from TENDL-2017. The demands for uncertainty quantification in modeling led to many new covariance data for the evaluations. A comparison between results from model calculations using the JEFF-3.3 library and those from benchmark experiments for criticality, delayed neutron yields, shielding and decay heat, reveals that JEFF-3.3 performes very well for a wide range of nuclear technology applications, in particular nuclear energy. β-delayed one-neutron and two-neutron branching ratios (P1n and P2n) have been measured in the decay of A=84 to 87 Ga isotopes at the Radioactive-Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) at the RIKEN Nishina Center using a high-efficiency array of He3 neutron counters (BRIKEN). Two-neutron emission was observed in the decay of Ga84,85,87 for the first time and the branching ratios were measured to be P2n=1.6(2)%,1.3(2)%, and 10.2(28)stat(5)sys%, respectively. One-neutron branching ratio of Ga87(P1n=81(9)stat(8)sys%) and half-life of 29(4) ms were measured for the first time. The branching ratios of Ga86 were also measured to be P1n=74(2)stat(8)sys% and 16.2(9)stat(6)sys% with better precision than a previous study. The observation that P1n>P2n for both Ga86,87 was unexpected and is interpreted as a signature of dominating one-neutron emission from the two-neutron unbound excited states in Ge86,87. In order to interpret the experimental results, shell-model and Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations of delayed particle and γ-ray emission probabilities were performed. This model framework reproduces the experimental results. The shell model alone predicts P2n significantly larger than P1n for the Ga87 decay, and it is necessary to invoke a statistical description to successfully explain the observation that P1n>P2n. Our new results demonstrate the relevance and importance of a statistical description of neutron emission for the prediction of the decay properties of multineutron emitters and that it must be included in the r-process modeling.

4 pags., 1 fig. -- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, The kinematics of two-neutron emission following the β-decay of Li was investigated for the first time by detecting the two neutrons in coincidence and by measuring their angle and energy. An array of liquid-scintillator neutron detectors was used to reject cosmic-ray and γ-ray backgrounds by pulse-shape discrimination. Cross-talk events in which two detectors are fired by a single neutron were rejected using a filter tested on the β-1n emitter Li. A large cross-talk rejection rate is obtained (> 95%) over most of the energy range of interest. Application to Li data leads to a significant number of events interpreted as β-2n decay. A discrete neutron line at ≈ 2 MeV indicates sequential two-neutron emission, possibly from the unbound state at 10.6 MeV excitation energy in Be.

The neutron-rich isotopes Tl211,213, beyond the N=126 shell closure, have been studied for the first time in isomer γ-ray decay, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam at the Fragment Separator-Rare Isotopes Investigation at GSI setup. The observed isomeric states in Tl211,213 show a deviation from the seniority-like scheme of Tl209. The possible interpretation of the data is discussed on the basis of energy-level systematics and shell-model calculations.

Using the high-resolution O18(He3,t)F18 reaction at 0 and at 140 MeV/nucleon, Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions were studied. A high energy resolution of 31 keV was achieved by applying dispersion matching techniques. The main part of the observed GT transition strength is concentrated in the transition to the F18 ground state (g.s.). The absolute values of the reduced GT transition strengths, B(GT), were derived up to Ex=12 MeV assuming proportionality between the B(GT) values and the reaction cross sections at 0. The B(GT) value obtained from the β decay of F18 (g.s.) →O18 (g.s.) was used to determine the proportionality constant. A total B(GT) of 4.06(5) was found and 76(1)% of the strength is concentrated to the ground state of F18. The obtained B(GT) values were compared with those from the O18(p,n)F18 reaction and the mirror symmetric β+ decay of Ne18→F18. The candidates for 1+ states with isospin T=1 were identified by comparison with the O18(p,p′) data. The results of shell-model and quasiparticle-random-phase approximation calculations suggest constructive contributions of various configurations to the F18 ground state, suggesting that this state is the low-energy super GT state.

6 pags., 3 figs., Even mass neutron-rich niobium isotopes are among the principal contributors to the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum. They are also among the most challenging to measure due to the refractory nature of niobium, and because they exhibit isomeric states lying very close in energy. The β-intensity distributions of Nb100gs,100m and Nb102gs,102m β decays have been determined using the total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy technique. The measurements were performed at the upgraded Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility at the University of Jyväskylä. Here, the double Penning trap system JYFLTRAP was employed to disentangle the β decay of the isomeric states. The new data obtained in this challenging measurement have a large impact in antineutrino summation calculations. β-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclides in the A=100-110 mass region have been measured using an implantation station installed inside of the Summing NaI(Tl) (SuN) detector at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. Accurate half-lives for these nuclides are important for nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure, and nuclear technology. The half-lives from the present work are compared with previous measurements, showing overall good agreement.

Guadilla et al. -- 10 pags., 10 figs., 2 tabs., The β decay of Tc100 has been studied by using the total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy technique at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility in Jyväskylä. In this work the new Decay Total Absorption γ-ray Spectrometer in coincidence with a cylindrical plastic β detector has been employed. The β intensity to the ground state obtained from the analysis is in good agreement with previous high-resolution measurements. However, differences in the feeding to the first-excited state as well as weak feeding to a new level at high excitation energy have been deduced from this experiment. Theoretical calculations performed in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation framework are also reported. S. Rice et al. -- 10 pags., 12 figs., 4 tabs., The beta decays of Br86 and Rb91 have been studied using the total absorption spectroscopy technique. The radioactive nuclei were produced at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility in Jyväskylä and further purified using the JYFLTRAP. Br86 and Rb91 are considered to be major contributors to the decay heat in reactors. In addition, Rb91 was used as a normalization point in direct measurements of mean gamma energies released in the beta decay of fission products by Rudstam et al. assuming that this decay was well known from high-resolution measurements. Our results show that both decays were suffering from the Pandemonium effect and that the results of Rudstam et al. should be renormalized. These γ rays establish several hitherto unknown excited states in Rn213. Also, five new α-decay branches from the Fr213 ground state have been discovered. Shell model calculations have been performed to understand the newly observed states in Rn213.
